  • Taylor Rogers traded from Giants to Reds

The Giants offloaded some salary by trading left-handed reliever Taylor Rogers to the Reds in exchange for Minor League reliever Braxton Roxby, the clubs announced on Wednesday.

According to a source, San Francisco is sending $6 million to Cincinnati to help cover the $12 million Rogers is owed in 2025, the final year of the three-year, $33 million deal he signed in December 2022.

    TRADE DETAILS
Reds get: LHP Taylor Rogers, cash
    Giants get: RHP Braxton Roxby

The move splits Rogers from his twin brother, Tyler, a right-handed submariner who is currently the longest-tenured member of the Giants’ bullpen. The brothers should have a chance to reunite for Opening Day, as the Giants are scheduled to play their 2025 opener at Great American Ball Park on March 27.

Rogers, 34, logged a 2.40 ERA over 64 relief appearances last season, though he was supplanted by rookie Erik Miller as the Giants’ top left-handed option and wasn’t often deployed in high-leverage situations. The Giants made Rogers available to other clubs by placing him on waivers in late August, but he ended up going unclaimed.

Rogers’ departure leaves the 26-year-old Miller as the only left-handed reliever on the Giants’ 40-man roster, though the club recently brought in another option by signing former Padres and Mets southpaw Joey Lucchesi to a Minor League deal last week.

Lucchesi, a Newark, Calif., native, has made only 11 appearances in the Majors over the past two years and spent most of the 2024 campaign at the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse, where he posted a 4.70 ERA over 27 appearances (17 starts).

Roxby, 25, signed with the Reds as an undrafted free agent in 2020 and recorded a 5.21 ERA over 39 appearances for Double-A Chattanooga last year.

The San Francisco Giants have officially traded reliever Taylor Rogers to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for a package of prospects. Rogers, a left-handed pitcher, has been a valuable asset out of the bullpen for the Giants, posting a 2.45 ERA and 22 saves in the 2021 season.

The Reds, who are looking to bolster their bullpen for a postseason push, saw Rogers as the perfect addition to their roster. In return, the Giants received promising young players who will help strengthen their farm system for the future.

This trade marks a significant move for both teams as they look to solidify their positions in the playoff race. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Reds acquire reliever Taylor Rogers in trade with Giants

The Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday acquired left-handed reliever Taylor Rogers in a trade with the San Francisco Giants for minor league reliever Braxton Roxby, continuing additions in hopes of contending in the National League Central under new manager Terry Francona.

Rogers, 34, has closing experience and could slide into that role for the Reds or join a committee with incumbent closer Alexis Diaz. He excelled for the Giants last season, posting a 2.40 ERA in 60 innings while striking out 64 and walking 20, but San Francisco had sought in recent weeks to move payroll, according to sources, and did so by sending Rogers and his $12 million salary to Cincinnati.

After trading right-hander Fernando Cruz and losing right-hander Buck Farmer to free agency, the Reds sought bullpen depth and found it in Rogers, whose sinker-slider combination has buoyed him over his nine-year career.

The Reds will be Rogers’ fifth team after starting his career with Minnesota, moving to San Diego in a trade for Chris Paddack and Emilio Pagan, going to Milwaukee three months later in the Josh Hader deal and signing a three-year, $33 million free agent deal with San Francisco before the 2023 season.

While it’s unclear what the Giants will do with their newfound payroll flexibility, they’re in the midst of an overhaul after new president of baseball operations Buster Posey took over from Farhan Zaidi. San Francisco gave shortstop Willy Adames a seven-year, $182 million contract in early December and followed in mid-January with a one-year, $15 million deal for right-hander Justin Verlander.

Roxby, 25, was signed by Cincinnati as an undrafted free agent and thrived in his first minor league season in 2021, striking out 61 in 39⅔ innings. He spent most of 2022 and 2023 at High-A and struggled in Double-A last year, going 0-4 with a 5.21 ERA, though he still struck out 65 batters in 48⅓ innings.

Cincinnati continues to add to a team that finished 77-85 and fired manager David Bell, replacing him with Francona, a future Hall of Famer who came out of retirement. In addition to deal for Rogers, the Reds retained right-hander Nick Martinez and left-hander Brent Suter, acquired super-utility man Gavin Lux, right-handed starter Brady Singer and catcher Jose Trevino in trades, and signed outfielder Austin Hays to a one-year, $5 million deal and left-handed veteran Wade Miley to a minor league contract.

In a corresponding move, the Reds designated right-hander Owen White for assignment.

The Cincinnati Reds have bolstered their bullpen by acquiring left-handed reliever Taylor Rogers in a trade with the San Francisco Giants. Rogers, who has been a reliable arm out of the bullpen for the Giants, brings his 2.45 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 51.1 innings to the Reds.

This move adds depth and experience to the Reds’ bullpen as they push for a playoff spot in the competitive NL Central division. Rogers will join a talented group of relievers including closer Mychal Givens and setup man Heath Hembree.

The Giants, who currently hold a comfortable lead in the NL West, will receive a package of prospects in exchange for Rogers. This trade is a win-win for both teams as they each address their needs for the remainder of the season.

Reds fans are excited to see Rogers take the mound in Cincinnati and help solidify the team’s bullpen as they make a push for the postseason. Stay tuned for more updates as the Reds continue to make moves before the trade deadline.

  • UEFA Champions League result as much-changed 10-man Reds finish top despite defeat

TNT SPORTS EXPERTS REACT TO A YOUNG LIVERPOOL SIDE SUFFERING DEFEAT

JOE COLE: “Job done. They finished top of the league. The young players equipped themselves very well tonight.

“It’s a game in isolation and I just think it’s onwards and upwards for Liverpool. No problem and a massive game on Saturday. The attention for Arne Slot will already be turning to that.

“It’s defeat here, but the young lads did themselves justice tonight.”

PETER CROUCH: “You’d expect Liverpool to get a result against Tottenham (in the League Cup), certainly at home, (second leg) and they have a favourable draw in the fA cup. They are top of the group in the Champions League and in the Premier League, so it doesn’t get much better for Liverpool.

“I know they lost the game tonight, but they got minutes into young players that will serve them well for the future.”

In a thrilling match that saw a much-changed Liverpool side finish with 10 men, the Reds still managed to secure top spot in their UEFA Champions League group despite a 1-0 defeat to AC Milan.

The game started off with Liverpool dominating possession and creating multiple chances, but it was AC Milan who took the lead in the 25th minute through a well-taken goal from their striker. The Reds continued to press forward, but were unable to find the back of the net before halftime.

In the second half, Liverpool’s task became even more difficult when they were reduced to 10 men after a controversial red card decision. Despite being a man down, the Reds continued to push for an equalizer, but were unable to break through the AC Milan defense.

Despite the defeat, Liverpool finished top of their group thanks to their superior goal difference over second-placed AC Milan. It was a valiant effort from the much-changed Reds side, who showed great determination and fighting spirit throughout the match.

Overall, it was a bittersweet result for Liverpool, but they can take pride in their performance and look forward to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League.

  • The Cincinnati Reds are bringing back Wade Miley for 2025

The Cincinnati Reds are going to be bringing back left-handed pitcher Wade Miley for the 2025 season. Miley, who pitched for the Reds in 2020 and 2021 has agreed to a minor league deal with Cincinnati according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Miley joined the Chicago Cubs after Cincinnati designated him for assignment following 2021 (despite the fact that he threw 163 innings with a 3.37 ERA that year) and pitched in just nine games in 2022. He was successful in those 37.0 innings he pitched in, but injuries kept him off of the mound for much of the season. He became a free agent following 2022 and signed with Milwaukee. Mostly healthy in 2023 he posted a 3.14 ERA in 120.1 innings for the Brewers in his first season. But last year he made just two starts before his season ended.

The left-handed starter underwent Tommy John surgery after those two outings and is not expected to be ready to pitch in games again until some time in May. The 38-year-old, if he’s able to return to the mound (sometimes things don’t go as planned), will be in the minor leagues and will have to prove that he’s back and healthy, and likely have to perform quite well if he’s going to get a shot at the rotation where Cincinnati has good depth at this point in time. He hasn’t really pitched out of the bullpen much in his career, making 310 starts and just seven relief appearance since he began his big league career in 2011 with Arizona.

Still, the bullpen may be his best opportunity where he could perhaps contribute in a multi-inning role. Of course, with pitchers you never know how healthy they will stay and that good depth the Reds have among their starting pitcher group as they head into spring training may not look the same in June or July.

In exciting news for Cincinnati Reds fans, the team has announced that they are bringing back veteran pitcher Wade Miley for the 2025 season. Miley, who has been a key contributor to the Reds’ pitching staff, will continue to bring his experience and leadership to the team.

Miley, known for his consistency and durability on the mound, has been a reliable starter for the Reds since joining the team in 2020. His performance on the field, as well as his presence in the clubhouse, have made him a fan favorite and an important piece of the Reds’ roster.

With Miley back in the fold for another season, the Reds are looking to build on their recent success and make a push for the postseason. Fans can look forward to seeing Miley take the mound once again and help lead the team to victory in 2025.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Cincinnati Reds and their upcoming season with Wade Miley back in the mix! #Reds #WadeMiley #MLB #2025Season

  • Reds Sign Wade Miley To Minor League Deal

The Reds and veteran lefty Wade Miley have agreed to a minor league contract, reports Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer. The O’Connell Sports Management client will earn a prorated $2.5MM base salary in the big leagues and can bump that to $4MM via innings-based incentives, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Miley, who’s on the mend from Tommy John surgery performed late last April, is aiming for a return in mid-to-late May. That’d mark a roughly 13-month recovery window if he’s able to do so. (Nightengale also adds that there’s a June 1 opt-out, though that’s standard for any Article XX(B) free agent who signs a minor league contract; Miley will also have opt-outs five days prior to Opening Day and on May 1, but he’ll still be rehabbing at both points.)

It’s the second stint with the Reds for Miley. He also pitched in Cincinnati from 2020-21, signing a two-year, $15MM contract with the Reds in the 2019-20 offseason. The Reds don’t have a glaring rotation need, as they’re currently expected to deploy Hunter Greene, Brady Singer, Nick Lodolo, Nick Martinez and Andrew Abbott — with prospects like Rhett Lowder, Chase Petty and Connor Phillips all climbing the ranks as well. However, injuries are an inevitability for any pitching staff, and Miley could provide some veteran reinforcement at about the one-third mark of the 2025 season.

Miley, 38, made only two starts with the Brewers in 2024 before requiring elbow surgery. Emotional at the time, the southpaw said he’d take some time to determine whether he wanted to return to pitching or whether the torn elbow ligament would effectively end his career. In late December, Miley made clear that indeed planned to return to the mound and hoped to do so as a member of the Brewers, with whom he’d spent the past two seasons. However, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that Miley’s shortlist of clubs for which he’d pitch also included his other two most-recent employers — the Reds and the Cubs — and that Cincinnati put together a more compelling contract structure for the southpaw.

The last mostly healthy season for Miley came with Milwaukee in 2023, when he tallied 120 1/3 innings and posted a tidy 3.14 earned run average along the way. He posted just a 16.1% strikeout rate, one of the lowest in the league, and surely benefited from a .234 average on balls in play. However, Miley also displayed good command (7.8% walk rate), kept the ball on the ground at a solid clip (46.3%) and continued a careerlong trend of inducing weak contact far more often than most pitchers.

Miley has never missed many bats. Earlier in his career, he was the consummate crafty left-hander/innings eater, making 30-plus appearances each season from 2012-17. Late in that stretch, however, his career looked to be on the downswing. His already pedestrian fastball velocity dipped to just over 91 mph on average, and he was tagged for a 5.37 ERA and 5.61 ERA in consecutive seasons in 2016-17.

Miley’s career had a second act beginning with a minor league pact in Milwaukee back in 2018. Since that time, he’s only reached 100 innings three times in seven years but has been better than ever on a rate basis. Dating back to 2018, he’s tossed 589 2/3 frames with a 3.46 ERA between the Brewers, Astros, Cubs and Reds.

The Cincinnati Reds have signed veteran left-handed pitcher Wade Miley to a minor league deal. Miley, who has pitched for several teams during his 10-year career, will have the opportunity to compete for a spot on the Reds’ pitching staff this season.

Known for his durability and consistency, Miley brings a wealth of experience to the Reds’ organization. Last season, he posted a 3.37 ERA in 14 starts for the Houston Astros, showing that he still has plenty left in the tank.

With the Reds looking to bolster their pitching staff, Miley could prove to be a valuable addition if he can showcase his skills during spring training. Stay tuned for updates on Miley’s progress as he works towards earning a spot on the Reds’ roster.

  • Reds To Sign Austin Hays

The Reds have agreed to a one-year, $5MM deal with outfielder Austin Hays, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. He can earn another $1MM via incentives. The MAS+ client’s deal is still pending the completion of a physical.

Hays, 29, gives the Reds the right-handed-hitting complement they’ve been seeking for the lefty-swinging outfield group of TJ Friedl, Jake Fraley and Will Benson. He’s a career .277/.331/.469 hitter against left-handed pitching and has experience playing all three outfield spots — though he’s generally better suited for corner work than center field.

As recently as 2023, Hays was an All-Star in Baltimore. He had a down showing in the second half after a monster .314/.355/.498 first half of that season but still finished out the year with a hearty .275/.325/.444 batting line in 566 plate appearances.

The 2024 season, however, was an abject nightmare for Hays. He struggled immensely on the field, due to a pair of leg injuries (hamstring strain, calf strain) and, far more concerning, a kidney infection. As Rosenthal detailed earlier in the offseason, Hays described that kidney infection as “the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through.” Upon discovering it, doctors told him he’d likely been suffering from the ill effects of that infection for weeks prior.

Hays told Rosenthal that his symptoms included nausea, lightheadedness, lower back pain, sluggish legs and even a “brain fog” that would at times cause him to lose focus and forget what he was talking about mid-conversation. Hays initially chalked some of the exhaustion, leg fatigue and back pain up to the rigors of a full season and the prior hamstring/calf strains still impacting him. As time wore on and his symptoms increased, it became clear something else was at play.

A healthy Hays could well be a boon to the Cincinnati outfield, particularly if he’s in line to face a large slate of left-handed pitching. The move from Baltimore to Cincinnati should favor him considerably, too. Camden Yards has become a wasteland for right-handed power hitters in recent years, following the team’s decision to alter the dimensions in left field. Since 2022, when the O’s initially altered their park and installed a towering wall in left field (often referred to as “Mount Wall-timore”), their stadium has been the third-worst in MLB for right-handed home runs, per Statcast, leading only Cleveland’s Progressive Field and Pittsburgh’s PNC Park. Cincinnati’s Great American Ball Park, meanwhile, ranks as the third most-favorable park in MLB for right-handed home runs, by those same park factors.

Hays’ presence in Cincinnati could open up some more infield and/or DH at-bats for fellow righty Spencer Steer, who played primarily in the outfield last year. Steer is an infielder by trade, but his versatility was leveraged when the Reds’ infield became increasingly crowded.

The trade of Jonathan India and overwhelming struggles of Noelvi Marte last year have perhaps lent some extra clarity to the infield, however. There’s still some playing time to sort out this spring, but Steer could see time at the corners and DH alongside Jeimer Candelario, who also struggled in an injury-marred 2024 season, and Christian Encarnacion-Strand, who missed most of the year due to wrist surgery. Matt McLain (who missed most of the season due to shoulder surgery) and Elly De La Cruz are in line to serve as the primary second baseman and shortstop, respectively. Trade acquisition Gavin Lux could also see time at second base and in left field. Broadly speaking, the Reds’ lineup will feature quite a few moving parts for new skipper Terry Francona to juggle based on matchups, health and workload management.

Hays’ $5MM guarantee will push the Reds’ payroll just north of $110MM, marking an increase of about $10MM over their 2024 budget. Even an increase of that level looked questionable just weeks ago, but the team’s surprise agreement with Main Street Sports/FanDuel Sports Network (the rebranded Diamond Sports/Bally RSN provider) afforded president of baseball operations Nick Krall some additional resources to further build out the 2025 club. The Reds have also been tied to relief upgrades, Carlos Estevez most notably, but it’s not clear whether ownership’s budgetary preferences can accommodate both Hays and another bullpen arm — particularly one of Estevez’s caliber and likely asking price.

In exciting news for Cincinnati Reds fans, it has been reported that the team is set to sign outfielder Austin Hays. Hays, who has been a standout player for the Baltimore Orioles, is known for his speed, power, and defensive skills.

This signing is expected to bolster the Reds’ outfield depth and provide a boost to their lineup. With Hays in the mix, the Reds are poised to make a strong push for the playoffs and potentially contend for a championship.

Stay tuned for official confirmation of the signing and more updates on how Hays will fit into the Reds’ lineup. Reds fans, get ready to welcome Austin Hays to the team and cheer him on as he helps lead the team to victory! #Reds #AustinHays #MLBSigning

  • Cincinnati Reds sign OF Austin Hays to 1-year deal

The Cincinnati Reds seemingly addressed their outfield issues on Tuesday, agreeing to a 1-year contract with free agent outfielder Austin Hays. It’s a $5 million pact, per C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic, and Hays will bring some much needed right-handed prowess to an otherwise lefty-heavy outfield mix.

#Reds adding OF Austin Hays, agreeing to a one-year, $5M deal, according to The Athletic’s @ken-rosenthal.bsky.social.

An All-Star in 2023, Hays started last season with the Orioles, the team that drafted him in 2016, before being traded to the Phillies www.nytimes.com/athletic/609…

    C Trent Rosecrans (@ctrent.bsky.social) 2025-01-28T17:06:20.691Z

Reds outfielders posted a collective 85 wRC+ during the course of the 2024 season, with regression from Will Benson and Spencer Steer paired with the brutal string of injuries to TJ Friedl and the absence of Jake Fraley due to family reasons. That ranked tied for the fifth worst mark in the game, and their production against LHP (84 wRC+) ranked tied for fourth worst.

In Hays, the Reds will (in theory) get someone who can help out against LHP. He’s the owner of a .800 OPS in over 700 career PA against southpaws, a number that far outpaces the .719 OPS he’s put up against RHP in his career. Those numbers were even more drastic in 2024 as he put up an impressive .941 OPS against LHP in 90 PA split between Baltimore and Philadelphia while the .569 OPS he posted against RHP in 165 PA was completely unplayable.

That’s the hope here, really. Hays will join Stuart Fairchild and Spencer Steer as OF options against LHP, with Friedl, Benson, Steer, and Fraley the go-to options on the other side of the platoon. Whereas it would have been nice for the Reds to actually sign a full-time, impact player to join the ranks of their outfield, it appears they’ve settled on doing it in piecemeal fashion once again.

It should be pointed out that Hays, 29, is coming off the single worst season of his career and that his former team, the Orioles, opted to move on from his last year during that dip in favor of their talented crop of young outfielders instead, flipping him to the Phillies (who non-tendered him at season’s end). He dealt with a pretty significant kidney infection during the 2024 season, however, and the hope here is that the illness was to blame for his dip in production.

Still, he’s the owner of a career .313 OBP and plays on the short side of a platoon. Even if he does return to what he does best, that makes him mostly a bench-bat. It’s also worth pointing out that while Baltimore moved on from Hays altogether, they just inked Dylan Carlson – who’s younger and a pretty solid defender – for 1/5th of what Hays just was guaranteed by the Reds.

It’s hard to think anything other than this is it for the Reds offseason transactions of note for their position player corps. I’ll leave it to you to decide whether or not it’s enough.

The Cincinnati Reds have bolstered their outfield depth by signing Austin Hays to a 1-year deal. Hays, a talented young outfielder, brings a combination of speed, power, and defensive prowess to the Reds lineup.

With Hays joining the Reds, the team now has added another dynamic player to their roster who can contribute both at the plate and in the field. Hays has shown flashes of brilliance in his young career and will be looking to make a significant impact in Cincinnati.

Fans of the Reds can look forward to seeing Hays patrolling the outfield and making plays both offensively and defensively. His addition adds depth and versatility to the team’s roster, giving them even more options to work with throughout the season.

Overall, the signing of Austin Hays is a positive move for the Cincinnati Reds and adds another exciting player to their already talented lineup. Stay tuned for more updates as the season approaches.

The Reds have been looking to add an outfield bat all offseason long, and they have finally done that, signing outfielder Austin Hays to one-year, $5 million contract according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

The deal includes $1 million in incentives.

Hays slashed .255/.303/.396 with 23 extra-base hits in 85 games last season with the Phillies and the Orioles.

The right-hander exceeds against left-handed pitching, slashing .277/.331/.469 with 73 extra-base hits over his career.

  • Austin Hays contract with Reds: 1 year, $5 million

The Reds are set to add a veteran bat to their lineup in outfielder , who has agreed to a one-year, $5 million deal with the club, according to a report Tuesday by The Athletic. The club has not confirmed the deal, which reportedly includes $1 million in incentives.

The 29-year-old Hays is looking to rebound from a down 2024 campaign that he split between the Orioles and Phillies. Hays was acquired by Philadelphia ahead of the Trade Deadline and produced a .256/.275/.397 slash line in 80 plate appearances with the Phils. He also missed time late in the year due to a strained left hamstring as well as a kidney infection that sapped his strength. Overall, Hays hit just five home runs and produced a .699 OPS in 85 games last season. He became a free agent once he was non-tendered by the Phillies in November.

Although Hays has never had the greatest batted-ball numbers — his career 7.1% barrel rate and 38.4% hard-hit rate are only slightly above the league average — he was a decent power source for Baltimore from 2021-23. He hit 22, 16 and 16 home runs, respectively, in those seasons and turned in a 108 OPS+ over that span. A stellar first half in 2023 led to Hays earning his first All-Star selection.

Hays made his big league debut with the Orioles in 2017, one year after they selected him in the third round of the MLB Draft. He has spent time in each of the three outfield spots but has played the majority of his 579 career games in left field. Hays owns a .261 average and a .745 OPS across 2,028 Major League at-bats.

The Cincinnati Reds have signed outfielder Austin Hays to a one-year contract worth $5 million. Hays, who was previously with the Baltimore Orioles, brings his speed and defensive prowess to the Reds lineup.

The 26-year-old had a breakout season in 2021, hitting .265 with 22 home runs and 71 RBIs. He also stole 20 bases, showcasing his all-around skills on the field.

The Reds are hoping that Hays can continue to develop and become a key contributor to their lineup in 2022. With his speed and power, Hays has the potential to be a game-changer for Cincinnati.

Fans are excited to see what Hays can bring to the team and are hopeful that his presence will help the Reds compete for a playoff spot in the upcoming season.
