NFL refs favoring Chiefs is ‘ridiculous theory,’ Roger Goodell says
NEW ORLEANS – NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said at his annual Super Bowl-week news conference Monday that those who believe the Kansas City Chiefs receive preferential treatment from the officials are simply wrong.
“A lot of those theories happen in social media and they have a new life … I understand it, I think it reflects a lot of the fans’ passion,” Goodell said. “I think it’s also a reminder of how important officiating is.”
Goodell said he believes the individuals who call NFL games have the highest possible standards when it comes to integrity.
“That’s a ridiculous theory, for anyone who might take it seriously,” Goodell said. “But at the end of the day, it’s something we have to continue to work on: How do we make our officiating better at all times?”
The online hoopla reminded Goodell of last year’s narrative that the commissioner and others scripted the season from the league’s Park Avenue offices in Manhattan, New York.
NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.
“These officials are outstanding people – both men and women – and they go through a lot to become officials,” Goodell said. “It’s a tough job, a really hard job. … I’ve never seen a more dedicated group of people than NFL officials to getting it right, to doing the best job they possibly can, and I’m incredibly proud of them.”
Moderated by Curt Menefee, the FOX Sports host who offered a few table-setting talking points for Goodell, the session lasted about 45 minutes. Menefee asked about the existence of a universal sky judge and how the league can be more transparent.
“I think that’s something we continue to work on: communicate better, educate better,” Goodell said. “But also to use technology. … We want to use technology to supplement and support and assist the officials in getting it right.”
More plays may be available to “replay assist” – a quick decision from an official not on the field with access to more camera angles – after the league’s competition committee meets this offseason.
Whether or not that includes using tech to spot the football rather than the eyesight of human beings is a work in progress, Goodell said.
The league tested that technology in the preseason and Goodell said it is complicated by the shape of the football makes it more difficult. The NFL’s partners are working to advance that as quickly as possible, Goodell added, and the league is experimenting to determine whether it can be used in the flow of a game.
In a recent press conference, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell dismissed the idea that referees are favoring the Kansas City Chiefs in games. Goodell called the theory “ridiculous” and stated that the league takes the integrity of the game very seriously.Despite some controversial calls in recent Chiefs games, Goodell reiterated that the officials are trained to make fair and unbiased decisions on the field. He also emphasized that the league has strict protocols in place to ensure that all teams are treated equally.
While some fans and analysts have speculated about potential favoritism towards the Chiefs, Goodell’s comments suggest that the NFL is committed to maintaining a level playing field for all teams. It remains to be seen whether this will put an end to the speculation or if the controversy will continue to swirl around the Chiefs and their relationship with the referees.

Roger Goodell Calls Out ‘Ridiculous Theory’ About NFL Refs Favoring Chiefs | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Chris Graythen/Getty Images
As the Kansas City Chiefs gear up for their third straight Super Bowl appearance on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, they’re still facing detractors who believe they reached this point because they get favorable calls from officials.
“It reminds me of the script, that I write a script for the entire season… It’s a ridiculous theory, for anyone who might take it seriously,” Goodell said.
Goodell added that the league is constantly exploring ways to improve its officiating and may add ways to review plays, such as facemask penalties, going forward.
“I’m proud of what they do, but that doesn’t mean we’re not trying to get better,” Goodell told reporters.
When asked if there would be a penalty for players like Kansas City star quarterback Patrick Mahomes flopping to draw penalties, Goodell said he doesn’t view that as a significant issue, but he wouldn’t be surprised if the competition committee discussed it in the future.
The Chiefs’ 15-2 finish to the 2024 season wasn’t without its hardships. Many wins came down to the last minute, as Kansas City was fortunate to have some calls go their way. Of course, that didn’t help the perception that the back-to-back reigning Super Bowl champions were being gifted the opportunity to achieve the first three-peat in modern NFL history.
For example, in the AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills, star quarterback Josh Allen was ruled short on a crucial fourth-down play despite appearing to have picked up the first down. The play swung the momentum in the Chiefs’ favor, helping them secure a 32-29 win. Unsurprisingly, the controversial play was one of the biggest talking points after the game.
Fans will certainly be paying close attention to Sunday’s Big Game, as the Eagles will be the last to try their hands at knocking the Chiefs from their perch. Any questionable plays that work in Kansas City’s favor will certainly be under a microscope following the Super Bowl.
In a recent press conference, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed the growing speculation that NFL referees are favoring the Kansas City Chiefs in their games. Goodell called the theory “ridiculous” and stated that the league takes the integrity of the game very seriously.Goodell went on to explain that all NFL referees are held to the highest standards and are trained to make unbiased and fair calls during games. He emphasized that any accusations of favoritism towards a particular team are not only unfounded but also damaging to the reputation of the league.
The controversy surrounding the alleged favoritism towards the Chiefs has been fueled by several close calls and controversial decisions in their recent games. However, Goodell stressed that these incidents are simply part of the game and should not be taken as evidence of any wrongdoing on the part of the officials.
As the Chiefs continue their quest for another Super Bowl title, it is clear that the spotlight will remain on both the team and the referees. But according to Goodell, fans can rest assured that the NFL is committed to ensuring that every game is officiated fairly and without bias.

Troy Aikman Talks About Calling Out Refs, NFL During Texans-Chiefs Playoff Game
1. If you were to list the biggest story lines of the NFL’s postseason, Troy Aikman’s performance during the Texans-Chiefs divisional round playoff game on ABC/ESPN would make the cut.
Aikman received A LOT of attention for questioning the officiating and the league in regard to roughing-the-passer penalties, as well as calling out Patrick Mahomes for flopping.
“Oh, come on! I mean, he’s a runner. I could not disagree with that one more. He barely gets hit.” – Troy Aikman
“The two Houston players hit each other. That should not have been a foul.” – Russell Yurk
“They’ve gotta address it in the offseason…” – Aikman #NFL https://t.co/vXj2v7VTKg pic.twitter.com/QioQ5IQwhg
— Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) January 18, 2025
During an appearance on this week’s SI Media With Jimmy Traina, Aikman opened up about his calls during that game and the reaction to those officiating critiques.
“I know the officials have a tough job,” Aikman said. “The scrutiny that they’re under, as we’ve gotten more advanced with instant replay, those guys, it seems, have become more and more scrutinized.
“And the game has not become less controversial. It’s become more controversial. But then I just think we are at a point, and this is tipped a little bit because the league is partners with a number of these gambling services. So here you are promoting gambling, people are gambling more than they have ever before and those types of calls, there’s a lot at stake regardless, but especially when you’re considering there’s a lot of money that’s changing hands with these calls as well.
“So, I think that we owe it to the fans that we get it right, and I think that we are at a point and time where we can. We can get it more right. That was my position and just trying to lean on the NFL and say, ‘hey, we gotta fix this. We gotta address this in the offseason.’”
Given how strongly Aikman voiced his opinion and the praise he received for calling out the league, I asked the Hall of Fame quarterback if anyone from the NFL reached out to him.
“No,” said Aikman. “I never have. I’ve never heard from the league.”
Other topics discussed with Aikman on the podcast include how he found out his comments in the Texans-Chiefs game went viral, his famous 2019 tweet about Patrick Mahomes, advice he’d give Tom Brady on calling his first Super Bowl, the state of the Cowboys and his disdain for lateness.
You can listen to the full Aikman interview on SI Media With Jimmy Traina podcast below or on Apple and Spotify.

2. The power of the Chiefs as a ratings draw was on full display during championship Sunday last weekend.
Buffalo-Kansas City was obviously going to outdraw the Washington-Philadelphia game because of the matchup and time slot, but the difference in viewership numbers is pretty astounding.
Bills-Chiefs drew 57.7 million viewers for CBS in the late window while Eagles-Commanders pulled in 44.2 million viewers on Fox. That is a significant difference.
According to Sports Media Watch, Washington-Philly was the least-watched NFL conference title game since Bills-Chiefs on CBS in 2021 (42.8 million) and the least-watched NFC championship game since Packers-49ers in ’20.
3. If you’re undecided about which team you will bet on in Super Bowl LIX, here are a few stats for you to consider.
Patrick Mahomes’ career record in NFL playoffs as a favorite of under a FG or an underdog:
8-0 SU
8-0 ATSChiefs -1.5 vs. Eagles in #SBLIX

Something to note ahead of the Super Bowl.
Eagles DC Vic Fangio has faced Patrick Mahomes eight times (6 with Denver, twice with Miami). His teams are 0-8, and Mahomes has thrown 10 TDs and 2 INTs in those games.

4. Remember when referee Shawn Hochuli told the world that he could award the Eagles with a score if the Commanders kept intentionally jumping offsides during Sunday’s NFC championship game? Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels basically had the same reaction as me, you and everyone else watching the game.

5. I don’t think you need a lot of credibility to throw out hot takes on a hot take show, but Cam Newton saying he’d rather have an MVP award than Super Bowl title is a truly awful look.
Stephen A. Smith: “Cam, if you could give back that league MVP for a Super Bowl championship, would you do it?”
Cam Newton: “No” pic.twitter.com/b1wVO2i7Nh

6. As I told you at the top, Troy Aikman is this week’s guest on SI Media With Jimmy Traina. Regular listeners know that my buddy Sal Licata from WFAN joins me every week to close out the episode with our “Traina Thoughts” segment. Sal couldn’t do the show this week because he was having cataract surgery and based on the picture he shared afterward, we’ll have a lot to discuss next week.
— Sal Licata (@sal_licata) January 30, 2025
As for this week, WWE superstar, Seth Rollins, was kind enough to fill in for Sal on “Traina Thoughts.” Rollins, a big Chicago Bears fan, talked about the Super Bowl, his favorite NFL announcers, doing Radio Row, the Royal Rumble and more.
Rollins joins the podcast at the 1-hour mark.
7. RANDOM VIDEO OF THE DAY: It was 25 years ago today, in Episode 3 of Season 2, that we got one of Tony Soprano’s best NSFW explosions ever. The way that cereal bowl flew across the room was mesmerizing.

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current FOX Sports analyst Troy Aikman made headlines during the Houston Texans-Kansas City Chiefs playoff game this past weekend for speaking out against the officiating and the NFL’s rules.Aikman, who was calling the game alongside Joe Buck, didn’t hold back his criticism of the referees after a controversial call that went against the Texans. He expressed his frustration with the inconsistency and lack of accountability from the officials, stating that it was “ridiculous” and “embarrassing” for the league.
Aikman’s comments sparked a debate among fans and analysts, with some agreeing with his assessment and others defending the referees and the NFL’s policies. Regardless of where you stand on the issue, it’s clear that Aikman isn’t afraid to speak his mind and call out the powers that be when he feels they are in the wrong.
As the playoffs continue and the Super Bowl approaches, it will be interesting to see if Aikman continues to be vocal about his opinions on the officiating and the league as a whole. Love him or hate him, you can’t deny that Aikman’s passion for the game and his willingness to speak out make for some compelling television.

#Troy #Aikman #Talks #Calling #Refs #NFL #TexansChiefs #Playoff #GameSpurs’ Victor Wembanyama – Refs’ lack of calls ‘feels unfair’
SAN ANTONIO — Victor Wembanyama has had enough.
The San Antonio star charged after Ivica Zubac after the LA center shoved him to the court during the Clippers’ 128-116 victory over the Spurs on Wednesday night.
The frustration with what Wembanyama perceives as a lack of calls, and respect, from officials boiled over late in the third quarter — and during his postgame news conference.
“It’s not even about Zubac,” Wembanyama said. “It’s just frustration, no matter who it was.”
Asked if he believes he gets a fair whistle from officials, Wembanyama curtly said, “No.”
The shove from Zubac was just the latest overt physicality Wembanyama has had to deal with.
Zubac yelled at the officials earlier in the third quarter for not calling a foul on Harrison Barnes after the Spurs forward blocked his layup. The frustration boiled over when Wembanyama blocked Zubac’s attempted dunk with 4:49 left in the third quarter and no foul was called.
Zubac flailed his arms in frustration and was late defensively, watching as Barnes tossed in a 3-pointer that cut the Clippers lead to 85-78. Still, Zubac rushed into the paint as the shot was up and gave a hard hip check and elbow to Wembanyama’s back, sending him flying to the baseline.
Wembanyama gathered himself and charged at Zubac but was held back by the Spurs’ coaching staff and players, who had filed onto the court as Clippers coach Ty Lue called a timeout immediately after Barnes’ 3-pointer.
“I reacted a little,” Zubac said. “I thought I got fouled [on the previous play]. I was mad at the refs. So then I was late [on Barnes’ 3-point shot]. I saw it going up. I saw Wemby crashing, so I knew I had to box him out. I bumped him a little harder. I let emotions take over a little bit, but I apologized to him. That’s not the way I want to be on the court and compete.”
Zubac finished with 21 points and 22 rebounds. Wembanyama had 23 points and 12 rebounds.
Despite Zubac’s shove, no foul was called. Officials also did not call a technical foul on Wembanyama and, after a brief discussion, did not review the play.
The lack of a call angered Wembanyama and the Spurs.
“I thought there was a few plays that should have been taken care of a little bit earlier,” San Antonio acting head coach Mitch Johnson said. “You’ll get reactions like that. It’s probably surprising he hasn’t reacted like that earlier, to be honest. He gets a lot of contact, and at some point he’s going to have to continue to protect himself if the people controlling the game, supposedly, are not going to do that.”
It’s something Wembanyama said he has had to deal with as teams attempt to limit his ability to shoot 3-pointers and dribble like a guard by leaning against and pushing his 235-pound frame.
“So it’s a hard thing to fight, because it feels unfair sometimes,” Wembanyama said. “But of course, we talk about it with the staff and there is some stuff I have to do to help myself. First of all, being strong and not bailing out shots, but also there is some work to do. Talking to the refs, of course, explaining myself. But for me, it doesn’t feel like it’s something I should influence. I’m a basketball player, I’m here to play, and yeah, this is why it’s frustrating. It’s not my job to do politics.”
Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama – Refs’ lack of calls ‘feels unfair’Victor Wembanyama, the promising young center for the San Antonio Spurs, has been making waves in the NBA with his impressive skillset and potential. However, Wembanyama recently expressed frustration with the lack of calls he has been receiving from referees during games.
In a recent interview, Wembanyama stated, “It’s frustrating when you’re playing hard and giving your all on the court, but the refs don’t seem to be giving you the same level of respect. It just feels unfair at times.”
Wembanyama’s comments have sparked a debate among fans and analysts, with many questioning whether the rookie center is being unfairly targeted by referees. Some have pointed out that Wembanyama’s size and aggressive playing style may make him a target for fouls, while others believe that the lack of calls is simply a result of the fast-paced nature of the game.
Regardless of the reasons behind the lack of calls, it is clear that Wembanyama’s frustration is palpable. As he continues to develop and grow in the NBA, it will be interesting to see how he navigates the challenges of officiating and continues to make an impact on the court.

BATON ROUGE — LSU women’s basketball and Oklahoma quickly came to a shoving match in their top-15 matchup inside Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Thursday night.
With 4:10 remaining in the opening quarter, LSU junior forward Sa’Myah Smith and Oklahoma’s Beatrice Culliton got tangled up under the basket battling for a rebound.
After the play, Smith shoved Culliton and Sooner forward Liz Scott rushed over and pushed Smith back. LSU assistant coaches rushed off the bench to grab and get in front of Smith as her and Scott were quickly separated by their respective teammates.

The Sooners maintained the lead by the end of the first quarter, 23-20.

In a heated showdown between LSU and Oklahoma, tensions reached a boiling point as two players were ejected from the game after a physical altercation. The incident occurred in the second quarter when players from both teams got into a shoving match near the sideline. The referees wasted no time in stepping in and swiftly ejecting a player from each team for their role in the scuffle.
This altercation only added to the intensity of the game, as both teams fought tooth and nail for every yard. The ejections served as a reminder that emotions can run high in the heat of competition, but sportsmanship must always prevail.
As the game continued, both teams regrouped and refocused, determined to leave it all on the field and come out on top. The ejections may have been a setback, but they served as a wake-up call for the players to keep their emotions in check and stay focused on the task at hand.
In the end, LSU emerged victorious over Oklahoma, but the ejections will be a lasting reminder of the importance of maintaining composure and sportsmanship in the heat of battle.
