Steelers 4 Downs: Excelling in regular-season finales at home quite common

    1. See you in the fall …

If it’s the final regular-season game of the season and it’s at the venue now called Acrisure Stadium, history tells us it’s time for a Pittsburgh Steelers victory.

The Steelers have never lost a season finale at what once was called Heinz Field. They’re 11-0 in regular-season finales at home since they fell Jan. 2, 2000 (the 1999 season finale) to the Tennessee Titans … at Three Rivers Stadium.

The Steelers are 22-5 all-time when their regular-season finale has been at home. That includes 13 of their past 15 and 8-0 under Mike Tomlin.

Discounting for venue, the Steelers are an NFL-best 14-3 since 2007 (when Tomlin was hired) in regular-season finales (home or away). They have won 18 of their past 22 final games of the season overall.

If there is any caveat to the Steelers’ stellar record when closing out a season at home, it’s that they have far too often done so against the lowly Cleveland Browns. Seven of the 11 regular-season finales at Acrisure have been against the Browns. The only time the Steelers finished a season at Acrisure against a team with a winning record was in 2014. The Cincinnati Bengals that season finished 10-5-1. The Bengals, who wrap up the regular season Saturday night in Pittsburgh, are 8-8.

    2. … But not all of you

Saturday could be the final regular-season game — and final appearance at Acrisure Stadium — for a number of Steelers players. Of the 47 expected to be in uniform against the Bengals, 18 are on expiring contracts, with 15 of those set for unrestricted free agency this spring. There are 20 free agents overall — 17 UFAs, one restricted free agent (Jaylen Warren) and two exclusive-rights free agents (Ryan McCollum and Jeremiah Moon).

Depending on what personnel package the Steelers open up in offense and defense (and if Donte Jackson is active despite a back injury), roughly 8-10 starters are soon-to-be free agents. And that doesn’t even count UFAs who are on season-ending injured reserve (offensive linemen James Daniels and Nate Herbig) or players whose contract for 2025 have a high enough salary and are likely to be cut (such as Preston Smith).

Those on the list of free agents range from the household names (Russell Wilson and Najee Harris) to dependable longtime starters (Dan Moore Jr.) to the little-known specialists (Tyler Matakevich), and from the well-paid (Mike Williams) to those making the minimum salary (MyCole Pruitt, Scotty Miller).

Some of the above will be Steelers in 2025. Others won’t be in black and gold again in a regular-season game in Pittsburgh.

    3. Not Canton-like

Ask Steelers players about their well-liked teammate Cordarrelle Patterson, a common refrain is “he’s a future Hall of Famer.” That might be true — Patterson holds the NFL record for most career kickoff-return touchdowns with nine.

But what Patterson has brought to the Steelers at 33 in his 12th pro season hasn’t been Hall of Fame worthy.

Signed with intent after the NFL modified its kickoff rules in an effort to encourage more returns, Patterson has mostly been a dud. His 21.8-yard average on returns ranks second-last among any player in the league who has returned as many kickoffs as him (11). Every player who has that many returns has at least one of more than 35 yards — Patterson’s season long. Petterson has accounted for half of the returned deep kickoffs by the Steelers this season — and in regards to average, he lags behind the other two who have done so (Warren, 24.3, and Aaron Shampklin, 25.3).

The Steelers as a team rank dead last in the league in average kick return yards (22.5).

    4. Chase-ing history

Ja’Marr Chase is on the cusp of becoming the fifth receiver since the 1970 AFL/NFL merger to lead the NFL in catches, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. Chase heads into the finale atop the league in all three with 117, 1,612 and 16, respectively.

With 68 receiving yards against the Steelers, Chase would surpass Hall of Famer Randy Moss (5,396) for the third-most over a player’s first four seasons in NFL history. With a big game (184 or more yards) he can pass Michael Thomas for No. 2 all-time through four seasons.

Only current Minnesota Vikings star Justin Jefferson (5,899) is out of reach for Chase in that statistic.

  • Is Vikings-Lions finale the greatest matchup in NFL regular-season history?

Is Vikings-Lions finale the greatest matchup in NFL regular-season history?

There have been several Super Bowl matchups, in terms of the strength of both teams, that aren’t as good as Minnesota Vikings at Detroit Lions to finish this regular season.

The NFL caught a huge break when the Vikings held on to beat the Green Bay Packers in Week 17. That ensured the Vikings’ Week 18 game at the Lions would be for the NFC North title and the No. 1 seed in the conference. It had to be the easiest flex decision in the history of the league. The NFL moved the game to Sunday night, and there’s sure to be a playoff-level audience for it.

There aren’t many regular-season matchups ever that can compare to what we’re going to see. Start with this: The matchup will feature the most combined wins for any regular-season game in NFL history.

The winner of Sunday night’s game will become just the ninth team in NFL history to finish a regular season with 15 or more wins. The loser will have the most wins of any wild-card team in history. The record was held by the 1999 Tennessee Titans, who had 13 wins. Even with the 17th game having been added to the schedule in 2021, that history being made by both teams is remarkable. It’s even harder to believe they happen to meet each other in the last game of the season.

It’s unprecedented for two teams with records this good to meet so late in the season. The fact that they’re divisional rivals and happened to be scheduled against each other for the final game of the regular season makes it a perfect storm.

Not all great matchups have produced great games. But there are only a few matchups that can be compared to this week’s Vikings at Lions clash.

The most anticipated regular-season matchup in NFL history might have come in 1990. The New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers each started the season 10-0. Both teams lost their 11th game before meeting, but it was rare to see two 10-1 teams face off. The 49ers won that Monday night game 7-3.

The 2018 meeting between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams turned out to be the greatest game in regular-season history, and it was a great matchup as well. Both teams were 9-1. The Rams won 54-51.

For star power, it’s tough to beat the 2007 clash between the 8-0 New England Patriots and 7-0 Indianapolis Colts. One of the classic Tom Brady vs. Peyton Manning matchups, the Patriots came back in the fourth quarter to win 24-20 on a Brady to Kevin Faulk touchdown with a little more than three minutes remaining.

In terms of history, a 1985 game between a 12-0 Chicago Bears team and the Miami Dolphins had a ton of hype, and ultimately was the only loss for the famed ’85 Bears. In 2007, the New England Patriots finished off a 16-0 season with a win at the New York Giants in a much-anticipated matchup.

The last time two teams met in the regular-season finale with the No. 1 seed on the line was 1993 between the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants, an overtime Cowboys win that became famous for Emmitt Smith putting up 229 yards on 42 touches despite a separated shoulder.

The best comparison for the stakes involved and the gaudy records for both teams came in the final game of the 1967 season. The 11-0-2 Baltimore Colts faced the 10-1-2 Los Angeles Rams, and in that era only division winners made the playoffs. That meant the winner won the Coastal Division and went to the playoffs and the loser’s season was over. The Colts lost 34-10 and didn’t make the playoffs despite an 11-1-2 record. Johnny Unitas became the first of only two NFL MVPs in league history from a non-playoff team.

In terms of records, there have been only three matchups in NFL history between two teams that were both 10 or more games over .500, and one happened almost a century ago.

The NFL couldn’t have had any idea when it scheduled Vikings at Lions in Week 18 that it would be flexed to Sunday night, much less be in the conversation as the greatest regular-season matchup in the league’s history.

The matchup isn’t just fascinating because of the records for each team. The stakes for the game are rare. One team gets a division title, the No. 1 seed and a week off. The losing team has its Super Bowl path get much tougher.

The difference between the No. 1 seed and the No. 5 seed, which the losing team will drop to, is immense. The No. 1 seed will be the only team in the conference with a bye and will be two home wins from a Super Bowl. The No. 5 seed will have to go on the road in wild-card weekend, likely against an explosive Tampa Bay Buccaneers team, then perhaps have to play the Eagles (currently 13-3) in the divisional round before a road matchup against the No. 1 seeded NFC North champ.

For a pair of teams that have never won a Super Bowl between them — the Lions have famously never even been to one — what happens on Sunday night could ultimately be the difference between a quick playoff exit and a historic run to the Super Bowl.

On top of it all, these two teams have already played one of the best games of this season. Back in Week 7, the Lions gave away a 28-17 fourth quarter lead, but drove downfield trailing 29-28 and kicked a game-winning field goal with 15 seconds left to get a key 31-29 win. That’s one of two Vikings losses all season.

The final game of the 2024 regular season has everything. The stakes are enormous for two teams chasing their first Super Bowl. They both have historically excellent records. They had one great matchup already. If it’s not the greatest matchup in NFL regular-season history, it’s not too far from the top spot.

The Vikings-Lions finale this Sunday is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated matchups in NFL regular-season history. With both teams vying for a playoff spot and the stakes at an all-time high, this game has all the makings of an instant classic.

The Vikings are coming off a thrilling win against the Bears, keeping their playoff hopes alive as they sit on the cusp of a wild card spot. Led by quarterback Kirk Cousins and dynamic playmakers like Dalvin Cook and Justin Jefferson, the Vikings offense has been firing on all cylinders in recent weeks.

On the other side, the Lions are looking to play spoiler as they aim to end their season on a high note. Despite their record, the Lions have been competitive in many of their games this season and have shown flashes of potential under new head coach Dan Campbell.

With both teams playing for their postseason lives, this matchup is sure to be a back-and-forth battle until the final whistle. The implications of this game, the talent on both sides of the ball, and the potential for a dramatic finish make this game a strong contender for the title of the greatest matchup in NFL regular-season history.

Be sure to tune in this Sunday to witness what could go down as one of the most memorable games in NFL history.
