  • Bonnies Host Dayton Tuesday Night in Reilly Center

    The St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team returns home to the Reilly Center to face off against Dayton on Tuesday night. The Bonnies are seeking to bounce back from a three-game losing skid against a trio of the A-10’s front-runners in VCU, George Mason and Duquesne while welcoming in a Dayton squad that responded from a three-game skid of its own earlier this month with wins in their last three.

    • St. Bonaventure is looking to snap what is just its second three-game losing skid in Atlantic 10 play since 2020.

    • Bonnies head coach Mark Schmidt enters Tuesday’s game with 399 career victories as a

      Division I head coach. He has scored 317 of those wins leading Bona’s program.

    • Senior Chance Moore returned to the Bonnies lineup Friday night at VCU and responded with a game-high 21 points along with eight rebounds. Moore played all but one minute of action after missing the game last Tuesday vs. George Mason due to a toe injury suffered Jan. 18 at Duquesne.

    • Fifth-year captain Noel Brown had his second double-double in the last three games with 10 points and 10 rebounds Friday night. Prior to the game at Duquesne, Brown had never recorded double-digit rebounds in a game.

    • Bona is trying to snap a rare two-game losing skid in A-10 play at home. The Bonnies are 60-19 at home in Atlantic 10 play since 2015-16.

    Tuesday’s game will be the fifth of five Bonnies men’s games broadcast live on YES Network this season. St. Bonaventure Athletics and YES announced a partnership earlier this fall to air both men’s and women’s games on the network in 2024-25. The YES broadcasts will also be streamed on The Gotham Sports App. YES has ranked as the most-watched regional sports network in the country in 18 of the last 21 years and owns the exclusive regional media rights of the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Nets. Click here to read more about the agreement. 

    All Bonnies basketball games broadcast on YES will also still stream through ESPN+ as well for fans with a subscription to that service.

    1:13 – Melvin Council Jr. has played all but 1:13 in Bona’s last eight games.

    • Dayton was picked to finish second in the A-10 preseason poll, receiving six first-place votes to slot behind preseason favorite VCU.

    • Senior forward Nate Santos was named to the A-10’s preseason first team. Santos finished last year as the second leading scorer (11.7) and rebounder (6.3) for Dayton. He was also fourth in the A-10 in three-point shooting. This season, Santos paces the squad at 14.6 ppg while Enoch Cheeks checks in at 13.1 ppg.

    • Dayton has two ranked wins on the season, scoring impressive non-conference triumphs over then-No. 2 UConn and then-No. 6 Marquette.

    • Dayton comes into the game 22th in the nation in assist/turnover ratio (1.57). Malachi Smith is the A-10’s leader in assists at six per game.

    • Dayton is second in the A-10 in field goal percentage at over 47 percent and first in 3-point field goal percentage at better than 36 percent.

    SERIES HISTORY
    This marks the 41st meeting all-time between the Bonnies and Flyers with Dayton owning a 29-11advantage.

    In the last meeting at the Reilly Center back in February 2023, St. Bonaventure snapped what was a seven-game losing streak vs. Dayton dating to 2016 which had been far and away the longest skid for the Bonnies vs. an A-10 opponent in recent memory.

    Last year, the Bonnies lost their fifth in a row at UD Arena against a nationally-ranked Flyers squad. The Bonnies have not won in Dayton against the Flyers since 2016, but in years since, though, the Bonnies have picked up two big wins otherwise in Dayton: St. Bonaventure defeated VCU in the 2021 Atlantic 10 Championship Game at UD Arena and also won at the venue in 2018, knocking off UCLA in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament that year.

  • Nic Cage Returns To Work As Private Eye Ben Reilly In Newly Revealed Set Photos


    It’s business as usual in Los Angeles now the worst of the wildfires is over and Spider-Noir resumed shooting yesterday. Lead star Nicolas Cage, no stranger to comic book adaptations, has been spotted in costume as Ben Reilly, albeit in his P.I. gear rather than a super-suit. 

    The actor first played this version of Spidey in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and became an instant fan-favourite. The fact he’s getting to reprise the role in live-action isn’t something we ever expected, though this Spider-Man is Ben, not Peter Parker (we don’t think that makes him a clone; it’s more than likely a result of Sony not wanting to confuse audiences). 

    It’s been a while since we got any updates about Spider-Noir but MGM and Amazon Prime appear to be moving full steam ahead with the streaming series. 

    While it was put into development before Sony Pictures pulled the plug on its villain-led Marvel Universe, should the show prove to be a hit, we’d imagine the studio will begin focusing on Spidey’s many Variants on the big and small screen moving forward. 

    Last year, Cage opened up on what led to him reprising a role he first played in the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

    “I know that the phone’s going to be ringing off the hook to play serial killers after ‘Longlegs,’” he explained. “And that’s not really what I like to do. I don’t like violence. I don’t want to play people who are hurting people. One of the things that I like about this potential show is that it’s fantasy. It’s not really people beating people up. Monsters are involved.”

    In terms of Spider-Noir plot details, it’s been revealed that the series follows “an ageing and down on his luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.”

    Oren Uziel (Mortal Kombat) and Steve Lightfoot (The Punisher) are co-showrunners, while Harry Bradbeer is set to direct, and executive produce the first two episodes of the series.

    Cage will be joined in Spider-Noir by Lamorne Morris (as Robbie Robertson), Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin), Abraham Popoola (Atlas, The Rig), Li Jun Li (Babylon, Sex/Life) and Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire, Ben-Hur).

    Lukas Haas (Inception), Cameron Britton (Mindhunters), Cary Christopher (Days of Our Lives,), Michael Kostroff (Wizard of Lies), Scott MacArthur (El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie), Joe Massingill (Barry), Whitney Rice (Suits), Amanda Schull (12 Monkeys), and Karen Rodriguez (Swarm) round out the supporting cast. 

    Spider-Noir will premiere on the MGM+ linear channel in the U.S. and globally on Prime Video.

    BRISBANE, Australia — Novak Djokovic was beaten 7-6 (6), 6-3 by big-serving Reilly Opelka in the Brisbane International quarterfinals on Friday.

    Opelka served 16 aces — including one to finish off each set — to earn one of the biggest wins of the American’s career.

    “I was just focused on my spots,” Opelka said. “If I hit them, it’s hard to get them back. If there’s anyone that can, it’s him.”

    Djokovic, 37, was playing his first tournament of the year. The 24-time Grand Slam champion is preparing for the Australian Open, which starts on Jan. 12 and which he has won 10 times.

    “We have nothing to lose coming in against him. He’s the greatest player ever,” Opelka added. “So you end up playing more free and you take a lot more risk. If you play your normal level or even above a normal level, he’s going to win every time. So it’s tough in his position because he gets guys that are good players that they roll the dice. And on a on a day like this when a lot of things go my way, that’s how it works out.”

    New coach Andy Murray will join Djokovic in Melbourne.

    Opelka achieved a career-high ranking of No. 17 in Feb. 2022 before undergoing hip surgery later that year to remove a benign tumor. He’s now No. 293.

    “It was tough. A lot of uncertainty, a lot of doubt,” Opelka said.

    In the semifinals, Opelka will face Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, who beat Jakub Mensik 7-5, 7-6 (5). The other semifinal will feature Jiri Lehecka against Grigor Dimitrov.

    Lehecka beat Nicolas Jarry 6-4, 6-4, and Dimitrov advanced when Jordan Thompson retired while Dimitrov was ahead 6-1, 2-1.

He also won the pair’s only ATP tour-level meeting last year in similar conditions in Adelaide. The Czech has also arguably had the tougher route to reach this stage, needing to upset Holger Rune 7-5 6-3 in the first round.Nicolas Jarry must serve well and target Lehecka’s backhand, but the Czech should have enough here.

    Jordan Thompson vs Grigor Dimitrov

    Head-to-head: Dimitrov 2-1 Thompson

    It was at this stage of the ATP Brisbane International in 2024 that Jordan Thompson defeated Rafael Nadal 5-7 7-6(6) 6-3 in a three-hour thriller. Who did the Australian play next? Grigor Dimitrov, losing to the Bulgarian in straight sets. Thompson will have the chance to take revenge here. Thompson clearly enjoys playing at this tournament, but then so does defending champion Dimitrov. The Frenchman has looked great in Brisbane, most recently upsetting Frances Tiafoe in straight sets. Jakub Mensik also has a lot of upside, coming off a 26-20 record in 2024 (which was arguably an underperformance) with five top 20 wins. But while both ended last season in great form, it’s hard to look away past Mpetshi Perricard given the rhythm he is in on serve and the confidence he’s had in his groundstrokes. Indeed, he’s yet to lose his serve this tournament. Expect the Frenchman to win in two close sets.

    After a tough season ruined by injuries in 2024, could Reilly Opelka make a return to the top 20?     Djokovic took his only break point opportunity in the first set, helping him to race into a 4-1 lead and to take the set within 36 minutes.

    Monfils, 38, missed a simple forehand on serve at 1-1 and the Frenchman failed to take a point in the remainder of the game as Djokovic broke early in the second set.

    Djokovic held serve three times from there and broke Monfils again at 5-3 to wrap up his 20th career win against the Frenchman.

    Opelka awaits Djokovic in the quarter-finals, when the pair will play each other for the first time.

    The 24-time Grand Slam winner says he will have to tailor his game to face the big-serving American, who hit 25 aces against Arnaldi.

    “Opelka has been injured and he struggled a lot for a couple of years,” said Djokovic.

    “My gosh, I’m going to have to probably step back a few steps for that first serve.”

    Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard wasted little time in showing opponent Frances Tiafoe and the Brisbane International presented by Evie crowd what he was about on Thursday when he fired four aces in his opening service game against the American.

    The 21-year-old’s red-hot start set the tone for the match, with Tiafoe unable to answer the Frenchman’s power. Under the Brisbane heat, Mpetshi Perricard hammered 20 aces and saved both break points he faced to earn a 6-4, 7-6(4) second-round victory.

    ”I was very warm from the first game,” Mpetshi Perricard said when asked about his fast start. “I didn’t see the speed of the serves but over 230kmh is very fast, so I am pleased.”

    The World No. 31 hit 36 aces in his win against Nick Kyrgios in his opening match, also serving a game of aces, and backed that up with a confident performance against Tiafoe to improve to 6-1 against Top 20 players.

    “It was a good match,” said Mpetshi Perricard, who led the Tour with an average of 19 aces per match last season. “It is never easy to play against Frances. I did well in the first set and then battled in the second. I tried to put some pressure on his second serve and it worked, so I am pleased with my performance today.”

    Mpetshi Perricard is aiming to clinch his third tour-level title this week. A year ago, the Frenchman was outside the Top 200 in the PIF ATP Rankings but starts this season at No. 31, having won ATP Tour trophies in Lyon and Basel in 2024.

    In a day of success for big servers, 6’11” Reilly Opelka also advanced. The American struck 25 aces according to Infosys ATP Stats en route to defeating Matteo Arnaldi 7-6(9), 7-6(4). Opelka saved one set point in the first set and converted on his third match point in the second-set tie-break to reach his first ATP Tour quarter-final since 2022 (Delray Beach).

    At No. 293 in the PIF ATP Rankings, Opelka is the second-lowest ranked quarter-finalist in Brisbane history. Rafael Nadal was the lowest when he advanced to the last eight in 2024. Opelka will meet top seed Novak Djokovic or Frenchman Gael Monfils in the quarter-finals.

    Earlier, #NextGenATP Czech Jakub Mensik became the fourth-youngest quarter-finalist in tournament history when he moved past Serbian lucky loser Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-2 in just 66 minutes.

    The 19-year-old, who competed at last month’s Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF, leads Lajovic 2-0 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series. Into his sixth tour-level quarter-final, Mensik will next face Mpetshi Perricard.
