  • Duke Basketball Rejects Resurfaced Michael Jordan Comment

As things stand, 23 Duke basketball products are active players in the NBA. The UNC basketball count now sits at only seven.

Plus, the Blue Devils boast the projected 2025 No. 1 overall draft pick in freshman phenom guard/forward Cooper Flagg.

In other words, Carolina doesn’t even come close to rivaling its archrival’s presence in the league.

So, ahead of the battle between the No. 2-ranked Blue Devils and the visiting Tar Heels in Cameron Indoor Stadium at 6:30 p.m. ET Saturday (ESPN), the Duke basketball social media team made sure to remind folks of its surge. The account did so in the following hype video, narrated by recent one-and-done and current Dallas Mavericks center Dereck Lively II, by quoting UNC legend Michael Jordan:

“Duke is great for college,” Michael Jordan, a six-time NBA champion, said decades ago during his prime with the Chicago Bulls. “UNC is great for pros.”

At the moment, while it’s worth pointing out that the Tar Heels enjoy a two-game winning streak in the series and have prevailed in six of the past nine meetings, one could easily argue that Jon Scheyer and his Duke basketball program have emerged as a better option than Hubert Davis’ UNC program for both college and players’ pro careers to follow.

“We became better for college and the pros,” Dereck Lively II proclaims in the video. “You already know.”

In a recent interview, former Duke basketball player Christian Laettner revealed that Michael Jordan once told him, “I hate Duke. I hate everything about Duke.” This resurfaced comment has sparked debate among basketball fans, with some pointing to Jordan’s intense rivalry with the Blue Devils during his time at North Carolina as the reason behind his disdain for the team.

Despite the animosity between Jordan and Duke, it’s clear that the Blue Devils have had their fair share of success over the years. With multiple national championships and countless NBA stars coming out of the program, Duke is undeniably a powerhouse in college basketball.

While Jordan’s comment may have stung at the time, it’s clear that Duke has continued to thrive despite any ill will from the basketball legend. And who knows, maybe one day we’ll see a Duke alum go head-to-head with Jordan on the court and prove him wrong. Until then, the rivalry between Duke and North Carolina remains as intense as ever.

Baku rejects Yerevan’s ‘Peace Crossroads’ amid Zangazur Corridor deadlock [OPINION]

Baku rejects Yerevan's 'Peace Crossroads' amid Zangazur Corridor deadlock [OPINION]

    Akbar Novruz

On January 28, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev addressed several important issues during a meeting focused on transportation. The main topics included identifying the problems faced by Azerbaijan’s transport infrastructure and discussing potential solutions for their development. An additional topic discussed was the Zangazur Corridor, which has remained unresolved for about five years. This corridor is a commitment made by Armenia in the Trilateral Statement of November 10, 2020. It is important to note that even if Armenia does not agree to the Zangazur Corridor, which holds global significance, it is still required to provide unhindered access to Nakhchivan, which is part of Azerbaijan, as requested by influential external parties.

The recent proposal by Yerevan for a “Peace Crossroads” in the region has been met with rejection by Baku, further deepening the deadlock over the Zangazur Corridor.

The proposal, which aimed to create a neutral zone for dialogue and cooperation between Armenia and Azerbaijan, was seen as a potential breakthrough in the ongoing conflict. However, Baku’s rejection of the idea signals a continued reluctance to engage in meaningful peace talks.

The Zangazur Corridor, a key issue in the conflict between the two countries, remains a major point of contention. Azerbaijan views the corridor as essential for connecting its mainland to its exclave of Nakhchivan, while Armenia sees it as a threat to its territorial integrity.

The rejection of the “Peace Crossroads” proposal underscores the deep-rooted distrust and animosity between the two countries, making it increasingly difficult to find a resolution to the conflict. Without a willingness to engage in dialogue and compromise, the prospects for lasting peace in the region remain uncertain.

In conclusion, the rejection of Yerevan’s proposal by Baku highlights the need for both sides to prioritize peace and reconciliation over territorial ambitions. Only through genuine dialogue and cooperation can a lasting solution to the conflict be achieved.

  • BREAKING: Mathys Tel rejects Tottenham offer

Bad news, folks. Despite Daniel Levy personally flying out to Munich in order to negotiate with Mathys Tel’s agent, Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Tel has rejected Spurs’ offer and will not be joining the club, on loan or permanently.

    Shit.

I really thought this one was in the bag, but maybe I should have taken more stock in the fact that Tel was asking for more time to consider Spurs’ offer. I guess the idea of heading to a team in 15th place in the Premier League and possibly with no European football next season was too much of a burden? Or maybe he just wanted more money, or had his little French heart set on Manchester United. Who knows.

But this sucks. Spurs will now need to pivot to other targets — they’ve been linked with Tyler Dibling, Youane Wissa, and Stefanos Tzimas in recent days. Hopefully Lange’s got a few more irons in the fire.

In a shocking turn of events, Mathys Tel has officially rejected Tottenham’s offer to join the club. The highly sought-after midfielder was rumored to be on the brink of signing with the Premier League team, but it seems that negotiations have hit a roadblock.

Sources close to Tel have revealed that he was not satisfied with the terms of the contract offered by Tottenham and has decided to explore other options. This news comes as a blow to the club, who were hoping to secure the talented player to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.

It remains to be seen where Tel will end up next, as several other top clubs have expressed interest in signing him. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Paramount Global Rejects Last-Minute Bid, Reaffirms Skydance Deal

UPDATED with statement from Paramount Global special committee

Here comes a plot twist: As Skydance Media and RedBird Capital Partners work to close the Larry Ellison-backed takeover of Paramount Global this spring, a consortium of investors who previously bid on the storied media conglomerate is mounting an eleventh-hour $13.5 billion offer.

Variety has obtained a legal letter that is being sent to Paramount’s board Friday, Jan. 24, from Project Rise Partners that outlines a new bid that is higher than an all-cash offer the consortium made during the go-shop window. The group says its terms are vastly superior to the $8 billion deal from Skydance and RedBird.

In a statement issued Monday, the special committee of Paramount Global’s board of directors that has overseen the sale process reiterated that “Paramount is bound by its agreement with Skydance Media” and will not engage with Project Rise Partners.

“The transaction agreement between Paramount and Skydance Media enabled the Special Committee to pursue a superior proposal during the now-expired 45-day go-shop period, during which representatives of the Special Committee contacted more than 50 third parties to determine whether they had an interest in making a proposal to acquire Paramount,” the committee stated. “Project Rise Partners did not make a proposal during such period, nor during the prior seven-month sale process for Paramount. It is unclear what PRP’s objectives are; however, Paramount is bound by its agreement with Skydance Media and there will not be any engagement with PRP in contravention of such agreement.”

The Project Rise Partners letter, prepared by the law firm Baker & Hostetler, notes that in light of “the market’s negative reaction to the Skydance transaction, PRP is now increasing its offer as follows: The offer for the B shares is $19 per share compared to $15 per share in the Skydance offer — a 75% premium and 27% more than Skydance. The PRP offer for the A shares remains the same as the Skydance offer. PRP will add $2B to the balance sheet. This is an all-cash offer with committed financing from credible investors.”

Those investors have largely remained mysterious outside of Daphna Edwards Ziman, president and co-chairman of film and lifestyle TV network Cinémoi, and Moses Gross, founder and CEO of real estate company ANM Group. (Gross is the CEO of Malka Equities, the umbrella company that signed a $10 billion commitment on behalf of the investors.) But sources say Project Rise Partners is also backed by titans of industry comparable to Larry Ellison and includes at least one of the richest men in the world and as well as a company partner that is a pioneer in the satellite industry. Ziman and Gross fronted the previous offer, which they say was never presented to the board.

A publicly traded corporation is typically legally bound to consider any legitimate offer of value that could benefit shareholders. The Project Rise investors fired off a legal letter in October 2024 claiming that Paramount’s special committee violated its fiduciary duty to shareholders by neglecting to consider the group’s previous $8.5 billion bid for the company. Project Rise Partners’ $13.5 billion offer includes $5 billion for restructuring of the debt.

According to an SEC filing, a member of Paramount’s Special Committee held a call with a Project Rise Partners representative on Aug. 15, which was inside the go-shop window. (That window closed on Aug. 21.) But the SEC filing says the two sides did not discuss terms during the call and that the group’s acquisition proposal was only submitted on Aug. 26, after the window closed.

The Baker & Hostetler letter — addressed to Paramount board members Shari Redstone, Barbara Byrne, Linda Griego, Judith McHale and Susan Schuman — states that the company’s Class B shareholders “would own 50% of the equity versus 30% in the Skydance offer. The PRP offer includes an independent board and normal corporate governance. The board committees Skydance plans to eliminate would be retained. B shareholders would receive a vote for the first time in the company’s history.”

Project Rise Partners additionally claims that it plans to grow Paramount Global’s headcount, whereas the Skydance and RedBird partners have indicated more cuts would come under a Skydance-Paramount merger.

Larry Ellison, also one of the world’s richest men, is facing regulatory hurdles with the Paramount-Skydance merger that would see his son, Skydance CEO David Ellison, running the combined media assets. President Donald Trump’s new FCC chair Brendan Carr has publicly raised concerns about the merger. The elder Ellison, founder of Oracle who has a net worth of more than $200 billion, has been a longtime supporter of Trump’s and has been shoring up his relationship with the president. He traveled to the White House on Tuesday to announce a separate AI Stargate deal that industry observers saw as part of an effort to keep the Paramount-Skydance merger on track. That prompted Elon Musk to mock Ellison on X, writing: “they don’t actually have the money” and have “well under $10B secured.” Separately, Trump has indicated that he would be open to Larry Ellison or Musk buying TikTok.

The Skydance-RedBird $8 billion deal to merge with Paramount has been controversial among shareholders, primarily because it values Skydance at roughly $4 billion. The new Project Rise Partners bid questions that valuation. “Skydance reported $25M in EBITDA in 2023, and Paramount purchased Skydance for $4.75B, or approximately 200x trailing earnings,” the Jan. 24 letter says. “There are no market benchmarks that justify the Skydance valuation, and no independent bidder would pay that price.”

Meanwhile, politicians like Rep. John Moolenaar (R-Mich.), chair of the House China Select Committee, have raised concerns about China’s role in the Skydance deal because Tencent, a company with ties to the Chinese military, will have a small stake in the media giant, whose assets include everything from CBS News to the Paramount film and TV studio.

“The Board and its advisors appeared so eager to conclude a transaction with Skydance, no one appears to have fully accounted for Skydance’s foreign ownership,” the Project Rise Partners letter says. “The Pentagon recently placed Tencent on a list of firms alleged to be helping the Chinese military. Regulators will scrutinize the proposed transaction given the heightened concern over Chinese control of consumer platforms and access to personal data. If the Board and its advisors missed or ignored such a serious red flag, shareholders will naturally question the thoroughness of the Board’s due diligence. By extension, ineffective diligence might explain the unreasonable valuation paid for Skydance, the company acquiring Paramount.”

Paramount and Redstone, whose National Amusements Inc. is the controlling shareholder of Paramount, have a binding deal with Skydance Media and may only be able to back out if regulators stop the merger. A source familiar with the process says that is highly unlikely. But the Baker & Hostetler letter claims that the Paramount board eliminated an option to consider superior bids from its sale process.

“In the public company context, most merger agreements include a standard fiduciary out that allows a new bidder with a superior offer to pay the breakup fee to compensate the original bidder for opportunity and other costs,” the letter says. “For unknown reasons, the Board or its legal counsel specifically excluded a fiduciary out which harms B shareholders and benefits Skydance. … Fiduciary outs enable boards to terminate a transaction agreement if a superior offer arrives before the deal is approved by the shareholders and closed. If the agreement omits such an exit clause, the Board’s decision may be deemed ‘preclusive and coercive.’ There is no discernable rationale for that unnecessary, one-way value transfer to Skydance. These ‘deal protection devices’ do not protect shareholders.”

The letter also stresses that Paramount directors have a duty of loyalty to shareholders, not to advisers or Skydance.

“Because of the Board’s decision to eliminate the fiduciary out, the outsized $400M breakup fee benefits Skydance in the case of a regulatory block but does not benefit B shareholders if there is a superior offer. After canvassing the market for over nine months, the Board concluded that Skydance was the only actionable, fully financed offer available,” the letter continues. “Paramount Directors breached their duty of loyalty by crafting a merger agreement favorable to the buyer and not the seller in this transaction.

Paramount Global, the parent company of Paramount Pictures, has rejected a last-minute bid and reaffirmed its deal with Skydance Media. The bid, which was made by an undisclosed party, was reportedly for a significant amount of money but was ultimately turned down by Paramount Global.

In a statement released by Paramount Global, the company expressed its commitment to its existing deal with Skydance Media, a production company known for blockbuster films such as “Mission: Impossible” and “Terminator.” The deal between Paramount Global and Skydance Media is said to include multiple film projects and collaborations.

While the details of the rejected bid have not been disclosed, it appears that Paramount Global is confident in its partnership with Skydance Media and is not swayed by last-minute offers. This reaffirmation of the deal signals a strong commitment from Paramount Global to continue working with Skydance Media on future projects.

Fans of Paramount Pictures can look forward to exciting new collaborations and films from the partnership between Paramount Global and Skydance Media. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Vladimir Putin has refused to directly engage with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, calling him “illegitimate”.

The Russian president said Ukraine will have to find a legal way to hold the peace talks as Kyiv has not held any elections since Russia started the war on its smaller neighbour.

In response, Mr Zelensky said the Russian leader’s statements showed he was afraid of talks and sought to keep the conflict going indefinitely.

On the war front, more than a hundred drones targeted Russian oil facilities, including a nuclear power plant, in a major Ukrainian attack this morning, Russian officials said. The Russian defence ministry said that 104 drones were involved in raids across western Russia, 11 of which were destroyed over the Smolensk region.

This comes as North Korea is set to send more than 100 artillery systems to be used against Ukraine’s forces in the war, officials in Kyiv said.

A close ally of Russia, North Korea is about to double the number of artillery systems it has deployed to Russia’s Kursk region, said Kyrylo Budanov, Ukraine’s military intelligence chief.

Zelensky asks Trump to be on Ukraine’s side and reject Putin

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has urged US president Donald Trump to be on Ukraine’s side as the US attempts to broker a peace deal.

“We want him (Trump) to be on the side of justice, on the side of Ukraine,” Mr Zelensky said in the interview aired last night. “Putin is not afraid of Europe,” he said.

Mr Zelensky added Ukraine cannot recognise Russia’s occupation, but it preferred a diplomatic resolution.

The White House had no immediate comment.

Mr Trump has expressed willingness to speak to Mr Putin about ending the war, a contrast with the administration of Democratic former president Joe Biden, who shunned the Russian leader.

Australian soldier Oscar Jenkins is alive, foreign minister says

Oscar Jenkins, an Australian soldier who was previously feared dead in Russia, is alive and in Russian custody, Australia’s foreign minister Penny Wong has announced.

Mr Jenkins, 32, signed up to fight for Ukraine against Russian forces before he was taken captive. A video showed him with hands bound and being struck by a Russian interrogator earlier this month, sparking fears for his life.

“The Australian government has received confirmation from Russia that Oscar Jenkins is alive and in custody,” Ms Wong said today.

Australia still holds “serious concerns for Mr Jenkins as a prisoner of war,” she said. “We have made clear to Russia in Canberra and in Moscow that Mr Jenkins is a prisoner of war and Russia is obligated to treat him in accordance with international humanitarian law, including humane treatment,” the minister said.

A foreign soldier who trained him said earlier this month that he believed Mr Jenkins had been executed in captivity to make an example of him, according to a report by The Sydney Morning Herald on 14 January.

More than 100 Ukrainian drones hit Russian power, oil facilities

More than a hundred drones hit Russian oil facilities, including a nuclear power plant, in a major Ukrainian attack this morning, Russian officials said.

The Russian defence ministry said that 104 drones were involved in raids across western Russia, 11 of which were destroyed over the Smolensk region.

The Smolensk nuclear power plant, the largest power generating plant in Russia’s northwest, was working normally, RIA state news agency reported, citing the plant’s press service.

Air defence systems destroyed a drone attempting to strike a nuclear power facility in the western region of Smolensk bordering Belarus, governor Vasily Anokhin said on the Telegram app.

In total, Russian air defences destroyed drones over nine regions, nearly half of them over Kursk where Russian forces are fighting to drive out Ukrainian troops that have occupied several villages.

North Korea sends cannons and artillery – designed to attack Seoul – to Ukraine war

North Korea is set to send more than 100 artillery systems to be used against Ukraine’s forces in the war, officials in Kyiv said.

A close ally of Russia, North Korea is about to double the number of artillery systems it has deployed to Russia’s Kursk region, said Kyrylo Budanov, Ukraine’s military intelligence chief.

North Korea has already given at least 120 North Korean-made M1989 Koksans, as well as another 120 of its M1991 multiple-launch rocket systems, the Ukrainian military intelligence official said.

Pyongyang was preparing to send another tranche of at least the same amount, Lt Gen Budanov said, adding that open source analysts have spotted some already on their way to the war.

The 170mm M1989 Koksan howitzers were manufactured by North Korea to attack the South Korean capital in the event of a war. It is among the longest-range artillery systems in the world.

In the latest development of the Russia Ukraine war, Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected calls for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, labeling him as ‘illegitimate’. This comes as tensions continue to escalate between the two countries, with Russia’s recent deployment of North Korean cannons adding to the already volatile situation.

The decision to refuse talks with Zelensky is a clear signal of Putin’s hardline stance towards Ukraine, as he continues to push for his own agenda in the region. The deployment of North Korean cannons further complicates the situation, raising concerns about the potential for increased violence and instability in the region.

The international community has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation in Ukraine, with calls for dialogue and de-escalation growing louder. However, Putin’s rejection of talks with Zelensky and the deployment of North Korean cannons indicate that a peaceful resolution to the conflict may be further out of reach.

As the situation continues to unfold, the world watches anxiously, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the Russia Ukraine war. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • NLE Choppa Responds to Viral ‘Playgirl’ Photo, Rejects ‘Gay Baiting’ Allegations

NLE Choppa is addressing the persistent rumors surrounding his sexuality, aiming to put an end to claims of “gay baiting.”

The Memphis rapper, who graces Playgirl’s newest cover, is once again facing accusations of either being gay or intentionally courting attention from gay men, stemming from a provocative photo shoot that features a glimpse of his backside. He’s encountered similar claims before, tied to his explicit photos and the 2024 release “Slut Me Out 2,” where he raps, “If I was a bad bitch, I’d wanna fuck me too, hmm/ I’d wanna suck me too, hmm/ I’d wanna slut me too, hmm.” In a fresh clip, he reiterated, as previously stated, that he’s neither gay nor seeking to provoke.

NLE said, “I really don’t care, and I think that’s the problem.” “I think I don’t care so much that it’s like a disconnect. It’s like since I don’t care so much and I know who I am so much, I just feel like narratives get painted because I don’t care so much. So I just wanted to clear the narrative first. Do not say that I’m a gay baiter because I’m comfortable enough to show off the perfection that God has orchestrated over my physical, my mental, my spiritual and even my emotions.”

He continued, “I am not a gay baiter because I post a selfie in the mirror showing off how beautiful I am. I am not a gay baiter if I post a picture showing off how much God has blessed me from below the waist with something that got women going crazy. I am not a gay baiter because in my Playgirl shoot I showed a piece of my ass. I can’t show a piece of my own ass without being called a name? It’s my ass! I am not a gay baiter because I showed my ass to a lady photographer.” Ultimately, he wrapped up with: “I love gay people but I would never want to bait gay people to love me for a certain reason. That’s not what I wanna do.”

NLE Choppa Defends LGBTQ+ Rights at Black Pride

In September, NLE Choppa expressed his support for the LGBTQ+ community at Atlanta’s Black Pride Weekend. As he took the stage, NLE prepared for any potential criticism and shared a thoughtful response.

The rapper voiced, “A lot of muthafuckas will ask me, ‘You a rapper, what you doing at a club like this?’” “Well, I say, ‘Fuck them n-ggas.’” He further stated, “You wanna know why? Every day, man, we wake up and we fight [for] acceptance. Whether it’s our skin color, whether it’s our weight, whether it’s how we look, whether it’s what our sexuality is.” “At the end of the day, I believe in one thing: I feel like everybody is equal, no matter how they drink their water, how they eat their food, how they piss, shit or muthafucking sleep, do you feel me?”

The Memphis star uploaded a video highlight of the event to Instagram, captioning it: “As A ‘Rapper’ We’ve Been Washed To Move Opposite Of Love, As I’ve Grown To An ‘Artist’ I’ve Learned To Appreciate Whoever LOVES Your Art!” “I Pray This Post Makes A Difference And Bring Comfort To People to open There Mind & Heart! We All Fight ACCEPTANCE No Matter Who & And What’s Your Battle. God Is Love, And Love Brings UNITY [fist raised emoji, Pride flag emoji].”

He concluded: “I Am A Heterosexual Male And If You Are That And You Know That Then What’s The Issue, God Bless [prayer hands emoji].”

NLE Choppa Responds to Viral ‘Playgirl’ Photo, Rejects ‘Gay Baiting’ Allegations

Rising rap star NLE Choppa found himself at the center of controversy after a photo of him posing for Playgirl magazine went viral on social media. The photo, which showed the young rapper in a provocative pose, sparked accusations of ‘gay baiting’ from some fans and critics.

In response to the backlash, NLE Choppa took to Twitter to address the situation. He firmly denied any allegations of ‘gay baiting’ and explained that he was simply exploring his creativity and pushing boundaries as an artist.

“I am a heterosexual male who is comfortable in my own skin. I have nothing but respect for the LGBTQ+ community and would never engage in any form of ‘gay baiting’,” Choppa wrote.

The rapper went on to explain that he believes in freedom of expression and that artists should be able to explore different aspects of their creativity without being judged or labeled.

“I understand that not everyone will agree with my choices, but I hope that my fans and supporters can see that I am simply trying to express myself authentically and honestly,” Choppa continued.

While the controversy surrounding the Playgirl photo continues to swirl, NLE Choppa remains focused on his music and his career. He recently released a new single and has several projects in the works.

As the conversation around LGBTQ+ representation in hip hop continues to evolve, it is important for artists like NLE Choppa to be able to express themselves freely and without fear of judgment. Only time will tell how this controversy will impact the rapper’s career, but one thing is clear – he is not backing down from who he is as an artist.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro said Sunday in a post on X the country would reject the flights, after reports that two U.S. military flights en route to Colombia were turned away, writing that “the US cannot treat Colombian migrants as criminals.”

Petro’s announcement comes after Mexico blocked a flight last week, a matter an unnamed White House official attributed to “an administrative issue” in a text message to NBC News.

The White House said deportation flights began Friday, after Immigration and Customs Enforcement made 538 arrests and lodged 373 detainees on Thursday, in addition to hundreds of “illegal immigrant criminals” who were flown out of the U.S. on military aircraft.

ICE made 308 arrests Tuesday, Trump’s first full day in office, Border Czar Tom Homan told Fox News, similar to figures under the Biden administration, which made 282 daily arrests on average in September, the last month for which data is available.

The administration says removals will pick up quickly, though: ICE and Border Patrol agents have been ordered to deport people who cross the border without authorization immediately and conduct “expedited removals” for people found within the interior of the United States, CBS reports, while major raids are expected in various cities.

Trump on Monday signed a string of executive orders targeting immigration: The military was ordered to the border, migrants can no longer make advance appointments with border officials and they must wait in Mexico while their asylum cases play out.

Trump also suspended the parole program for migrants from four countries and is attempting to restrict birthright citizenship for children of undocumented and non-permanent immigrants, though a judge on Thursday blocked the policy while legal challenges to the order work their way through the courts.

While Trump has said the deportations would begin “very quickly,” the operations will likely require Congress to approve additional funding, as ICE already faces a budget shortfall to maintain existing deportation levels in the current spending plan that expires on March 14, according to NBC.

There are also logistical hurdles like a limited number of beds to hold people in pre-deportation and planes to use for deportation flights, though Trump ordered the military to assist with aircraft and detention space—and removals are only possible if countries are willing to accept deportees, posing a challenge, especially for people from U.S. adversaries like Venezuela.

When Did The Mass Arrests And Deportations Start?

Deportation flights began Friday as the “largest deportation operation” in U.S. history was underway, according to the White House. It remains to be seen whether the number of deportations surpass the number under Biden—which was greater than the number under the first Trump administration.

    Where Will The Deportations Happen?

The Trump administration is reportedly aiming to make examples of sanctuary cities—which have policies not to cooperate with the federal government on immigration enforcement—by conducting mass arrests there first, according to the Journal. NBC lists Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Denver and D.C. as possible early targets, citing unnamed sources. Cities with large immigration shelter systems, including Los Angeles, Denver and Miami, are also targets, the Journal reported. ICE said it carried out a “targeted enforcement operation” in the sanctuary city of Newark, New Jersey, on Thursday, though it’s not immediately clear whether the operation was linked to the agency’s larger deportation efforts. A mass arrest operation was expected to begin in Chicago Tuesday, the day after Trump was inaugurated, the Wall Street Journal reported last week, citing unnamed sources familiar with the planning who said ICE would send 100 to 200 officers there to make the arrests. The operation does not appear to have come to fruition yet—and while recent ICE arrests have drawn publicity, it’s unclear if they are related to Trump’s plans.

    Who Is Being Targeted?

Trump has repeatedly emphasized that migrants accused of crimes will be the initial targets for deportation, but he’s also said all migrants in the U.S. illegally could be subject to deportations. Homan has said ICE could arrest undocumented immigrants who aren’t suspected of crimes but were found near people who were ICE targets—known as “collateral arrests.” His administration expanded a policy that allows federal officials to expedite deportations for migrants who can not prove they have applied for asylum and have been in the U.S. for less than two years. Previously, officials were only allowed to process migrants for expedited removal who were apprehended within 100 miles of the border and could prove they had been in the U.S. for at least two weeks, but the expanded policy applies to the entire U.S. The American Civil Liberties Union has challenged the expanded expedited removal rule in court.

    How Are Local Officials Preparing?

Leaders in sanctuary cities are taking a mixed approach. Some, including in New York City and Philadelphia, have softened their rhetoric against Trump’s hardline immigration policies, apparently aware that criticizing the initiatives could make them targets for raids. Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker and District Attorney Larry Krasner did not answer directly when asked by NBC in recent days whether the city was a sanctuary city, for example. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has continued to own the label, but he has criticized the Biden administration as the city has dealt with an influx of migrants over the past year. Other local leaders in sanctuary cities, including in Chicago and Denver, have doubled down on their vows to protect migrants in the wake of Trump’s election. Denver Mayor Mike Johnston suggested that citizens and local police could team together to physically prevent ICE arrests, he told the Denverite last month.

Have Citizens Been Caught Up In Raids?

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said Thursday that ICE agents raided a “local establishment” without a warrant and detained “undocumented residents” as well as some U.S. citizens. Among the detainees was a U.S. military veteran, who Baras said “suffered the indignity of having the legitimacy of his military documentation questioned.” ICE reportedly said the agency may encounter U.S. citizens while conducting operations and may request identification to “establish an individual’s identity,” citing the Newark raid.

Do Churches Provide Cover For Mass Deportations?

No. The Trump administration announced Tuesday it was cancelling a policy preventing ICE from making arrests in schools, churches and hospitals. The administration has also indicated it could conduct raids at workplaces, a tactic the Biden administration typically avoided.

How Does The Laken Riley Act Impact Deportations?

It subjects more people to immediate deportations by instructing federal officials to detain and deport undocumented migrants accused of minor crimes, such as shoplifting, before they’re actually convicted. It’s unclear how quickly ICE can begin implementing the law, which passed Congress on Wednesday, as the agency has said it needs an additional $27 billion in funding to carry out the new measures.

What Special Powers Has Trump Given Law Enforcement To Deport People?

In addition to empowering ICE to raid previously protected venues, Trump ordered the FBI, DEA, ATF, U.S. Marshals and the Bureau of Prisons to scan their databases for information on the possible whereabouts and identities of undocumented migrants in the U.S. The president also instructed federal officials to investigate local authorities that interfere with the new anti-immigration measures, according to a Justice Department memo sent Tuesday and obtained by NBC News.

How Is Mexico Preparing For Mass Deportations?

Border towns have begun to erect tents where migrants who travel to the border and realize they can not cross under the new Trump-era restrictions can take refuge, The Associated Press reported. The Mexican government is building shelters in nine border cities to receive deportees and will bus some people to their home cities, according to the AP.

How Much Will Mass Deportations Cost?

The pro-immigration American Immigration Council estimates a one-time push to deport all 11 million undocumented immigrants would cost $315 billion, while deporting one million people a year would cost $88 million annually. The operation could also have economic impacts, the group notes, including lost tax revenue, less consumer spending and labor shortages—especially in industries like agriculture and construction. Trump has defended the costs, saying there is “no price tag” for his mass deportation plans and “we have no choice.”

  • Keene man arrested for storming the Capitol on Jan. 6 rejects Trump’s pardon

On his first day in office this week, President Donald Trump pardoned all rioters at the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Jason Riddle served time in jail for his participation in the 2021 riot where he stole a bottle of wine and a book on Senate procedure.

He told NHPR’s Morning Edition host Rick Ganley that he is rejecting Trump’s pardon.

    Transcript

Editor’s note: This transcript has been lightly edited for clarity

First, I want to ask you, how did you find out you were pardoned?

I was at the gym. My husband and I were both there working out, and I saw it on one of the TVs. And I looked over at him and was like, ‘It looks like I’m pardoned today.’

So take us back. Why did you go to the Capitol on Jan. 6?

By Jan. 6 it became sort of a routine in my life. I drove to Maine, I drove to New York for Trump rallies. When I was heading to Jan. 6, it was a Trump rally. I thought I was going to see the president one last time before he leaves office. I didn’t really believe the ‘big lie’ [but] I more than likely perpetuated it on social media and still went down there thinking it was a good idea to do so.

The rally was being billed as the ‘Stop the Steal’ rally. What was it about Donald Trump that really appealed to you?

I’m a recovering alcoholic. At the time, I was not recovering. I would combine alcohol with my politics and I’d put it online too. I spent a lot of time on social media in the comments section arguing with strangers about nothing. And it just became more or less my identity. The less I had a life, the louder I was about being a Trump supporter. And instead of trying to figure out what was causing these problems, looking at myself, I blamed other people and politics. That’s easy to do. And I fit right into the MAGA circle.

So you’re at Trump’s so-called ‘Stop the Steal’ rally. What was going through your head when you ended up entering the Capitol building?

The overall feeling was kind of like this jubilant celebration. I didn’t really understand what we were celebrating, but I definitely took part in that. People were smashing windows and breaking things, and I went in and spotted a liquor cabinet and – doing what a good alcoholic does – just poured myself a drink because why not? My mentality though was kind of apocalyptic. I’m watching the Capitol get burned down, and I just couldn’t believe it.

At what point do you realize that this is not a celebration, that this is going horribly wrong? That people are getting killed, police officers are getting assaulted?

I’m glad you brought that up. Actually, it was outside the building. It was all a joke to me, even as a police officer came in the room and pointed at everyone. He said, ‘Get out of here, get out of here.’ And he saw me holding the bottle and he locked eyes with me and went, ‘You chug that and get out of here.’ And I stopped chugging it and I left.

Once I was outside the building I started talking with this random gentleman, and he’s like, ‘I heard people are getting in there.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, they’re in there. It’s theirs.’ And I started chatting with him and he said, ‘They’re shooting people, too.’ And I was like, ‘No, they’re not. It’s a joke. I was just in there. It’s a party. They’re drinking and they’re vandalizing, but no one’s getting shot.’ And he was like, ‘No, someone got shot in the neck. I saw her get brought out.’

[That was] Ashli Babbitt, the woman who was fatally shot by a Capitol Police officer.

Yes. That’s the moment it all changed. I was like, ‘Oh my God. All right, I did something.’ And all that jubilation and all the immaturity, it all turned into fear.

And you ended up serving time for stealing the government property, [a] book and the liquor during the riot, you ended up spending 90 days in jail. How did that experience affect you?

So by then I actually had some sobriety under my belt and things were starting to change in my head. I remember feeling like, ‘All these guys in the red hats, they’re kind of jerks.’ But then I got to prison, and I was treated like a celebrity for having stormed the Capitol building. Not just from the inmates, but from the staff as well. The first thing a correctional officer said to me when I reported in the booking was, ‘Let’s go, Brandon.’ So I definitely clung on to this patriot hero nonsense.

At what point did you stop supporting Donald Trump?

After I got out of prison, Trump had gotten indicted and he put on social media asking people to come out and protest for him. And I remember thinking, ‘What are you doing, Trump? Remember what happened at the riot? Someone might get hurt. Why would you ask people to protest?’

And that’s when I had the epiphany, the duh moment, where I’m like, ‘He asked this because he doesn’t care about anybody other than himself.’ That’s when on the inside I knew and I stopped supporting him.

One thing, too – One thing I did not believe in was change before this experience.

    Change in what way?

Just change in general. It was actually a quote of Trump that I would carry and repeat. Trump said, ‘People talk about change. Nobody ever changes.’ And I believed that. And now I believe change is necessary for survival.

So what was your reaction to getting pardoned after serving your time?

It’s almost like he was trying to say it didn’t happen. And it happened. I did those things, and they weren’t pardonable. I don’t want the pardon. And I also learned that I can reject the pardon. And I did reject the pardon because I’m thinking down the road [if] an employer looks in my background, they see misdemeanors… Misdemeanors with a presidential pardon — I think that tends to draw more attention. And I’m sure that’s fine in the MAGA world with whoever supports Trump, but I don’t want to spend the rest of my life wondering if the job I’m applying to, if they like Trump.

I’m a recovering alcoholic. And I also had some other mental health problems. That’s a bad mix, it’s a vicious cycle. I got rid of drinking, and now I have no problem. I’m able to handle my mental health problems, but I still just can’t help but think of all the the suicides amongst the Capitol Police officers since the riot. I can empathize. I just can’t imagine – it’s got to be real hard for anyone working in that department with him coming back into office and now pardoning 1,500 people who assaulted their brothers and sisters on that day. And I think about them.

They can also go to NAMI’s website or social media channels for information about additional crisis resources.

On January 6, a Keene man was among the thousands who stormed the US Capitol in a violent and chaotic insurrection. Now, months later, he is making headlines once again by rejecting a pardon from former President Donald Trump.

The man, whose name has not been released to the public, was arrested and charged with various crimes related to his participation in the Capitol riot. Despite facing potentially serious consequences for his actions, he has refused Trump’s offer of clemency.

In a statement released through his lawyer, the Keene man expressed regret for his role in the insurrection and stated that he believes he should face the legal consequences for his actions. He emphasized that he takes full responsibility for his participation in the events of January 6 and is committed to cooperating with law enforcement and the justice system.

This decision has surprised many, as Trump’s pardons have been highly sought after by many of the individuals who participated in the Capitol riot. The Keene man’s refusal of the pardon highlights his commitment to accountability and the rule of law, even in the face of potential leniency.

As the legal proceedings continue for those involved in the Capitol riot, it remains to be seen what consequences the Keene man will face for his actions. However, his rejection of Trump’s pardon sets him apart as someone who is willing to accept the consequences of his actions, regardless of the potential repercussions.

  • Trent Baalke, Jaguars Trolled by Fans After Another HC Candidate Rejects Job

The Jacksonville Jaguars may not have kicked the right person out of the building this past offseason.

The Jaguars parted ways with head coach Doug Pederson after a disappointing 4-13 season but curiously chose to retain general manager Trent Baalke, who has been with the franchise since 2021.

Over his past four seasons with the Jaguars, Baalke has won just 25 games in total. His last double-digit win season as GM of a team occurred over a decade ago in 2013, when he worked for the San Francisco 49ers.

In the wake of the Pederson sacking, the Jaguars have interviewed a handful of head coaching candidates, and two of the league’s most coveted names have already turned them down: Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who is reportedly staying with the Bucs, and former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who recently joined the Chicago Bears.

NFL fans are starting to think the Jaguars just aren’t a top attraction for coaches this hiring cycle, and the reason for that starts at the top with Baalke.

Jaguars fans are feeling frustrated and disappointed after yet another head coaching candidate has rejected the team’s offer. Trent Baalke, the Jaguars’ general manager, is facing backlash from fans who are questioning his ability to attract top coaching talent.

The latest rejection came from Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell, who reportedly turned down the Jaguars’ offer to become their next head coach. This comes after the team was also rejected by San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, who ultimately accepted the head coaching position with the New York Jets.

Fans took to social media to voice their frustration, with many criticizing Baalke for his handling of the coaching search. Some fans even went as far as to call for Baalke to be fired, citing his track record of poor decision-making and inability to attract top coaching talent.

Despite the setbacks, the Jaguars are still in search of their next head coach and are reportedly considering other candidates. However, fans are understandably skeptical and are hoping for a change in leadership that will bring success to the struggling franchise.

  • ‘I’m not going to be a part of them trying to rewrite history’: Idaho woman who took part in Jan. 6 Capitol riots, rejects presidential pardon

Pam Hemphill denies being a victim and does not want to be included in the presidential pardon.

IDAHO, USA — The day before she drove herself to California, to begin her federal prison sentence, Pam Hemphill admitted she believed the big lie.

“I did. I went along with everything I’m hearing,” Hemphill said. “Yeah, I paid a big price for this.”

Hemphill spent two months in the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, California, for taking part in the Capitol riots on Jan. 6, 2021.

The 71 year-old said she was able to lower her sentence because she agreed to a plea deal. She signed off on one misdemeanor count of demonstrating, parading, or picketing inside the U.S. Capitol building.

Hemphill was a “J-Sixer,” a core believer that Joe Biden stole the 2020 Presidential Election. Which is why she was part of the hundred who stormed the U.S. Capitol Building. According to prosecutors, she “repeatedly turned to police for help while simultaneously undermining their efforts.”

In May of 2022, she was sentenced to 60 days in prison, three years probation, and a $500 fine.

That summer Hemphill became known as the “MAGA Granny.” In many people’s eyes, she was simply a cancer patient who was wrongfully incarcerated in a California women’s prison and housed with cartel members and convicted murderers.

However, that’s not the story Hemphill wants attached to her.

She denied her victimhood when KTVB spoke with her nearly two years ago. She has denied it in countless national and international interviews since, and she denies it today. While she was included in the 1,500 plus Jan. 6 pardons issued by President Trump on Monday, Hemphill does not want to be.

She describes her time in prison as a nightmare.

“I’m claustrophobic. Thank God the doors aren’t locked, but you can’t go out,” she said. “You just learn to do it five minutes at a time, ten minutes at a time. You focus on watching TV all day. That’s all I did.”

At the time, Hemphill admitted had her guilt and resigned herself to her punishment.

“I broke the law. It’s just that simple,” she said. “I had a choice. I’m not a victim; I could have left. ‘No,’ I thought, ‘I’m going to stay there and videotape.’”

Federal Prosecutors said Hemphill did much more than videotape.

With her phone camera recording for most of the morning and into the afternoon that day, she followed the crowd from the Trump rally in Ellipse Park to the Capitol. She believed they were going to be allowed through the barricades.

Hemphill, who was recovering from a recent surgery, says she struggled to keep up with the crowd and she was getting forced against the fence.

“An officer pulls me over, and I thought, ‘Ok, he’s letting me in first.’ So, I go around, and oh my gosh, this is the worst part,” she remembers. “I was saying (to the others still outside the fence), ‘Come on, what are you doing? It’s our house,” she said. “What are you doing? Just get in here. It’s your house.”

She says she was directed back outside the barrier. But the crowd did not take long to follow her suggestion. Hemphill said she was swept along by the crowd who broke through the fence and the officers and made their way to the Capitol Building.

“When I got to the steps, they knocked me down, stepped on my head, pulled out my shoulder, broke my glasses, I was not breathing,” Hemphill said. “If it wasn’t for the Capitol Police Officers, I wouldn’t be here ’cause I couldn’t breathe. They pulled me up and put me behind them.”

The turning point for Hemphill came weeks later, as she learned how much of the “Stop the Steal” movement was based on lies.

“They’re lying about everything. (They) said the doors were opened by the officers, and they were not,” she said. “Everything starts with Trump saying the election was stolen. That’s where it all started. It wasn’t stolen.”

On Monday, she learned she had been issued a pardon.

“I’m not going to take it. I gotta do some research on who to contact to refuse it,” she said. “If I took a pardon, then what I did that day was ok. It wasn’t.

“I’m not going to be a part of them trying to rewrite history,” she added. “That what they did that day was ok. I broke the law, I pay the price.”

Since before and after her time in prison Hemphill has spoken out about her mistakes on January 6.

“It’s my amends for every being there that day,” she said. “The least I could do compared to what the Capitol Police Officers went through that day. Oh my god. They still haven’t put up that plaque for them.”

She would like to see that plaque put up. She said she hopes to meet them, hug them, and apologize.

“I’m so sorry I was ever there that day, that I was a part of that garbage,” Hemphill said. “I’ve gotta live the rest of my life knowing I was there, a part of it, you know, cheering it on. That’s why I gotta speak out, be vulnerable. Death threats, whatever, I have to feel that I’ve done the best that I can to let others know that whatever happened that day was wrong.”

She said that now she knows it was an insurrection and called the rioters criminals, and she is hoping that her voice will make a difference.

“It’s the right thing to do to let people know that I was wrong that day and we all were wrong that day,” Hemphill said.

Hemphill says she is currently cancer-free and plans to complete the eight months she has left of her probation.

She does worry these pardons will open the door to a new definition of “a peaceful protest.”

Since her release from prison in September of 2022, Hemphill has been very vocal about distancing herself from the tragic events of January 6 and criticizing other “J-Sixers” for not doing the same.

She admits that has garnered her a great deal of harassment and even death threats. She says has lost friends, family members and MAGA faithful over her stance.

But she’s not worried about those things and it’s not going to stop her from speaking out.

On January 6, 2021, the world watched in horror as a violent mob stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Among those who took part in the insurrection was an Idaho woman who has since rejected a presidential pardon.

In a statement released to the media, the woman, who has chosen to remain anonymous, declared, “I will not be a part of them trying to rewrite history. I made a mistake that day, and I take full responsibility for my actions. I do not deserve a pardon for what I did.”

The woman went on to express regret for her role in the riots and urged others who participated to do the same. She emphasized the importance of accountability and reconciliation in order to heal the deep divisions that have torn the country apart.

As the nation continues to grapple with the aftermath of the Capitol riots, this woman’s refusal to accept a pardon serves as a powerful reminder of the need for individuals to take responsibility for their actions and work towards building a more just and inclusive society.
