  • Pentagon intelligence agency pauses events, activities related to MLK Day, Black History Month

In response to President Donald Trump’s executive order banning diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, the Pentagon’s intelligence agency has paused special event programs and related events, including for Juneteenth, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Black History Month, Holocaust Days of Remembrance and Pride Month, according to a memo obtained by ABC News.

Despite being on the list of the Defense Intelligence Agency’s paused events and activities, the memo clarified that Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth will remain federal holidays.

“The Defense Intelligence Agency is working with the Department of Defense to fully implement all Executive Orders and Administration guidance in a timely manner,” Lt. Cmdr. Seth Clarke, DIA spokesman, told ABC News in a statement when asked about the memo. “As we receive additional guidance, we will continue to update our internal guidance.”

A copy of the memo began circulating on social media Wednesday morning.

The affected events, per the memo, which is dated Jan. 28, 2025, include: Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Holocaust Day and Days of Remembrance, Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Pride, Juneteenth, Women’s Equality Day, National Hispanic Heritage Month, National Disability Employment Awareness Month and National American Indian Heritage Month.

The pause comes as Black History Month is set to begin on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Trump has targeted DEI initiatives in a series of executive orders in his first week in office, with the White House saying that “DEI creates and then amplifies prejudicial hostility and exacerbates interpersonal conflict.”

The memo also noted that the DIA would “pause Agency Resource Groups, Affinity Groups, and Employee Networking Groups, effective immediately and until further notice.”

The Pentagon intelligence agency has decided to pause all events and activities related to Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Black History Month. This decision comes as a response to the recent events surrounding the insurrection at the Capitol and the ongoing concerns about security.

The agency stated that they want to take the time to reflect on the significance of these important holidays and to ensure that they are celebrated in a safe and respectful manner. They also mentioned that they are committed to promoting diversity and inclusion within their organization.

While this pause may disappoint some individuals who were looking forward to participating in these events, the agency emphasized that the safety and well-being of their employees and the community are their top priorities.

Stay tuned for updates on when these events and activities will resume. In the meantime, let us all take this time to reflect on the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and the contributions of Black Americans to our history and society.

  • General Motors swings to fourth quarter loss on charges related to China, but tops expectations

General Motors swung to a loss in the fourth quarter on huge charges related to China, but still topped profit and revenue expectations on Wall Street. The automaker is also taking a proactive approach with the United States government on regulations and doling out generous profit-sharing payouts to thousands of workers.

Last month GM cautioned that the poor performance of its Chinese joint ventures would force it to write down assets and take a restructuring charge totaling more than $5 billion in the fourth quarter.

China has become an increasingly difficult market for foreign automakers, with BYD and other domestic companies raising the quality of their vehicles and reducing costs. The country has subsidized its automakers.

For the three months ended Dec. 31, GM lost $2.96 billion, or $1.64 per share. A year earlier the company earned $2.1 billion, or $1.59 per share.

Stripping out the charges and other items, GM earned $1.92 per share in the quarter. That topped the $1.85 per share that analysts surveyed by FactSet predicted.

Revenue climbed to $47.7 billion from $42.98 billion, beating Wall Street’s estimate of $44.98 billion.

In a letter to shareholders, CEO Mary Barra said that GM doubled its electric vehicle market share over the course of 2024 as it scaled production. She noted that China had positive equity income in the fourth quarter before restructuring costs and that GM is taking steps with its partner to improve from there.

In the U.S., Barra said that hourly employees once again earned the industry’s highest profit sharing, totaling more than $640 million. Workers will receive a payout of up to $14,500 per person, which Barra said is equal to more than two months of extra pay on average for its United Auto Workers-represented employees.

Barra said that while there’s uncertainty over trade, tax, and environmental regulations in the United States, GM has been proactive with Congress and the administration of President Donald Trump.

“In our conversations, we have stressed the importance of a strong manufacturing sector and American leadership in advanced technologies,” she said. “It’s clear that we share a lot of common ground, and we appreciate the dialogue.”

Wedbush’s Dan Ives said in a note to clients that GM delivered a strong end to 2024 and is continuing to see major benefits from its investments.

“We believe this was another major step in the right direction as management continues to navigate the choppy waters in this EV macro while the turnaround story for GM continues with management successfully balancing production and profitability to generate durable profitable growth over the coming years,” Ives wrote.

This year, GM will offer three new Cadillac EVs, the Escalade IQ, Optiq and Vistiq. Barra said that the automaker will also see the full-year impact of new gas-powered SUVs launched in 2024, which includes the Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia.

Barra noted that regardless of what happens in the U.S., GM has “a broad and deep portfolio of ICE vehicles and EVs that are both growing market share, and we’ll be agile and execute as efficiently as possible.”

Looking ahead, GM anticipates 2025 adjusted earnings in a range of $11 to $12 per share. Analysts surveyed by FactSet are calling for full-year earnings of $10.86 per share.

General Motors reported a fourth quarter loss due to charges related to its operations in China, but still managed to surpass expectations. The company announced a loss of $194 million, or 9 cents per share, compared to a profit of $2.2 billion, or $1.40 per share, in the same period last year.

The loss was primarily attributed to a $1.3 billion charge related to the company’s restructuring efforts in China, where sales have been declining. However, excluding one-time items, GM reported adjusted earnings of $1.93 per share, beating analysts’ expectations of $1.41 per share.

Despite the challenges in the Chinese market, GM’s North American operations performed well, with strong sales of trucks and SUVs. The company’s CEO, Mary Barra, expressed confidence in the company’s ability to navigate the changing global landscape and continue to deliver strong results.

Investors seemed to agree, as GM’s stock price rose after the earnings report was released. The company’s focus on electric and autonomous vehicles, as well as ongoing cost-cutting efforts, are seen as key drivers of future growth.

Overall, while the fourth quarter loss may have been disappointing, GM’s ability to exceed expectations and demonstrate resilience in the face of challenges bodes well for its future prospects.

  • Cori Clingman faces 13 charges related to Khyree Jackson’s death

A driver involved in the crash that killed Minnesota Vikings rookie Khyree Jackson and two others was arrested Thursday and charged with 13 counts, including DUI and criminally negligent vehicular manslaughter, the Prince George’s County (Maryland) state attorney said.

Cori Clingman, who was 23 at the time of the accident, remained in custody as of Thursday evening and will have a bond hearing scheduled soon, attorney Aisha Braveboy said.

“This was a horrific tragedy that should not have occurred,” Braveboy said. “This really just starts our fight to get justice.”

The three-car crash occurred at 3:14 a.m. on July 6, 2024. Isaiah Hazel and Anthony Lytton Jr., two high school football teammates of Jackson’s, were also killed.

Hazel, 23, played at Maryland and Charlotte. Lytton, 24, played at Florida State and Penn State.

Maryland State Police said last summer that Hazel was driving a Dodge Charger with Jackson in the passenger seat when their car was struck by an Infiniti Q50 driven by Clingman, who was attempting to change lanes at a high speed. Clingman’s car also struck a Chevrolet Impala. The Charger left the road and struck multiple tree stumps. According to police, Jackson and Hazel were pronounced dead at the scene, while Lytton was transported to a hospital before being pronounced dead by hospital personnel.

Clingman, the two passengers in her car and the driver of the Impala were uninjured.

Braveboy said Thursday that she could not add many details because the investigation is “ongoing.” She did not reveal Clingman’s exact blood alcohol content but confirmed it was “at least” above the legal limit of 0.08% in Maryland.

Jackson, who was one month away from his 25th birthday at the time of his death, was the Vikings’ fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft. He attended spring OTAs and minicamp and endeared himself to a veteran team with his enthusiasm and confidence.

The Vikings donated $20,000 toward expenses for Jackson’s funeral and also paid out his $827,148 signing bonus to his estate.

A contingent of players and staff members attended his funeral, during which coach Kevin O’Connell was one of the featured speakers. Players wore a “KJ” sticker on the back of their helmets throughout season, while coaches and staff members wore pins with the same initials.

“You felt [Jackson] had such a laser focus on what his mission and what his plan was,” O’Connell said during training camp. “It really showed up in the spring. He had a very, very good spring and was really looking forward to coming back to training camp and being well on his way [and] on that path to having a big impact on our team for this year. Just some of my personal dialogue with him and the work he was putting in throughout the summer, you just knew he was going to come back and do that.”

In an ESPN feature story that aired earlier this month, O’Connell said he “fell in love” with Jackson during his brief time with the team this spring and that players and coaches rallied around his memory.

“We’re all grieving and we all grieve in our own ways,” O’Connell said. “But there’s not thing more powerful than grieving together, and we’re going to do it in the way that best honors Khyree and his family.”

Cori Clingman, a 27-year-old woman from Detroit, is facing 13 charges in connection to the death of 9-year-old Khyree Jackson. Jackson was found dead in his home on February 15th, and an investigation revealed that he had been severely abused and neglected.

Clingman, who was dating Jackson’s father at the time of the boy’s death, has been charged with multiple counts of child abuse, torture, and murder. Authorities believe that she played a significant role in the abuse and neglect that ultimately led to Jackson’s tragic death.

The community has been shocked and outraged by the details of this case, and many are calling for justice to be served for young Khyree Jackson. As the legal proceedings move forward, we can only hope that those responsible for his death are held accountable for their actions. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Khyree Jackson during this difficult time.

  • Researchers identify 36 genes related to the onset and development of bipolar disorder

The study was led by the Bipolar Disorder Working Group at the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium, an international group made up of more than 800 researchers from 40 countries in which professionals from IDIBAPS-Hospital Clínic and Hospital Vall d’Hebron participate, all of them researchers from CIBER de Salud Mental (CIBERSAM).

A disorder with a high genetic component

Bipolar disorder is a chronic mental disorder that affects between 40 and 50 million people worldwide and is characterised by the alternation of depressive episodes and episodes of mania or hypomania (euphoric or irritable moods). It can have a profound impact on daily life if not treated properly and poses a significant public health problem.

It has a substantial genetic basis, with an estimated heritability of between 60% and 80%. However, identifying the specific genes involved in this disorder has been a great challenge due to its complexity, as it combines genetic and environmental factors.

    Genetic characterisation of bipolar disorder

The international group conducted a meta-analysis of several genome-wide association studies, combining their results to more accurately identify the genetic variants associated with a disease or a trait. In total, more than 158,000 patients with bipolar disorder and 2.8 million people without the disorder were included and the genes of the two groups were compared to decipher the existing differences. The most important feature is that people from all six inhabitable continents were included for the first time.

The study identified 337 variants of genome-wide significance (GWS) that are mutually independent and grouped into 298 specific regions of the genome (loci). This identification is four times larger than that of any previous study. These genetic variants are related to the causes of the disorder, as well as to brain plasticity and signal transmission.

By combining the results of advanced genetic mapping techniques, like fine-mapping and other strategies to link genetic variants with specific genes, the researchers identified 36 reliable genes related to the causes or development of bipolar disorder.

The researchers also found genetic differences, depending on the patients’ subtype of bipolar disorder. For instance, they found a greater genetic relationship with schizophrenia in the cohorts with a large proportion of patients with type 1 bipolar disorder. In the cohort with more cases of patients with type 2 bipolar disorder, they detected a greater genetic correlation with major depressive disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

‘With this study, we have taken a big step forward to better understand how this disorder functions and what causes it. Given a little more time, we also hope to develop new and better treatments for it’, says Dr Eduard Vieta, the head of Hospital Clínic’s Psychiatry Service and of the IDIBAPS research group Bipolar and depressive disorders.

    Study reference:

Characterising the genetic landscape of bipolar disorder yields novel biological insights. Nature. DOI: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-024-08468-9

Researchers have recently made a breakthrough in understanding bipolar disorder by identifying 36 genes that are related to the onset and development of the disorder. This discovery sheds light on the complex genetic factors that contribute to bipolar disorder and may lead to new avenues for treatment and management.

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings, ranging from manic episodes of high energy and euphoria to depressive episodes of sadness and hopelessness. It affects millions of people worldwide and can have a significant impact on daily functioning and quality of life.

By pinpointing these 36 genes, researchers have taken a crucial step towards unraveling the genetic basis of bipolar disorder. Understanding the role of these genes in the development of the disorder could help identify individuals at risk, improve early detection, and ultimately lead to more targeted and effective treatments.

This groundbreaking research opens up new possibilities for personalized medicine and precision psychiatry in the treatment of bipolar disorder. As scientists continue to delve deeper into the genetic underpinnings of mental health conditions, we are one step closer to developing more tailored and effective interventions for those living with bipolar disorder.

  • Ripple Related Token Rockets 11% as Bitcoin Bulls Target $185,000

Ripple Related Token Rockets 11% as Bitcoin Bulls Target $185,000

Crypto majors zoomed higher in the past 24 hours as the market entered a widely expected bullish year, with bitcoin (BTC) inching above $95,000 to shake off losses from last week.

A CoinDesk analysis from Tuesday flagged unusually high trading volumes for XRP stemming from South Korean exchanges, which has historically acted as a harbinger for price volatility with a bias to the upside.

XRP surged 11% to lead growth among majors as of Thursday, led by $1.3 billion worth of trading volumes on Korea-focused exchange UpBit.

Among other majors, Cardano’s ADA, Solana’s SOL and Chainlink’s LINK added as much as 8%. Ether (ETH) and BNB Chain’s BNB rose 3%, while memecoins dogecoin (DOGE) and shiba inu (SHIB) added 5%.

The broad-based CoinDesk 20 (CD20), a liquid index tracking the largest tokens by market capitalization, minus stablecoins, rose 5.8%.

The anticipation of a more crypto-friendly administration under incoming U.S. president Donald Trump, who has made campaign promises for crypto friendly policies and a strategic bitcoin reserve, is largely fuelling optimism for 2025.

The Bitcoin halving event in 2024 historically led to a bullish trend in the following year due to the reduced supply of new tokens entering the market. The broader crypto market also tends to follow a four-year cycle influenced by the halvings — with memecoins, AI and real-world assets expected to be market leaders.

Predictions aren’t limited to mere cycles, however. Firms such as Galaxy Research predict large-scale institutional, corporate, and nation-state adoption in bitcoin investments, with at least five Nasdaq-100 companies and five nation-states expected to adopt the asset.

The firm targets a $185,000 level for bitcoin and $5,500 for ether (ETH) this year.

Singapore-based QCP Capital mirrors that sentiment: “For 2025, while optimism surrounds crypto-friendly regulations post-Trump inauguration, we think the key catalyst may come in January as institutions readjust asset allocations.”

“With BTC now broadly adopted by a broad spectrum of institutions, allocations are likely to increase, strengthening Bitcoin dominance, stabilizing spot movements, and shifting volatility dynamics closer to equities,” the firm said in a Telegram broadcast on Tuesday. “Expect stronger demand for downside puts for hedging and more covered call selling on the topside.”

Some say bitcoin becoming a mainstream asset may further reduce its infamous volatility, leading to even more adoption among institutional firms.

“Mainstream’s effect on crypto is most evident through BTC’s high correlation to the SPX, remaining the most correlated asset as we end 2024,” Augustine Fan, head of insights at SOFA, told CoinDesk in a Telegram message. “Another sign of BTC heading towards being a mainstream asset class is its declining realized volatility, which would eventually add more diversification benefits and alpha to the traditional 60/40 portfolio.”

“Volatility should continue to decline as an asset class matures, as our long-standing view is that crypto would be no different,” Fan added.

The cryptocurrency market is heating up once again as Ripple related token experiences a massive 11% surge in price. With Bitcoin bulls setting their sights on a target of $185,000, all eyes are on the digital asset space.

Investors are closely monitoring the movement of Ripple related token, which has seen a significant uptick in value in recent days. This surge is fueling excitement among traders and analysts, who are predicting further gains in the near future.

Bitcoin, the leading cryptocurrency, is also on a tear as bulls push the price towards the $185,000 mark. This has sparked renewed optimism among crypto enthusiasts, many of whom believe that the digital asset is well on its way to hitting new all-time highs.

As the market continues to rally, it’s clear that cryptocurrencies are once again capturing the attention of investors worldwide. With Ripple related token leading the charge with an impressive 11% gain, all signs point to a bullish trend in the digital asset space. Stay tuned for more updates as the market continues to unfold.

(NASDAQ: ENTA), a clinical-stage biotechnology company dedicated to creating small molecule drugs for virology and immunology indications, today announced that the United States District Court of Massachusetts (“the Court”) has issued a ruling on a summary judgment motion filed by Pfizer, Inc. in connection with Enanta’s patent infringement lawsuit seeking damages for infringement of U.S. Patent No. 11,358,953 (“the ’953 Patent”) in the manufacture, use and sale of Pfizer’s COVID-19 antiviral, Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir tablets; ritonavir tablets).

The Court issued a summary judgment decision granting Pfizer’s motion that the ‘953 Patent is invalid. In its decision, the Court also denied Enanta’s partial motion for summary judgment of infringement as moot in light of its allowance of summary judgment on invalidity. Enanta plans to appeal the decision to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

“The U.S. patent system and its protection of important innovations have enabled the robust development of new medicines and spurred growth in the biotechnology industry. We are proud of the impact our strong history of drug discovery work with protease inhibitors has had on antiviral treatments and the thousands of patients that have been treated with therapies using our patented inventions,” said Jay R. Luly, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Enanta Pharmaceuticals, Inc. “We are disappointed with the Court’s ruling. We believe strongly in the merits of our case, and, through the appeal process, we will continue to defend our inventions from unlawful infringement.”

Enanta maintains its commitment to avoid attempting to impede the production, sale or distribution of Paxlovid.

Intelligent Transportation Related Complex Systems and Sensors

Transportation is a vital component of everyday life, and with the advancement of technology, intelligent transportation systems (ITS) have become increasingly important in improving the efficiency and safety of our transportation networks. These systems rely on a variety of complex systems and sensors to gather data, analyze it, and make informed decisions to optimize traffic flow and reduce congestion.

One of the key components of ITS is sensors, which are used to collect data on traffic conditions, weather, road conditions, and vehicle movements. These sensors can be installed on roads, traffic lights, and vehicles to provide real-time information to transportation management systems. For example, cameras can be used to monitor traffic flow, while weather sensors can provide information on road conditions to help drivers plan their routes accordingly.

Complex systems are also integral to ITS, as they are responsible for processing the vast amount of data collected by sensors and making decisions to optimize traffic flow. These systems use algorithms and artificial intelligence to analyze data and predict traffic patterns, enabling them to adjust traffic signals, reroute traffic, and provide real-time information to drivers.

Overall, intelligent transportation systems rely on a combination of complex systems and sensors to improve the efficiency and safety of our transportation networks. By leveraging technology and data, we can create smarter, more connected transportation systems that benefit both drivers and the environment.
