  • ‘Hungry’ St. John’s tops Marquette to remain atop Big East

NEW YORK — An aggressive, hounding defense. Bully ball on the offensive end. A Hall of Fame coach walking the sideline. Chants of “Let’s go, Johnnies!” filling Madison Square Garden in the final minute of No. 12 St. John’s 70-64 win over No. 11 Marquette.

For a basketball program desperate to return to relevance — and win its first Big East regular-season championship since 1992 — it was hard to escape the feeling that Tuesday night was a turning point.

There have been false dawns for St. John’s basketball before, but this season’s Red Storm have won nine games in a row and 15 of their past 16, and they sit atop the Big East standings at 11-1.

And now they have the statement win they’ve been looking for all season.

“You guys can see it now,” St. John’s forward RJ Luis Jr. said. “We’re a very hungry group, and we’re very determined to win. We came out tonight, came out fighting, and was able to get the tough win versus a very good Marquette team.”

It was just about one year ago when coach Rick Pitino walked into the news conference following St. John’s eighth loss in 10 games, a 68-62 defeat to Seton Hall after leading by 19 points, and lamented his team’s lack of toughness and athleticism.

“If I said I was disappointed, that would be the understatement of the year,” he said last February. “Our lateral quickness and our toughness is just something I’ve never witnessed in all my years of coaching.”

Twelve months and a revamped roster later, and St. John’s has one of the elite defenses in college basketball, ranking in the top five nationally in adjusted efficiency per KenPom. The team’s effort at that end of the floor has been at the heart of its success, and that was again the case Tuesday.

Despite not shooting well from the 3-point line (3-for-16) or the free throw line (17-for-31), St. John’s held Marquette to 0.95 points per possession — the Golden Eagles’ second-worst offensive performance of the campaign.

There was no possession more evident of the Red Storm’s commitment on defense than after St. John’s took a 66-59 lead in the final two minutes. Marquette needed to come down and score quickly to cut the lead, but the Golden Eagles simply couldn’t get a look at the basket. They dribbled around for 25 seconds before Kadary Richmond blocked a 3-point attempt into the stands with 1:11 remaining.

“I thought all the guys played great defense,” Pitino said. “They help each other, they switch. This is a relentless defensive team, and you see it all the time. … This is a relentless group. A relentless group that’s totally bought into stopping every play.”

St. John’s withstood early shooting woes by attacking the offensive glass. At one point late in the first half, Marquette had made five 3s to the Red Storm’s 0. But St. John’s countered that by grabbing 11 offensive rebounds to Marquette’s 0, resulting in seven second-chance points.

“I thought they played with incredible violence,” Marquette coach Shaka Smart said. “They were just the more aggressive team for the majority of the game.”

Stingy defense and offensive rebounding have been part of the Red Storm’s identity all season, but lately the reemergence of Richmond has given them an added dimension on offense.

Richmond, the No. 1 player in the transfer portal last spring after leaving Seton Hall, hadn’t quite reached the same heights at St. John’s through the first 2½ months of the season. But he had 24 points — including the game winner — 8 rebounds and 8 assists against Providence on Saturday, and he finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists on Tuesday.

“He’s a humble superstar. And I’ll tell you, in this day and age, you don’t get Kadary Richmonds anymore,” Pitino said. “Kadary has been a joy to coach. A humble, hard-working guy who’s getting better at his age, he’s like a fine wine. He’s just getting better and he’s just a great teammate. He doesn’t look for credit, he doesn’t look for praise. He makes a mistake, he goes, ‘It’s on me.’ I wish they would all act like that, but he’s a pro. He’s a professional. He acts that way. So, I’m very lucky to have him.”

As the final seconds ticked off the clock, “We want UConn!” chants rang out from certain corners of the Garden. St. John’s heads to Storrs to face UConn on Friday night, another game for the Red Storm to lay down a marker in their quest for a conference title.

But Pitino wasn’t interested in giving the Huskies any bulletin board material. When asked after the game for his thoughts on the chants about the two-time reigning national champions, the coach was succinct:

    “I think they’re drunk.”

In a thrilling matchup, St. John’s University emerged victorious over Marquette to maintain their position at the top of the Big East standings. The game was a nail-biter from start to finish, with both teams trading baskets and playing tough defense.

Despite a valiant effort from Marquette, St. John’s was able to pull away in the final minutes thanks to some clutch shooting and strong performances from their star players. The win solidifies St. John’s as a force to be reckoned with in the Big East, as they continue their quest for a conference championship.

Fans of St. John’s can celebrate this hard-fought victory and look forward to more exciting games ahead. With their hunger for success and determination to win, St. John’s is proving to be a team to watch in the Big East.

  • Auburn, Duke remain 1-2 atop latest AP Top 25 men’s poll

Auburn and Duke remain 1-2 atop The Associated Press Top 25 men’s college basketball poll for the third straight week, while Maryland is back in the rankings for the first time in nearly two years.

Bruce Pearl’s Tigers (20-1) held the No. 1 ranking for the fourth consecutive week in Monday’s poll and the third in a row as the unanimous choice. Auburn has claimed 246 of 248 first-place votes over the past month while remaining unbeaten in a rugged Southeastern Conference with nine ranked teams.

Auburn’s only loss came to Jon Scheyer’s Blue Devils (19-2), who enter the week with the nation’s longest winning streak at 15 games after rolling past rival North Carolina.

The two teams offered the only stability after 15 teams in last week’s AP Top 25 lost last week, with three of those losing twice.

    The top tier

Alabama moved up a spot to No. 3, followed by Tennessee jumping four spots to No. 4 in an SEC-heavy top tier. Houston climbed one spot to No. 5 despite an overtime loss to now-No. 13 Texas Tech to end a 33-game home winning streak.

Florida was next at No. 6, followed by Purdue, Iowa State, Michigan State and Texas A&M to round out the top 10.

    Rising

Texas Tech (17-4) had the biggest jump among last week’s ranked teams, rising nine spots to 13th after beating TCU at home and then beating the Cougars despite coach Grant McCasland and forward JT Toppin being ejected early.

Two-time reigning national champion UConn climbed six spots to No. 19 after winning at Marquette, while Missouri jumped five spots to No. 15 after beating Mississippi State.

In all, 10 teams moved up from their positions last week. That included Rick Pitino’s St. John’s team rising three spots to No. 12, the highest ranking for the program since finishing the 1999-2000 season at No. 9.

    Sliding

Mississippi State had the week’s biggest tumble, falling eight spots to No. 22 after home losses to Alabama and Missouri. Iowa State joined the Bulldogs in a two-loss week, falling five spots after losses to Arizona and Kansas State.

No. 16 Kansas and No. 23 Illinois also fell five spots, pushing the list of sliding teams to 10.

    Welcome

No. 18 Maryland, No. 20 Arizona and No. 24 Michigan were the week’s three new additions.

Kevin Willard’s Terrapins (17-5) jumped into the poll at No. 18 after pushing its winning streak to four games, a stretch that includes winning at then-No. 17 Illinois and beating then-No. 17 Wisconsin at home last week.

That gave Maryland its first poll ranking in nearly two years, the last coming with a week at No. 21 in late February 2023.

Arizona (15-6) returned to the poll for the first time since November. The Wildcats opened the year at No. 10 and peaked at ninth, but they’re back in after winning 11 of 12 — including against Iowa State after Caleb Love hit a halfcourt shot to force overtime.

Michigan (16-5) has two previous stints in the poll this season, peaking at No. 14 in early December.

    Farewell (for now)

Oregon was one of the three departures from this week’s poll, falling out from No. 16 after being one of the trio to lose twice last week by falling at UCLA and at home to Nebraska. Louisville (No. 21) and Vanderbilt (No. 24) also fell out after losses to unranked foes.

    Conference watch

The SEC had at least nine teams in the poll for the seventh straight week, including three weeks with 10 teams to make up 40% of the poll. The SEC has also had at least half of the top 10 eight times in nine weeks, peaking at six teams on Jan. 6. No other league has had more than six ranked teams in any week this season.

Maryland’s arrival pushed the Big Ten to six ranked teams, followed by the Big 12 with five and the Big East with three. The Atlantic Coast and American Athletic conferences each had one.

Auburn and Duke continue to dominate the college basketball scene as they hold onto the top two spots in the latest AP Top 25 men’s poll. The Tigers and Blue Devils have been consistently impressive throughout the season, and their strong performances have solidified their positions at the top of the rankings.

Auburn, led by standout players like Jabari Smith Jr. and Walker Kessler, has been on a tear with an impressive record and key victories over top teams. The Tigers have shown their ability to compete with the best and are poised to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.

Duke, with a talented roster featuring Paolo Banchero and Wendell Moore Jr., has also been a force to be reckoned with. The Blue Devils have been dominant in conference play and have proven themselves as a legitimate title contender.

As the regular season winds down and March Madness approaches, all eyes will be on Auburn and Duke as they look to maintain their positions at the top of the rankings and make a run for the national championship. Stay tuned for more exciting basketball action from these powerhouse teams.

  • Shivam Dube returns after concussion, Out-of-form Samson to remain in lineup: India’s likely XI vs England for 5th T20I

After securing a series-clinching victory on Friday, India take on England in the fifth T20I on Sunday, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The fourth T20I also saw controversy as Harshit Rana was allowed to be Shivam Dube’s concussion substitute and removed Liam Livingstone off his second delivery. Dube has cleared the concussion protocol tests and is allowed to be included in the playing XI. Members from the England camp feel that Rana coming in for Dube wasn’t a like-for-like substitution and was unfair.

India’s Shivam Dube (R) celebrates with his teammate Axar Patel after scoring a half-century (50 runs) during the fourth T20I.(AFP)

The fourth T20I saw Hardik Pandya (53) and Shivam Dube’s (53) half-centuries take India to 181/9 in 20 overs. Meanwhile, Saquib Mahmood struck thrice for the visitors and Jamie Overton took two wickets. Chasing 182 runs, England were bowled out for 166 in 19.4 overs, despite a half-century from Harry Brook (51). Meanwhile for India’s bowling department, Ravi Bishnoi and Rana bagged three dismissals each respectively.

In the fifth T20I, Sanju Samson is once again expected to open with Abhishek Sharma. Samson is in poor batting form and could only muster one run off three balls in the previous fixture. Unlike his opening partner, Abhishek has been in good form and is the highest run-scorer in the ongoing series, with 144 runs at a strike rate of 197.26, and has also clobbered 17 fours and nine sixes.

In the fourth fixture, Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav were dismissed for ducks. Tilak departed in the first ball and skipper Suryakumar faced only four deliveries. They are expected to keep their place, and will bat at no. 3 and no. 4 in the order.

Rinku Singh got a gritty 26-ball 30-run knock in the previous fixture, and also hammered four fours and a maximum. He is expected to retain his place and will bat at no. 5, followed by Dube and Pandya, who were crucial in the previous fixture. Dube was also adjudged as Player of the Match for his quickfire half-century (53 off 34 deliveries).

Axar Patel will be the last batting all-rounder in the batting order, coming after Hardik. He was dismissed for five runs off four balls. Meanwhile, the tailenders will consist of Arshdeep Singh, Ravi Bishnoi, Varun Chakaravarthy.

    India’s likely XI vs England-

Openers: Sanju Samson (WK), Abhishek Sharma

Middle order: Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (C), Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube

    All-rounders: Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel

Bowlers: Arshdeep Singh, Ravi Bishnoi, Varun Chakaravarthy

After missing the last few matches due to a concussion, all-rounder Shivam Dube is set to make his return to the Indian lineup for the fifth T20I against England. Dube’s presence will provide a much-needed boost to the team, especially in the absence of Hardik Pandya who is still recovering from a shoulder injury.

On the other hand, wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson, who has been struggling for form in the series so far, is likely to retain his place in the playing XI. Despite not making significant contributions with the bat, the team management seems to have faith in Samson’s abilities and will give him another opportunity to prove himself.

Here is India’s likely XI for the fifth T20I against England:

    1. Rohit Sharma
    2. KL Rahul (wk)
    3. Virat Kohli (c)
    4. Suryakumar Yadav
    5. Rishabh Pant
    6. Hardik Pandya
    7. Shivam Dube
    8. Washington Sundar
    9. Shardul Thakur
    10. Bhuvneshwar Kumar
    11. Yuzvendra Chahal

With the series currently tied at 2-2, both teams will be looking to put their best foot forward in the final match to clinch the series. It will be interesting to see how the inclusion of Shivam Dube and the persistence with Sanju Samson will impact India’s performance in the crucial encounter.

  • Nottingham Forest remain without Callum Hudson-Odoi, Ibrahim Sangare set for to return

Nottingham Forest will continue to be without Callum Hudson-Odoi when they face Brighton & Hove Albion at the City Ground on Saturday.

Nuno Espirito Santo says that long-term absentee Ibrahim Sangare, meanwhile, will be available for the game.

Winger Hudson-Odoi has failed to overcome a groin problem sustained in the 3-2 win over Southampton, which ensured he was sidelined for last weekend’s defeat at Bournemouth.

Forest will continue to monitor his injury in the hope that he will recover for either the trip to Exeter City in the FA Cup next Tuesday or, more likely, the Premier League game at Fulham beyond that.

“Callum is out. He is not going to be involved in the game. It is a big absence for us,” said Nuno in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Brighton game. “We are still assessing. It is something we hope to improve soon but he is not going to be available for this game.”

Sangare is in contention to return for Forest (Mike Egerton/PA Images via Getty Images)

Jota was handed a rare start at Bournemouth in Hudson-Odoi’s absence at Bournemouth, with Anthony Elanga shifted over to the left side, instead of his normal role on the right.

But while Nuno will again have to find a solution without Hudson-Odoi, he will have more options in midfield, with Sangare (hamstring) and Danilo (broken leg) both having been fully rehabilitated and now considered ready to start, if called upon.

Sangare has trained with the squad for the last two weeks without issue having been out since September, while Danilo has already made his first team return as a substitute in the FA Cup against Luton recently.

“Ibrahim and Danilo are ready; they joined the squad,” said Nuno, who is hoping for an improvement following the 5-0 defeat on the south coast.

“We have to perform much better. We have to be more solid and play better football. We were not accurate and missed a lot of passes last weekend. We have so many things to improve. We have a big challenge ahead of us because Brighton are a very good team.”

Nottingham Forest fans will have to wait a little longer to see Callum Hudson-Odoi in action, as the Chelsea loanee continues to recover from injury. However, there is good news on the horizon as midfielder Ibrahim Sangare is set to make his return to the squad.

Hudson-Odoi, who joined Forest on loan in the January transfer window, has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since his arrival at the club. The talented winger is making progress in his recovery, but is still not ready to make his debut for the Reds.

On the other hand, Sangare is set to return to action after missing the last few games due to a minor knock. The Ivorian midfielder has been a key player for Forest this season and his return will be a welcome boost for manager Steve Cooper.

With Sangare back in the squad, Forest will be hoping to continue their impressive form and push for a promotion spot in the Championship. Fans will be eagerly anticipating his return to the starting lineup and the impact he can make on the team.

Stay tuned for updates on Hudson-Odoi’s recovery and Sangare’s return as Nottingham Forest look to make a push for promotion this season.

  • Bibas family remain captive in Gaza, as Israelis hoping against hope – Israel News

People in Israel and across the world have pledged to wear orange on Wednesday, in homage to the hair color of the last two young children still held hostage in Gaza.

“Orange Day,” in honor of Kfir and Ariel Bibas and their parents, Shiri and Yarden, is just the latest activist initiative to keep the world’s eyes on the family of four, who were taken captive on Oct. 7, 2023, and have become symbols of the hostages’ plight.

Graffiti of the family — including one piece in Tel Aviv showing the older brother pushing a stroller with the words, “Ariel will never be the same again” — has appeared all over Israel’s streets. Fueled by the passion of mothers who too easily can see their own children in Kfir and Ariel, posts about them routinely go viral on social media around the world. They have inspired art, songs, prayers and even, briefly, a fruitless digital detective hunt after a video showing two red-haired boys among a crowd of Gazan children circulated last summer.

The family’s symbolism has endured even as reasons for optimism have dwindled. Still, Israelis and their most prominent spokespeople have proceeded with the hope that the Bibases are alive. Itamar Lippner, a Tel Aviv attorney, might have been speaking for an entire nation when he posted on social media this week, “All the signs point to bad news.”

Then he added, “Of course, I keep on praying that all the signs are wrong.”

Orange balloons have become a symbol of the Bibas family because of the abducted children’s red hair. (credit: MIRIAM ALSTER/FLASH90)

The Israeli government seems to be priming the public for tragedy. There’s no indication that officials have insisted on their release during the first weeks of the current ceasefire, even as others have gone free. A delay in the release of another civilian, Arbel Yehud, threatened to derail the ceasefire and led Israel to clamp down on Palestinian civilians in Gaza. Israel has made no such ultimatums around the Bibas family.

Last week, in one of the most direct official Israeli comments on the family’s state, IDF Spokesman Daniel Hagari expressed “grave concerns for their fate.” This week, Israel received word that of the 26 hostages yet to be released in the ceasefire’s first phase, 18 are alive and eight are dead.

“The information we received is not good,” Shiri’s cousin Jimmy Miller, who has acted as a family spokesperson, said on Tuesday. “The army is afraid about the state in which they will be returned, but nothing is proven yet.”

Like Miller, Jews around the world are facing down the cruel question of which group the Bibas family is in — and in many cases wishing away signs that the answer will be crushing.

“I’ve consistently chosen to believe that the news will be good,” said Hemdat Beck, a nonprofit worker from Tel Aviv. “Of course, there have been moments of despair and breakdowns, but even when my friends mentioned rumors coming from Hamas [about hostages who were killed], I said it was a lie, that it wasn’t true. If it were truly true, there would have been an official announcement by now, and since there hasn’t been any at any point, I choose to believe this is not their fate.”

More than any other hostage, the Bibases have come to represent not only the struggle to free the captives but, in the eyes of Israel’s supporters around the world, the justice of their cause following the tragedy of Hamas’ massacre. The family has, in turn, become a conduit for the torrent of Jewish and Israeli emotions that flowed from Oct. 7 and its aftermath — as if carrying the pain, grief and resilience that have characterized 16 months of efforts to free the hostages.

The faces of the Bibas family were burned into the consciousnesses of many beginning on Oct. 7, when footage spread of a terrified Shiri clutching the two young boys as they were abducted to Gaza. It was an early and raw image of the day’s atrocities.

Since then, photos of the young family have become some of the most recognizable pictures of the hostages: a photo of Kfir Bibas, taken captive at 9 months old, smiling; a shot of the family in matching Batman pajamas; another of Shiri hugging her children in happier times.

Hostage rallies around the world have centered on fragments of the Bibas family’s life: 11 days ago, gatherings around the world marked Kfir’s second birthday. People have shown up at rallies for the hostages in Batman costumes — an homage to the photo.

“I get messages all the time from people — mainly women — saying, ‘I’m not sleeping, if they don’t get out alive I don’t think I’ll ever get over this,’” said Jonny Daniels, a pro-Israel influencer who said his posts about the Bibases routinely get the most engagement by a wide margin. “If you ask anyone in the world to identify the Israeli hostages, most will tell you the ginger children.”

All of the other children abducted to Gaza have long been home. In November 2023, during the first ceasefire in the war, Hamas released dozens of children among more than 100 total hostages who went free.

The Bibas brothers were not among them. That week, Hamas announced that Shiri and the boys had been killed, releasing a torturous video of Yarden, who was abducted separately, after he had received that news.

At the time, Israel said it could not confirm Hamas’ allegation, accusing the terror group of psychological warfare. No further information emerged in the ensuing 15 months, even as the fates of many other hostages — both living and dead — were confirmed publicly by the government.

The Bibas’ relatives have continued to reject suggestions that the family is dead. In June, the family criticized former Defense Minister Benny Gantz for telling Israel’s public broadcaster that he believed Israel knew the fate of the Bibases, and that the public would hear “when the time is ripe.”

And on Monday, they released a statement, once again urging the public to refrain from sharing unverified information even as Israeli officials said they had informed the families of the eight hostages believed to be dead about their status.

“Since October 7th, when the video of the cruel abduction was published, we have been living in fear and anxiety for their fate every minute of every day,” the statement reads. “We ask you to respect Shiri, Yarden, Ariel, and Kfir, as well as the entire family, and refrain from spreading rumors or speculations that unsettle us.”

‘Trying not to drown in a sea of rumors’

Eli Bibas, the children’s grandfather, recently addressed a crowd at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv saying that he was “trying not to drown in a sea of rumors, the news, the half truths and lies around the negotiations.”

A few family members have been sounding notes of despair. On the occasion of Kfir’s second birthday, Shiri’s cousin Jimmy said, “We won’t do anything special because the situation is very strange. We know nothing about them.”

As talk turns to reconstruction of Gaza, a grim possibility has begun to be discussed openly — that some Israeli hostages may never be found. David Barnea, the head of the Mossad intelligence agency, reportedly told hostage families this week that bodies of hostages that lie under the rubble may be destroyed if bulldozers are used to clear the territory.

The uncertainty around the Bibas family feels frustrating to some Israelis. Lippner said Israeli press outlets often “dance around the subject.”

Channel 12 came under fire for originally mentioning the “women” hostages to be released during the ceasefire, leaving out the word “children.” After a backlash, the channel added the word into its coverage.

Some say they understand why it might be appealing to extend hope in a traumatized country.

“I want to believe that if there were even a shred of hope that they were alive, everything possible would have been done to save them,” said Avigail Harel, an Israeli nonprofit worker. “Sadly, I think the state has evidence that they have not been alive for a long time, but does not want to publicize or discuss it too much because they know it would become a national trauma.”

Beck was among those who explain their optimism by noting that Hamas said Hanna Katsir was dead, only to release her alive days later. A Hamas announcement in 2023 also seemed to suggest Daniella Gilboa was dead; she walked across a stage in Gaza last week before her release.

Beck said that in light of how invested many have become in the Bibas’ fate, Hamas may view the family as a valuable bargaining chip.

“It really feels with the Bibases like last-minute fake rumors meant to inflame,” she said. “I think they have a very strong interest in keeping them alive. Unless, God forbid, they were killed by our own forces over time, I want to believe in the good.”

Recently, as people understand that firmer news about the Bibas family is imminent because of the ceasefire, social media has erupted anew with posts about the family. Ms. Rachel, the toddler video superstar who drew criticism from some supporters of Israel for raising money for children in Gaza last year, posted Kfir’s photo on his birthday, wishing “that Kfir, his brother Ariel, and his parents, Yarden and Shiri, come home.”

Tablet magazine recently posted a stylized illustration of Shiri and the boys against the backdrop of masked Hamas gunmen. Rabbi Evan Schultz posted a poem imagining the family as a “great big orange tree,” adding that if they die, “know we all loved you and will visit your tree regularly watering it with tears and fragile ribbons of hope.” And hundreds of people pledged on social media to don orange on Wednesday.

Daniels described hearing from parents in the United States who were distraught after catching their 5-year-old packing a backpack “to go and get Ariel and Kfir.” He said the extent of emotional investment in the family worries him — especially if it emerges that the worst came to pass.

“Their story has impacted people on a level that is kind of indescribable,” he said. “I’m reminding people that this is a very difficult time, but there has to be a separation between you and them. You’re not their family.”

He added, “I’m thoroughly concerned about what happens when they do come out and how they come out. If it doesn’t end with what we all hope for, I don’t know how people’s mental health is going to be, and this is wide-scale. I’m talking about individuals everywhere. This isn’t just an Israeli issue — this is a strong international issue.”

Daniels’ partner, Danielle Katz, is a psychiatrist in private practice in the United States. She said she frequently encounters women who are deeply invested in the Bibas family’s story. The women, she noted, are typically middle-aged, affluent and white.

“These are the most involved, the most consumed and the most concerned by it all,” Katz said. “Add on top of that that these are also Jewish mothers, you have the perfect recipe for people who are completely distraught.”

While attention to the Bibases comes from a deep sense of caring, she said, she has also heard darker and more complicated themes.

“I hear from clients all the time: It’s almost a survivor’s guilt of being over here. … People feel like being involved and being angry and being emotionally invested is their only contribution,” she said, noting that the investment can come at a cost.

“There are a lot of women who have told me that their children have felt somewhat neglected by the obsession of it all, asking, ‘Do you love me as much as you love Israel?’ ‘Do you love me as much as you love the Bibases?’” Katz said.

Natalie Solomon, who works at a Jewish school in Dallas, said she recognized that outsized attention is paid to the Bibas family — but said it’s because the Jewish people have become wrapped up in their fate.

“We’re all just waiting. Holding our breath. Desperate for any piece of news,” she said. “If me, a mom in Texas, can’t stop thinking about a mother and her babies in the depth of hell, how does the family feel? The torture is not just of Shiri, Yarden, Ariel and Kfir, although of course we can’t possibly imagine what they are going through.”

She continued, “The torture to all of Am Yisrael waiting for these little red-headed boys to be back home — I don’t want to hear speculation, I only want to hear the official statement.”

The Bibas family, a group of Israeli citizens, has been held captive in Gaza for over a year now, and their loved ones in Israel are clinging to hope for their safe return. Despite efforts from the Israeli government and international organizations to negotiate their release, the family remains in captivity, their fate uncertain.

The Bibas family’s ordeal began when they were kidnapped while visiting Gaza for a family event. Since then, their relatives in Israel have been living in a constant state of anxiety, unsure of the conditions in which their loved ones are being held and desperate for any news of their well-being.

The situation highlights the ongoing tensions and hostilities between Israel and Gaza, as well as the toll that conflicts in the region take on innocent civilians. As the Bibas family’s ordeal continues, their relatives in Israel are holding onto hope for their safe return, praying for a miracle that will bring them back home.

Despite the challenges and obstacles they face, the Bibas family’s loved ones in Israel remain determined to keep fighting for their release, refusing to give up hope that one day they will be reunited with their missing family members. Their story serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of political conflicts, and the enduring power of love and hope in the face of adversity.

Borussia Dortmund confirm Mike Tullberg will remain on the bench against Heidenheim

Borussia Dortmund’s Lars Ricken confirmed that BVB interim head coach Mike Tullberg will remain on the sidelines for this weekend’s Bundesliga fixture against Heidenheim. Tullberg responded to an enquiry from the German associated press on Wednesday. Tullberg coached the team during last Saturday’s 2-2 league draw against Bremen and will be on the bench for this evening’s Champions’ League fixture against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Ricken and his fellow co-sporting-director Sebastian Kehl both commented on the BVB coaching search whilst speaking to German footballing media after the Bremen match. The two front office administrators emphasised that they found themselves in no rush to fill the position. Ricken lauded Tullberg for his work. Kehl hinted that Tullberg might remain in charge for quite some time.

Mike Tullberg has our full confidence,” Ricken – as quoted by Kicker – said. “We’re allowing ourselves the requisite time. We’re excellently positioned with Mike at the moment because he reaches the players.”

“The right decision will be made when we are ready,” added Kehl, “Until then, Mike enjoys our confidence. I’m a big fan of promoting from within, but we might need some external input in our current situation.”

  • Hawks’ Johnson to remain out, more medical tests scheduled

Atlanta Hawks forward Jalen Johnson, already ruled out of Saturday night’s home game against the Toronto Raptors, will continue to be sidelined as he has further medical testing on his injured left shoulder, the team announced.

Johnson sustained the injury when he blocked a layup attempt by Toronto’s Scottie Barnes in the second quarter of Atlanta’s 122-110 road loss Thursday.

“[Johnson] will be listed as out as he undergoes further medical testing and evaluation,” the Hawks said in a statement Saturday afternoon. “His injury and status will be updated as appropriate.”

Johnson missed five games with a right shoulder problem and returned on Jan. 18.

He leads the Hawks with 10.0 rebounds per game. He is second in scoring average (18.9), assists per game (5.0) and minutes per game (35.7). All four averages are career bests.

Atlanta selected Johnson with the 20th pick of the 2021 NBA draft out of Duke. In his four-year career, he averages 11.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 23.6 minutes per game over 184 games (94 starts).

The Atlanta Hawks have announced that forward Cam Reddish will remain out of the lineup as he undergoes further medical tests. The team has not provided specific details about the nature of Reddish’s injury, but they are taking a cautious approach to his recovery.

Reddish has missed the past few games due to the injury, and it appears that he will be sidelined for the foreseeable future. The Hawks are hopeful that the additional tests will provide more clarity on the situation, but they are not rushing Reddish back onto the court.

In the meantime, the Hawks will have to rely on their depth to fill the void left by Reddish’s absence. The team has shown resilience in the face of injuries this season, and they will need to continue to do so as they navigate this latest setback.

Fans will be eagerly awaiting updates on Reddish’s condition as the team prepares for their upcoming games. In the meantime, they can only hope for a speedy recovery for the talented young forward.

  • As crackdown begins in Hawaii, advocates urge immigrants to remain calm

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown seems to be happening so quickly, legislators and immigrant advocates are scrambling to blunt its impact here in Hawaii.

The local office of Homeland Security Investigations posted photos on social media of officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Drug Enforcement Administration arresting immigrants.

The arrestees were not identified by name and the office did not say how many were arrested, but Gary Singh, an attorney for a few of them, said they had prior removal orders and had been in hiding.

“Their top priorities right now is individuals with final removal order or they have criminal convictions,” Singh said. “Once they wrap that up, there will be many different stages of different categories, I believe.”

Liza Gill, president of the Hawaii Coalition for Immigrants Rights, said the photos and the high-profile military transport deportations are an effort to intimidate immigrants and appeal to Trump’s anti-immigration base.

“The whole purpose is to create fear, is to make people feel very afraid to come out of their homes, to go to school, to go to a doctor’s office,” she said, “and I think that this new federal administration wants to showcase them looking tough, and it looks tough.”

Sandy Ma, an attorney with nonprofit The Legal Clinic, urges concerned immigrants to call the coalition or her office at (808) 777-7071 for answers about their options and rights.

“This federal administration is to drum up fear and we want to allay that concern,” she said.

Ma’s organization is offering written guidance, including small red cards to help immigrants stand up for their rights if approached by law enforcement.

“So, first of all, if ICE comes knocking on their door, they do not have to let them in their door,” Ma said. “Everyone in this country whether they are in this country with documents or without documents have constitutional rights.”

“Always stay calm. Do not run,” Ma said. “Provide them with the red card. You can contact our office for red cards.”

Although the nationwide raids are frightening, advocates are urging immigrants without authorization and their families to go about their daily lives while lawmakers are drafting laws to prevent local law enforcement collaboration with immigration, and to block raids at schools, churches or hospitals.

Hawaii Sen. Karl Rhoads, who chairs the Judiciary Committee, points out that by enforcing local laws, Hawaii law enforcement is already helping find and lead to deportation of criminals.

He also doesn’t think that the Hawaii public is as supportive of mass deportation as other states.

“It’s better that people enter the country legally, but does it really make any sense to spend all this time and energy resources money on often breaking up families and sending back people who are otherwise just doing all the jobs the rest of us don’t want to do?” he said.

As crackdown begins in Hawaii, advocates urge immigrants to remain calm

As immigration enforcement ramps up in Hawaii, advocates are urging immigrants to remain calm and informed about their rights.

With recent reports of increased ICE raids and arrests, many immigrant communities are feeling fearful and uncertain about what the future holds. Advocates are reminding immigrants that they have rights, regardless of their immigration status, and that they should not be afraid to seek help and support.

It is important for immigrants to know that they have the right to remain silent and refuse to answer questions without a lawyer present. They also have the right to refuse entry to their home without a warrant signed by a judge. Advocates are encouraging immigrants to know their rights and to have a plan in place in case they or a loved one is detained.

In these uncertain times, it is crucial for immigrants to stay informed, stay connected to their communities, and seek out support from organizations and advocates who can help. By remaining calm and informed, immigrants can better protect themselves and their families in the face of increased immigration enforcement.

For more information and resources, immigrants are encouraged to reach out to local advocacy organizations and legal service providers. Together, we can support and protect our immigrant communities during this challenging time.

  • Bills OC Joe Brady to remain in Buffalo, withdraws name from Saints’ head coaching search

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Buffalo Bills are hopeful their magical season continues beyond Sunday night with a trip to New Orleans. But no matter what happens in the AFC Championship Game against the Chiefs, the Bills know they won’t be searching for a new offensive coordinator this offseason.

Joe Brady, the 35-year-old play-caller for Josh Allen and the Bills, will return as Buffalo’s offensive coordinator, sources tell CBS Sports. Brady will not interview with the New Orleans Saints for their vacant head-coaching position next week, meaning the coaching cycle will be completed without Brady taking an in-person interview with any team that had a vacancy.

The Bills had the second-best scoring offense in the league this year with Brady as the full-time play-caller. He took over 10 games into last season after head coach Sean McDermott fired Ken Dorsey, and the offense flourished under Brady to end the season.

Brady took initial virtual interviews with the Saints, Bears and Jaguars. Sources say the Jets requested to interview Brady but he declined. Because the Bills won in the divisional round, league rules stipulated he couldn’t do any interviews until after the conference championship weekend.

In the time between, the Bears hired Ben Johnson as their head coach and the Jaguars nabbed Liam Coen. The Saints had their in-person interview process delayed due to inclement weather early in the week and didn’t get the opportunity to meet with Aaron Glenn, a top candidate, before he inked with the Jets.

The Saints are continuing their process as the last team remaining with a head-coach vacancy. New Orleans interviewed Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka this week, and the team is hopeful to schedule interviews with Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and former Packers and Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy this upcoming week. Interim head coach Darren Rizzi remains as candidate as well.

Brady’s star began to rise in 2019 when he won the Broyles Award for the top assistant coach in college football, helping LSU to a national title and Joe Burrow to the Heisman Trophy. He joined Matt Rhule’s initial staff with the Carolina Panthers in 2020 but was fired before the end of his second season. Rhule would go on to be fired five games into the next season.

Brady took a job with the Bills as the quarterbacks coach going into the 2022 season before being promoted midway through the 2023 season. He had an interview with the Falcons for their head coach position last year that was ultimately filled by Raheem Morris.

This season the Bills averaged 29.5 offensive points per game. That’s the second-most in franchise history behind the 29.6 offensive points per game averaged by the 2020 Bills. Josh Allen is expected to finish in the top-two in MVP voting this year.

The odds are in favor of Brady eventually becoming a head coach in the NFL, and continued success in Buffalo will only increase those odds. But it will be at least another year before that time comes.

After leading the Buffalo Bills’ offense to a successful season, offensive coordinator Joe Brady has decided to remain with the team and withdraw his name from consideration for the New Orleans Saints’ head coaching position.

Brady, who joined the Bills in 2020, has been instrumental in the development of quarterback Josh Allen and the team’s high-powered offense. His decision to stay in Buffalo is a major win for the team, as they look to build on their success in the upcoming season.

While the Saints will have to look elsewhere for their next head coach, Bills fans are thrilled to have Brady back on board and are excited to see what he can accomplish with the team in the future. It’s clear that Buffalo is committed to keeping their talented coaching staff intact as they continue to strive for greatness in the NFL.
