  • Steven Spielberg remembers 6-year-old Drew Barrymore was an improv pro on set of ‘E.T.’

    CNN
     —

Even at six years old, Drew Barrymore had a lot to say.

Director Steven Spielberg opened up about working with Barrymore on the 1982 classic “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” during a conversation on Saturday at the TCM Classic Film Festival’s 92NY event. The pair reminisced about their time together on the set, with Spielberg saying he was most impressed by his young star’s ability to improv.

“The camera was rolling and Drew said, ‘I don’t like his feet.’ We used it,” Spielberg recounted at the event, according to People. “Drew made up a lot of her own dialogue because she was irrepressible.”

The director added that Barrymore’s improvisational skills were “gold” and he went on to recall how the film’s screenwriter Melissa Matheson, too, “couldn’t believe the stuff that Drew was coming up with.” Matheson died in 2015.

Barrymore, with the passage of time, shared the same sentiment.

“I can’t believe the stuff I came up with,” she said, adding that she was surprise by how many of her improved lines ended up in the final cut.

The tear-jerker won four Oscars in 1982, including best visual effects and original score. It was a massive hit, drawing in more than $359 million at the US box office at the time, according to Box Office Mojo.

Barrymore previously said on a 2020 episode of her morning talk show “The Drew Barrymore Show” that even as a child, she was precocious enough to snag a keepsake from set.

“I do have the red cowboy hat I wore in E.T. It is in the girls’ room somewhere and reminds me that I was 6 years old wearing that hat,” Barrymore said. “I’m so glad I still have it.”

Barrymore added, “When we’re kids, we don’t think something will be important to us one day; we clean out our room and throw stuff away. It’s nice if parents put something of theirs in their kids’ rooms, so it’s a transference of memories and energy.”

In a recent interview, legendary director Steven Spielberg fondly remembered working with a 6-year-old Drew Barrymore on the set of the iconic film ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’. Spielberg revealed that Barrymore, despite her young age, was a natural at improvisation and added a special spark to the film.

“Drew was like a little improv pro on set,” Spielberg reminisced. “She had this incredible ability to come up with her own lines and reactions that just brought so much life to her character. It was truly amazing to see someone so young with such talent and creativity.”

Barrymore’s performance in ‘E.T.’ catapulted her into stardom and solidified her as a talented actress at a young age. Spielberg’s praise for her improvisational skills further cements her status as a standout child actor in Hollywood history.

As ‘E.T.’ remains a beloved classic to this day, fans can look back on Barrymore’s unforgettable performance with a newfound appreciation for her natural talent and infectious energy on set.

  • Rich Ohrnberger remembers his rookie nickname from Randy Moss

On Julian Edelman’s podcast, “Games with Names,” Rich Ohrnberger remembered when Randy Moss thought he was a coach during his rookie season.

In 2009, Ohrnberger was drafted by the Patriots where Moss immediately started calling him ‘coach.’

“He gave me this nickname and it happened immediately,” Ohrnberger said. “I have no idea why, because we barely spoke to each other outside of passing by each other in the hallway or outside the meeting rooms or on the football field. You know, we’re on our way to the football field, he’d be like, ‘Hey, what’s up coach?’ He called me coach.”

The offensive guard told Edelman his excitment at this newfound nickname.

“I’m like ‘Oh my gosh, maybe, like, maybe, I’m in. Like he gave me a nickname. I’m telling people back home Randy Moss gave me a nickname, he really likes me.”

The origin of the player’s nickname was revealed when Ohrnberger, along with the other rookies, stood up and introduced themselves to the rest of the team.

“And so I get up there and I can’t remember if it was in the meeting or immediately after, but Randy Moss pulls me aside and he goes, ‘Motherf*****, you a player.’ He goes, ‘You’ve been a player this whole time?’”

Through Edelman’s laughter, he interrupts, “I think it was in front of the whole team.”

Ohrnberger continues his impression of Moss. “‘You gray hair, b****. I thought you was a coach…Oh hell no. Bill, did we waste a draft pick on this motherf*****? Are you kidding me? What, is he going to go out there and break a hip? Goddamn Bill.’”

Ohrnberger goes back to his normal voice, remembering his embarassment in the moment.

“And I’m just like, ‘Oh my God, that was not a nickname.’ … He thought I was a f******* coach…How unbelievably embarrassing. I mean I told everyone. I was like, ‘Yeah, Randy really likes me. It’s going pretty well, gang.’”

Former NFL player Rich Ohrnberger recently shared a funny memory from his rookie season, reminiscing about the nickname he received from none other than Hall of Famer Randy Moss.

Ohrnberger, who played offensive lineman for the New England Patriots, revealed that Moss dubbed him “The Big Goofy” during his rookie year. Despite the teasing, Ohrnberger took it all in stride and even embraced the moniker.

In a recent interview, Ohrnberger laughed as he recalled the nickname and the playful banter he shared with Moss during his time with the Patriots. It’s clear that even years later, Ohrnberger still cherishes the memories from his NFL career, including the humorous moments with his teammates.

It’s always fun to hear these behind-the-scenes stories from players, and it just goes to show that even in a competitive environment like the NFL, there’s still room for camaraderie and good-natured ribbing among teammates. Rich Ohrnberger may have been “The Big Goofy” to Randy Moss, but to fans, he’ll always be remembered as a hardworking and dedicated player on the field.

  • Kevin Costner Says He’s Lucky to Turn 70 as He Remembers Whitney Houston

As Kevin Costner turns 70, he remembers his once costar Whitney Houston.

On his birthday, Jan. 18, Costner shared a photo to his Instagram Stories of himself and Houston on the set of 1992’s “The Bodyguard,” in which the pair costarred. The photo originated from Houston’s account, which is run by her estate.

“This photo reminds me of how lucky I am to be getting another birthday,” Costner wrote in the post. “We lost such a light when we lost Whitney.”

Houston died at age 48 on Feb. 11, 2012. She would’ve been 61 this year.

In the photo, Costner and Houston are joined by hairstylist Ellin LaVar.

“Happy birthday to Kevin Costner!,” read the photo’s caption. “A behind the scenes photo from ‘The Bodyguard’ with Kevin, Whitney and Ellin LaVar, Whitney’s hairstylist for the film.”

In June of 2024, Costner said that when speaking at Houston’s funeral in 2012, he refused to shorten his 17-mintue eulogy so that television networks like CNN could air commercials during the broadcast.

“I had been working on this speech…and I tried to compile everything I wanted to do and finally crafted this speech,” Costner said. “Somebody said, ‘CNN’s here, they wouldn’t mind if your remarks were kept shorter because they’re going to have commercials.’ And I said, ‘They can get over that. They can play the commercial while I’m talking, I don’t care.’”

He continued, “I could feel the weight on her, now it’s shifted to me. What am I going to say about this little girl? [I] went back to that church in Newark and it was filled. It was electric. There were two bands playing, the church was alive. It was like, boom!”

Kevin Costner recently celebrated his 70th birthday and reflected on his life and career, expressing gratitude for reaching this milestone. In a recent interview, the actor also took the time to remember his late co-star Whitney Houston, whom he starred alongside in the iconic film “The Bodyguard.”

Costner shared fond memories of working with Houston on the film, praising her talent and professionalism. He acknowledged the impact that Houston had on his life and career, and expressed his gratitude for having had the opportunity to work with her.

As he celebrated his 70th birthday, Costner reflected on the passage of time and the blessings that have come his way. He expressed gratitude for his family, friends, and fans, and emphasized the importance of cherishing every moment.

Costner’s humble and grateful attitude towards reaching this milestone age serves as a reminder to appreciate the blessings in our lives and to never take anything for granted. On her very last day in office, the city released the following statement about Hye-Moore.

She continued to work in the community even during her illness helping families, and the homeless population and fighting for causes she believed in.

“Pat Gibson-Hye Moore grew up in New York City and attended John Jay College of Criminal Justice, receiving a degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology. Pat relocated to Florence, South Carolina in 1990, stepping into the next season of her life. She is now married to her soul mate, Kermit Ronnie Moore, and is a member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church where she serves as Chair of the Political Action Committee and is a member of the Gospel Choir. Her death marks the end of an era for Florence, but her incredible legacy will forever remain an indelible part of our community’s history. Pat Gibson Hye Moore was not just a public servant; she was a tireless advocate, a courageous leader, and a champion for justice and equality. Pat broke barriers and paved the way for future generations of leaders, especially women of color. Her unwavering dedication to the people she served was evident in every decision she made, every initiative she led, and every individual she uplifted. Throughout her career, Pat was a passionate voice for the most vulnerable in our community. She advocated for equitable access to resources, better opportunities for all, and a government that worked for the people—not the other way around. Her leadership on critical issues, from affordable housing and education to healthcare and public safety, has shaped Florence in profound and lasting ways. She was known for her integrity, her vision, and her ability to bring people together, even in the most challenging times. Beyond her work on the City Council, Pat was a mentor, a role model, and a fierce ally in the fight for social justice. Her commitment to service extended far beyond politics—she was deeply involved in countless community organizations, always striving to make Florence a better place for everyone, regardless of background or circumstance. While we mourn her loss, we also celebrate the remarkable life she lived and the many lives she touched. Pat’s legacy is one of progress, compassion, and resilience. She showed us that leadership is not just about holding office, but about serving others with dignity, respect, and an unwavering commitment to the greater good. On behalf of the Florence County Democratic Party, I extend my deepest condolences to Pat’s family, friends, and all who were privileged to know and work alongside her. We stand with them in this time of grief, knowing that Pat’s spirit will continue to inspire and guide us as we move forward. Pat Gibson Hye Moore leaves a lasting imprint on our hearts and on the city she loved. We will honor her memory by carrying forward the work she so passionately believed in, striving to create a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone in Florence County. Rest in peace, Pat. • Richmond remembers JFK assassination

    Richmond remembers JFK assassination

Inside Richmond’s Thalhimers department store, it was shaping up to be a normal Friday morning. The holiday season had brought in an influx of shoppers looking to cross off a few items from their lists.

The usual hustle and bustle of the day took a turn when the news began to trickle in. One by one, shoppers and workers began to turn their attention to the television display.

Those closest began to huddle in front of the wall of various-sized sets. Moments later, about a hundred people stood silent and motionless as a Dallas reporter delivered the news in a broken voice: President John F. Kennedy was dead.

“A small gray-haired woman carrying a shopping bag set it down and looked at her watch. It was 2:15 p.m. She had been watching the television set for 15 or 20 minutes, hearing about the attempt at assassination,” Richmond Times-Dispatch reporter Charles McDowell Jr. reported. “Now, tears came into her eyes, and she picked up her shopping bag and walked away quickly.”

    People are also reading…

Wednesday marks 60 years since Kennedy was struck down while riding in a Lincoln Continental convertible through the streets of Dallas in a seismic event that stunned the nation and world. In a Times-Dispatch report titled “Shocked, Numbed Richmond Hears the News,” McDowell Jr. wrote about how Richmonders responded to the assassination.

Inside the department store, people remained close to televisions waiting for any news to come in. They watched as a clergyman in Dallas prepared a prayer for the crowds who had just waved to the president. When he began his prayer, those in the store bowed their heads.

At the old St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church on Franklin Street, people began to file in and kneel at the altar.

A taxicab driver at the bus terminal had learned of the initial reports, but not of the president’s death. Then, while stopped at a traffic light at Fourth and Broad streets, he heard the news from the radio of the car next to him.

At Maggie Walker High School, Principal Harry Williams was charged with informing students. After writing out a message and sending runners to each classroom, he watched three girls cry on the stairs. Others volunteered to help the head custodian lower the flag to half staff.

In a little restaurant near Byrd Park, the usually boisterous crowd fell silent as they listened to the broadcast of reporter Charles Collingwood outlining the tragic events in Dallas.

“For a while the only sound other than from the television was the sloshing as a waitress washed dishes behind the counter,” the Saturday, Nov. 23, 1963, edition of The Times-Dispatch read.

That silence continued across the city. In the barbershop of Hotel John Marshall, all chairs were turned towards the television set. The only other sounds were the clicking of scissors and the occasional buzz of electric clippers, McDowell reported.

Most activities scheduled that Friday night were called off or postponed.

While Richmond and the state favored Republican Richard Nixon in the 1960 presidential election, Kennedy held stock within the city’s Black population as his campaign championed civil rights. Many of the early memorials held in the city were on behalf of Black leaders.

The Richmond Crusade for Voters organized an impromptu memorial at the steps of the state capital. There, 500 people mourned the late president and heard prayers and speeches from those with several religious and civil rights organizations. Among the attendees were former City Council member and prominent civil rights activist Oliver Hill.

Lynda Byrd-Harden, former secretary of the Virginia chapter of the NAACP, was at Mount Olive Elementary School in King William County when she learned of Kennedy’s assassination. In a 30th anniversary report issued in the Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1993, edition of The Times-Dispatch, Byrd Harden recalled children running and screaming from classrooms when news of the killing was heard.

“I think one of the most disappointing things for people of my generation, was that we think we may have missed all the opportunities to make a difference,” Byrd-Harden said. “What John Kennedy symbolized was peace and hope, the hope that people would work together in peace and harmony.”

This year marks the 58th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. Richmond, like many cities across the nation, remembers this tragic event that shook the country to its core.

In Richmond, there are several ways that the community comes together to honor the memory of JFK. The Virginia Museum of History and Culture often hosts exhibits and events that commemorate his life and legacy. Additionally, there are memorial services held at various locations throughout the city, where people gather to reflect on the impact of his presidency and untimely death.
