Dwyane Wade — Part of kidney removed due to cancerous tumor
Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade said he had surgery on his kidney in 2023, with doctors removing a tumor that was later deemed to be cancerous.
In comments made on his “The Why with Dwyane Wade” podcast that were published Thursday, the three-time NBA champion revealed publicly for the first time that he was dealing with some stomach and urinary issues, which led him to see a doctor after “taking a few years off from taking physicals.” Wade said he a had full-body scan, which revealed a “cyst/tumor” on his right kidney.
Multiple doctors recommended surgery, which he ultimately underwent in December 2023.
Wade said doctors removed 40% of his right kidney and that tests on the tumor after it was removed showed it was cancerous.
“Thank God that I did do the surgery,” he said.
Wade reflected on his decision to have the surgery, saying it was a low point in his life.
“I think it was the first time my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak,” he said. “That moment was probably the weakest point I’ve ever felt in my life. … I was struggling, dog. Struggling. And one thing you never want to do as a man is you never want your family to see you as weak. You don’t want to be perceived weak and you don’t want to be seen in your weak moments. But I had to.”
Wade praised his family for being there for him.
“In that processes of weakness, I found strength,” he said.
Wade, who retired after the 2018-19 season, holds several franchise records with the Miami Heat — including points, assists, steals, games and minutes played. His 16-year career in the NBA included 15 with the Heat, three championships and a Finals MVP in 2006.

Hall of Fame basketball star Dwyane Wade had a cancerous tumor removed from his kidney, he disclosed in the latest episode of his podcast on Thursday.
The 43-year-old retired NBA guard had 40% of his right kidney removed 13 months ago, he shared for the first time publicly on his The WY Network podcast.
In the episode shared exclusively with PEOPLE, Wade chronicles the “shocking” diagnosis, which came after years of him putting off going to the doctor for a physical.
Inspired by his father Dwyane Wade Sr.’s own journey with prostate cancer, the younger Wade visited the doctor and shared that he had been having stomach issues, cramps and that he was urinating slowly.
“On the process of checking, like, ‘Why is my piss coming out slow, why is my stream ain’t powerful? Why is it a little weak?’ ” Wade recalls on his podcast to co-host Bob Metelus.
A full-body scan revealed that there was a “cyst/tumor” on one of his kidneys, Wade says.
“And the doctor was like, ‘You need to have kidney surgery,’ ” he adds.
Multiple other doctors agreed with the diagnosis, Wade shares, so he made the decision to undergo surgery on Dec. 18, 2023.

After removing nearly half of his left kidney, doctors were able to determine that the tumor was cancerous, Wade says.
No further details were immediately available about Wade’s current health.
Through the experience, the three-time NBA champion learned the true meaning of family, he says.
“My own journey to have that surgery, I think it was the first time that my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak,” Wade shares. “That moment was probably the weakest point I’ve ever felt in my life”
He adds, “The moment I was by myself, I was struggling, dog.”
For the retired athlete, making the decision to undergo surgery was the right one, he says in the clip.
“I had a personal decision to make, and what it was was, ‘If this is cancerous, if this tumor, this cyst is cancerous, on your kidney, you’re 41 years old, you probably need surgery because it’s something that needs to be removed so it doesn’t spread,’ ” Wade says.
Showing his vulnerability was another lesson Wade learned in the process.
“As a man, you never want your family to see you weak,” he says. “Don’t want to be perceived weak, don’t want to be seen in your weakest moments but I had to.”

Wade shares two children with ex-wife Siovaughn Funches: Zaire, 22, and Zaya, 17, as well as a son, Xavier, 11, with Aja Metoyer. In 2018, Wade and his wife, actress Gabrielle Union, welcomed a daughter, Kaavia James, 6. Wade is also the legal guardian of his nephew, Dahveon Morris, 21.
He adds, “What I saw in the midst of me going through my illness, I saw my family that may not always talk, may not always agree. I saw everybody show up for me and be there for me and in that process, in my weakness I found strength in my family.”

This is a new level of fan entitlement. It is weird to me that they’re complaining about her music being too slow tempo when Gracie’s music is so slow (coming from a Gracie fan). Also I had no clue that people came prepared to remember the songs for openers they’ve never heard lolll.

Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was spotted with a cast on his right hand on Saturday, but it is reportedly not for an injury that will impact him heading into the 2025 season.
Williams was spotted with the cast while attending a USC basketball game. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the protection is in place because Williams had a cyst removed.
The procedure was described as a minor one and Williams is fine moving into the rest of the offseason.

Justine Bateman is calling for Gov. Gavin Newsom and other Los Angeles officials to be removed from office.
The actress insisted Newsom be removed after sharing a video of the California governor saying he wants to work with President-elect Donald Trump on fighting the fires.
“I really want other CA voters to see the lack of sincerity, the dismissiveness, the dedication to pretentiousness, and the dereliction of care for the citizens of California,” Bateman wrote on X.
“He has always demonstrated this. In every video. You cannot trust this kind of person with any role, and especially not one upon which our wellbeing depends,” she added. “Gavin Newsom needs to be removed, before something worse happens here.”

Bateman explained the importance of “rehearsed” planning in order to minimize the consequences of natural disasters. The actress noted Los Angeles’ current leadership was “incapable” of planning for these major events.
“If you can’t cover the basics, get out of our city. You are useless to us. You are a liability, and you have destroyed people’s lives because you didn’t do your job,” she said.
“You didn’t do what you were hired for. You didn’t do what we pay you for.” Bateman called for the officials to “resign out of shame and responsibility for the people whose lives you’ve destroyed right now.”

The LA Fires began Jan. 7 with the Palisades Fire. Fierce Santa Ana winds have been largely blamed for turning the fires sparked last week into infernos that leveled entire neighborhoods around the nation’s second-largest city, where there has been no significant rainfall in more than eight months.
The Southern California fires remain hard to control amid the current high winds, but firefighters are making progress and the fires have not spread very much over the past couple of days.
Altogether, the fires in the Los Angeles area have burned roughly 63.5 square miles (164 square kilometers) and damaged or destroyed more than 12,000 structures, leaving 24 dead.
