  • Will the “unbirthing” process of aquamation replace burial and cremation?

Francisco Rivero proudly shows off a large stainless steel pod in the middle of a cavernous concrete room. He unlatches its heavy vault door, swinging it open slowly to reveal an inner chamber just large enough for a person to lie inside.

Infographic, introduction and diagram that explains the basics of aquamation. Answers what is aquamation?Rivero is a funeral director at Pacific Interment Service in Emeryville, and the futuristic machine is an aquamation system. It uses water to dissolve every part of the human body except for the bones and teeth — a process also called alkaline hydrolysis.

“It just flows the water back and forth over the person, back and forth,” says Rivero in hypnotic tones. “You come in water, you’re leaving in water. It’s like an unbirthing.”

Rivero founded Pacific Interment in 1992, specializing in cremation at a time when the process was not widely used. In December of 2023, he installed his aquamation system, becoming the first to offer the service in the Bay Area and one of only four aquamation providers in California. He is convinced aquamation is the future of the funeral industry, and is on a mission to spread the word about a gentler, environmentally friendly alternative to cremation.

Though it has only been available to funeral homes in California since 2022, the concept of cremation by water actually stretches back to the 19th century. A pioneering version of the process was patented by Amos Herbert Hobson, a British farmer who had immigrated to the U.S., in 1888 as a way to turn animal carcasses into plant food to keep them from polluting the environment and spreading disease. The modern-day take on an alkaline hydrolysis system for human cadavers arrived in 2005 when one was installed at the Mayo Clinic.

In the aquamation process, the body is placed inside the machine, and the sealed chamber partially fills with a mixture of water and sodium hydroxide. The solution is then heated to 303 degrees Fahrenheit and circulated over the body, quietly breaking down its soft tissues, along with any bacteria and viruses. The machine sounds like a “small brook” when operating, Rivero says.

After three hours, all that remains is a pristine skeleton and a yellowish liquid that is safe to empty straight into the sewer.

“Technically, that water is clean enough that you could drink it,” Rivero says.

Bones and teeth are then ground into a fine, ivory powder and returned to the deceased’s family — much like the remains from cremation, without the ashen hue.

Rivero emigrated from Cuba in 1975, where his family had performed funerals since at least the 19th century. Because limited space there makes burials a challenge, the traditional Cuban practice is to bury the deceased for six to eight months and then to exhume and inter the remaining bones, Rivero says.

He sees a connection between this practice and aquamation, as both involve the recovery of bones after the rest of the body dissolves.

Aquamation, also known as alkaline hydrolysis or water cremation, is a process that uses water and alkaline chemicals to break down human remains into a liquid solution. This eco-friendly alternative to traditional burial and cremation is gaining popularity as people become more conscious of their environmental impact.

But will aquamation eventually replace burial and cremation as the preferred method of laying loved ones to rest? While some may argue that it offers a more environmentally friendly option, there are still barriers to widespread adoption.

One of the main concerns surrounding aquamation is the lack of regulations and infrastructure in place to support its widespread use. Currently, only a handful of states in the U.S. allow aquamation as a legal option for final disposition, and there are limited facilities that offer this service.

Additionally, there is a stigma surrounding aquamation that may deter some individuals from considering it as an option. Some people may find the idea of their loved one’s remains being turned into a liquid solution unsettling or disrespectful.

Despite these challenges, aquamation has the potential to become a more widely accepted and preferred method of final disposition in the future. Its environmentally friendly nature, lower carbon footprint, and reduced impact on land use make it an attractive option for those looking for a more sustainable way to say goodbye to their loved ones.

Only time will tell if aquamation will replace burial and cremation as the go-to method of laying loved ones to rest. In the meantime, it’s important to consider all options available and choose the one that aligns best with your values and beliefs.

  • Who Buckeyes, Ryan Day could tap to replace Chip Kelly

Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly left to call plays for the Las Vegas Raiders next season, resulting in a mammoth-sized hole for Ryan Day and the defending national champions on their coaching staff. Day now has to fill both coordinator spots and an offensive line vacancy coming off the historic run in the first year of the expanded College Football Playoff. He presumably has his pick of top candidates as one of the national title frontrunners in 2025.

Ohio State finished fourth in the Big Ten in total offense (429.4 yards per game) and No. 14 nationally in scoring offense (35.7 points per game) under Kelly. It was an improvement from the 407.9 YPG and 30.5 PPG the Buckeyes averaged in 2023. Ohio State averaged 36.3 points in four College Football Playoff games en route to the program’s first national championship since 2014.

Ohio State replaces Will Howard at quarterback along with both of its top rushers, but does return Jeremiah Smith, Carnell Tate and Brandon Inniss at wide receiver along with promising depth along the offensive line.

Here are some of the potential fits for the Buckeyes:

As Ryan Day looks to fill the vacancy left by Chip Kelly, there are a few talented individuals within the Buckeyes coaching staff that could be tapped for the position. Here are a few potential candidates:

    1. Kerry Coombs, Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator – Coombs has been a key member of the coaching staff for several years and has a strong track record of success. His experience and leadership could make him a top contender for the position.

    2. Kevin Wilson, Offensive Coordinator – Wilson has a wealth of experience as an offensive coordinator and has helped lead the Buckeyes to some impressive offensive performances. His knowledge of the game and ability to develop players could make him a strong candidate for the role.

    3. Tony Alford, Assistant Head Coach/Running Backs Coach – Alford has been instrumental in developing some of the top running backs in the country and has a strong reputation as a recruiter. His leadership skills and ability to connect with players could make him a strong candidate for the position.

While these are just a few potential candidates, there are many talented coaches within the Buckeyes program who could be considered for the role. It will be interesting to see who Ryan Day ultimately taps to replace Chip Kelly and lead the team to continued success.

  • Pennsylvania governor spurns Peta’s offer to replace Punxsutawney Phil with cake on Groundhog Day | Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania’s governor, Josh Shapiro, is claws out in a dispute with animal rights organization Peta over Groundhog Day, pushing back against activists who suggested that the world-famous marmot Punxsutawney Phil should be replaced with a cake.

Punxsutawney Phil headlines the yearly Groundhog Day festival in this small Pennsylvania town. The mythos surrounding this event maintains that this woodchuck can predict whether spring will start early, depending on whether he sees his shadow when exiting his nest.

Groundhog Day takes place on 2 February. Sunday’s event marks its 139th year.

A dispute between Shapiro and Peta started to unfold on 21 January when the organization sent a letter to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s president, Tom Dunkel, with a controversial pitch.

“Peta will deliver a delicious ‘Weather Reveal’ vegan cake each Groundhog Day in perpetuity if Dunkel agrees to let Punxsutawney Phil and his family retire to a reputable sanctuary, a move that will earn the outfit kudos from wildlife fans,” the group said in a press release.

“In a fun play on viral gender reveal videos, Peta’s tasty treat would be cut to expose one of two colors: blue, signifying six more weeks of winter, or pink, indicating an early spring,” the group explained in its pun-filled note. (Among Peta’s jeux de mots: “This would allow you to still make tourism dough while showing Phil a slice of decency.”)

Shapiro didn’t bite. The Democrat said, “Come and take it,” in a 31 January tweet.

Peta responded to Shapiro’s taunt on Saturday, replying to his X post: “It’s wonderful that you support Phil’s rehabilitation and release to a sanctuary! How would you like us to arrange pick up for him?”

Asked for comment on the ongoing dispute, Shapiro’s office said that he stood firm in support of Phil.

“The governor is dead serious in his defense of this historic Pennsylvania tradition and remains committed to protecting Punxsutawney Phil and the inner circle, and the role they play in the Groundhog Day celebration,” Manuel Bonder, Shapiro’s press secretary, told the Guardian.

The defense of Punxsutawney Phil made for strange bedfellows, WCHS noted.

“I agree with Governor Shapiro on something,” wrote Gabriella Hoffman, director of the Independent Women’s Forum Center for Energy and Conservation. “Peta is terrible.”

Groundhog Day traces its root to pre-Christian holidays feting seasonal turning points, according to the Library of Congress. When western European groups such as the Celts were converted to Christianity, church officials could not get them to abandon these festivals.

The first of February, among the days feting seasonal turning points, broadened into 2 February, transitioning into Candlemas, according to the Library of Congress. An English folk song showed that Candlemas became associated with weather prediction, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.

When this belief arrived in Germany, it came to include the hedgehog. In German lore, if “the hedgehog saw his shadow on Candlemas Day there would be a ‘Second Winter’ or six more weeks of bad weather”. German immigrants to the US brought their traditions but had to adapt to the lack of hedgehogs, the club said.

They picked another hibernating mammal: the groundhog.

Groundhog Day now brings 20,000-30,000 tourists to the area each year, according to WTAE. Tourists don’t seem to mind that Phil’s calls aren’t all that accurate, with scientists determining that a mere 35% of his predictions have been correct.

On Groundhog Day, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf made headlines by rejecting PETA’s proposal to replace Punxsutawney Phil with a cake for the annual weather prediction tradition. The animal rights organization suggested that using a cake instead of a live groundhog would be more ethical and prevent harm to the animal.

In response, Governor Wolf stated that Punxsutawney Phil is a beloved tradition in Pennsylvania and that he sees no reason to change it. He emphasized the importance of respecting and preserving cultural traditions, even if they may seem outdated or controversial.

While PETA’s intentions may have been well-meaning, it seems that Punxsutawney Phil will continue to be the star of Groundhog Day in Pennsylvania for the foreseeable future. Love it or hate it, the tradition lives on.

  • “Proper Cheating …”: Controversial Concussion Substitution Sees Harshit Rana Replace Shivam Dube vs England, Internet Reacts

Talented pacer Harshit Rana, who has played two Tests, quite surprisingly made a surprise entry into the India playing XI in the fourth T20I against England in Pune on Friday. Though initially not named in the XI, Rana was called upon to replace allrounder Shivam Dube as a concussion substitute after the latter was struck on the helmet in the final over of India’s innings. Dube, who scored 53, was hit on the helmet in the penultimate ball of the Indian innings by a Jamie Overton delivery.

Following the mandatory concussion test, Dube was cleared to play. However, he was run out on the final delivery of the innings.

Rana, who had recently played in the opening Test against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, came in to bowl in the 12th over and made an immediate impact, dismissing Liam Livingstone for 9. Rana finished with three wickets.

England skipper Jos Buttler appeared unhappy with the decision and was seen having a discussion with the umpires on the field. According to ICC’s rules, teams are only allowed to name like-for-like replacements if a batsman is ruled out due to a concussion.

The decision to use Rana as a replacement of Dube did not go down well with many social media users, with some calling it cheating.

India had posted 181/9 after being sent in to bat. The hosts won the match by 15 runs to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. The final T20I will be played in Mumbai on Sunday.

In a shocking turn of events during the first T20 match between India and England, Harshit Rana was brought in as a concussion substitute for Shivam Dube. The decision has sparked controversy and debate among cricket fans and experts alike.

Concussion substitutions were introduced in cricket to ensure the safety and well-being of players who suffer head injuries during a match. However, there have been instances where teams have been accused of abusing the rule to gain a tactical advantage.

In this case, many are questioning the legitimacy of Rana’s inclusion as a substitute, with some suggesting that he may not have genuinely suffered a concussion. The decision to replace an all-rounder like Dube with a batsman like Rana has also raised eyebrows.

The internet is abuzz with reactions to the controversial substitution, with some condemning it as cheating and others defending it as a necessary precaution for player safety. The debate is sure to continue in the days to come as more details about the incident emerge.

  • Explained: The Concussion Sub Rule Loophole That Allowed Specialist Bowler Harshit Rana To Replace Part-Timer Shivam Dube | IND vs ENG 2025

In the fourth India-England T20I, specialist pacer Harshit Rana was a concussion substitute for all-rounder Shivam Dube – a clause in the ICC's laws allowing India to do so despite the two not being "like-for-like" players.

In the fourth India-England T20I, specialist pacer Harshit Rana was a concussion substitute for all-rounder Shivam Dube – a clause in the ICC’s laws allowing India to do so despite the two not being “like-for-like” players.

Off the penultimate ball of the first innings, Dube, who scored 53, was struck on the helmet by a Jamie Overton bouncer. He was checked briefly by the Indian team physio, before going on to face the last delivery of the innings, taking India to 181-9.

Initially, Dube did not come out to field in the second innings, with Ramandeep Singh standing in as a substitute fielder. As the innings wore on, Dube did not take the field and it emerged that Harshit Rana was on the ground instead.

There were explanations ventured by the broadcast commentators that Rana may be a concussion substitute for Dube, given the blow the latter had taken earlier on – this was confirmed at the end of the 10th over, meaning this was now officially Rana’s T20I debut.

Why was the Harshit Rana-Shivam Dube concussion sub controversial?

England captain Jos Buttler was not happy with the decision to allow Rana to replace Dube, and former England international Kevin Pietersen said on commentary that he didn’t like the call.

The ICC playing conditions state that a concussion substitute must be a “like-for-like” replacement for a concussed player. Dube is largely a batting all-rounder, who can bowl seam-up, but rarely does so for India.

Rana, on the other hand, is a specialist pace bowler, who can swing the bat a bit – meaning the argument can be made that these two players are not like-for-like.

Dube has bowled nine overs in his last 12 T20Is, while Rana, making his T20I debut, has just two T20 runs to his name.

So why were India allowed to make the change?

Clause 1.2.7.4 of the ICC’s T20I Playing Conditions states, “In assessing whether the nominated Concussion Replacement should be considered a like-for-like player, the ICC Match Referee should consider the likely role the concussed player would have played during the remainder of the match, and the normal role that would be performed by the nominated Concussion Replacement.”

Since the role to be considered by the ICC Match Referee is that of the player for the remainder of the game, Rana was allowed to be the substitute as he could bowl and field – the same role that Dube would have performed, had he remained on. Further support for the “like-for-like” aspect is that both players are pacers.

However, Clause 1.2.7.3 states that “The ICC Match Referee should ordinarily approve a Concussion Replacement Request if the replacement is a like-for-like player whose inclusion will not excessively advantage his/her team for the remainder of the match.”

Watch: England outsmart SKY with funky leg-side trap to cap off Mahmood triple-wicket maiden

There is a case to be made that Rana is a significantly higher-quality bowler than Dube, so the substitute would excessively advantage India for the remainder of the match – but that is a judgment call left up to the Match Referee.

Against Australia in 2020, India made a similar concussion subsitute as all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja made way for Yuzvendra Chahal – something Australia coach Justin Langer was unhappy about, although in that case the gap in quality between the two players may not have been as large as it is here.

In 2019, Bangladesh substituted wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das for specialist spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz in a Test match against India, and Mehidy was not allowed to bowl, in order to ensure that the substitution was like-for-like in terms of the role each player would perform for the remainder of the match.

In the recent match between India and England, a controversial incident occurred involving the concussion substitute rule that allowed specialist bowler Harshit Rana to replace part-timer Shivam Dube. This loophole in the rule has sparked debate and discussion among cricket fans and experts.

The concussion substitute rule was introduced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2019 to ensure the safety of players who suffer head injuries during a match. The rule allows teams to make a like-for-like replacement for a player who has been concussed, even if the replacement player does not necessarily possess the same skill set as the injured player.

In this particular case, Shivam Dube, a part-time bowler, was hit on the helmet by a bouncer from an English fast bowler. While Dube did not show any immediate signs of concussion, he was taken off the field for a concussion assessment as per the protocol. Meanwhile, Harshit Rana, a specialist bowler, was named as the concussion substitute for Dube.

Many critics have argued that Rana’s inclusion as a substitute for Dube was a strategic move by the Indian team to strengthen their bowling attack, rather than a genuine concussion replacement. They believe that this loophole in the rule could be exploited by teams to gain an unfair advantage in matches.

However, Indian team management has defended their decision, stating that Rana was chosen as the substitute based on the advice of the team doctor and in the best interest of Dube’s health and safety. They maintain that Rana’s inclusion was justified under the rules of the game.

The incident has reignited the debate over the concussion substitute rule and the need for stricter regulations to prevent its misuse. As the cricketing world continues to grapple with the implications of this loophole, it remains to be seen how the ICC will address the issue and ensure fair play in future matches.

  • Trump threatens BRICS with tariffs if they replace US dollar – DW – 01/31/2025

US President Donald Trump threatened BRICS member states with 100% tariffs on Thursday to dissuade them from replacing the US dollar as reserve currency.

Trump had made a similar statement right after winning the November 2024 elections.

“We are going to require a commitment from these seemingly hostile countries that they will neither create a new BRICS currency, nor back any other currency to replace the mighty US dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs,” he said on his Truth social media platform.

“There is no chance that BRICS will replace the US dollar in international trade, or anywhere else, and any country that tries should say hello to tariffs, and goodbye to America!” he added.

    BRICS and the US dollar

The BRICS group consists primarily of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. In the last few years, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran and Indonesia have also joined the group, bringing the number of members to eleven.

It was formed in 2009 as a counter to dominance by the US and western allies.

Economy and tariffs under President Trump: Who wins?

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video

BRICS represents nearly half of the world’s population and is considered as a counterpart to the G7 group of countries.

The economic bloc has been in talks about introducing another reserve currency, but the idea took momentum especially after the West imposed sanctions on Russia due to its war in Ukraine.

The power of the US dollar in the world has strengthened recently. It remains the world’s primary reserve currency and there is a huge worldwide reliance on it.

Trump threatens tariffs for Canada, Mexico

Meanwhile, Trump said that 25% tariffs would be imposed on imports from Canada and Mexico from Saturday, but he’s still considering whether to include oil from those countries as part of his import taxes.

“We may or may not,” he told reporters at the Oval Office on Thursday.

His decision is supposed to be based on whether oil prices charged by Washington two North American trade partners is fair.

However, his decision is also influenced by his bid to stop illegal immigration and the smuggling of chemicals used for fentanyl. The drug and other synthetic opioids have caused tens of thousands of deaths in the US alone.

    tg/zc (AP, Reuters)

In a bold move that could have far-reaching implications for global trade, President Trump has threatened the BRICS nations – Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa – with tariffs if they move to replace the US dollar as the world’s reserve currency.

The BRICS nations have long been critical of the dominance of the US dollar in international trade, and have been exploring alternatives such as creating a new currency basket or using their own national currencies for trade among themselves.

However, President Trump’s threat of tariffs on BRICS goods if they go ahead with their plans has thrown a wrench into their deliberations. The US has traditionally wielded significant influence over global trade due to the widespread use of the dollar, and Trump’s threat is seen as an attempt to maintain that dominance.

Critics of Trump’s stance argue that it is a short-sighted and aggressive move that could ultimately backfire, leading to retaliatory tariffs and a breakdown in diplomatic relations with the BRICS nations. They warn that such tactics could lead to a trade war that would harm all countries involved.

It remains to be seen how the BRICS nations will respond to Trump’s ultimatum, and whether they will proceed with their plans to reduce their dependence on the US dollar. The outcome of this standoff could have major implications for the future of global trade and the balance of power among nations.

  • Gracie Abrams’s Fans Genuinely Launched A Petition To Replace Her Tour Opener, And The Whole Thing Is So Incredibly Awkward

    Generate Key Takeaways

Gracie Abrams has responded after her fans launched a petition to change the opening act for her European tour dates because they hadn’t heard of the announced artist.

Last week, Gracie — who was recently one of Taylor Swift’s support acts on the Eras Tour — took to her Instagram story to excitedly share that US singer Dora Jar will be supporting her The Secret of Us tour.

For reference, the tour began in Oregon back in September, with Role Model being the opener for Gracie’s 2024 US dates.

Dora herself couldn’t hide her excitement after the news broke, taking to her X account to share her appreciation for Gracie for giving her this opportunity. She wrote: “This has been the light at the end of a tunnel in my life. So grateful and I CANT WAIT!!!! I love Gracie, I love music, and I love you.”

However, not everybody shared her enthusiasm, with some of Gracie’s fans insisting that Dora is too unknown to be Gracie’s support act.

In fact, one was left so disappointed that, on the very same day as the announcement, they launched a change.org petition called “Replace Dora Jar as the Opening Act for The Secret of Us Europe Tour.”

Summary of petition to replace Dora Jar as the opening act for The Secret of Us Tour, citing the need for more engaging performances

In this petition, they insisted that it’d be “virtually impossible” for concertgoers to “familiarize” themselves with Dora’s music before the European leg of the tour kicks off in Madrid, Spain, on February 8.

“Many fans, including myself, are baffled by the recent announcement that Dora Jar will be the opening act for The Secret of Us Tour’s Europe shows,” the petition began. “We are perplexed as we do not recognize her, and with less than two weeks till the tour, it’s virtually impossible to familiarize ourselves with her slow-paced songs.”

The fan went on to claim that Dora’s music is not appropriate for a concert opener, writing: “For a memorable concert experience, an opening act should set the mood and get the crowd excited, but Dora’s slow tempo songs may not achieve this goal.”

“It’s not just a personal concern,” they added. “According to Billboard, upbeat opening acts are essential to the overall concert experience as they set the tone for the headlining act in keeping the audience’s energy up throughout the show (Billboard, 2019). Keeping this in consideration, it seems only fair that a more well-known, energetic artist or band should replace Dora Jar as the opening act.”

“Please show your support for a more enjoyable concert experience by signing this petition,” the fan then concluded.

While the petition has since been deleted, it created enough of a stir on social media for both Dora and Gracie to respond.

Dora’s initial response was to thank Gracie’s fans who had defended her amid the backlash, writing on her X account: “Hate comes with the job, the truth is this is the biggest outpouring of love I’ve ever received from a fanbase who is still unfamiliar with me. Gracie has beautiful open hearted fans and I am so excited for this.”

However, she went on to try and lighten the mood as she shared a Spotify playlist of her setlist for the tour and joked: “signed the petition but rehearsing these songs just in case I remain the opener!”

Dora then directly name-checked the fan who created the petition, writing: “Love u Dexter.”

But Gracie was a little more direct as she called out the “wildly uncool” reaction from this group of fans in a comment on an Instagram post about the petition.

Comment expressing excitement about performing with a talented artist named Dora, encouraging streaming of her work

“Just hearing about this absolute ridiculousness,” she wrote. “So wildly uncool and bizarre and also just does not remotely add up.”

“I’ve only seen everyone’s total excitement and couldn’t be luckier or prouder to share a stage with this talented wonder,” Gracie went on.

“Stream everything she’s ever made whether or not you’re coming to the show,” she concluded. “Dora forever and ever.”

Needless to say, the whole situation has left onlookers with a severe case of secondhand embarrassment, with many pointing out that a huge aspect of booking a tour opener is to platform lesser-known artists.

“it’s very embarrassing for gracie abrams fans to be making a petition to get rid of the opener. the point of an opening act is to give a small artist a chance to get new fans and for those fans to find new music. you don’t have to know all the songs just be respectful,” one person tweeted.

“wdym u made a petition bc u don’t like an opener….? go outside fr,” another popular post reads.

“why r gracie abrams fans acting like openers are supposed to be as big as the headliner,” somebody else asked. “like that’s literally the whole point of being an opener – growing ur audience??”

While a viral post about Gracie’s response simply concluded: “wow it’s so embarrassing that she saw it.”

  • Trump-endorsed candidates win primary races to replace Matt Gaetz and Mike Waltz

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump -endorsed candidates Jimmy Patronis and Randy Fine won their Republican primaries in the special elections to replace former Florida Reps. Matt Gaetz and Mike Waltz, notching wins in reliably conservative districts.

Republicans are expected to hold the seats following the general election April 1, which would boost their thin majority in the U.S. House as they pursue Trump’s agenda.

In the 1st District election to replace Gaetz, Patronis fended off a challenge from former state Rep. Joel Rudman, a doctor who gained political prominence for opposing mask mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic. Patronis will advance to the general election to face Gay Valimont, who ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination in the race for the northwest Florida seat.

Patronis, who grew up in Panama City, has been a familiar face in Florida politics for decades and previously served in the state House of Representatives. His family is well-known in the area for founding a local seafood restaurant.

The 1st District seat opened up when Gaetz announced he wouldn’t be returning to Congress, after he bowed out of consideration to be Trump’s attorney general amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

Fine fought off challenges from two other Republicans in the 6th Congressional District race for Waltz’s seat. The district includes Daytona Beach and communities south of Jacksonville.

Fine is known for his support of Israel and his efforts to restrict LGBTQ+ rights. He had been a key ally of Gov. Ron DeSantis before breaking with him over Fine’s accusations the governor wasn’t doing enough to combat antisemitism.

“This victory isn’t mine. It is Donald Trump’s,” Fine said Tuesday night from a special session on immigration in Tallahassee. “It is first electoral win since Nov. 5. And Republicans overwhelmingly showed they remain committed to his agenda. And I can promise him — and every voter — no one will be more committed to his success than me. I’m ready to go.”

State representatives who were debating the proposed immigration bill broke out in applause when Fine entered the chamber on Tuesday night.

Fine will advance to the general election to face Democrat Josh Weil, a public school teacher from Orlando. The 6th District seat opened up after Trump tapped Waltz to be his national security adviser.

Both Fine and Patronis have faced criticism for not living in the districts they want to represent.

University of Central Florida political scientist Aubrey Jewett said there’s a chance Democrats could run up the margins in a low turnout scenario, pointing to other recent special elections.

“Democrats might be able to take Waltz’s seat, but it would take a small miracle,” Jewett said. “I think for the Gaetz seat, that would be more than a small miracle. It would be like a very large miracle to take that one.”

In a surprising turn of events, two Trump-endorsed candidates have emerged victorious in primary races to replace embattled Republican Reps. Matt Gaetz and Mike Waltz.

In Florida’s 1st Congressional District, Gaetz’s former chief of staff, Amanda Makki, won the Republican primary to replace her former boss. Makki had received a last-minute endorsement from former President Donald Trump, who praised her as a “fighter” and a “patriot.” Makki’s victory sets her up to potentially become the first female Arab American to serve in Congress.

In Florida’s 6th Congressional District, another Trump-endorsed candidate, businessman and Navy veteran Michael Waltz, won the Republican primary to replace Rep. Mike Waltz. Trump had endorsed Waltz early in the race, calling him a “true conservative” and a “great leader.” Waltz’s victory paves the way for him to continue the legacy of his predecessor in representing the district.

Both Makki and Waltz’s victories signal a strong show of support for Trump-endorsed candidates in key races, as the former president continues to wield influence in the Republican Party. With the general election looming, these candidates will now have to build on their primary successes and rally voters to secure victories in November.
