  • PETA Wants to Replace Punxsutawney Phil with ‘Weather Reveal’ Cake on Groundhog Day


    PETA is calling for a change to Groundhog Day.

    The organization — which stands for “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals” — shared a news release on Jan. 21, in which they suggested that Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog who predicts whether winter will go on for six more weeks or spring will arrive early, should be replaced with a “weather reveal” cake.

    The vegan treat, PETA said, would mimic that of a sex reveal for a baby. Once cut, the cake would show one of two colors: blue, meaning six more weeks of winter, or pink, indicating an early spring.

    The animal rights advocates added that Punxsutawney Phil and his family should “retire to a reputable sanctuary” instead of taking part in the annual tradition, which takes place on Feb. 2.

    In a letter to The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s president, Tom Dunkel, PETA President Ingrid Newkirk used puns to convey the organization’s plea, writing that letting Punxsutawney Phil retire and be replaced by the cake “would allow you to still make tourism dough while showing Phil a slice of decency.”

    Continuing the play on words, Newkirk said, “Groundhog Day is no piece of cake” for Punxsutawney Phil, detailing that “groundhogs are shy prey animals who, when allowed, actively avoid humans.”

    “Yet, year after year, Phil is transported to Gobler’s Knob, whisked on stage, and subjected to a noisy announcer, screaming crowds, and flashing lights against all his natural instincts,” she continued.

    Added Newkirk: “If approached in his natural habitat, he would run away in fear, not volunteer to live year-round in captivity, unable to do anything that’s natural and important to him like hibernate or burrow — just to be a town’s once-a-year fake meteorologist.”

    PETA has made similar offers to replace Punxsutawney Phil in years past.

    In 2024, the group asked The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club to retire the rodent in favor of a giant coin, while they suggested in 2022 that officials instead use a persimmon tree to predict the weather.

    Two years earlier, in 2020, PETA argued that the animal should be swapped out for an animatronic version that would be equipped with artificial intelligence capable of more accurately predicting the weather.

    Last year, Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring over more weeks of winter.

Most companies I know that use ERP, accounting CRM, HR and other business platforms need them customized, integrated and modified to suit their processes. They have to hire expensive outsiders to do this or hire full time employees. Some of these costs will still be necessary. But as AI continues to mature – over the next few years – many of the software applications written will be done on command and without the need of these humans. But you will still need humans to THINK about what’s best, oversee the development done by an AI bot and then make sure it’s implemented the right way. Hopefully, smart technology implementers will embrace these new tools to help their clients more. And smart companies will hire those implementers for better and quicker results.

    A study by Top10VPN – an independent research group – discovered significant vulnerabilities in VPN tunneling protocols, affecting over 4 million systems. These include VPN servers, home network routers, mobile servers, and CDN nodes. The vulnerabilities are found in IP6IP6, GRE6, 4in6, and 6in4 protocols, allowing attackers to exploit these weaknesses to access networks. Major companies like Meta and Tencent are also impacted.     A report published by IBM – Embedding AI in Your Brand’s DNA – states that AI is set to become a major business driver by next year. The report found that 81 percent of retail and consumer product executives use AI significantly. Investment is expected to surge by 52 percent beyond traditional IT budgets as companies increasingly adopt sophisticated AI applications beyond IT. Executives plan to use AI for integrated business planning, expanding its usage by 82 percent in the coming year. Companies expect that 45 percent of employees will need AI-related upskilling within three years. Additionally, investment in ecosystem platforms will grow significantly. So you better hire IBM for help! Reports like these are interesting and I’m not discounting their responses. But just know that there’s an agenda behind them.

    Though Jar has previously been the supporting act for Billie Eilish and The 1975 on arena tours, and toured in support of her own album this past fall, the petition’s creator — under the pseudonym Dexter Morgan — wrote, “Many fans, including myself, are baffled by the recent announcement … We are perplexed as we do not recognize her, and with less than two weeks till the tour, it’s virtually impossible to familiarize ourselves with her slow-paced songs.”

    They claimed, “For a memorable concert experience, an opening act should set the mood and get the crowd excited, but Dora’s slow tempo songs may not achieve this goal.”

    What’s more perplexing: The petition organizer attempted to source Billboard to strengthen their statement that “upbeat opening acts are essential” at a concert. No citation link was shared, and no previous article appears to have been published on this website with those exact words, or arguing that opinion. (For what it’s worth, you won’t find this Billboard editor demanding upbeat openers.)

    Jar responded politely when discovering the petition’s existence Friday night (Jan. 24).

    “Don’t worry this doesn’t bum me out! I’m hear to perform for all the music loving open hearted fans. those who aren’t interested can go buy merch while I’m playing (but they might as well let me entertain them tho..;)) an overwhelming amount of fans have been so kind & excited,” she said in response to a message spotted on X (formerly Twitter).

    Later she joked, “signed the petition but rehearsing these songs just in case I remain the opener! Love u Dexter.”

    In another message Jar expressed thanks to fans of Abrams who’ve stepped in with words of support: “Hate comes with the job, the truth is this is the biggest outpouring of love I’ve ever received from a fanbase who is still unfamiliar with me. Gracie has beautiful open hearted fans and I am so excited for this.”

    By Saturday, Abrams got word of the ill-mannered petition and spoke out on behalf of Jar.

    “Just hearing about this absolute ridiculousness . . . so wildly uncool and bizarre and also just does not remotely add up. I’ve only seen everyone’s total excitement and I couldn’t be luckier or prouder to share a stage with this talented wonder. Stream everything she’s ever made whether or not you’re coming to the show. Dora forever and ever,” Abrams commented on Stereogum’s Instagram post about the situation.

    Jar’s debut full-length album, No Way to Relax When You Are on Fire, was released in September, featuring the single “She Loves Me.” The album followed two EPs, 2022’s Comfortably in Pain and 2021’s Digital Meadow.

    She first shared the news that she’ll join Abrams on her European trek, which kicks off in Madrid on Feb. 8 and runs through Glasgow on March 12, on Friday (Jan. 24).

    Several high-profile Michigan politicians are vying for the position, as current Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer comes to the end of her second term in the seat. Michigan law states that a governor is limited to serving two terms in office.

    Candidates for the gubernatorial election have begun declaring their intent to run. Here’s a list of who Michiganders could see on the ballot. 

    Jocelyn Benson (D) | Michigan Secretary of State, 2019 – present


    Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson officially declared her candidacy for the governors seat Wednesday. Benson, who has been Michigan’s Secretary of State since 2019, oversaw the 2020 and 2022 general elections, which saw record-breaking turnouts for Michigan voters. 

    Prior to her time in Office, Benson served as the dean of Wayne State University Law School. At the age of 35, she was named the youngest woman in America to serve in the position at an accredited law school.

    Aric Nesbitt (R) | State Senator of Michigan’s 20th District, 2019-present


    Sen. Aric Nesbitt, who represents Michigan’s 20th Congressional District, was elected into office in 2019. In 2023, Nesbitt was named the Michigan Senate’s Minority Leader. He declared his candidacy for the governor position earlier this month. 

    Nesbitt grew up on a dairy farm in Lawton, Mich. He attended Hiillsdale College, and later received the college’s “Distinguished Alumnus” award for his work on conservative reforms in Michigan.

    Mike Duggan (I) | Mayor of Detroit, 2014 – present


    Mike Duggan was elected as Detroit’s mayor in 2013, making him the second longest serving mayor in Detroit’s history. Duggan credits himself with emphasizes much of the revitalization efforts Detroit has seen over the past decade.

    Duggan was  a prosecutor in Wayne County prior to his time in office. 

    Before filing as an Independent, Duggan was a registered Democrat. Duggan was the first politician to declare his candidacy for the governor’s position back in December of 2024. 



    As the 2026 gubernatorial election approaches, speculation is already swirling around who will be vying to replace current Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. With Whitmer unable to run for a third consecutive term due to term limits, several prominent politicians have already been rumored to be considering a run for the state’s highest office.

    One potential candidate is Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, who has been a high-profile figure in Michigan politics for years.     January 21 was an important day. February 1 is going to be even more crucial. Why you ask? Well, Las Vegas Ace’ Kelsey Plum will finally end months of speculations to reveal her future in free agency. Evidently, the team has tried every method possible to convince the 30-year-old, including extending Plum a core qualifying offer (one-year guaranteed deal with a salary equal to the current supermax, which is $249,244 for 2025). But that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s staying put. While many assumed A’ja Wilson would naturally be the primary scorer in Plum’s absence, it seems there could be a top-tier replacement ready already. But before we get to that…

    The dominant emotion in the WNBA landscape all reports toward Plum leaving. “It does seem like the most likely scenario is that Kelsey Plum would move on from the Aces,” Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Callie Fin had said on January 13. The Athletic’s WNBA reporter Sabreena Merchant had opined in January 21, “Kelsey Plum is the first member of the Aces’ core four to hit unrestricted free agency rather than sign an extension during this current era in Las Vegas. The indications are that Plum wants a fresh start, and that could come in Seattle, close to Plum’s college stomping grounds at Washington.”

    Looks like the Aces will have to prepare for the worst. And that shining light, as per many, will be none other than Chicago Sky’s leading scorer, Chennedy Carter.

    Despite Carter’s impressive stats last season—17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.1 steals per game—her future with the Chicago Sky is murky. Her ability to score in isolation was undeniably valuable, but it didn’t mesh with the Sky’s attempts to build an offense around rookie stars Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso.

    Then there’s the locker room factor. According to multiple sources, some Sky players were unhappy with Carter’s behavior behind the scenes. So, where could Carter land? Contributor for The Athletic, Seerat Sohi suggested on The Ringer WNBA Show podcast on January 22, “The Aces could be an interesting destination for [Carter].”  She pointed to the team’s established culture and leadership—especially Wilson, whom she called “one of the best, most stabilizing leaders in sports.”

    According to the reporter, the Aces need a scoring infusion, especially if Plum leaves, and Carter could be just what they’re looking for. “They’re probably going to need a Kelsey Plum replacement. They certainly need a scoring infusion regardless,” the Ringer’s reporter further said.  

    As for Plum, while the core qualifying offer gives the Aces exclusive negotiation rights, it doesn’t guarantee she’ll stay. The team could still trade her, and if the rumors are true, Plum might be eyeing a new start elsewhere. And this could be a big blow for LV Aces. Despite her personal struggles, the guard has averaged just under 19 points per outing and 4.6 assists per game over the past three seasons.

    She is a talented guard capable of playing a pivotal role on offense. Although her void will be felt, the 26-year-old guard could be a good replacement. The No. 4 pick in the 2020 WNBA draft had a strong rookie season, averaging 17.4 points and earning All-Rookie honors. However, her career hit a rough patch after a suspension in 2021 for poor conduct.

    She was traded to the Los Angeles Sparks but struggled with limited starts before being waived in 2023. After a year without a team, Carter signed with the Chicago Sky on a one-year deal. Her performances earned praise, and she played a key role in snapping the Sky’s seven-game losing streak after returning from injury. So even after all the lost time, she still has that ‘X’ factor.

    Experts predict A’ja Wilson’s teammate might go to Golden State

    ESPN WNBA reporter Kevin Pelton believes Plum could be heading to the Golden State Valkyries. In a January 10 article, Pelton predicted that the Valkyries would trade a package, including the No. 5 pick, to bring Plum in as the face of their new franchise. “The Valkyries trade a package including the No. 5 pick to land Plum as the face of the franchise—reuniting her with former Aces assistant coach Nakase, now Golden State’s head coach,” he wrote.

    For the Valkyries, landing a star like Plum would be a massive win. They’re entering their first season and need a player who can draw attention, attract other big names, and help establish their identity. Plum fits the bill perfectly. Not only is she one of the league’s top playmakers, but she also has ties to Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase and player Kate Martin.

    And averaging 17.8 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game this past season, she could power their offense. Even Carter is also predicted to end up in Valkyries but Sohi doubts. The podcaster pointed out, that it’s a risky move for a brand-new franchise. 

    “The Athletic today predicted that she’d end up with the Valkyries. I think that’s probably too big of a risk for a franchise that is in its first season. I think it’s a lot to put on Natalie Nakase’s plate immediately. I’m not sure she necessarily fits there,” she said.

    The cycle kicked off with the New England Patriots hiring Mike Vrabel after moving on from Jerod Mayo after one season, and the Bears landing Ben Johnson after getting rid of Matt Eberflus midseason. The Jets also got their guy in Aaron Glenn after moving on from Robert Saleh after Week 5. The Jacksonville Jaguars are hiring Tampa Bay Buccaneers OC Liam Coen to replace the fired Doug Pederson after letting go of general manager Trent Baalke. 

    Most recently, the Las Vegas Raiders are hiring Pete Carroll, the former Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl champion head coach, after letting go of Antonio Pierce following one full season in charge.

Glenn was drafted by the Jets in 1994 and made two of his three Pro Bowls with the team. 
    Jacksonville Jaguars Doug Pederson Liam Coen The Jaguars did what they needed to do to haul in their top remaining coaching candidate by firing Baalke. Coen coached Baker Mayfield into throwing a career-high 41 touchdown passes, tied for the second-most in the league this season, in his first year working with the journeyman quarterback. Tampa Bay also had a top-five scoring offense (29.5 points per game) in his sole season with the Bucs despite Mike Evans missing three games. Jacksonville hopes to see similar results between Coen and 2021 No. 1 overall draft pick Trevor Lawrence. 
    Las Vegas Raiders Antonio Pierce Pete Carroll Las Vegas flipped from a first-time NFL head coach in Pierce to Carroll, who will be the league’s oldest head coach ever at the age of 74 in 2025. He did arrive in Seattle in 2010 and then guide them to their first Super Bowl title just four seasons later. Carroll’s presence could help stabilize a franchise that has been a volatile organization of late. Raiders minority owner Tom Brady helped hire one of the most known commodities available to kick start his Las Vegas tenure, one in which he’s just as fired up to win as he was in New England.
