  • Report: WVU finalizing deal to make Oklahoma’s Alley defensive coordinator

Report: WVU finalizing deal to make Oklahoma’s Alley defensive coordinator

West Virginia is finalizing a deal to make Oklahoma co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Zac Alley their defensive coordinator according to report.

Pete Thamel of ESPN reported that West Virginia was in the process of finalizing a three-year deal to take over the defensive coordinator spot in Morgantown.

Alley had been the key target of the search.

Alley was hired by the Sooners in January of 2024 but spent the two seasons before that working under Rodriguez as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Jacksonville State. Those ties made him an immediate candidate for the position and his addition gives Rodriguez a strong building block for his initial coaching staff in his return to Morgantown.

Alley had signed a three-year contract with the Sooners which had a base pay of $850,000 this past season and was set to see $50,000 raises in 2025 and 2026. That was a significant jump from the $213,800 that he was under contract for in his final season at Jacksonville State.

That signals a significant investment from West Virginia on the defensive side of the ball.

As the play caller on defense, Oklahoma was ranked 21st in total defense this past season allowing 318.2 yards per game and was tied for 18th in yards per play allowed at just 4.87. The Sooners were ranked 34th in scoring defense permitting just 21.58 points per contest.

During his time at Jacksonville State, Alley’s defense ranked 33rd in scoring defense at 21.2 points per game and 43rd in total defense helping to lead the Gamecocks to a 9-4 overall record in 2023. His unit had success in holding opponents to 2.8 yards per rush, or fourth nationally, was ranked eighth in tackles for loss with 414 and ninth in turnovers gained with 25.

The 2023 Gamecocks defense also held opponents to just 4.8 yards per play, good for 12th nationally and was able to get off the field on third down ranking 22nd in conversion percentage at 32.7.

The 2022 unit led the nation at the FCS level with 15 fumble recoveries and was 11th in red zone defense. The Gamecocks gave up 21 points or fewer in seven of 11 games.

Prior to his arrival at Jacksonville State, Alley was the youngest defensive coordinator in the country at Louisiana-Monroe and improved in every statistical category on defense from the previous season.

Alley also previously served as the co-special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach at Boise State as well as a defensive coaching internship with the Carolina Panthers where he assisted with the linebackers. He got his start as a student assistant at Clemson in 2011 and spent four years in that role working under Brent Venables and graduated from the school.

WVSports.com will have more on Alley in the near future.

According to reports, West Virginia University is finalizing a deal to make Oklahoma’s Brian Odom their new defensive coordinator. Odom has served as the inside linebackers coach for the Sooners for the past three seasons and is known for his aggressive defensive schemes.

This move comes after former WVU defensive coordinator Vic Koenning resigned amid allegations of mistreatment of players. The Mountaineers are hoping that Odom can bring a fresh perspective to their defense and help them improve on their 5-7 record from last season.

Odom is highly regarded in the coaching world and has a proven track record of developing talented defensive players. His hiring would be a big win for WVU as they look to rebuild their defense and compete in the tough Big 12 conference.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

How the Cincinnati Bengals will respond to what has been a lost season despite an MVP-like showing from Joe Burrow could say much about the organization’s future.

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor is right at the center of such a response, of course.

According to Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz, though, the Zac Taylor hot seat watch can slow down — there’s a feeling within the building in Cincinnati that the issues started up at the top.

“One thing about Zac Taylor is that he’s extremely well-liked,” Schultz told Colin Cowherd, “by the people and players that matter in that building. That helps him a lot. What also helps him is the fact that ownership did not give the Bengals the right opportunity to begin this season. They could have paid Trey Hendrickson, but they didn’t. They tagged Tee Higgins. Most importantly, they got to the goal line, the one-yard line with Ja’Marr Chase.”

Well-versed Bengals fans already knew these points. Failing to do a long-term deal with Higgins was expected. Now it seems to be going the other way already because of the failed season.

What wasn’t expected was botching a golden opportunity to get Chase’s big-money extension out of the way. Now the price goes up and they’ll suffer elsewhere on the roster because of it.

Tack on compounding losses of Jessie Bates, DJ Reader and others, plus a miserable track record in recent drafts (first-rounders Myles Murphy and Dax Hill can’t get on the field or have made position changes, etc.) and the miscues to get here have been immense.

What matters now is if this is just chatter or actually spurs organizational change. To their credit, the Bengals have done a good job of modernizing in many ways during the Burrow era.

Whether that next happens to the drafting process and how they pay players while constructing the roster will decide whether the contention window has slammed shut and they have another disgruntled franchise passer or if this was just merely a one-off whoops our bad season.

Either way, it sounds like Zac Taylor is safe.

In a recent report, speculation about the future of Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor has been swirling. According to sources close to the team, Taylor’s fate may be hanging in the balance as the Bengals continue to struggle on the field.

Despite high expectations coming into the season, the Bengals have failed to live up to their potential and currently have a losing record. With each passing game, the pressure on Taylor to turn things around only continues to mount.

Rumors have been swirling that the front office is already starting to consider potential replacements for Taylor if the team’s performance does not improve. While nothing has been confirmed yet, it seems that Taylor’s days as the head coach of the Bengals could be numbered.

Report: Washington State to hire South Dakota State coach Jimmy Rogers

STILLWATER, OK - AUGUST 31: Head coach Jimmy Rogers of the South Dakota State Jackrabbits watches his team against the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the third quarter at Boone Pickens Stadium on August 31, 2024 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Oklahoma State won 44-20. (Photo by Brian Bahr/Getty Images)

One of the most successful coaches in FCS football is heading to Washington State.

According to the Athletic, the Cougars are set to hire South Dakota State coach Jimmy Rogers. He will replace Jake Dickert after Dickert left to take the head coaching job at Wake Forest following Dave Clawson’s resignation.

Rogers took over at South Dakota State ahead of the 2023 season. SDSU went on to win the national title a season ago and lost to North Dakota State a week ago in the FCS semifinals. The loss to the Bison snapped a 29-game win streak against FCS opponents for the Jackrabbits.

Rogers took over as SDSU’s coach following longtime coach John Stiegelmeier’s retirement after the Jackrabbits won the national title at the conclusion of the 2022 season. A former player at SDSU, Rogers has been on the team’s coaching staff since the 2013 season.

At Washington State, Rogers takes over a program that saw success in 2024 following the destruction of the Pac-12. Wazzu started the season 8-1 before losing three straight games to end the regular season. The school then saw the price of success when your power conference no longer exists. Washington State offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle took the same job at Oklahoma before Dickert left. And star quarterback John Mateer entered the transfer portal to join Arbuckle at Oklahoma.

Dickert left Washington State after taking over midway through the 2021 season. The Cougars went 23-20 during his tenure and lost Friday night to Syracuse in the Holiday Bowl to finish the season at 8-5.

According to sources close to the Washington State University football program, the Cougars are set to hire South Dakota State head coach Jimmy Rogers as their new head coach.

Rogers, who has been at the helm of the Jackrabbits for the past five seasons, has compiled an impressive 45-15 record during his tenure. Under his leadership, South Dakota State has become a perennial powerhouse in the FCS, making multiple deep playoff runs.

The decision to hire Rogers comes after former head coach Mike Leach left the program to take the head coaching job at Mississippi State. Washington State athletic director Pat Chun reportedly conducted an extensive search for Leach’s replacement, ultimately choosing Rogers as the best candidate to lead the Cougars into the future.

Rogers is known for his innovative offensive schemes and ability to develop quarterbacks, traits that should bode well for Washington State’s high-powered Air Raid offense. His track record of success at South Dakota State has made him a highly sought-after coaching prospect, and Cougars fans are sure to be excited about the direction of the program under his leadership.

Stay tuned for official confirmation of Rogers’ hiring and more updates on the Washington State football program.

    PRE-GAME REPORT: Oilers at Kings

Arvidsson will now take on his former team in Los Angeles for the first time since signing with the Oilers this past offseason as a free agent, while Saturday’s matinée will also mark Warren Foegele’s first game against Edmonton since joining the Kings.

Foegele posted 45 goals and 50 assists over 231 games in Edmonton and has 18 points (nine goals) in 34 games this season in his first season with LA.

Connor McDavid has posted 16 goals and 26 assists over 32 career games against the Kings. Over 18 career playoff matchups with LA, he has posted a remarkable 36 points over 18 games, including eight goals. Over his last 13 regular season and playoff games against the Kings, he has multi-point games in ten of them.

Including playoffs, Leon Draisaitl is riding a seven-game point streak vs. the Kings in which he has posted six goals and nine assists. All but one of those games were multi-point efforts.

For Zach Hyman, it’s a lot more of the same, scoring seven goals over his last five games against LA which includes a hat trick during Game of their 2024 Playoff series. After a slow start this season, Hyman now leads all skaters with 10 goals in December.

“If you’ve played a long time, you know that it’s about the process and getting your chances and being around it,” Hyman said. “And then, I think you can find confidence in a number of ways.”

Stuart Skinner is expected to start for the Oilers and is 5-1-0 with a .952 SV% and a 1.49 GAA in his last six starts versus the Kings, posting a shutout on Mar. 30. 2023.

Darcy Kuemper is expected to make his first start vs. Edmonton since being traded to the Kings from Washington on Jun. 19. Kuemper has a record of 10-3-4 in 17 games with a 2.48 GAA and a .918 SV% over his career against the Oilers.

The Edmonton Oilers are set to take on the Los Angeles Kings in a highly anticipated matchup at the Staples Center. Both teams are coming off of strong performances in their last games, with the Oilers looking to extend their winning streak and the Kings hoping to continue their recent success.

The Oilers have been led by the dynamic duo of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, who have been lighting up the scoreboard with their offensive prowess. McDavid leads the league in points, while Draisaitl isn’t far behind. The team’s power play has been lethal, converting at a high rate and giving them a significant advantage in close games.

On the other side, the Kings have been getting solid contributions from their top line of Anze Kopitar, Dustin Brown, and Adrian Kempe. Kopitar, in particular, has been a force to be reckoned with, leading the team in scoring and providing strong defensive play as well. The Kings’ goaltending has also been stellar, with Jonathan Quick standing tall between the pipes.

Both teams will need to bring their A-game to come out on top in this matchup. The Oilers will need to focus on shutting down the Kings’ top line and capitalizing on their scoring opportunities. The Kings, on the other hand, will need to limit McDavid and Draisaitl’s chances and play a disciplined game to come out with a win.

It’s sure to be an exciting game between two talented teams. Stay tuned for updates and highlights from the game as the Oilers take on the Kings in Los Angeles. Let’s go Oilers! #OilersvsKings #NHL #HockeyFans.

  • Atlanta Hawks vs Miami Heat: Injury Report

Atlanta Hawks vs Miami Heat: Injury Report

After a thrilling comeback win over the Chicago Bulls last night, the Atlanta Hawks look to finish their homestand against the Miami Heat. Ahead of the game tomorrow, the Hawks released their injury report and it is the same as it has been previously. Trae Young (right heel contusion) is questionable, Bogdan Bogdanovic (left lower leg contusion) is questionable, and Onyeka Okongwu (left knee inflammation) is out. This is going to be the 5th straight missed game for Okongwu.

Young has been questionable for the past two games, but has played, while Bogdanovic has missed the last two games. If Bogdanovic is out, expect Garrison Matthews to remain in the rotation. If Young is out, Vit Krejci might be in line for another start.

Earlier today, the Hawks announced they had signed Daeqwon Plowden to a two-way contract.

Plowden has appeared in 14 games (six starts) for the College Park Skyhawks this season, averaging 14.2 points and 3.7 rebounds in 27.8 minutes. He has netted 10-or-more points in 11 of his 14 games so far this season, including 20-or-more points twice. Plowden was signed by the Hawks on Sept. 27, 2024, before being waived on Oct. 18.

    Undrafted in 2022, the 6-6 guard/forward has appeared in 105 NBA G League contests (28 starts) with College Park (14 games), Osceola (49, 2023-24) and Birmingham (42, 2022-23), owning career averages of 10.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 24.4 minutes (.445 FG%, .378 3FG%, .778 FT%).

Plowden, signed to a two-way contract with the Golden State Warriors on July 16, 2024, and waived on Sept. 24, appeared in eight games (all starts) for the Warriors this past summer during the California Classic and NBA 2K25 Summer League, tallying 14.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 24.5 minutes of action (.470 FG%, .396 3FG%, .714 FT%).

Named to the 2021-22 MAC All-Defensive Team and 2021-22 All-MAC Third Team, the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, native appeared in 154 collegiate games for Bowling Green State University, setting the program’s record for games played.

The Atlanta Hawks will be facing off against the Miami Heat in a highly anticipated matchup. Both teams will be without key players due to injuries, which could have a significant impact on the outcome of the game. Here is the injury report for both teams:

    Atlanta Hawks:
    – Cam Reddish (ankle): Reddish is listed as day-to-day with an ankle injury and is unlikely to play in the upcoming game against the Heat. His absence will be felt on both ends of the court, as he is a key defender and scorer for the Hawks.

    – De’Andre Hunter (knee): Hunter continues to be sidelined with a knee injury and is expected to miss the game against the Heat. His absence will leave a void in the Hawks’ lineup, as he is a versatile forward who can contribute in multiple ways.

    Miami Heat:
    – Victor Oladipo (knee): Oladipo is still recovering from a knee injury and is not expected to play against the Hawks. His absence will be a blow to the Heat, as he is a dynamic scorer and playmaker who can take over games.

    – Markieff Morris (neck): Morris is dealing with a neck injury and is listed as day-to-day. It is uncertain whether he will be able to suit up against the Hawks, but his presence in the lineup would provide a boost for the Heat on both ends of the court.

Both teams will need to adjust their game plans and rely on their depth to make up for the absence of these key players. It will be interesting to see how the Hawks and Heat adapt to the injuries and compete in what promises to be a thrilling matchup.

Jaleel McLaughlin (quad) off injury report for Week 17 – Jaleel McLaughlin News

    Jaleel McLaughlin

by Jordan Epp | Broncos Correspondent | Fri, Dec 27th 2:38am EST

Denver Broncos RB Jaleel McLaughlin is off the final injury report for Week 17 after being listed with a quad injury. (denverbroncos.com)

    Fantasy Impact:

After being limited on Tuesday, McLaughlin was a full participant on Wednesday and Thursday. He should be good to go for Week 17 against the Cincinnati Bengals. After having his best game of the season in Week 13 (15 touches, 84 yards), the dynamic RB saw just 10 touches (on just 15 snaps, 24%) in Week 15 after the bye before missing Week 16 with an injury. Denver’s backfield has been hard to predict down the stretch and there are likely safer options if you’re playing for a title in fantasy.

  • Contradicting Pat McAfee Show Report, Insider Says NFL “Murmurings” Point Mike Vrabel to the Raiders

Contradicting Pat McAfee Show Report, Insider Says NFL “Murmurings” Point Mike Vrabel to the Raiders

On Thursday, Pat McAfee co-host Connor Campbell piggybacked on comments made by ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky and said he believes Mike Vrabel is zeroing in on the New England Patriots as his next coaching destination.

“Word on the street is that Vrabel wants to coach at one place,” Connor Campbell said on Thursday’s show.

“That is very real. Allegedly, Vrabel is very interested in being the head coach of the New England Patriots… I believe that is who Orlovsky was talking about when he said Vrabel might have a place already.”

Vrabel played eight seasons with the Patriots, and it wouldn’t be hard to imagine a scenario where New England would be his preferred destination.

But according to Brian Costello of the New York Post, rumblings around the league are that the Raiders are the team most likely to land Vrabel as their next head coach.

“I think Vrabel is heading for the Raiders,” Costello said on the Gang’s All Here podcast. “That would be my prediction right now is that he’s going to the Raiders because I think the Tom Brady connection there will be strong. That’s where the murmurings in the league have him going. Las Vegas.”

If you are keeping track, Vrabel has now been linked to the Raiders, Patriots and Chicago Bears.

The Bears and Patriots seems to have the better quarterback situations as the moment, but as Costello pointed out, the involvement of Tom Brady could be a factor in where Vrabel chooses to coach next year.

In his first head-coaching stint, Vrabel went 54–45 with the Titans and his tenure in Tennessee came to a surprise end in January of this year. There were rumors that Vrabel didn’t work well with first-year GM Ran Carthon and team owner Amy Adams Strunk.

Whatever led to Vrabel’s firing in Tennessee, it’s a safe assumption that he is going to want to work with a GM and owner he feels comfortable with. It’s unclear what Vrabel’s relationship looks like with Raiders’ owner Mark Davis and GM Tom Telesco, but Brady is expected to be heavily involved with the organization as a minority owner.

It was reported by Pro Football Post in November that Vrabel was the top candidate on the Raiders’ radar if Antonio Pierce is fired and based on Costello’s comments, that seems to still be the case.

The question now is… can Pierce do enough in the final two games of the regular season to hold on to his job and return for a second season with the Raiders?

    x: @raidersbeat

    f

Recent reports from the Pat McAfee Show have suggested that Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel is a top candidate for the Las Vegas Raiders’ head coaching position. However, an insider close to the NFL has revealed that there are “murmurings” within the league that actually point to Vrabel heading to the Raiders.

While the Pat McAfee Show is known for its accurate reporting and insider knowledge, it seems that there may be conflicting information circulating within NFL circles. The possibility of Vrabel leaving the Titans to join the Raiders has sent shockwaves throughout the league, with many questioning the motives behind such a move.

If these rumors are indeed true, it would be a major shakeup in the coaching ranks and could have significant implications for both the Titans and the Raiders. Vrabel has been a successful head coach in Tennessee, leading the team to multiple playoff appearances and establishing a strong defensive identity.

Only time will tell if Vrabel will ultimately make the move to the Raiders, but one thing is for certain: the NFL offseason is shaping up to be full of surprises. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

The meeting of the Cincinnati Bengals and Denver Broncos on Saturday will be the biggest game of the season for both teams. The Bengals can not afford another loss if they want to get into the postseason, and Denver is fighting to stay in control of their destiny.

Thursday brought good injury news for the Bengals.

Offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr. (fibula) will play on Saturday. Brown has missed six of the last seven games dealing with the injury but is back in the fold this weekend.

Wide receiver Tee Higgins (ankle/knee) is questionable. Higgins appeared to injure his ankle in last week’s win over the Cleveland Browns but returned to the game.

Offensive tackle Amarius Mims (ankle/hand) is questionable but reports earlier Thursday said he would be playing through the ankle he has dealt with since Week 5, and he has a broken hand now.

Defensive end Joseph Ossai and safety Geno Stone are both battling illness, but Taylor said he is hopeful they can suit up Saturday afternoon. Neither practiced on Thursday, as there seems to have been a bug going around the locker room in recent weeks.

Sheldon Rankins (illness) will not play Saturday, while defensive end Sam Hubbard (knee) will be out as well.

Tight end Tanner Hudson (knee) is doubtful, while wide receiver Charlie Jones (groin) is questionable.

For the Broncos, running back Tyler Badie (back) is listed as questionable. Everybody else is good to go.

The Cincinnati Bengals are gearing up to take on the Denver Broncos this weekend, and the injury report is in.

Good news for Bengals fans, as offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr is expected to play despite dealing with a knee injury. Brown Jr has been a key piece of the Bengals’ offensive line, and his presence will be crucial in protecting quarterback Joe Burrow against the Broncos’ pass rush.

However, wide receiver Tee Higgins is listed as questionable for the game due to a shoulder injury. Higgins has been a reliable target for Burrow this season, so his status will be one to keep an eye on leading up to game day.

Stay tuned for any further updates on the Bengals vs. Broncos injury report as the game approaches.
