AUS vs IND 2024/25, Australia vs India 4th Test, Day 2, Melbourne Match Report, December 26 – 30, 2024

    Australia 311 for 6 (Smith 68*, Cummins 8*, Labuschagne 72, Bumrah 3-75) vs India

Sam Konstas, the 19-year-old making his Test debut, lit up the MCG with an audacious display of strokeplay against Jasprit Bumrah which in the process riled Virat Kohli on a compelling Boxing Day at the MCG. The world’s best fast bowler still had a significant say with three wickets although it was Australia who edged the honours with their top four all passing fifty.

By stumps, Steven Smith was the key figure in how much further Australia’s first innings would be able to extend as he eyed his second hundred in three innings after Bumrah had sparked a middle-order wobble. Yet it was the opening passage of the Test that could well go down as defining.

Within an hour of his first Test innings Konstas, who became his country’s fourth-youngest men’s player, was the most talked-about figure in the game having brazenly taken 32 off two overs from Bumrah. While he was stopped on 60 off 65 balls, he had already written himself a chapter among the most remarkable debuts and more than repaid the selectors’ desire to provide something different at the top of the order after Nathan McSweeney’s struggles.

Bumrah still pocketed key top-order scalps of Usman Khawaja, the prolific Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh although it did little to downplay talk India are over-reliant on him. The latter two came as Australia lost 3 for 9 in the final session with Akash Deep then claiming a much-deserved wicket with the second new ball when he removed Alex Carey to end the fourth significant partnership of the innings.

Khawaja, Smith and Marnus Labuschagne all brought up half-centuries at more sedate tempos than Konstas. It was the first time since Rawalpindi in 2022 that Australia’s top four had all reached fifty in the same innings. Khawaja and Labuschagne will have been left wondering what could have been but Smith played a vital role in keeping Australia ahead.

But it was all about how the day started. Konstas’ first over in Test cricket was against Bumrah and consisted of four plays and misses. Off his eighth delivery he worked a brace into the leg side to a loud ovation and two deliveries later signaled his intent with an attempt to reverse scoop Bumrah which brought a combination of cheers and gasps.

He missed another an over later and with Mohammed Siraj also troubling Khawaja, Australia were 12 without loss after six overs when Konstas unleashed a passage of play that will never be forgotten. Off Bumrah’s fourth over he scooped to fine leg, reverse scooped for six over deep third and was an inch away from repeating it three balls later.

He had dispatched the world’s leading bowler for 14 but wasn’t done there. In Bumrah’s sixth over he took him for 18, this time by peppering the boundary with drives including lofting a slower ball over wide long-on. By this point, he had been shoulder-checked by Kohli between overs with Khawaja trying to act as peacemaker with all eyes on how the match referee would adjudicate the confrontation.

Not long after, a quickly run two brought up his fifty from 52 balls and he grabbed the Australian emblem on his shirt while pointing to the name on the back. What were you doing as a 19-year-old on Boxing Day? The mind started to wander towards something even more spectacular, but Ravindra Jadeja trapped Konstas lbw in a manner many a more experienced batter has been removed.

The tempo then reverted to something more traditional: the stand of 89 between Konstas and Khawaja took 116 balls, the next of 65 between Khawaja and Labuschagne required 150. The afternoon session started with four consecutive maidens from Bumrah and Akash, the latter again bowling without luck. Both batters had edges fall short of slip and another from Khawaja which bisected the cordon took him to just his second fifty of the year.

India were largely keeping the scoreboard under control but were not overly threatening, only for Khawaja to toe-end a pull against the first ball of Bumrah’s third spell to midwicket which left the bowler a little embarrassed to celebrate.

Labuschagne was still not quite at his fluent best, but was looking as good as he had all series with some delicate glides to third off Jadeja and the types of drives to suggest better days lie ahead for Australia’s No. 3. There was a shift in gears after tea with Labuschagne and Smith adding 41 in the first six overs of the final session against the older ball, although there remained enough assistance from the surface to challenge the batters as another luckless spell from Akash showed.

However, the door was opened for India by offspinner Washington Sundar, who had been brought into the side in place of Shubman Gill, when Labuschagne picked out mid-off with a skimming drive the ball after a drinks break. Labuschagne threw his head back as Kohli took the catch, knowing the chance of a first Test century since last July had gone begging.

Rohit Sharma sensed a moment and immediately brought back Bumrah and against his third delivery Travis Head shouldered arms to one that clipped his off stump. A batter who has caused India nightmares with his attacking strokeplay departed not offering a shot. In Bumrah’s next over Mitchell Marsh, having slotted away one thumping cover drive, edged an expansive pull to continue what has been a lean series after the summer of his life in 2023-24.

As the ground rose for the hats-off commemoration of Shane Warne at 3.50pm (to match Warne’s Test cap number), Smith had slotted consecutive boundaries off Jadeja when Australia looked to be taking control but now his presence was vital in ensuring the innings didn’t lose its way. He and Carey added 53 before Akash produced a terrific delivery from round the wicket. Smith remained firm and walked off to warm applause from those who remained of an 87,242 crowd but it was nothing compared to the ovations earlier in the day.

  • IND Women vs WI Women 2024/25, India Women vs West Indies Women 2nd ODI, Vadodara Match Report, December 24, 2024

IND Women vs WI Women 2024/25, India Women vs West Indies Women 2nd ODI, Vadodara Match Report, December 24, 2024

    India 358 for 5 (Deol 115, Rawal 76, Mandhana 53, Rodrigues 52) beat West Indies 238 (Matthews 106, Campbelle 38, Mishra 3-49, Rawal 2-37, Deepti 2-40, Sadhu 2-42) by 115 runs

The game witnessed two majestic hundreds, from Harleen Deol and Hayley Matthews. Where Deol had support of three other half-centurions in the Indian innings, Matthews had none. And that in a monumental chase of 359 was simply not good enough.
The end result was another one-sided fare that gave India the ODI series with one match remaining, but it was also one where West Indies showed a lot more fight than they did two nights ago. They nearly batted out the 50 overs to take away something from a contest they never looked like bossing at any point.
West Indies’ response to India’s 358 for 5 – their joint-highest ODI total – was circumspect. They batted out three maidens in the first seven overs, two of those to Renuka Singh, who had wrecked their top order with in-swing to finish with a five-for in the first ODI. It underlined West Indies’ approach for large parts of their innings – survival over flamboyance that they’re known for.

As the innings progressed, it became evident how big the gulf was between Matthews and the rest of their batters, who hardly seemed to trust their defense and bat long enough against an Indian attack that boasted of some variety that will give them a welcome headache as they go forward in a World Cup year. Only Deandra Dottin can claim to have received a pearler that she had no answers to as Renuka ripped past her inside edge to flatten the stumps with a superb in-ducker.

Mathews aside, the only other semblance of a fight from the West Indies came from wicketkeeper Shemaine Campbelle, who made 38 in a fifth-wicket stand that was worth 112. Matthews was brutal in her onslaught against India’s spinners, especially legspinner Priya Mishra whom she read from the hand and off the pitch. Against pace, she was quick to pounce on anything short or wide. Yet, it wasn’t until she had crossed 70 that she began to show off her full range of strokes, eventually getting to her seventh ODI hundred off 99 balls. But Matthews’ century only served to merely reduce the margin of defeat.

The story of the day, though, was Deol. Having been on crutches, recovering from a knee injury until five months ago, she repaid the faith the team management had in her by hitting a maiden international hundred from No.3. Dropped on 20 by Dottin at square leg, Deol made them pay. She built slowly to a half-century, reaching there in 62 balls, but shifted gears seamlessly in the end overs to raise her century off 98 balls.

    In Jemimah Rodrigues,
she found an able ally as the pair put on a quick-fire 116-run stand off just 71 deliveries for the fourth wicket in a partnership where they attempted a shot every ball. Rodrigues was outstanding against spin, lofting inside-out over cover, paddling fired-in deliveries past short fine leg, or rocking back to pull. Along the way, she showed her versatility to accelerate as comfortably as she had built the innings. The reward was a half-century off 34 deliveries, before she was out attempting to hit out a waist-high full toss.

Deol fed off that energy, in addition to the confidence from spending time at the crease. In all, India scored 184 in the last 20 overs, compared to the 160 they hit two nights ago. That they achieved this with Richa Ghosh contributing just an unbeaten 13 should give them much encouragement.

Deol’s knock was preceded by a second straight century opening stand from Smriti Mandhana and rookie Pratika Rawal, who looked anything like the nervous version from her debut on Sunday. She came out looking to score quickly. There wasn’t much swing on offer, and Rawal impressed with her intent and strokeplay to set the base of India’s innings after they elected to bat.

At the other end, Mandhana, who became the highest run-getter in women’s ODI this year, simply carried on from where she left off in the series opener. She displayed more than just traces of brute force in muscling spinners. Rawal was comfortably outscoring Mandhana until the eighth over, but it didn’t take long for the India vice-captain to catch up, before overtaking her to raise a 29th half-century and her second straight of the series off just 44 balls. One ball later, the opening pair raised their century stand.

Rawal soon caught up to get to her maiden half-century but missed out on a great chance of converting it to a maiden international hundred, when she was out to a soft dismissal on 76. But in taking two wickets and sending down a few tight overs, and taking an excellent catch inside the ring, Rawal had a day neither she nor the team management will forget in a hurry, not even after having had a role in running out Mandhana, who instead of fuming gave her a pat of encouragement as she walked back.

IND Women vs WI Women 2024/25: India Women vs West Indies Women 2nd ODI, Vadodara Match Report, December 24, 2024

In a thrilling encounter at the Reliance Stadium in Vadodara, India Women took on West Indies Women in the 2nd ODI of the series. Both teams were looking to secure a crucial victory after a closely contested first match.

West Indies Women won the toss and elected to bat first. They got off to a solid start with their openers putting on a good partnership. However, India Women fought back with some tight bowling and excellent fielding to restrict the West Indies Women to a modest total of 220 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their allotted 50 overs.

In response, India Women got off to a brisk start with their top order batsmen scoring freely. Opener Smriti Mandhana played a classy innings, anchoring the chase with a well-compiled fifty. Despite a few hiccups in the middle overs, India Women managed to chase down the target with ease, winning the match by 5 wickets with 10 balls to spare.

Player of the match was awarded to Smriti Mandhana for her brilliant batting performance.

With this victory, India Women have taken a 2-0 lead in the series and will be looking to seal the series in the next match. West Indies Women, on the other hand, will be looking to bounce back and level the series in the upcoming games.

Julia Roberts Once Turned Down A ‘Notting Hill’ Mini-Sequel Due To Script’s Divorce Plot – Report

Notting Hill screenwriter Richard Curtis has, in the past, reunited the cast of Love Actually for short British TV films to benefit the annual Red Nose Day charity. But nothing with Notting, and not for lack of trying.

The screenwriter says in a new interview with IndieWire that Notting Hill star Julie Roberts nixed a potential reunion when she learned that the “mini sequel” would have her Anna Scott character divorcing Hugh Grant’s William Thacker.

Though Curtis says even he is not interested in full-length sequels to the films – “I actually did four Red Nose Days and Comic Relief,” he says. “We did those mini sequels to Love Actually and those satisfied me” – a mini-Notting Hill reunion had been discussed.

“I tried doing one with Notting Hill,” he says in the interview, “where they were going to get divorced and Julia [Roberts] thought that was a very poor idea.

Report: Bears Interested in Pete Carroll Meeting for HC Job amid Rumors of NFL Return | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors

Pete Carroll’s next destination could be the Windy City.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported during the Amazon Prime broadcast of Thursday Night Football that the Bears and Carroll have mutual interest and that a conversation between the two could be happening soon.

“Pete Carroll has interest in the Bears job, but that’s not the only one he is looking at,” Breer said. “I’m told that he has informed all of the teams with openings that he is looking to get back into coaching in 2025. Additionally, I am told that the Bears are interested in sitting down and having a conversation with Carroll about their opening.”

This article will be updated soon to provide more information and analysis.

The Chicago Bears are reportedly interested in meeting with former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll for their vacant head coaching position. Rumors have been swirling about Carroll’s potential return to the NFL after parting ways with the Seahawks earlier this offseason.

Carroll, who led the Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory in 2014, is considered one of the most successful coaches in the league. His defensive-minded approach and emphasis on player development have garnered him respect throughout the NFL.

The Bears are in need of a new head coach after firing Matt Nagy following a disappointing 6-11 season. Carroll’s track record of success and ability to motivate players could be just what the Bears need to turn their franchise around.

While nothing has been confirmed yet, the interest from the Bears in meeting with Carroll is certainly intriguing. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Bucks vs. Nets Preview, Start Time, TV Schedule & Injury Report

Tonight, the Milwaukee Bucks take on the Brooklyn Nets for the third time this season in a game that will likely look quite different than their previous two meetings. The first game, which was right at the beginning of Milwaukee’s 2-8 start, went to the Nets. However, the Bucks took the next game a few weeks ago in an exhilarating finish. What charms will this third meeting have in store?

    Where We’re At

The Bucks recovered well after their post-Cup drubbing to the Cavaliers, banking wins against the Wizards and Bulls. Notably, both wins came without Giannis Antetokounmpo or Damian Lillard (illness), which meant others had to step up. Bobby Portis and Khris Middleton led the charge in both instances for Milwaukee, but key contributions from a host of role players (too many to mention, frankly) have allowed the team to keep winning. While the level of competition hasn’t been overwhelming it is a welcome sight to see the Bucks depth get them through winnable games.

For the Nets, it has been a different story of late. They traded away their key offensive engine, Dennis Schröder, at the first opportunity because, let’s be honest, he was winning them way too many games. To be clear, Brooklyn was faltering before trading Schröder but have dropped three of their last four games without him, losing most recently to the Heat, Jazz, and Cavaliers, while winning against the Raptors. Catch the extended recap from the Heat game here. Down a leading ball handler and creator, the next few weeks in Brooklyn are likely to be focused on more trade market shenanigans rather than gunning for wins. Still, an NBA opponent is an NBA opponent.

    Injury Report

For Milwaukee, Khris Middleton is listed as probable (bilateral ankle surgery). Giannis is listed as questionable (back spasms), as is Damian Lillard (illness). AJ Johnson and Chris Livingston are both out (illness).

Brooklyn’s injury list is quite a bit longer. The following players are out: Bojan Bogdanović, De’Anthony Melton, Cam Thomas, Trendon Watford, and Ziaire Williams. Dorian Finney-Smith and Ben Simmons are both listed as questionable. The tank is truly on.

    Player To Watch

With Schröder gone and Thomas out, the Nets are going to look for new guys to provide scoring. I considered Tyrese Martin, who dropped 30 points against the Suns on 8/10 from three last month. But Martin has been relatively quiet lately, so let’s go with Noah Clowney. The 2023 first-round pick got spot minutes in his rookie year, but has been given much more burn this season. There seems to have been a clear directive from the organisation to turn him into a stretch-five. Clowney raised his three-point attempts from 1.4 last season to 4.9 this season, and he’s making them at a 36% clip. The Bucks must be ready for that.

Is Damian Lillard Playing vs Nets? Full Bucks Injury Report Dropped

Will eight-time All-Star Milwaukee Bucks point guard Damian Lillard be available to suit up for the squad for the first time since the NBA Cup final?

Lillard had been ailing with a calf injury following the team’s 97-81 Emirates NBA Cup championship blowout victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on December 17. But most recently, the 6-foot-2 Weber State product appeared on the team’s pregame injury reports due to an entirely different issue.

Earlier this afternoon, a lengthy NBA injury report cast some doubt about Lillard’s availability due to what’s being called a non-COVID-19 illness. The former seven-time All-NBA honoree is not the only Buck afflicted with whatever this undivulged disease is, as two of his teammates were also either already ruled out or considered questionable.

But maybe the Bucks can survive without him. Sans Lillard and eight-time All-NBA Bucks power forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, a two-time league MVP, Milwaukee blasted the middling 13-17 Chicago Bulls on Monday, to the tune of a 112-91 blowout. While Lillard stricken with the mystery illness, Antetokounmpo has been dealing with back spasms and is officially out.

Swingman AJ Johnson and forward Chris Livingston both had already been ruled out against the Nets at the start of the day with the ailment, though Antetokounmpo and Lillard were merely questionable.

Now, Lillard has officially been listed as out for the contest.

Across his 22 healthy contests for the 16-12 Bucks, Lillard is averaging 25.7 points on .450/.371/.916 shooting splits, 7.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.0 steals a night.

In the Bucks’ Monday win against their Central Division nemeses down I-94, former three-time All-Star small forward Khris Middleton and former two-time All-Defensive center Brook Lopez led the club in scoring with 21 points a piece. 6-foot-10 sixth-man power forward/center Bobby Portis, starting in the stead of Antetokounmpo, notched 19 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists against the team that drafted him.

Point guard Ryan Rollins, starting for Lillard, scored eight points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field (2-of-3 from deep), grabbed five rebounds, swiped a pair of steals, dished out one dime, and blocked one shot.

Rookie Milwaukee power forward Tyler Smith is on assignment with the Bucks’ G League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd, and will miss the Nets clash. Middleton himself is being handled gingerly as he recuperates from bilateral ankle surgery, but will play on Thursday.

Brooklyn shooting guard De’Anthony Melton was traded from the Golden State Warriors after undergoing season-ending left knee ACL surgery, in exchange for future draft equity. He remains roster, but forever out. Veteran forward Bojan Bogdanovic is on the shelf recuperating from a left foot injury.

Shooting guard Cam Thomas (left hamstring strain), swingman Ziaire Williams (left knee sprain) and combo forward Trendon Watford (left hamstring strain) are all also on the shelf for Brooklyn.

More Bucks: Both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard In Danger of Missing Bucks vs Nets Game

Unfortunately, Damian Lillard will not be playing against the Nets. The full Bucks injury report has been dropped, and it looks like Lillard will be sitting this one out. Stay tuned for more updates on his condition and when he might return to the court.
