5 takeaways: Jimmy Butler goes to Warriors in reported multi-player trade
How will Jimmy Butler’s move to the Bay impact the Warriors in 2024-25 and beyond?
• Get NBA League Pass TODAY
• 2024-25 Trade Tracker: Every official dealThe drama is over. And so is Jimmy Butler’s tumultuous season in Miami.
The Heat reportedly sent him to the Warriors for a package of players and picks Wednesday, ending a standoff that began a month ago when Butler became surly over his lack of a contract extension. That forced the Heat to put him on the bench with multiple suspensions, then on the block.
Butler was the Heat’s centerpiece player in the post-Big Three Era of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. The ending was sour, though, and a divorce was the only solution.
With the trade deadline approaching at 3 p.m. ET Thursday, the Heat found a suitor for Butler with time to spare.
Here are five takeaways on the trade and what it means:
1. Warriors desperately try to salvage Stephen Curry’s prime
A generational player was spoiled by success. His coach was antsy. And options were running dry.
So the Warriors chose to roll the dice on Butler mainly because of his playoff history, which is rich with clutch and signature moments — “Playoff Jimmy” and all that.
If Butler can extend that magic with the Warriors, if nothing else it adds meaning to the mid-life crisis being experienced by Curry, who wants to win without leaving town and switching teams. Therefore it made sense for the Warriors to do something, because as long as they have Curry, the belief goes, any gamble is worthwhile. Just get to the playoffs and anything can happen.
And now coach Steve Kerr has a pair of proven postseason performers. Butler helped a pair of otherwise nondescript Miami teams reach the NBA Finals, falling short of a championship both times mainly because Butler didn’t have a capable co-star. And Curry has four championships.
Here’s the issue: Both are moving past their prime. Curry is currently having a sub-par season to his standards — his efficiency suffering especially. As for Butler, his health is a constant concern. Can they overcome those issues come playoff time — assuming of course they qualify for the playoffs — with an assist from Jonathan Kuminga and make a run?
2. Butler’s toughness fits next to Draymond
No longer does Draymond Green need to do the heavy lifting alone. Now he has his twin when it comes to toughness, both mental and otherwise.
Butler takes pride in accepting the challenge of guarding the other team’s best scorer and setting the tone for his team. He was the spiritual leader in Miami, by example and also verbally if necessary. It’s that last part that led to Butler’s exit when he claimed he would’ve been the difference last spring in the playoffs had he been healthy … prompting Pat Riley to reply: If you don’t play, you shouldn’t say.
And that leads to this: Can Kerr, who has his hands full with Draymond, juggle another potentially high-maintenance star?
3. Is this a gamble financially?
Two years and $121 million? That’s the cost of doing business with Butler, who declined his player option for 2025-26 to receive the reported extension. And that’s a chunk to pay someone who’ll be 36 when next season tips and only played 67 or more games once in his career (not including shortened seasons).
Depending on what they can (or can’t) do to re-stock the depth they lost in the deal, the Warriors will essentially be locked into this core for the next two years.
Again: With Draymond, Curry and Butler, the Warriors will be led by three players with plenty of tread on the tires. Plus the competition in the Western Conference is unforgivable.
4. The Wizards impacted this trade … how?
The journey of Butler from Miami to Golden State was virtually assured a few years ago when the Wizards gave Bradley Beal a no-trade clause — on top of a max contract. It was inconceivable then, and certainly now.
Beal, as you know, went to the Suns in their attempt to create a Big Three. And because those formations are now next-to-impossible under the revamped salary cap rules, the team must win, or cut the losses quickly.
The Suns tried to win, and when they failed, Beal had the final say in all deals with his no-trade. Therefore, it proved too tricky to add a third team in any swap with Miami, which didn’t want Beal.
Which left the Suns helpless to get Butler, who wanted Phoenix. Lucky for him, another team came along and gave him the money he wanted. As for the Suns, no such luck.
5. How it helps the Heat, or not
The best part of this deal for Miami? Butler isn’t around to cause any more distractions. As usual whenever there’s a multiple-player deal, the team that doesn’t receive the best player rarely “wins.”
In this situation, it’s a wait-and-see with Miami from a talent standpoint. Andrew Wiggins is a solid defender and younger, and Kyle Anderson can fit any system. As for the protected pick, who knows?
Will any of that help Miami reach the Eastern Conference Finals and two NBA Finals four times, as Butler did?
Again, when assessing the swap, removing a player from the roster who no longer wanted to be there is the best return, for now. Addition by subtraction.

Kings trade De’Aaron Fox to Spurs, acquire Zach LaVine from Bulls in reported deal
The De’Aaron Fox era in Sacramento has come to an end, but the Kings are getting another star guard in return.
The Kings are trading Fox to the San Antonio Spurs while acquiring guard Zach LaVine from the Chicago Bulls as part of a three-team deal, according to multiple reports. ESPN was the first to report the deal Sunday.
Sacramento will also receive three first-round picks from San Antonio (Hornets’ 2025 first-round pick, top 14 protected, Spurs’ 2027 first-round pick; Timberwolves’ 2031 first-round pick) in addition to three second-round picks (Bulls’ 2025 second-round pick; Nuggets’ 2028 second-round pick; own 2028 second-round pick back) and Spurs wing Sidy Cissoko, according to ESPN.

The Bulls will receive forward Zach Collins, guard Tre Jones and the full rights to their 2025 first-round pick back from the Spurs, plus guard Kevin Huerter from the Kings. The Spurs will also acquire guard Jordan McLaughlin from the Kings.
Fox, 27, signed a five-year, $163 million designated rookie contract extension with Sacramento in 2021 and still has one year left on his contract, but the Kings decided to move on from Fox after it became clear he wasn’t going to sign another contract extension.
Fox now joins a Spurs team headlined by first-time All-Star and Defensive Player of the Year favorite Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs currently sit 12th in the Western Conference standings at 21-25, but Fox could help them make a late playoff push this year. They’re two games out of the final play-in spot as of Sunday evening.
The Kings selected Fox with the No. 5 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. In eight years with the Kings, Fox was voted an All-Star once and was named to the All-NBA Third Team for the 2022-23 season.
Fox averaged 21.5 points, 6.1 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game in 514 games with the Kings. He ended the 2023-24 season with the most steals in the league.
LaVine will help offset the loss of Fox for the Kings. He’s in the midst of a resurgent season, averaging 24 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.
The two-time All-Star has been rumored to be on the trade block for multiple years as he’s in the third year of a five-year, $215 million contract. The move will also reunite LaVine with former Bulls teammate DeMar DeRozan in Sacramento, where the duo hope to bring the Kings back to the playoffs. They sit in 10th place at 24-24 as of Sunday.
As for the Bulls, the trade marks a clear sign of the start of a rebuild. Chicago has been in the midst of another middling season, but has recently tailed off, falling to 21-29. It still sits in 10th place in the Eastern Conference standings, though the trade likely puts it in place to land the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, which is widely expected to be Duke star Cooper Flagg.

In a shocking turn of events, the Sacramento Kings have reportedly traded star point guard De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for shooting guard Zach LaVine from the Chicago Bulls. This reported deal has sent shockwaves through the NBA community, as Fox has been a key player for the Kings since being drafted in 2017. The 24-year-old has shown immense talent and potential, but the Kings seem to be looking to shake things up with this trade.
On the other hand, Zach LaVine has been a standout player for the Bulls, averaging over 25 points per game last season. His scoring prowess could provide a much-needed boost for the Kings’ offense, while Fox’s playmaking abilities could greatly benefit the Spurs.
It remains to be seen how this reported trade will impact both teams, but one thing is for sure – the NBA landscape has just been altered in a major way. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Sam Hunt Avoids Charges After Reported Arrest for Alleged Speeding
Sam Hunt will avoid charges after he was reportedly arrested for alleged speeding outside of Nashville.
The country singer, 40, was arrested and taken to jail on Jan. 20 for allegedly speeding and violating an interlock device, which prevents drivers from starting their vehicles unless they pass a breathalyzer test, TMZ reported. He was released the same day on $1,500 bond, according to the outlet. It remains unclear just how Hunt violated the device.
A rep for Hunt tells PEOPLE that the singer’s lawyer cleared the paperwork in court this week, and the star will not face charges.
A spokesperson for the Henderson Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
The incident comes more than five years after Hunt was arrested in Nashville on charges of driving under the influence and possessing an open container in November 2019. The “Body Like a Back Road” singer was taken into custody after police responded to a call of a vehicle driving the wrong way down the road, and his blood alcohol content level at the time was .173.

Hunt pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges related to the arrest in 2021, and he was ultimately sentenced to 48 hours at the DUI Education Center, an alternative facility and required to complete an alcohol safety course. The star also lost his license for a year, and his car was to have an interlock installed until he got his license back.
“It happened,” Hunt said of the arrest to HITS Daily Double in 2020. “People in my camp were talking about suppressing it, but why would I be afraid to talk about it? If it happens, it’s true. I was raised and taught to respect [alcohol]. Moderation is important. I’ve never wanted to glorify it. It’s a cheap trick in country music, and I’ve always wanted to avoid that. I don’t like using [drinking] as a party song; for me, that wouldn’t be honest. I’ve never been the guy who shotguns a beer. I know people who partake that way, and I wouldn’t want to shake my finger or look down on them.”

He continued, “It’s not that I don’t drink at all, but I put myself in a position by being out, seeing friends at a show, leaving my phone in an Uber. We’d Uber’d all night, then went back to a friend’s house, had some pizza. I fell asleep on the couch, woke up groggy. I should’ve been more conscious, but I wasn’t. So I take responsibility.”
In November, Hunt and his wife Hannah, who married in 2017, announced that they’re expecting their third child. The pair are parents to daughter Lucy Louise, 2½, and son Lowry Lee, 14 months.
“It’s about to get real,” he said on Audacy’s Katie & Company podcast of baby No. 3. “I’m elated, can’t wait!”
Hunt also said he hoped to take a break from touring “in the next couple years” in order to spend more time with his family.
Country singer Sam Hunt has avoided charges after being reported for alleged speeding in Nashville earlier this week. The “Body Like a Back Road” singer was pulled over by police for allegedly driving over the speed limit, but no charges were filed against him.Hunt, who has had his fair share of legal troubles in the past, including a DUI arrest in 2019, seemed to have luck on his side this time around. Fans of the country star were relieved to hear that he would not be facing any further legal repercussions for the incident.
While Hunt has yet to comment on the situation, it seems like he will be able to continue focusing on his music career without any distractions. Hopefully, this close call will serve as a reminder for the singer to drive safely and responsibly in the future.

Jets Reported Interested In Ex-NFL QB For Offensive Coordinator Job
A dark-horse candidate has emerged for the New York Jets’ offensive coordinator vacancy.
Former NFL quarterback Jerrod Johnson is a candidate for the job, Aaron Wilson of KPRC-TV reported Monday, citing sources. Johnson, who spent the last two seasons as the Texans’ quarterbacks coach, also is a candidate for Houston’s offensive coordinator vacancy after the franchise fired Bobby Slowik.
“Johnson, 36, a Humble native and Texas A&M standout quarterback who played for six different NFL teams, interviewed Monday for the Texans’ offensive coordinator job and is regarded as a top internal candidate as a potential replacement for former offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, according to league sources,” Wilson wrote.
“The New York Jets, now coached by Houston native and former Texas A&M All-American cornerback Aaron Glenn, are also expected to pursue an interview with Johnson, per sources.”
Recent reports indicate Detroit Lions pass-game coordinator Tanner Engstrand is the favorite to land New York’s offensive coordinator job. Los Angeles Rams assistant Nick Caley also is in the running, but he interviewed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday and hadn’t met with the Jets as of this writing.
Johnson spent six seasons in the NFL, enjoying stints with the Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys. He never appeared in an NFL game.
Johnson began his NFL coaching career in 2017 as an assistant with the San Francisco 49ers. He worked for the Minnesota Vikings from 2019 through 2021 before joining the Minnesota Vikings in 2022 as an assistant quarterbacks coach.
Of course, the biggest story surrounding the Jets is the future of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who’s status for next season remains unclear.
More NFL: Aaron Rodgers Rumors: What Aaron Glenn Said About QB’s Future During Jets Interview
According to recent reports, the New York Jets are considering former NFL quarterback Josh McCown for their offensive coordinator position. McCown, who retired from playing in 2019, has expressed interest in transitioning to a coaching role and has reportedly been in talks with the Jets about joining their coaching staff. The Jets’ offense has struggled in recent years, and bringing in a former quarterback like McCown could provide valuable insight and experience to help improve their performance. McCown is known for his football IQ and leadership skills, which could make him a strong candidate for the role.
While nothing has been confirmed yet, the potential hiring of McCown as offensive coordinator has generated excitement among Jets fans who are eager to see improvements in their team’s offense. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

ATLANTA – The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) has confirmed the first case of measles in the state for 2025. The infected individual, an unvaccinated metro Atlanta resident, contracted the virus while traveling within the United States and was infectious between Jan. 19-24.
What we know:
Health officials are working to identify anyone who may have been exposed during this period. Measles is highly contagious, spreading through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can linger in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours after the infected person leaves the area.
Measles Symptoms and Prevention
What they’re saying:
Symptoms of measles typically appear 7 to 14 days after exposure and include high fever, cough, runny nose, and watery eyes. A red, spotty rash then develops, starting at the head and spreading to the rest of the body.
The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is the most effective protection against the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends children receive their first dose of the MMR vaccine between 12-15 months of age and a second dose between 4-6 years old. A single dose of the vaccine provides immunity for over 95% of recipients, with a second dose boosting immunity to 98%.
What to Do if You Have Symptoms
What’s next:
Individuals experiencing measles symptoms should immediately contact their healthcare provider but are advised not to visit clinics, hospitals, or public health offices without calling ahead to prevent exposing others. Healthcare providers are urged to notify public health officials if they suspect a case of measles.
This case is the first confirmed in Georgia this year, following six reported cases in 2024. There were 284 cases reported nationwide in 2024. Public health officials are emphasizing the importance of vaccination to prevent further spread of the disease.
The Georgia Department of Public Health has confirmed the first case of measles in the state for the year. Measles is a highly contagious virus that can lead to serious complications, especially in young children and those with weakened immune systems. The individual who was diagnosed with measles had not been vaccinated, highlighting the importance of vaccination in preventing the spread of this disease. The Georgia DPH is urging residents to make sure they are up to date on their vaccinations to protect themselves and others from measles.
Measles outbreaks have been on the rise in recent years, with several states across the country reporting cases. It is crucial for individuals to take precautions to prevent the spread of measles, including getting vaccinated and practicing good hygiene.
The Georgia DPH is working to identify and notify anyone who may have come into contact with the individual diagnosed with measles. If you believe you or someone you know may have been exposed to measles, it is important to seek medical attention and take necessary precautions to prevent further transmission.
Stay informed and stay safe, Georgia. Vaccination is key in protecting yourself and your community from measles and other preventable diseases.

More mysterious drone sightings reported in the Northeast after FAA lifts ban
More mysterious drone sightings have been reported in the Northeast in a strange surge after the Federal Aviation Administration lifted its temporary flight restrictions following thousands of reported drone sightings late last year.
The sightings last year, reported in November and December in New York, New Jersey and other nearby states, prompted airport closures, led to arrests and triggered calls from lawmakers and the FAA for more oversight.
The sightings appeared to slow down after the FAA in December imposed temporary flight restrictions on drone flights in New Jersey and New York that lifted in some areas Jan. 19.
Since the restrictions lifted, more reports of sightings from Connecticut to New Jersey have emerged.
Enigma Labs, a research company studying unidentified phenomena, has tallied 650 sightings nationally described as drone-related since November, with the most concentrated in the Northeast.
Enigma reported a drop in report numbers immediately following the ban. But just this month, it received 49 reports in New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Virginia — 14 of which came after the flight bans expired.
“You look at the reports that people are submitting. They’re saying, you know, ‘I’m still seeing them, ban or no ban, and they’re happening,’” Enigma spokesperson Christine Kim told NBC’s “TODAY” show Monday.
Enigma shared videos sent in by locals showing lines of flashing red lights beaming in the night sky, many close to one another over neighborhoods.
On Sunday, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., confirmed the return of the drones at an unrelated press conference in New York.
A possible drone Dec. 22 in Clinton Township, N.J. Christopher Stadulis “We have now seen new drone sightings. We’re going to have to look into it,” he said.
President Donald Trump also addressed the sightings on his first day back at the White House, saying: “I would like to find out what it is and tell the people.”
The FAA hasn’t confirmed the new sightings, but said that it’s responsible for ensuring drones operate safely within the broader National Airspace System.
The FBI referred NBC News to a statement jointly released with the FAA and the Department of Homeland Security on Dec. 16 that said the FBI received more than 5,000 reported drone sightings tips in the few weeks prior, with “100 leads generated” for investigation. The agency said that it sent advanced detection technology and trained visual observer to the region.
However, the FBI said nothing “anomalous” was identified among the tips, nor any national security or public safety risk over the civilian airspace in the Northeast.
“We assess that the sightings to date include a combination of lawful commercial drones, hobbyist drones, and law enforcement drones, as well as manned fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and stars mistakenly reported as drones,” the agencies said in that statement.
Late last month, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul called for legislation to regulate drones in the skies.
“While we have not detected any public safety or national security threats, we will continue aggressively monitoring the situation as we call on Congress to pass legislation to give states and local law enforcement the authority and resources they need to manage this evolving technology,” she said.
In recent weeks, multiple reports of mysterious drone sightings have been reported in the Northeast region of the United States. This comes after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently lifted a ban on drone flights in the area.Residents in states such as New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania have reported seeing unidentified drones flying at night, sometimes in formation or hovering in the sky for extended periods of time. Some witnesses have described the drones as being larger than typical consumer drones and flying at altitudes much higher than permitted by FAA regulations.
While some speculate that these sightings could be related to military or government operations, others believe that they could be the work of private individuals or groups conducting unauthorized drone flights. The FAA has urged anyone with information about these sightings to come forward and report them to local authorities.
The sudden increase in mysterious drone sightings has raised concerns about airspace safety and privacy. As authorities work to investigate these incidents, it is important for drone operators to follow all regulations and guidelines set forth by the FAA to ensure safe and responsible drone use.

First outbreak of rare bird flu strain reported at California poultry farm | California
The first outbreak of a rare bird flu in poultry has been detected on a duck farm in California, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) said on Monday.
Authorities said the discovery of H5N9 bird flu in poultry came alongside the detection of the more common H5N1 strain on the same farm in Merced county, California, and that almost 119,000 birds on the farm had been killed since early December.
“This is the first confirmed case of HPAI H5N9 in poultry in the United States,” the US Department of Agriculture said in the report to the WOAH.
“The USDA animal and plant health inspection service (APHIS), in conjunction with state animal health and wildlife officials, are conducting comprehensive epidemiological investigations and enhanced surveillance in response to the HPAI related events,” it added.
Highly pathogenic bird flu (HPAI) is of rising concern to epidemiologists. The US National Library of Medicine lists H5N9 as a subtype avian influenza virus.
“Whether this novel H5N9 virus will cause human infections from its avian host and become a pandemic subtype is not known yet,” it warns on its website. “It is therefore imperative to assess the risk of emergence of this novel reassortant virus with potential transmissibility to public health.”
Bird flu has spread around the globe in recent years, leading to the culling of hundreds of millions of poultry. It also spread to dozens of mammal species, including dairy cows in the US, and killed a person in Louisiana earlier this year.
H5N1 avian flu in spreading in US cattle herds and poultry stocks, with the US Department of Agriculture reporting that more than 13,000,000 birds were affected in the last 30 days across all 50 states by the flu. H5N1 bird flu has infected or killed 136m birds since the outbreak began in 2022.
That has led to rising prices for eggs. The US Bureau of Labor statistics says that in September 2023, the average price for a dozen Grade A eggs was just over $2. Now more than a year later, the data shows that price has more than doubled to $4.16 in December 2024.
An avian flu outbreak at a duck farm on New York’s Long Island was reported last week with federal officials ordering the destruction of the operation’s entire 100,000 flock. The farm had been in operation since the 1640s.
Bird flu outbreaks are also increasing within dairy herds, with more than 900 herds infected across the US and 67 people infected. The increases do not yet suggest that a human pandemic is inevitable, but authorities are concerned about bird flu in domestic cats.
According to a study published last year in the academic journal Emerging Microbes and Infections, cat H5N1 genomes had unique mutations that could suggest “potential virus adaptation”. It found cats could “serve as mixing vessels for reassortment of avian and mammalian influenza viruses” as well as act as a “bridge” to infect other species.
The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says that “while the current public health risk is low, CDC is watching the situation carefully and working with states to monitor people with animal exposures”.
In a recent development, the first outbreak of a rare bird flu strain has been reported at a poultry farm in California. The strain, known as H5N8, is highly contagious and can spread rapidly among birds.Authorities are taking swift action to contain the outbreak and prevent it from spreading further. Measures such as culling infected birds, disinfecting the farm, and implementing biosecurity protocols are being put in place to control the situation.
The California Department of Food and Agriculture is working closely with local officials and poultry farmers to monitor the situation and prevent any potential human infections. While the risk to humans is currently low, it is important to take precautions and avoid contact with sick or dead birds.
This outbreak serves as a reminder of the importance of biosecurity measures in preventing the spread of bird flu strains. Farmers and poultry owners are urged to be vigilant and report any signs of illness in their birds to authorities. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation.
