  • Spectator killed after hammer reportedly goes out of bounds at high school track and field meet in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – A spectator at a high school track and field meet was killed after an athlete’s hammer reportedly went out of bounds Sunday morning.

UCCS, which hosted the meet, said it was heartbroken over what it called a “horrible accident.”

“We are heartbroken at this horrible accident and are focused on supporting all involved,” said UCCS Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet in a statement obtained by 11 News.

According to UCCS, the student’s hammer was thrown past the certified barriers, hitting a spectator sitting in the stands.

“A member of the attending audience was killed when a hammer thrown by a participant cleared certified barriers and struck him. The Colorado Springs Fire Department responded, provided medical care and ultimately pronounced the audience member dead at the scene. Members of the UCCS Police Department and Colorado Springs Police Department were on scene,” UCCS said.

The university has not identified the victim, including whether the victim was a parent or other relative, but an 11 News viewer shared a statement they said they got from Colorado United Track Club.

The message sent to that viewer also said officials were working with District 12 social workers to determine how to best support students who attended the event as well as the families involved.

We will continue to update this story as we learn more.

  • Mike Vrabel, Patriots Reportedly Hire Respected Offensive Assistant

The Patriots continue to bolster their offensive coaching staff, and their latest hiring is an impressive one.

New England is hiring Thomas Brown as its tight ends coach/pass game coordinator, as first reported by MassLive’s Mark Daniels. Both ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero confirmed Daniels’ report.

Brown interviewed for the Patriots offensive coordinator job, which went to veteran play-caller Josh McDaniels.

Brown served on the Chicago Bears staff in 2024 where he was hired as a pass-game coordinator before he was elevated to interim offensive coordinator and interim head coach. Brown’s elevations followed the firings of Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron on Nov. 12 and Chicago head coach Matt Eberflus two weeks later.

Prior to his stint in Chicago, Brown worked for the Carolina Panthers in 2023. He was hired as the Panthers offensive coordinator under then-head coach Frank Reich, another respected offensive mind. When Reich was fired in late November, Brown took over play-calling duties.

    Story continues below advertisement

Brown got his start under Rams head coach Sean McVay when he served as a running backs coach. He was promoted to assistant head coach and tight ends coach in his third season with the team.

Brown’s arrival means the Patriots have another experienced offensive assistant, and someone who’s coached in multiple offensive systems like McVay’s West Coast scheme.

The New England Patriots have reportedly added a respected offensive assistant to their coaching staff in the form of Mike Vrabel. Vrabel, who previously served as the head coach of the Tennessee Titans, is known for his innovative offensive schemes and ability to develop young talent.

This move comes as the Patriots look to bolster their coaching staff and revamp their offensive game plan for the upcoming season. Vrabel’s experience and knowledge of the game are sure to be valuable assets to the team as they aim to make a deep playoff run.

Fans are excited to see what Vrabel can bring to the Patriots’ offense and are hopeful that his hiring will lead to an improved performance on the field. With Vrabel on board, the Patriots are poised to be a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming season.

  • Thomas Brown, Patriots reportedly discussing role on offensive coaching staff

FOXBORO — The New England Patriots interviewed Thomas Brown for their offensive coordinator position before ultimately going back to Josh McDaniels for a third time. But there could still be a spot for Brown on Mike Vrabel’s coaching staff.

The Patriots and Brown are reportedly still discussing a role for him on McDaniels’ offense, according to ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss.

“The Patriots had interviewed interim Chicago Bears head coach Thomas Brown for their offensive coordinator job that ultimately went to McDaniels, but Brown is still in talks with the team to potentially join the staff in a different role, according to league sources,” Reiss reported in his Sunday notes column

    Who is Thomas Brown?

Brown, 38, is coming off an interesting year with the Chicago Bears. He was hired ahead of the season to be the team’s pass game coordinator, but was promoted to the team’s offensive coordinator when Shane Waldron was fired on Nov. 12. He was only in that position for a few weeks, as he was promoted again to head coach when Matt Eberflus was fired on Nov. 29 after a 4-8 start o the season.

Brown was 1-4 as head coach of the Bears, and earned his only win in Week 18 over the Green Bay Packers.

Prior to joining the Bears, Brown was the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers in 2023. The Panthers and the Patriots were tied for last in the NFL at 13.9 points per game in 2023.

Brown was on Sean McVay’s staff with the Los Angeles Rams from 2020-2022 as a running backs coach, tight ends coach, and assistant head coach. He was both a running backs coach and assistant head coach when the Rams won Super Bowl LVI over the Cincinnati Bengals at the end of the 2021 season.

Before breaking into the NFL with the Rams, Brown spent nearly a decade as a college coach at Georgia, Chattanooga, Marshall, Wisconsin, Miami, and South Carolina. Brown also played three seasons in the NFL as a running back for the Atlanta Falcons and Cleveland Browns, though he never saw any action in a game.

Brown could potentially become the pass game coordinator or running backs coach in New England.

    Mike Vrabel’s Patriots coaching staff

Vrabel has filled his three coordinator positions in New England, as was announced by the team last week:

    Offensive coordinator: Josh McDaniels
    Defensive coordinator: Terrell Williams
    Special teams coordinator: Jeremy Springer

Former Browns coach Ashton Grant was reportedly brought in to be New England’s new quarterbacks coach, while Tony Dews and Riley Larkin were also reportedly added to the offensive staff in unspecified roles. The Patriots have not yet confirmed or announced those hirings.

Zak Kuhr, Clinton McMillan, and Kevin Richardson have reportedly joined Vrabel’s defensive staff under Williams, though those have not been announced by the team yet either.

According to recent reports, Thomas Brown and the New England Patriots are in discussions about a potential role on the team’s offensive coaching staff. Brown, who has a strong background in coaching and player development, could bring a new perspective and fresh ideas to the Patriots’ offense.

Brown has spent time with various college football programs, including Georgia, Miami, and South Carolina, where he has been praised for his ability to develop young talent and maximize players’ potential. His experience working with high-caliber athletes could be a valuable asset to the Patriots as they look to fine-tune their offensive strategy for the upcoming season.

While nothing has been confirmed yet, the potential addition of Thomas Brown to the Patriots’ coaching staff has sparked excitement among fans and analysts alike. With his track record of success and innovative approach to coaching, Brown could play a key role in helping the Patriots reach their offensive goals in the coming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Russian Leader Putin Reportedly Worried With Economic Wartime Issues

    • Vladimir Putin is increasingly concerned with economic issues in the country, according to a Reuters report.
    • Russia is facing stagflation risk, sanctions, and labor shortages as its war in Ukraine drags on.
    • A source told the outlet that Putin considers Russia’s wartime goals in Ukraine as already met.

Russian President Vladimir Puting isn’t feeling as upbeat about the prospects for Russia’s economy as the conflict in Ukraine intensifies and sanctions create domestic challenges with no easy solution.

Sources told Reuters that the leader is increasingly concerned about the country’s wartime economy, which is strained by labor shortages, sanctions, high inflation, and weakening domestic activity.

According to the sources close to the Kremlin, the president has privately acknowledged the war’s strain on the economy, specifying “really big problems.”

At a December 16 meeting with business leaders, Putin criticized top economic officials and was reported to be clearly displeased by rising borrowing costs faced by Russian businesses.

Restrictive credit costs have upset corporate leaders in the country, as interest rates have hit a historic 21%. Despite criticism and stagflation warnings voiced by Russia’s biggest business leaders, the central bank has had no choice but to tighten policy as inflation keeps rising. On an annual basis, price growth hit 9.5% at the end of 2024.

That’s been driven heavily by massive wartime spending. Defense and security spending is expected to account for over 8% of GDP and 40% of all government expenditures in 2025. The war has also deepened a worker shortage, pushing up wage prices and slashing skilled labor in the economy.

Sources told Reuters these difficulties have fostered a willingness to reach a negotiated settlement with Ukraine, at least among some of Russia’s elite.

One source noted that Putin already considers wartime objectives as being met, including the control of land linking Russia to Crimea. The Russian president is reportedly open to ceasefire discussions, with two caveats, Reuters said — Russia maintains its territorial gains, and Ukraine ends its bid to join NATO.

So far, plans previously backed by US President Donald Trump did not account for the second stipulation and have been dismissed by Moscow.

Now in power, Trump recently threatened to bolster tariffs and sanctions on Russia if a peace deal isn’t reached soon. Although trade between the countries has dwindled substantially since the war began — Russian goods accounted for just 0.14% of total US imports in 2023 — sanctions have proven detrimental to Russian revenue, particularly from its energy trade.

Outlooks vary on how long the economy can keep fueling the war in Ukraine. While one think tank suggested that Russia can support itself for up to five years, others have said that the economic pain could end the conflict this year.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is reportedly feeling the pressure of economic wartime issues, according to recent reports. With escalating tensions on the world stage and economic sanctions taking a toll on Russia’s economy, Putin is said to be concerned about the impact on the country’s financial stability.

As global conflicts continue to intensify, Putin is facing challenges in maintaining Russia’s economic growth and stability. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, along with strained relations with Western countries, has led to economic sanctions that are squeezing Russia’s economy.

Putin’s worries come at a time when Russia is already grappling with inflation, a weakened ruble, and a struggling energy sector. The Russian leader is facing tough decisions on how to navigate these economic challenges while also dealing with international pressure and military threats.

It remains to be seen how Putin will address these economic issues and whether he will be able to steer Russia through this turbulent period. The repercussions of these economic concerns could have far-reaching implications for both Russia and the global economy.

  • NFL reportedly expected to expand replay assist, including for plays like Patrick Mahomes’ controversial slide

Broadcaster Troy Aikman said the NFL had to address penalties like the one Patrick Mahomes drew with his controversial slide last weekend. It looks like he’s getting his wish.

The league is expected to expand replay assist this offseason into plays that could include the quarterback slide, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Replay assist, in which remote officials help with on-field calls, was instituted before the 2021 season and expanded before the season to cover situations such as fouls for hits in players heading out of bounds, blows to the quarterback’s heads and intentional grounding. This would add the quarterback slide to the mix, and Mahomes provided quite an impetus during the divisional round against the Houston Texans.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback drew headlines when he scrambled, slid and drew contact from two defenders, drawing an unnecessary roughness penalty despite receiving little contact.

Aikman didn’t like it, ESPN rules analyst Russell Yurk didn’t like it, the NFL’s broader fan base didn’t like it and the Texans definitely didn’t like it.

    Aikman’s reaction:

“Oh, come on … He’s a runner. I could not disagree with that one more and he barely gets hit. That’s the second penalty now that’s been called against the Texans.

“They’ve got to address it during the offseason. You can’t, as a quarterback, run around and play games with the defenders and then be able to draw penalty.”

He continued harping on Mahomes attempting to draw a flag later in the drive, which saw the Chiefs score a touchdown in a 23-14 win. Mahomes later said “I probably shouldn’t have done that” on a play he was criticized for flopping.

As Aikman mentioned, the flag Mahomes drew was one of multiple controversial calls against the Texans that game, continuing a longstanding debate over whether the Chiefs receive favorable treatment from the officials because of Mahomes’ status, not unlike Tom Brady before him.

However, while the NFL is saying it might rework how it handles plays like the Mahomes slide, NFL officiating and rules analyst Walt Anderson stood by the actual call this week, saying that because Mahomes’ helmet moved on the play, it warranted an unnecessary roughness penalty. However, he also acknowledged there would be “conversations” this offseason over how such penalties are called.

Flags involving Patrick Mahomes were once again a narrative last week. (Photo by Perry Knotts/Getty Images)

Quarterback slides have become a controversial area of rules in recent years, with Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen also standing as a model for fake slides. Any fan base is going to be infuriated when a quarterback gets an extra 15 yards for middling contact, or a different quarterback fools their defense by exploiting a rule, but the NFL is always going to err on the side of protecting its most valuable position.

Anyway, the Chiefs and Bills are scheduled to kick off the AFC championship game at 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday.

The NFL is reportedly planning to expand replay assist to include plays like Patrick Mahomes’ controversial slide, according to recent reports. This move comes in response to the increasing scrutiny and criticism surrounding officiating decisions in the league, particularly in high-stakes games.

The controversial slide by Mahomes in a recent game sparked a debate about the need for more replay assistance to ensure accurate and fair calls. The expansion of replay assist is aimed at providing officials with more tools to make better and more informed decisions, ultimately improving the overall integrity of the game.

While some may argue that this could slow down the pace of the game, others believe that the benefits of getting calls right far outweigh any potential drawbacks. With technology constantly improving, it only makes sense for the NFL to utilize all available resources to ensure that the outcome of games is determined by the players on the field rather than by human error.

As the league continues to evolve and adapt to the ever-changing landscape of professional sports, it will be interesting to see how this new replay assist system impacts the game and the fan experience. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • “Dr Phil will be playing Oprah” — Hilarious memes erupt as Britney Spears reportedly picks Selena Gomez as her top choice for biopic

    https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=1JvNGV_0yPtDwqu00

Britney Spears is focused on her biography these days, assessing the apt actress to portay her on screen. Selena Gomez and Natalie Portman are reportedly the front-runners, according to a blue-tick X post by Buzzing Pop , though the information is yet to be officially confirmed.

Britney Spears’ life in the limelight has had all the ingredients for a heady biopic, from fame and controversy to intense scrutiny, personal hardships, and a fierce fight for freedom. Fans and critics are excited alike about filmmaker Jon M. Chu’s plans to adapt Spears’ memoir, The Woman in Me, for the screen.

As the argument gains ground over who would be the perfect Britney on screen — pop queen Selena Gomez or feted actress Natalie Portman — social media, not surprisingly, has also exploded with memes and wisecracks.

    A user named @roseColoredSass wrote on X:

“Next, Dr Phil will be playing Oprah .”

Dr Phil McGraw or Oprah Winfrey would perhaps dismiss that comment in jest, but the choice for Britney’s role won’t be an easy one, though. The actress in question would have to do more just mimic her dance steps or style. The essence would lie in portraying the emotional depth about pop sensation Spears.

Responses to the unconfirmed report of the choice being a toss-up between Selena Gomez and Natalie Portman has elicited diverse reactions on social media, ranging from curious to funny ones, with many expressing rather strong opinions. Let us walk you through a few responses that stand out:

Here’s how netizens have reacted as Britney Spears reportedly chose Selena Gomez or Natalie Portman as top choices for her biopic

A user identified as @ihatefakos quipped about Natalie Portman as a possible choice:

“Natalie Portman makes more sense, but how is she going to play teenage Britney?”

Another user on X (@SummertimeX5) commented:

“And who will be doing the singing, acting, and dancing?”

A user (@The Vu Viscount) wrote:

“I feel like they need to cast an unknown, this should be someone’s breakout role”

    Another user (@Invincible) expressed:

“I think Selena Gomez would be perfect as Britney”

    A netizen (@JT) commented:

“Britney is not Latina. So Selena shouldn’t be an option.”

    Another netizen (@M) expressed:

“u want THIS to play britney’s biopic lmfao”

    A user (@COWBOYREQUIEM) wrote:

“i can actually see selena emulating her very well. i can imagine the diet pepsi segment interview for example. she would do that so well. and play the real emotion of britney in the media well. i just think she will get it and truly put her mind too it. legend”

    Another user (@flowers) commented:

    “Natalie looks more like Britney”

    A folk (@kendall) commented:

“selena – NO that doesn’t make any sense. Natalie – beautiful but too old? isn’t this based on britney when she’s in her teens”

    A netizen (@benni) expressed:

“please let it be selena. just so i can laugh the entire time”

A user (@Juan Pablo Rotger) commented:

“Natalie Portman is the exact same age as Britney. Might as well play herself at that point.”

Many users felt Selena Gomez with her a youthful charm and vitality as a performer might evoke Britney’s formative years and, hence, be the ideal fit. Others feel that Natalie Portman’s range and depth would suit the role in terms of strength and complexity.

Given how complicated Britney’s life and career have been, choosing the perfect actor to play her role is certainly no a small task. Tough call for the fans, and surely tough for the casting team of the film. May be Chu and company will find the right choice in a thrid actress.

Meanwhile, the argument on social media continues.

  • Diablo 4 is reportedly in development for Switch 2

A Switch 2 port of Diablo 4 is currently in the works, it’s claimed.

That’s according to eXputer writer eXtas1s, who in the past has had a strong track record of revealing upcoming Game Pass titles ahead of their official confirmation.

In his latest video discussing the Switch 2 and the various reports and leaks surrounding its software, eXtas1s initially acknowledges a claim made earlier this month from reliable insider NateTheHate that Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Microsoft Flight Simulator are coming to Switch 2.

“These are two of the video games Microsoft will port to Switch 2, but they aren’t the only ones,” eXtas1s stated in his video.

“In fact, here’s a little bit of an exclusive or scoop I can tell you about. According to what I’ve been told, Diablo 4 is already in the works for Nintendo Switch 2, so it wouldn’t be surprising at all if Diablo 4 was released in 2025 on Switch 2.”

He then went on to state that a Call of Duty game was a certainty given Microsoft’s previous commitment, and also suggested Fallout 4, Starfield, Tekken 8 and Elden Ring could also be coming to Switch 2, though these discussions were more speculative and presented with less certainty than his Diablo 4 claim.

News about Microsoft bringing more games to other consoles is met with somewhat less surprise these days, following the company’s commitment to getting Xbox games on as many devices as possible.

Xbox first announced in February 2024 plans to bring a wave of games to PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, in what appeared to be a significant change of strategy, starting with Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush, Sea of Thieves and Grounded.

Later, Microsoft announced Doom: The Dark Ages for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PS5 and confirmed that a PS5 version of its Indiana Jones game will be released later this year. The Outer Worlds 2 is also planned for PS5.
