Bitcoin gains as Trump reportedly plans crypto executive order
Bitcoin rejoined the crypto rally on Friday amid reports that President-elect Donald Trump could soon release an executive order making crypto a national priority.
The price of the flagship cryptocurrency was last higher by more than 4% at $104,672.37, according to Coin Metrics. The broader crypto market, as measured by the CoinDesk 20 index, was up another 3%, after a 4% increase Thursday.
Shares of exchange operators Coinbase and Robinhood advanced more than 4% each. Trading activity in small cap cryptocurrencies benefits trading platforms. Appetite for smaller cap, higher risk coins has grown ahead of Trump’s inauguration, with litecoin surging 30% in the past two days.
The moves follow a Bloomberg report late Thursday that Trump could create the crypto advisory council he previously promised, giving the industry a voice within his administration. A bitcoin stockpile is part of discussions about a possible executive order that would cover several areas of crypto policy, the New York Times reported the same day.
Bitcoin trades above $100,000 ahead of Trump’s inauguration
Newly heightened expectations come after warnings from Wall Street this month that although having a pro-crypto Congress and White House in 2025 is sure to be supportive for innovation in the industry and asset class, it could take a while before the market feels the impact.
Coins and crypto projects outside of bitcoin arguably stand to gain more from clear and supportive policy and regulation, as they’ve been more of a target of SEC lawsuits and alleged banking discrimination under the Biden administration. Some investors say bitcoin could see a rocket ship rally, however, if a national stockpile or reserve is established.
Bitcoin has been trading closely with stocks so far this year. It’s been in consolidation mode since late December, when Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell sounded an inflation alarm that subsided this week after two cool December inflation reports. Bitcoin ETFs have seen more than $1 billion in inflows in the past two days.
Investors expect any announcements from the incoming administration next week to send bitcoin higher – potentially to a new record.
Newly heightened expectations come after warnings from Wall Street this month that although having a pro-crypto Congress and White House in 2025 is sure to be supportive for innovation in the industry and asset class, it could take a while before the market feels the impact.
“The new administration and a new SEC chairman opens the door for new opportunity in cryptocurrency innovation,” JPMorgan analyst Kenneth Worthington said in a note this week. However, he added, “we don’t see a next wave of cryptocurrency [exchange-traded product] launches as being meaningful for the crypto ecosystem given much smaller market capitalization of other tokens and far lower investor interest.”
Bitcoin’s record is $108,327.01, from Dec. 17. It’s up more than 11% in 2025.
Bitcoin surged in value today as reports surfaced that former President Donald Trump is planning to issue an executive order on cryptocurrencies. The news sent shockwaves through the market, with Bitcoin prices rising by over 10% in just a few hours. Many experts believe that Trump’s involvement in the crypto space could bring much-needed regulatory clarity and legitimacy to the industry. However, some are wary of the former president’s potential impact on the market, as his unpredictability and controversial statements could cause volatility.
Regardless of the outcome, one thing is clear: Bitcoin continues to prove itself as a resilient and valuable asset in today’s ever-changing financial landscape. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Jimmy Butler announces that he’s ‘back,’ but friction with Heat reportedly remains after suspension
Jimmy Butler is back. Officially. His seven-game suspension is over, and he was not listed on the injury report in advance of Friday’s game between the Miami Heat and the Denver Nuggets. Less than two hours before tip-off, and shortly after Chris Haynes reported that Butler is expected to be in the starting lineup, Butler’s agent, Bernie Lee, took a page out of Michael Jordan’s book:
ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reported earlier that the Heat expected him to play. ESPN also reported that there is a “palpable dread at what he might do and the environment the ongoing chaos might create.” Butler reportedly reiterated his trade demand in a meeting with team president Pat Riley last week, and sources close to him told ESPN that he was infuriated by the length of his suspension. (If the NBPA’s grievance is unsuccessful, he will lose more than $2.3 million in salary.)
It’s not just that Butler doesn’t want to be on the team anymore. It’s that, at least according to sources close to the team, it doesn’t want him around anymore, either.
“We don’t want him back,” one source told ESPN.
“I don’t know how he can come back to this locker room,” another source added.
Pat Riley would be wise to take his own advice with Heat’s Jimmy Butler saga unresolved as suspension ends
Bill Reiter
ESPN reported the organization has seen Butler’s recent activity on social media “as an affront,” and that players, coaches and staffers have “grown weary” of Butler. Butler, meanwhile, has reportedly grown weary of watching Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo take on more offensive responsibility, as he believes it has come at his expense. On Jan. 2, after the last game in which Butler played, he told reporters that he wanted to “get my joy back for playing basketball,” that this could “probably not” happen in Miami and that his role was simply to play defense.
“If they’re doing this transition to Bam and Tyler, Jimmy’s like, ‘Fine, do your transition,’” a source close to Butler told ESPN. “If [he’s] going to be the second or third wheel, [he’ll] be that in Phoenix to Kevin Durant and Devin Booker.”
The Phoenix Suns would reportedly love to trade for Butler, but there is no way for them to acquire him without trading Bradley Beal, who has a no-trade clause and is on a contract that will pay him $57.1 million in 2026-27. In theory, they could trade their 2031 first-round pick to the Heat in a Butler deal, but they’d have to find a third team to take Beal’s massive contract, and Beal would have to approve the trade. This is unlikely, and it’s not like Miami has an abundance of appealing offers on the table, either.
This standoff comes at an inconvenient time: Trades, especially ones involving big salaries — Butler is on the books for $48.8 million this season, with a $52.4 million player option for 2025-26 — are difficult to pull off because of the restrictions in the new collective bargaining agreement, and teams cannot simply shut down star players because of the Player Participation Policy (PPP).
There may be some wiggle room on that last part, though: The PPP stipulates that the league office can make exceptions for “rare and unusual circumstances.” If Butler doesn’t do anything else that merits a suspension, the team can’t find a suitable trade and both sides simply want to move on, one could make an argument that the circumstances are rare and unusual.
Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler has declared that he is ‘back’ after serving a suspension for conduct detrimental to the team. However, reports suggest that there is still friction between Butler and the organization.Butler, who has been a key player for the Heat, was suspended for one game for an incident that occurred during a heated exchange with head coach Erik Spoelstra. Despite his return, sources say that there are lingering tensions between Butler and the team.
The All-Star forward has been known for his fiery personality and intense competitiveness, which has sometimes rubbed teammates and coaches the wrong way. While his return to the court is certainly a positive development for the Heat, it remains to be seen how the reported friction will impact the team moving forward.
Fans will be eagerly watching to see how Butler’s return and the ongoing issues with the organization will play out as the Heat continue their push for a playoff spot. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

A change already took place in the New England Patriots coaching staff and one is coming to the front office as well.
ESPN’s Mike Reiss, who cited sources, reported Friday evening that executive vice president of football business Robyn Glaser is set to resign from her job with the Patriots. She spent 18 years with the franchise and was one of the team’s highest-ranking executives. Reiss noted that Glaser plans to work until mid-February before stepping away.
Glaser became a polarizing figure this past season as she added senior advisor to former coach Jerod Mayo among her responsibilities, which also included business negotiations, finance, HR, technology, legal, compliance, and league relationships, per MassLive’s Mark Daniels.
Bill Belichick made sure to point out Glaser at times during the 2024 campaign as things went sideways with New England with a second straight 4-13 season.
Glaser joined the Patriots in 2007 as a senior adviser to ownership and club counsel while Belichick was still in charge. She said in the AppleTV+ docuseries “The Dynasty” that on her first day on the job was when league executives and security were at One Patriot Place investigating the Spygate scandal.
Story continues below advertisement
Glaser worked her way up the organizational depth chart over the years, being promoted to vice president in 2011 and and senior vice president in 2018, per Reiss. Her title changed in 2022 when she became senior vice president, business affairs and chief administrative officer of football.
With Glaser’s impending departure, it feels like one of many soon-to-be changes coming to the Patriots this offseason with Vrabel now at the helm.
According to reports, a high-ranking executive within the New England Patriots organization is set to resign following the hiring of Mike Vrabel as the team’s new head coach. The executive, whose name has not been disclosed, has been a key figure within the Patriots front office for several years. This news comes as a surprise to many within the football world, as the executive has been instrumental in the team’s success over the years. It is unclear what led to the decision to resign, but sources close to the situation have indicated that it may have been a result of disagreements over the coaching search process.
Mike Vrabel, a former Patriots player and defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans, was announced as the team’s new head coach earlier this week. His hiring was met with mixed reactions from fans and analysts, but it appears that the executive in question was not in favor of the decision.
As the Patriots prepare for a new era under Mike Vrabel, it remains to be seen how this shakeup within the front office will impact the team moving forward. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.

Patriots’ pass rush specialist reportedly leaving coaching staff – Boston Herald
Patriots director of skill development Joe Kim will not return for the 2025 season, according to ESPN.
Kim spent the past seven years In New England, where he reunited with former coach Bill Belichick after the two worked together with the Browns in the early 1990s. Kim began as a defensive assistant/pass rush coach, implementing martial-arts techniques to help Patriots defenders defeat blocks and pressure quarterbacks. He was promoted to director of skill development in 2020.
Kim previously worked for several NFL franchises, including the Cowboys, Dolphins, Packers, Broncos, Giants, Bills. Chiefs, Bears and Washington franchise, as well as Penn State University. His exit comes as the Patriots continue to revamp their coaching staff under new coach Mike Vrabel. Last year, Kim was one of a few staffers from the Belichick era who remained in the same positions under the recently fired Jerod Mayo.
“I’ve had nothing but a positive experience with the Patriots,” Kim told ESPN. “The time is right for a new challenge.”
The Boston Herald has reported that the New England Patriots’ pass rush specialist is leaving the coaching staff. This departure comes as a surprise to many fans, as the specialist was highly regarded for his ability to develop and implement effective pass rush strategies. The Patriots have not yet confirmed the departure, but sources close to the team have indicated that the specialist is pursuing other opportunities in the coaching world. This news has left many wondering how the team will adjust their defensive strategy moving forward.
It remains to be seen who will fill the void left by the pass rush specialist, but the Patriots will likely be looking for someone with a similar level of expertise and experience. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

Brave New World’s Surprisingly Short Runtime Is Reportedly Revealed, And I’m Actually Happy About It

Roger Ebert’s wise words of “No good movie is too long, and no bad movie is short enough” are permanently etched in mind, especially when heading into the 2025 movie schedule. That being said, a new development has inspired me to be a bit hypocritical about that doctrine. You can thank an update about the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World for that, as I’m quite pleased that a surprisingly short runtime is reportedly in store for this blockbuster!
That knowledge comes from the official AMC Theatres page for the flick, which now lists Brave New World as running 118 minutes. On the surface, that’s a pretty crisp pace for the right story to play out. But, again, if your Marvel movie sticks the landing at 150 minutes, like James Gunn did with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, that screening will fly by.
That actually touches upon the major reason I’m happy Captain America: Brave New World has this allegedly svelte time frame. While director Julias Onah’s upcoming Marvel movie is the fourth to carry the Cap brand, it starts off a new story with a new MCU character taking on that storied mantle.
Credit: Marvel Studios
So we’re not quite in reboot country, but one could say a rebranding is pretty close. That’s because Sam Wilson’s tenure with the shield should be a very different story than Steve Rogers’ origins. Judging by the action we’ve seen in the trailer, I have a feeling that the interconnected intrigue will still be present, while also allowing Brave New World to be a total thrill ride.
Just picture it: a chapter that still sets the table, but doesn’t get bogged down with too much prep work for the road ahead! It certainly worked for 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, and that beauty was the last Marvel movie in order right before The Avengers stormed our world!
To that point, check out this list of the running times for Chris Evans’ trilogy of solo Captain America movies:
-
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) – 124 minutes
-
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) – 136 minutes
-
Captain America: Civil War (2016) – 147 minutes
Everything from the rise of the Thunderbolts* to other necessary beats on the road to Avengers: Doomsday awaits, and having Captain America: Brave New World seemingly slimmed down feels promising. Of course, 2023’s The Marvels was even shorter at 105 minutes long and, if you ask me, that movie definitely fell into the “not short enough” bucket.
In either case, I wonder if this news will have any effects on Cap 4’s opening weekend estimates? Surely we’ll get updated numbers as the clock ticks down to a Brave New World dawning in theaters, starting February 14th. For those of you who like to do the homework, you can catch the previous Captain America films and The Falcon and Winter Soldier’s one-season run, through access to a Disney+ subscription!
As a fan of Aldous Huxley’s classic novel “Brave New World,” I was initially skeptical when I heard that a television adaptation was in the works. I was worried that the intricate details and thought-provoking themes of the book wouldn’t translate well to the small screen. However, my fears were put to rest when I learned that the show’s runtime is reportedly just eight episodes long.At first, I was surprised by the short length of the series. I had expected a sprawling epic that would delve deep into the complexities of the dystopian society Huxley created. But as I thought more about it, I realized that a shorter runtime could actually work in the show’s favor.
With only eight episodes to work with, the creators of “Brave New World” will have to be more selective about which elements of the story they choose to focus on. This means that each episode will likely be packed with important plot points and character development, without any filler or unnecessary subplots. It also means that the pacing of the show will likely be tighter, keeping viewers engaged from start to finish.
While some fans may be disappointed by the short length of the series, I’m actually happy about it. I believe that a shorter runtime will force the creators to make every minute count, resulting in a more tightly crafted and impactful adaptation of Huxley’s novel. I can’t wait to see how they bring this brave new world to life on screen.

Jimmy Butler reportedly won’t seek extension with Heat, still wants to be traded
Jimmy Butler reportedly told Miami Heat team president Pat Riley in a face-to-face meeting last week that he still wants to be traded, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
In that conversation, Butler reportedly told Riley that he won’t sign an extension and will only use his $52 million player option for the 2025-26 season this summer as a way to help a trade along.
The Butler saga began when it was reported last month that the 35-year-old wants a change of scenery and prefers to be moved by the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline. Butler and the Heat were unable to come to terms on a contract extension this past summer.
The Christmas Day news led to Riley issuing a statement saying clearly, “We are not trading Jimmy Butler.”
While speaking to reporters a week later, Butler said, “I want to see me get my joy back from playing basketball and wherever that may be, we’ll find out pretty soon. I want to get my joy back. I’m happy here off the court, but I want to be back to somewhat dominant, I want to hoop and I want to help this team win. Right now, I’m not doing that.”
On Jan. 3, the Heat suspended Butler for seven games for “conduct detrimental to the team over the course of the season and particularly the last several weeks” and changed course, saying they would listen to trade offers.
Butler is eligible to return to the Heat on Thursday, a day before they play their first home game following a six-game road trip. They are currently 20-18 and in seventh place in the Eastern Conference. They have gone 3-3 in Butler’s absence
Butler, who is in the final year of a contract that pays him $49 million this season, is averaging 17.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.2 steals in 22 games. The seven-game suspension will cost him $2.35 million in salary, but the NBA Players Association field a grievance and released a statement calling the discipline “excessive and inappropriate.”
According to recent reports, Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler has reportedly decided not to seek a contract extension with the team and is still pushing for a trade. This news comes as a surprise to many, as Butler has been a key player for the Heat since joining the team in 2019.Despite leading the Heat to the NBA Finals in 2020, Butler is said to have grown frustrated with the team’s lack of success in recent seasons and is looking to move on to a new situation. The 32-year-old guard is still under contract with the Heat for the next two seasons, but it appears that he is eager to explore his options and find a new team to play for.
Butler’s decision not to seek an extension with the Heat has sparked speculation about where he could end up next. Several teams are said to be interested in acquiring the All-Star guard, and it remains to be seen where he will ultimately land.
As fans wait to see how this situation develops, one thing is clear: Jimmy Butler’s future in Miami is uncertain, and it seems likely that he will be on the move sooner rather than later. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Drones attacked Russia’s largest commercial seaport, Ust-Luga, in Leningrad Oblast overnight on Jan. 4, the independent news channel Astra reported.
Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Ukraine has been regularly targeting facilities in Russia that fuel its war efforts.
Most of the drones that attacked Leningrad Oblast, located over 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) from the Ukrainian border, were shot down over the terminal of Novotrans, a Russian transportation and logistics company, Astra reported, citing its undisclosed sources.
Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko reported that four drones were downed in Leningrad Oblast using electronic warfare and firearms.
The attack damaged windows in one of the buildings on the port’s territory, according to preliminary information. There were no casualties, Drozdenko said.
The Kyiv Independent could not verify these claims.
The Jan. 4 attack on the Russian port in Leningrad Oblast is not the first attack of its kind. On Jan. 24, 2024, Novatek’s gas-condensate plant caught fire at the port of Ust-Luga following a possible coordinated effort by Ukraine to strike key targets deep inside Russian territory.
The Ust-Luga Commercial Seaport began operations in December 2001 with the opening of a coal terminal. In the early 2020s, it became one of the largest seaports in Russia.
Ukraine struck hundreds of targets deep inside Russia in 2024. What did they achieve?
As Russian troops continued to hold an advantage on the ground, Ukraine has been keen to level the power in the air. In 2024, Ukrainian forces bet on drones, hitting targets thousands of kilometers deep inside Russia. Ukrainian attacks have targeted dozens of oil refineries that aid Russia’s war e…
In a recent development, drones have reportedly targeted one of Russia’s largest sea trade ports in Leningrad Oblast. The port, located on the Baltic Sea, is a crucial hub for international trade and plays a significant role in Russia’s economy. The drones, equipped with explosives, were said to have been flown over the port by unknown individuals. While the exact extent of the damage caused by the attack is still being assessed, it has raised concerns about the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to such attacks.
Authorities are currently investigating the incident and have not yet identified the perpetrators. The Russian government has condemned the attack and vowed to take all necessary measures to ensure the security of its ports and other key facilities.
This incident serves as a reminder of the growing threat posed by drones in modern warfare and highlights the need for enhanced security measures to protect vital infrastructure. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

PGA Tour reportedly in discussions to change Tour Championship format
The PGA Tour is contemplating a format change to its Tour Championship, according to reports from The Athletic and The Associated Press.
The Athletic first reported that Tour officials were discussing options for replacing the current staggered-start format for its FedExCup playoff finale at East Lake with a “bracket-style event.” The AP later added that several concepts were being discussed, and the Tour was “leaning” toward some sort of seeded match-play bracket, with potential ideas including medal match play; stroke play leading into match play; and having matches decide the top eight finishers.
The AP added that the Tour’s Player Advisory Council has yet to see any proposals and that a switch in time for the 2025 Tour Championship is unlikely.
All sources in the reports spoke to the outlets on condition of anonymity.
The Tour moved the 30-man Tour Championship to a staggered start in 2019, rewarding the FedExCup No. 1 by letting him begin the week at East Lake at 10 under, among other tiered starting positions. However, player opinion has never been overly positive. In fact, just this past season, Scottie Scheffler called the format “silly.”
Keegan Bradley was asked about the reports on Friday at Kapalua. He said he’d only just heard about the potential changes, but he agreed adjustments probably need to be made.
“I do know that the format now I think is a little clunky,” Bradley said. “I think it’s a little strange. There’s no right or wrong way. They’re trying to create drama in the last event of the year, and you got guys like Scottie Scheffler who, you know, if they don’t do something like that, wouldn’t have to even play that week and you win the FedExCup. So, I’m not in a position, thankfully, to make those [changes], but I’m all for trying to make the Tour better.”
The revealed potential tweaks offer some promise.
Medal match play is a version of the head-to-head format where competitors play 18 holes, after which the lowest stroke-play score wins the match. If tied, like normal match play, the match goes to sudden death. Medal match play is most notably used at the NCAA Division II Championship, and it also is featured in the final round of the St. Andrews Links Collegiate, a college event that finishes on the Old Course. Imagine competing on the Old Course, yet your match ends on No. 16; medal match play ensures that every match goes to the final hole, surely an enticing aspect for sponsors who purchase suites around East Lake’s 18th green.
Top amateur championships such as the U.S. Amateur and Western Amateur use stroke-play qualifying before advancing the top finishers to match play. This format would ensure that every player who qualifies for East Lake sticks around for multiple days, as would a match-play format with four culminating matches, presumably for first, third, fifth and seventh place – and corresponding prize payouts. Usually, such matches would come at the end of a bracket that includes consolation elements.
There are certainly plenty of options, with the common thread being a head-to-head showdown for big money on Sunday at East Lake.
“I think that would be certainly interesting, because the pressure that you would feel at the Tour Championship, if you’re going to win the FedExCup and win whatever amount of money is at stake, that’s real pressure,” Bradley said. “So, to watch two guys go out and play for it would be pretty cool.”
The PGA Tour is reportedly in discussions to change the format of the Tour Championship, according to multiple reports. The proposed changes would see the tournament move from a traditional stroke-play format to a match-play format. This potential shift comes as the PGA Tour continues to look for ways to enhance the excitement and entertainment value of its events. The match-play format is known for its thrilling head-to-head competition, which could bring a new level of drama to the Tour Championship.
While the details of the proposed changes are still being finalized, the move to a match-play format would likely involve a bracket-style tournament with players facing off in one-on-one matches to determine the champion. This format could provide fans with more intense and strategic competition, as players battle it out on each hole to advance to the next round.
It remains to be seen if the PGA Tour will ultimately make the switch to a match-play format for the Tour Championship, but the potential change has already generated plenty of buzz among golf fans. Stay tuned for updates as the discussions progress and the future of the Tour Championship format is decided.

NCAA Reportedly Considering Allowing Five Years of Eligibility Across All Sports
The NCAA is considering making another seismic shift to the quickly evolving landscape of college sports.
With the pending settlement in the House case, and pushes to unionize college sports teams already at the forefront, the NCAA is now reportedly looking at giving student-athletes five years of eligibility in all sports.
CBS Sports‘ Jon Rothstein reported Friday that, according to an NCAA official, the organization is looking at allowing all players to have five years to compete collegiately, a topic that “will continue to be discussed in early 2025.”
Current rules dictate that student-athletes have a five-year clock to compete in four collegiate seasons. However, things have been muddied since the COVID-19 pandemic, as due to the interruptions it caused to the 2020-21 season, any athlete who competed in it had the option to use a fifth year of eligibility.
We’ve seen many swimmers and divers take advantage of the COVID fifth year over the last few seasons, but 2024-25 will mark the last time it can be utilized (as freshmen in 2020-21 would now be in their fifth year) unless someone has taken a redshirt along the way.
This isn’t the first time the idea has come up in NCAA talks, per reports, as Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger reported in early September that the NCAA was looking at applying the football redshirt rule to all sports moving forward. Football and wrestling both have rules that allow players to participate in a certain number of contests while still using their redshirt year, while all other sports don’t have the same leeway.
The latest report from Rothstein sounds as if it wouldn’t be applying the redshirt rule to other sports, it would be a blanket rule allowing five years of eligibility for student-athletes.
This news comes just a few weeks after a Tennessee Judge ruled in favor of college football quarterback Diego Pavia, allowing him to compete in the 2025 season despite having exhausted his eligibility under the current rules. Pavia argued that a junior college stint shouldn’t count towards a player’s NCAA eligibility—a junior college stint counts as one season of eligibility per the current rules—and was granted a temporary injunction. This means he’ll be able to play next season (despite being ineligible under the current rules) before the topic is revisited.
The NCAA is reportedly considering a major change that could benefit student-athletes across all sports – allowing five years of eligibility instead of the current four. This potential rule change would give athletes an additional year to compete at the collegiate level, providing them with more flexibility and opportunities to continue pursuing their athletic dreams. This proposal comes at a time when many student-athletes have had their seasons disrupted or canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Giving athletes an extra year of eligibility could help make up for lost time and provide them with a chance to fully experience their collegiate athletic careers.
If this change is implemented, it could have a significant impact on the landscape of college sports. Athletes would have more time to develop their skills, compete at a high level, and potentially attract the attention of professional leagues.
