  • UK could join Europe-wide customs deal in post-Brexit reset, Brussels trade chief says

The UK could join a Europe -wide trading agreement as part of Sir Keir Starmer ’s post- Brexit reset with the EU , one of the bloc’s top trade chiefs has said.

Maros Sefcovic, who led post-Brexit negotiations for the European Union, said it would consider letting Britain join the Pan-Euro-Mediterranean Convention (PEM) as the PM chases closer ties with Brussels.

The PEM allows for tariff-free trade of goods across Europe, as well as some North African and Levantine nations.

Maros Sefcovic said the European Union would consider letting Britain join the Pan-Euro-Mediterranean Convention (PEM) (AFP via Getty Images)

Some business groups have backed the UK joining PEM as it would help to maintain complex supply chains, but the previous Conservative Government chose not to pursue it as part of a post-Brexit trade agreement.

Speaking to the BBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Mr Sefcovic said the idea had not yet been “precisely formulated” and that the “ball is in the UK’s court”.

The UK government has reportedly begun consulting with businesses on the benefits of the PEM plan and how it could help cut red tape and improve trade. But, hours after Mr Sefcovic’s comments, a UK minister rejected the proposal.

The Liberal Democrats said rejecting the customs scheme was an act of “economic negligence” and called for an urgent rethink.

Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey said: “It is alarming that the Government is happy to negotiate with China but won’t even look at a better trading arrangement with our closest neighbours in Europe. This is an act of economic negligence.

“If the Government thinks it will get growth back in the economy by borrowing Boris Johnson’s playbook on European negotiations it is going to end up being sorely disappointed.

“It is time for a proper UK-EU customs arrangement so we can strengthen our negotiations with Donald Trump, cut the red tape on our businesses and grow the economy.”

Asked about the proposals, housing minister Matthew Pennycook told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “We are not seeking to participate in that particular arrangement.

“In general, the government has been very clear that we do want a closer relationship with our European partners, both in trading terms, but also importantly, in terms of security and defense cooperation, where we need to work far more closely.

“So absolutely, yes, we do want a closer relationship, but as for this particular arrangement, no, we’re not seeking to participate in it at the present time.”

But Dr Mike Galsworthy, chairman of the European Movement UK, told The Independent : “With growth stalled and exports falling through the floor since we left the EU, Keir Starmer should welcome the offer of joining the PEM customs arrangement with open arms.

“But we should go further. Joining the EU customs union would ease so many of the trade barriers our businesses have faced since we left the EU. And restoring to our young people the rights they once enjoyed to travel and work freely across our continent.”

The lack of a veterinary agreement after Brexit has been a major sticking point for UK food businesses hoping to export to Britain’s nearest neighbours.

    https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=3AWM9U_0yMQUj1000
Keir Starmer has been seeking a reset in post-Brexit relations with the EU (AP)

Mr Sefcovic also told the BBC he would like to see the possibility of a full-scale veterinary agreement between the EU and UK reviewed.

If UK food and farm products were given single market treatment, he said it would mean “we would have to have the same rules and we have to upgrade them at the same time, we call it dynamic alignment”.

The intervention comes six months into Sir Keir’s ambitious plan to broker a new trade relationship with the EU. He has held a series of meetings with European leaders, including visiting European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels in October and hosting Emmanuel Macron at his grace and favour country estate Chequers this month.

Another key sticking point in the reset so far has been Sir Keir’s reluctance to accept a youth mobility scheme with Brussels, which would allow under-30s to study, work and travel across the European Union for up to two years.

The PM is wary of agreeing to anything that his opponents could portray as a betrayal of Brexit, while some in government fear a youth mobility scheme would drive up immigration numbers.

Europe’s other key demands centre on EU access to UK fishing waters and Britain’s adherence to rulings of the European Court of Justice.

In a recent development, it has been suggested that the UK could potentially join a Europe-wide customs deal in a post-Brexit reset. This proposal comes from the Brussels trade chief, who believes that such a move could help facilitate smoother trade relations between the UK and the European Union.

With Brexit having created significant disruptions to trade between the UK and the EU, finding a way to improve cooperation and reduce barriers is crucial for both parties. By joining a Europe-wide customs deal, the UK could potentially benefit from easier access to the EU market and smoother trade processes.

While this proposal is still in the early stages and would require further negotiations and discussions, it is an interesting concept that could potentially help reset and improve post-Brexit trade relations. As the UK continues to navigate its new relationship with the EU, exploring innovative solutions like a Europe-wide customs deal could be key to fostering a more cooperative and mutually beneficial trade environment.

  • Olivia Smith: The central figure of Liverpool’s reset

Olivia Smith eases back into a faded red velvet upholstered chair. The 20-year-old Liverpool striker props her right foot on to her left knee, clasps her hands in her lap and cracks a joke about being a player who defenders “in the best league in the world” feel they need to foul to stop.

After Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion to mark the return of the Women’s Super League from a five-week winter break, Smith is holding court.

On cue, the door behind the Canada international squeals, announcing Brighton manager Dario Vidosic’s arrival. Smith’s time is, technically, up. But only in this space. A few feet of plaster wall separates Smith from the Liverpool fans outside chanting her name.

This is an appropriate reception for a player who, for long spells, was irresistible against Brighton at the Totally Wicked Stadium in St Helens. Before her substitution after 62 minutes, Smith was all whirring legs and energy, her goal — Liverpool’s opener — a microcosm of this.

With half an hour gone, Smith careered down the right flank, the ball tied to her feet as she traded blows with defender Poppy Pattinson before dropping her shoulder and finding a half-yard of space to thump a shot into the top left corner beyond goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley.

It was a goal that screamed and shouted, suggesting that Liverpool’s poor start to the season could become a distant memory.

“The past two weeks since we’ve been in, we’ve been really focused on winning,” said Smith. “We’re looking at this as a total reset, especially now that we have the depth.”

    go-deeper

    GO DEEPER

Olivia Smith interview: From wanting to ‘become a legend’ aged seven to playing for Canada aged 15

Liverpool’s fourth-place finish last season meant expectations were high. A club-record £250,000 ($300,000) was spent on Smith, but in pre-season manager Matt Beard still insisted his team had “overperformed” in their second campaign back in the WSL.

The first half of this season seemed to validate the 47-year-old’s trepidation. It took October’s 3-2 win against Tottenham Hotspur for a first win to arrive.

Heading into the winter break, Liverpool lost four successive league matches without scoring. They had won twice in 10 matches, managing 0.9 goals per 90 while conceding 1.7. Last season, Liverpool scored 1.6 league goals per 90 minutes, conceding 1.3.

Comparing key metrics from this season to last, Liverpool’s style and approach to matches had not significantly changed (as shown by the largely similar stats below for possession, shots and long-ball shares), suggesting the team’s execution was the problem.

Barring the number of direct attacks the team averaged per 90 (1.9 in 2024/25 vs 2.8 in 2023/24), Liverpool’s style remains largely unchanged (graphics above).

    go-deeper

Beard regularly pointed to his depleted ranks, along with the youthfulness of the side — of Liverpool’s starting XI on Friday, eight were 25 or younger, with Gemma Evans, 28, being the oldest player. His argument that the winter break could provide necessary reprieve held substance.

Liverpool were forced to cancel a pre-season friendly against Manchester United at the last minute due to injuries depleting the squad. Star striker Sophie Roman Haug, who scored seven last season, has been out since October with a foot and ankle injury.

Training sessions have been conducted with 12 players, with Beard recruiting staff members and academy players to fill in numbers. Of Liverpool’s starting XI against Brighton, only midfielder Taylor Hinds, forward Cornelia Kapocs and midfielder Sam Kerr — on loan from Bayern Munich until the end of the season — had not sustained injuries that kept them out of at least one match.

“I lost seven out of 10 defenders in pre-season,” said Beard. “I then lost three midfield players out of five. Two forwards. I lost (goalkeeper) Teagan Micah for most of pre-season. Then I lost (goalkeeper) Rachael Laws. We’ve had no consistency whatsoever.

“I said to the players before the game, as much as it’s been an up-and-down first half of the season, I’ve been so proud because they never gave up. But we’re over that now; that’s a learning curve. Me, the staff, we’ve looked at everything and said we can’t make the same mistakes where so many injuries come from. Everything we’ve learned in the last six months will make us a better team and a better group of staff.”

Beard’s squad was stretched in the first half of the season (Naomi Baker/Getty Images)

As Beard — serving a touchline suspension for picking up three bookings and sitting in the stands — made his fourth substitution with an hour gone, the sense of relief in a much healthier-looking squad was clear.

That brightening mood increased when Jorelyn Carabali’s own goal bundled over the line in the 82nd minute, restoring Liverpool’s lead after Nikita Parris’ deflected second-half strike. A winner was the least Liverpool deserved for their most convincing display of the season. Liverpool pressed and worked off the ball particularly well against Brighton. Beard’s side had less possession (shown below) but won more duels (50 to 41) and tackles (16 to 11) and dispossessed their opponents 22 times.

The display was more in line with that from last season and was impressive given it came against Brighton, who sit four points behind Manchester United and Arsenal in fourth and third.

But there remains room for improvement too. Liverpool had chances to put the game away before Parris’ equaliser. Many of Liverpool’s eight shots at goal were tame, with only substitute Mia Enderby’s effort in the 66th minute stretching Baggaley.

This was just the third time this season Liverpool have scored more than one goal in a league match. Only Leicester City (three), Everton (six), and promoted Crystal Palace (eight) have scored fewer than their 11.

“In training and when I was back home (over Christmas), I’m working on the little details,” said Smith, who is now Liverpool’s top scorer in the WSL (three). “We need goals to win games. That’s the main focus going into the second half of the season.”

Lakers trade D’Lo, Grizzlies miss out on Finney-Smith, Kings need a reset & Pistons deep dive | Kevin O’Connor Show

In this episode of the Kevin O’Connor Show, KOC is joined by Dan Titus to break down some of the NBA’s biggest trade moves and coaching shakeups before deep diving on the Detroit Pistons with Bryce Simon. KOC and Dan start with the recent D’Angelo Russell trade, with the Los Angeles Lakers acquiring Dorian Finney-Smith. KOC and Dan discuss what else the Lakers need before the conversation turns to the Memphis Grizzlies, who missed out on DFS in this deal. KOC and Titus evaluate what this means for Memphis, which has been struggling to find its footing this season. Meanwhile, over in Brooklyn, the Nets’ latest moves signal a full rebuild. KOC also takes a moment to reflect on the Orlando Magic’s standout Tristan Da Silva turning heads as the team’s depth continues to shine.

KOC and DT weigh in on the Sacramento Kings’ disappointing start and the reality that the team needs a full reset. They debate the best landing spots for D’Aaron Fox, with the San Antonio Spurs emerging as a dream destination.

Later, KOC and Bryce Simon dive into the Detroit Pistons’ early season performance, with a focus on Cade Cunningham’s development. While Cunningham has made significant strides in his shooting, KOC questions whether his struggles with finishing at the rim and turnovers could hinder his potential as a true #1 option. They also discuss the inconsistency of Ivey and Duren, the Pistons’ potential draft plans and whether adding a player like Zach LaVine could be the key to unlocking the team’s next level.

Marvel Rivals Battle Pass Currency Will Reset Every Season

The first season of Marvel Rivals will be arriving for players very soon. While there is no official release date at this time, it is expected to be coming at the beginning of January. With more skins, maps and new characters potentially coming to the game, players are eager to learn what they can expect from the game’s first season. Players have had a ton of questions about how certain aspects of the game will work, and NetEase has provided some answers, although fans are still a little confused and even disappointed with the answers.

As the game is currently in Season 0, players had questions about how many of the monetization features of the game would work, including currencies and battle passes. A new developer blog post has some of the answers, although the systems that are in place have players frustrated. With multiple different currencies in the game, the monetization can be complicated, and players will want to know a few things before deciding to spend money on the game’s first season.

Even the Developers Admit the Currency is Confusing

NetEase Admits in a Blog Post That Their Rules Are Complex

10 Most Fun Marvel Rivals Characters, Ranked

With an impressive roster of iconic characters, as fans team up for Marvel Rivals, many wonder which among them are the game’s most fun to play.

Marvel Rivals has three different main currencies that all do different things. Lattice is a currency that looks like gold, and is the only currency that can be purchased directly with real money. Lattice can be used to purchase battle passes, or converted into the other two types of currency. Chrono Tokens are the second and purple currency and are used to unlock and purchase battle pass rewards. Units are the blue, final currency, and they are used for purchasing specific items from the in-game store.

The three currencies all make up the economy of the game, but NetEase had some bad news for players who have been hoarding their currencies. In a recent blog post, the developer stated that any Chrono Tokens earned in-game will be reset at the beginning of each season. This means that players hoping to keep their currency to use on the next battle pass will have all of their progress reverted. Many are frustrated by this change, but some Chrono Tokens are exempt from this rule. The blog post even states: “We hope this clears things up a bit. It’s a bit complicated, but we wanted to give you all as much info as possible to address your concerns.”

Players Don’t Want to Lose Their Currency

Players feel like they have wasted their time earning Chrono Tokens

Marvel Rivals: Every Vanguard & How Their Kit Works

Vanguard is Marvel Rivals’ tank class – here’s every one in the game, and what you need to know about them.

Chrono Tokens are relatively easy to obtain, with the main source of income being the rotating daily, seasonal, and event challenges. This way of obtaining this currency is completely free but is also what has caused players to become frustrated. Certain challenges require specific feats, like playing a specific character or role, to earn Chrono Tokens. For players who have been grinding these challenges to stockpile their Chrono Tokens, all of their time will have been wasted as they will be wiped when the next season arrives. The only Chrono Tokens that will be available from season to season are those purchased with Lattice. However, there are even exceptions to this rule also.

Any Chrono Tokens purchased at a discounted rate, such as a bundle with the upgraded battle pass, will not transfer across seasons, because it was purchased at a discount. The upgraded battle pass also allows players to earn Chrono Tokens at a faster rate than normal, and these Chrono Tokens will also not carry over. What seems to be confusing, is that Chrono Tokens essentially function as battle pass XP for the current battle pass.

However, the extra steps involved in obtaining the currency, and the confusing nature of how to obtain and retain them have left a sour taste in some players’ mouths. While Marvel Rivals likely won’t see any significant monetary loss from this decision, it certainly has players looking closer at the game, wary of any similar changes that could come down the pipeline.

Marvel Rivals, the popular mobile game that pits iconic Marvel superheroes against each other in epic battles, has announced a major change to its Battle Pass system. Starting with the next season, the currency used to purchase Battle Pass tiers will reset at the beginning of each season.

This means that players will no longer be able to hoard currency from one season to the next. Instead, they will need to use their currency during the current season or lose it when the next season begins.

This change is sure to shake up the game’s economy and force players to think strategically about how they spend their currency. Will they splurge on the current Battle Pass, or save up for the next one? Only time will tell.
