  • Texas school official resigns following undercover video on transgender athlete policy – Straight Arrow News

The executive director of Campus Operations for the Irving Independent School District, Reny Lizardo, has resigned following an undercover video release, according to the school district. The video shows Lizardo suggesting illegal actions regarding a child’s birth certificate to circumvent Texas law on transgender athletes.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called for Lizardo to be fired and investigated after the video surfaced.

The Save Women’s Sports Act was passed in June 2023. It prohibits transgender athletes from competing in girls’ and women’s sports, according to state law.

In a recent turn of events, a Texas school official has resigned following the release of an undercover video exposing the school’s controversial transgender athlete policy. The video, which was secretly recorded by a concerned parent, shows school officials discussing their discriminatory guidelines for transgender students participating in sports.

The official, who has not been named publicly, was caught on camera making derogatory remarks about transgender athletes and outlining a strict policy that would prevent them from competing in sports based on their gender identity. The video has sparked outrage among the community and has led to calls for the official’s resignation.

In a statement released by the school district, they have condemned the official’s actions and have announced that they will be conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. They have also stated that they are committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students, regardless of their gender identity.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that transgender individuals face in our society, particularly in the realm of sports. It is crucial that we continue to advocate for equality and acceptance for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity.

As more details emerge from this investigation, it is clear that there is still much work to be done to ensure that all students feel safe and supported in their schools. We must continue to fight against discrimination and prejudice in all its forms, and strive to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone.

  • Irving ISD administrator resigns after video sparks Texas Gov. Abbott to call for investigation

An Irving Independent School District administrator resigned this week after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called for his firing.

In a social media post, Abbott called for both “criminal and civil investigations” against Irving ISD after a video surfaced that allegedly showed Reny Lizardo, the executive director of Campus Operations for Irving ISD, speaking to an undercover investigator for Accuracy in Media, a nonprofit conservative watchdog group.

The video appeared to show Lizardo asking the woman, who claimed to be a mom, if she can legally change the gender on her child’s birth certificate so the male child can participate in female sports.

“I don’t know enough about it, is that possible?” Lizardo is heard on the video. “If you can get that done and you turn us a birth certificate that says this gender… that’s the gender we go with.”

At another point he appeared to say, “It’s not illegal if you don’t get caught, right?”

“Mr. Lizardo was more than happy to coach her on how to circumvent the law,” said Adam Guillette, the president of Accuracy in Media. “Then said, ‘If we get sued, we’ll just say this conversation never happened.’”

Guillette said the video was recorded in December. He said he returned to Irving ISD two weeks after that looking for answers.

“He denied everything, and I told him I had the video,” Guillette said. “We also brought a mobile billboard playing the video on a loop and parked it at the entrance to their district building. And he denied it all and asked me if he was being interviewed.”

Guillette alleged Lizardo then took him to someone in the district communications department.

“He said, ‘I can’t say anything until I’ve seen the video,’” Guillette said. “I offered to show it to him on a tablet or he could see it outside on the mobile billboard. He said he was too busy for that and took my information and never got back to me.”

Guillette said he has not heard from Irving ISD since that day.

“Many people will come out saying this was selective editing. This is a fake video,” Guillete said. “I’m not technically gifted enough to create deepfake videos of obscure Texas government employees. In addition, if it was fake, how come they haven’t denied it?”

Irving ISD released this statement to CBS News Texas, saying in part:

“…the videos were obtained under false pretenses … the message conveyed in the video, as presented, does not reflect the views nor policies of the district.
…while the matter continues to be under investigation, the individual identified in the video has tendered his resignation.”

*see Irving ISD’s full statement below.

Prior to that statement, the governor’s office doubled down in a statement to CBS News Texas, saying, “Biological boys have no business competing against biological girls, and Governor Abbott has made it clear that we must protect the integrity of girl’s sports. This school administrator should be fired, and he and Irving ISD should be investigated for violations of state law.”

CBS News Texas also reached out to Lizardo but we have not heard back.

Title IX protections for LGBTQ students and Texas law

Title IX recently expanded to protect transgender students from discrimination in educational programs and activities; however, Texas did not adopt that policy change.

The landmark 50-year-old law prohibits education entities that receive federal funds from discriminating on the basis of sex.

The Biden administration attempted to expand Title IX’s protections to LGBTQ students last year and broaden the definition of “hostile-environment harassment” to include harassment based on gender identity. Under the expanded protections, a school would be found in violation of Title IX if it prohibited transgender students from using restrooms and other facilities consistent with their gender identity.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued the Biden administration over the changes to the law, as did several Texas school districts. Paxton argued that Texas would be “harmed” if the changes took place.

“Texas educational institutions rely on federal funding and will be irreparably harmed if they lose their funding because of their reliance on 50 years of Title IX practice and legal precedent interpreting ‘on the basis of sex’ to mean biological sex, not ‘sexual orientation’ and ‘gender identity,’” the lawsuit states.

Abbott also condemned the changes to Title IX, sending a letter to Biden claiming the revision “forces schools to treat biological men as women.” Abbott also directed the Texas colleges and universities to ignore the revisions to Title IX.

In 2021, Abbott signed into law legislation that banned trans women and girls in K-12 schools from participating in sports teams aligned with their gender identities, and in 2023 legislation that bans trans athletes from participating in collegiate sports teams that match their gender identities. In 2023, Abbott also signed a law banning gender-affirming care for trans youth in Texas.

The changes to Title IX took effect Aug. 1 but in less than half of the states. Federal judges temporarily blocked it in 26 states as a result of legal challenges.

    Irving ISD full statement

“In Irving ISD, we are committed to upholding the requirements of state and federal laws, especially as it pertains to ensuring the safety and well-being of our students, and we will cooperate with any investigation initiated by relevant authorities.

We are aware of the unauthorized video footage circulating on social media of an individual connected with Irving ISD. The videos were obtained under false pretenses by an individual who posed as a concerned parent and additional individuals who posed as family friends of the employee pictured. The individuals also held themselves out as members of the media, but were not credentialed as such, constituting a breach of security.

In addition, the footage has been edited and is an incomplete representation of the entire conversation, making it difficult to properly assess its probative value. Nevertheless, we want to reiterate that Irving ISD complies with all state and federal laws and all employees are expected to adhere to any and all legal and ethical standards. The message conveyed in the video, as presented, does not reflect the views nor policies of the district.

Individual employees do not speak on behalf of the district. The individual identified was acting outside of his role as it relates to legal and regulatory expertise. While the matter continues to be under investigation, the individual identified in the video has tendered his resignation. The resignation was accepted upon receipt in accordance with district policy.

While the subject matter at issue has not been presented to the district to this point, we have received an overwhelming number of inquiries nonetheless. In response, we can also confirm that all Irving ISD student-athletes are participating in their sport in accordance with the sex they were assigned at birth.

Irving ISD is unwavering in our commitment to the safety and well-being of all of our students and staff. We remain focused on our primary function to maintain educational excellence and foster the full potential of our students.”

In a shocking turn of events, an Irving ISD administrator has resigned following the release of a video that has sparked Texas Governor Greg Abbott to call for an investigation.

The video, which has since gone viral, shows the administrator engaging in inappropriate behavior that has raised serious concerns among parents and community members. Governor Abbott has taken swift action, calling for a thorough investigation into the matter.

The resignation of the administrator comes as a blow to the Irving ISD community, who trusted this individual to uphold the values and standards of the district. The repercussions of this scandal are sure to be felt for some time to come.

As the investigation unfolds, it is crucial that transparency and accountability are maintained. Parents and students deserve to know the truth and have confidence that steps will be taken to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

Stay tuned for updates as more information becomes available on this developing story.

  • Census Director Santos resigns, making way for Trump’s pick : NPR

The director of the U.S. Census Bureau, Robert Santos, announced Thursday he is resigning, giving President Trump an early opportunity to nominate a new political appointee to lead the agency.

Arturo Vargas, chair of the bureau’s 2030 Census Advisory Committee, tells NPR that the committee’s members received an email announcement, a copy of which NPR has reviewed.

“It’s been such an honor to serve our nation,” Santos wrote Thursday in a LinkedIn post sharing NPR’s story after it was published. The bureau’s public information office did not immediately respond to NPR’s inquiries.

The decision by Santos, who started as the bureau’s director in 2022, cuts short a five-year appointment during key preparations for the 2030 census. The next constitutionally required head count of the country’s residents is set to be used to redistribute political representation and trillions in federal funding across the country over the next decade.

“It’s always important for an agency as large as the Census Bureau to have stability in its most senior position, and we’re at a critical point at the Census Bureau’s preparations for the 2030 decennial census,” says Vargas, the advisory committee chair, who is also the CEO for the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. “I’ll miss having somebody with the expertise and perspective that Santos has brought to the position as the bureau prepares for 2030.”

Santos — a nationally recognized statistician who is the first Latino to head the bureau — joined the federal government’s largest statistical agency as a Biden appointee after years of interference at the bureau by the first Trump administration.

Before becoming the agency’s director, Santos was a vocal opponent of how Trump officials handled the 2020 census — including a last-minute decision to end counting early during the COVID-19 pandemic and a failed push to add a question about U.S. citizenship status that was likely to deter many Latino and Asian American residents from participating in the official population tally.

During his three-year tenure, Santos made frequent outreach trips around the country in an attempt to rebuild public trust in the bureau’s leadership.

“It’s important for all Americans to understand that the bureau collects data for their benefit, and I think the outreach he oversaw helped rebuild confidence and interest in the Census Bureau’s work,” says Terri Ann Lowenthal, a census consultant who was once the staff director of the former House oversight subcommittee for the national tally.

Santos helped oversee the creation of a new committee of outside advisers for the 2030 census, as well as planned changes to how the bureau produces statistics on race and ethnicity, a now-dropped, controversial proposal to transform data about people with disabilities and research into how surveys can ask about sexual orientation and gender identity.

Many census watchers are concerned about who Trump names to be the bureau’s next director. The first director appointed by Trump, Steven Dillingham, stepped down in 2021 shortly after whistleblower complaints about an attempt to rush the release of an incomplete data report on non-U.S. citizens. Trump’s first administration also created multiple new positions for political appointees who had no obvious qualifications for serving at the bureau’s top ranks.

“Any attempt to fill the position with someone involved in partisan political activities will undermine public confidence not only in the bureau’s work but the nation’s statistics generally,” Lowenthal says.

In a surprising turn of events, Census Director Santos has announced his resignation, paving the way for President Trump’s pick to take over the important position. This unexpected development has left many wondering about the future of the census and what impact this change in leadership will have on the upcoming census data collection. PM Vučević resigns after student protests across Serbia

Speaking at a press conference in Belgrade, Vučević defended his government’s record, but admitted that Serbia “seemed to be stuck” with focus on the deadly collapse of a concrete canopy at a train station in Novi Sad last year and lamented “deep divisions in our society” it caused.

Vučević was mayor of Novi Sad when the renovations began.

He claimed, without offering any evidence, that students protests were supported by foreign powers and accused opposition of trying to make political capital on the accident.

He said he made his decision to resign after an incident last night in which a group of students was attacked in Novi Sad, with one woman seriously injured. She has since been released from hospital at her request.

Serbian state media reported that the incident broke out after students put anti-government stickers and graffiti in front of an office of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, or SNS.

“I expect the perpetrators of the attack will be arrested,” he said, condemning the attack.

But Vučević said “if there is any hope for us to return to social dialogue, we must talk.”

His government will remain in place until a new cabinet is picked or a snap election is called. A decision on next steps needs to be made within 30 days.

Serbian prime minister Miloš Vučević has resigned in the last few minutes.

His resignation comes just a day after Serbian students have staged a daylong blockage of a major traffic intersection in Belgrade with the support of farmers, stepping up pressure on the president, Aleksandar Vučić.

The wave of student-led demonstrations began as a protest against government corruption after the collapse of a roof of a railway station in the northern city of Novi Sad on 1 November, which killed 15 people.

His resignation comes after president Vučić sought to open a dialogue with the protesters and indicated on Monday he would reshuffle the government.

The wave of student-led demonstrations began as a protest against government corruption after the collapse of a roof of a railway station in the northern city of Novi Sad on 1 November, which killed 15 people.

On Monday, the demonstrators occupied the Autokomanda junction, where two major roads from the south-east converge on the way to Belgrade’s centre.

Frederiksen’s ‘top political speed dating’ over Greenland – snap reaction

Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen Photograph: Nadja Wohlleben/Reuters

Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen is expected in Paris shortly, where she is going to meet with French president Emmanuel Macron.

Our Nordic correspondent Miranda Bryant writes in on Frederiksen’s euro trip:

The last 24 hours have seen a raft of announcements – including on defence and tackling racism against Greenlandic people in Denmark – by the Danish government aimed at appeasing Greenlanders and the US as Donald Trump continues to target his attentions on attempting to acquire Denmark.

Now the Danish PM Mette Frederiksen is on a whistle stop European charm offensive to Berlin, Paris and Brussels in a bid to reassure her colleagues that Denmark has Europe’s full support if Trump follows through on his threats of a trade war.

In what Danish newspaper Berlingske describes as “a form of top political speed dating” she first met German chancellor Olaf Scholz and is later due to meet French president Emmanuel Macron and Nato secretary general Mark Rutte.

It has been a challenging January for Frederiksen which has seen Denmark singled out by the US and publicly threatened not just with tariffs but potential military intervention over Greenland.

On Sunday night, amid leaks of her reportedly “horrible” 45-minute call with the US president, she put on a show of Nordic unity by sharing a photo on social media of a very cosy looking dinner eating what looked like home-cooked food at a kitchen table with Norwegian PM Jonas Gahr Støre, Swedish PM Ulf Kristersson and Finnish president Alexander Stubb.

    Ukraine update

Speaking of Ukraine, here’s our latest briefing to bring you up to date on what is happening there.

Veterans’ help and healthcare among NGOs whose USAid funding has been cut off; Hungary steps aside from blocking Russia sanctions.

Here is what we know on day 1,070 of the war:

And here are some moving pictures from Kyiv-based photographer Vic Bákin who turned his camera on the crumbling homes and young, shaven-headed recruits that have symbolised the war with Russia

Ukraine ceasefire favourable to Russia remains top global risk to EU, experts say

A troop member of the 13 NGU Khartiia Brigade during a patrol in Lypsi, located on the Kharkiv front line, Kharkiv, Ukraine. Photograph: Maria Senovilla/EPA

The EU Institute for Security Studies and the Robert Schuman Centre at the European University Institute in Florence have published their 2025 report on global risks to the EU this morning. And it does not make for pretty reading.

The report, compiled by the EUI’s Veronica Anghel based on submissions from foreign policy experts across Europe, says that a ceasefire in Ukraine that would be favourable to Russia remains “the highest risk” to the bloc, given Ukraine role “as a critical shield for EU interest.”

The experts also warned that US isolationism “is as dangerous for Europe as a Russian nuclear strike,” with the latter seen as “the least likely risk,” despite worries about “new Russian military action in non-Nato neighbouring states.”

(Anghel jokingly admitted that experts failed to foresee the Greenland crisis.)

The study also raised alarm about “the risk of a disruptive cyber-attack on EU infrastructure,” classified as one of the top threats. “Variations in infrastructure resilience and cybercrime awareness across member states are likely to challenge EU policy coherent,” it said.

It also made a pointed comment on “the risk of subsea sabotage … growing, prompting Baltic states to take increasingly assertive measures to protect subsea infrastructure.”

On migration, the report warned against “large-scale irregular migration from the Middle East and north Africa and sub-Saharan Africa to the EU,” with a separate warning that this topic “has been instrumentalised by far-right forces to fragment EU politics.”

Responding to the report, Nato’s director of policy planning, Benedetta Berti, said this:

This really exemplifies, to me, what has been our dominant strategic assumption for the past few years, which is we are in the most complex, volatile and dangerous security environment that we have seen as transatlantic community, as Europeans, in the few generations.

… This is, in a nutshell, what we’ve been saying for since 2022 … which is, we’re not at war, but we’re not at peace [either]. This is not a peacetime threat assessment.

    Gulp.

    The full report is here.

‘Borders must not be moved by force,’ Scholz says in a swipe at Trump

Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen and German chancellor Olaf Scholz at a joint press conference in Berlin, Germany. Photograph: Mads Claus Rasmussen/EPA

Speaking alongside Frederiksen, German chancellor Olaf Scholz went further by making a very pointed remark on territorial integrity, which sounded like a swipe at Trump.

Speaking in German, seemingly about Ukraine, he said:

We will support Ukraine in the distribution of its sovereignty and its freedom, as long as it takes. With our partners in Washington That is why we now agree that this war must end, but it must not be a dictated peace. Putin must be clear that he is sending his soldiers into a senseless battle. The inviolability of borders is a fundamental principle of international law. Russia broke this principle with its attack on Ukraine …

    But then he went on:

The principle must apply to everyone. I made that clear again from this point a few days ago: Borders must not be moved by force.

Before adding, unusually, in English and with a stern look on his face:

    To whom it may concern.

‘Up to Europe to define the future of our continent,’ Danish PM says in Berlin

Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen at a joint press conference with German chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin today. Photograph: Filip Singer/EPA

Denmark’s Frederiksen spoke in Berlin over the last hour, where she begun her European tour meeting German chancellor Olaf Scholz.

She did not explicitly reference US president Donald Trump or Greenland, but let’s see if you can spot a certain theme or subtext in her comments.

This morning, we are facing more uncertain reality, a reality that calls for an even more united Europe and for more cooperation. Our ties are rooted in our history, our values, and in our interests, in Europe and also across the Atlantic. …

We need a stronger and a more resolute Europe standing increasingly in its own right, capable of defending and promoting Europe and the European interests. It is up to Europe to define the future of our continent. I think we have to take more responsibility for our own security. …

Europe, our continent, is based on the idea of that cooperation rather than confrontation will lead to peace, to progress, to prosperity, and let us honour that idea.

Now, quickly a final word on yesterday’s event in Oświęcim and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi German concentration camp in Auschwitz.

Our Europe correspondent Jon Henley was there and here is his report.

On a day of startling blue skies, Auschwitz survivors stood before princes and presidents on Monday to remind the world, perhaps for the final time, of the horrors they suffered there during one of the darkest moments of human history.

Beneath a white marquee erected in front of the gate to the former Nazi death camp, four former inmates – the youngest 86, the oldest 99 – warned world leaders on the 80th anniversary of its liberation against the danger of rising antisemitism.

Morning opening: With friends like these

    Jakub Krupa

Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen travels to Berlin, Paris and Brussels at short notice today as she seeks to seek European unity in response to US president Donald Trump’s repeated plans to “get” Greenland.

“Denmark is a small country with strong allies. And it is part of a strong European community where together we can meet the challenges we face. … With war on the continent and changes in geopolitical reality, … unity is crucial,” she said in a statement in Danish published last night.

Her trip comes after a similar show-of-unity meeting over the weekend when she hosted the prime ministers of Sweden and Norway and the president of Finland in Copenhagen for what looked like the cosiest, most relaxed dinner between world leaders ever.

From left Norway’s PM Jonas Gahr Støre, Swedish PM Ulf Kristersson, Finnish president Alexander Stubb, and Mette Frederiksen Photograph: Mette Frederiksen/Facebook

    But pictures can be deceiving.

On Monday, Denmark announced plans to invest £1.65bn ($2bn) to boost its security in the Arctic region with new ships, long-range drones, and satellites to help police the area. One of the priorities is tellingly named “asserting the sovereignty.” (No word on extra dog sleds, which Trump ridiculed last week.)

Defence minister Troels Lund Poulsen said the country’s intelligence services warned against a higher-than-usual threat level in the region. And presumably, they do not just mean the usual suspects in the Russians and the Chinese.

Even putting military pressure aside, the US is Denmark’s biggest export market, with pharmaceutical, machinery, and technical equipment top of the list. Any disruption – for example, through Trump’s favourite word, tariffs – would hurt and could easily escalate quickly as the EU would be expected to respond as a bloc.

Danish parliament speaker Søren Gade said this morning in the Danish press that Trump’s words on Greenland felt “like a kick in the gut” after years of close cooperation within Nato, with Danish troops joining US missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In a telling passage of his interview with the Politiken newspaper, he said he would usually trust the US and follow the country’s view on defence issues. Still, even he is bewildered by the current diplomatic crisis.

In line with what the Financial Times is reporting as a deliberate tactic to avoid further public confrontation with Trump, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas sought to play the situation down when she addressed reporters yesterday.

She backed Denmark but insisted that “we are not negotiating on Greenland,” and “we shouldn’t also go into speculation about what-ifs because this is not the situation right now.”

But the nerves are palpable, and Frederiksen will not want to take risks. That’s why she is off around Europe.

On Tuesday morning, she said that “we need a stronger and more resolute Europe, standing increasingly in its own right” in the context of growing Russian and Chinese challenges.

Could she mean someone else, too?

It’s Tuesday, 28 January 2025, and this is Europe live. It’s Jakub Krupa here.

    Good morning.

  • Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic resigns as anti-corruption protests grow

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Serbia’s populist Prime Minister Milos Vucevic said Tuesday he is stepping down following weeks of massive anti-corruption protests over the deadly collapse of a concrete canopy in November.

The canopy collapse, which killed 15 people in the northern city of Novi Sad, has become a flashpoint reflecting wider discontent with the increasingly autocratic rule of Serbia’s populist President Aleksandar Vucic. He has faced accusations of curbing democratic freedoms in Serbia despite formally seeking European Union membership for the troubled Balkan nation.

Vucevic told a news conference that his resignation is aimed at lowering tensions in Serbia.

“It is my appeal for everyone to calm down the passions and return to dialogue,” he said.

Novi Sad Mayor Milan Djuric also will step down on Tuesday, Vucevic said.

Vucevic’s resignation is likely to lead to an early parliamentary election. The resignation must be confirmed by Serbia’s parliament, which has 30 days to choose a new government or call a snap election.

On Monday, tens of thousands of people joined striking university students in a 24-hour blockade of a key traffic intersection in the Serbian capital. The students have been protesting for weeks, demanding accountability for the canopy collapse that critics have blamed on rampant government corruption.

In another attempt to defuse tensions, Vucic, Vucevic and Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic on Monday evening urged dialogue with the students, who have garnered widespread support from all walks of life in Serbia with their call for justice and accountability.

Vucevic said the immediate cause for his quitting was an attack on a female student in Novi Sad early Tuesday by assailants allegedly from the ruling Serbian Progressive Party. Vucevic said that “whenever it seems there is hope to return to social dialogue, to talk … it’s like an invisible hand creates a new incident and tensions mount again.”

Serbia’s prosecutors have filed charges against 13 people, including a government minister and several state officials. But the former Construction Minister Goran Vesic has been released from detention, fueling doubts over the investigation’s independence.

The main railway station in Novi Sad was renovated twice in recent years as part of a wider infrastructure deal with Chinese state companies.

Several incidents have marred the street demonstrations in the past weeks, including drivers ramming into the crowds on two occasions, when two young women were injured.

Students and others have been holding daily 15-minute traffic blockades throughout Serbia at 11:52 a.m., the exact same time the concrete canopy crashed down on Nov. 1. The blockades honor the 15 victims, including two children.

Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic has announced his resignation amidst growing anti-corruption protests in the country. Vucevic, who has been in office since 2017, cited the need for a new leadership to address the demands of the protesters.

The protests, which have been ongoing for weeks, have been fueled by allegations of government corruption and a lack of transparency in the political system. Demonstrators have called for Vucevic’s resignation and for a more accountable government.

In his resignation speech, Vucevic acknowledged the concerns of the protesters and expressed his hope that his resignation would help pave the way for positive change in Serbia. He also called for calm and unity among the people as the country transitions to a new government.

The resignation of Vucevic marks a significant moment in Serbia’s political landscape and has the potential to bring about much-needed reforms. It remains to be seen who will succeed him as Prime Minister and how they will address the demands of the protesters. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
