  • Arch Manning: ‘I don’t think I’ve done enough yet to be taking a lot of pictures at restaurants and signing autographs’

Arch Manning doesn’t feel like he’s done enough as a college quarterback to be one of the most recognizable players in the sport.

In an interview with ESPN published Thursday, Manning touched on myriad topics ahead of his first season as Texas’ starting quarterback. The former five-star recruit was Quinn Ewers’ backup during the 2024 season and is set to be Texas’ No. 1 QB in 2025 with Ewers off to the NFL.

When asked what comes with his famous last name, the nephew of Super Bowl winners Peyton and Eli Manning and grandson of Archie Manning didn’t hesitate to talk about the attention he gets for being a Manning.

“I think a lot of undeserved attention,” Manning said. “But hopefully it gets more deserving in the next few months.

“I don’t think I’ve done enough yet to be taking a lot of pictures at restaurants and signing autographs. But maybe that will come eventually.”

Manning signed with the Longhorns and head coach Steve Sarkisian ahead of the 2023 season as the top high school recruit in the country. He came to Austin with Ewers entrenched as the starter following his first season in Austin after a transfer from Ohio State.

Manning opened that season as the Longhorns’ No. 3 QB, but served as the primary backup when Ewers was sidelined because of a shoulder injury and in the College Football Playoff, when No. 2 QB Maalik Murphy transferred.

After some spot duty in 2023, Manning saw his first significant playing time in 2024 when Ewers suffered a strained oblique in September. Manning took over for Ewers against UTSA after Ewers was injured and started against Louisiana-Monroe and Mississippi State before Ewers returned for the annual rivalry game vs. Oklahoma.

Manning scored five touchdowns in that UTSA game, but had just eight others over the other nine games he appeared in across the 2024 season. He finished 63-of-95 passing for 969 yards and nine passing touchdowns with two interceptions.

Now, he’ll get a full offseason as the presumptive starter with Ewers off to the NFL. And it’s likely that the Texas offense we saw in 2024 will be considerably different in 2025. Manning — who said he believed his game most resembled his grandfather Archie’s — rushed for four touchdowns last season and is a more dynamic rushing threat than Ewers. We may not see Manning run a lot in 2025, but his ability to get first downs with his legs will assuredly be an integral part of the playbook.

“I think he fits his offense and his play-calling to his players,” Manning said of Sarkisian. “That’s what I like most about him. He’s smart and he’s innovative and he wants to win. He’s a competitive guy. He works really hard, prepares and he gets us in the right position to win games.”

Arch Manning, the star quarterback from Isidore Newman School in New Orleans, is making headlines once again. Despite being one of the most highly touted high school football players in the country, the humble 17-year-old is staying grounded and focused on his goals.

In a recent interview, Manning opened up about the attention and pressure that comes with being a member of the famous Manning football family. “I don’t think I’ve done enough yet to be taking a lot of pictures at restaurants and signing autographs,” he said. “I still have a lot of work to do and a lot to prove.”

Manning’s maturity and humility have earned him respect both on and off the field. With offers from top college football programs pouring in, he remains level-headed and focused on improving his game every day.

As he continues to navigate the spotlight and expectations that come with his last name, one thing is clear: Arch Manning is a rising star who is determined to let his performance on the field speak for itself. Watch out for this young talent as he continues to make waves in the football world.

  • Restaurants begin implementing service charges preparing for tipped wage hike

FARMINGTON, Mich. (WXYZ) — The Michigan minimum wage is expected to increase for tipped workers starting Feb. 21.

Some are celebrating the bump while others including some restaurant owners are worried they won’t be able to sustain the hike. That includes John Cowley & Sons Irish Pub in Farmington, which recently implemented a 20% service charge to prepare for the change.

The 20 percent surcharge at John Cowley & Son's in Farmington

    WXYZ

The 20 percent surcharge at John Cowley & Son’s in Farmington

Last summer, the Michigan Supreme Court reinstated a 2018 law that state Republicans at the time blocked to increase the tipped wage and amount of sick time leave for workers. With the Supreme Court’s decision, the increase of $5.99 per hour for tipped workers is expected to go into effect next month.

“This business model cannot support what they’re trying to do,” John Cowley & Sons owner Greg Cowley said. “It will put a lot of restaurants down.”

Previous coverage: New year brings new minimum wage to Michigan, but some don’t want the raise

New year brings new minimum wage to Michigan, but some don’t want the raise

To keep the restaurant open, Cowley says he had to make the decision of letting go staff or implementing some sort of service charge. He says laying off staff was not an option for him.

“I’ve got about 16 servers… I can’t run the building without 16 servers. I need that kind of labor,” he said. “Pretty easy decision for me to basically say I’m leaving my menu prices where they are at and the margins that I expected, and I’m just taking the money out of the right pocket and putting it in the left where basically the surcharge is flipped over and is now in their salary.”

Republican Rep. Bill Schuette is chair of the newly formed select committee Protecting Michigan Employees and Small Businesses. He says he is working around the clock to make sure that raise does not happen.

“Unless the Legislature acts, we’re going to see an elimination of the tip credit, which is going to not only put additional costs on your family when you’re going out to eat but also will rob restaurant workers of their hard-earned tipped wages, which is a key part of their income,” Schuette said. “Our restaurant workers, the restaurant industry, they’re facing a freight train that is bearing down on them come Feb. 21. And that’s because of a ruling the Supreme Court has made.”

However, advocacy groups like One Fair Wage disagree, saying that workers will now have a higher wage as well as their tips.

“The tips aren’t going away on Feb. 22. This is about raising the base wage with tips on top, and every restaurant worker across Michigan will earn more money come Feb. 21,” former state legislator and One Fair Wage senior adviser Dave Woodward said. “I think what the Republican-controlled statehouse is doing is absolutely shameful. They’re doing the exact same thing that their predecessors did six years ago: scheming with the big corporate lobbies to deny workers in Michigan a wage increase and the ability to earn paid sick time.”

Former State Representative and current One Fair Wage senior adviser Dave Woodward

    WXYZ

Former State Representative and current One Fair Wage senior adviser Dave Woodward

Warren resident Hannah Gregory says despite the possible surcharges statewide, she’ll still tip.

“I have family that have worked in service industries and I just know how much their tips mean to them and to their families, so I just think you have to take care of your neighbors,” she said.

Scheutte and other House Republicans have two bills that would reinstate the tip credit and address the sick time policy, hoping to get those on the House floor by Thursday.

As the minimum wage for tipped workers continues to rise in many states across the country, restaurants are beginning to implement service charges to help offset the increased labor costs.

With the tipped minimum wage set to increase to $15 an hour in some states, restaurant owners are looking for ways to ensure their staff is fairly compensated while also maintaining profitability.

By adding a service charge to customers’ bills, restaurants can redistribute the funds to their employees in a more equitable manner. This allows all staff members, not just servers, to benefit from the increased revenue.

While some customers may be hesitant to pay a service charge on top of their bill, many restaurants are finding that customers are willing to support fair wages for their service industry workers.

Overall, the implementation of service charges is seen as a positive step towards ensuring that restaurant workers are paid fairly for their labor. As the tipped wage hike continues to roll out across the country, it is likely that more restaurants will follow suit in implementing service charges to support their staff.

  • McDonald’s fans race to restaurants over ‘nostalgic’ Happy Meal toys: ‘consider me done for’

Fast food fans can now purchase ‘nostalgic’ Happy Meal toys at McDonald’s.

The restaurant empire brought back its fan-favorite Happy Meal toys for a limited time at participating locations nationwide on January 21.

The promotion, which McDonald’s dubbed ‘Dragon Discovery,’ gives customers the chance to score a Pokémon card pack with their meals.

‘Catch me at McDonald’s tomorrow ordering a happy meal all for the Pokémon cards,’ an X user tweeted.

Each meal comes with a four-card pack, a double-sided poster, and stickers.

The fast-food chain has 15 cards in this year’s collection with characters like Eevee, Hatenna, and Jigglypuff.

Customers’ ‘Dragon Discovery’ Happy Meal comes in one of four Pokémon-themed boxes featuring Charizard, Dragonite & Pikachu, Rayquaza, and Roaring Moon.

The cards will only be available until February 24, and caused a social media frenzy on X.

Several X users were thrilled to learn about the return of the Pokémon cards.

‘Second day, I’m going to McDonald’s with my boys for the new pokemon happy meal. Sorry, not sorry,’ an X user tweeted.

‘Bruhhhh thoose are so sick really hoping I will be able to snag some,’ another X user wrote.

‘And it’s perfect to end it on February because is their 29th anniversary of Pokemon,’ a fan pointed out on X.

Others were more interested in thinking about the scalpers that will only purchase the cards and not the Happy Meals.

‘Finally a use for my reward points. Unless the scalpers get them first. Somehow,’ an X user wrote.

‘I can already see scalpers in the drive-thru, “Uhhhhh, I’ll take 100 happy meals, all chicken nuggets with extra fries,”‘ another X user joked.

‘Cant wait for scalpers to buy over 100 happy meals just so they can have the cards and sell them over high prices,’ a fan tweeted.

‘You get the older Sets for like less than 5 Bucks. This wont be any different,’ a fan responded

The Pokémon cards became an annual toy at McDonald’s in 2011, and collections have been released nearly every year since.

All cards usually have exclusive McDonald’s numbering, and its holo cards (cards with shiny finish) have confetti-patterned holofoil only used for the restaurant chain’s promotions.

From 2011 to 2019, McDonald’s included 12 Pokémon cards in its yearly collections in the US.

The fast food empire updated its collection to include 25 cards in 2021.

The company then trimmed the card collections down to 15 for its 2022 2023 collections.

McDonald’s did not hold the annual promotion at its US locations in 2013, 2020, and 2024.

However, the fast food chain made up for it by starting it up in New Zealand and France last year and will launch it in Austria later this month.

Besides the Pokémon promotion, McDonald’s is running its $5 Meal Deal and Buy One, Add One for $1 offers on its all-new McValue platform.

McDonald’s franchisees nationwide are also offering special deals on fan-favorite products, according to the company’s press release.

‘I’ll admit – it’s tough to choose between some of my favorites sometimes, but now I don’t have to,’ McDonald’s ‘Value Champion‘ John Cena said.

The fast food chain finished off its third quarter on September 30, 2024, with $6.87 billion in revenue.

Experts at Forbes have predicted McDonald’s total revenue for the fiscal 2024 year will be $26.2 billion.

The 2024 fiscal year results will be announced in its upcoming earnings report, which is set to be released on February 10.

McDonald’s fans are racing to restaurants across the country in search of the beloved Happy Meal toys from their childhood. With the fast-food chain recently announcing a collaboration with popular toy company Hasbro, fans are eager to get their hands on these nostalgic treasures.

Social media has been flooded with posts from excited customers sharing their latest finds and reminiscing about their favorite Happy Meal toys from years past. From classic characters like Barbie and Hot Wheels to newer favorites like My Little Pony and Transformers, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

One fan tweeted, “Just scored the My Little Pony toy from McDonald’s and I couldn’t be happier! Consider me done for, I’ll be collecting them all.” Another fan posted, “I can’t believe McDonald’s brought back the McNugget Buddies! My childhood is officially complete.”

It’s clear that these Happy Meal toys hold a special place in the hearts of many, and fans are willing to go to great lengths to add them to their collections. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just looking to relive a bit of nostalgia, be sure to visit your local McDonald’s before these limited-edition toys are gone for good.

  • Revival restaurants abruptly close all Twin Cities locations

Locations were added and menu options grew, but a change for the St. Paul restaurant earlier this year, when the menu expanded to add Chicago-style beef sandwiches and tavern-style pizzas, might have been the Hail Mary pass that didn’t catch on with the enthusiasm the company needed to move forward.

“With St. Paul, we were trying to interject some fun and find a path forward,” Boemer said. “The worst part is that our team right now is amazing across the board. That is the hardest thing. Across four restaurants, we were trying to steer the Titanic. That only happens by the hard work and grace by the people you’re surrounded by and they all gave it all.”

And now, in the midst of the slowest season in the industry, more than 100 restaurant workers are — without notice — without jobs.

Co-owner Rancone said the decision came after a hard look at the company’s finances. “Anything but a sudden closure would have put our staff and vendors at risk of not getting paid,” he said.

Boemer added his perspective saying, “It’s been a very difficult few years. We fought through COVID. There are a lot of people in our industry having a really hard time right now. January and February are hard on restaurants. Winter is a difficult time and this one was ferocious.”

As to the nature of the announcement, he conceded: “The abruptness is hard. It’s hard, but it’s part of the nature of how these things come and go. Sadly, restaurants are not a forever thing.”

In a shocking turn of events, Revival restaurants have announced the abrupt closure of all their Twin Cities locations. Known for their delicious Southern comfort food and popular fried chicken, fans of the restaurant chain are left devastated by the sudden news.

The closure comes as a surprise to many, as Revival had garnered a loyal following in the Twin Cities food scene. The reasons behind the closures have not been disclosed by the restaurant management, leaving customers and employees alike in the dark.

Many are left wondering what will happen to their favorite dishes and where they will go to satisfy their cravings for Revival’s signature fare. The sudden closure serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by restaurants in the ever-changing and competitive industry.

As Twin Cities foodies mourn the loss of Revival, they are left with memories of memorable meals and hopes that another restaurant will fill the void left by the beloved chain.

  • Houston restaurants collecting money for New Orleans terror attack victims

Houston restaurants collecting money for New Orleans terror attack victims

    Here’s how you can help.

HOUSTON — The world continues to mourn the 14 lives lost in Wednesday’s devastating Bourbon Street terror attack.

Several Houstonians have close ties to New Orleans. Maybe nowhere is it more evident than in the restaurant business.

Several business owners are working around the clock to connect with those who need financial assistance because for some this fight is personal.

Cooking oysters is one of Jackquel Johnson and Royal Bellock’s favorite places to be.

“I really been cooking, man, my whole life, man,” Bellock said.

The co-owners of Oyster King Tiger 2 Dozen make sure every recipe is a love letter to family.

The northwest Houston staple is serving up a taste of the couple’s hometown, New Orleans. The oysters they’re making this week hold a little more meaning to them.

Through Sunday a percentage of oyster sales will benefit the victims of the Bourbon Street tragedy.

“Something to be able to give back, you know, to the city, you know, we, we’ve been in New Orleans our whole life, we love New Orleans,” Johnson said.

This is one of several restaurants stepping up to help the New Orleans community.

“When we had seen that atrocious terrorist activity that happened in New Orleans they just stepped up to the plate,” community activist Dr. Candice Matthews said.

Dr. Matthews has worked with several local restaurants on a number of fundraisers. This one is personal.

“It’s very tied, Texas and Louisiana,” Dr. Mathews said.

At Quotes on the north side, owner Kevin McCraw said he sees those ties daily, which is why he will be matching donations collected at his restaurant this week.

“We get a lot of people here that are from New Orleans. A lot of our customers are from New Orleans. A lot of our guests drive here from New Orleans,” McCraw said.

McCraw’s guests have turned into family and he will do anything for them, especially in the face of tragedy.

“This terrorist individual, he’s not Houston. He doesn’t represent Houston. We represent Houston. Let’s show them what Houston is about,” McCraw said.

There is a way for you to help from home.
