  • Senate hearings for Trump nominees resume on Capitol Hill

The Senate will have separate committee hearings for three of President Donald Trump’s administration nominees on Wednesday, including former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is considered one of his more vulnerable picks.

At approximately 10 a.m. on Wednesday, hearings for both Kennedy in the Finance Committee and Howard Lutnick in the Commerce Committee will begin.

Trump picked Kennedy to lead the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), while Lutnick is the president’s choice for Commerce secretary.

In the afternoon, Kelly Loeffler goes before the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. The hearing for Trump’s pick to lead the Small Business Administration starts at 3:30 p.m.

Several of Trump’s nominees have already been confirmed, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Transportation Secretary-designate Sean Duffy.

While the Hegseth confirmation came down to the wire, with Vice President JD Vance being needed to break a tie in the Senate, there’s been some indication that other Trump nominees such as Kennedy, former Democrat Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and potentially Kash Patel will have their own uphill battles to getting confirmed.

Gabbard is Trump’s choice to be director of national intelligence, and Patel was nominated to lead the FBI.

While the Finance Committee will ultimately vote on whether to advance Kennedy’s nomination to the Senate floor, he will also have a hearing on Thursday before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions because of the position’s relevance to public health.

Senators on both sides of the aisle in the Finance Committee are expected to ask Kennedy for clarifications on his past statements regarding vaccines and how he would apply his beliefs if confirmed to lead HHS.

After a brief pause for the holiday season, Senate hearings for President Trump’s nominees have resumed on Capitol Hill. With a new Congress in session, lawmakers are once again scrutinizing the qualifications and potential conflicts of interest of the candidates being put forward for various positions in the administration.

Among the nominees facing confirmation hearings are individuals being considered for key roles in the departments of Justice, Homeland Security, and Health and Human Services. Senators on both sides of the aisle are expected to ask tough questions and demand transparency from the nominees as they seek to ensure that only the most qualified individuals are appointed to these important positions.

As the hearings progress, it remains to be seen how contentious the confirmation process will become, particularly in light of the ongoing political climate and recent controversies surrounding the Trump administration. Stay tuned for updates on the Senate hearings and the fate of President Trump’s nominees on Capitol Hill.

  • State Department Permits Distribution of H.I.V. Medications to Resume — for Now

The Trump administration on Tuesday issued a waiver for lifesaving medicines and medical services, offering a reprieve for a worldwide H.I.V. treatment program that was halted last week.

The waiver, announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, seemed to allow for the distribution of H.I.V. medications, but whether the waiver extended to preventive drugs or other services offered by the program, the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, was not immediately clear.

Still, PEPFAR’s future remains in jeopardy, with potential consequences for more than 20 million people — including 500,000 children — who could lose access to lifesaving medications. Without treatment, millions of people with H.I.V. in low-income countries would be at risk of full-blown AIDS and of premature death.

“We can very rapidly return to where the pandemic is exploding, like it was back in the 1980s,” said Dr. Steve Deeks, an H.I.V. expert at the University of California, San Francisco.

“This really cannot happen,” he said.

On Monday, the Trump administration ordered health organizations in other countries to immediately stop distributing H.I.V. medications purchased with U.S. aid. The directive stemmed from a freeze — which may become permanent — in the activities of PEPFAR, a $7.5 billion program overseen by the State Department.

Since it started in 2003, PEPFAR is estimated to have saved more than 25 million lives; more than 5.5 million children have been born free of H.I.V. who otherwise would have been infected.

In South Africa alone, PEPFAR’s shutdown would add more than a half million new H.I.V. infections and more than 600,000 related deaths over the next decade, according to one estimate.

The organization employs 270,000 doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health workers. They had been told not to report to work or to serve patients.

PEPFAR’s end would “create instability and potentially collapse several countries’s AIDS programs that will be difficult to repair, if and when PEPFAR funding becomes available again,” said Dr. Salim Abdool Karim, an infectious disease epidemiologist at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa.

Dr. Abdool Karim said countries should stop relying on PEPFAR and support their own citizens, a goal that the program’s staff and partners had been working toward. But ideally that shift would happen gradually, over years during which PEPFAR would train local health workers and prepare them for the transition, he said.

“This is not a bad opportunity for countries to take greater responsibility,” he said. “But I think they can’t do it if it’s done in this kind of haphazard and unplanned way.”

Here’s what he and others expect from PEPFAR’s unexpected pause.

Every day, more than 220,000 people pick up H.I.V. medications at clinics funded by PEPFAR; the number included more than 7,400 children under 15, according to data published on Tuesday by AMFAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research.

The drugs work by suppressing H.I.V. in the body. When patients go off the drugs, the virus grabs the opportunity to rebound — and quickly. Within a week, H.I.V. levels will skyrocket from undetectable levels to more than 100,000 copies per milliliter of blood.

“That may be a time where you are very much at risk of passing the virus on to others,” Dr. Sallie Permar, a pediatrician and H.I.V. expert at Weill Cornell Medicine, said.

Then, the virus will start attacking a certain type of immune cell, crippling the body’s ability to fend off other infections, including tuberculosis, which frequently accompanies H.I.V. infection.

Spiking H.I.V. levels at first may cause flulike symptoms, including sore throat, swollen glands and fatigue. The immune system will likely marshal enough force to suppress the virus temporarily, but H.I.V. is adept at hiding until it finds the right opportunity to re-emerge.

When that occasion arises, “they can develop AIDS and progress,” Dr. Deeks said.

PEPFAR is best known for financing H.I.V. treatment programs, but its funds also go to drugs for prevention, outreach and testing, and to support for orphans and women experiencing gender-based violence.

The loss of resources for each of these efforts will derail the fight against AIDS, said Dr. Glenda Gray, a pediatric H.I.V. expert at Wits University in South Africa.

“If H.I.V. testing falls by the wayside, it’s unlikely that we will be able to even diagnose people who need to go into treatment,” she said.

If a pregnant or breastfeeding woman has H.IV. but is not tested and not treated, she may pass the virus to her child. The higher her viral load, the more likely this is to occur.

Children with H.I.V. are less likely to be diagnosed than adults, and may not be treated till the virus makes them visibly very sick. This progression can be much more rapid in children than in adults, Dr. Gray said, “and obviously, children who are untreated are likely to die.”

As people lose access to medications, they may try to spread out their supplies by alternating days or to share their pills with others. If the virus replicates in people with only partial protection, it can learn to evade those defenses and become resistant to the medications.

People living with the virus may then pass the resistant virus on to others.

“That becomes a big problem, because now, suddenly, our cheap first-line drugs might not work when we have to restart them on treatment,” Dr. Abdool Karim said.

A virus that is resistant to treatments will also be better at evading vaccine candidates being tested.

“Not only are we looking at more drug resistance, but we’re looking at losing whatever ability we had to make an effective vaccine,” Dr. Permar said.

More than one million Americans are living with the virus, and more than 30,000 become infected each year. If H.I.V. becomes resistant to available medications, it isn’t likely to remain in low-income countries. Americans, too, will be at risk.

They may also face indirect harms from ending PEPFAR. Creating huge populations of immunocompromised people may mean that other pathogens have an opportunity to spread. For example, dangerous Covid variants, including Omicron, are thought to have evolved in immunocompromised people with H.I.V.

At the same time, people worldwide have benefited from trials conducted under PEPFAR’s auspices, showing the importance of treating H.I.V. early, demonstrating that pregnant women can safely breastfeed as long as they are treated and that H.I.V. infections can be prevented with long-acting drugs.

“America has gotten an amazing amount of love around the world because of what it’s done,” Dr. Deeks said.

“From a humanitarian perspective, I can’t imagine anyone really wants to go along this pathway,” he added. “This doesn’t make any sense on any level.”

The State Department has announced that it will permit the distribution of H.I.V. medications to resume, at least temporarily. This decision comes after a temporary halt in shipments of the life-saving drugs due to a dispute over funding between the U.S. government and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.

The halt in shipments had raised concerns about the potential impact on the health and well-being of millions of people living with H.I.V. around the world. Many advocacy groups and health experts had warned that the interruption in medication distribution could lead to dire consequences, including drug resistance and increased transmission of the virus.

The State Department’s decision to allow the distribution of H.I.V. medications to resume is a welcome relief for those who rely on these drugs to stay healthy and alive. However, it is unclear how long this temporary reprieve will last, and there are still concerns about the long-term sustainability of funding for these essential medications.

Advocates are urging the U.S. government to work with other countries and international organizations to ensure that funding for H.I.V. medications remains stable and reliable. In the meantime, those who depend on these life-saving drugs can breathe a temporary sigh of relief knowing that their access to treatment has been restored — for now.

  • South Carolina women’s basketball sticks at No. 2 spot in ranking despite country’s best resume

South Carolina women’s basketball added another top 5 victory this weekend (a 66-56 smothering of the LSU Tigers) to move their overall record to 19-1 and their conference mark to a perfect 7-0. Since losing to UCLA back in November, the Gamecocks have been the country’s most impressive team. Because of their 14-game win streak (with each victory coming by double-digit points), Dawn Staley’s squad is closing the gap on the Bruins at the top of the AP top 25.

    [Win tickets: South Carolina-Auburn WBB]

When the Associated Press updated its rankings on Monday, South Carolina remained at No. 2. Once again, the Gamecocks earned one first-place vote despite growing sentiment nationally that they are the most impressive group in the country. Last week, USC picked up just one first-place vote, as well. However, this week, Notre Dame’s two first-place votes disappeared. Both votes moved over to UCLA.

UCLA has held onto the country’s top spot for the last two months, and the Bruins deserve it. Cori Close’s team remains undefeated (the only team in college basketball with that distinction), beat the Gamecocks head-to-head, and dispatched a top-10 Maryland team by double figures on Sunday.

Even so, South Carolina women’s basketball owns the best resume in the country.

The Gamecocks lead the country with both nine Quad 1 victories and 12 combined Quad 1 and Quad 2 wins. If UCLA slips up, even once, Carolina will overtake them in the rankings.

Southern Cal, LSU, and Ohio State all match the Gamecocks with just one loss, but the trio combine for just 11 total Quad 1 wins. With a win on Monday night, South Carolina then would be just one victory off of that number.

You can see the entire AP top 25 below (first-place votes in parentheses):

    1. UCLA Bruins (31)
    2. South Carolina Gamecocks (1)
    3. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
    4. Southern Cal Trojans
    5. Texas Longhorns
    6. UConn Huskies
    7. LSU Tigers
    8. Ohio State Buckeyes
    9. TCU Horned Frogs
    10. Duke Blue Devils
    11. Kansas State Wildcats
    12. Kentucky Wildcats
    13. Oklahoma Sooners
    14. Maryland Terrapins
    15. North Carolina Tar Heels
    16. Michigan State Spartans
    17. NC State Wolfpack

This week, South Carolina will play two more conference opponents.

First, on Monday night, the Gamecocks will play a road contest against the Tennessee Lady Volunteers. ESPN2 will broadcast the 7:00 p.m. contest, while the ESPN app will make it available for streaming.

Then, on Sunday, Carolina will return home to play the Auburn Tigers. A Noon tip-off, the Gamecocks and Tigers will play on SEC Network and the ESPN app.

South Carolina women’s basketball continues to dominate the court as they hold onto their No. 2 spot in the rankings, despite boasting the country’s best resume. The Gamecocks have been on fire this season, showcasing their skill, teamwork, and determination in every game they play.

With an impressive record and a lineup of talented players, South Carolina is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in women’s college basketball. Their strong defense, fast-paced offense, and relentless work ethic have earned them wins against some of the top teams in the nation.

Even though they may not hold the top spot in the rankings, South Carolina is still making a statement with their performance on the court. Fans can expect to see more exciting games and impressive victories from this powerhouse team as they continue their journey towards greatness.

So keep an eye on South Carolina women’s basketball as they show the world why they deserve to be recognized as one of the best teams in the country. This is a team that is not to be underestimated, and they are ready to take on any challenge that comes their way.

  • “It’s time to capitalise” – Arteta calls for focus as Gunners resume Euro quest – Arseblog News

After six Champions League group games, Arsenal sit third out of 36 teams and look well-positioned to secure a top-eight finish, which would see them bypass a two-legged knockout round play-off in February.

Given the Gunners’ hectic schedule, it’s a reward they are desperate to secure, especially as it would free up time in the calendar for a restorative mid-season trip to Dubai.

While it’s not guaranteed, Opta simulations suggest that 16 points should be enough to secure automatic qualification. A win against Dinamo Zagreb at the Emirates on Wednesday could prove decisive.

With that in mind, Mikel Arteta is calling for full focus.

“So far we’ve done really well, we’re in a really strong position and now it’s time to capitalise at home on all the work that we’ve done for many months,” he told his pre-game press conference.

“We need a strong performance today against a really good side, and we’ll try to do that.”

Asked about the prospect of a warm-weather training camp, he added: “My thinking is let’s do what we have to do first, which is always difficult because we’re talking about the Champions League, and if we manage to do that, obviously we’ll have the best ideas on the table to make the right decision, hopefully.

“It was very helpful [last year]. I mean, with the schedule that we had for the last three months, you can have a break and reset a little bit, work on things, and rest some people.”

Zagreb should pose an interesting challenge for Arteta and his backroom team. Since their last competitive game – a 3-2 domestic win over Varazdin on 22 December – they’ve sacked manager Sergej Jakirovic and brought in Italian legend Fabio Cannavaro.

The 51-year-old’s coaching career includes stints in Dubai, China, and Saudi Arabia, before an unsuccessful five months with Serie B outfit Benevento. He also had a brief spell at Udinese, helping them avoid relegation before parting ways.

In his new role, Cannavaro has only overseen a couple of friendly matches during the Croatian season’s traditional winter break.

“That’s the context of the game a little bit,” noted Arteta. “With a new coach and the fact that they haven’t played a competitive match for a month.

“Obviously, we know the games that they’ve played—their friendlies, we watched. And just to try to gather ideas and more principles, basically, than systems and formations, because Fabio’s played different formations in China compared to when he was in Italy, and now as well.

“So, [our task is] to actually understand what they’re going to do, not just the idea behind it. We’ll adapt to that tomorrow.”

As for who will pose the biggest threat for the visitors, all eyes will be on the highly-rated Martin Baturina. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder has seven assists and two goals in 23 appearances this season and is tipped for a bright future.

“I don’t like to talk about individuals, but they do have a lot of talent. They have some individuals that catch your eye because you have in your head all the players that play in that club and what they’ve done in the past.

“So, yeah, it’s always a good league and a great club to follow.”

It should be an interesting occasion for Gabriel Magalhaes, who spent some time on loan with Zagreb from Lille in 2018. Having only played one game during that stint, he’ll be keen to show them what they missed.

On the topic of players who have represented both clubs, Eduardo da Silva visited London Colney today to meet the Arsenal squad.

The Brazil-born Croatia international was the first player to score a competitive goal at Emirates Stadium back in 2006, a feat that convinced Arsene Wenger to sign him. Known for his clinical finishing, he quickly became a fan favourite before that horrific leg break at Birmingham City nearly ended his career.

“We didn’t play together, but obviously it’s a really familiar face with a very specific history,” said Arteta. “He became very important and very loved here. And then, the career he had there. So, very good to see people coming back that they’ve been here with a big smile on their faces.”

“It’s time to capitalise” – Arteta calls for focus as Gunners resume Euro quest

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has called on his players to maintain their focus as they prepare to resume their Europa League campaign. The Gunners will face Benfica in the first leg of their round of 32 tie on Thursday, and Arteta is keen for his team to make the most of this opportunity.

Speaking ahead of the game, Arteta stressed the importance of capitalising on the momentum they have built in recent weeks. “We have been performing well in the league and we need to carry that form into Europe,” he said. “This is a crucial stage of the competition and we need to be at our best.”

Arsenal have been in impressive form in recent weeks, with key players such as Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe stepping up to the plate. Arteta will be hoping for more of the same from his players as they look to progress in the Europa League.

With a top-four finish in the Premier League looking increasingly unlikely, the Europa League represents Arsenal’s best chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League. Arteta knows the importance of this competition and will be urging his players to give their all in pursuit of success.

As the Gunners gear up for their clash with Benfica, Arteta’s message is clear – it’s time to capitalise. Arsenal have the quality to go far in this competition, but they will need to stay focused and maintain their form if they are to achieve their goals. The journey starts now, and Arteta will be hoping that his players rise to the occasion and deliver when it matters most.

  • NHL On Tap: Crosby seeks to resume point chase for Penguins at Panthers

NHL On Tap: Crosby seeks to resume point chase for Penguins at Panthers

Welcome to the NHL On Tap, a daily look at the games on the NHL schedule. There are five games on the schedule for Friday, including one televised nationally in the United States and Canada.

    Games of the day

Pittsburgh Penguins at Florida Panthers (7 p.m. ET; SN-PIT, SCRIPPS, NHLN, SNO, SNE, SN360)

Sidney Crosby is five points from passing Joe Sakic for ninth place on the NHL all-time scoring list and will continue his chase when the Penguins (17-17-5) visit the defending Stanley Cup Champion Panthers (23-14-2). The Pittsburgh captain has six assists in his past four games and has overtaken Mario Lemieux as the Penguins’ all-time assists leader; Crosby has 1,035 career assists, two more than Lemieux. Crosby has 1,637 points (602 goals, 1,035 assists) in 1,311 games and is 86 points behind Lemieux as Pittsburgh’s all-time leading scorer; Lemieux had 1,723 points (690 goals, 1,033 assists) in 915 games. Florida has lost three of its past four games — including 4-0 losses at home to the Tampa Bay Lightning and Montreal Canadiens on Dec. 23 and 28. Center Sam Reinhart leads the Panthers with 45 points (22 goals, 23 assists) in 39 games, but does not have a point in his past four games.

Anaheim Ducks at Edmonton Oilers (9 p.m. ET; SNW, KCOP-13, Victory+)

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl each look to extend his scoring streak to 13 games when the Oilers (22-12-3) host the Ducks (16-17-4). The two can become the first set of Edmonton teammates with simultaneous 13-game point streaks since Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier overlapped for 14 games from Oct. 31-Nov. 29, 1987. Draisaitl has 24 points (10 goals, 14 assists) on his 12-game streak, while McDavid has 23 points (three goals, 20 assists) on his. Draisaitl’s run has lifted him into a second-place tie with Colorado Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen in the NHL scoring race with 56 points (27 goals, 29 assists) in 37 games, behind Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon, who has 64 points (14 goals, 50 assists) in 39 games. Edmonton is 9-2-1 in its past 12 games following a 4-1 win against the Utah Hockey Club on Tuesday. Anaheim will try to extend its winning streak to a season-high four games following a 4-3 overtime win at the League-leading Winnipeg Jets on Thursday. Forward Troy Terry had two goals and an assist in the victory and six points (four goals, two assists) on a four-game point streak.

Montreal Canadiens at Chicago Blackhawks (8 p.m. ET; CHSN, TSN2, RDS)

The Blackhawks (12-24-2) will play their first game since a 6-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues in the Discover NHL Winter Classic at Wrigley Field on Tuesday, with Chicago seeking to avoid what would be a season-high six-game losing streak. Center Connor Bedard had an assist for the Blackhawks in the Winter Classic and can extend his point streak to an NHL career high six games; he has seven points (three goals, four assists) on a five-game run. The Canadiens (17-17-3) are 6-1-0 in their past seven games and can extend their winning streak to a season-high four games. Forward Emil Heineman had a goal in a 3-2 win at the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday and has points in six of his past seven games (seven points; three goals, four assists).

    Other Friday games

Ottawa Senators at St. Louis Blues (8 p.m. ET; FDSNMW, TSN5, RDS2)

The Senators (19-16-2) are 4-3-0 in the first seven games of a season-long nine-game road trip necessitated by the IIHF World Junior Championship, being played in Ottawa. The Blues (18-17-4) are playing their first game after defeating the Blackhawks in the Discover NHL Winter Classic on Tuesday. Defenseman Cam Fowler had two goals in the win, his 1,000th NHL game. He has seven points (three goals, four assists) in nine games since being acquired in a trade with the Ducks on Dec. 14.

Nashville Predators at Vancouver Canucks (10 p.m. ET; SNE, SNO, SNP, FDSNSO)

The Canucks (18-11-8) will try to win consecutive games for the first time since Nov. 29 and Dec. 1, when they host the Predators (11-20-7) in the second game of a back-to-back; Vancouver won 4-3 in a shootout at the Seattle Kraken on Thursday. Nashville has been outscored 15-7 during a three-game losing streak. Forward Jonathan Marchessault has 14 points (nine goals, five assists) in his past 10 games for the Predators.

Tonight, the NHL is serving up a matchup between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Florida Panthers, and all eyes will be on Sidney Crosby as he seeks to resume his point chase for the Penguins.

After missing the past few games due to injury, Crosby is eager to get back on the ice and continue his impressive season. The veteran center has been a force to be reckoned with, tallying points at a blistering pace and solidifying his place as one of the league’s top players.

Facing off against the Panthers, Crosby will have his work cut out for him as he goes up against a strong Florida team that is also vying for a playoff spot. With both teams hungry for a win, tonight’s game promises to be a thrilling and intense battle.

Will Crosby be able to pick up where he left off and lead the Penguins to victory? Or will the Panthers prove to be too much for Pittsburgh to handle? Tune in tonight to find out as these two teams go head-to-head in what is sure to be a must-watch matchup.

  • Gauchos Resume Big West Action with Trip to Hawai’i

HONOLULU, Hawai’i – The UC Santa Barbara Men’s Basketball team (8-5, 0-2 Big West) resume Big West play Thursday, Jan. 2 as they travel to Hawai’i to take on the Rainbow Warriors in their lone game of the week.

    LAST TIME OUT

The Gauchos got back in the win column last Saturday with a 89-72 win over Westcliff. Four Gauchos scored in double figures with Deuce Turner leading all scorers with 21. Kenny Pohto posted 19 while Zion Sensley and Ariel Bland scored 13 and 10 respectively.

    SCOUTING THE RAINBOW WARRIORS

Hawai’i comes into the contest with an 8-4 overall record and 0-1 Big West record. Their lone Big West loss came at Long Beach State. The Rainbow Warriors most recently hosted the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic in which they went 2-1 with wins over Charlotte and Oakland and their loss coming against Nebraska.

UH is one of the best teams in the country at getting to the free throw line, shooting almost 22 shots from the charity stripe which ranks 82nd in all of NCAA. One matchup to watch will be the battle on the boards with both teams ranking inside the top 70 in Division I in rebound margin.

The Gauchos should be able to continue to knock down shots from behind the arc with Hawai’i allowing opponents to shoot over 35 percent from three point land. Hawai’i ranks in the bottom 60 of Division I in defending the perimeter. The Rainbow Warriors also do not force a lot of turnovers which will allow UC Santa Barbara to maintain more possessions.

    FOLLOW ALONG

UC Santa Barbara and Hawai’i will tip off at 9 p.m. Pacific Time on Thursday, Jan. 2. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with live stats available through ucsbgauchos.com/MBBLiveStats.

The Gauchos are gearing up to resume Big West action with a trip to the beautiful islands of Hawai’i. After a brief break, UCSB is ready to hit the court and continue their pursuit of a conference championship.

The team has been working hard in practice, fine-tuning their skills and game plan to take on tough opponents in the Big West. With a solid record so far this season, the Gauchos are determined to make a statement and come out on top in their upcoming matchups.

Facing off against Hawai’i will be no easy task, as the Rainbow Warriors are known for their strong defense and home court advantage. However, UCSB is ready to bring their A-game and showcase their talent on the court.

Fans can expect an exciting and competitive series as the Gauchos battle it out in Hawai’i. Stay tuned for updates and highlights as UCSB looks to make a splash in Big West play. Go Gauchos! #UCSB #BigWest #Hawai’iBound

  • Purdue Basketball Preview: Game 14 — @ Minnesota to resume Big Ten play

Purdue Basketball Preview: Game 14 — @ Minnesota to resume Big Ten play

MINNEAPOLIS — After an 8-3 non-conference season, 20th-ranked Purdue debuts in 2025 by resuming Big Ten play in Williams Arena, where Minnesota awaits.

DETAILS: Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025 | 8 p.m. ET | TV: FS1 (Cory Provus, Jordan Taylor) | Radio: Purdue Radio Network
    PURDUE (9-4, 1-1 B1G): ROSTER | SCHEDULE | STATS
    MINNESOTA (8-5, 0-2 B1G): ROSTER | SCHEDULE | STATS

    A FEW THINGS ABOUT PURDUE

    • After dropping games at top-15 Marquette and at Penn State in December conference play, the Boilermakers are looking for their first road win of the season.

    • After missing the Toledo game with a sprained foot, center Will Berg has returned to practice and is available, though his minutes were up and down prior to the injury anyway.

    • Purdue is one of 12 teams sitting at 1-1 after two Big Ten games.

    • Wing Myles Colvin has made just one of his past 14 three-point attempts, a slide Purdue would very much like for him to break out of as Big Ten play returns.

    • Purdue’s won six of its past seven meetings with Minnesota with one-sided wins in each of its past two trips to the Barn.

    • Defensive rebounding hasn’t been a strength for Purdue, as opponents are retrieving 32 percent of their misses.

    • Coming off a career-high 34 points vs. Toledo, Braden Smith needs just three more to hit the thousand-point mark for his career.

    ABOUT THIS GAME

    • Minnesota had some momentum last season, then fell victim to the portal and NIL worlds, as Texas A&M grabbed big man Pharrell Payne and Texas Tech took guard Elijah Hawkins. Further, star freshman Cam Christie turned pro earlier than anyone could have expected. The key departures set the Gophers’ rebuild under Ben Johnson back considerably.

    • Minnesota did hang on to well-traveled veteran Dawson Garcia, one of the top players in the Big Ten. The 23-year-old 4/5 man, formerly of Marquette and North Carolina, is averaging 19.1 points and 7.4 rebounds and has had big games against Purdue before, leveraging his ability to shoot three, score inside and drive from the high post against bigger defenders. Garcia scored 24 against Purdue in Mackey Arena, as the Gophers really pushed the second-ranked Boilermakers on their home floor.

    • Senior guard Mike Mitchell averages 13.3 points and shoots 49 percent from three on robust volume.

    • In December, Minnesota fell 90-72 to Michigan State at home and 82-67 at Indiana, making it one of three teams to open Big Ten play 0-2. Wisconsin and Washington are the other two.

    • Minnesota is a bad shooting team, at just 30.5 percent from three-point range and an atrocious 64.9 percent at the foul line.

The oddity there is that the Gophers’ top two scorers are excellent foul shooters and good three-point shooters. It’s everyone else that’s the problem. Its two highest-volume three-point shooters are shooting 21.5 and 22.2 percent, respectively. Same at the foul line, where Minnesota has two its highest-volume players shooting 44 percent and 35 percent.

    • On average, Minnesota gets outrebounded and hasn’t shown much bite on the offensive glass, where Purdue is sometimes vulnerable.

    THREE KEYS FOR PURDUE

STOP THE DRIBBLE DAWSON GARCIA TURNOVERS
The New Year affords Purdue a chance to show improvement in this pivotal area. It has to do a better job on the ball. He’s going to score. Purdue has to make things difficult on him and not let him live at the foul line. This is how Purdue gets beat, but really it’s only been a problem against certain types of teams. Nevertheless, Minnesota is not great offensively; Purdue doesn’t need to offer assistance.

Our feeling here is that Purdue’s fine, despite taking some losses to this point. But now’s the time for the Boilermakers to prove it. It’s hard times at Minnesota again and here’s guessing this won’t be too daunting an environment.

Purdue Basketball Preview: Game 14 — @ Minnesota to resume Big Ten play

As the Purdue Boilermakers gear up to resume Big Ten play, they will face off against the Minnesota Golden Gophers in what promises to be an intense matchup. Both teams are coming off strong performances in their non-conference games and will be looking to carry that momentum into conference play.

Purdue will be looking to rely on their strong defense and balanced scoring attack to secure a road victory against Minnesota. Players like Jaden Ivey and Trevion Williams will be crucial in leading the Boilermakers to victory, as they look to continue their climb up the Big Ten standings.

Minnesota, on the other hand, will be looking to defend their home court and secure a statement win against a tough Purdue team. Players like Marcus Carr and Liam Robbins will need to step up and deliver strong performances if the Golden Gophers hope to come out on top.

This game will be a crucial test for both teams as they look to establish themselves as contenders in the competitive Big Ten conference. Be sure to tune in to see which team comes out on top in this exciting matchup. Let’s go Boilermakers! #BoilerUp #BigTenBasketball

Are you struggling to find the right words for your resume? Look no further! As a top recruiting director, I have seen countless resumes and know exactly what employers are looking for. In this guide, I will show you how to say it on your resume to make a lasting impression and land your dream job.

    1. Tailor your resume to the job: One of the biggest mistakes job seekers make is using the same generic resume for every application. Instead, take the time to tailor your resume to the specific job you are applying for. Highlight the skills and experiences that are most relevant to the position.

    2. Use action verbs: To make your resume stand out, use strong action verbs to describe your accomplishments. Instead of saying “responsible for,” try using words like “managed,” “led,” or “achieved.” This will make your achievements sound more impressive and dynamic.

    3. Quantify your achievements: Employers love to see tangible results, so be sure to quantify your achievements whenever possible. Instead of saying you increased sales, say you increased sales by 20% in a year. This will show employers that you are a results-driven candidate.

    4. Be concise and specific: Keep your resume concise and to the point. Use specific examples to demonstrate your skills and experiences. Avoid using vague language and be as specific as possible to showcase your qualifications.

    5. Proofread, proofread, proofread: Finally, before sending out your resume, be sure to proofread it carefully. Typos and grammatical errors can make a bad impression on potential employers. Take the time to review your resume multiple times and consider asking a friend or mentor to review it as well.

By following these tips, you can create the perfect resume that will impress employers and help you land the job of your dreams. Good luck!
