Kenny Atkinson’s quote resurfaces in the wake of another LaMelo Ball injury
LaMelo Ball is once again dealing with an ankle injury, something that has been said of the Charlotte Hornets guard plenty of times since he was drafted. He stepped on Jarred Vanderbilt’s foot while backpedaling to get back on defense on Monday night and had to leave the contest immediately.
It reminded former NBA guard Jeff Teague of a conversation he had with Kenny Atkinson. The current Cleveland Cavaliers coach had accepted the Hornets job before backing out of it, sending the Hornets spiraling into a second Steve Clifford era. Atkinson is now the frontrunner for Coach of the Year with the NBA-leading Cleveland Cavaliers.
Jeff Teague recalls a conversation he had with Kenny Atkinson about LaMelo Ball before he was offered the job in Charlotte:
“He’s unbelievable, he’s so talented. I would love to work with him. I just don’t know how healthy he’s gonna be.” pic.twitter.com/uXBUH0ncQU

When he was linked to the Hornets, Teague said that Atkinson was highly complimentary of Ball. “He’s injury prone… he’s talented, he’s unbelievable, he’s so talented. I would love to work with him,” Atkinson said per Teague. “I just don’t know how healthy he’s going to be.”
Ball has crossed the 40-game threshold just once in his career. With a new ankle injury occurring, it’s not clear if he’ll cross it this season. The Hornets immediately ruled him out Monday evening and didn’t waste time listing him as questionable for tonight’s matchup with the Brooklyn Nets.

Mandatory Credit: Scott Kinser-Imagn Images / Scott Kinser-Imagn Images The silver lining is that it’s a different ankle than last year. He sprained his left ankle this time, but he had surgery on his right ankle last year. There’s some cautious optimism that the injury isn’t as bad as it could be, but it’s yet again an ankle injury that is going to cost Ball at least some playing time if not a lot.
There’s still no clear reason Atkinson decided to turn the Hornets down, but he did express some concern about Ball’s health even then. It’s an issue that has plagued the guard ever since, and it doesn’t look like there’s much relief on the horizon.

In the wake of another injury to LaMelo Ball, a quote from former Brooklyn Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson has resurfaced, shedding light on the importance of patience and development in young players.Atkinson, who coached Ball’s older brother Lonzo during his time with the Nets, once said, “It’s a process. The NBA is a tough league, and it takes time for young players to adjust and find their footing.”
This quote serves as a reminder that injuries are a part of the game and that young players like LaMelo Ball need time to grow and develop both physically and mentally. While injuries can be frustrating and setbacks, they are also opportunities for players to learn and come back stronger.
As LaMelo Ball continues his road to recovery, fans and analysts alike can reflect on Atkinson’s words and understand that patience and perseverance are key elements in a player’s journey to success in the NBA.

University of Illinois head football coach Bret Bielema took a shot at former University of Michigan and current Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh on social media Wednesday.
Replying to a video on X that featured Harbaugh saying, “If you cheat to win, then you’ve already lost,” during his time as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, Bielema threw some shade at Harbaugh regarding how his tenure at Michigan ended:
Bret Bielema @BretBielema
Really…. Why did you leave? <br><br>Was looking forward to playing but understand why you ran to the <a href=”https://twitter.com/hashtag/NFL?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>#NFL</a><br><br>See you in the future and can’t wait <a href=”https://twitter.com/hashtag/famILLy?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>#famILLy</a> <a href=”https://twitter.com/hashtag/ILL?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>#ILL</a> <a href=”https://t.co/4y7C5ecvUA”>https://t.co/4y7C5ecvUA</a>
During Harbaugh’s final season at Michigan in 2023, analyst Connor Stalions resigned from his role with the team amid an NCAA investigation into allegations that he was the leader of an illegal sign-stealing operation.
The Wolverines went a perfect 15-0 and won the national championship in 2023, but Harbaugh left his alma mater at the end of the season to take the Chargers’ head coaching job.
During the 2023 campaign, Harbaugh had to serve a pair of suspensions due to NCAA violations.
The first suspension was a self-imposed, three-game ban as a result of recruiting violations, and then he served another three-game suspension later in the season as punishment for the sign-stealing scandal.
Sherrone Moore, who is now the head coach at Michigan, won all six games as the interim head coach while Harbaugh was out, and Harbaugh was allowed to return for the Big Ten Championship Game and the College Football Playoff.
Back in August, after Harbaugh had already left for the NFL, the NCAA provided Michigan with a formal Notice of Allegations related to the sign-stealing investigation.
Several current and former members of the Michigan football program, including Harbaugh, were accused of committing Level I violations.
On Tuesday, Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports reported that Michigan intends to fight the NCAA on the allegations, with the university stating that the NCAA is “grossly overreaching” and “wildly overcharging” the program.
In his first season back in the NFL, Harbaugh led the Chargers to an 11-6 record and a playoff berth, marking the fourth time in his five seasons as an NFL head coach that he secured a playoff berth.
As for Michigan, the Wolverines took a big step back from 2023 to 2024, finishing 8-5. However, Michigan did beat rival and eventual national championship-winning Ohio State for a fourth consecutive year.
Bielema, who coached Wisconsin in the Big Ten from 2006 to 2012, returned to the conference with Illinois in 2021 after a five-year run at Arkansas.
He led the Fighting Illini to a 10-3 mark in 2024, which was their best record since 2001 when they went 10-2.
Included in those 10 wins was a 21-7 home triumph over a Michigan team that was the No. 24-ranked squad in the nation at the time of the game.
Illinois HC Bret Bielema Throws Shade at Jim Harbaugh After Old Video on Cheating ResurfacesIllinois head coach Bret Bielema is not holding back when it comes to calling out Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh. A recently resurfaced video from years ago shows Harbaugh discussing ways to bend the rules in recruiting, and Bielema wasted no time in taking a jab at his rival.
In the video, Harbaugh can be heard joking about finding loopholes in the NCAA rules to gain an advantage in recruiting. Bielema, who has a history of clashing with Harbaugh on and off the field, didn’t hesitate to call out the hypocrisy.
“It’s always interesting to see someone who claims to be a paragon of virtue and integrity get caught with their hand in the cookie jar,” Bielema said in a recent press conference. “I guess the old saying holds true, cheaters never prosper.”
The comments from Bielema have sparked a heated debate among fans and analysts, with many wondering if there will be any repercussions for Harbaugh and the Michigan program. As the college football world waits to see how this drama unfolds, one thing is for sure: the rivalry between Illinois and Michigan just got a whole lot more intense. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

JD Vance defends billionaire Marc Andreessen after alleged remark about small-town America resurfaces
As Republicans try to keep up their populist ruse, big money elites in the party — and their big mouths — are making the herculean task of making Republicans look like authentic defenders of everyday Americans increasingly difficult.
Vivek Ramaswamy and Elon Musk were a prime example of that last week when they faced backlash for appearing to suggest American-born workers are inferior to immigrant workers who come to the United States on H–1B visas. And MAGA-aligned tech billionaire Marc Andreessen faced backlash after a cruel remark he allegedly made about small-town America in 2017 resurfaced on social media this week.
The quote comes from an American Prospect article published in April and authored by journalist Rick Perlstein, who recounted a dinner he had with Andreessen in 2017. In the article, Perlstein recollected an alleged discussion with Andreessen about the plight of small-town Americans. He quotes Andreessen as having said something to the effect of: “I’m glad there’s OxyContin and video games to keep those people quiet.”
Perlstein went on to note that he may have misremembered whether Andreessen used the word “quiet” or another word to indicate small-town America’s futility:
I’m taking the liberty of putting it in quotation marks, though I can’t be sure those were his exact words. Marc, if you’re reading, feel free to get in touch and refresh my memory. Maybe he said “quiescent,” or “docile,” or maybe “powerless.” Something, certainly, along those lines.
The alleged remark suggests Andreessen carried disdain for people who make up much of the MAGA base. On Monday, Andreessen confirmed Perlstein attended dinner at his house in 2017 but appeared to deny having made the degrading comment about small-town Americans. “True to form, he is now slandering me with fake quotes,” Andreessen alleged, referring to Perlstein.
Perlstein isn’t backing down from his reporting. On Tuesday, he encouraged readers to “decide for yourself” and suggested reporters “ask Andreessen to confirm or deny whether he holds the people he grew up with in contempt.”
With regard to contempt, Andreessen’s alleged remark feels similar to Trump‘s reported rhetoric. It’s also reminiscent of the classist depiction of rural America in Vice President-elect JD Vance’s 2016 memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy.”
Vance — whose venture capital firm was reportedly funded in part by Andreessen — leaped to the billionaire investor’s defense on Tuesday.
“I am admittedly biased, but I’m biased because Marc is a good dude,” Vance posted to X. “I don’t believe Pearlstein’s slander for a second.”
The angry quote tweets and replies responding to Vance show he was unsuccessful in totally silencing the backlash, much of which appeared to come from Trump-supporting accounts (including that of conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer).
It looks like some members of the MAGA world are beginning to realize their movement exists to serve wealthy elites at everyone else’s expense. I don’t expect this realization to change their voting behavior writ large. The backlash feels like an isolated moment of resistance rather than a true uprising.
JD Vance, the author of “Hillbilly Elegy” and Republican Senate candidate, has come to the defense of billionaire Marc Andreessen after an alleged remark about small-town America resurfaced. In a recent interview, Vance stated that he believes Andreessen’s comments were taken out of context and that the tech entrepreneur has a genuine interest in helping rural communities thrive.
The alleged remark in question comes from a leaked email where Andreessen reportedly referred to small-town America as “inbred, backward, and racist.” However, Vance argues that Andreessen’s overall track record shows a commitment to investing in and supporting underserved communities.
Vance’s defense of Andreessen has sparked debate among critics who believe that the tech billionaire’s comments were derogatory and dismissive of the challenges facing small-town America. Nevertheless, Vance stands by his support for Andreessen and emphasizes the importance of looking at the bigger picture when evaluating someone’s intentions and actions.
As the controversy continues to unfold, it raises important questions about the dynamics between Silicon Valley elites and rural America, and the role that individuals like Vance and Andreessen play in bridging that divide.
