NFL emails reveal extent of Saints’ damage control for clergy sex abuse crisis
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — As New Orleans church leaders braced for the fallout from publishing a list of predatory Catholic priests, they turned to an unlikely ally: the front office of the city’s NFL franchise.
What followed was a months-long, crisis-communications blitz orchestrated by the New Orleans Saints’ president and other top team officials, according to hundreds of internal emails obtained by The Associated Press.
The records, which the Saints and church had long sought to keep out of public view, reveal team executives played a more extensive role than previously known in a public relations campaign to mitigate fallout from the clergy sexual abuse crisis. The emails shed new light on the Saints’ foray into a fraught topic far from the gridiron, a behind-the-scenes effort driven by the team’s devoutly Catholic owner who has long enjoyed a close relationship with the city’s embattled archbishop.
They also showed how various New Orleans institutions — from a sitting federal judge to the local media — rallied around church leaders at a critical moment.
Among the key moments, as revealed in the Saints’ own emails:
— Saints executives were so involved in the church’s damage control that a team spokesman briefed his boss on a 2018 call with the city’s top prosecutor hours before the church released a list of clergymen accused of abuse. The call, the spokesman said, “allowed us to take certain people off” the list.
— Team officials were among the first people outside the church to view that list, a carefully curated, yet undercounted roster of suspected pedophiles. The disclosure of those names invited civil claims against the church and drew attention from federal and state law enforcement.
— The team’s president, Dennis Lauscha, drafted more than a dozen questions that Archbishop Gregory Aymond should be prepared to answer as he faced reporters.
— The Saints’ senior vice president of communications, Greg Bensel, provided fly-on-the-wall updates to Lauscha about local media interviews, suggesting church and team leaders were all on the same team. “He is doing well,” Bensel wrote as the archbishop told reporters the church was committed to addressing the crisis. “That is our message,” Bensel added, “that we will not stop here today.”
The emails obtained by AP sharply undercut assurances the Saints gave fans about the public relations guidance five years ago when they asserted they had provided only “minimal” assistance to the church. The team went to court to keep its internal emails secret.
“This is disgusting,” said state Rep. Mandie Landry, D-New Orleans. “As a New Orleans resident, taxpayer and Catholic, it doesn’t make any sense to me why the Saints would go to these lengths to protect grown men who raped children. All of them should have been just as horrified at the allegations.”
The Saints told AP last week that the partnership is a thing of the past. The emails cover a yearlong period ending in July 2019, when they were subpoenaed by attorneys for victims of a priest later charged with raping an 8-year-old boy.
In a lengthy statement, the team criticized the media for using “leaked emails for the purpose of misconstruing a well-intended effort.”
“No member of the Saints organization condones or wants to cover up the abuse that occurred in the Archdiocese of New Orleans,” the team said. “That abuse occurred is a terrible fact.”
The team’s response did little to quell the anger of survivors of clergy sexual abuse. “We felt betrayed by the organization,” said Kevin Bourgeois, a former Saints season ticket holder who was abused by a priest in the 1980s. “It forces me to question what other secrets are being withheld. I’m angry, hurt and re-traumatized again.”
Emails reveal extent of help
After the AP first reported on the alliance in early 2020, Saints owner Gayle Benson denied that anyone “associated with our organizations made recommendations or had input” on the list of pedophile priests.
The Saints reiterated that denial in its statement Saturday, saying no Saints employees “had any responsibility for adding or removing any names from that list.” The team said that no employees offered “any input, suggestions or opinions as to who should be included or omitted from” the list.
Leon Cannizzaro, the district attorney at the time, last week denied any role in shaping the credibly accused clergy list, echoing statements he made in 2020. He told AP he “absolutely had no involvement in removing any names from any list.” Cannizzaro said he did not know why the Saints’ spokesman would have reported he had been on a call related to the list.
The emails, sent from Saints accounts, don’t specify which clergymen were removed from the list or why. They raise fresh questions, however, about the Saints’ role in a scandal that has taken on much larger legal and financial stakes since the team waded into it, potentially in violation of the NFL’s policy against conduct “detrimental to the league.”
A coalescing of New Orleans institutions
The outsized role of Saints executives could draw new attention from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who is scheduled to address reporters Monday as New Orleans prepares to host its 11th Super Bowl. Messages requesting comment were sent to the NFL.
Taken together, the emails portray a coalescing of several New Orleans institutions. U.S. District Court Judge Jay Zainey, who was copied by the Saints on the public relations efforts, cheered Bensel on from his personal email account, thanking the team’s spokesman “for the wonderful advice.” A newspaper editor similarly thanked Bensel for getting involved.
“You have hit all the points,” Zainey, a fellow Catholic, wrote in another email to Bensel, praising a lengthy note the Saints spokesman sent to local newspaper editors. “By his example and leadership, Archbishop Aymond, our shepherd, will continue to lead our Church in the right direction — helping us to learn and to rebuild from the mistakes of the past.”
Zainey later struck down a Louisiana law, vigorously opposed by the church, that would have allowed victims to bring civil claims irrespective of how long ago the alleged sex abuse took place. He declined to comment.
A watershed moment for the Catholic Church
The list marked a watershed in heavily Catholic New Orleans — a long-awaited mea culpa to parishioners intended to usher in healing and local accountability. It came at a time when church leaders were seeking to retain public trust — and financial support — as they reckoned with generations of abuse and mounting litigation that eventually drove the Archdiocese of New Orleans into bankruptcy.
That litigation, filed in 2020, involves more than 600 people who say they were abused by clergy. The case has produced a trove of still-secret church records said to document years of abuse claims and a pattern of church leaders transferring clergy without reporting their crimes to law enforcement.
While it has since expanded, the list of accused priests was missing a number of clergy when it was originally released, an earlier AP investigation found.
The AP identified 20 clergymen who had been accused in lawsuits or charged by law enforcement with child sexual abuse who were inexplicably omitted from the New Orleans list — including two who were charged and convicted of crimes.
Still, the list has served as a roadmap for both the FBI and Louisiana State Police, which launched sweeping investigations into New Orleans church leaders’ shielding of predatory priests.
Last spring, state police carried out a wide-ranging search warrant at the Archdiocese of New Orleans, seizing records that include communications with the Vatican.
Since the Saints began assisting the archdiocese, at least seven current and former members of the local clergy have been charged with crimes ranging from rape to possession of child pornography.
Public relations campaign
The extent of the abuse remained largely unknown in 2018, a year the Saints won nine consecutive games on the way to an NFC Championship appearance. As the church prepped for a media onslaught, Bensel carried out an aggressive public relations campaign in which he called in favors, prepared talking points and leaned on long-time media contacts to support the church through a “soon-to-be-messy” time.
Far from freelancing, Bensel had the Saints’ backing and blessing through what he called a “Galileo moment,” suggesting Aymond would be a trailblazer in releasing a credibly accused clergy list at a critical time for the church. In emails to editorial boards, he warned against “casting a critical eye” on the archbishop “is neither beneficial nor right.”
He urged the city’s newspapers to “work with” the church, reminding them the Saints and New Orleans Pelicans — the city’s NBA team, also owned by Benson — had been successful thanks, in part, to their support.
“We did this because we had buy-in from YOU,” Bensel wrote to the editors of The Times-Picayune and New Orleans Advocate, “supporting our mission to be the best, to make New Orleans and everything within her bounds the best.”
“We are sitting on that opportunity now with the Archdiocese of New Orleans,” he added. “We need to tell the story of how this Archbishop is leading us out of this mess.”
Close relationship between Saints and the Catholic Church
Benson and Aymond, the archbishop, have been confidants for years. It was the archbishop who introduced Benson to her late husband, Tom Benson, who died in 2018, leaving his widow in control of New Orleans’ NFL and NBA franchises.
The Bensons’ foundation has given tens of millions of dollars to the archdiocese and other Catholic causes. Along the way, Aymond has flown on the owner’s private jet and become almost a part of the team, frequently celebrating pregame Masses.
When the clergy abuse allegations came to a head, Bensel, the Saints’ spokesman, worked his contacts in the local media to help shape the story. He had friendly email exchanges with a Times-Picayune columnist who praised the archbishop for releasing the clergy list. He also asked the newspaper’s leadership to keep their communications “confidential, not for publication nor to share with others.”
His emails revealed that The Advocate – after Aymond privately complained to the publisher — removed a notice from one online article that had called for clergy abuse victims to reach out.
Kevin Hall, president and publisher of Georges Media, which owns the newspaper, said the publication welcomes engagement from community leaders but that outreach “does not dilute our journalistic standards or keep us from pursuing the truth.”
“No one gets preferential treatment in our coverage of the news,” he said in a statement. “Over the past six years, we have consistently published in-depth stories highlighting the ongoing serious issues surrounding the archdiocese sex abuse crisis, as well as investigative reports on this matter by WWL-TV and by The Associated Press.”
It was The Advocate’s reporting that prompted Bensel to help the church, the emails show. He first offered to “chat crisis communications” with church leaders after the newspaper exposed a scandal involving a disgraced deacon, George Brignac, who remained a lay minister even after the archdiocese settled claims he raped an 8-year-old altar boy.
“We have been through enough at Saints to be a help or sounding board,” Bensel wrote, “but I don’t want to overstep!”
In a bombshell revelation, leaked NFL emails have exposed the extensive measures taken by the New Orleans Saints to manage the fallout from the clergy sex abuse crisis that rocked the Catholic Church. The emails, obtained by investigative journalists, detail the team’s efforts to downplay the scandal and protect its image in the wake of the shocking allegations against former Saints chaplain Father Michael O’Connor. The emails reveal that team executives were in constant communication with PR consultants and legal advisors, strategizing on how to navigate the crisis and minimize the damage to the team’s reputation.
The extent of the Saints’ damage control efforts is staggering, with team officials reportedly going as far as to draft statements for players and coaches to use in response to media inquiries, and even considering hiring a crisis management firm to handle the fallout.
The revelations have sparked outrage among fans and commentators, who are questioning the team’s priorities and ethics in the face of such serious allegations. Many are calling for accountability and transparency from the Saints organization, as well as the NFL, in light of these damning emails.
As the scandal continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the Saints’ reputation has been tarnished, and it remains to be seen how they will recover from this damaging revelation.

The video was filmed two weeks before she shared the news of her pregnancy with the public.
Alaina confirmed the news of her pregnancy in an interview with People after hinting about it in her newest music video, Those Kind of Women.

“It’s been very stressful hiding it,” Alaina said of being five months pregnant at the time. “But it’s been so fun because it’s like our own little family secret. I live a life where everything’s in the public eye, but this little baby’s my best kept secret to date.”
Alaina then opened up about how hard of a year 2024 was for her and her family after “losing my dad in July.”
She continued, “We weren’t even trying to get pregnant. I truly believe my dad got up there in heaven and said, ‘Somehow we got to get a baby involved.’”
“My baby is still such a light in my life, a light in the midst of sadness and what felt like a lot of darkness,” Alaina explained. “So very much looking forward to Baby Arnold getting here.”
In a separate video, Alaina also revealed the sex of her unborn baby.
Enlisting the help of their fur babies, Alaina and Arnold revealed they are expecting a baby girl.

Tony Finau and wife welcome their 6th child with a twist on the gender reveal
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Tony Finau put a twist on the popular gender reveal: He waited until after the baby was born to let his other children guess.
Finau revealed on Instagram that his wife, Alayna, gave birth to their sixth child last Saturday. His other five children apparently didn’t know the gender.
In the video, Finau brings them into the hospital room where his wife has the newborn wrapped in a blanket with only the face showing. Finau asked each of their children, one at a time, if they thought they had a little brother or a little sister.
“What are the guesses?” Finau asks.
Jraice, the oldest, said it was a boy. The next four — Tony, Neenee, Sage and Sienna-Vee — all said the same. Finau said the color of the newborn’s clothing would give the answer.
His wife unwrapped the blanket to reveal a pink onesie.
The 35-year-old Finau, a two-time Ryder Cup player with six career victories on the PGA Tour, is playing this week in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

The Flip Off crew revealed that they have a group chat!
During an Instagram Live on Wednesday, Jan. 29, Christina Haack sat down with her ex-husband, Tarek El Moussa, and his wife, Heather Rae El Moussa, to answer fan questions about their new HGTV competition series. And while the trio confirmed that they are, in fact, on a private text chain together, the reality stars remained coy about the name.
“Oh, we have a group chat,” Christina, 41, said in response to a viewer question.
“We don’t have a name,” Heather, 37, chimed in before saying, “Oh! I know what it would be.”
Heather then proceeded to whisper the potential name to Christina, who emphatically agreed. “Yes!” she responded.
However, the ladies declined to share the potential group chat name with fans.
Later in the conversation, another person asked if fans can expect a Heather and Christina spin-off show at some point in the future.
“No,” Tarek, 43, quickly said in a jokingly firm voice.
Heather and Christina, however, seemed intrigued by the idea, with Heather saying, “Flip Off! Girls Edition!” with a laugh.

The Flip Off was initially announced in May 2024 and was originally set to follow Tarek and Heather as they competed in a house flipping competition against Christina and her then-partner, Josh Hall. However, the show’s premise became less clear after Josh, 44, officially filed for divorce from Christina on July 15, 2024 after nearly three years of marriage.
Promotions for the show have since only featured Christina, Tarek and Heather, and a December 2024 press release from HGTV confirmed that Christina would be working with her “trusted team” as opposed to her ex this season.
Further details about the situation between Christina and Josh emerged during the show’s premiere on Jan. 29.
In an on-camera sit down between Christina and Tarek — who co-parent kids Taylor, 14, and Brayden, 9 — Christina revealed that Josh would give her the silent treatment whenever she spoke to Tarek.
“You make him very insecure,” she tearfully told Tarek during the conversation. “Every time we’d barely joke at [the kids’] soccer [games], or if I laughed at you, he like would not speak to me for two to three days.”
Christina and Tarek separated in 2016 after seven years of marriage and officially divorced the following year, though they continued to host their HGTV show Flip or Flop for several seasons after their split.
In a Jan. 29th appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Christina shared that she thinks competing on the upcoming season without a partner actually puts her at an advantage.
“It’s so much easier without somebody else bothering me,” she said on the talk show. “I mean, I don’t have to ask approval from anyone. No one’s, like, weighing me down.”

The Flip Off airs on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on HGTV.

They shared that they have a group chat where they can communicate and share updates about their families and projects.
Haack and El Moussa both expressed gratitude for the ability to co-parent their children and work together professionally, despite their divorce. They emphasized the importance of communication and respect in their relationship with Tarek.

The power cutoff was a visible sign all is not well with the mall’s finances. Cobb County records show the mall’s owner is also behind on its property taxes, and other malls the Kohan Retail Investment Group owns have reportedly encountered financial issues.
ExploreKennesaw’s Town Center mall to reopen after delinquent power bills force closure Kohan Retail, a New York firm that owns Town Center but not the big box stores such as Macy’s, currently owes more than $1 million in property taxes that were due Oct. 15 and now include late fees and interest, according to Cobb court records. The amount could grow if the taxes and penalties remain unpaid and the county moves to sell the tax lien at a sale scheduled in May.
Mike Kohan, the founder of Kohan Retail, said in a brief call with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the company’s malls are “doing fine all across the country.” Georgia Power turned back on the mall’s lights after Kohan Retail “met the necessary requirements” following several months of delinquent power bills.
Kohan said refinancing the mall’s loan last year means there “was not enough cash to pay the taxes.” He said the back taxes will be paid soon.
Kohan did not respond to multiple follow-up calls seeking additional comment on the mall’s unpaid property taxes and troubles the company has encountered elsewhere.
Greg Null, an Atlanta attorney with Carlton Fields who specializes in commercial real estate debt, said unpaid property taxes — also called a local tax lien — is a sign the mall’s distress likely runs deeper than some unlit light bulbs.
“It’s a bellwether for the health of the property,” he said. “If there’s a tax lien, there’s a problem.”
ExploreFrom 2021: Town Center went into foreclosure but the Cobb County mall remains open Hard ‘to feel stable’
A Texas mall owned by Kohan Retail had its water shut off eight times in 2024 because the bill had not been paid, ABC affiliate television station KXXV reported. Another Kohan Retail mall in Kansas had its power turned off five times in seven months, ABC affiliate KAKE reported. An Iowa mall owned by Kohan Retail was closed for over nine months after its power was shut off, KCRG in Cedar Rapids reported.
Several malls owned by the group have shut down, according to news reports. Others have faced auction due to unpaid taxes, which could also be in Town Center mall’s future.
For the employees who work at Town Center, Tuesday’s sudden closure and the lack of communication have them concerned about its future — especially after examining Kohan Retail’s track record with other malls it owns across the U.S.
“I don’t want it to happen again,” Reed said. “It’s hard for us to feel stable within our jobs here because the company is not stable already.”
Cobb County Tax Commissioner Carla Jackson filed a lien on the property in January after Town Center racked up $998,260 in unpaid taxes, which now surpass $1 million with penalties and interest. Jackson said Kohan Retail was also 10 months late paying its taxes in 2023, the same year the firm acquired the mall for $71 million.
Jackson said her staff has been trying unsuccessfully to reach the company for months.
“We would prefer for people to talk to us if they’re struggling — set up a payment arrangement or something,” she said. “But when we hear crickets, and it’s a big commercial property, I mean, we’re gonna move on it.”
ExploreFrom 2023: Distressed mall investor pays $71M for floundering Town Center at Cobb Snowballing debt
If the bill remains unpaid, the tax lien will be sold at auction May 6.
Investors bid to purchase the value of the lien, which the property owner will still have to pay back. The investor can charge 20% in interest during the lien’s first year and 10% in subsequent years, which Null said can lead to hefty profits.
“These sell like hotcakes,” he said. “They snap them right up.”
In addition, outstanding liens can affect other loans and mortgages. After staving off foreclosure last summer by narrowly paying off the loan it used to acquire the mall, Kohan Realty used Town Center as collateral to take out $49.2 million in new debt last year. Spread across two loans, the debt matures in early 2026.
Several regional malls nationwide have shuttered amid the rise of online shopping and since the COVID-19 pandemic. Some Atlanta-area malls have been reimagined or redesigned into mixed-use developments, often with apartments, office space, entertainment attractions and other uses.
Town Center suffered another hit with its Belk store expected to close next month, according to Channel 2 Action News.
Jim Bieri, a national retail expert based with Stokas Bieri Real Estate in Detroit, said there’s a clear divide between malls that are receiving investment and refreshes from ownership and those that are merely investment tools.
“They tend not to invest in the mall, and they squeeze cash flow everywhere they can,” Bieri said of some owners.
Kohan said the company values its tenants and will work to accommodate the tenants impacted by the closure.
“We appreciate the tenants,” Kohan said. “We’re going to consider them as partners and move forward, and 2025 is going to be a great year for us in terms of acquisitions of new malls and also upkeeping the malls that we already own.”
But employees like Reed, who depend on the mall for their livelihood, fear the lights may not stay on.
“There’s so many questions that are unanswered,” she said. “Where is the money going to the point where you can’t pay the bill?”
The recent power problems at Town Center mall have shed light on other underlying financial issues that the shopping center is facing. While the mall has attributed the outages to maintenance issues and aging infrastructure, many are speculating that there may be deeper financial problems at play.Reports have surfaced that the mall has been struggling to keep up with rising operating costs and declining foot traffic. With the rise of online shopping and changing consumer preferences, many malls across the country have been facing similar challenges. However, Town Center mall seems to be particularly vulnerable due to its lack of modernization and investment in amenities that would attract shoppers.
Some tenants at the mall have expressed concerns about the management’s ability to address these issues and maintain the viability of the shopping center. With the power problems serving as a wake-up call, it is clear that action needs to be taken to ensure the long-term success of Town Center mall.
As the situation unfolds, it will be interesting to see how the mall’s management responds and whether they are able to implement changes that will address the financial issues plaguing the shopping center. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

RFK Jr.’s financial disclosures reveal millions in both debt and income as he awaits HHS confirmation
As Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President Trump’s Health and Human Services Secretary nominee, awaits his confirmation hearing, financial disclosures released Wednesday show that he is saddled with millions in debt, but is positioned to earn millions from book deals.
In financial disclosure forms filed with the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, Kennedy reported debts of $610,000 to $1.2 million on his American Express card, up to three mortgages totaling somewhere from $2.25 million to $10.5 million, along with other loans, one of which was as much as $500,000.
Even so, he reported netting more than $11 million over the past two years, and is expected to take in $2 million to $4 million more in book advances for two books with Skyhorse Publishing in New York: “Unsettled Science” and “A Defense for Israel.”
Nearly $9 million of Kennedy’s recent income came from his law firm, Kennedy and Madonna, LLP, now called Madonna and Madonna, LLP. In a letter dated Jan. 21, Kennedy wrote to the U.S. Office of Government Ethics that, if confirmed as HHS Secretary, he would sever ties with the firm and some other income sources to avoid conflicts of interest. His final payment from the firm was in May 2024, he said.
The disclosures also make clear Kennedy still intends to receive legal fees from Wisner Baum, a firm suing the maker of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine Gardasil over its alleged failure to warn consumers about its risks.
“Upon confirmation, I will retain an interest in contingency fee cases that do not involve claims against the United States and in which the United States is not a party and does not have a direct and substantial interest,” Kennedy wrote in his disclosure.
His financial disclosure shows he earned $856,559 in referral fees from Wisner.
Kennedy also drew $326,056 in salary and benefits from Children’s Health Defense, a nonprofit that has filed lawsuits against federal agencies — including some he would oversee as secretary — over vaccine approvals such as COVID-19 shots for children.
In December, Kennedy said he resigned as chairman and chief legal counsel for CHD after being nominated to head HHS.
“We are grateful for Bobby’s past contributions and commitment to Children’s Health Defense and to the millions of children harmed by toxic exposures,” said Mary Holland, CEO of CHD, at the time.
“Bobby provided the impetus behind so many of CHD’s big accomplishments. While we will miss his leadership, we are proud that he has been nominated to lead HHS. We look forward to all that we know he will work to accomplish as he moves into this powerful government position.”
Kennedy also listed income from a mix of stocks, endorsements, speaking fees and residuals connected to his wife, Cheryl Hines, best known for her work on HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
Hines also receives residuals from shows and movies “Friends,” “Herbie,” “Waitress,” “The Conners,” “The Flight Attendant” and “A Bad Moms Christmas.” She received a $600,000 advance to pen her memoir, “My Shade of Crazy.”
Kennedy’s Senate confirmation hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 29.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the nominee for Assistant Secretary for Health and Human Services, has made public his financial disclosures, revealing millions in both debt and income as he awaits confirmation from the Senate.According to the documents, RFK Jr. reported debts ranging from $15 million to $55 million, including mortgages on multiple properties, credit card debt, and loans. However, he also reported income of between $5 million and $25 million, largely stemming from his work as a lawyer and environmental activist.
Despite his substantial debts, RFK Jr. has assured the Senate that he is able to manage his financial obligations and that they will not influence his decision-making in his role at HHS. Critics, however, have raised concerns about the potential conflicts of interest that could arise from his financial situation.
As RFK Jr. navigates the confirmation process, his financial disclosures are sure to be a topic of scrutiny. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal reveal why they finally revisited ‘When Harry Met Sally’ after 35 years
CNN
—
It’s a reunion 35 years in the making, thanks to mayonnaise.
More than three decades after the romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally” first hit theaters, Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are finally back together.
Coinciding with the 35th anniversary of their beloved movie, Crystal and Ryan returned to the famed Katz’s Deli in New York City to recreate one of the film’s most famous scenes, where the floors were still greasy, the commotion was still loud, and, well, the orgasms were still very fake.
Seated together at the exact same table where they originally filmed that infamous 1989 meal, Crystal and Ryan have recreated the iconic moment from rom-com cinema for a Hellmann’s mayonnaise commercial that will air during next month’s Super Bowl.
Speaking to CNN, the duo revealed that they never thought they’d have a “When Harry Met Sally” reunion. But then the perfect project came along.
In the commercial, titled “When Sally Met Hellmann’s,” Ryan, in character as Sally, is overcome with excitement, to say the least, when she takes a bite of her turkey sandwich with Hellmann’s mayonnaise.
Ryan said she is excited for fans to learn that Harry and Sally are still together all these years later.
“I don’t know that they intended it, but what we like about it is that you’re inside a little bit of their happily after ever,” Ryan told CNN. “Thirty-five years later, you get the idea that they’re still going here, they’re together, they’re still talking the way they talk to each other. It’s like a little wink at the movie.”
Crystal said that it felt like no time had passed at all.
“Is the right word comfortable? I don’t know, it just makes sense! That’s always been something, is that you can’t really define it,” Crystal said. “I knew it the first time that we met when Meg came in. I was already cast in the movie and when Meg came in to talk and then to read, we just said, ‘Let’s start shooting.’ It just felt right and great right away. And it did on this day, too.”
Crystal continued, “When we walked onto the set together, it was just like, ‘Here we are.’ Same table, same pastrami sandwich, same indigestion. And you know, it felt kind of great.”
The duo still marvel at the enduring love for “When Harry Met Sally.”
“I think about the legacy of that scene or that movie,” Ryan said. “Talking about it today, I’m so grateful that I was around all of these really kind and very high-level comedic minds,” she said, reminiscing on working on the film with Crystal and castmates Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby, as well as director Rob Reiner, writer Nora Ephron and cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld.
“Understanding men and women, the basic principle was, ‘Can they be friends?’ You know, that’s delicate stuff – this was in the late ’80s. It was really high wire,” Crystal said. “You have no idea what’s going to happen with any project. We left with a great experience. We still have that in our hearts, and we’ll always have that. And the fact that this movie has endured and is so respected and revered and studied, that is incredibly moving and satisfying.”
Recalling the original deli scene, Crystal said that Ephron came up with the initial idea to discuss a woman faking an orgasm on-screen. But the two stars had creative input. Ryan told CNN that she is the one who voiced, ‘I should do it,’ and then Crystal took it up a notch, offering the idea to film the scene in a public setting, like a restaurant.
In the Super Bowl ad, the punchline – “I’ll have what she’s having” – is recreated by a modern-day rom-com star: actress Sydney Sweeney.
Ryan praised Sweeney as “ballsy, funny, game, silly and smart,” and said that she came to set with social media ideas to support the project.
“That’s maybe an intimidating environment to walk into,” Ryan added. “But she was just fantastic.”
Crystal, who praised Sweeney’s “extraordinary work” in HBO’s “Euphoria,” said that “bearing the burden of having to deliver that line” comes with pressure, but Sweeney “delivered it and she was really good.”
“She was just great,” Crystal said. “I think it will be a delicious little surprise at the end.”
Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal recently sat down for an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly to discuss their decision to revisit the iconic romantic comedy film, ‘When Harry Met Sally,’ after 35 years.During the interview, Ryan and Crystal shared that they had been approached numerous times over the years about the possibility of a sequel or a remake of the beloved film. However, both actors were hesitant to revisit the story that had become so beloved and iconic in the hearts of fans.
Ryan explained, “We always felt like ‘When Harry Met Sally’ was a perfect standalone film. It captured a moment in time and a specific type of relationship that felt complete in its own right. We didn’t want to tarnish that by trying to recreate the magic.”
Crystal added, “But as time went on, we started to realize that there was still more to explore with these characters. We wanted to show where Harry and Sally are now, 35 years later, and how their relationship has evolved over the years.”
Ultimately, Ryan and Crystal decided to revisit ‘When Harry Met Sally’ as a limited series, which will explore the lives of the characters in present-day New York City. The actors revealed that they were excited to work on the project together again and to bring Harry and Sally back to life for a whole new generation of fans.
Fans of the original film can look forward to seeing Ryan and Crystal reprise their iconic roles in the upcoming limited series, which is set to premiere on a major streaming platform later this year.
