  • Twins Notes: Varland, Woods Richardson, Castro

The Twins entered the 2024 season with high hopes that prospect and Twin Cities native Louie Varland would step up and seize a spot in the rotation. The former 15th-round pick had the look of a late-round steal, having climbed to the No. 88 prospect in the game on FanGraphs’ top-100 rankings after pitching to a 3.06 ERA, 27.3% strikeout rate and 7.9% walk rate in 126 1/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A in 2022 and notching a 3.81 ERA through 26 frames in his MLB debut late that season. Varland posted a 3.97 ERA with similar strikeout and walk rates in 81 2/3 Triple-A frames in 2023 and then held his own with a 4.63 ERA and continued K-BB rates in his 2023 range.

The 2024 season, however, could scarcely have gone worse for Varland. He lasted four starts in the rotation before being optioned to Triple-A with a 9.18 ERA (17 runs in 16 2/3 innings). Varland had a rollercoaster season in Triple-A, resulting in a 4.75 ERA through 16 starts, though a disproportionate amount of damage came in one start that saw him tagged for a staggering 11 earned runs. (He had a combined 3.67 ERA in his other appearances.) A late look in the majors yielded poor overall results, though Varland did finish with a nice stretch of 7 2/3 innings, wherein he allowed two runs with an 11-to-2 K/BB ratio.

Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports that as the Twins gear up for 2025, it appears increasingly likely that Varland will be ticketed for a relief role. The St. Paul native averaged better than 95 mph on his heater last season even when working as a starter; it’s reasonable to expect that velocity to play up in a transition to a shorter role. Varland has posted at least average swinging-strike rates in the upper minors and big leagues as well, so it stands to reason that he could see an uptick in whiffs with a more powerful repertoire.

One reason it’s become easier to move a former rotation hopeful like Varland to the ’pen has been the reemergence of Simeon Woods Richardson. The former top prospect had tumbled down Minnesota’s starting pitching depth chart heading into ’24 after a dismal 2023 showing in Triple-A. But, as Woods Richardson explained in a sitdown with The Athletic’s Aaron Gleeman, an offseason and spring training of work with the Twins’ data team and coaching staff brought about a new arm slot that produced more velocity and a new-look slider that broke out as his most effective secondary pitch.

Woods Richardson wore down a bit late in the 2024 season as he pushed to a new career-high level in terms of workload (31 starts, 147 innings), but he finished the season with a 4.17 ERA, 20.6% strikeout rate and 8.4% walk rate. His four-seamer, which averaged just 90.7 mph in his brief MLB looks in 2022-23, sat at 93.1 mph on the season despite fading over his final six starts (92.1 mph average four-seamer, 6.75 ERA). Woods Richardson, acquired alongside Austin Martin in the trade that sent the final year-plus of control over Jose Berrios to Toronto, now looks like he’ll open the 2025 season locked into the No. 4 spot in Minnesota’s rotation behind Pablo Lopez, Joe Ryan and Bailey Ober.

Development from in-house arms of this nature will be key for the Twins in 2025, as ownership has handcuffed the baseball operations staff all offseason in terms of roster additions, as the Pohlad family explores a sale of the club. The Twins have been active in trade talks but have not yet pieced together a deal of much note. They’ve added some catching depth in small swaps for former top prospect Diego Cartaya and utilityman Mickey Gasper, but top trade candidates like Christian Vazquez and Chris Paddack remain with the club. The Twins still would like to add at first base and pick up a right-handed hitting outfielder, but there’s been no trade of note and not one major league free agent signing thus far, given payroll constraints from ownership. The Twins may not need to cut payroll from its current level, but they also don’t have much (or any) room to raise it without a trade that trims some salary from the books.

With those financial limitations in mind, the front office is considering some time at first base for utilityman Willi Castro, per Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Twenty-six-year-old Jose Miranda, who bounced back from a 2023 season ruined by shoulder surgery to bat .284/.322/.441 last year (115 wRC+) is the top in-house option at the moment. He’s played 698 big league innings there and graded poorly from a defensive standpoint, although the former second baseman/third baseman was largely learning the position on the fly in 2022 when he tallied 595 of those innings; he’d entered that season with all of 225 career minor league innings at the position.

It seems unlikely that Castro would be a regular option at first, given the value of his versatility. He’s a viable backup at shortstop, second base, third base and anywhere in the outfield. Adding first base to that repertoire only further broadens his importance to the club. There’s been some thought that Castro and his own $6.4MM salary could be a candidate to change hands, though doing so would thin out the Twins’ depth at all those positions and remove one of the team’s best baserunners. With Minnesota at least ostensibly not required to slash payroll any further, trading Castro seems like a scenario to which the front office would be heavily opposed.

  • Fans spot heartbreaking detail in old Liam Neeson interview about ‘beloved wife’ Natasha Richardson

Liam Neeson’s nostalgic confession in an interview with Conan O’Brien has caught the attention of his admirers, especially when he discusses his dearly-departed spouse. It was twelve years ago that Neeson appeared on O’Brien’s show where he recounted the quirky tale of signing fellow actor Ralph Fiennes’ name.

The conversation took a somber turn as it moved toward memories of Natasha Richardson, Neeson’s late wife who tragically passed away from head trauma after 15 blissful years of marriage in 2009. In the YouTube video, the actor recalls how often he got mistaken for Ralph Fiennes, reflecting on their similar facial features – their noses and foreheads.

“He won a Tony award for playing hamlet about 14 years ago, I have been complimented on my Hamlet quite a few times,” Neeson quipped to O’Brien.

Subsequently, wrapping a touching anecdote within his humor, Neeson changed to a more solemn tone, saying “forgive me for sharing it with you” before delving into the touching personal story, reports the Irish Star .

“I was with my beloved wife, we were in Paris staying at this…beautiful hotel. I was publicizing some movie, I can’t remember, but we’re walking through the corridor, and there were two elderly ladies and their husbands, they stood up as we passed and this lady came to us “excuse me, can I interrupt you for a second?

“I said ‘of course’ she says “well our husbands are about to go to the Normandy Beaches, 50th anniversary, they haven’t been there since the battle” and I was like I’m already coming out in goosebumps, and she says ‘we’ve admired your work so much’… so she’s talking away and these gentleman, they’re still standing out of respect,” Neeson explained. He continued on to say that the elderly woman asked him to sign something for them, and before Neeson was about to sign his signature, the woman said “we loved you in The English Patient.”

“So I singed it to Mildred and John, lots of love, Ralph Fiennes,” he explained as the crowd started to roar with laughter.

“There’s no way I could burst their bubble,” he added. YouTube users took to the comments of the post to point out that as soon as Neeson mentioned his former wife, his tone switched gears, as his voice went soft.

“I love how he pauses, “my beloved wife…” Gosh he loved her,” said one user. “That moment he takes takes before saying “beloved wife” just breaks my heart,” a person added.

“I love how he talks about his late wife…You can feel the love and respect he has for her,” another wrote.

Fans of Liam Neeson were left heartbroken after spotting a detail in an old interview where he spoke about his ‘beloved wife’ Natasha Richardson. The couple had been married for 15 years before Richardson tragically passed away in a skiing accident in 2009.

In the interview, Neeson spoke fondly of his wife, calling her his “beloved” and sharing how much he admired and respected her. Fans were moved by his words and were reminded of the deep love and connection the couple shared.

Many fans took to social media to express their sadness at the loss of Richardson and to share their admiration for the love that Neeson still holds for her. The interview served as a poignant reminder of the enduring impact that Richardson had on Neeson’s life and the deep bond they shared.

The heartbreaking detail in the interview touched the hearts of fans and served as a reminder of the love that Neeson and Richardson had for each other. Their love story continues to inspire and resonate with fans around the world.

  • Heat Notes: Butler, Young Core, Adebayo, Rozier, Richardson

Despite the fact that Heat star Jimmy Butler made it clear he reportedly no longer wants to play for the franchise, he may suit up for Miami on Friday, per Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald. Butler is eligible to return against Denver from his team-issued suspension and was not listed on Thursday’s injury report.

The six-time All-Star was expected to meet with Arison and CEO Nick Arison on Thursday afternoon to discuss a path forward.

As has been reported, there has been little progress on a potential trade. The Heat would prefer to get a trade done sooner rather than later but will only accept a deal that will help the team both now and moving forward.

We have more from the Heat:

    • The Heat went 3-4 during Butler’s suspension, including three consecutive wins against the Warriors, Jazz and Trail Blazers. The most promising aspect of the trip, The Athletic’s James Jackson writes, is the fact that all of Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware and Nikola Jovic showed flashes. Ware’s continuing to play a larger role as the season goes on. Teammate Tyler Herro expressed optimism about what he saw from those players during the stretch. “Ups and downs with a young player are normal,” Herro said. “I went through it myself. I think that’s the hardest thing: just finding consistency night in and night out. That’s a challenge for any young player. I think getting the reps every night is ultimately what young guys need, to be able to continue to get better and go through ups and downs, play through mistakes. But they’re all playing very well. You can see how good they can be, and I’m really excited for them.
    • Ware and Jovic have looked particularly good coming off the bench for Miami, often assisting on each other’s makes, Chiang observes in a separate piece. On the other hand, Bam Adebayo and Terry Rozier continued to be off the mark offensively, with Adebayo shooting a career-low from the field and Rozier shooting his lowest since the 2018/19 season.
    • Despite being active earlier this month and looking like he was on track to return soon, Josh Richardson went home from the team’s west coast road trip early for an MRI on his heel. Richardson was ruled out due to his heel, according to the team (Twitter link). It’s unknown at this time when Richardson will be able to return or what the results of the MRI were.

As we head into the heart of the NBA season, there are a few key players on the Miami Heat roster that have been making some noise. Let’s take a look at some of the standout performances from Jimmy Butler, the young core, Bam Adebayo, Terry Rozier, and Josh Richardson.

    1. Jimmy Butler: Butler has been a force to be reckoned with on both ends of the court for the Heat. He leads the team in scoring, assists, and steals, showcasing his versatility and leadership. Butler’s ability to take over games in crunch time has been a game-changer for Miami this season.

    2. Young Core: The Heat’s young core of Tyler Herro, Duncan Robinson, and Precious Achiuwa has been impressive this season. Herro has shown flashes of brilliance as a scorer and playmaker, while Robinson has been lethal from beyond the arc. Achiuwa has also made an impact on both ends of the floor with his energy and athleticism.

    3. Bam Adebayo: Adebayo continues to be a force in the paint for the Heat, averaging a double-double this season. His ability to defend multiple positions, facilitate the offense, and finish at the rim has been crucial for Miami’s success. Adebayo’s presence in the paint is a key factor in the Heat’s defensive prowess.

    4. Terry Rozier: Rozier, who was acquired in a trade with the Charlotte Hornets, has been a key contributor for the Heat this season. He provides scoring punch off the bench and has been a reliable option in clutch situations. Rozier’s ability to create his own shot and knock down threes has been a valuable asset for Miami.

    5. Josh Richardson: Richardson, who returned to the Heat this offseason, has been a solid contributor on both ends of the floor. His defensive tenacity and ability to knock down open shots have been key for Miami’s success. Richardson’s versatility and experience have made him a valuable piece of the Heat’s rotation.

Overall, the Miami Heat have a talented roster with a mix of veteran leadership and young talent. As the season progresses, these players will be key in helping the Heat make a deep playoff run. Keep an eye on Butler, the young core, Adebayo, Rozier, and Richardson as they continue to make an impact on the court.

  • NFL inactives Week 17: QBs Jalen Hurts, Anthony Richardson out, WR Christian Watson questionable

NFL inactives Week 17: QBs Jalen Hurts, Anthony Richardson out, WR Christian Watson questionable

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has been ruled for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys with a concussion.

Hurts has been in concussion protocol since his head hit the turf during Sunday’s loss to the Washington Commanders. Head coach Nick Sirianni said on Friday that it was “going to be tough for him to make it” after the quarterback did not practice this week.

Backup Kenny Pickett, who came in for Hurts for the rest of the Commanders game, will start in Hurts’ place.

Down in New Jersey, the Indianapolis Colts (7-8) hopes to keep its faint playoff hopes alive without Anthony Richardson, who will miss Sunday’s game with back and foot injuries. Joe Flacco will start Sunday at the New York Giants.

Richardson’s injury isn’t expected to sideline him for the regular-season finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to an ESPN report. This will mark the third game Richardson has missed with injury this season.

After suffering a bone bruise during Monday night’s win over the New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson has yet to practice this week.

After a Saints player fell on him, there was concern for Watson’s knee, but Packers head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed earlier this week that there was no structural damage and it was only a bone bruise.

On Thursday, LaFleur told reporters that even if Watson doesn’t practice this week, that doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t play Sunday against the Vikings.

“If he’s feeling up to it on Sunday, then I’m going to let him go. If he’s not, then we won’t let him go,” LaFleur said.

Watson is currently listed as questionable.

Here are the inactives for Sunday’s Week 17 games:

As we head into the final week of the NFL regular season, some key players are listed as inactive or questionable for their respective games. Among them are quarterbacks Jalen Hurts and Anthony Richardson, who will be sitting out this week. Hurts, the starting QB for the Philadelphia Eagles, is dealing with an injury that will keep him sidelined for the season finale. Richardson, the backup QB for the Jacksonville Jaguars, is also out with an injury.

In addition, wide receiver Christian Watson is listed as questionable for Week 17. Watson, a standout player for the North Dakota State Bison, has been dealing with a nagging injury that has limited his availability in recent weeks. His status for this weekend’s game is still up in the air, but fans are hopeful that he will be able to suit up and contribute to his team’s success.

With these key players out or questionable, teams will have to rely on their depth and versatility to secure important wins in the final week of the regular season. It will be interesting to see how these roster changes impact the outcomes of the games and potentially shape the playoff picture. Stay tuned for more updates as we approach kickoff!

  • What is Josh Downs’ DFS ceiling in Week 17 if Anthony Richardson sits?

Griffin Wong analyzes Indianapolis Colts WR Josh Downs’ DFS potential if quarterback Anthony Richardson sits in Week 17.

With sixteen weeks down, the AFC playoff picture has pretty much taken shape. Only the final two wild card spots remain up for grabs, with the Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos both at 9-6 and the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, and Cincinnati Bengals at 7-8. But Denver has a couple of tough games in Cincinnati and Kansas City, priming the Colts — who have the tiebreaker over both of their 7-8 contemporaries and play the bottom-feeding New York Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars in the last two weeks — to pounce if the Broncos slip up.

As if Indianapolis wasn’t enough of a wrench in the wild card picture, the Colts might be without their starting quarterback, Anthony Richardson, against New York. Richardson, the third overall pick in the 2023 Draft, missed practice all week with back and foot soreness and is officially questionable for the game. While neither Richardson ($5,900) nor backup Joe Flacco ($4,900) figures to be a huge factor in DFS contests like NFL $2.25M Fantasy Football Millionaire [$1M to 1st], the starting quarterback might impact the DFS ceiling of wide receiver Josh Downs ($4,800).

Despite missing three games this season because of a variety of injuries, Downs has been arguably Indianapolis’ most reliable receiver. He has hauled in 59 catches for 687 yards and five scores, better stats than Michael Pittman Jr. ($4,700), who began the season the Colts’ nominal No. 1 receiver. Pro Football Focus grades him as the eighth-best receiver in football, with Pittman the third-best Colt at No. 52 overall.

Normally, an injury to the starting quarterback wouldn’t be good news for a team or its top receiver. But Downs has been unequivocally better with Flacco as his signal-caller, catching 37 passes for 349 yards and two touchdowns in five games where Flacco took the majority of the snaps and only 22 catches for 338 yards and three scores in the seven games that Richardson has been the primary quarterback. Indianapolis went 2-3 in Flacco’s five games, and should be easily favored to beat the Giants, regardless of who lines up under center.

New York hasn’t been great at much this year, but it has excelled against opposing receivers. The Giants have been challenged less frequently through the air than all but five teams and have given up just 3,270 yards, the sixth-fewest in the NFL. They’ve also given up only 19 receiving touchdowns, tied for the eighth-fewest in the NFL. Overall, New York has allowed the eighth-fewest FPTS to opposing wideouts.

The Giants have an awful rush defense, so running back Jonathan Taylor ($7,900) is the obvious beneficiary of Sunday’s matchup. Still, Flacco’s strong connection with Downs should make him a strong DFS play if Richardson is ultimately ruled out.

With the uncertainty surrounding Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson’s availability for Week 17, many fantasy football players are wondering what kind of ceiling Josh Downs could have if Richardson is unable to play.

If Richardson sits, Downs could see an increase in targets and production as the primary receiving option for the Gators. With his speed and playmaking ability, Downs has the potential to put up big numbers against a vulnerable defense.

While Downs’ DFS ceiling is hard to predict without knowing Richardson’s status, it’s safe to say that he could be a high-upside play with the opportunity to have a breakout performance. Keep an eye on the injury reports leading up to game time to make an informed decision on whether to start Downs in your DFS lineup for Week 17.

  • Joe Flacco isn’t thinking about his future as he prepares to start, if Anthony Richardson can’t

Joe Flacco isn’t thinking about his future as he prepares to start, if Anthony Richardson can’t

Joe Flacco has started four games in place of Anthony Richardson this season. The Colts quarterback could start another this week.

If he does, there is a chance it could be the final start of Flacco’s career.

While Flacco has given no indication he plans to retire, he is 39.

“I just try to stay in the moment,” Flacco said, via Joel Erickson of the Indy Star. “People ask me all the time, ‘How long do you want to play?’ and I don’t have an answer for them.”

The Colts haven’t ruled out Richardson, who didn’t practice this week with back and foot injuries. But Flacco is preparing to start and getting all the first-team reps this week has readied him for the 190th start of his career.

“For me, at least, you’re able to go out there and get some practice reps that make you feel a little more comfortable going into the game,” Flacco said.

Flacco has hinted that he will play as long as a team wants him. He didn’t get an opportunity last season until late in the year when the Browns signed him. His play in six starts, including a wild-card playoff game, prompted the Colts to sign him in the offseason as the backup to Richardson and a mentor for the young quarterback.

“I just try to stay in the moment,” Flacco said. “People ask me all the time, ‘How long do you want to play?’ and I don’t have an answer for them.”

He has played 17 seasons. It remains to be seen whether he will make it to 18.

Joe Flacco isn’t thinking about his future as he prepares to start, if Anthony Richardson can’t

With rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson dealing with a nagging injury, veteran Joe Flacco has been thrust into the starting role for the upcoming game. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Richardson’s availability, Flacco remains focused on the task at hand and is not letting thoughts of his own future cloud his preparation.

“I’m just taking things one game at a time and trying to do my best to help the team win,” Flacco said in a recent press conference. “I know there’s a lot of speculation about what might happen if Anthony can’t go, but all I can control is how I prepare and perform on the field.”

Flacco, who has played for several teams throughout his career, understands the transient nature of the NFL and the ever-changing landscape of the quarterback position. While some may see this as a potential opportunity for Flacco to prove himself once again, he is simply focused on doing his job to the best of his abilities.

“I’ve been around long enough to know that anything can happen in this league,” Flacco added. “I’m just grateful for the chance to play and will give it my all, regardless of what the future may hold.”

As the team gears up for a crucial game, Flacco’s professionalism and dedication to his craft are evident. Whether he remains the starter for the foreseeable future or returns to a backup role, one thing is certain – Joe Flacco is ready to step up and lead his team to victory.

  • Colts downgrade Anthony Richardson; Joe Flacco starts vs. Giants

Colts downgrade Anthony Richardson; Joe Flacco starts vs. Giants

The Indianapolis Colts have ruled out quarterback Anthony Richardson ahead of Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.

Richardson had been listed as questionable on Friday’s final injury report after not practicing this week with foot and back injuries. Coach Shane Steichen said the back issue was the more pronounced of the two, saying, “He was just sore all week, really sore. So we just stayed smart there.”

A team source said Richardson was dealing with back spasms that had not been previously diagnosed.

Richardson will miss his third game of the season due to injury after being out for two games because of his oblique. Veteran backup quarterback Joe Flacco will start in Richardson’s place.

A source indicated that the injury was not expected to prevent Richardson from playing in the Colts’ regular-season finale.

The Colts remain alive in the playoff race and will still be in contention Sunday if the Los Angeles Chargers lose Saturday. The Colts would be eliminated with a Chargers win.

The Indianapolis Colts have made a surprising move, downgrading Anthony Richardson and naming Joe Flacco as the starting quarterback for their upcoming game against the New York Giants. This decision comes as a shock to many fans and analysts, as Richardson has been the starter for the Colts for the majority of the season. Flacco, a veteran quarterback with plenty of experience, will now have the opportunity to lead the team against the Giants. Stay tuned for updates on how this change will impact the Colts’ performance on the field. #Colts #JoeFlacco #AnthonyRichardson #NFL #Giants
