NFL refs favoring Chiefs is ‘ridiculous theory,’ Roger Goodell says
NEW ORLEANS – NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said at his annual Super Bowl-week news conference Monday that those who believe the Kansas City Chiefs receive preferential treatment from the officials are simply wrong.
“A lot of those theories happen in social media and they have a new life … I understand it, I think it reflects a lot of the fans’ passion,” Goodell said. “I think it’s also a reminder of how important officiating is.”
Goodell said he believes the individuals who call NFL games have the highest possible standards when it comes to integrity.
“That’s a ridiculous theory, for anyone who might take it seriously,” Goodell said. “But at the end of the day, it’s something we have to continue to work on: How do we make our officiating better at all times?”
The online hoopla reminded Goodell of last year’s narrative that the commissioner and others scripted the season from the league’s Park Avenue offices in Manhattan, New York.

“These officials are outstanding people – both men and women – and they go through a lot to become officials,” Goodell said. “It’s a tough job, a really hard job. … I’ve never seen a more dedicated group of people than NFL officials to getting it right, to doing the best job they possibly can, and I’m incredibly proud of them.”
Moderated by Curt Menefee, the FOX Sports host who offered a few table-setting talking points for Goodell, the session lasted about 45 minutes. Menefee asked about the existence of a universal sky judge and how the league can be more transparent.
“I think that’s something we continue to work on: communicate better, educate better,” Goodell said. “But also to use technology. … We want to use technology to supplement and support and assist the officials in getting it right.”
More plays may be available to “replay assist” – a quick decision from an official not on the field with access to more camera angles – after the league’s competition committee meets this offseason.
Whether or not that includes using tech to spot the football rather than the eyesight of human beings is a work in progress, Goodell said.
The league tested that technology in the preseason and Goodell said it is complicated by the shape of the football makes it more difficult. The NFL’s partners are working to advance that as quickly as possible, Goodell added, and the league is experimenting to determine whether it can be used in the flow of a game.
In a recent press conference, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell dismissed the idea that referees are favoring the Kansas City Chiefs in games. Goodell called the theory “ridiculous” and stated that the league takes the integrity of the game very seriously.Despite some controversial calls in recent Chiefs games, Goodell reiterated that the officials are trained to make fair and unbiased decisions on the field. He also emphasized that the league has strict protocols in place to ensure that all teams are treated equally.
While some fans and analysts have speculated about potential favoritism towards the Chiefs, Goodell’s comments suggest that the NFL is committed to maintaining a level playing field for all teams. It remains to be seen whether this will put an end to the speculation or if the controversy will continue to swirl around the Chiefs and their relationship with the referees.

Roger Goodell slams ‘ridiculous’ Chiefs-officiating conspiracy theory
NEW ORLEANS – Roger Goodell has a word for the popular conspiracy theory that the Chiefs are getting favorable calls from NFL officials in order to make sure their Patrick Mahomes-, Travis Kelce-, Taylor Swift-fueled dynasty keeps winning.
“That’s a ridiculous theory,” the NFL commissioner said Monday at his annual pre-Super Bowl news conference, “for anyone who might take it seriously.”
The two-time defending champion Chiefs have been called for three defensive holding, one roughing the passer and one unnecessary roughness penalties over the last four years of playoff games, according to Sharp Football Analysis.
FL Commissioner Roger Goodell speaks during a press conference ahead of the Super Bowl LIX at Caesars Superdome on February 03, 2025. Getty Images Their opponents in those games have been flagged for 22 of those same big-yardage penalties.
Moreover, the Chiefs have been called for 41 cumulative penalties to the opponents’ 71.
Across 11 games, the Chiefs have accumulated more penalties than the opponent once but never more penalty yardage.
“This sort of reminds me a little bit of the script, right? That I write the script and have the script for the entire season,” Goodell quipped, mocking a past conspiracy theory.

It reflects a lot of the fans’ passion. It also is a reminder for us how important officiating is.”
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has publicly slammed the “ridiculous” conspiracy theory that claims the Kansas City Chiefs are receiving preferential treatment from officials. In a recent press conference, Goodell addressed the rumors that have been circulating online and among fans, stating, “There is absolutely no truth to these conspiracy theories. Our officials are held to the highest standards of integrity and impartiality, and any suggestion otherwise is simply unfounded.”
The controversy surrounding the Chiefs’ perceived advantage in officiating has been fueled by a series of close calls and controversial decisions in recent games. However, Goodell emphasized that these calls are made based on the rules of the game and not on any bias towards a particular team.
As the NFL continues to investigate and address any concerns regarding officiating, Goodell urged fans to focus on the excitement of the game and not get caught up in baseless conspiracy theories. He reiterated that the integrity of the sport is of the utmost importance and that the league is committed to ensuring fair and consistent officiating for all teams.
So, while the Chiefs may be dominating on the field, there is no evidence to suggest that they are receiving any special treatment from officials. Goodell’s strong stance against the conspiracy theory serves as a reminder to fans to focus on the game itself and leave the speculation behind.

Roger Goodell Calls Out ‘Ridiculous Theory’ About NFL Refs Favoring Chiefs | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Chris Graythen/Getty Images
As the Kansas City Chiefs gear up for their third straight Super Bowl appearance on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, they’re still facing detractors who believe they reached this point because they get favorable calls from officials.
“It reminds me of the script, that I write a script for the entire season… It’s a ridiculous theory, for anyone who might take it seriously,” Goodell said.
Goodell added that the league is constantly exploring ways to improve its officiating and may add ways to review plays, such as facemask penalties, going forward.
“I’m proud of what they do, but that doesn’t mean we’re not trying to get better,” Goodell told reporters.
When asked if there would be a penalty for players like Kansas City star quarterback Patrick Mahomes flopping to draw penalties, Goodell said he doesn’t view that as a significant issue, but he wouldn’t be surprised if the competition committee discussed it in the future.
The Chiefs’ 15-2 finish to the 2024 season wasn’t without its hardships. Many wins came down to the last minute, as Kansas City was fortunate to have some calls go their way. Of course, that didn’t help the perception that the back-to-back reigning Super Bowl champions were being gifted the opportunity to achieve the first three-peat in modern NFL history.
For example, in the AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills, star quarterback Josh Allen was ruled short on a crucial fourth-down play despite appearing to have picked up the first down. The play swung the momentum in the Chiefs’ favor, helping them secure a 32-29 win. Unsurprisingly, the controversial play was one of the biggest talking points after the game.
Fans will certainly be paying close attention to Sunday’s Big Game, as the Eagles will be the last to try their hands at knocking the Chiefs from their perch. Any questionable plays that work in Kansas City’s favor will certainly be under a microscope following the Super Bowl.
In a recent press conference, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed the growing speculation that NFL referees are favoring the Kansas City Chiefs in their games. Goodell called the theory “ridiculous” and stated that the league takes the integrity of the game very seriously.Goodell went on to explain that all NFL referees are held to the highest standards and are trained to make unbiased and fair calls during games. He emphasized that any accusations of favoritism towards a particular team are not only unfounded but also damaging to the reputation of the league.
The controversy surrounding the alleged favoritism towards the Chiefs has been fueled by several close calls and controversial decisions in their recent games. However, Goodell stressed that these incidents are simply part of the game and should not be taken as evidence of any wrongdoing on the part of the officials.
As the Chiefs continue their quest for another Super Bowl title, it is clear that the spotlight will remain on both the team and the referees. But according to Goodell, fans can rest assured that the NFL is committed to ensuring that every game is officiated fairly and without bias.

Roger Goodell: Officials favoring Chiefs a “ridiculous theory”
Officiating is often a topic at NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s Super Bowl press conferences and it was no different in New Orleans on Monday.
An early question for Goodell concerned the feelings of some fans that officials favor the Chiefs at the expense of other teams. Goodell said he understood how fans could feel that way because of their passion for the game, but called it a “ridiculous theory.”
“A lot of those theories are things that happen on social media and they get a new life,” Goodell said.
Goodell added that such discussed shows how important officiating is and called the league’s officials an “outstanding” group of men and women dedicated to the game. He said the focus on the work they do is why the league has to constantly strive to make that part of the game better from year to year.
As for the Chiefs specifically, Goodell noted that 11 of their regular season wins came by one score and said it spoke to the competitiveness of the league rather than a bias toward any team.
In a recent press conference, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell dismissed the notion that officials are favoring the Kansas City Chiefs in games, calling it a “ridiculous theory.”Goodell addressed the issue after several controversial calls in Chiefs games sparked speculation that referees were showing bias towards the reigning Super Bowl champions. Fans and analysts alike have pointed to instances where questionable penalties or non-calls seemed to benefit the Chiefs.
However, Goodell vehemently denied any favoritism towards the Chiefs, stating that the league holds its officials to the highest standards of integrity and impartiality. He emphasized that the NFL is committed to fair and equitable officiating in all games.
While some may continue to believe in conspiracy theories about officiating, Goodell made it clear that he stands by the integrity of the league and its officials. Only time will tell if this controversy will continue to swirl around the Chiefs or if it will fade away as the season progresses.

Raiders Could Get Ridiculous Offer For Maxx Crosby
The Las Vegas Raiders are already well on their way to becoming a different team than they have been over the past two seasons. After going 14-22 over the past two seasons while continuing many of the same negative tendencies, the Raiders brought Tom Brady in this offseason to help with the turnaround.
Raiders owner Mark Davis and Brady quickly got to work, firing former general manager Tom Telesco and former head coach Antonio Pierce. The moves signaled a new era of Raiders football and paved the way for John Spytek to become the team’s new general manager and Pete Carroll to become the team’s head coach.
The new general manager-head coaching duo were the first significant changes made to the team this offseason. However, it is expected to be the first of many moves the Raiders make to improve this offseason, with their next focus becoming fixing the roster.
That will involve Spytek and the Raiders’ front office making arguable choices about the roster to improve it. The Raiders have 17 unrestricted free agents, many of whom are starters on their defense.
However, there could be another change made to the defensive this offseason.
With defensive end Maxx Crosby beginning to age and the Raiders potentially needing the next few years to be a legitimate contender, Jarrett Bailey of The Sporting News predicted the Raiders would trade the veteran defensive lineman for multiple first-round picks.
“Look at the current run of Bills’ first-round picks – Dalton Kincaid, Kaiir Elam, Greg Rousseau, Ed Oliver,” Bailey said. “Plus, Keon Coleman and A.J. Epenesa were the team’s top picks in 2024 and 2020, respectively, as second-round choices. None of these guys have turned into superstars and lived up to the spot in which they were drafted. Trade a pair of first-round picks for a true game-wrecking edge rusher that they haven’t had since Josh Allen was drafted. The Achilles heel for the Bills has been their lack of pass rush in big games. That immediately changes with Crosby.”
Bailey predicted the Raiders would get the Bills’ 2025 first-round pick, 2025 fourth-round pick, sixth-round pick, and 2026 first-round pick. Bailey also predicted the Bills would receive Crosby and the Raiders’ 2025 fourth-round pick.
While the offer is enticing, the Raiders have made it clear that trading Crosby is off the table.

The Las Vegas Raiders may soon be faced with a tough decision regarding star defensive end Maxx Crosby. According to reports, several teams around the league are preparing to make a ridiculous offer for Crosby, who has emerged as one of the top pass rushers in the NFL.Crosby, who recorded 13 sacks and 61 tackles last season, is entering the final year of his rookie contract. While the Raiders would love to keep him in silver and black for the long term, they may have to consider trading him if the offer is too good to pass up.
Teams are reportedly willing to offer multiple high draft picks and even players in exchange for Crosby, who has proven to be a game-changer on defense. The Raiders will have to weigh their options carefully and decide if the potential return is worth parting ways with a player of Crosby’s caliber.
It remains to be seen if the Raiders will ultimately pull the trigger on a trade involving Crosby, but one thing is for certain – they will have plenty of enticing offers to consider. Stay tuned as this situation continues to develop.

Why Trump’s ridiculous new line on the war in Ukraine matters
Given the circumstances, Donald Trump should probably stop talking about the war in Ukraine. The newly inaugurated president repeatedly promised voters that he’d end the devastating conflict before he was sworn in a for a second term, and he failed. The Republican also promised the public that he’d resolve the crisis “within 24 hours” of returning to the White House, and he failed.
In fact, by accounts, Trump didn’t even try.
But instead of changing the subject and hoping people don’t notice the obvious fact that he broke one of his most audacious campaign promises, the president can’t seem to help himself. NBC News reported:
President Donald Trump suggested in an interview that aired Thursday night that Ukraine should not have fought when Russia invaded it. ‘Zelenskyy was fighting a much bigger entity, much bigger, much more powerful,’ Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity. ‘He shouldn’t have done that, because we could have made a deal.’
The Republican added, “I could have made that deal so easily, and Zelenskyy decided that ‘I want to fight.’” In case that weren’t quite enough, Trump said in the same interview that Zelenskyy is “no angel,” adding that he “shouldn’t have allowed this war to happen.”
If this sounds at all familiar, it’s not your imagination. A few weeks before Election Day, Trump also blamed the Ukrainian president for the war, saying that Zelenskyy “should never have let that war start.”
An analysis by The Washington Post explained soon after, “Even in the context of Trump’s long-standing obsequiousness to Putin, it’s hard to understand how Zelensky would have prevented having his nation be invaded. He could, in theory, have taken the approach that many Trump allies have since endorsed: simply agreeing to cede some or all of Ukraine to Russia, a move that would have prevented the damage incurred to the country’s buildings but amplified the damage done to its sovereignty.”
Three months later, the president is again blaming Ukraine’s leader for the war Russia started. While it’s hardly surprising to see Trump echoing the Kremlin line — he’s been doing this for years — there are real-world consequences to absurdities like these.
In theory, the White House envisions a diplomatic dynamic in which the administration helps negotiate an end to the war. In practice, Trump is making it difficult, if not impossible, for the U.S. allies in Ukraine to see the American president as someone who can be trusted and relied upon.
Indeed, while Trump is blaming Ukrainian leaders for the fact that Russia invaded their country without provocation, he’s also making hollow and meaningless threats toward Moscow, vowing to impose trade tariffs on a country that we’re already not trading with.
In case that isn’t quite enough, Trump’s White House national security advisor, Mike Waltz, recently told ABC News that as far as the administration is concerned, it’s not “realistic” to think Russia will leave Ukrainian soil altogether, suggesting the White House envisions a resolution in which Putin is allowed to keep parts of Ukraine as a reward for launching a devastating and unnecessary war.
Two days before Election Day 2024, The Washington Post reported, “[I]nside Russia’s elite there is a growing expectation that Donald Trump will win and that if he does, there could be a chance to end the war with Ukraine on Moscow’s terms and potentially redraw the global security map.”
Nearly three months later, those Russian elites have reason to be pleased.
Trump’s recent comments on the war in Ukraine are not only absurd, but they also have serious implications for international relations and the security of the region. In a recent interview, Trump claimed that Russia was “cleverly outsmarting” the United States and its allies in Ukraine, and suggested that Ukraine should be part of Russia because “everyone speaks Russian there anyway.”This kind of rhetoric is not only dangerous, but it also undermines the sovereignty of Ukraine and emboldens Russia’s aggressive actions in the region. By suggesting that Ukraine should be part of Russia, Trump is essentially endorsing Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea and its ongoing military intervention in eastern Ukraine.
Furthermore, Trump’s comments are a slap in the face to the Ukrainian people, who have been fighting for their independence and territorial integrity since the start of the conflict in 2014. By downplaying their struggle and suggesting that their country should be absorbed by Russia, Trump is disrespecting the sovereignty and rights of the Ukrainian people.
Ultimately, Trump’s ridiculous new line on the war in Ukraine matters because it not only emboldens Russia’s aggression in the region, but it also undermines the international norms and principles that have kept the peace in Europe since the end of World War II. It is imperative that the United States and its allies stand firm in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and push back against any attempts to redraw borders through force and coercion.

Trump tells Putin to end ‘ridiculous war’ in Ukraine or face new sanctions
Donald Trump has warned he will impose high tariffs and further sanctions on Russia if Vladimir Putin fails to end the war in Ukraine.
Writing on his social media platform Truth Social, he said that by pushing to settle the war he was doing Russia and its president a “very big favour”.
Trump had previously said he would negotiate a settlement to Russia’s full-scale invasion launched in February 2022, in a single day.
Russia has not yet responded to the remarks, but senior officials have said in recent days that there is a small window of opportunity for Moscow to deal with the new US administration.
Putin has said repeatedly that he is prepared to negotiate an end to the war, which first began in 2014, but that Ukraine would have to accept the reality of Russian territorial gains, which are currently about 20% of its land. He also refuses to allow Ukraine to join Nato.
Kyiv does not want to give up its territory, although President Volodymyr Zelensky has conceded he may have to cede some currently occupied land temporarily.
On Tuesday Trump told a news conference he would be talking to Putin “very soon” and it “sounds likely” that he would apply more sanctions if the Russian leader did not come to the table.
But in his Truth Social post on Wednesday, he went further: “I’m going to do Russia, whose Economy is failing, and President Putin, a very big FAVOR,” he wrote.
“Settle now, and STOP this ridiculous War! IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE. If we don’t make a ‘deal’, and soon, I have no other choice but to put high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries.”
Continuing, he said: “Let’s get this war, which never would have started if I were President, over with! We can do it the easy way, or the hard way – and the easy way is always better. It’s time to “MAKE A DEAL”.”
Russia’s deputy UN ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy earlier told Reuters news agency that the Kremlin would need to know what Trump wants in a deal to stop the war before the country moves forward.
Meanwhile Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the World Economic Forum on Tuesday that at least 200,000 peacekeepers would be needed under any agreement.
And he told Bloomberg that any peacekeeping force for his country would have to include US troops to pose a realistic deterrent to Russia.
“It can’t be without the United States… Even if some European friends think it can be, no it will not be,” he said, adding that no-one else would risk such a move without the US.
While Ukraine’s leaders might appreciate this tougher-talking Trump – they have always said Putin only understands strength – the initial reaction in Kyiv to the US president’s comments suggest that it is actions people are waiting for, not words.
Trump has not specified where more economic penalties might be aimed, or when. Russian imports to the US have plummeted since 2022 and there are all sorts of heavy restrictions already in place.
Currently, the main Russian exports to the US are phosphate-based fertilisers and platinum.
On social media, there was a generally scathing response from Ukrainians. Many suggested that more sanctions were a weak reply to Russian aggression. But the biggest question for most is what Putin is actually open to discussing with Ukraine at any peace talks.
In Moscow meanwhile, some people are seeing signs that the Kremlin may be readying Russians to accept less than the “victory” once envisaged, which included tanks rolling all the way west to the southern Ukrainian port city of Odesa.
TV editor Margarita Simonyan, who is stridently pro-Putin, has begun talking of “realistic” conditions for ending the war, which she suggests could include halting the fighting along the current frontline.
That would mean the four Ukrainian regions that Putin illegally pronounced as Russian territory more than two years ago, like Zaporizhzhia, still being partially controlled by Kyiv.
Russian hardliners, the so-called “Z” bloggers, are furious at such “defeatism”.
In his social media post, Trump also couched his threat of tariffs and tighter sanctions in words of “love” for the Russian people and highlighted his respect for Soviet losses in World War Two – a near-sacred topic for Putin – though Trump massively overestimated the numbers and appeared to think the USSR was Russia alone. In reality, millions of Ukrainians and other Soviet citizens also lost their lives.
That said, the man who previously said he could “understand” Russia’s concerns about Ukraine joining Nato – which for Kyiv is tantamount to saying Putin was provoked – does seem to be shifting his tone.
Trump’s position matters. But after 11 years of war with Russia and a history of poor peace deals, Ukrainians are not inclined to be too hopeful.
In a recent development, former President Donald Trump has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the “ridiculous war” in Ukraine or face new sanctions.Trump, who has been known for his close relationship with Putin, stated in a tweet that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine is senseless and must come to an end. He urged Putin to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict and warned that failure to do so would result in further sanctions from the international community.
The statement from Trump comes as tensions continue to escalate in the region, with reports of increased Russian military activity near the Ukrainian border. The United States and its allies have expressed concern over the situation and have called on Russia to de-escalate the conflict.
It remains to be seen how Putin will respond to Trump’s warning, but the international community will be closely watching the situation as it unfolds. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

The Oregon Ducks appear to be getting something special in soon-to-be freshman wide receiver Dakorien Moore.
After a decorated high school career in Duncanville, Texas filled with jaw-dropping highlights, Moore added another to his reel on Friday night playing for Team Makai in the 2025 Polynesian Bowl.
Moore went up for a one-handed catch between two defenders, able to elude both after the catch en route to a 75-yard, game-winning touchdown. Team Makai beat Team Mauka, 28-21, in front of a rowdy crowd of fans in Honolulu that included Heisman winner Travis Hunter, who tried to celebrate with Moore after the touchdown.
Hunter slipped on the field, though, taking out Moore’s legs and perhaps causing some Oregon fans’ hearts to drop. Thankfully, both athletes were okay after falling, and the celebration continued.
Moore is one of Oregon’s highest-rated recruits ever, a consensus five-star prospect rated the No. 1 wide receiver and No. 4 overall player in the 2025 class according to 247Sports’ composite rankings.

While often picturesque, full of perfectly manicured lawns and neighborly people, suburbia typically has more going on than what meets the eye. “In Starz’s six-part psychological thriller “The Couple Next Door” (which first aired in the U.K. on Channel 4 in 2023), a young couple is thrilled to put down roots in the suburbs of Leeds, England. Pete (Alfred Enoch, of “How to Get Away With Murder”) and Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson) are excited to embark on a new chapter of their lives. Still, they don’t expect to establish a friendship with their neighbors, Danny (“Outlander” star Sam Heughan) and Becka (a particularly good Jessica De Gouw), to forever alter their relationship and their lives. Based on the Dutch series “Nieuwe Buren,” and written by David Allison, the show is highly bingeable, deliciously sexy and completely ridiculous.”
“The Couple Next Door” opens with a bang. A gunshot rings out in the woods, and shortly thereafter, a barefoot Evie is seen running through the trees as Pete, Danny and Becka race behind her. Flashing back, the audience meets Pete and Evie the day they move into their subdivision. Friendly and energetic yoga instructor/influencer Becka immediately offers her policeman husband Danny’s services when she sees Pete struggling to unload a moving truck. From there, a bond between the couples forms. Despite being well-settled in her and Pete’s decade-plus-long relationship, Evie, a school teacher, is intrigued by the obvious passion Becka and Danny have. Their electricity awakens a sensuality within her that she’s desperate to explore. However, journalist Pete is content with the status quo in their vanilla marriage.
The series primarily focuses on the growing sexual tension among the foursome, especially after a spa weekend goes off the rails. Allison also pads the narrative with several other storylines. Danny and his colleague Gary (Joel Morris) get entangled in some drama involving a local gangster. Unfortunately, the plot never fleshes out to completion. Additionally, Danny is forced to confront some skeletons from his past. While it’s evident that he’s imperfect, his choices lean toward soap opera territory and could have been tapered slightly to be more realistic. Moreover, the addition of a random Christian-based cult falls fully into trashy beach-read territory.
There is also an intense subplot involving yet another neighbor. Alan (a fantastic Hugh Dennis), an older man, has developed an unhealthy fixation on Becka. The fallout from his delusion showcases how women are often punished for the wrongdoings of men. Instead of the cop drama narrative, this diversion might be richer had it focused on the roots of Alan’s infatuation, his marriage with his long-suffering wife Jane (Kate Robbins) and why this entire suburban community seems nearly void of feminist and progressive women. (Surely, not every millennial in Leeds is deeply offended by the idea of sex work.)
Despite a wafer-thin plot, the acting (even with Heughan’s choppy Australian accent) holds the show together. Though the actors are given very little to work with, feelings of anguish, betrayal, longing and desire are all palatable. Enoch soars as a man who can’t quite reconcile what his life has become. Heughan is sharp as a hyper-masculine cop who wants to do the right thing but falls back on his avoidant and emotionally withdrawn coping mechanisms. Tomlinson had perhaps the greatest task in depicting a woman who tries to step outside of what is expected of her while trying to heal from past traumas. Yet, it’s De Gouw who really sparkles in the series. She’s magnetic and agile, giving real depth of character to a woman who could have been a cliché, cookie-cutter depiction of a “hot” mom.
Though the show has its predictable (and absurd) bits – including the fact that it seems to want the audience to see Enoch as an average-looking man — the chemistry among the cast members blazes throughout. Showcasing relationship breakdowns, non-monogamous and otherwise, due to the unwillingness or inability to communicate effectively, make up for the more puzzling narrative stumbles. Ultimately, “The Couple Next Door” is no revelation, but it’s still a fun, guilty little treat.
“The Couple Next Door” premieres Jan. 17 on Starz, with new episodes dropping weekly on Fridays.
