CLEVELAND — There was one play on which Jerry Jeudy managed to get one foot down on a leaping sideline catch in the second quarter of Sunday’s 20-3 loss to the Miami Dolphins. The problem was the Browns wide receiver couldn’t get the second one down to complete the catch.
On the very next play, Jeudy was targeted on a swing pass he couldn’t hold onto. Not only that, but it was initially ruled a lateral and a Miami fumble recovery.
Jeudy set career highs in targets (18) and receptions (12) on Sunday against the Dolphins. However, plays like those two were what stuck with him at the end of the night.
“The plays that you drop are going to be the one that’s in your head,” Jeudy said. “I just have to keep playing, not focus on those drops, just keep playing. Unfortunately, we didn’t come out with a win.”
The one that really stuck in Jeudy’s head was the Browns’ third-and-6 play to open the third quarter. He had managed to get inside position on a slant route against Miami cornerback Jalen Ramsey, only to drop the ball and lead to a punt.
Jeudy and Ramsey crossed paths again on the third play of the fourth quarter. This time, Ramsey broke up a fourth-down pass to Jeudy in the end zone from the Miami 3 that could have cut into a 13-3 lead.
“Hell, yeah, I’m frustrated,” Jeudy said. “They were crucial downs. The first one was a big deep over route that would have been a big play. The under (route) third down, and the bubble (screens), I’m just too ready to make a play. I can’t have those drops like that.”
The fifth-year wide receiver finished with 92 yards on his 12 catches. The 18 targets and 12 catches came on a heels of last Sunday’s game in Cincinnati where, in quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson’s first start of the season, he was targeted just three times with two catches for 20 yards.
On Sunday, whether or not it was intentional, the second-year quarterback seemed to be trying to get the ball to Jeudy, who has 1,166 receiving yards this season, the sixth-highest single-season total for a Browns pass catcher.
“DT threw some great balls today,” Jeudy said. “I’ve just got to make a play on it, I’ve got to catch it. I thought he did a great job. I’ve just got to play better for him.”
‘Ridiculous’ mistakes continue to compound Cleveland Browns
The theme for the Browns this season has been mistakes. There are turnovers, then there are penalties and then there are the miscellaneous missed assignments and mental errors that have led to their worst season since 2017.
That’s coming off of an 11-win season and trip to the AFC playoffs just a year ago. The eight-win drop-off is the largest from one season to the next in franchise history.
“It’s not pretty at all,” safety Grant Delpit said. “It’s pretty ridiculous, as a matter of fact, given our expectations coming into this year. We have to fix it in the offseason and come back ready to win.”
Delpit pointed to the way mistakes seem to compound on each other. It wasn’t just about the offense stacking miscue on top of miscue.
All three phases had their hand in creating the dismal avalanche that ultimately buried the Browns.
“Just seeing the snowball effect,” Delpit said. “One turned into two, turned into three, turned into four. That’s just how the theme of the year went. We didn’t do a good job of stopping the snowball effect.”
Isaiah McGuire continues to finish strong for Cleveland Browns

McGuire picked up his second sack in as many games against Miami. Beyond that, he had two tackles for loss and three quarterback hits.
“Like I said, control what you can control,” McGuire said, “continue to push forward, continue to see where you can get better as an individual to help the team. I know I could have played better and just to look at the film after this and continue to keep going.”
McGuire has 2.5 sacks and forced three fumbles this season. He’s seen his playing time increase substantially the last couple of weeks because of a knee injury to Ogbo Okoronkwo.
Key injuries piling up for Cleveland Browns as season reaches final week
The Browns are a beat-up group going into the season finale at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Baltimore against the Ravens. That’s not even taking into account the three players — tight end David Njoku (knee), Okoronkwo (knee) and wide receiver Cedric Tillman (concussion) — who did not play Sunday.
Running back Jerome Ford suffered an ankle injury with 6:02 remaining in the second quarter. He did come back in the game, but only sparingly.
On top of that, Ford’s backup, Pierre Strong Jr., left the game at the two-minute warning to be evaluated for a concussion. There was no immediate update on his status, although Ford was ready for anything.
“Same way we always handle it,” Ford said. “Back to work. Next man up.”
The bigger concerns were on the defense. Both cornerback Denzel Ward and linebacker Jordan Hicks were injured late in the first half.
Ward suffered a shoulder injury and was immediately ruled out. Hicks was ruled out with a concussion.
“Yeah, it’s way too early to tell on injuries,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said.
