  • Burbank man sentenced to prison for spraying officers during Capitol riot – NBC Chicago

A southwest suburban man accused of assaulting law enforcement officers during the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot was sentenced Friday to three years in federal prison.

William Lewis, 58, pleaded guilty to a felony count of assaulting, resisting or impeding officers. He was sentenced to 37 months in prison with two years of supervised release, and he was ordered to pay $3,761 in restitution.

Lewis, of Burbank, drove to Washington on the day of the rally to join other supporters of Donald Trump to protest the results of the 2020 presidential election, prosecutors said.

After the rally, Lewis went to the building’s West Plaza where lines of U.S. Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police Department officers were trying to hold back a group of rioters from pushing through toward the Capitol building, prosecutors said.

Lewis sprayed streams of wasp killer toward officers on four occasions until he emptied the can. One officer reported that he was sprayed in the mouth, and that he experienced a burning sensation on his face and eyes, according to prosecutors. He then threw the empty can at officers.

A few minutes later, Lewis went to the building’s Lower West Terrace and stole a police baton, which he used to smash three panes of a large window into the Capitol building, officials said.

Lewis was arrested in November 2023 in Burbank.

More than 50 Illinois residents, and more than 1,500 people from across the country, have faced criminal charges in connection with the Jan. 6 riot.

Trump has promised to pardon many of those charged in the attack once he retakes office next week.

On January 6, 2021, a Burbank man was sentenced to prison for his involvement in the Capitol riot. According to NBC Chicago, the man was charged with spraying officers with a chemical irritant during the violent insurrection.

The man, whose name has not been released, was found guilty of assaulting law enforcement officers and obstructing an official proceeding. He was sentenced to serve several years in federal prison for his actions on that fateful day in Washington D.C.

The violent events that transpired at the Capitol on January 6 shocked the nation and left a lasting impact on the fabric of American democracy. The sentencing of this Burbank man serves as a reminder that those who participated in the riot will be held accountable for their actions.

As we continue to reflect on the events of January 6, it is important to remember the bravery and sacrifice of the law enforcement officers who put themselves in harm’s way to protect the Capitol and uphold the rule of law. We must never forget the consequences of resorting to violence and extremism in pursuit of political goals.

  • DOJ recommends 20 years behind bars for man convicted for role in Capitol riot

The Justice Department has recommended that a Pennsylvania barber convicted in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot face 20 years behind bars.

Ryan Samsel was found guilty in February 2024 on several charges, including assaulting federal officers, carrying out an act of physical violence on the Capitol grounds and obstruction of an official proceeding.

The DOJ proposed a sentence of 240 months in prison, three years of supervised release, $2,000 restitution and a fine, according to court documents.

“A sentence of 240 months of incarceration reflects the gravity of Samsel’s conduct and provides sufficient deterrence given Samsel’s continued lack of remorse, active and public rehashing of false narratives, violent criminal history, and interest in assaulting the Capitol again,” the DOJ wrote in a memorandum.

Samsel was the first rioter to breach the restricted perimeter of the Capitol with other supporters of now-President-elect Donald Trump in an effort to delay the certification of President Biden’s 2020 election victory, according to the DOJ.

He was found guilty of verbally abusing officers, forcibly pushing and pulling on metal barricades, and assaulting an officer by lifting a metal barricade and striking him in the face with it.

Police subsequently became overwhelmed as “the floodgates opened” and “thousands of rioters poured onto the West Front of the U.S. Capitol grounds,” the DOJ said in the document.

“Samsel spent the next hour and a half terrorizing the police on the West Front,” the document said. “He assaulted the police with his flag, grabbed another officer’s shield, tore at scaffolding, flashed officers, grabbed a 2×4 plank and hurled it at the police line, and threw a pole at a different police line.”

“Samsel was proud of his actions on that day, taking the time to record a selfie video during the riot and announce with a smile that he had breached the Capitol,” the DOJ wrote. “Samsel was still proud of his actions years later when he told an interviewer that his actions on January 6th were justified, because ‘sometimes civil disorder is needed.’”

The Department of Justice has recommended that a man convicted for his role in the Capitol riot be sentenced to 20 years behind bars. This decision comes after the man was found guilty of participating in the violent insurrection that took place on January 6th, 2021.

The DOJ argued that the man’s actions were a direct attack on democracy and posed a serious threat to the safety and security of lawmakers and Capitol staff. They emphasized the need for a strong deterrent to prevent similar acts of violence in the future.

The man’s defense team has pushed for a lesser sentence, citing his lack of criminal history and remorse for his actions. However, prosecutors have stood firm in their recommendation, stating that a significant punishment is necessary to send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated.

As the sentencing hearing approaches, the fate of this man hangs in the balance. It remains to be seen whether the judge will follow the DOJ’s recommendation or opt for a different course of action. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Riot Does Not Care Netflix’s ‘Arcane’ Is Reportedly A Financial Miss

Riot Does Not Care Netflix’s ‘Arcane’ Is Reportedly A Financial Miss

Arcane is universally recognized as one of the best shows to ever air on Netflix with sky-high critic and audience scores across both of its seasons. But in terms of dollars and cents, new reporting says that the enormously pricey show was not exactly raking in cash for Riot Games, and may have lost them a bit. Luckily for Riot, leadership does not seem to care.

Reporting from Bloomberg details the sky-high cost, $250 million, and how that did not exactly work out, given that Netflix paid them $3 million an episode to air it, and paid Riot’s parent company Tencent another $3 million an episode for it to come to China. Added up, that’s about half the cost of production. Riot, however, says that it increased business in other ways and will “at least break-even.”

The report also says some employees did not love the idea of sinking resources into Arcane, especially when Riot laid off 11% of its staff.

“Arcane’s very existence was controversial among some employees. Some Riot employees resisted the mandate to funnel resources into the show, according to six current and former staffers. The pricey passion project, backed by former Chief Executive Officer Nicolo Laurent, sapped precious resources from League of Legends, Riot’s most important business.”

The report says that the lack of revenue “paused” production on other shows, but in the wake of Arcane season 2 there were notable quotes from the show’s creator, Christian Linke, that they were heading to other regions and other characters for future series. There’s no word on how costs may come down to make that happen, if they ever do.

In the wake of all this reporting, Riot co-founder Marc “Tryndamere” Merrill made a reddit post saying that it was “cynical” to review Arcane through this financial lens.

“These people think we make things like Arcane to sell skins, when in reality we sell skins to make things like Arcane…Do we get everything right? Nope, but we are not focused on the short term extraction of profits – we are focused on delivering exceptional value to our audience over the long term, again and again and again. To be clear, Arcane crushed it for players and so it crushed it for us.”

It’s a noble philosophy, but when you are owned by a technology giant like Tencent, it’s impossible to imagine there are not financial pressures there on projects like this, which is what the original report says. And “selling skins to make Arcane” is essentially the definition of taking away from the core business of League of Legends if that’s where game revenue is heading.

There’s a running joke among Arcane fans that if players were interested in the world, if they hopped into the often impenetrable League of Legends they would bounce right off, and the original report said Arcane did in fact not add many new players. Though League of Legends does remain one of the largest games in the world.

Fans of the game and show, of course, do not care. If Riot wants to spend hundreds of millions on shows as good as Arcane, that’s a win for the audience, and at least according to Riot leadership, a win for them, if people like it and their universe continues to expand. But in any case, it is going to be years until this theory is tested again with a new series, if one does come to fruition.

Recently, it has been reported that Netflix’s highly anticipated animated series “Arcane,” based on the popular video game “League of Legends,” is not performing as well financially as expected. Despite this, the creators at Riot Games seem unfazed by the news.

Many fans and critics have praised the stunning visuals, complex storytelling, and well-developed characters in “Arcane,” making it a hit among viewers. However, it appears that the high production costs have not translated into the desired financial success for Netflix.

Despite the disappointing financial numbers, Riot Games has expressed confidence in the future of “Arcane” and its potential for growth. They have emphasized their commitment to creating quality content and engaging with their audience, regardless of the current financial standings.

It is clear that Riot Games values the creative process and the impact “Arcane” has had on its dedicated fanbase. While the financial success of the show may not be as high as expected, it is apparent that Riot Games is more focused on the long-term success and impact of their creations.

In conclusion, it is evident that Riot Games does not care about the financial setbacks of “Arcane” on Netflix. They remain dedicated to delivering quality content and engaging with their audience, regardless of the financial outcomes. Fans can rest assured that Riot Games will continue to prioritize creativity and storytelling in their future endeavors.
