  • Ranji Trophy – Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant miss out, Siddharth Desai misses perfect ten

Highlights from the opening day of the sixth round of matches

Rohit’s big miss on Ranji return

Rohit Sharma‘s Ranji Trophy return after nearly 10 years wasn’t as memorable as he’d hoped it would be. His 19-ball vigil brought him 3, and he was out caught off the leading edge while attempting a half-nudge, half-pull into the leg side off a rising delivery from Jammu & Kashmir’s Umar Nazir. It was reminiscent of two recent Test dismissals for Rohit: against Pat Cummins at the MCG, and against Matt Henry at the Wankhede Stadium.

Rohit’s dismissal quickly followed Yashasvi Jaiswal’s after Mumbai opted to bat first. Ajinkya Rahane, the captain, and Shreyas Iyer also managed just 12 and 11 respectively in a first innings that lasted just 33.2 overs with Mumbai bowled out for 120. But excellent work with the ball means Mumbai have a chance of limiting their deficit to under three figures.

Rohit’s return to the domestic set-up comes on the back of the BCCI’s new guidelines, which have come into force since India’s 3-1 reversal in Australia earlier this month. Rohit’s Test future hangs in the balance after he opted out of the Sydney Test, but he has reiterated that he hasn’t retired and is still hopeful of leading the team in Tests.

Gill and Punjab collapse against swing and seam

In Bengaluru, Shubman Gill‘s outing was equally forgettable, not just with the bat but on the field as captain too. Punjab, who were missing Abhishek Sharma, were bowled out for 55 with Gill managing just 4 before nicking behind as swing and seam bowlers ruled on a greenish deck at the Chinnaswamy. By stumps, Punjab were so far behind in the game that they’ll probably need a Gill special to even salvage one point from the match.
Gill’s return to domestic cricket presented an opportunity for him to get some match time and confidence back following underwhelming returns in Australia where he featured in just three of the five Tests, while aggregating 93 runs in five innings. His returns outside Asia since the 2021 World Test Championship final have been in particular focus – he averages 17.64 across 18 innings.

Pant misses out; Jadeja takes five on Rajkot turner

In Rajkot, Rishabh Pant lasted just 10 deliveries as he was out to Dharmendrasinh Jadeja. Pant’s dismissal was part of Delhi’s top-order collapse against spin. Ravindra Jadeja, a formidable threat on turners, thrived in conditions tailor-made for him as he picked up his 35th first-class five-for as Delhi were bowled out for 188.

In reply, Saurashtra were adrift by 25 at stumps but had lost five wickets, including those of Cheteshwar Pujara and Jadeja, who has top-scored so far with 38. Pujara, who isn’t part of India’s Test plans, made just 6. Apart from the 234 he made against Chhattisgarh, Pujara has endured modest returns so far this season, managing scores of 16, 0, 2, 3 and 14 in his other innings.

    Siddarth Desai misses perfect 10

Gujarat left-arm spinner Siddharth Desai picked up nine wickets in the very first session of play against Uttarakhand in Ahmedabad, and was in with a chance of becoming the second bowler – after Haryana’s Anshul Kamboj – to record a perfect 10 this season. That chance ended when Vishal Jayswal picked up the final wicket.

Desai ended with 9 for 36, the best figures in first-class cricket by a Gujarat player, bettering the record held by Jasu Patel who picked up 8 for 21 against Saurashtra in 1960-61. Desai who scalped a match haul of nine wickets on debut, against Kerala back in 2017-18, has emerged as Gujarat’s front-line spinner since Piyush Chawla left to return to his home state Uttar Pradesh.

    Khaleel takes maiden five-for

Eight years after he made his first-class debut, Khaleel Ahmed has picked up his maiden first-class five-for. This included key Vidarbha wickets including those of Karun Nair who was in prolific form at the Vijay Hazare Trophy. His figures read an impressive 15-5-37-5.

Khaleel’s performance coincides with his being on the fringes of the national team, especially with the selectors keen on looking for left-arm seamers, a style of bowler India’s Test attack has missed since Zaheer Khan’s exit. This is only Khaleel’s 17th first-class fixture – three of them have come in the current Ranji season (including this game), and two in August in the Duleep Trophy, in which he took nine wickets at 21.66.

The Ranji Trophy is in full swing and there have been some surprising results in the latest round of matches. Some big names in Indian cricket, including Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant, have missed out on making big contributions for their respective teams.

Rohit Sharma, who was playing for Mumbai, failed to make a significant impact with the bat in his team’s match against Karnataka. Shubman Gill, representing Punjab, also couldn’t get going and was dismissed for a low score against Delhi. Rishabh Pant, playing for Delhi, also failed to make a big score in the same match.

However, the standout performance of the round came from Siddharth Desai, who narrowly missed out on a perfect ten-wicket haul for Goa against Mizoram. Desai ended up with figures of 9 for 34 in the second innings, guiding his team to a comfortable victory.

Overall, it has been an exciting round of matches in the Ranji Trophy, with some unexpected results and standout performances. Fans will be eagerly looking forward to more action in the upcoming matches.

  • Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant tank miserably on Ranji Trophy return; out in single digits

India superstars Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill  and Rishabh Pant flopped miserably on their respective Ranji Trophy returns. India captain Rohit was dismissed for 3 off 19 balls, Jaswal managed just 5 off 8 balls, while Gill was sent back for 4 off 8 balls in round six of the Ranji Trophy. Pant, meanwhile was out for 1 off 10 balls.

Rohit Sharma walks back after getting dismissed for 3 in Mumbai vs J&K Ranji Trophy match

Playing his first Ranji Trophy match in nearly a decade, Rohit seemed completely out of sorts in the Mumbai vs Jammu and Kashmir Elite Group A match at the BKC ground in Mumbai. There was no sign of the free-flowing batter that once used to terrorise bowlers across the globe. J&K pacers Auqib Nabi and Umar Nazir gave him a hard time after Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane opted to bat first on Thursday morning.

After getting off the mark in the first over of the match with a single off Nabi’s bowling, Rohit got stuck at one end, failing to get on top of Nazir, who constantly troubled the Indian captain with his impeccable line and length. One delivery from Nazir bounced awkwardly from the good length to hit Rohit in the arm. So precise was Nazir, the only surviving member of the J&K team that beat Mumbai 10 years ago in the Ranji Trophy, that Rohit decided to skip down the track to upset his rhythm but failed to make any difference.

In the penultimate ball of the sixth over, Nazir pitched one short and wide. Rohit, in an identical manner in which he tried to combat Pat Cummins’ delivery in the first innings of the Melbourne Test, lifted his front leg and wanted to play the short arm pull shot but just like at the MCG, the ball got big on him and all Rohit managed was to sky it to mid-off.

    Jaiswal, Gill also disappoint

Before Rohit’s dismissal, Nabi gave his opening partners Jaiswal marching orders. J&K’s highest wicket-taker of the season got one to jag back in from a good length to trap Jaiswal right in front. The left-hander, who got off the mark with a sumptuous square cut off the second ball of the match, was guilty of staying back to ball, which could have been combated had he put in a good stride forward.

In the Karnataka vs Punjab match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, India’s No.3 Shubman Gill disappointed on his return to Ranji trophy after more than two and a half years. Gill, who last played for Punjab in July 2022, was out for 4.

Elsewhere, Rishabh Pant was dismissed for 1 off 10 balls in Delhi’s match against Saurashtra in Rajkot.

Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant, who are some of the biggest names in Indian cricket, made a disappointing return to the Ranji Trophy as they were all dismissed for single-digit scores in their respective matches.

Rohit Sharma, the Indian team captain, was dismissed for just 4 runs while representing Mumbai in their Ranji Trophy match against Railways. This was Rohit’s first Ranji Trophy appearance in over five years, and fans were hopeful of seeing a big innings from him. However, he fell cheaply, leaving his team in a tough position.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been touted as a future star of Indian cricket, also failed to make an impact in his Ranji Trophy comeback. The young opener managed just 8 runs for Mumbai before getting out, putting pressure on the middle order.

Shubman Gill, who has been in and out of the Indian team, was dismissed for a paltry 5 runs while playing for Punjab in their Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka. Gill, who was expected to lead Punjab’s batting, couldn’t deliver when it mattered the most.

Rishabh Pant, the explosive wicketkeeper-batsman, also had a forgettable return to the Ranji Trophy as he was out for just 6 runs while playing for Delhi against Tamil Nadu. Pant’s dismissal added to Delhi’s batting woes, and they were left reeling in their first innings.

Overall, it was a disappointing day for these star players as they failed to make an impact in their Ranji Trophy return. Fans will be hoping for a better performance from them in the upcoming matches to redeem themselves.

‘Wicket Was Doing Too Much’: Rishabh Pant Explains Change In His Batting Approach For Sydney Test

    Last Updated:

Rishabh Pant had a more defensive approach during the first innings against Australia in Sydney. The wicketkeeper batter explained that the difficult conditions forced him to adjust the way he played.

India’s wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant revealed that it was due to the nature of the pitch that the ace gloveman decided to take a defensive approach in the first innings of the fifth Test in Sydney on Friday.

Pant who usually bats with an aggressive approach, was seen taking a more quiet and defensive approach where he was the top-scorer for the side with 40 runs off 98 balls as India was all-out on 185.

“I think in this innings, I was not in a frame of mind where I wanted to take charge of the game because the wicket was doing too much and the kind of situation we were in,” Pant said in the post-day press meet.

“I would say there might be a 50-50 chance which I could have taken early on in this innings but sometimes you have to play more secure cricket, especially the way, wicket was behaving. We knew that if we lost one more wicket here, we might lose 2-3 in quick succession. So that was the idea behind the way I was playing,” he added.

The 27-year-old has been under fire for not playing according to the situation. But he admitted that he is growing as a player and also looking to take a balanced approach when batting in the middle.

“You want to bat the way that comes naturally to you but keep evolving and trying to keep a balance between attack and defence,” he commented.

India despite disappointing with the bat finished off the day on a positive note as the skipper, Jasprit Bumrah struck in the final ball of the day’s play to get rid of Usman Khawaja. The visitors will now hope to make some significant ground the next day to get themselves back in the contest. Pant feels that their first-innings score might not be ideal but there is enough to make it a competitive affair.

“I think I wouldn’t say it’s a par score, but I think anything over 220-250 would be a par score, but still a very competitive score because of the way the ball is moving now.

“I think there’s a lot of help for the bowler. It should remain the same, hopefully for us. But I feel it was a little tough. The ball was doing off the wicket quite a bit,” he assessed.

News cricket ‘Wicket Was Doing Too Much’: Rishabh Pant Explains Change In His Batting Approach For Sydney Test

In a recent interview, Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant opened up about his change in batting approach for the Sydney Test against Australia. Titled ‘Wicket Was Doing Too Much’, Pant explained that he decided to alter his usual aggressive style of play due to the challenging conditions at the venue.

Pant admitted that he realized the wicket was offering a lot of assistance to the bowlers and decided to be more cautious in his approach. He mentioned that he wanted to build a solid partnership with his fellow batsmen and ensure that India put up a competitive total on the board.

The young cricketer’s decision to adapt his game plan paid off as he went on to score a crucial 97 runs in the first innings of the Sydney Test. His innings provided much-needed stability to the Indian batting line-up and helped the team secure a draw in a challenging situation.

Pant’s mature approach and ability to adjust to the conditions demonstrate his growth as a player and his commitment to the team’s success. Fans are excited to see how he will continue to evolve and contribute in future matches.

  • Rishabh Pant Left Bruised By Australia Pacers, Responds WIth A Mammoth Six – Watch

Rishabh Pant Left Bruised By Australia Pacers, Responds WIth A Mammoth Six – Watch

It was a show of pure grit and resilience from Indian cricket team wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant on Day 1 of the fifth Test match against Australia in Sydney on Friday. Pant remained strong in face of fiery pace bowling from Australia and although wickets continued to tumble on the other end, he scored a significant 40 off 98 deliveries. During his innings, he was left bruised on the arm by a stinging delivery from Mitchell Starc while a bouncer from the same bowler hit him on the helmet. He was forced to receive treatment from the physio on multiple occasions but it did not dampen his spirits.

Pant targeted the debutant Beau Webster and in the 46th over of the match, he stepped down to the medium-pacer and heaved him for a brilliant six over long-on. The connection was so good that the ball got stuck in the sight screen and had to be retrieved by the ground staff with the help of a ladder.

Pant said he batted with restraint on the opening day of the fifth Test against Australia because character of the SCG pitch did not allow him to be in his customary aggressive self.

Pant, who copped severe criticism from all corners for his callous approach to batting during the previous Test at Melbourne, made a 98-ball 40 in India’s 185 all out on Friday.

“In this innings, I wasn’t in frame of mind where I felt I could take charge of the game looking at nature of the wicket,” Pant said in the post-day press meet.

“Sometimes you have to play secure cricket as there were occasions where I could have taken 50-50 chances but didn’t,” he added.

The left-hander also said he is evolving as a batter, trying to find the right balance between defense and aggression.

“You want to bat the way that comes naturally to you but keep evolving and trying to keep a balance between attack and defense.”

Pant admitted that a batter tends to complicate things when he is not batting well.

“When you are not doing well you tend to overthink,” he said.

Debutant Aussie all-rounder Beau Webster concurred with Pant’s view on the pitch.

“They (India batters) decided to knuckle down and made us bowl lot of overs. I am not sure what a good score on this track but we would have batted first had we won the toss,” said Webster.

  • Aus vs Ind BGT 5th Test Sydney Rishabh Pant ‘Sometimes you have to play more sensible cricket’

Aus vs Ind BGT 5th Test Sydney Rishabh Pant ‘Sometimes you have to play more sensible cricket’

Rishabh Pant has come under criticism for the risks he has taken during this Border-Gavaskar Trophy, risks that have left him with scores of 37, 1, 21, 28, 9, 28, 30. Perception from both outside the Indian team, and inside it, is that he doesn’t rein in his natural game when he needs to.

Pant showed he could bat differently in Sydney where Australia’s discipline on a pitch with seam movement and bounce resulted in him taking body blow after body blow in an innings where he faced 98 balls and hit only four of them to the boundary. He came in to bat just as India lost a little bit of their advantage, losing a wicket the last ball before lunch, to become 57 for 2 after 25 overs.

Pant took them to tea for the loss of one more wicket, batting in a way he normally doesn’t. India were 107 for 4 after 50 overs.

“I think in this innings I was not in a frame of mind where I wanted to take charge of the game because the wicket was doing too much,” he said. “And the kind of situation we were in and while playing inside I felt like I could do like play a little bit of defensive cricket yes there is a time to attack but when you have to feel that from inside. I can’t just pre-meditate that I’m going to play this way whatever the game asked me to do on that given day that’s what I try to do and that was the mindset.”

Following the defeat in Melbourne, Gautam Gambhir, the India coach, had communicated the need for a team-first approach where all the players need to decide whether their natural game would help their cause or hinder it. Four days ago, Rohit Sharma had placed the onus on Pant to figure out what was best for both himself and the team.

“I think it’s a little bit not very difficult,” Pant said as he spoke about prioritising survival over strokeplay. “Yes, initial part would be very difficult because when you see a ball which you can hit but sometimes you have to play more sensible cricket, I would say. Like there might be 50-50 chance which I could have taken early on in this innings but sometimes you have to play more secure cricket especially the way [SCG] wicket was behaving we knew that if we get one more wicket here we might lose two-three in a quick succession so that was the idea behind the way I was playing and last match there was nothing much to do the kind of target we had I think I had to play that [defensively] way so I think pretty fine with the way I’m playing.

Pant is in no mood to sacrifice his gifts entirely. “I think mostly you want to back whatever the way you have played game but eventually you gotta keep on evolving. There is, I feel, there is not one way to play cricket but whatever comes more naturally is always better but you’ve got to find that balance between playing aggressive cricket and having that balance when you play all those shots and that’s what I’m trying to do.

“Just trying to make most out of whatever the way I’m playing and just keep it simple not to overthink because you know when you’re not having best of the tours you might overthink too much but I just try to keep it simple and give my 200% on the field and that’s the idea about playing cricket for me.”

Rohit decision was a management call – Pant

India went into the Sydney Test with their captain Rohit sitting out after a prolonged spell of bad form, alongside poor results. “I think definitely it was an emotional decision,” Pant said, “Because he’s been captain for a long time we see him as a leader of the team but I think there are some decisions which you are not involved with and it’s a very management call so I was not part of that conversation so can’t explain anything other than that.”

Bumrah who took over in Rohit’s stead had a simple message for India. “I think mostly the message is like be positive all the time don’t think what has already happened just give your best on the field,” Pant said, “And that’s what you want from your captain like being in a positive frame of mind and keep moving the game forward each and every day.”

India felt they ended up on the wrong side of a DRS call, when an on-field decision of not-out was overturned in the last session and Washington Sundar was eventually adjudged caught behind. There was a murmur on Snicko as ball passed the glove. Umpire Joel Wilson took that as confirmation of contact. In the previous Test, Yashasvi Jaiswal was caught behind and there he definitely hit the ball but Snicko did not corroborate that evidence. Pant felt technology needed to get better.

“I think there is not much to say because technology is one part which as a cricketer you can’t control,” Pant said, “But I feel whatever decision we make on the field it has to stay with the on-field umpire that’s the only thing until unless it’s so conclusive to change the decision I think we should stay with on-field umpire rest is umpire’s decision end of the day I can’t challenge that every day but technology can be a little better I guess.”

The much-anticipated 5th Test match between Australia and India in Sydney has certainly lived up to the hype, with both teams putting on a thrilling display of cricket. One player who has stood out in this match is Rishabh Pant, whose aggressive batting has been a highlight for the Indian team.

Pant’s fearless approach to batting has won him many fans, but as he himself admits, there are times when he needs to rein in his natural instincts and play a more sensible game. In a post-match interview, Pant acknowledged the importance of balancing aggression with patience, stating, “Sometimes you have to play more sensible cricket and assess the situation before going for big shots.”

This maturity and self-awareness from Pant bode well for his future as a cricketer, as it shows that he is willing to adapt his game according to the situation. With his talent and potential, Pant has the ability to become a key player for India in all formats of the game.

As the 5th Test match in Sydney continues to unfold, fans can expect more fireworks from Pant, but hopefully with a greater sense of responsibility and game awareness. It will be interesting to see how he navigates the challenges posed by the Australian bowlers and contributes to India’s chances of victory.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Aus vs Ind BGT 5th Test in Sydney and Rishabh Pant’s performance in the match. Let’s see if he can strike the right balance between aggression and sensibility to help India clinch the series.

Having dealt with a gruesome car accident, a red cherry hurtling into his body is perhaps the least of Rishabh Pant’s worries. He battled hard against the Australian attack and was India’s top-scorer with a 40 in the fifth Test that began at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday (January 3, 2025).

Struck eight times on his torso, Pant competed hard and was one of the bright spots in a dreary Indian first innings. Reacting to the tough outing, he said: “Definitely it’s painful but sometimes you have to do the hard work for the team and that’s okay. I was not thinking about where I got hit but just played the ball to the best of my abilities.” Later he added: “I think this is the first time I have been hit so much.”

Being in proximity when Jasprit Bumrah and Sam Konstas exchanged words, Pant explained: “They wanted to waste some time. I feel that’s the reason. He had a conversation with Jassi (Bumrah). He said something. I didn’t hear. He wanted to waste some time so we don’t bowl one more over.”

Queried about his pitch-impressions, Pant replied: “It was a little bit tough pitch. The ball was doing off the wicket quite a bit. I wouldn’t say 185 is a par-score. But I think anything over 220-250 would be a par-score, but still a very competitive score because the way the ball is moving, there is a lot of help for the bowlers.”

And on the Washington Sundar dismissal, Pant said: “I feel whatever decision we make on the field, it has to stay with the on-field umpire. Until and unless it’s (evidence) so conclusive to change the decision, I think we should stay with the on-field umpire. Technology can be a little better I guess.”

    Touch of emotion, says Pant

Rishabh Pant admitted to a touch of emotion within the ranks when news about Rohit Sharma missing the fifth Test spread. “He is our captain and obviously there will be some emotion. As for the decision, it was a management call so I was not part of that conversation so I can’t explain anything other than that,” Pant told the media here on Friday.

Asked for his inputs on Jasprit Bumrah as captain, Pant said: “Mostly his message is be positive all the time and don’t think about what has already happened, just give your best on the field. That’s what you want from your captain.”

[Watch] Travis Head’s interesting celebration as he dismisses Rishabh Pant on Day 5 of BGT 2024-25 4th Test

Australia’s Travis Head came up with an animated celebration after dismissing Team India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant. The incident took place on Day 5 of the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

After India were reduced to 33/3 while chasing 340, Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal stitched an important partnership to take the game towards a draw. However, the home side finally managed to make inroads after Head got the better of Pant moments after the tea break.

The ball was a fraction short and Pant went for the pull shot. However, he couldn’t get under the ball and thus, didn’t find the right placement. The ball went towards the wide of the long-on fielder and Mitchell Marsh ran a good few yards to complete the catch.

Head was animated and made some gestures to the dressing while celebrating the wicket. Rishabh Pant once again failed to convert the start and walked back after scoring 30 off 104 deliveries.

Rishabh Pant had an ordinary outing in the first innings as well, throwing away his wicket while trying to play a scoop shot.

Australia inch closer to victory with a few quick wickets

Rishabh Pant’s untimely dismissal shifted the game’s momentum in Australia’s favor, as Pat Cummins and company bounced back with a couple more wickets to take the driver’s seat.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja walked back after nicking one from Scott Boland, while first innings centurion Nitish Reddy edged one to Steve Smith at slips off Nathan Lyon. At the time of writing, India are placed at 132/6 and staring at a heavy defeat at the MCG.

Yashasvi Jaiswal (76*) and Washington Sundar (2*) will have to bat for another 28 overs to see off the Test and keep the five-match series at 1-1.
