  • Cooper Flagg leads Duke to blowout win over rival North Carolina

DURHAM, N.C. — In his first taste of the DukeNorth Carolina rivalry, Cooper Flagg delivered arguably the most complete performance of his career to lead the Blue Devils to a dominant 87-70 victory Saturday night.

Flagg scored or assisted on each of Duke’s first six baskets as the Blue Devils raced to an early lead, and his final line — 21 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocked shots — proved to be an emphatic debut in one of the country’s great rivalries. It was also the latest example that, as Duke coach Jon Scheyer said, Flagg is a basketball “savant.”

“It might be [my best college game],” Flagg said, “but for me, I’m just trying to make the right plays. Four of the first six baskets I assisted. That’s huge for me to find my teammates and make plays for them.”

The stellar performance still fell short of what Flagg might have done, Scheyer said. Flagg played all but the final 47 seconds of the second half, and Scheyer thought his star freshman was worn down toward the end, when North Carolina cut Duke’s lead from 32 with 9:04 to play to 16 at the 2:59 mark.

Flagg said he was angry with his — and Duke’s — performance in that late stretch, despite the lopsided win.

“It was a little bit of me being tired and making some dumb mistakes at the end,” Flagg said. “Being soft at the end kind of played into that.”

Scheyer took responsibility for Flagg’s slow finish but added it’s rare to post such gaudy numbers and still find room for criticism.

“He almost had a triple-double, and he wasn’t quite himself [at the end],” Scheyer said. “But besides that segment, he was just in control the entire game. He makes everybody better around him, and it’s a heck of a thing to have 21, 8 and 7 and you think he could’ve done more.”

Flagg’s ability to involve teammates was at the forefront of Saturday’s win. In the first five minutes, he racked up four assists, two steals and a rebound.

Fellow Duke freshman Kon Knueppel finished with a game-high 22 points and five assists. Flagg and Knueppel are the first teammates to each tally 20 points and five assists in a game in this rivalry in 15 years. The last duo was Duke’s Scheyer and Nolan Smith.

“They absolutely feed off each other,” Scheyer said. “It starts with their competitiveness. They play both sides of the ball. They have high-level feel. … Add in their skill and versatility. Kon’s posting and shooting and pick-and-roll. And everybody knows, Cooper’s already doing everything. They have a great thing. There’s a lot of maturity with both of them.”

Despite that maturity, this was still their first time experiencing the rivalry. As a recruit, Flagg sat behind the Duke bench last season as the Tar Heels mustered an 84-79 win in Cameron Indoor Stadium. North Carolina players chirped at Duke’s squad throughout, and Flagg said he remembered the Tar Heels taunting the Cameron Crazies after it was over, which he said added a bit of motivation this time.

Flagg admitted to some pregame nerves in an environment he described as “really loud and hot,” but he said once the game tipped off, he was locked on the action.

“You could definitely feel a different energy tonight,” Flagg said. “For us, it’s just another game. We came out and executed our game plan, did what we were trying to do, and came out with the win. It’s another game, and we’re chasing a big mission this year.”

In a highly anticipated matchup between bitter rivals Duke and North Carolina, Cooper Flagg proved to be the difference maker as he led Duke to a dominant blowout win.

From the opening tip-off, Flagg set the tone with his aggressive play on both ends of the court. His ability to drive to the basket and finish with authority, as well as his tenacious defense, kept North Carolina on their heels throughout the game.

Flagg’s leadership and scoring prowess were on full display as he poured in a game-high 30 points, showcasing his versatile skill set and ability to take over a game when his team needed him most.

Not only did Flagg shine individually, but he also got his teammates involved, creating scoring opportunities for his fellow Blue Devils and helping to build a commanding lead that North Carolina couldn’t overcome.

By the final buzzer, Duke had secured a resounding victory over their rivals, with Flagg’s stellar performance leaving a lasting impression on all who witnessed his dominance on the court.

With Flagg leading the way, Duke looks poised to make a deep run in the postseason, and their rivals will surely be on notice as they continue to showcase their talent and determination to succeed.

  • Dodgers Rival Reportedly Interested in Signing Kiké Hernández: Report

Utility man Kiké Hernández played a key role in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ World Series run, but three months later he is drawing interest from the very team he helped defeat, the New York Yankees.

The New York Post’s Mark W. Sanchez reported the Bombers have checked in on Hernández this winter, indicating the fan favorite’s free agency process, which has been fairly quiet, could get very interesting.

“A source said the Yankees have inquired on Hernandez, whom they also asked about last winter,” Sanchez wrote.

The thought of Hernández in pinstripes is somewhat ironic, especially after his remarks at the World Series parade. During his speech to Dodgers fan, Hernández made sure to call out rapper Fat Joe’s performance ahead of Game 3 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium.

“This guy, used to be fat,” Hernández said. “He’s not fat anymore. His name is Joe. We didn’t need to play, because after that performance we had already won.

    “They not like us, baby.”

While Dodger Fest takes place Saturday, many fans are still anxious for the Dodgers to bring back Hernández this offseason. Even players have expressed hope for a Dodgers, Hernández reunion.

“I’m praying to God that we can bring Kiké (Hernández) back,” Teoscar Hernández said Monday on Dodgers Territory. “I miss Kiké and I want him to be a Dodger.”

The October hero was candid when he was asked about free agency just a few days after the Fall Classic at a Raising Canes partnership event.

“I would love to be back,” Hernández said. “I truly believe that — we won the World Series a couple days ago — but I truly believe that this team is gonna be even better next year with all the pitching reinforcements.”

Hernández was indeed correct, the Dodgers have fortified their pitching staff adding starting pitchers Blake Snell and Roki Sasaki along with relievers Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates. While the Dodgers’ blockbuster signings have shocked and awed the baseball world, the defending champions still need to address whether Hernández will return to Los Angeles.

Although Sanchez reported the Yankees have shown interest in the Dodgers fan favorite, he also said Hernández’s most likely landing spot is L.A.

“The most likely destination for Hernandez, though, is probably back in Los Angeles, and the Dodgers will have open roster spots when they are able to slide injured players to the 60-day injured list,” Sanchez wrote.

According to recent reports, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ longtime rival, the San Francisco Giants, are reportedly interested in signing utility player Kiké Hernández in free agency. Hernández, known for his versatility and clutch performances in the postseason, has been a key player for the Dodgers over the past few years.

The Giants, who are looking to bolster their roster and challenge the Dodgers in the NL West, see Hernández as a valuable addition to their lineup. With his ability to play multiple positions and provide a spark off the bench, Hernández could be a valuable asset for the Giants as they look to compete in the upcoming season.

Only time will tell if the Giants are able to secure Hernández’s services, but it would certainly add an interesting dynamic to the rivalry between the two teams. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Speaking of having played together at the Cyfair Elite, the five-star class of 2025 prospect said, “I fit in really well with this program. • Blazers Could Land Massive Return From Rival For Anfernee Simons, Robert Williams III

The Portland Trail Blazers are expected to be very active ahead of the NBA trade deadline as they have a few roster pieces that could entice opposing teams. Portland has long been seen as a potential seller heading into the trade deadline but a recent win streak could change things.

But assuming that Portland does still look to move some players, they could net a nice return for themselves. The Trail Blazers could be very active and it may see them have multiple future assets added.

In this trade scenario from Ishaan Bhattacharya of Fadeaway World, the Trail Blakers make a massive change and move a few key pieces to the Los Angeles Lakers. This deal sees Anfernee Simons, Robert Williams III, and Toumani Camara move to Los Angeles.

Here is what the deal could look like:

Los Angeles Lakers Receive: Anfernee Simons ($25.8 million), Robert Williams III ($12.4 million), Toumani Camara ($1.8 million)

Portland Trail Blazers Receive: Rui Hachimura ($17.0 million), Gabe Vincent ($11.0 million), Jarred Vanderbilt ($10.7 million), Jalen Hood-Schifino ($3.8 million), 2031 First-Round Pick (LAL)

“The Blazers have younger guards to prioritize instead of Simons, who’s rearing to play for a competitive basketball team again. Parting with him and Robert Williams to get one of the most valuable future picks in the NBA – Lakers’ 2031 pick – will be a phenomenal move. Meanwhile, the Lakers become a far better roster than they do right now.”

This deal would see Portland move multiple players but the return could be worth it. They would get Hachimura to give them a legitimate wing option who can score well while on the floor.

Vincent would be a nice veteran option to have and the team could look to flip him down the line. Vanderbilt can be a monster on defense when healthy and Portland could use him in a multitude of ways.

But the real kicker here would be the 2031 first-round pick. This is one of the more highly-coveted picks around the league and the Trail Blazers would net it from Los Angeles.

Portland could get a nice pick for the start of the new decade from the Lakers, giving them a possible goldmine down the line. This deal could drastically change the way that Portland operates and could help the franchise tremendously.

The Portland Trail Blazers have been rumored to be considering trading away young guard Anfernee Simons and Boston Celtics center Robert Williams III in exchange for a massive return from a rival team. With both players showing promise and potential, the Blazers could be looking to capitalize on their value and acquire key pieces to strengthen their roster.

Simons, who has shown flashes of scoring ability and playmaking skills, could be a valuable asset for a team in need of backcourt depth. Meanwhile, Williams, known for his shot-blocking and rebounding prowess, could provide a boost to a team looking to improve their frontcourt.

With the trade deadline approaching, the Blazers will have to carefully consider their options and weigh the potential return they could receive for Simons and Williams. If they can land a significant package in return, it could help bolster their chances of making a deep playoff run this season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing trade rumor.

  • Raquel Rodriguez Says This WWE Rival Brings A ‘Different Level’ To Everyone

WWE star Raquel Rodriguez has stepped into the ring with many women, but her real “rival” will likely always be her former tag team partner, Dakota Kai — who recently suffered an injury. Speaking with “The Wrestling Classic,” Rodriguez was asked to comment on her previous tag team partners, and had a lot of things to say about Kai.

“I would definitely say, for Dakota Kai, she has like — what’s the word — like unseen talent, you know?” Rodriquez explained. “I think, like, she brings such a different level to every match she’s in, and it’s always like — her with Lyra this past Monday, oh my gosh! Mind-blowing!” Rodriguez further suggested that people seem to often forget how “amazingly good” Kai is in the ring, and added that she has equity behind her as well as raw talent. “I love that about her, she’s so easy to work with, so kind … one of the best tag team partners that I could have been put with.”

When it came to former WWE talent Aliyah, Rodriquez described her as a little package of fun and dynamite. “She just brings, like, explosions with everything she does and she’s so expressive, and entertaining, and exciting, and I absolutely love her,” she explained. Lastly, Rodriquez also praised Liv Morgan, and claimed the former Women’s World Champion has inspired her in many ways. “She’s so talented, she’s so dedicated to her craft, she absolutely loves and dedicates her entire life to wrestling.” Rodriquez lastly described Morgan as the  face of the WWE women’s division.

  • Dodgers Predicted to Trade $4.5M Reliever to Rival Astros in Blockbuster Move

The Los Angeles Dodgers have not stopped adding talent this offseason, but that comes with a few champagne problems. While there is no shortage of stars on the roster, the Dodgers don’t have enough room for all the new additions.

The Dodgers need to clear a spot for incoming reliever Kirby Yates, signifying a trade could be imminent.

More news: Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani Brought Secret Weapon to Meeting With Roki Sasaki

One potential trade candidate is Ryan Brasier, who was reportedly already being shopped by the Dodgers a few weeks ago. Brasier is owed $4.5 million this season and enters his final year of team control.

Brasier, 37, joined the Dodgers in the middle of the 2023 season. He dealt with multiple injuries last season, appearing in just 29 games, but produced a 3.54 ERA in 2024.

Brasier would be a valuable asset to any team’s bullpen. Newsweek Sports’ Drew VonScio predicts the Dodgers reliever will end up with a hated rival in the Houston Astros.

The trade would send Brasier to Houston in exchange for right-hander Miguel Ullola, who was the Astros’ No. 8 prospect in 2024, and cash considerations.

More news: Former Dodgers Reliever Signs $7.75 Million Deal With AL Contender

Ullola posted a 4.24 ERA in 27 appearances for Double-A Corpus Christi in 2024. He also made one appearance in Triple-A, where he could very well begin the season pending a strong performance in spring training.

“Brasier would immediately slot in toward the back end of the bullpen along with Josh Hader and Bryan Abreu,” Vonscio wrote. “If the Astros do trade for Brasier, it would make sense for them to try and extend him while he is under team control before he enters free agency in 2026. Otherwise, they will be in this same spot this time next year.”

VonScio also mentions an interesting statistic from Brasier, making the case of why the veteran is such a strong back end arm in the bullpen.

“Posting a 5:1 K/BB ratio is among the best of the best for relievers,” VonScio wrote. “While unqualified due to a lack of innings, Baseball Savant shows his low walk rate is among the highest in baseball.”

More news: Dodgers Sign Standout Reliever to $2.25 Million Deal

The Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly in talks to trade $4.5 million reliever to their rival Houston Astros in a blockbuster move that could shake up the landscape of the MLB. According to sources close to the situation, the Dodgers are looking to strengthen their bullpen while also potentially weakening a key competitor in the American League.

This potential trade has sent shockwaves through the baseball world, as both teams are considered frontrunners in their respective divisions. The Dodgers are currently sitting atop the NL West, while the Astros are leading the AL West. A trade of this magnitude could have far-reaching implications for both teams as they gear up for a deep playoff run.

While details of the trade are still being finalized, it is clear that both teams are looking to make a significant move to bolster their chances of success in the postseason. Stay tuned for more updates as this trade continues to develop.

  • Paramount Board’s Special Committee Says It Is “Bound” By Merger Pact With Skydance; “There Will Not Be Any Engagement” With Rival Bidders

A special committee of Paramount Global’s board of directors says it is “bound” by a pending agreement to merge with Skydance Media and will not consider an 11th-hour offer from a rival bidder.

In a statement provided to Deadline, a spokesperson for the committee formed last year to evaluate opportunities and steer a merger, said investment group Project Rise Partners effectively arrived too late to the party.

“The transaction agreement between Paramount and Skydance Media enabled the Special Committee to pursue a superior proposal during the now-expired 45-day go-shop period, during which representatives of the Special Committee contacted more than 50 third parties to determine whether they had an interest in making a proposal to acquire Paramount,” the statement said. “Project Rise Partners did not make a proposal during such period, nor during the prior seven-month sale process for Paramount. It is unclear what PRP’s objectives are; however, Paramount is bound by its agreement with Skydance Media and there will not be any engagement with PRP in contravention of such agreement.”

The Paramount-Skydance deal was set last July after a months-long saga, with numerous parties looking into throwing their hat into the ring for the century-old Hollywood mainstay. Barry Diller, Sony Pictures Entertainment, private equity giant Apollo and a group of investors led by Seagram heir Edgar Bronfman Jr. were among the suitors. Skydance was able to leverage its longstanding ties with Paramount as a co-finance partner. CEO David Ellison, backed by his father, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, was also seen as having significant resources and passion to invest in the company’s core film, TV and streaming businesses.

After multiple offers from Skydance, the company and Paramount agreed on a two-step transaction worth about $8 billion. The dual-class structure of Paramount stock made the fine points of the deal tricky to nail down, with a number of stakeholders accusing controlling shareholder Shari Redstone of furthering her own interests at the expense of holders of Class B shares. A number of notable Class B shareholders voiced their disapproval of earlier versions of the deal, though the complaints diminished as Skydance sweetened its offer.

Lawyers for Project Rise Partners sent the committee a letter on Friday advising them that the body was obligated to consider its offer, which principals described as superior to the $8 billion Skydance deal. PRP’s offer was “increasing,” the letter said, to $19 per Class B share, compared with the $15 offered by Skydance, according to a report by Variety. (Axios last October had also reported on PRP agitating for consideration of its post-deadline bid.)

Curiously, the Friday letter also drew a contrast with Skydance in terms of staffing. It asserted that PRP (whose backers include Daphna Edwards Ziman, co-chairman of TV network Cinémoi, and real estate finance exec Moses Gross) would add to Paramount’s headcount despite the widespread cutbacks reshaping the entertainment business. (Paramount itself shed 15% of U.S.-based workers in recent months.)

Despite plans to invest significant resources from the Ellisons and minority partner RedBird Capital in bulking up Paramount’s streaming platforms and studio operations, job cuts are expected at Paramount once Skydance assumes control. Among other things, the company faces significant challenges in managing its sizable linear TV assets, and last year signaled as much to Wall Street when it took a $6 billion write down on the value of its cable networks.

When the Skydance bid was first accepted by the special committee last summer, the agreement stipulated that a 45-day “go-shop” window would enable the board to explore alternatives. As an SEC filing affirmed this month, representatives of Project Rise Partners were in contact with the special committee but their proposal did not get submitted until several days after the go-shop period expired.

The idea of a last-minute twist to the Paramount merger melodrama is migraine-inducing to some observers. “It’s just silliness,” one person familiar with the merger process said of the PRP saber-rattling. The entreaties by the investor group come as the deal is falling under fresh scrutiny from regulators at the Federal Communications Commission, which has taken issue with political coverage by Paramount’s CBS News.

FCC Chair Brendan Carr, appointed to the post by President Trump, has revived complaints of “news distortion” by CBS due to its editing of a 60 Minutes interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump also has filed a lawsuit in Texas over the Harris segment, prompting internal discussion at Paramount about ways to settle the suit in order to allow the merger to proceed to a close. Trump’s objections are creating these potential roadblocks despite the fact that Redstone and Ellison are both longtime supporters of the president, with the latter appearing last week at a White House news conference about a major new AI initiative.

Reps for Redstone, Paramount Global and Skydance declined to comment when contacted by Deadline.

In a recent announcement, the special committee of the Paramount board has made it clear that they are “bound” by the merger pact with Skydance and will not be engaging with any rival bidders. This decision comes after much speculation and interest from other potential buyers.

The committee emphasized that they have a fiduciary duty to uphold the terms of the agreement with Skydance and will not be swayed by any competing offers. This stance solidifies their commitment to the current merger and sends a clear message to other parties that their efforts will not be entertained.

While this news may disappoint some who were hoping for a bidding war, it ensures stability and continuity for Paramount’s future. The committee’s unwavering support for the Skydance merger demonstrates their confidence in the deal and their belief that it is in the best interest of the company and its shareholders.

Overall, this decision reinforces the Paramount board’s dedication to seeing the merger through to completion and sets a firm boundary against any potential distractions or interference from outside parties.

  • Brewers Vet Signing With Division Rival After 2-Year Stint In Milwaukee

One former Milwaukee Brewers starter has found a new opportunity.

Former Brewers hurler Wade Miley has been looking for a new opportunity in free agency throughout the offseason. Miley made it known that he wanted to continue his career and even hinted that he would be open to a return to Milwaukee,

While this is the case, it’s not going to happen at least, in the short term. Miley reportedly is signing a minor league deal with the National League Central rival Cincinnati Reds, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Gordon Wittenmyer.

“Veteran (left-handed pitcher) Wade Miley, a favorite of the Reds front office, has signed a minor-league deal to return to the team as he eyes a return from Tommy John surgery in mid to late May,” Wittenmyer said. “Was 12-10, 3.55 for Reds in ’20-22. Should be good for young staff.”

Miley spent the last two seasons with the Brewers but only was able to make two starts in 2024. In 2023, he shined. He logged a 3.14 ERA across 23 starts with Milwaukee. It was his second stint in the organization after spending time with the team in 2018 as well.

This will be Miley’s second stint with the Reds after spending the 2020 and 2021 campaigns with Cincinnati.

He won’t be ready to go right away as he recovers from surgery, but it wouldn’t be shocking to see him get a chance at some point with the Reds.
