What was your inspiration for creating Mayor Peter: The Story of Pete Buttigieg?

ROB SANDERS (RS): I first learned about Pete when he was running for chair of the DNC. And, of course, I followed the announcement of his presidential exploratory committee, watched his appearances on late night talk shows and news channels, and read his autobiography. All the while I was thinking, This is a story that needs to be told. No sooner had I finished reading Pete’s book than Christian Trimmer from Henry Holt Books for Young Readers approached my agent asking if I would be interested in writing a biography about Pete. So, just as I was finding inspiration, opportunity found me.

LEVI HASTINGS (LH): I was inspired to take this on as a way to show children from all backgrounds that politics and community service are accessible to everyone. As someone who grew up gay in a small conservative town, a book like this would have meant a lot to me as a child.

Do you have a favorite image or spread from the book and why?

RS: I have two favorites. The first is when Chasten and Pete appear together with a tiny heart between them. My second favorite image is the wedding kiss between the two men. Showing this relationship openly and honestly in a picture book can give kid readers a deeper understanding of others.

LV: I think my favorite illustration is of Pete’s re-election victory after coming out publicly.

What do you hope readers take away from this story?

RS: A recurring line in the book riffs off of Only time would tell who Pete Buttigieg would become. That’s the takeaway for readers. Pete’s life story so far shows us that we are not limited by where we grow up, what career we choose, or who we love.

LV: I hope readers are inspired to get involved in their community and not feel limited by their orientation, gender, skin color or social status.

Born in South Bend, Indiana in 1982, Buttigieg grew up in a family of academics and politicians. He implemented innovative solutions to longstanding problems, such as the Smart Streets initiative to redesign the city’s downtown area. His approach to governing earned him national recognition and praise from both Democrats and Republicans.

In 2019, Buttigieg announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for president, becoming the first openly gay candidate to run for president from a major political party. His campaign has attracted a diverse coalition of supporters and raised significant amounts of money, positioning him as a serious contender in the crowded field of candidates.

As Mayor Pete continues to rise in the polls and gain momentum, many are wondering if he will be able to make history once again by becoming the first openly gay president of the United States.
