  • The 10 Best Life Hacks I’ve Learned From Mel Robbins

While we’ve been longtime Mel Robbins fans, the new year and resolution season brought about even more buzz for the motivational speaker as her interviews on popular podcasts like On Purpose With Jay Shetty and Life With Marianna went viral. And the praise is well-deserved. As a long-time fan and listener of The Mel Robbins Podcast, she’s completely changed my view on relationships (with myself and others), given me the best productivity hacks I’ve ever heard, and rewired the way I process emotions. In my opinion, she’s truly one of the most effective motivational teachers out there. As a former lawyer, TEDx speaker, and author of three New York Times bestselling books, Robbins has doled out a lot of life hacks over the years, but I’m breaking down the 10 best life hacks I’ve learned from her and why her psychology-backed advice actually works.

    1. Drop the sword

As someone who has always been a visual learner, I particularly love this metaphor Robbins uses to show how we block ourselves from our own happiness. In an episode of her podcast, she asks her listeners to visualize what you look like when you’re holding a sword. You’re on edge, tight-grip, tense, ready for battle. But when you visualize yourself dropping the sword, your energy shifts and your mindset changes. Until I heard this, I was not aware of how much I was blocking my own happiness because we block it with our energy, our attitude, and even the stories we tell ourselves. Robbins advises that for just 24 hours, notice in situations if you’re holding a sword and are bracing for what’s about to happen, and when you notice that, just “drop the sword.”

    2. Embrace jealousy; it’s telling you what you need in your life

In her book, The High Five Habit, Mel advises her readers to not shy away from jealousy and to instead think of it as a signal that’s trying to get your attention. Notice who you’re jealous of—don’t try to hide it or let it shame you, and instead turn toward it because it’s the fastest way to figure out what you want. She says that you should look at the people in your life and ask yourself the question, who are you jealous of? Maybe it’s their positive energy and ambition, maybe it’s their TikTok following, their tight-knit group of friends, or how they take care of their health. Whatever it may be, flip the belief of “If someone else has it, I can’t” into “Their success is just proof that I can have it, too.”

    3. “Let them,” and “let me”

Like a lot of people, I struggle with control in my life. I’m a chronic Type A, organized person who does not do well amid chaos, and this viral theory allowed me to let go of that need to be in control. The Let Them Theory is a “very simple mindset tool that shows you what’s in your control and what’s not in your control,” Robbins shared on the Life with Marianna podcast. She added that “the next time you find yourself either upset or pissed off or annoyed by what somebody else is doing, you’re just going to say to yourself, let them,” and in return, you will find that you feel a greater sense of power and peace and release.

But the important step two that people often miss is saying, “Let me,” which then lets you choose how you respond to the person or situation that is frustrating you. We spend a lot of time and energy worrying about what people are saying about us or trying to manage others, but you can’t change someone, and you can’t control someone’s actions. The Let Them Theory allows you to release that time spent trying to control someone or resentment that builds with the frustration that you can’t, with just two simple words.

    4. Forget about balance; focus on boundaries

Of course, we all strive for balance in our lives, but in an episode of her podcast, Robbins shared an important lesson she learned was that there’s no such thing as balance; focus on boundaries. She explained that when you strive for balance, you actually put every area of your life in competition with each other, which can create resentment. Instead of focusing on balance, focus on boundaries. Boundaries require you to be self-aware and responsible about what you value, and by communicating them with other people, they can let you feel like you have more balance. One example she shared was her goal to be more present with her family, so she made a rule that her phone would not be on her body while she was with them, therefore creating more balance in the friends and family sector of her life.

    5. The five-second rule

Let’s face it: There are a lot of things we don’t enjoy doing but have to because we know they’re good for us. For me, one of those things is waking up in the morning. I have a bad habit of snoozing my alarm or scrolling through social media before actually getting out of bed, but the five-second rule has helped me break this habit. Robbin’s book The Five Second Rule explains that if we want to do something and pause to think about it, we sit in hesitation and lose all motivation to actually fulfill that goal. The five-second rule removes those barriers. Simply count backward from 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, GO! Don’t think, just do. This rule can be applied to many areas of your life, whether you want to work out more or eat healthier. Put on your workout clothes each morning you wake up or delete the take-out apps from your phone. The time spent weighing your decisions can stall you from making them.

    6. Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right

This life hack is simple yet very effective. The mind can be a very powerful tool, especially when you use it to your advantage. If you think you can’t do something, you won’t put in the work, but if you think you can do something, you will open the door to optimism and hope; you will have a reason to try and feel more resilient. Robbins has taken this piece of advice from her grandmother and advises you to say it to yourself over and over again, whether you want a new job or want to run a marathon. When you try, that’s what matters—it’s all in the trying that you create the results. Just start telling yourself you can do whatever it is you want, and see the difference it makes.

    7. Frustration is a very good thing

As you may have noticed by now, a lot of Robbin’s life hacks involve paying attention to our emotions and looking for a deeper meaning within them. This goes for frustration as well. Mel shared in an episode of her podcast that when we feel frustrated, it’s a sign that we are outgrowing a situation. It doesn’t mean things are terrible; it just means that you are growing, whether that be your friendships, job, home life, or money. It’s important to look at the five areas of your life and assess where and why you might be frustrated about a situation. Don’t aim that frustration at yourself or others. Instead, think of the emotion as a sign that maybe it’s time to start job hunting, find some new friends, relocate, or start a savings account. You have the power to take action and make a change when something isn’t working in any area of your life.

    8. The high-five habit

Hear me out, because this one is going to feel cheesy at first. When you wake up each morning, look at yourself in the mirror and give yourself a high five. Robbins shares in her book The High Five Habit that it doesn’t matter if your hair is all ratty, your teeth unbrushed, or you’re standing in your underwear—it is impossible to worry about your to-do list or work emails when you are giving someone a high-five. This small, seemingly cheesy habit can make you feel seen, heard, and appreciated, and the research backs it up. One study showed that school-aged kids split into groups given three forms of encouragement (praise for a trait, praise for effort, and a high-five) and found that the high-fives won. Affirmations are great forms of encouragement, but they won’t be effective if you don’t believe the affirmation you are saying to yourself. Plus, we all need a little more cheese in our lives, so why not try it?

    9. The 5, 10, 20 Rule

You’ve probably heard people talking about the importance of getting sunlight first thing in the morning. Robbins also recommends starting your day outside because sunlight resets your circadian rhythm and allows you to sleep better at night. But like most of Robbin’s life hacks, she goes one step further. What most podcasts and self-help videos don’t delve into is how long you’re supposed to spend outside. What if it’s cloudy? What if it’s raining? The answer is the 5, 10, 20 rule. If it’s sunny outside, spend at least five minutes. If it’s cloudy, spend 10 minutes, and if it’s cloudy and raining, spend 20. With this rule, the more time you bank, the more effective it will be.

    10. If you want to get eight hours of sleep, spend nine in bed

This rule seems so logical if you think about it because how many of us actually fall asleep the moment our head hits the pillow? Yet I’ve never before counted the amount of time it takes to fall asleep when I set my alarm in the morning. I look at my phone and set my alarm based on the time I turn off the lights. While I think I’m getting eight hours of sleep, I’m probably only getting seven. This rule comes from an expert Robbins interviewed for her podcast, sleep expert Dr. Rebecca Robins. Robbin’s sleep rule is to give yourself an extra hour. If your goal is eight hours, give yourself nine hours in bed. That way, you don’t lose out on the time it takes to turn off the lights, set your alarm, and actually allow your body to relax into sleep.

Mel Robbins is a renowned motivational speaker and author known for her practical life advice and tips for productivity. Here are the top 10 life hacks I’ve learned from her:

    1. The 5 Second Rule: Count down from 5 to 1 and take action. This simple technique can help you overcome procrastination and make decisions more quickly.

    2. Start your day with a positive mindset: Instead of reaching for your phone first thing in the morning, take a few minutes to practice gratitude and set intentions for the day.

    3. Practice the 90/10 rule: Spend 90% of your time focusing on solutions and only 10% on the problem. This shift in mindset can help you stay positive and productive.

    4. Use the Pomodoro Technique: Work in 25-minute intervals with 5-minute breaks in between. This can help you stay focused and avoid burnout.

    5. Create a vision board: Visualizing your goals can help you stay motivated and focused on what you want to achieve.

    6. Practice self-care: Make time for activities that recharge you, whether it’s exercise, meditation, or spending time with loved ones.

    7. Set boundaries: Learn to say no to things that don’t align with your priorities and values. This can help you avoid burnout and focus on what truly matters.

    8. Practice mindfulness: Take time to be present and fully engage in the moment. This can help reduce stress and improve your overall well-being.

    9. Keep a journal: Writing down your thoughts and feelings can help you process emotions and gain clarity on your goals.

    10. Surround yourself with positive people: Surrounding yourself with supportive and uplifting individuals can help you stay motivated and inspired.

By incorporating these life hacks into your daily routine, you can improve your productivity, mindset, and overall well-being. Thank you, Mel Robbins, for sharing these valuable tips!

  • Mel Robbins says two words freed her from taking care of everyone else

Sign up for CNN’s Stress, But Less newsletter. Our six-part mindfulness guide will inform and inspire you to reduce stress while learning how to harness it.

    CNN
     —

Do you get paralyzed by anxiety or overwhelmed by negative thoughts or depression? Here’s how to get out of your head and rocket yourself out of bed at the same time.

I know it sounds ridiculously easy, but just stay with me. It’s a simple trick I learned from a world-renowned motivational speaker and best-selling author who used it to lift herself out of a seemingly hopeless situation. She has been through some tough times.

Here it is: Count backward from five. Just try it wherever you are: five, four, three, two, one. Now get up and get moving.

That’s it. It’s not rocket science, but it is based on neuroscience. Stress is a natural physiological reaction that helps you step up to everyday challenges or perceived threats. But when the body’s fight-or-flight survival response doesn’t let up, temporary changes such as muscle tension, shallow breathing, rapid heartbeat and edginess can give way to headaches, trouble sleeping, irritability, and the debilitating paralysis symptomatic of chronic anxiety or depression.

To stop this crippling cycle, the five-second countdown is the advice Mel Robbins gave herself while facing the worst time in her adult life. She later shared the trick in her hugely popular book “The 5 Second Rule: Transform Your Life, Work, and Confidence With Everyday Courage.”

Robbins, one of the top podcasters in the world, said she discovered the life-changing tactic when she was hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt from a restaurant business she and her husband had launched. They had used just about all their money, including equity in their house, to build the business — and then the 2008 financial crisis hit, wiping them out.

She was paralyzed, failing to get out of bed for hours, unwilling to do anything about it, and giving up on herself every single day. And then one day, she had a thought that she said changed her life forever: Her mind drifted to the countdown NASA does before launching a rocket.

Instead of launching a rocket, she wondered what would happen if she launched herself out of bed and into the world, even if it was just for a walk. That one simple trick allowed her to start tackling the things that were crippling her, one by one.

“I started using this countdown technique — five, four, three, two, one — anytime I needed to do something that I didn’t feel like doing,” Robbins told me. “And it became a way for me to push myself through the feelings of doubt, despair, frustration, overwhelm, anxiety, procrastination, whatever the heck it was. Five, four, three, two, one, boom. I would just move.

“See, your brain is designed to learn patterns. And the thing about patterns is this: You actually don’t break them,” Robbins said. “Patterns are designed to repeat. So, the only way you actually change patterns is by understanding the patterns that you don’t want to repeat anymore and then replacing them with something else.”

“‘Five, four, three, two, one, go’ becomes the new pattern, replacing old patterns that didn’t get me anywhere,” she said. “I’ve tried it. It has worked for me on some of my most paralyzing mornings.”

Mel Robbins' latest strategy for relieving frustration over things out of her control is to utter two simple words,

It turns out there is scientific evidence Robbins points to that backs up the effectiveness of this technique. When anxious or negative thoughts start to spiral in your head, you can stop them in their tracks by paying attention to your body and where you’re holding tension or pain, physician and neuroscientist Dr. Russell Kennedy explained during an April 2023 episode of “The Mel Robbins Podcast.”

As soon as you sense your trigger, start counting down without hesitation to shut down the stress response, which is activated by your sympathetic nervous system. “You develop this awareness. OK, this is my alarm coming up,” Kennedy said.

“Do something to break that cycle, because if you don’t break that cycle you’re going to sit there and ruminate and ruminate and ruminate,” he said. “And rumination has tremendous inertia to it. Once you start getting into negative thoughts, you don’t feel like doing anything.”

After the countdown, get moving and take action so you can shift your focus, reset and transition your body into a healing state of calm, activated by the parasympathetic nervous system, Kennedy said.

Robbins has touched a nerve with her latest technique, which is another simple phrase. The trick that she said finally allowed her to live her best life at 54 years old was inspired by two simple words uttered by her twentysomething daughter: “Let them.”

“I was the person that was pissed off in the grocery store, stressed out gripping the steering wheel, annoyed by inconsiderate behavior, bending over backwards because people made me feel guilty,” Robbins said, “trying to make other people happy, trying to change other people, controlling other people because I thought it would make me feel more in control. That’s when I stumbled onto these two words: Let them.”

Her daughter had said those two words to her several times when Robbins was trying to control some of the plans for her son’s prom night. Plans he repeatedly resisted, leaving Robbins a bit hurt and extremely frustrated.

“The ‘let them’ theory is really about power and control,” Robbins said. “You use it anytime you feel frustrated, stressed out, annoyed, bothered, lonely, worried about somebody else or something else. You just say, ‘Let them!’”

It’s easy to apply to life. What can you do about people who make negative comments about you and hurt your feelings or talk behind your back? Let them. Your friend never picks up the phone when you call. Let them. Your spouse does nothing but complain they feel out of shape but won’t change their behavior even though you have offered to help.

    Let them.

Your boss says they are still “working” on getting you that promotion: Let them. Your parents won’t go to the doctor but keep complaining about little pains they are feeling.

    Let them.

“Let them” doesn’t mean you are giving up on them. It simply allows you to do something else.

“When you say ‘let them,’ a number of things are happening and they’re really important. No. 1, you’re actually seeing and accepting a person exactly as they are. Maybe for the very first time,” Robbins said. “Second, you are recognizing that this situation and this person’s behavior right now is completely outside of my control. This is time and energy that I can use in a more effective way based on 50 years of research and science in human behavior and influence.”

You can’t change people — any psychologist will tell you that. But you can influence them in a way that does not stress you out, Robbins said. Which brings us to the second part of the equation. “Let them” must be followed by “let me.”

Here’s one of the formulas Robbins recommends that has worked for her. It’s as easy to remember as “ABC.”

A is for apologize: You can say something like, “I am really sorry I never took into consideration how my nagging about this may be affecting you.” Then without judgment ask open-ended questions. Genuinely try to understand. Some examples include: How have my comments or pushing made you feel? What do you think about the condition of your health, grades, finances and so on? What do you think would help you change them? Do you think they need to change?

B is for back off: For three to six months, do not mention the issue that you have been harping on or worrying about. “Literally let them do whatever they want to do in that three-to-six-month period of time. And let me remind myself, I’m not stepping across the line here. And the reason why I say this is, it needs to take three to six months, is because it has to be their idea,” Robbins said.

C is for compliment: When you see them making an effort, no matter how small, give a compliment, such as “I’m proud of you.” Also model the behavior you want to see in your family, friends or coworkers. It seems simple, but Robbins said it works and so do behavioral scientists with whom she spoke.

It turns out the more you push someone to do something, even when it’s for their own benefit, the more they resist. This negative reaction is called psychological reactance, according to the Cleveland Clinic. You are trying to control their behavior, and they want their own control. In the end, you could make it worse if you don’t understand how our brains work. I know this because I’m guilty of it.

CNN anchor Sara Sidner admits to feeling happier and lighter after following Mel Robbins' principles while undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

I have tried the “let them, let me” technique. Not as artfully as Robbins has laid it out, but a rougher version of it. In a short time, my relationship with my mom has gotten more loving and more fun. I hadn’t realized how often I was nagging both my mom and myself. I do it because I don’t want anything bad to happen to the mother I love so much or me. Somehow, I thought I could control that. Then I got breast cancer. Something I was unable to stop happening to me.

I had the fortune to read Robbins’ book while I have been going through treatment. I realized I’d been treating myself (in my head) and my mom (out loud) like petulant teenagers who refused to obey my rules and had to pay for their disobedience with my bad moods, frustration and silence.

Now months after being in treatment and putting Robbins’ principles into practice, I feel a bit lighter and a lot happier. Life itself is more fun and less exhausting because I am not trying to control everything around me. And I can launch myself out of bed before I start nagging myself into oblivion. It is no wonder people around the world are so enthralled and inspired by Robbins’ latest book, “The Let Them Theory,” that they are tattooing the two-word message on their bodies. To that I say, “Let them.”

In a recent interview, renowned motivational speaker Mel Robbins revealed that two simple words have completely transformed her mindset and freed her from the burden of constantly taking care of everyone else. The words? “I’m fine.”

Robbins explained that for years, she had been conditioned to put others’ needs before her own, always saying yes to requests for help and never allowing herself to prioritize her own well-being. But when she started practicing the phrase “I’m fine” in response to others’ demands, she found that it gave her the power to set boundaries and take care of herself first.

By acknowledging that it’s okay to prioritize her own needs and say no when necessary, Robbins has been able to free herself from the constant pressure of trying to please everyone else. She encourages others to adopt this simple phrase as a way to reclaim their time and energy, and focus on what truly matters to them.

So next time you feel overwhelmed by the weight of taking care of everyone else, remember the power of “I’m fine” and give yourself permission to prioritize your own well-being.

  • Who is Mel Robbins? And what is her viral morning routine?

There are some sounds that just take over your TikTok FYP, and right now we, and millions of other people cannot get enough of Mel Robbins. Whether it’s her ‘Let Them’ theory, her advice for people in their 20s, or her game-changing morning routine, it’s impossible to scroll through TikTok without people making an edit to one of her easily digestible life guidance sound bites.

While Mel and her philosophy have been around for years, with the start of the new year always prompting people to reflect and set new goals, her wisdom has become even more sought out and shared.

But who actually is Mel Robbins? This is everything you need to know about TikTok’s new favourite guru.

    Who is Mel Robbins?

Mel Robbins is a former lawyer turned author, podcast host and motivational speaker.

In the late 2000s she transitioned her career into motivational speaking and spoke during a TEDx talk that has since been viewed over 33million times (one of the most watched ever) about the power of her self-help technique the ‘five second rule’.

She’s released five books, hosts her own podcast called The Mel Robbins Podcast where she speaks about her life, gives advices and interviews guests. Often the topics focus on habit formation, happiness, mental health and relationships.

Across her social media channels she has over 10million followers, which include Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Anniston and Chrissy Teigen. NBD.

So why is Mel all over my TikTok?

Noticed you’re getting a lot more life advice shared on your TikTok? Well in the last year or so Mel’s advice sound bites have been going viral on the app.

You’re likely to have heard them without even realising they’re attributed to her. Like the five second rule for example, it involves counting backwards from five to 1 and then just doing whatever it is you need to do.

Late last year following the publication of her new book Let Them, a clip of her discussing the theory was going viral. The theory itself? Well as explained by Robbins it’s about letting the people in your life do exactly what they’re going to do without trying to control them. Why? “You spend so much time and energy trying to control other people and getting emotionally working up about things that are beyond your control. You can tap into peace and true control if you let them be themselves. If you let them, people will then reveal who they truly are.”

What is Mel Robbins’ morning routine?

The latest bit of Mel guidance to take the internet by storm is her morning routine.

With the start of a new year we’re all looking for new habits to adopt and many young women on TikTok have been trialling Mel’s route to success in the morning. So what exactly is on Mel’s morning routine?

The details from Mel’s routine come from her podcast episode 253 which was released on 13th January 2025 and details the six steps Mel does everyday in the first 15 minutes immediately after waking up.

Ready to give it a go? This is Mel Robbins’ exact 15 minute morning routine:

    1. Resist the snooze button – get up straight away at your first alarm.
    2. Make your bed.
    3. Give your herself a high five in the mirror – this is one of Mel’s tried and tested techniques that sees you literally give yourself a high five in the mirror.
    4. Drink water before any caffeine – try and wait at least 60 minutes before having a coffee.
    5. Get outside and take in morning light – even if it’s a cloudy day.
    6. Move your body – whether it’s a walk (which you can combine with step 5), stretch or workout.

Ok well consider our morning routines seriously upgraded.

As we enter the new year, many of us are setting resolutions and goals to improve our lives. But often, we find ourselves held back by fear, self-doubt, and the opinions of others. In her latest book, Mel Robbins introduces a powerful tool that can help us overcome these obstacles and achieve our dreams: the “LET THEM!” mindset.

The “LET THEM!” mindset is all about letting go of the need for approval and validation from others. It’s about realizing that we don’t need anyone else’s permission to live our lives the way we want to. As Mel Robbins puts it, “If you want to change your life, change your relationship with other people’s opinions.”

By adopting the “LET THEM!” mindset, we can free ourselves from the shackles of other people’s expectations and judgments. We can stop seeking validation from others and start living authentically, on our own terms. This mindset empowers us to take risks, pursue our passions, and embrace our true selves without fear of judgment.

So as we embark on this new year, let’s embrace the “LET THEM!” mindset and give ourselves permission to be who we truly are. Let’s let go of the need for approval and validation from others, and instead focus on living our lives in a way that brings us joy and fulfillment. As Mel Robbins reminds us, “You have everything you need to change your life. You don’t need permission. You just need to give yourself permission.”

We can do hard things, and with the “LET THEM!” mindset, we can achieve anything we set our minds to. Let’s make this new year a transformative one by letting go of other people’s opinions and embracing our own power and potential.

Mel Robbins and Pilar Guzmán on the Simple Mindset Shift that Eases Anxiety

It’s no secret that Mel Robbins—the author and podcast host—is having a moment. Not only is The Mel Robbins Podcast ridiculously popular, she has a buzzy new book The Let Them Theory and she recently joined Oprah for her new podcast to talk about how to stop wasting your precious time and energy on things that are out of your control. A few days after that conversation aired, Robbins and Oprah Daily’s editorial director, Pilar Guzmán, kept the conversation going by diving even deeper into this potentially life-changing philosophy.

In her book, Robbins explores a simple but powerful concept: There is a specific type of peace that comes with relinquishing control. By letting go of the need to dictate outcomes we don’t actually have any power over—whether it’s a disappointed parent or a long line at the grocery store—we can reduce stress and disappointment. This philosophy, Robbins explains, can truly change your life: “I get to choose whether I create space for change and space for acceptance.”

In a recent conversation, renowned motivational speaker Mel Robbins and wellness expert Pilar Guzmán shared a powerful mindset shift that can help ease anxiety and bring a sense of calm to our lives.

According to Robbins, one of the key strategies to combat anxiety is to shift our focus from the future to the present moment. She emphasized the importance of staying grounded in the here and now, rather than getting caught up in worrying about what may or may not happen in the future.

Guzmán echoed this sentiment, highlighting the power of mindfulness and being fully present in each moment. She emphasized the importance of practicing gratitude and focusing on the things we can control, rather than dwelling on the uncertainties of the future.

Both Robbins and Guzmán agreed that by shifting our mindset to focus on the present moment, we can reduce anxiety and find a greater sense of peace and contentment in our lives.

So the next time you find yourself feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, try adopting this simple mindset shift and see how it can help bring a sense of calm and clarity to your mind.

In this post, we will explore the insights shared by Mel Robbins and Pilar Guzmán on a simple mindset shift that can help ease anxiety. Both Robbins, a best-selling author and motivational speaker, and Guzmán, a wellness expert and founder of the consulting firm Ellevate Health, emphasize the power of shifting our perspective to better manage feelings of anxiety.

Robbins suggests that instead of resisting or fighting against anxiety, we should embrace it as a natural part of being human. She believes that anxiety is a signal that our bodies are trying to protect us, and by acknowledging and accepting it, we can begin to understand and address the underlying causes.

Guzmán adds that practicing mindfulness and staying present in the moment can also help alleviate anxiety. By focusing on the here and now, rather than worrying about the future or dwelling on the past, we can reduce feelings of overwhelm and stress.

Together, Robbins and Guzmán highlight the importance of reframing our relationship with anxiety and adopting a more compassionate and accepting attitude towards ourselves. By making this simple mindset shift, we can create a sense of calm and peace within ourselves, even in the face of uncertainty and challenges.

So, the next time you feel anxious, remember to embrace it, practice mindfulness, and shift your perspective to ease your worries. Your mental health and well-being will thank you for it.
