  • Rihanna attends the trial of her partner, rapper A$AP Rocky, who is accused in a 2021 shooting

LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a stretch of questioning crucial to the defense of A$AP Rocky, his lawyer on Friday challenged the account of his accuser, who said he suffered a hand injury when the hip-hop performer fired a gun at him in 2021.

Superstar singer Rihanna, Rocky’s partner and the mother of their two children, watched from the audience as the man who goes by A$AP Relli, a former friend of Rocky, underwent a second day of cross-examination that left him visibly frustrated and at times angry. Rihanna slipped into court for a third day about 30 minutes into the testimony and sat next to Rocky’s mother.

Relli had testified under prosecution questioning that his hand felt hot when Rocky fired at him on a Hollywood street and his hand was grazed. A photo was shown of scrapes that had torn the skin on his knuckles.

He did not seek medical attention until two days later in New York.

“You waited to fly all the way across country before seeking medical attention?” defense attorney Joe Tacopina asked.

“I had my hand wrapped that night,” Relli said, then acknowledged he had.

He said that after the incident, “I didn’t trust LA. I didn’t trust nobody.”

Through their opening statement and the cross-examination, Rocky’s attorneys have suggested Relli only sought medical attention because the lawyer in a separate civil case where he’s seeking money from the rapper, and a police detective, told him he should.

Tacopina also challenged him about the short time he spent at the hospital.

“That’s one hour and 36 minutes for a gunshot, yeah?” the lawyer said.

“It was two days later,” Relli replied.

Anticipating the defense tactic, the prosecution told jurors during their opening statement that for the charges in the case — two counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm — it doesn’t matter whether Relli was injured.

Guilty verdicts on both counts could lead to a maximum of 24 years in prison for Rocky.

That verdict could be a major turning point in the life of the rapper, who this weekend is nominated for his third Grammy Award at a ceremony at Crypto.com Arena just two miles from the trial.

Rocky’s attorneys are arguing, in a revelation made just before the trial began, that the gun he fired was a starter pistol that carried only blanks that he had just as a prop for security. They allege Relli knew this.

Relli testified under prosecution questioning that he had not known Rocky to carry a gun.

When Tacopina returned to the question, Relli hedged.

“I don’t really chill with him every day, I don’t know,” he said. “From the time I chill with him, I don’t know him carrying guns.”

Tacopina continued, “Well one thing you know, is for sure he doesn’t carry a prop gun.”

“Who carries a prop gun?” Relli answered. “Who’s going to come to a situation and carry a prop gun?”

After the jury was dismissed for lunch, a vicious argument broke out between Tacopina and Deputy District Attorney John Lewin over a racy photo of Relli’s girlfriend that he showed Relli to identify her.

Lewin argued it was an attempt to inflame the witness, and that the defense’s entire case failed to address the actual incident, including “this prop gun garbage!”

“Oh?! Oh!?” Tacopina shouted back. “We’ll see what the jury says at the end!”

Tacopina then called Relli a perjurer, and said that the prosecutors were abetting him.

As it got even louder and more personal, the judge, who seemed disgusted, walked out.

He had previously instructed the men, who have butted heads often, only to talk to each other on the record. In this case they were, though the cameras had been turned off.

Rocky and Rihanna, both 36, have two sons together: 2-year-old RZA Athelston Mayers and 1-year-old Riot Rose Mayers.

  • Rihanna appears again at A$AP Rocky’s gun assault trial as ex-friend testifies | A$AP Rocky

The most important testimony at the trial of the rapper A$AP Rocky got second billing for a second day as superstar Rihanna sat quietly in the audience.

Rihanna, A$AP Rocky’s partner, appeared at his Los Angeles trial again on Thursday, sitting between his sister and mother.

Rocky, whose legal name is Rakim Athelston Mayers, is facing trial on two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, accused by a former friend, A$AP Relli, of firing a gun at him in 2021.

A$AP Relli, who was born Terell Ephron, faced a fierce cross-examination on Thursday, bristling under questioning from Rocky’s lawyer and at one point shouting at the defendant. The judge briefly called a recess so the prosecution and Relli’s lawyer could instruct him how to respond properly in court.

Before that could happen, Relli shouted, “You did this to yourself!” to Rocky, prompting an admonishment from the judge.

“Do not talk to the defendant!” the judge, Mark Arnold, shouted at him.

Relli grew frustrated by the questions asked by Rocky’s attorney. The defense showed screenshots of Relli’s Instagram posts in an attempt to contradict his earlier testimony that he had a positive relationship with Rocky before the shooting, but that he’d been so shunned for coming forward that his business was ruined and that he had no social media presence.

Relli is suing Rocky’s defense attorney Joe Tacopina for libel in civil court for his public statements, and suing Rocky over the incident. The defense has sought to highlight the lawsuits in order to cast him as someone seeking money from a false story and has said his account of what happened has changed over time.

Relli argued that although details of his story may have shifted over the past three years, his fading memory doesn’t change what fundamentally happened.

“A gun was pulled on me. It was pointed at me, and it was fired later,” Relli said on Thursday.

In testimony in previous days, Relli has described the night in November 2021 when he and Rocky, their relationship straining, had a confrontation and scuffled on a Hollywood street, and Rocky pointed a gun at him before walking away.

Relli testified that he was shouting at Rocky as he walked after him, then Rocky pulled the gun again and held it in the air.

“He turned around and then it was like BOOM!” Relli told the jury. “The whole thing was like a movie, he kind of like pointed down and he shot the first shot.”

He said he felt a burning on his hand where a bullet grazed it.

Relli testified Rocky fired another shot that he didn’t see because he had hidden behind a mutual friend.

He said, “I felt my hand hot,” and later added: “I was hit. Or I was grazed. I didn’t have a hole or nothing.”

Rocky’s lawyer says the shots he fired were not even from a real gun – they were blanks from a starter pistol that he carried as a prop. The lawyer said Relli knew this, and that was why he was so fearless walking after him.

“Oh it was a real gun,” Relli testified under prosecution questioning, saying he knew because of his scraped hand.

Since the shooting and his decision to go to police and testify, he said he had received death threats, been shunned as a snitch and saw the modest music management career he built fall apart.

“It’s been a living hell,” Relli said.

About an hour after the shooting, Relli returned to the scene and said he photographed and recovered two shell casings. Earlier, while responding to a report of a shooting, police did not find any.

He sent a text to Rocky that was shown in court saying: “U try killing me.”

Rocky denied it in his reply: “Bro wtf is u talkin bout why u tell ppl I shot at u.”

He sent Rocky photos of the shell casings and his grazed hand.

Rocky said he was making stuff up and speaking “all type of nonsense” and was trying to “extort” him.

The judge in the case ruled on Thursday morning that Relli’s social media posts capturing what seems like a luxury lifestyle after the incident would be fair game for questioning.

Pop sensation Rihanna made another appearance at A$AP Rocky’s ongoing gun assault trial, as a former friend of the rapper took the stand to testify against him. The ex-friend, who has not been named, alleged that A$AP Rocky had threatened him with a gun during a heated altercation last year.

  • Rihanna Makes Rare Court Appearance to Support A$AP Rocky amid Gun Trial

Rihanna is showing support for her partner, A$AP Rocky, amid his trial in Los Angeles.

On Wednesday, Jan. 29, the singer-songwriter was present for the rapper’s ongoing trial, in which he’s accused of firing a semi-automatic handgun at his former friend A$AP Relli during an altercation in November 2021.

Dressed in all black, Rihanna, 36, sat in the gallery at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in downtown Los Angeles, between Rocky’s mother Renee Black and his sister Erika B. Mayers.

This is the first time that Rihanna has expressed public support for Rocky (whose real name is Rakim Mayers) since the legal case began.

Her court appearances comes just hours after she and Rocky, also 36, stepped out for a date night in Los Angeles.

On Jan. 21, Rocky turned down a plea deal from prosecutors and opted for a jury trial instead of pleading guilty to one of two felony charges of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. He faces up to 24 years in prison if found guilty.

The plea deal included serving 180 days in jail and receiving a seven-year suspended sentence with three years on probation.

During opening statements, Rocky’s lawyer Joe Tacopina claimed that the rapper, 36, was carrying a “prop gun” for the purpose of scaring off potential threats. Tacopina also claimed that Rocky is licensed to carry a firearm in California.

“For Relli, it was never about justice… it’s about a man seeking a profit from a fabricated narrative,” Tacopina said. “Rocky has nothing to hide here.”

Meanwhile, the prosecution team began opening statements by recounting the events leading up to the altercation. He also claimed that Relli showed up the night of the altercation thinking they would just “argue” and this would “repair their relationship.”

“This is not a complicated case,” Deputy District Attorney Paul B. Przelomiec said in his opening statement. “The defense will turn in an alternative explanation to what happened that night… we ask that you do not leave your common sense at the door.”

Relli filed a civil lawsuit for assault, battery and emotional distress against Rocky on Aug. 10, 2022. The “Praise the Lord” rapper has denied all claims.

Rocky was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on April 20, 2022 and was released on bail the same day, per the Los Angeles Times. At the time, he was returning from Barbados, where he was vacationing with Rihanna. This was only a few weeks before the birth of their first son RZA. Rocky paid a $550,000 bond for release, per the outlet.

Following his arraignment in January, Tacopina told reporters that was “cool as a cucumber” ahead of trial and eager to get the trial “over with so he can start enjoying his family.”

Rocky and Rihanna have been together since 2020 and share two sons, RZA, 2, and Riot Rose, 17 months. They were last seen stepping out for a date night at Carbone during Art Basel weekend in Miami in December.

In am August Billboard cover story, Rocky opened up about his love of Rihanna.

“I don’t think there’s a more perfect person because when the schedules are hectic, she’s very understanding of that,” he said.

Rocky added that they spend the “most time together” when their schedules are “freed up,” explaining, “It’s all understanding and compatibility.”

Rihanna Makes Rare Court Appearance to Support A$AP Rocky amid Gun Trial

Pop superstar Rihanna made a surprise appearance in court today to show her support for rapper A$AP Rocky, who is currently facing trial on gun charges. The singer, known for hits like “Umbrella” and “Diamonds,” arrived at the courthouse in a sleek black suit and sunglasses, looking every bit the fashion icon she is.

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky have been friends for years, and the singer has been vocal in her support for him since his arrest. She even started a hashtag campaign on social media, #FreeRocky, calling for his release.

A$AP Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, was arrested in July after a street altercation in Stockholm, Sweden. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and maintains that he acted in self-defense.

Rihanna’s presence in court today was a rare sight, as she typically keeps a low profile when it comes to legal matters. Her support for A$AP Rocky is a testament to the strong bond between the two artists and their shared commitment to justice.

Fans and onlookers gathered outside the courthouse to catch a glimpse of Rihanna, who waved and smiled at the crowd before heading inside to support her friend. The trial is ongoing, but with Rihanna by his side, A$AP Rocky surely has a powerful ally in his corner.

  • ASAP Rocky lawyer says gun in alleged Hollywood shooting was a prop

On the night he allegedly shot a founding member of the New York rap crew that helped launch his career, ASAP Rocky was carrying only a “prop gun” from a music video shoot that couldn’t fire real bullets, his defense attorney said Friday.

During opening arguments in the rap star’s Los Angeles assault trial, defense attorney Joe Tacopina painted Rocky — whose real name is Rakim Mayers — as the victim rather than the aggressor in an assault case that could end with him facing up to 20 years in prison.

Prosecutors have accused Mayers of shooting Terrell Ephron, a.k.a. ASAP Relli, on a Hollywood street corner after a heated argument on Nov. 6, 2021. The two were longtime friends and members of the Harlem rap crew ASAP — which stands for “Always Strive and Prosper” — but had grown apart in recent years.

While much of the prosecution’s case was aired last year during a preliminary hearing, this week was the first time the public got a look at Tacopina’s defense strategy. For an hour Friday afternoon, Tacopina hammered Ephron’s credibility, arguing he only reported Mayers to the police to boost a civil suit and insisting he knew Mayers was carrying a fake weapon.

Tacopina pointed to the fact that LAPD officers found “no evidence” of a shooting when they responded to 911 calls in the area that night, and questioned how Ephron — not the police — managed to recover two shell casings when he returned to the scene an hour later.

“What you’ll learn is that Relli returned to that scene an hour later and he attempted to fabricate evidence,” Tacopina said. “This is some offensive stuff.”

But prosecutors made a disclosure shortly before opening arguments began Friday that could upend that approach.

Deputy Dist. Atty. John Lewin said prosecutors received a late piece of “ballistic evidence” from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division on the eve of trial. The analysis, according to Lewin, confirmed the shell casings recovered at the shooting scene were most likely fired from a 9mm handgun. The “somewhat unique” markings could match to a “subset” of Glock firearms, Lewin said.

While police never found the weapon used in the shooting, the evidence could potentially undercut Tacopina’s “prop gun” defense, as such a device would fire blanks, not 9mm rounds.

Tacopina was incensed by the eleventh-hour revelation and asked Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Mark Arnold to delay opening arguments or restart jury selection in light of the new information. Arnold declined both requests, noting the evidence was not tantamount to “a smoking gun,” such as an eyewitness claiming Mayers was the shooter.

“This is not right. It’s not fair to him,” Tacopina said, pointing to Mayers.

An LAPD spokeswoman could not immediately explain why the evidence was turned over so late in a case that police presented to prosecutors in 2022.

Tacopina said the case was about Ephron’s “jealousy, lies and greed,” noting the accuser didn’t report the shooting to LAPD until two days later, after he’d retained a civil attorney. He also pointed to text messages Ephron sent claiming he was going to “get this … money” from Mayers.

“This case is all about money … an attempt at extortion by Relli so he can keep funding his extravagant lifestyle,” Tacopina said.

Tacopina said it was “miraculous” that Ephron was able to recover shell casings after seven LAPD officers searched and found nothing. He repeatedly called the prosecution’s chief witness a “perjurer” who knew Mayers was carrying a prop gun.

Mayers has a permit to carry a concealed weapon in California, according to Tacopina, but did not pack a real firearm even though he’d been threatened in the months leading up to the shooting. Tacopina said Mayers took the prop gun from the set of a recent music video shoot he’d filmed alongside Rihanna, his longtime partner with whom he has two children.

In his opening statement, Deputy Dist. Atty. Paul Przelomiec said the case was not “complicated” and largely played a pair of surveillance videos that showed Mayers and Ephron arguing and wrestling with each other on Argyle Avenue in Hollywood.

Mayers, who was flanked by two other founding members of the ASAP crew, can be clearly seen pulling a handgun from his waistband in one video. A second clip captures audible pops that sound like gunshots, but neither clip directly captures the shooting.

Przelomiec described Mayers as the aggressor in the incident, pointing to texts he sent Ephron demanding to meet up hours before the shooting. The pair had been arguing over text in recent weeks because Ephron, mistakenly, believed Mayers hadn’t paid for the funeral of a fellow crew member who had died of a drug overdose.

While the injuries Ephron suffered were extremely minor — photos displayed small scrapes on two of his knuckles — Przelomiec noted severe wounds were not necessary for a jury to find Mayers guilty of assault. Przelomiec also said he was not concerned by LAPD’s failure to locate shell casings at the scene, noting calls to 911 on the night of the incident did not pinpoint the exact location of the shooting.

Przelomiec also pointed to a search warrant executed in 2022 at Mayers’ Los Angeles residence, where police recovered a half-empty 9mm magazine. Tacopina countered that the ammunition contained in the magazine was a different brand from the type Ephron said he recovered at the scene. There is no forensic evidence tying Mayers to the shell casings.

The case, Tacopina said, relies entirely on Ephron’s testimony.

“This cases rises or falls on his credibility. The videos you saw, without his testimony, prove absolutely nothing,” Tacopina said. “You need to believe his testimony and his version of events from the video for these charges to be proven.”

Przelomiec, meanwhile, painted a portrait of betrayal, one where Ephron went to meet up with Mayers hoping to repair their fractured friendship and never expected to be met with violence.

“In his state of mind, he never believed he was going to be shot. He never believed the defendant would actually shoot him,” Przelomiec said. “He will tell you had this been a stranger, someone he didn’t know as well, he would have been petrified.”

But as their argument worsened, in the seconds before he claims he was shot, Ephron had a realization, according to Przelomiec.

“These men never came here to make peace with him,” the prosecutor said.

In a recent development in the case involving ASAP Rocky, his lawyer has come forward to claim that the gun allegedly used in the Hollywood shooting was actually just a prop. This new information has raised questions about the validity of the charges against the rapper and has sparked further debate about the use of props in the entertainment industry.

It remains to be seen how this revelation will impact the ongoing legal proceedings, but it certainly adds an interesting twist to the case. Stay tuned for more updates as this story continues to unfold.

  • A$AP Rocky assault trial jury hears opening arguments in alleged 2021 shooting case

Opening arguments began on Friday in the trial of A$AP Rocky. The Grammy-nominated rapper and partner to pop star Rihanna faces two felony charges related to a 2021 incident in Hollywood where he is accused of allegedly shooting at a former friend and music collaborator.

The hip-hop star, whose legal name is Rakim Mayers, was charged on Aug. 15, 2022 with two counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm for allegedly firing a handgun twice in the direction of the alleged victim during a confrontation.

Mayers pleaded not guilty. If convicted, the New York rapper could face up to 24 years in prison.

Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Paul Przelomiec delivered the prosecution’s opening statements, arguing before the jury that a series of videos show that the rapper fired a gun at Terell Ephron.

Mayers and Ephron, who is also known by the moniker A$AP Relli, were childhood friends and both part of the Harlem-based rap collective A$AP Mob.

“This is not a complicated case. The evidence will show the events in this case were captured on surveillance video,” Przelomiec said.

Prosecutors also presented the jury with a series of maps, identifying photos, a 911 call from the night of the incident and several videos captured by surveillance cameras in the area.

Przelomiec asked the jury to “not leave your common sense at the door” and “return the only just verdict there is.”

In the defense’s opening statements, lead attorney Joe Tacopina claimed that Mayers is “innocent” and that Ephron is seeking financial gain.

“This is about one man’s lies, jealousy, and greed,” Tacopina told the jury, casting the case as “all about money.”

Asked if Ephron is expected to take the witness stand in this case, his attorney Jamal Tooson did not respond to ABC News’ requests for comment.

Tacopina also told the jury that they will hear from multiple witnesses who will testify that the gun seen in the surveillance video is “absolutely nothing more than a prop gun” that is often used in movies and music videos.

Ephron came forward as the victim of the alleged assault and filed a civil lawsuit on Aug. 10, 2022, accusing Mayers of assault, battery, inflicting emotional distress and negligence. He claimed that he was “stuck by bullet projectile/fragments” during the alleged assault.

Court records show that Mayers denied all wrongdoing in his response to the complaint.

Ephron also filed a defamation lawsuit on Sept. 19, 2023, naming Mayers and his legal team, including lead attorney Tacopina. Court documents show that in their answer to the complaint, Mayers and his attorneys denied “each and every allegation” outlined in the suit.

According to court records, both cases are pending.

Opening statements began after a jury of seven women and five men was selected on Thursday, after Mayers turned down a plea deal offered to him on Tuesday, prosecutors and Tacopina confirmed to ABC News.

In a high-profile trial that has captured the attention of fans and legal experts alike, the jury in the assault case against rapper A$AP Rocky heard opening arguments today. The prosecution alleges that A$AP Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, was involved in a 2021 shooting incident that left one man injured.

According to the prosecution, A$AP Rocky and his entourage were involved in a physical altercation with the alleged victim, who was shot during the altercation. The defense, however, claims that A$AP Rocky was acting in self-defense and that he did not intend to harm anyone.

As the trial gets underway, both sides are expected to present evidence and witness testimony to support their respective arguments. The outcome of the trial could have significant implications for A$AP Rocky’s career and reputation, as well as for the broader conversation around self-defense and celebrity accountability.

  • A$AP Rocky gun trial to begin in Los Angeles

The shooting trial against popular rapper A$AP Rocky began Friday with opening statements in Los Angeles.

The 36-year-old hip-hop rapper, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, is accused of firing a gun at a former friend and bandmate during a heated exchange in 2021 in Hollywood.

Mayers has pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. Prosecutors say he shot in the direction of fellow rapper Terell Ephron, who went by the name A$AP Relli.

Ephron believed one of the bullets grazed his left hand, he told authorities at the time.

Jury selection began Tuesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Mayers faces up to 24 years in prison if convicted.

Former L.A. County District Attorney George Gascón said in 2022 that the shooting could have ended in tragedy.

“Discharging a gun in a public place is a serious offense that could have ended with tragic consequences not only for the person targeted but also for innocent bystanders visiting Hollywood,” Gascón said in a statement.

Rocky, a Grammy-nominated artist, is the partner of singer Rihanna, with whom he shares two children.

In 2019, he was found guilty of assault in a Swedish court after he and two members of his entourage got into a street brawl.

Although he avoided a long jail sentence, his case attracted widespread attention from President Donald Trump, reality TV star Kim Kardashian and singer Rod Stewart, who all called on Swedish authorities to release him, claiming he had been treated unfairly.

While A$AP Rocky had early success with his rap albums in 2013 and 2015, he hasn’t released much music since. But he has managed to remain in the spotlight and will star alongside Denzel Washington in movie director Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest” later this year.

The highly anticipated gun trial of rapper A$AP Rocky is set to begin in Los Angeles next week.

The rapper, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, was arrested and charged with assault after a street brawl in Sweden last year. He spent a month in jail before being released on bail.

The trial is expected to be a high-profile case, with many fans and supporters of A$AP Rocky closely following the proceedings. The rapper has maintained his innocence throughout the ordeal, claiming self-defense in the altercation.

Authorities in Los Angeles are gearing up for a media frenzy as the trial gets underway. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • A$AP Rocky assault trial heads to opening statements

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A jury of five men and seven women was seated Thursday for the trial of rapper A$AP Rocky, who is charged with firing a gun at a former friend in 2021.

Opening statements at the Los Angeles trial of the 36-year-old hip-hop superstar and fashion maven will begin Friday after the 12 jurors and four alternates are sworn in.

Rocky turned down a prosecution plea offer of 180 days in jail to risk years in prison if the jurors find him guilty of two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. He has pleaded not guilty and his lawyer says he committed no crime.

He opted instead to risk trial on two counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, charges that with conviction bring a penalty of up to 24 years in prison.

It took the two sides 2 1/2 days to pick the jurors from a pool of more than a hundred candidates who packed into a downtown LA courtroom. Those chosen include a woman who is a podcast editor and actor, and a man who has worked for more than 20 years at Trader Joe’s. The last alternate seated is a retired judge.

Many were excused for cause, others sent away by one of the two sides. Each had 10 jurors they could excuse without a reason. The defense used seven of their challenges, the prosecution just two.

One man questioned Thursday works as a civilian with the Los Angeles Police Department and has extensive ties to law enforcement including a cousin who was on the case’s witness list but is not expected to be called.

After the judge declined to dismiss him for cause, Rocky’s lawyer Joe Tacopina took him off the jury.

“Here’s a shocker, we’re going to thank and excuse juror number 27.”

Attitudes toward police were a common topic during jury selection. In several heated moments, Superior Court Judge Mark Arnold, a former sheriff’s deputy, questioned those who said they mistrusted police, nearly debating with some of them.

He asked one woman, a speech pathologist, whether he should mistrust all speech pathologists based on his bad experience with one.

When another woman brought up police corruption, Arnold demanded she “tell me about the documented corruption at LAPD that you must’ve either read about or heard.”

When she brought up the Rodney King case, he asked, “You are going to hold against current police something that happened before they were born?”

Many questions were about the fame of both Rocky and especially Rihanna, his longtime life partner and the mother of his two toddler children. She was not in court Thursday, and it’s not certain whether she will show up during the trial.

“What if Rihanna comes here to court, is it going to be hard for you to look over there, and see the defendant’s family, and deliver a guilty verdict?” Deputy District Attorney John Lewin asked one woman.

After a long pause, she said “yes.”

Rocky is accused of firing three or four shots at Terell Ephron, a friend from his teenage years, on the streets of Hollywood in 2021. Ephron said the shots grazed his knuckles. Rocky has pleaded not guilty, and his lawyers say he wasn’t even holding a real gun, but a starter pistol he used as a prop.

The highly anticipated assault trial of rapper A$AP Rocky has finally kicked off with opening statements from both the prosecution and defense. The trial, which has garnered international attention, centers around an altercation that took place in Stockholm, Sweden earlier this year.

The prosecution argued that A$AP Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, and two of his associates were involved in a violent altercation with a 19-year-old man on the streets of Stockholm. They claimed that the rapper and his entourage attacked the victim, kicking and punching him while he was on the ground.

On the other hand, the defense maintained that A$AP Rocky and his team were acting in self-defense after being harassed and followed by the alleged victim and his friends. They argued that the rapper did everything in his power to defuse the situation and only resorted to physical violence when he felt threatened.

As the trial progresses, the world will be watching closely to see how the case unfolds and what the outcome will be for A$AP Rocky. Stay tuned for more updates on this high-profile trial.

  • Rapper A$AP Rocky faces shooting assault trial in Los Angeles

An assault trial begins on Friday against rapper A$AP Rocky, who is accused of firing a gun at a former friend in Los Angeles.

The rapper, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, faces 24 years in prison if convicted on two felony assault charges in the 2021 incident near a Hollywood hotel.

The Grammy-nominated hip-hop star, who is also a fashion mogul and the longtime partner of singer Rihanna, has pleaded not guilty and denied the allegations.

The victim, fellow artist and childhood friend Terell Ephron, testified last year that bullets grazed his knuckles and he decided to seek medical treatment at a hospital after flying back to New York.

A jury of seven women and five men was selected over the course of three days this week before the opening arguments kick off on Friday. The trial is expected to last about three weeks.

Authorities say the shooting happened on 6 November in 2021 after a “heated discussion” in Hollywood between the rapper and Terell Ephron, who were both part of the A$AP Mob hip-hop collective and have known one another since their time together at a New York high school.

The rapper is alleged to have first pulled out the weapon in a threatening manner during a physical argument outdoors, just one block from the Hollywood Walk of Fame, according to the charging documents.

Prosecutors say he later fired the weapon twice in the direction of the victim, who sustained a minor injury.

The rapper rejected a plea offer ahead of the trial and said the weapon he was accused of firing was a “prop gun” incapable of firing real ammunition, according to US media. The AP news agency reported that this would have meant agreeing to 180 days in prison.

His attorney told US media that they are ready for the trial and look forward to putting it behind them.

“We’re ready to go. It’s been a long time,” his attorney Joe Tacopina told the Associated Press. “It’s been something that’s waiting over Rocky’s head and Rihanna and their family’s heads for a while. We’re anxious to get this thing underway and get this behind him.”

A key point of contention in the case is the police investigation and Mr Ephron’s injuries. The rapper’s attorneys argued in court documents that the case should be dismissed over Mr Ephron taking multiple days to report the incident.

Authorities who responded to the shooting did not find any shell casings when surveying the area but Mr Ephron returned to the scene later and gathered two shell casings he said he found in the area. He brought them when he reported the incident two days later.

The gun allegedly used in the incident was not located.

Mr Mayers’s lawyer also questioned the wound Mr Ephron had on his hand and allege it may have been from a punch.

The trial is happening at a crucial moment for A$AP Rocky, who has two children with singer Rihanna.

In May, he is set to co-chair the 2025 Met Gala alongside big names like Anna Wintour, British race car driver Lewis Hamilton, singer Pharrell Williams and basketball superstar LeBron James.

Later this summer, he is also set to appear in a film directed by Spike Lee called “Highest 2 Lowest” with acting legend Denzel Washington.

The star was previously given a two-year suspended sentence for his role in a brawl in Stockholm in August 2019.

The rapper and two members of his entourage were convicted of kicking and beating a 19-year-old man after an argument. They said they acted in self-defence, but the court rejected their argument.

The case drew worldwide media attention after US president Donald Trump unsuccessfully tried to secure Mr Mayers’s release from prison as he awaited trial.

Born in New York, Mr Mayers was one of the biggest break-out stars of the 2010s, earning eight platinum singles in the US including Wild For The Night, Everyday, LSD and A$AP Forever.

He rose to fame after being championed by Drake, and has worked with artists including Alicia Keys, Lana Del Rey, Skepta, Selena Gomez and Kendrick Lamar.

The BBC’s Mark Savage contributed reporting.
