Sports Mole previews Sunday’s Serie A clash between Roma and Napoli, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Roma‘s revival will be put to the test on Sunday evening, when Serie A leaders Napoli pay a visit to Stadio Olimpico for the Derby del Sole.

After inching up to ninth in Italy’s top flight, the Giallorossi secured progress in the Europa League, while their southern rivals stayed clear of the chasing pack with last week’s win over Juventus.

Thursday’s 2-0 home victory over an Eintracht Frankfurt side flying high in the Bundesliga served as more evidence that Roma have turned a corner under the steadying influence of Claudio Ranieri.

The Rome-born boss has helped his boyhood club recover from a slow start in the Europa League to finish 15th in the league phase and set up a playoff to reach the last 16 for a third straight season.

The Giallorossi are also unbeaten in six Serie A matches, after losing seven of the previous nine; following recent victories against Genoa and Udinese, they will now aim to post three consecutive league wins for the first time since March.

Last week’s win in Udine – a first away success of the season, secured by second-half spot kicks from top scorer Artem Dovbyk and captain Lorenzo Pellegrini – saw Ranieri become the 15th coach in Italian top-flight history to reach 200 wins.

The ex-Napoli manager now heads into a pair of tough fixtures, first facing his former club in Serie A, then visiting AC Milan in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals.

Recent history will not be on his side this weekend: Roma have won just two of their last eight home games against Sunday’s visitors, failing to find the net in three of the last four.

Indeed, Napoli have been beaten just once in the clubs’ last 10 meetings, with their sole defeat during that time being sealed by a goal from then-Roma striker Romelu Lukaku.

The well-travelled forward now plies his trade in Naples, and his penalty completed the Partenopei’s comeback at home to Juventus last week, after in-form midfielder Frank Anguissa had got them back on level terms.

A winner of multiple Scudetti as player and coach, Napoli boss Antonio Conte has clearly instilled resilience in a squad that put up such a tame defence of their title last term – despite losing two star players.

Conte’s table-toppers have not only won the most games after going in front – 17 out of 18 so far – but they have also won the joint-most after trailing (four), leaving them just ahead of reigning champions Inter Milan in the standings.

Having now won their last seven Serie A matches, another victory in the Derby del Sole – ‘the Derby of the Sun’ – would see Napoli put together a run of eight for the first time since early 2023.

Then, they were en route to a third league title, and number four will come one step closer if they can prevail at Stadio Olimpico.

Having been forced to field his strongest team in midweek, aiming to avert an early exit from the Europa League, Claudio Ranieri may ask the same men to go again on Sunday evening.

Enjoying a rare injury-free period, Roma have just lost Spanish centre-back Mario Hermoso to Bayer Leverkusen – but he had become a back-up player under Ranieri.

Starting up front, Artem Dovbyk has scored in his last three league games; the Ukrainian striker has also been directly involved in more goals than anyone else over the past six Serie A matchdays – four of his own and two assists.

Meanwhile, Romelu Lukaku will lead Napoli’s attack against his old club, having netted the winner in November’s reverse fixture. Last week, the Belgium international made his 150th Serie A appearance, 32 of which were with Roma last season.

Left-back Mathias Olivera is the visitors’ sole absentee, as defensive rock Alessandro Buongiorno has resumed full training and could be named on the bench.

Ex-Roma duo Leonardo Spinazzola and Juan Jesus will fill in again, with the former deputising for Olivera and the latter holding the fort for Buongiorno.

    Roma possible starting lineup:
Svilar; Mancini, Hummels, Ndicka; Saelemaekers, Kone, Paredes, Angelino; Dybala, Pellegrini; Dovbyk

    Napoli possible starting lineup:
Meret; Di Lorenzo, Rrahmani, Jesus, Spinazzola; Anguissa, Lobotka, McTominay; Politano, Lukaku, Neres

    SM words green background

    We say: Roma 1-1 Napoli

Roma are far tougher to beat at home than away, so they could stall Napoli’s winning run and keep their own momentum building.

Shutting out Antonio Conte’s side entirely may be too much to ask, but Claudio Ranieri’s men have sufficient firepower to score at least once.

  • Roma vs. Napoli: Serie A Match Preview

Piece by piece, Roma is rounding into form. The Giallorossi are still quite a ways away from contending for Champions League football in Serie A, but the performances are starting to get just a touch more consistent, just a touch more positive. The midweek win against Eintracht Frankfurt, combined with recent positive results in the league, suggest that the worst may be behind us for this season from hell. I Lupi are now operating like the football club we thought they were.

Naturally, this means that Roma are now in line for one of their most challenging matches of the season. The Derby Del Sole doesn’t have the cachet of the Derby Della Capitale, but Roma’s matches against Napoli are always passionate. Given Roma and Lazio’s respective ups and downs over the past decade, the matches against Napoli have been more consistently important for the overall success of Roma’s season than the cross-city clashes.

This season has been particularly strong for I Partenopei, as they currently lead the Serie A standings with 53 points from 22 matches, boasting a record of 17 wins, 2 draws, and 3 losses. Under the guidance of manager Antonio Conte, Napoli has demonstrated resilience, notably with a recent 2-1 comeback victory over previously unbeaten Juventus. Even with the departure of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to PSG, the team has maintained momentum, with former Roma striker Romelu Lukaku once again dominating in Serie A. With Napoli looking to extend their lead at the top of the Serie A table, Roma will need to capitalize on their recent improvements to challenge the league leaders effectively.

    What to Watch For

Is Artem Dovbyk Beginning to Gel?

    Udinese v AS Roma - Serie A

When Roma secured Artem Dovbyk from Girona last summer, expectations were sky-high. The Ukrainian striker was anticipated to be the finished article from the first minute he donned the Giallorossi jersey, with hopes he might even contend for a capocannoniere title. However, as with many a transition for strikers into Serie A, the initial stages of Dovbyk’s time in Rome were marked by adaptation challenges. His early performances were a mix of promise and inconsistency, leaving fans wondering if Dovbyk would live up to the billing.

Fast forward to the present, and it appears Dovbyk is finally hitting his stride. The striker has found the back of the net in his last three league appearances, showcasing a growing synergy with his teammates. His recent contributions have been pivotal, not just in terms of goals but also in his overall play, indicating a player becoming increasingly comfortable in Claudio Ranieri’s system.

With that recent form in mind, all eyes will be on Dovbyk to see if he can maintain his importance in Roma’s attack against their strongest opponent in months. Napoli boasts a robust defense thanks to Antonio Conte, and Dovbyk’s ability to push through against them makes tomorrow’s match an ideal acid test for the Ukrainian’s newfound form. A strong performance against such a high-caliber opponent would not only bolster Roma’s aspirations but also firmly establish Dovbyk as the striker the Giallorossi faithful had hoped for. The Derby del Sole is always a fixture of passion and intensity. With Dovbyk’s resurgence, Roma might just have the edge they’ve been seeking.

    Will Soulé Repay Ranieri’s Trust?

AS Roma v Eintracht Frankfurt - UEFA Europa League 2024/25 League Phase MD8

Photo by Matteo Ciambelli/DeFodi Images via Getty Images

Roma’s other major attacking signing of the summer was, of course, Matias Soulé. The Argentinian youngster was expected to inject fresh energy into the Giallorossi’s attack, and perhaps pave the way for Roma to survive and thrive in a post-Dybala environment. However, his journey has been anything but straightforward—and not just because Paulo Dybala looks set to stay in Rome for another few seasons. Limited playing time in recent months has led to speculation about his future, with clubs like Fulham expressing interest in a loan deal. Despite these overtures, both Ranieri and Soulé have shown a mutual commitment to his development in Rome.

Recent performances suggest that this patience may yet pay off. In the Europa League clash against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday, Soulé made a significant impact off the bench, orchestrating a brilliant solo run that culminated in an assist for Eldor Shomurodov’s goal, sealing a 2-0 victory. This moment of brilliance highlighted the potential that had been eagerly anticipated by fans, Ranieri, and management alike.

As Roma prepares for tomorrow’s match, the question looms: will Soulé repay Ranieri’s trust with even more impact in significant matches? In some ways, there’s no alternative. Nicola Zalewski is set for a loan move to Inter Milan, and with multiple competitions to juggle and Tommaso Baldanzi more in the midfield these days, opportunities on the wing should become more frequent for Soulé. A strong performance against the league leaders could not only solidify his place in the squad but also serve as a turning point in his Roma career. The stage is set for Soulé to showcase his talents and affirm that Ranieri’s faith was well-placed.

Roma will be relying on their top goal-scorer, Edin Dzeko, to lead the attack and find the back of the net against Napoli’s solid defense. Meanwhile, Napoli will be looking to their star forward, Lorenzo Insigne, to continue his impressive form and help secure a win on the road.

  • Roma, Ranieri: “Dybala importante, ci contiamo.

“No, mi sono concentrato proprio sugli aspetti tecnico-tattici.

“Ci conto tantissimo. Vogliamo fare bene e andare avanti in Europa.

In a recent interview, Roma's manager Claudio Ranieri spoke highly of the importance of Paulo Dybala to the team, stating "Dybala is an important player for us and we are counting on him to deliver on the pitch."

Ranieri also had praise for the Roma fans, describing them as "magnificent" and promising to give their all in every game. "The support from our fans is crucial for us and we will do everything in our power to make them proud," he added.

With a strong squad and the backing of their passionate supporters, Roma looks set to have a successful season ahead. The team will be looking to Dybala to lead the way and inspire them to victory in the upcoming matches.

    Terminato il primo tempo dell’Olimpico, all’intervallo Roma-Eintracht Francoforte è sull’1-0.

  • Ranieri on Pellegrini pick and Roma ‘Achilles Heel’ with Eintracht

Ranieri on Pellegrini pick and Roma ‘Achilles Heel’ with Eintracht

Ranieri on Pellegrini pick and Roma ‘Achilles Heel’ with Eintracht

Claudio Ranieri explains why he chose Lorenzo Pellegrini to start for Roma against Eintracht Frankfurt, warning the greatest strength of the Germans ‘is also our Achilles Heel.’

It kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico at 20.00 GMT.

You can follow all the build-up and action as it happens from this game and Braga-Lazio on the Liveblog.

Lorenzo Pellegrini returns to the starting XI with Paulo Dybala and Artem Dovbyk.

“Pellegrini is an important player, he has great technique and can make the difference,” Ranieri told Sky Sport Italia.

“Technically and tactically, he can score goals, provide assists, he runs hard and gives us a great deal, so it is right to put him in a position to give us what he is capable of.”

Ranieri looks to experience at Roma

Mats Hummels and Leandro Paredes had been practically pushed out of the squad under Ivan Juric, but have become key figures once Ranieri took over.

“I am counting a great deal on their experience. We want to go forward in Europe and it all depends on what we do this evening.”

The Stadio Olimpico is sold out once again, as Ranieri has also helped bridge the tension between club and supporters.

“Our fans are magnificent and we must give the maximum for them.”

While their Eternal City rivals Lazio are top of the table and the only side already guaranteed a place in the Round of 16, the Giallorossi go into this final matchday in 21st position and at risk of early elimination from Europe.

They host high-flying Eintracht Frankfurt, who sit in second place and want to lock down a top eight finish as well as a strong draw going forward.

“We know that Eintracht Frankfurt will clam up and go on the counter-attack, they are very good on transitions, and we also know that is our Achilles Heel. We need to be very careful and focused,” concluded the coach.

“We will try to win and at least aim not to lose.”

A victory would suffice to get them into the play-offs.

Ranieri on Pellegrini pick and Roma ‘Achilles Heel’ with Eintracht

Claudio Ranieri has spoken out about Roma’s decision to start Lorenzo Pellegrini in their Europa League clash against Eintracht Frankfurt, calling it a risky move. The Italian manager believes that Pellegrini’s recent injury woes could have been a factor in the decision, but ultimately it is up to the player and the coaching staff to determine his readiness.

Ranieri also pointed out what he believes to be Roma’s ‘Achilles Heel’ in their upcoming match against Eintracht Frankfurt. The former Leicester City manager highlighted the German side’s strong counter-attacking abilities and their ability to exploit Roma’s defensive vulnerabilities. He stressed the importance of staying organized and disciplined at the back in order to contain Eintracht’s attacking threat.

As Roma prepare to face Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League, all eyes will be on Pellegrini and whether he can rise to the occasion despite his recent injury concerns. Ranieri’s insights into the team’s strategy and vulnerabilities will be crucial in determining their success in this crucial European clash.

  • Roma Hosts Eintracht Frankfurt With Place in Europa League Knockout Round on the Line

There’s no question that the season has been a disappointment for the Giallorossi. Champions League football via the league route appears to be out of reach, and even a return to Europa League football looks to be a tall task, with Roma currently sitting in ninth place through 22 match weeks. It’s not impossible, but it will take plenty of positive results to leapfrog enough teams to secure European football for next season.

However, as bad as this season has been and as disappointing as the final league place has been for Roma over the last few seasons, there has been a silver lining. The Giallorossi have made four consecutive European semifinals, including the 2022 Conference League title and a trip to the 2023 Europa League finale. And now, the Europa League again gives the Giallorossi the chance to redeem an otherwise disappointing season. However, a loss to Frankfurt could result in Roma being eliminated in the group stage of a European competition for the first time since the 2014/15 Champions League—something that has never occurred for the club in this competition.

The task won’t be easy as a strong Eintracht Frankfurt team arrives at the Stadio Olimpico. Historically, German teams haven’t been kind to the Giallorossi, who have won just three of their last 14 matches against Bundesliga sides (D5, L6). However, home advantage has been crucial for Roma, with the Giallorossi winning 33 of their last 45 European home matches (D9, L3)—keeping a clean sheet in 24 of those games. Something has to give in this situation, so let’s examine some key points for the match.

    What To Watch For

Will the Roma Continue Its Steady Improvement?

    AS Roma Training Session

Photo by Luciano Rossi/AS Roma via Getty Images

After an atrocious start to the season and the firings of two managers, Claudio Ranieri was brought back to the Italian capital to steady a sinking ship. The first few weeks saw Ranieri deal with rough results, including a draw against Tottenham between losses to Serie A powers Napoli and Atalanta. However, Roma has since racked up seven wins, two draws, and just two losses in all competitions.

It’s a stretch that has seen Roma fight for every point, often salvaging results from behind, as we saw against Udinese on Sunday. The Giallorossi will be eager to bounce back from one of the few blemishes in that stretch—a 1-0 loss to AZ Alkmaar last Thursday in the penultimate Europa League match. That defeat put Roma in its current win-or-go-home predicament.

The Giallorossi must be at their best to take all three points from an Eintracht Frankfurt side that sits second in the Europa League and third in the Bundesliga tables. And results against those top sides have been difficult for Roma this season—something that Claudio Ranieri was asked about at the pre-match press conference.

“There’s always room for improvement. When you’re facing big teams, in terms of your approach, how you play in the final third, and how you play in the middle of the pitch, you have to do really well to contain them and cause them problems. The lads are improving. Cast your minds back to when I started out here and I was surprised when we didn’t play as I hoped in Naples. We’ve managed to do that from the Atalanta game onwards – we’re on the up. Every day I see that the team working to improve. As a coach, this is the best thing to witness.”

Now, it’ll be up to the players to follow up on Ranieri’s words and show that they’ve taken the next step in their overall improvement. It’ll be crucial for Frankfurt to be followed in the league by Napoli and Milan.

How Will the Giallorossi Line Up?

AS Roma v SS Lazio - Serie A

Photo by Fabio Rossi/AS Roma via Getty Images

On Sunday against Udinese, Claudio Ranieri elected to rest key players Leandro Paredes, Alexis Saelemaekers, Mats Hummels, and Paulo Dybala. Only Dybala played a small role off the bench. That move was made with an eye on this fixture, given its importance, with the Giallorossi yet to secure a place in the knockout rounds—something Ranieri tried to downplay.

“Every game is important, as it’s a chance for the team to improve. When I came into the club everyone was worried about what might happen to Roma. Now we’ve just got to do well in every game, and we’ll see where that gets us.”

All four players are expected to return to the starting lineup for this pivotal match against Frankfurt. It seems that even with Bryan Cristante fit again, Ranieri will stick with the Paredes-Koné duo that has become a staple during Cristante’s absence—something that Ranieri acknowledged.

“All of the rumours I hear about Leandro emanate from you journalists – I haven’t heard them from him. As for Hermoso, if he doesn’t want to stay then I won’t keep him or anyone else who’d rather leave. Cristante has found his feet again. He’s got different characteristics, but he could play that role. He doesn’t possess the directness that Paredes has, but he’s got other qualities. They could play together and complement each other – I’d be happy with that. I knew that in Udine I was sacrificing quality, but it’s something I absolutely had to do. I was convinced by my choices and that those players would put in good performances.”

With the midfield more or less confirmed, we should see a repeated of Ranieri’s preferred starting lineup from the past several weeks.

ROMA (3-4-2-1): Svilar; Mancini, Hummels, Ndicka; Saelemaekers, Paredes, Koné, Angeliño; Dybala, Pellegrini; Dovbyk.

AS Roma will face off against Eintracht Frankfurt in a crucial Europa League match with a spot in the knockout round on the line. The Italian side will host the German club at the Stadio Olimpico in what promises to be an exciting and intense battle between two top European teams.

Roma currently sits in second place in Group E, just one point behind leaders Eintracht Frankfurt. A win for Roma would see them leapfrog their opponents and secure a spot in the next round of the competition, while a loss could see them facing an early exit.

Both teams have been in solid form in their respective leagues and will be looking to carry that momentum into this crucial Europa League clash. Roma will be counting on their star players such as Tammy Abraham and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to deliver the goods, while Eintracht Frankfurt will be relying on the likes of Filip Kostic and Daichi Kamada to lead them to victory.

With so much at stake, this match is sure to be a thrilling encounter with both teams giving it their all to secure a place in the knockout round. Fans can expect a high-intensity game filled with drama and excitement as these two European giants battle it out for supremacy. Be sure to tune in and catch all the action as Roma hosts Eintracht Frankfurt with a place in the Europa League knockout round on the line.

    Ao lado do filho, Gaab, e do irmão, Mr. Dan, Rodriguinho celebrou a volta à casa mais vigiada do Brasil, após a participação no BBB 24;

    Enquanto isso, Gracyanne Barbosa ficou dentro de casa. A sister foi escolhida por Eva e Renata para não assistir ao Show de Quarta desta semana;

    O primeiro beijo

    Depois de muito flerte, troca de olhares e carícias, Diogo Almeida e Aline finalmente se beijaram;

    Quem pareceu não ter aprovado muito o grande momento da madrugada foi Vinícius, que conversou com Aline pouco tempo após o beijo;

O promotor de eventos fez um sinal negativo com a mão e desabafou: “Você não me decepcionou, você só me surpreendeu, conseguiu me surpreender. Fizeram assim para mim [dedo para baixo]”, disse ele.>

    Big Fone rendendo

    Enquanto o after rolava na área externa, Eva e Renata tiveram uma conversa no Quarto Anos 50;

    Chorando, Eva admitiu o baque com questionamentos de Aline e Vinícius. “Eu só tenho essas armas, eu não sei quem me defende nos quartos ou se alguém bate no peito por mim”, comentou Renata;

    Sem citar nomes, Vitória deu a entender que falava de uma rival no jogo;

“Eu virei as costas, você estava dançando e tal.

Vittoria in trasferta? Ci sta mancando”

Vittoria in trasferta? Ci sta mancando"

Ranieri deciderà in extremis.

    Portiere: Rui Patricio
    Difensori: Karsdorp, Smalling, Mancini, Vina
    Centrocampisti: Cristante, Veretout, Pellegrini

    Diretta Udinese – Roma (None-None) Serie A 2024
