Mitt Romney, lionized in 2024, was hated by the left in 2012

To the editor: According to Opinion contributing writer Lanhee J. Chen, a candidate for California state controller in 2022, Sen. Mitt Romeny’s (R-Utah) two decades of public service were “historic” because he was a centrist Republican, and he tried to work in a bipartisan manner. (“Romney’s Senate exit marks an end to the bipartisanship Washington desperately needs,” Opinion, Dec. 24)

However, when Romney was running for president against the incumbent Barack Obama in 2012, the left caricatured him as a jerk who would put his dog in a crate on top of his car when he took his family on vacation.

It’s always entertaining how politics are played on both sides of the coin depending on expediency.

In 2012, Mitt Romney was the target of intense criticism and animosity from the left during his presidential campaign against Barack Obama. He was painted as an out-of-touch millionaire who only cared about the wealthy and would enact policies that would harm the middle and lower classes.

Fast forward to 2024, and Mitt Romney is now being lionized by many on the left for his willingness to stand up against the divisive and destructive policies of the Trump administration. He has become a voice of reason and moderation in a political landscape that has become increasingly polarized.

This shift in public perception of Romney highlights the ever-changing nature of politics and the complexities of individual politicians. While he may have been reviled in the past, his actions in the present have earned him newfound respect and admiration from those who once viewed him with disdain.

It serves as a reminder that politicians are not static figures, but rather individuals who can evolve and change over time. And in Romney’s case, his evolution has led to a surprising turnaround in public opinion and a newfound appreciation for his willingness to stand up for what he believes is right.
