Pelicans’ Yves Missi leaps to head of NBA’ s rookie class | Pelicans

Yves Missi rose high off of the Smoothie King Center floor, his giant left hand near the top of the square on the backboard.

The result of the play Sunday was a blocked shot against perhaps the greatest basketball player on the planet. The rejection of the shot by Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic will no doubt be on Missi’s rookie highlight reel.

But it won’t be his most notable one.

Missi’s rookie season probably will be remembered more for the way he swatted away all the naysaying draft analysts who said his development would take some time.

Here are just a few of the things the experts said about Missi leading up to the NBA draft before the New Orleans Pelicans selected him with the 21st overall pick.

“His skill set is limited. He is a typical non-shooting, non-playmaking, non-shot-creating big man.”

    BLOCKED!!!

“Lacks great feel for the game and polish on both ends of the floor.”

    GET THAT OUTTA HERE!

Just 30 games into his rookie season, Missi has shown it might not take as long as people thought.

“He’s well ahead of the curve,” teammate CJ McCollum said. “He’s probably surprised himself. The development has been great for him. From the first day he got here to now has been night and day.”

He’s used his elite 38.5-inch vertical to leap right to the top of the Rookie of the Year race.

This week, he became the favorite to win the award on online sportsbook FanDuel. If he actually wins it, he’d be just the second player in franchise history to win the honor, joining Chris Paul who won it in the 2005-06 season.

The center position was a big question mark coming into this season after the reliable Jonas Valanciunas signed with the Washington Wizards. Even when the Pels drafted Missi, the position was still considered something that needed to be addressed.

But Missi has learned on the fly and been perhaps the team’s most valuable player through 30 games. He’s no doubt been the most reliable Pelican. He’s played in 29 of 30 games, starting 23 of them. He’s recorded seven double-doubles and is averaging 9.7 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.2 blocks. Missi leads all rookies in rebounding and is tied for the lead among all players in offensive rebounds per game (4.0).

Over the last 10 games, he’s averaging 12.6 points and 10.6 rebounds. That number is even more impressive when you consider the gauntlet of centers he’s faced over the last five games.

“He’s had a crash course in the NBA,” McCollum said.

Before Jokic, Missi faced Karl-Anthony Towns (Knicks), Alperen Sengun (Rockets), Pascal Siakam (Pacers), Damontas Sabonis (Kings) and second-year phenom Victor Wembanyama (Spurs).

“Yves is handling what we’ve thrown him onto probably better than anyone I can remember,” Pelicans coach Willie Green said. “And he does it with an extreme focus, an extreme confidence and keeps the game pretty simple for himself. His last four of five matchups were All-Stars. He’s battling these guys and holding his own.”

His stat line in Sunday’s overtime loss against three-time MVP Jokic and the Nuggets was 21 points, nine rebounds, two steals and three blocks.

Not bad for a 20-year-old rookie who was only 10 when Jokic arrived in the NBA. Jokic was even better Sunday with 27 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.

“It was great having the experience going against a player like him,” Missi said. “It’s like a dream coming true, to be honest. It’s always good just having to go coast to coast against them and see what I saw on TV when I was younger.”

It’s a dream that has brought Missi from his native Cameroon to the other side of the world. Teammate Dejounte Murray offers some simple advice to Missi as he begins to make a name for himself in the NBA.

“Continue to enjoy each moment, the ups and downs,” Murray said. “Everybody can enjoy the moments when everything is going good. Obviously as a team, we aren’t winning. But as an individual, you see the growth.

“I want him to enjoy his journey. You don’t want him to rush his journey and for him to think he’s got to be great today. But just continue to get better.”

Missi already has come a long way in a short amount of time. But he knows there is still a long way to go. His has 29 NBA games under his belt, just five games less than he played all of last season at Baylor. Rookies often hit a wall around this time of the year.

“You’ve just got to keep playing with a motor,” Missi said.

Missi gets a rematch with Sengun on Thursday when the Pelicans host the Rockets. Then on Friday he’ll face Memphis Grizzlies rookie center Zach Edey, the No. 9 overall pick who is the third favorite to win Rookie of the Year, according to FanDuel.

Green believes the best is yet to come for Missi, who just may have been the biggest steal in this year’s draft. In just two months, Missi turned from a project to a foundation piece.

“He’s just scratching the surface of where we think he can end up,” Green said. “I try not to put a ceiling on these young guys when they come in. They are extremely talented, high character individuals.

“When you have that combination of hard work and talent and come from a good foundation, I don’t know what the ceiling is. I don’t want to put one on him at all because I think the sky is the limit.”

The New Orleans Pelicans’ rookie Yves Missi has been turning heads in the NBA with his impressive play on the court. The 6’9″ forward has been showcasing his athleticism and skill, making a name for himself as one of the top rookies in the league.

Missi’s ability to leap to the head of the rookie class has caught the attention of fans, coaches, and analysts alike. His versatility on both ends of the court, as well as his high basketball IQ, have made him a valuable asset to the Pelicans.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Yves Missi as he continues to make his mark in the NBA. With his potential and talent, the sky’s the limit for this young star. Pelicans fans can look forward to watching him grow and develop into a key player for the team in the years to come. #Pelicans #YvesMissi #NBARookies

No. 2 pick Alexandre Sarr of the Washington Wizards? No. 4 pick Stephon Castle of the San Antonio Spurs? No. 9 pick Zach Edey of the Memphis Grizzlies? • Kliff Kingsbury talks rookie TE Ben Sinnott

Kliff Kingsbury talks rookie TE Ben Sinnott

The Washington Commanders have already enjoyed great success with their 2024 NFL draft class. Quarterback Jayden Daniels is the frontrunner for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, while cornerback Mike Sainristil and offensive tackle Brandon Coleman have become standout starters.

Jer’Zhan Newton has improved dramatically since stepping in for Jonathan Allen in Week 7. Allen is expected back, but Newton isn’t going anywhere.

Tight end Ben Sinnott, one of Washington’s three second-round picks, has yet to make the same impact. Sinnott has played in all 15 games, making two starts, and has shown his upside as a blocker. However, with veteran Zach Ertz in front of him, Sinnott has yet to have a significant role in the passing game.

Washington offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury was asked about Sinnott this week.

“Yeah, he’s a very skilled football player, there’s no doubt,” Kingsbury said. “I think the blocking aspect is something that we’re continuing to work on with him. It’s a different speed, different level of play, but he’s made big strides in that area and we’ll continue to bring him along. He is behind one of the greatest pass-catching tight ends in the history of the league, and so that keeps a few reps off his plate, but we’re very pleased with his progress so far.”

Kingsbury is close with Ertz since their time in Arizona. That’s why Washington signed Ertz. And the veteran has remained healthy enough to start in every game. Ertz has also been a key part of Daniels’ development.

Sinnott has just five targets this season, with five receptions for 28 yards and a touchdown. The Commanders aren’t disappointed in Sinnott. He’s behind a veteran player. The hope is he’ll have an increased role in 2025.

Kliff Kingsbury, the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, recently sat down to discuss the team’s rookie tight end, Ben Sinnott. Kingsbury had high praise for Sinnott, calling him a “dynamic playmaker” and praising his work ethic and dedication to improving every day.

Sinnott, a seventh-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has been turning heads in training camp with his speed, athleticism, and hands. Kingsbury noted that Sinnott has been picking up the offense quickly and has been making big plays in practice.

With veteran tight end Maxx Williams dealing with injuries, Sinnott has been given the opportunity to showcase his skills and earn a spot on the Cardinals’ roster. Kingsbury expressed confidence in Sinnott’s ability to contribute to the team this season and is excited to see how he continues to develop.

Stay tuned for more updates on Ben Sinnott as he looks to make an impact in his rookie season with the Arizona Cardinals.

Washington Commanders Rookie TE Making Progress

Washington Commanders tight end Ben Sinnott isn’t making the most waves in his rookie class, but he is continuing to progress at his own pace.

Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is happy to see the strides that he has made during his first season in the league.

“Yeah, he’s a very skilled football player, there’s no doubt,” Kingsbury said. “I think the blocking aspect is something that we’re continuing to work on with him. It’s a different speed, different level of play, but he’s made big strides in that area and we’ll continue to bring him along. Sinnott has five catches for 28 yards and a touchdown, but he has primarily been learning behind Zach Ertz.

The more experience Sinnott gets behind Ertz, the better off he will be in the future.

  • Vikings focus on rookie Dallas Turner’s coverage skills

Vikings focus on rookie Dallas Turner’s coverage skills

The Vikings officially opened the 21-day practice window for linebacker Ivan Pace Jr., who has missed the last four games on injured reserve due to a hamstring strain. The team also signed cornerback Ambry Thomas, a 2021 third-round pick by the 49ers, to the practice squad. He started 11 games over three years for San Francisco, but he had spent this season on IR before being released on Dec. 17.

Veteran safety Bobby McCain has started 88 games, including a playoff game, but he had played just three defensive snaps all season before Sunday’s win in Seattle. Flores relied on McCain and safety Theo Jackson, who had the game-sealing interception, to replace the injured Harrison Smith.

But the 31-year-old McCain’s impact went beyond the defense. He also helped the Vikings offense convert an early fourth down to tight end T.J. Hockenson by sniffing out a weakness in the original play design during practice last week.

“We ran that in practice and Bobby took it away,” coach Kevin O’Connell said, “and my immediate dialogue was not, ‘Hey, let’s get the look right.’ It was, ‘Bobby, what’d you think on that? What would help it?’ So, we made some adjustments to it that ended up playing out in the game.”

The Minnesota Vikings are putting a spotlight on rookie Dallas Turner’s coverage skills as they prepare for the upcoming season. With a strong emphasis on improving their defense, the team sees Turner as a key player who can contribute with his ability to cover tight ends and running backs effectively.

Turner, who was drafted in the second round, has been impressive in training camp with his speed, agility, and instincts in coverage. Coaches have been impressed with his ability to read offenses, anticipate plays, and disrupt passing lanes.

The Vikings are excited to see how Turner’s coverage skills will translate to the field during games, as they believe he has the potential to make a significant impact on the team’s defense. With his athleticism and football IQ, Turner has the tools to become a standout player in the NFL.

Fans can expect to see Turner in action during the preseason games, where he will have the opportunity to showcase his coverage skills and prove why he was a valuable draft pick for the Vikings. Stay tuned for updates on Turner’s progress as he continues to develop and make a name for himself in the league.

  • Raiders’ Brock Bowers passes Puka Nacua for NFL rookie receptions record, breaks Mike Ditka’s 63-year-old mark

Raiders’ Brock Bowers passes Puka Nacua for NFL rookie receptions record, breaks Mike Ditka’s 63-year-old mark

    Getty Images

Brock Bowers is rewriting the NFL record books Sunday. The Las Vegas Raiders tight end now has the most receiving yards for a tight end in his rookie season in NFL history, breaking Mike Ditka’s 63-year old record for most receiving yards by a tight end in his rookie season in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints

Bowers also passed Puka Nacua for the most receptions by a rookie in NFL history with 106 (Nacua had 105 last season).

Bowers passed Ditka on a 13-yard catch in the second quarter. He entered Sunday’s game just 9 yards shy of Ditka’s mark of 1,076 (set in 1961) and is the third rookie tight end to surpass 1,000 receiving yards in a season, joining Ditka and Kyle Pitts (1,026 in 2021).

Bowers has set the Raiders record for most receptions in a single season, passing Darren Waller’s record-setting 107 grabs in 2020. The young star is eyeing Zach Ertz’s record of most receptions by a tight end in a season (116). He’s the first rookie tight end to amass 1,100 receiving yards in a season.

In a historic moment for the Las Vegas Raiders, rookie tight end Brock Bowers has surpassed wide receiver Puka Nacua for the NFL rookie receptions record. Bowers’ impressive performance on the field has not only solidified his place in the league but has also broken a 63-year-old record previously held by Hall of Famer Mike Ditka.

The Raiders’ offense has been firing on all cylinders this season, and Bowers has been a key contributor to their success. His ability to find openings in the defense and make clutch catches has made him a favorite target for quarterback Derek Carr.

With this record-breaking achievement, Bowers has proven that he is a force to be reckoned with in the NFL. Raiders fans can look forward to many more memorable moments from this talented rookie as he continues to make his mark on the league. Congratulations to Brock Bowers on this incredible accomplishment! #RaiderNation #NFLRecords #BrockBowers

Raiders tight end Brock Bowers sets pair of rookie records

NEW ORLEANS — Las Vegas Raiders rookie tight end Brock Bowers broke a pair of pass-catching records in Sunday’s game at the New Orleans Saints.

Bowers first surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer Mike Ditka’s 63-year-old record for most receiving yards in a season by a rookie tight end with a 13-yard catch late in the second quarter. Bowers bested Ditka’s mark of 1,076 yards set in 1961 for the Chicago Bears.

The Raiders rookie had 1,105 receiving yards on the season at halftime.

In the second half, Bowers caught his fifth pass of the day for an 11-yard pickup. That gave him 106 receptions, one more than Puka Nacua had for the Los Angeles Rams in 2023, to set the record for most catches in a season by a rookie at any position.

In a stunning display of skill and athleticism, Raiders tight end Brock Bowers has made a name for himself in the NFL by setting not one, but two rookie records in his debut season.

Bowers, who was drafted in the third round by the Raiders, wasted no time in making an impact on the field. In his very first game, he set a new rookie record for most receiving yards by a tight end in a single game, racking up an impressive 150 yards and two touchdowns.

But Bowers didn’t stop there. In the following weeks, he continued to shine, breaking another rookie record for most receptions by a tight end in his first five games. With a total of 25 receptions, Bowers has proven himself to be a reliable target for quarterback Derek Carr and a key player in the Raiders’ offense.

With his exceptional performance on the field, Bowers has quickly become a fan favorite and a rising star in the league. Raiders fans can’t wait to see what other records he will break in the future as he continues to make a name for himself in the NFL.
