Zach Edey’s usage rate and minutes have gone down since he returned from a two-game absence from Concussion Protocol. Before missing those two games, Edey had back-to-back games with 21 points, 16 rebounds, and two blocks against the Toronto Raptors, and 16 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks against the New Orleans Pelicans.
He hasn’t had a double-figure scoring or rebounding game in any of the six games (five starts) he has played since returning from the injury. Some of that can be tied to usage, as he has only had one double-digit shot attempt game in the last six. Also, his early season foul troubles returned in two of his last three games including fouling out of their recent loss to the Houston Rockets.
Despite the struggles from Edey in the Grizzlies’ last six games, his fall from grace isn’t steep as he remains firmly in the Rookie of the Year race.

The NBA.com Kia Rookie Ladder only dropped Zach Edey one spot from four to five in this week’s edition, below San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle. His struggles are apparent but after two battles with the Houston Rockets and former Grizzlies center Steven Adams, Edey’s game isn’t a concern to the former starting center.
Zach Edey committed a total of 11 fouls in their two games against the Rockets while only totaling six points and 10 rebounds combined in the two games. However, Steven Adams had praise for the rookie stating he has really good potential and that he has to learn the NBA game.
FanDuel Sportsbook betting odds believe the same thing as Edey only fell to second in Rookie of the Year odds (+350) below Kia Rookie Ladder’s back-to-back number ranking Washington Wizards forward Alexandre Sarr (+150).

Although Zach Edey fell in the new Rookie Ladder rankings and FanDuel Sportsbook odds, Jaylen Wells has remained in the third place ranking in this week’s edition. He also rose one spot in the betting odds from fourth to third place (+500) jumping New Orleans Pelicans center Yves Missi (+800), who fell to fifth behind Stephon Castle (+700).
Wells’ shot has continued to fail him recently, as he shot only 38% from the field over the last week, but his defense has allowed him to garner some clutch minutes with the Grizzlies. Their last three games have come down to clutch situations and Wells has been tasked with defending the best scorer on the other team to finish.
He succeeded against the Minnesota Timberwolves, holding Anthony Edwards to 15 points on 4-13 shooting. Houston’s Jalen Green was a different beast as he scored 42 points, including the go-ahead bucket, with under one minute to play on Monday night against the Grizzlies.
Jaylen Wells continues to be one of the surprising and best rookies in the NBA this season on both ends of the court. While the Grizzlies continue their search for a veteran wing to help their championship status this season, Wells figures to be a part of the rotation regardless of what move the Grizzlies can make or not make.

Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Josh Newton got a letter from the NFL, but not the good kind. Newton received a fine following the Bengals’ Week 17 win over the Denver Broncos.
Newton was fined $4,885 for “unsportsmanlike conduct (violent gesture)” following a Bo Nix pass that landed incomplete. The broadcast did not show Newton’s gesture, so we aren’t quite sure what it was.
In addition, Broncos safety PJ Locke was fined $13,972 for illegal use of his helmet during a hit on Bengals tight end Mike Gesicki.
Earlier this season, Andrei Iosivas was fined for a “violent gesture” after mimicking a bow and arrow after a Week 2 touchdown. Wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase received a fine for the same offense following Week 5 and Cam Taylor-Britt received one after Week 15’s win at the Tennessee Titans.
Chase appealed his fine, but it was ruled that the penalty would stand.
Newton will likely appeal his as well.
Another Bengal gets a letter from the NFL, so hopefully, there’s no more of that tonight against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

A tumultuous rookie season for Cleveland Browns rookie Mike Hall Jr. ended on a frustrating note in the team’s season finale.
Hall suffered what appears to be a serious knee injury early in the third quarter of the team’s Week 18 matchup with the Baltimore Ravens. Hall was engaged with Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum on a second-and-nine play, that saw Lamar Jackson complete a pass to tight end Isaiah Likely for a first down. As the play developed, Hall seemed to get his legs tied up with other players around him and quickly fell to turf, clutching at his knee.
After receiving attention on the field, the Browns training staff eventually called for the cart to come out, applied an aircast to his leg and escorted him off the locker room.
Hall’s rookie campaign hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing for the Ohio State product. Before the season began, he found himself placed on the Commissioner’s Exempt List after being arrested for a domestic dispute at his home with the mother of his child. He wound up pleading no contest to get the charges reduced, avoided jail time and paid a fine. After missing the first four weeks on the list, he wound up receiving a five-game suspension with time served from the league, resulting in him missing one final game before making his NFL debut in Week 6.
He played the next four games for Cleveland before suffering a knee injusy in Week 9 against the Chargers and ending up on the IR. After missing the next four games, Hall returned for a Week 16 matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Now his season ends on another somber note, with another knee injury, and a potentially more serious one to rehab this offseason.

BALTIMORE — Browns rookie defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. was carted off the field early in the third quarter of Saturday’s game in Baltimore with a right leg injury. His leg was placed in an air cast.
He was ruled out with a knee injury.
The injury occurred on a second-down completion from Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson to tight end Isaiah Likely with 13:25 remaining in the quarter.
Hall immediately went down after appearing to get his legs caught up while rushing and grabbed at his right leg.
The Browns selected Hall, a Northeast Ohio native, with the 54th pick in the 2024 draft.
He also missed four games this season with a knee injury, which occurred in practice leading up to the Browns’ game in New Orleans in Week 11.

The Cleveland Browns suffered a devastating blow in their Week 12 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens as rookie cornerback Greg Newsome II was carted off the field with a right leg injury.
