CHICAGO — Derrick Rose knew he’d be unable to hold back tears, so he figured why try?
“That’s why I had to wear the glasses, because I knew I was going to get emotional,” Rose said Thursday at a private screening of “Becoming a Rose,” the self-directed retirement film from the former Chicago Bulls star.
The two-minute tribute will debut during a halftime ceremony honoring Rose at Saturday’s Bulls game against the New York Knicks. It will be the apex of an evening reserved for the Chicago native and 2011 NBA MVP who announced his retirement in September. The Bulls have dubbed the matchup “Derrick Rose Night.”

Players on both teams will wear themed shooting shirts to honor Rose’s time with both franchises. The date of the game will be numerically printed on the front (1.4.25), and the shirts will include Rose’s jersey numbers worn with the Bulls, Knicks and at Simeon Career Academy. The Bulls, his first NBA team, will launch the Derrick Rose atrium experience, showcasing everything from memorabilia to a mosaic in the shape of Rose’s logo and made using photos throughout his life and career.
Throughout the game, there will be moments recognizing Rose, his family and many of his former Bulls teammates who will be on hand. Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson also proclaimed Jan. 4, 2025, as “Derrick Rose Day” in Chicago.
“I can’t explain it,” Rose said. “That’s something that you see in movies, or I’m normally on the couch watching somebody get this.”
But the culmination of Rose’s coronation will be different. At a time when all the attention will be heaped on Rose, he went out of his way to redirect the flowers back to his beloved hometown. What fans will see Saturday is a heartfelt tribute video not to Rose, but to the city of Chicago. With his eldest son, PJ, narrating and co-starring, Rose and his team, in conjunction with Adidas, crafted a touching salute to the people and places in Chicago that made him.
“Roses need water and sunlight to grow, but this Rose needed a city,” PJ narrates at the start of the film.
“I want the city to feel like they can stunt on another city or state and be, like, ‘Look what we got. Look what we made,’” Rose said. “Because it’s no way that I could tell my story without telling the city’s story.”
Rose is the rarest of all sports heroes: a prospect who, against long odds, grew to become the youngest MVP in NBA history for his hometown team. He spent his first eight seasons in Chicago after the Bulls drafted him No. 1 in 2008. The player nicknamed “Pooh” by his grandmother when he was a child won Rookie of the Year in 2009, earned three All-Star selections by 2012 and guided the Bulls to the Eastern Conference finals in 2011 before knee injuries derailed his career.

“Pooh’s as special as they come,” former Bulls star and Rose’s friend Joakim Noah told The Athletic. “When that crowd (Saturday) is going to chant ‘MVP,’ it’s bigger than just basketball. It’s just beautiful to see how far he’s come. This story is about more than just winning a championship. This is a painful story. This is as soulful as they come. This is a Chicago story.”

“Becoming a Rose” takes the audience on an intimate journey with Rose and his family, snaking from the United Center to his childhood home on the city’s south side, and back. In between, Rose shows his son Murray Park — not just a playground, but Rose’s prove-it-ground — as well as the halls and gymnasium of Simeon, where he led his high school team to back-to-back state championships. Rose also shows his son the old barbershop on the block, where so many boys became men.
“Whenever we see athletes and we see their retirement video, it’s always about them,” said Carlyle Garrick, director of the tribute. “It’s videos and stories, highlights and plays, that we’ve seen forever, and we’re just rewatching those for the 30th time. But it was nice to see his family, his friends and places that were special to him. Hearing PJ’s voice also gave it that familial texture.”
The film took three days to shoot in early December. On the first day of filming, the crew was welcomed by 22-degree temperatures. Reflecting on the frigid conditions, it’s the only time Rose didn’t express anything but reverence for Chicago.
“It was so cold out there, bro,” Rose remembered. “When I came back, I was so cold I had to put on tights under my long johns. And my guys were regular, like, ‘What?’ They were laughing at me. But it made me appreciate being here, because something as minute as that can help build your character if you’re mindful of it.”
Garrick, a California native who played linebacker at Oregon from 2011-15, said it was the coldest he’s ever been. He also will remember Rose’s commitment to the project resulting in one of the fastest turnarounds he’s been a part of. Garrick said productions of this magnitude typically take about three months.
Storytelling through film is one of Rose’s many passions. He described himself as a visual learner, and “Becoming a Rose” is his directorial debut. Rose additionally is manifesting a partnership at a major studio. Rose listed Quentin Tarantino among his favorite directors and said he envisions featuring family members prominently in his films one day.
“A quiet kid with a loud dream.”
Garrick’s respect for Rose grew more after experiencing the latter approach a new craft. He said Rose joined every video call with a notepad and a camera, determined to learn the process while offering critical creative input. From the overall concept to every painstaking detail of production, Rose was involved.
“I’m watching every step so that when I am in that position, I can express myself the way a great director is supposed to express themselves,” Rose said.
He’ll never stop being a student of the game.
“That’s why I feel like this film is an authentic view of who Derrick is and who this city is,” Garrick said. “He’s investing into all of us, himself as well, and proving to people that ‘I really care about this craft.’ He might not say it, but he is truly leading this charge. It’s a special thing to see somebody post-playing care about something this much so early.”
For Rose, it’s about using his massive platform and putting a twist on his community outreach, just like it was always bigger than basketball for Rose during his playing career.
“Of course, you can express yourself, art wise, through film. But at the same time, we’re trying to employ people, too,” Rose said. “We could shoot this film, and we could have used everybody from different cities and fly them in, but we used people who were from here. A lot of us were (Black and Brown people) on the set working. That’s where I see us, our team, adapting: giving in different ways, finding unique ways to show gratitude.
“When you look at the economy and really think practically about what’s going on and how people are hurting, coming back here and just seeing the visual, certain places still look the same. Every year I’m going to come back, it may still look the same. I’m going to say that for the next 10, 20 years The question is going to come up, ‘Who’s going to change it?’ I’ll answer the question: It’s going to be me. It’s going to have to be me or my team to change it. Taking responsibility, taking ownership in it … but doing it smart and doing it the right way by employing people and giving people opportunities.”
“A rose can be many colors. But this Rose will always be Chicago red.”
The final scene shows Rose sharing the United Center court with only his eldest son, now far removed from the toddler who stole hearts while sitting atop Rose’s lap after playoff games. Together, they launch shots in an empty arena. Rose sinks a basket and hoists his arms in celebration. A faint chant of “M-V-P” plays as the film fades out.
For all he did for Chicago, and for all he meant then and still does now, the roar Rose receives Saturday is expected to be deafening after fans see his carefully curated tribute to the place he’ll always call home.
“This is going to represent a Chicago feel, a Chicago way, of presenting ourselves to the world,” Rose said. “It’s all intrinsic. It’s all real, and I hope you guys love it.”

A gig is always made better when an artist looks like they want to be there. When you see Slash perform, you can rest easily knowing that you’re enjoying yourself, watching someone play who is having equally good a time. Slash has always been committed to his music and dedicated to life on the road, which can be seen not only through his work with Guns N’ Roses but also his work on other projects.
“I’m a road guy. That’s why the pandemic was such a shock,” said Slash, discussing how much time he dedicates to life on the road. “I’d say I spend probably 85 per cent of my time touring and have done for as long as I can remember – since 1985 or ’86. And that’s what I love to do.”
The Guns N’ Roses guitarist continued: “People think I’m crazy because the older I get, the more I love touring – it’s, like, the more exciting it is for me… But a lot of it is because of the simple fact that I love guitar playing, and my favourite venue for actually playing is live as opposed to being in the studio or being at home. So if I really wanna get off on guitar playing, I’ve gotta go out on tour.”
Even when Guns N’ Roses split up, what seemed like a massive blow to one of the biggest hard rock bands on the planet was swiftly met with a range of side projects that Slash put forward in a bid to get back on the road. These included recording solo music with a range of different artists, playing in Velvet Revolver and forming the supergroup Slash’s Snakepit.
Given how much emphasis Slash places on going out on the road, it’s unsurprising to hear that he measures success based on the size of the venues he plays. Given that he loves performing, the more people adamant about seeing him, the better his career will be going. This was the case when he was playing in Guns N’ Roses, and they started performing in arenas for the first time, which he described as the band’s peak.
Interestingly, his love for live music means that he is sometimes hesitant to play in huge venues, which seems counterintuitive. Playing anywhere bigger than an arena, such as a huge festival or football stadium, notoriously comes with sound problems. As such, Slash lives in an awkward constant contradiction, where he wants to play in bigger venues but doesn’t want to succumb to the logistical problems of performing in them.
“I was surprised when my manager said that we were going to be doing venues like Wembley Arena, but it’s been a nice steady ascent from where we started to where we are now; we didn’t pay anyone off or anything,” he concluded. “So we’ll see how all that goes; I don’t wanna be in any big huge places too much. I remember playing Wembley Arena with Guns N’ Roses back in the day, and that was, like, the peak of where you want to be. You know, beyond that, it starts to become complicated.”

Guns N’ Roses is a legendary rock band that has played countless exhilarating concerts throughout their career. However, there is one particular concert that even Slash, their iconic guitarist, has deemed as the peak of their performance.

The situation escalated quickly, with fans becoming unruly and violent. The chaos culminated in a full-blown riot, with fans destroying property and causing mayhem throughout the venue.
Despite the tumultuous events of that night, Slash has stated in interviews that he believes the energy and intensity of that performance was unparalleled. He has referred to it as the peak of Guns N’ Roses’ career, a moment where the band’s raw talent and rebellious spirit shone brightest.
While the “Riot at Riverport” may not have been a typical concert experience, it remains a defining moment in the history of Guns N’ Roses. It serves as a reminder of the band’s ability to captivate and incite passion in their fans, even in the most tumultuous of circumstances.

Ron Thal, aka Bumblefoot, is one of the most respected guitar players around. That much is evident in the guest list on his new album: Guthrie Govan, Steve Vai, and Brian May.
The album is titled …Returns!
It’s a heady cocktail of quasi-industrial, futuristic-sounding instrumental metal with flourishes of grandiose guitar badassery.
And it’s out on 24 January 2025.
Bumblefoot is of course best known for his tenure in Guns N’ Roses during that long period when Slash was out of the band. He worked with singer Axl Rose on the album Chinese Democracy, and is credited for playing on every one of that album’s 14 tracks.
Right off the bat, he tells MusicRadar that he doesn’t like to talk about his time with GN’R – but he does eventually, with a little gentle prodding.
He’s much happier talking about his new album, his guitar heroes, and the pure joy of playing…
What guitar did you learn on?
“It was a kid-sized, nylon string, no-name practice guitar. After that, I had a copy of a Les Paul by Pace. I’ve never seen another Pace guitar on this planet since! I don’t know where this thing came from or who made it, but it looked like a sunburst Les Paul. I got it when I was eight, and that was my guitar!”
In your early days, what guitar was the game-changer for you?
“It was a 1983 Ibanez Roadstar. Finally, I had a guitar I could play Van Halen and Ozzy songs on. Before that, I had gotten a Fender Stratocaster, but it just didn’t have the balls I was looking for. I was an old-school metalhead, so I needed something with a [tremolo] bar that really drove harder. I think I put a Floyd Rose on the Ibanez, and I toured and recorded with it for about 13 years.
Which guitarist is your biggest influence?
“You’ve got Hendrix, Brian May, and everyone from every cool band of the ’60s and ’70s. Definitely Angus Young and Yngwie [Malmsteen], of course. But my main influence has to be Eddie Van Halen. There was guitar before him, and then there was guitar after him.
“There’s time periods that you can measure, and before Van Halen there was a lot of reckless, Angus Young, bluesy kind of playing. Then Van Halen experimented, and there was a lot of what you can do unconventionally. It was exploratory.”
In terms of technique, what was the last new trick you learned?
“A lot of my tricks are old! But on my new album […Returns!], there’s an acoustic intro thing that’s me doing my bullshit version of flamenco because I can’t play flamenco. I do a thing where it’s sort of a banjo roll, and I take off my fingers, pull off onto the open string and quickly hammer it back down.
“So, you’re picking the fourth string, plucking the second string with your second finger, plucking the first sting quickly, and then lifting off your fretting finger that’s on the second string to pull off onto the open string and hammering the note back down. You’re getting these five notes.”
What was the last piece of gear that you were excited about?
“There’s two. The first is the DigiTech JamMan [Solo] HD looper. It has a ton of saveable loops; you can have hours of loops in this thing. It has excellent audio quality, so it’s an excellent looper. The other is the DigiTech FreqOut [Natural Feedback Creator]. It simulates amp feedback, like when you’re just going up, facing the amp, and holding the note. It starts building it into feedback and has all these settings where you can control the harmonic, or it could be random, and you control the swoops in the level. You can also use it as a momentary switch.”
How much do you practice now?
“My guitar is always within arm’s reach. I’ll spend 10 hours a day in front of the computer mixing albums for a band when I’m producing and thinking to myself, ‘Okay, in five minutes, I’m going to take a break and do some playing.’ And then, 10 hours pass, and it’s like, ‘Okay, tomorrow, I’ll play.’ I could end up going weeks without touching a guitar.
“It’s really shameful. That needs to change. I really do need to play more. It’s not helping my hands anymore.
“In the old days, I lived every free moment playing guitar. I’d have lessons, I’d be practicing, I’d be writing. And then I’d drop the needle on an album and play along until I figured it out. By doing that, I built up a great sense of intuition for where a song is going.”
As a player, do you have any bad habits?
“Oh, a lot of them! I sit down too much. When I go to play standing up, my wrist isn’t used to it and everything in my fingers feels weak. I need to play more standing up.
“When you’re sitting down and slouching over the guitar, it’s comfortable. But when you stand up and the guitar is down by your crotch, you have to grab it very differently. I lose a lot of dexterity, so that’s something I need to practice because I don’t do it enough.”
Is there anything you can’t play that you’d like to?
“Basketball! But definitely half of Jeff Watson’s solos from Night Ranger’s songs. People don’t realise how unconventional he was. His fingerpicking and tapping was just insane. He showed me a lot of solos, and I still can’t play them after all these years!”
What technique did you have to work the hardest to master?
“Economy picking. That took a while to get comfortable with. But once it’s a part of your playing, it’s very natural. So, just getting used to it was the thing—also, singing and playing at the same time.”
What is the one song or performance that you’re most proud of?
“My last album, Little Brother is Watching, was one where I was happy with everything about it. The songs, arrangements, recording, and production were exactly what I wanted them to be. And now, with my new album, …Returns!, I’m happy with the sound of it. With everything, I have no complaints.”
What is your favourite song on Chinese Democracy?
“The song I’m most proud of playing on is Shackler’s Revenge. I feel like I contributed a lot more to that song than some of the others. From the crazy guitar solos to the tapping stuff at the end over the last chorus, that song kept me very busy. And it was a lot of fun to play live, especially co-ordinating singing backing vocals as well as doing all of the crazy tapping patterns at the end of the song. It’s a very fun song to play.
“But I will say that Shackler’s Revenge was already written – and Buckethead [another featured guitarist on Chinese Democracy] was already out of the band. I believe he is the one that wrote a good chunk of that song, so I was putting icing on a cake that already existed by the time I joined the band.”
How did you come up with riffs and solos with GN’R?
“By experimenting with different ideas in the studio. I was with Caram Costanzo, who was engineering and producing, and he was very hands-on in the studio every day. We’d spend a good 14 hours a day just trying different directions and approaches and seeing would fit best.”
Was it inspiring for you to work with Axl?
“I’m not gonna talk too much about Guns N’ Roses. And especially not about Axl. It only leads to turmoil and torment on my end.”
Have you ever felt like you’d failed as a player or felt embarrassed by a performance?
“I feel that every time I’m onstage! I really do. Every time I play, most of the time, I walk off the stage depressed, feeling like I’ve let myself down, let the audience down, that I could have done better, that I wasn’t focused, and that I wasn’t connected to the music. And the more shows I do, the more suicidally depressed I get. So, pretty much all of them!”
And a final word for guitar players out there?
