  • Ridley Scott’s 71% Rotten Tomatoes Legacy Sequel Just Defeated the Original in Another Key Way

After premiering just before Thanksgiving last year, Gladiator 2 was one of the biggest movies of the year, earning over $450 million at the worldwide box office to narrowly pass the original, although not as much as Paramount executives were likely hoping for. After debuting on digital platforms around Christmas and seeing a dual run in theaters and on VOD, Gladiator 2 finally hit streaming last week, and to no one’s surprise, the film has been an instant hit. Gladiator 2 currently occupies the #1 spot on Paramount+ at the time of writing, even edging out the original Gladiator which sits at #3 at the time of writing. Gladiator 2 earned scores of 71% from critics and 82% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, lower than the original but still respectable.

Original Gladiator director Ridley Scott also returned to helm the sequel, with Peter Craig and David Scarpa penning the script for David Franzoni receiving writing credit as well for his work on the original Gladiator. Scott has been making blockbuster movies for the better part of 50 years now; one of his earliest works is also his most famous. In 1977, Scott directed Alien, the hit sci-fi horror thriller that was such a hit that the franchise is still going to this day. Scott is also known for his work on Blade Runner, the 1982 sci-fi film starring Harrison Ford, but he passed directorial duties off to Denis Villeneuve for the sequel, Blade Runner 2049, which also brought Ryan Gosling into the cast. Scott is also famous for his work on The Martian, the 2015 sci-fi thriller starring Matt Damon that’s based on the novel by Andy Weir.

If you’ve watched both Gladiator movies on Paramount+ but are still looking for something else to dive into, look no further than Top Gun: Maverick, the 2022 smash hit aerial action film starring Tom Cruise that earned over $1 billion at the worldwide box office and was an international sensation. Mel Gibson‘s Braveheart, which won him Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director, is also one of the more popular movies on Paramount+, along with Transformers One, the animated Transformers flick starring Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson that was released last year.

Gladiator 2 stars Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington and was directed by Ridley Scott. Stay tuned to Collider for future streaming updates and watch Gladiator 2 on Paramount+.

Netflix has added season 2 of The Recruit, which again stars Noah Centineo as young CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks, who is thrown into a new daredevil mission in South Korea.

Yes, rather than doing the normal TV thing of placing an FBI agent at the heart of the action like the gigantic hit The Night Agent, the first series of The Recruit took the quirky decision to stick a lawyer into a conspiracy thriller.

That decision split audiences and critics, with viewers giving it an 84% Rotten Tomatoes score while it only managed a 68% critic score. The Roger Ebert review described watching Owen navigating Langley as being “about as much fun as paperwork”. However, many viewers liked its “tongue-in-cheek style” and became hooked by a “fantastic show”.

A still from Netflix's The Recruit season 2

Watching The Recruit we think if you like the central character then you’re likely to find yourself being quickly immersed in the first series and now the second season has dropped on Netflix, which will come just at the right time for loads of people who’ve crashed through The Night Agent season 2. OK, spoilers ahead if you’ve not seen season 1.

The spy drama’s new six-part run picks up up straight after season’s 1 finale, with Owen kidnapped by Nichka, aka Karolina (Maddie Hasson), the daughter of rogue Russian asset Max Meladze (Laura Haddock) whom he thought was dead. But after a last-minute rescue operation and orders to stay put in his office, the stakes continue to rise for the risk-loving lawyer when a cryptic note from Korea lands on his desk. Owen convinces his boss Walter Nyland (Vondie Curtis-Hall) to send him to Seoul, where he lived as a child when his father was stationed there.

“Owen’s headspace is in complete chaos after witnessing Max, the former CI asset who he almost died multiple times trying to protect, get shot by her daughter,” says Noah Centineo. “But while Korea carries a heavy weight for him. It also brings back sweet memories from his childhood. It’s fertile ground for the vicious and life-threatening fun Owen loves to find himself in the middle of.”

The plot sees Owen team up with South Korean National Intelligence Service agent Jang Kyun (Teo Yoo) and he begins to suspect there could be a threat within the CIA itself. A string of new characters are introduced in season 2 including intelligence officer Grace (Young-Ah Kim), senior US diplomat Tom Wallace (Felix Solis) and businessman Oliver Bonner-Jones (James Purefoy).

The Recruit seasons 1 and 2 are on Netflix globally now.

If you haven’t heard of The Night Agent yet, now is the perfect time to start watching! This quirky thriller has just released its second season on Netflix, and it’s already receiving rave reviews with an impressive 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

I recently binged all of the episodes and I have to say, this show is a must-watch for any fan of suspenseful dramas. The cast is phenomenal, the plot twists are unexpected, and the writing is top-notch.

So if you’re looking for your next binge-worthy series, look no further than The Night Agent on Netflix. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!

  • Christian Bale and Matt Damon Put the Pedal to the Metal in This 92% Rotten Tomatoes Film Zooming Onto a Free Streamer Next Month

Over the last few years, those who love a fast car or a solid biographical racing drama have been in luck. From titles like Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story to Ferrari and the upcoming Joseph Kosinski-helmed F1 movie, it’s a good time to be a racing fan. Soon, audiences will be able to wave the flag and guide in another recent classic that pitted two different vehicle manufacturers against one another. Beginning February 1, Tubi invites viewers to pull up to the platform and stream James Mangold’s 2019 sports biography pic, Ford v Ferrari. Starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale, there’s never been a better time to feel the wind in your hair as the feature lands on the free streaming service.

Based on a true story, Ford v Ferrari follows Carroll Shelby’s (Damon) race against time to build a race car that will compete and win against the highly-revered Italian racing team, Scuderia Ferrari, at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Shelby has been hired by the Ford company to piece together a machine that has the power to take on its Italian rival, but the vehicle can only carry the American company so far as they’ll also need a talented driver behind the wheel. For this, the Ford team turns to Ken Miles (Bale), an English driver who has enough promise to take home the gold. As the clock ticks down towards the race, the pressure spikes for the entire team as they attempt to take on the best of the best at the big event in France.

    ‘Ford v Ferrari’s Pit Crew

Joining the two leading men in this story of hope, sportsmanship, and determination is a lineup that includes Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead), Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place), Caitríona Balfe (Outlander), Josh Lucas (Sweet Home Alabama), Ray McKinnon (Knox Goes Away), Tracy Letts (Lady Bird) and Remo Girone (Live by Night). As one might expect, a lot of money needs to be poured into a racing-based movie in order for it to look on point and not cheap. For that, 20th Century Fox shelled out well over $97 million for the film’s production, with its box office earnings easily covering it at $225.5 million. Not just a financial success, but the title was also a favorite with the critics, landing the Certified Fresh rating of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and nabbing four nominations at the Oscars, crossing the finish line for Best Film Editing and Best Sound Editing.

If you enjoyed Mangold’s latest box office favorite, A Complete Unknown, head over to Tubi on February 1 to stream the director’s dip into the sports arena when Ford v. Ferrari crosses the finish line.

  • Mel Gibson And Mark Wahlberg’s New Movie ‘Flight Risk’ Crashes And Burns On Rotten Tomatoes

Ever since I saw the first trailer for Flight Risk, I’ve been a little conflicted. I like the idea of a really stripped down thriller with just three characters. I like the idea of the whole thing taking place inside a plane.

On the other hand, the trailer wasn’t very good and gave away too much. I’ve embedded the trailer below and I strongly urge you to avoid watching it if you have plans to see this movie. I despise trailers that give away such a huge amount of the plot.

The story takes place on a small plane as a U.S. Marshal, Madelyn Harris (Michelle Dockery of Downtown Abbey fame) escorts a government witness (Topher Grace of That 70’s Show who I genuinely didn’t recognize with the glasses) to testify at the trial of a mob boss. They discover along the way that—spoilers!—the pilot (played by Mark Wahlberg in his first real villain role since 1996’s Fear) is actually the assassin. Things go from bad to worse.

Then there is the fact that this is a film directed by Mel Gibson. Setting aside the various controversies that have plagued the actor and all the bizarre and sometimes racist things he’s said, I have a real appreciation for a lot of Gibson’s work. Braveheart came out years before Gibson became a Hollywood pariah and it remains to this day one of my favorite movies. He also directed the excellent thriller, Apocalypto, set during the peak—and near the fall—of the Mayan civilization. Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge was also great. He’s a talented director.

To direct a film like Flight Risk feels like a real step in the wrong direction, especially since (according to the vast bulk of reviews at this point) it’s not very good. To go from historical epics like Braveheart to this feels kind of sad. Sadder than Gibson’s acting career, even, which is far from his glory days of Lethal Weapon, Hamlet and Conspiracy Theory, or even his earlier work in films like A Year Of Living Dangerously or Gallipoli.

In any case, the film is—as of this writing—at 25% on Rotten Tomatoes. Certifiably rotten, in other words. Here’s a sampling of reviews:

Variety’s Todd Gilchrist calls the film a “crude, unimaginative, suspenseless adventure whose tension mostly derives from deciding which of its three main characters will prove the most unlikable by the time it ends.”

The Globe and Mail’s Barry Hertz writes, “A C-grade thriller that is further dumbed down to dunce-cap calibre, Flight Risk might have worked as an enjoyably grimy piece of genre trash had Gibson not made every single wrong directorial decision along the way.”

Others blame the script rather than Gibson’s direction. “To be fair, Jared Rosenberg’s witless screenplay has several stretches that no director could make exciting, or even minimally endurable,” The Wall Street Journal’s Zachary Barnes writes.

Alissa Wilkinson of The New York Times agrees, noting “Where “Flight Risk” fails as a film is not really Gibson’s fault. He knows how to shoot action sequences. The screenplay is instead all over the place, in a way that feels tired and halfhearted.”

Not all critics agree that it’s a total plane-wreck, however. The Hollywood Reporter’s Frank Scheck is one of the few to offer up a “Fresh” rating for the film. “You’ll be shaking your head at the sheer ludicrousness of it all,” he writes, “But it’s a pretty good bet that you haven’t once felt the desire to look at your phone.”

The Daily Telegraph’s Robbie Collin notes that the film’s plot is stupid but “it’s methodically, even artisanally stupid, built in accordance with the classic thriller rules. Every twist plays fair, no matter how outlandish.”

Emma Stefansky over at IGN is also upbeat about Flight Risk, writing “The character types are familiar and the story is simple, but there’s enough panache to keep it in the air right up until its explosive ending.”

It sounds pretty rough, and even the positive reviews note that there are a lot of problems with the humor, dialogue and voice-performances from characters off-screen, but I do genuinely hope that every airline includes this as an in-flight option going forward. And who knows? Maybe it’s fun, warts and all. It’s just a very peculiar choice for Mel Gibson.

And also, what on earth were they thinking with Mark Wahlberg’s hair? I don’t think this is how hairlines actually work.

Mel Gibson and Mark Wahlberg’s much-anticipated new movie ‘Flight Risk’ has officially crashed and burned on Rotten Tomatoes. The film, which was touted as a high-flying action-thriller, has been met with scathing reviews from critics and audiences alike.

Despite the star power of Gibson and Wahlberg, ‘Flight Risk’ failed to take off with viewers, earning a dismal 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have panned the film for its lackluster plot, wooden performances, and uninspired action sequences.

Many moviegoers have taken to social media to express their disappointment with ‘Flight Risk,’ with some calling it one of the worst films of the year. One Twitter user wrote, “I can’t believe I wasted my money on ‘Flight Risk.’ What a disaster of a movie.”

It seems that even the combined talents of Gibson and Wahlberg couldn’t save ‘Flight Risk’ from crashing and burning on Rotten Tomatoes. It looks like this film will be one that both actors will want to forget as quickly as possible.

  • Channing Tatum’s 75% Rotten Tomatoes Thriller Is an Instant Hit on Prime Video

Fans are loving Channing Tatum’s villainous turn in Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut Blink Twice. The thriller had a great response at the box office during its brief release window, and now it has got another warm response on streaming. The movie has just made its debut on Prime Video and has quickly risen to #2 worldwide, according to Flix Patrol.

The movie co-written by Kravitz and E.T. Feigenbaum, is garnering a lot of appreciation for elaborating on the themes such as gaslighting, power dynamics, and assault. Audiences go on a twisted ride of unsettling paranoia-driven horror in Blink Twice, as it further digs into dynamics like power imbalance and financial privilege. The movie has a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with appreciation for Kravitz’s vision, the film’s various performances, and its captivating storytelling.

Blink Twice follows cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie), who meets tech billionaire, Slater King (Tatum), at his fundraising gala. When he invites her to join him and his friends for a dream vacation on his private island, wild nights soon blend into sun-soaked days. But things take a turn when strange things start to happen, Frida must uncover the truth if she hopes to make it out alive. Do note that the movie comes with a trigger warning, as the film deals directly with sexual violence. Speaking to Collider, Kravitz divulged the essence of the movie:

“It was less of an idea and more of a feeling to start with. I don’t know if you know the original title of the film, which is Pussy Island, but wanting to explore power and taking back power — specifically that word and what we’ve come to feel when we hear that word — and wanting to really explore how absurd it is that women are asked to forget and pretend and smile through pain and speak with our eyes because we can’t say it out loud and really wanting to highlight how insane that is and tiring and fucked up.”

The movie stars Ackie as Frida, Tatum as Slater King, Alia Shawkat as Jess, Christian Slater as Vic, Simon Rex as Cody, Adria Arjona as Sarah, Haley Joel Osment as Tom, Liz Caribel as Camilla, and Levon Hawke as Lucas. Further rounding off the cast are Trew Mullen, Geena Davis, Kyle MacLachlan, Cris Costa, María Elena Olivares, Saul Williams, Tiffany Persons, Aaron Himelstein, and Kravitz.

Blink Twice is streaming on Prime Video. You can check out the trailer above and stay tuned to Collider for more such updates.

  • Kristen Stewart Took on the Royal Family in This 83% Rotten Tomatoes Film Coming To Streaming

Following her spike into the limelight with The Twilight Saga, there were some who claimed that Kristen Stewart would never be able to step out from the shadow of Bella Swan. But time and time again, the actress has proved the haters wrong. And, while she’s appeared in a slew of beloved cinematic favorites since The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 arrived in theaters more than a decade ago, it was with her 2021 historical drama, Spencer, through which she fully proved herself as a force to be reckoned with. Next month, Netflix is inviting audiences to see the film that earned Stewart an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, as the royal family-centered mind-bending film will make its way onto the platform on February 8.

Helmed by Pablo Larraín (Jackie), Spencer takes your run-of-the-mill historical drama and flips it on its head. The film follows Diana, Princess of Wales (Stewart), during the holiday season of 1991. It captures her dedication to her two young sons, Prince Harry (Freddie Spry) and Prince William (Jack Nielen), while she struggles to come to terms with her husband, Prince Charles’ (Jack Farthing) affair with Camilla Parker Bowles (Emma Darwall-Smith). Most of the picture takes place at the royal family’s Christmas hideaway, the Sandringham House in Norfolk, which is the neighboring manor to Princess Diana’s childhood home, Park House. The movie captures Diana’s vulnerable spiral as past, present, and future all collide while she’s on a nightmare holiday with her in-laws.

Audiences and Critics Were Split on ‘Spencer’

Penned by Peaky Blinders creator, Steven Knight, the film is one of many to come from helmer Larraín who added the beloved Princess of Wales to his cinematic collection of strong women in power. The world has long had a collective obsession for the gone-too-soon Princess, with all eyes set on Spencer when it arrived in theaters back in 2021. Boasting a Certified Fresh critics’ score of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film missed the mark with everyday audiences, landing a 52% approval rating. The biopic certainly won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, with plenty of trippy moments and parallels to Anne Boleyn, as well as some over-the-top impression work performed by Stewart. Still, the movie made big enough waves with the right people that it earned its star her first and only Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

Decide if you fall on the side of audiences or critics when Spencer takes its place alongside Netflix’s sprawling lineup of content on February 8.

Rotten Tomatoes Predicts the 2025 Golden Globes Winners

The Golden Globes will be handed out on Sunday, January 5, honoring 2024’s best film and TV — according to them, anyway. The newly formed voting body of 300 comprises programmers and seasoned journalists, which means we are still feeling the group out on taste and tendencies. Still, early indications have given us a hint of where they might send the most votes.

This year’s Golden Globe winners are going to be noteworthy not only because of their primetime placement at the beginning of the year, but moreover for the fact that they will be the first contest to decide many head-to-head matchups that we think will be mirrored by the Oscar nominations coming later this month and other contests.

Check out our picks for the Golden Globes winners, and let us know who you think will be a winner in the comments.

    Best Motion Picture – Drama

    What will win?

    93%

    Conclave
    (2024)

    Why?
The Brutalist is an incredible film and likely deserves to win, but Conclave sits better with the taste of their group. Remember The Fabelmans won over Tar, Oppenheimer over Killers of the Flower Moon, and 1917 over The Irishman. Conclave just makes more sense to appeal to the larger group, even with that polarizing ending.

Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

    What will win?

    94%

    Anora
    (2024)

    Why?

Simply put, Wicked is funnier and more musical, but Anora is the clear global favorite.

Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy

    Mikey Madison in Anora (2025)

    Who will win?

    Mikey Madison,

    Anora
    (2024)

    Why?

Cynthia Erivo slayed in Wicked, but the Anora momentum is a bit too difficult to argue against.

Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama

    Who will win?

    Adrien Brody,

    The Brutalist
    (2024)

    Why?

Sometimes the most acting wins. At 3.5 hours, it is hard to argue that the work Brody put into this one equals anything else. Sorry, Timmy. Lord knows you will be back.

Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama

    Who will win?

    Nicole Kidman,

    Babygirl
    (2024)

    Why?

Call us crazy for this one, but the Globes are historically extra, and you can call Nicole Kidman in Babygirl a lot of things, but you can’t say the role is not extra. Also, Kidman has had 17 Globe nominations and five wins across three decades. The Globes like her, they really, really like her.

Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy

    Who will win?

    Hugh Grant,

    Heretic
    (2024)

    Why?

Rolling the dice on this one. The Globes historically don’t go for horror or Hugh Grant outside of his win in 1995 for Four Weddings and a Funeral, but of the assorted nominees, he seems the one best able to garner full support. Many have Jesse Eisenberg, but to put it plainly, as brilliant as he is, A Real Pain is not something we haven’t seen him do before. The Globes LOVE rewarding an actor who is doing something new, and Hugh Grant in Heretic is deliciously new.

Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture

    Ariana Grande in Wicked (2024)

(Photo by Courtesy of Universal Pictures)

    Who will win?

    Ariana Grande,

    Wicked
    (2024)

    Why?

Emilia Perez is transcendent, and Zoe Saldana is spectacular, but this is Ari’s moment. We are holding space all season for it, and this win should be the first one to solidify her upcoming run.

Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture

Denzel Washington in Gladiator II (2024)

    Who will win?

    Denzel Washington,

    Gladiator II
    (2024)

    Why?

In the end, we picked Washington for the same reasons why RDJ won over Gosling in 2023 and Angela Bassett won over Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu in 2022: history, director, and pedigree.

    Best Director

    Who will win?

    Brady Corbet,

    The Brutalist
    (2024)

    Why?

Although many, including us, have praised Sean Baker’s direction, editing, and screenplay for Anora, The Brutalist is just too impressive to deny.

    Best Screenplay – Motion Picture

Margaret Qualley in The Substance (2025)

    Who will win?

    90%

    The Substance
    (2024)

    Why?

There is a very plausible scenario where Anora wins here, but The Substance seems to be peaking at just the right moment, so we will board the train.

Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language

Selena Gomez in Emilia Perez (2025)

    What will win?

    76%

    Emilia Perez
    (2024)

    Why?

    Is it even a question?

    Best Motion Picture – Animated

    What will win?

    97%

    Flow
    (2024)

    Why?

The Wild Robot is arguably the better Animated feature, and it comes in with three impressive nominations, but Globes rarely choose the conventional choice in this category.

Best Original Score – Motion Picture

Mike Faist, Zendaya, and Josh O'Connor in Challengers (2024)

(Photo by Courtesy of Amazon MGM)

    What will win?

    88%

    Challengers
    (2024)

    Why?

Challengers should win, but the fact that means The Wild Robot won’t is nothing short of a tragedy.

    Why?

One of the Emilia Perez songs is the clear choice; Zoe Saldana kills it on “El Mal,” but “Mi Camino” is just a better listen. Challengers could stun here with a win, but we feel safe picking the grand musical.

  • The Two Perfect Jennifer Jason Leigh Movies, According To Rotten Tomatoes

The Two Perfect Jennifer Jason Leigh Movies, According To Rotten Tomatoes

Jennifer Jason Leigh came from a showbiz family. Her father was Vic Morrow, a prolific film and TV actor who starred in the series “Combat!” Her mother was Barbara Turner who acted in many TV shows throughout the ’50s and ’60s, and who wrote the screenplays for “Petulia,” “Cujo,” “Georgia,” and “Pollock.” Leigh started attending acting workshops when she was still a teenager, studying with Lee Strasberg. At age 16, she started to land her first professional acting gigs, appearing in an episode of “Baretta,” and in the film “The Young Runaways.” In 1981, she caught the public’s eye playing a young woman battling anorexia in the TV movie “The Best Little Girl in the World,” but it wasn’t until her role in 1982’s “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” that the world took proper notice.

After that, Leigh was an actress to look out for. Her intense performances always lend a grounded clarity to the movies she was in, and she was capable of giving both understated and over-the-top performances; Leigh appeared as killers and weirdos in several films throughout the ’80s and ’90s. Leigh’s career is so expansive and textured, that it’s hard to pin down her best performance. Personally, I think she was amazing in Ulu Grosbard’s 1995 music film “Georgia,” the film she produced, and that her mother wrote, and late sister served as a technical advisor on. Her co-star, Mare Winningham deserved her Oscar nomination for “Georgia,” but it’s an injustice that Leigh herself didn’t receive one.

Leigh is seemingly selective about the projects she involves herself in, and tends to appear in complex, adult dramas or wild, fun horror; you won’t see Leigh in too many whimsically disposable Hollywood blockbusters. Most recently, she appeared in Chris Pine’s directorial debut “Poolman” and played one of the lead characters on the fifth season of “Fargo.”

Measuring by her films’ approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though, Leigh has two “perfect” films: 1996’s “Bastard Out of Carolina” and 2019’s “Sid & Judy.”

Jennifer Jason Leigh appeared in two 100% Rotten Tomatoes-approved flicks

Based on the 1992 novel by Dorothy Allison, “Bastard Out of Carolina” is one of only two films directed by the amazing Anjelica Houston, who was making her directorial debut at the time. In the film, Leigh played Anney Boatwright, the unmarried twentysomething mother of Ruth Anne “Bone” Boatwright (Jena Malone). Bone had to traverse the personal struggles one encounters being the child of an unwed mother in 1950s South Carolina. This was still a time when the word “illegitimate” was stamped on newborns’ birth certificates if their mothers were unmarried. The film details the horrid cycle of physical and sexual abuse Bone suffers at the hands of her vicious stepfather Glen (Ron Eldard). Anney is alternately unaware of the abuse, and then quick to forgive when she finds out about it. Bone finds solace with aunts and uncles, trying to flee Glen as often as possible.

“Bastard Out of Carolina” only has nine reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but they are all positive. The film didn’t receive too many reviews because it was broadcast on cable TV. In the 1990s, there was still something of a stigma surrounding TV movies, and many critics and news outlets considered them to be outside their cinematic purview. Never mind that incredibly talented actors were turning in some incredibly daring work. Leigh is only a supporting player, but her character is complex. How much abuse is she willing to withstand — and invite upon her daughter — in exchange for the outward propriety of being a 1950s housewife with “a good husband” at home?

The film was nominated for several Emmys, winning Best Casting. In addition to Leigh, Malone, and Eldard, “Bastard Out of Carolina” also starred Glenne Headly, Lyle Lovett, Dermot Mulroney, Christina Ricci, Grave Zabriskie, and Michael Rooker. Laura Dern played the grown version of Bone, who narrated.

Jennifer Jason Leigh also played Judy Garland in a documentary

In 2019, documentarian Stephen Kijak made a film about the relationship Judy Garland had with her third husband and longtime manager, Sidney Luft. The film was based largely on Luft’s memoir, and he recalled, in detail, the addictions and mental health issues that Garland struggled with. It was Luft who helped produce one of Garland’s best movies, the 1954 version of “A Star is Born,” which got her an Academy Award. Kijak was already known for his documentaries about the bands X, the Rolling Stones, and the Backstreet Boys. He also did a fantastic film in 2006 about Scott Walker, and most recently directed a retrospective on the personal life of Rock Hudson.

“Sid & Judy” was well-received by critics when it was released on Showtime. Like “Bastard Out of Carolina,” though, it wasn’t widely reviewed, having only eight on Rotten Tomatoes. All eight are positive, though. Jude Dry, writing for IndieWire, said that the film was deeply sympathetic toward Garland, but also careful to keep her on the hook for her transgressions. Stephen Dalton, writing for the Hollywood Reporter, felt the film was insightful and surprisingly brisk. The general critical consensus was that “Sid & Judy” humanized Garland, allowing her to be a person beyond her well-publicized personal problems.

The film featured several letters and quotations from both Luft and Garland, dramatically read by Jon Hamm and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Leigh’s performance wasn’t central to “Sid & Judy,” but it sounds like it was appreciated. Leigh always brings a certain level of natural intensity to her roles, and that can be heard in some of her narrations.

Leigh is currently filming the upcoming movies “Night Always Comes” with Vanessa Kirby and the star-studded “Crime 101” with Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Halle Berry, Barry Keoghan, and Corey Hawkins.

Jennifer Jason Leigh has had a long and illustrious career in Hollywood, starring in a wide range of films across various genres. But according to Rotten Tomatoes, there are two movies in particular that stand out as her best work.

The first of these films is “The Hateful Eight” (2015), directed by Quentin Tarantino. In this Western thriller, Leigh plays the role of Daisy Domergue, a ruthless and conniving outlaw who finds herself trapped in a cabin with a group of strangers during a blizzard. The film received critical acclaim for its gripping storytelling, stellar performances, and stunning cinematography, earning a certified fresh rating of 74% on Rotten Tomatoes. Leigh’s performance in particular was praised for its intensity and complexity, showcasing her range as an actress.

The second standout film in Leigh’s career, according to Rotten Tomatoes, is “Anomalisa” (2015), a stop-motion animated film directed by Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson. In this unique and thought-provoking story, Leigh voices the character of Lisa, a shy and insecure woman who forms a connection with the main character, Michael Stone. The film was lauded for its innovative animation style, poignant storytelling, and emotional depth, earning a certified fresh rating of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. Leigh’s vocal performance was highlighted as a standout element of the film, bringing depth and vulnerability to her character.

Overall, these two films showcase Jennifer Jason Leigh’s incredible talent and versatility as an actress, solidifying her status as one of the most respected and acclaimed performers in Hollywood.

Netflix has added Max: Fury Road, a movie the critics called “an eruption of craziness”, “barking” and “awe-inspiring”.

It scored 97% on the Tomatometer and when the 2016 awards season drew to a close it had bagged no less than six Oscars, the biggest haul at the ceremony. It felt like creator and director George Miller had punched a hole through cinema screens with Mad Max: Fury Road, taking it in an entirely different direction since Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome thirty years previously. He’d put the spotlight on two powerful central characters and created a post-apocalyptic world that was simultaneously terrifying and mesmerizing. And now it’s crash-landed on Netflix in the US and the UK.

The fourth in Miller’s action-packed series was set years after the collapse of what we would recognize as civilization, with the tyrant Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) forcing survivors of the apocalypse into slavery inside his desert fortress, The Citadel. His five young wives are trophies to him, so he’s enraged when they escape, helped by warrior Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron). She forges an alliance with the solitary, one-time captive Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) and, as Joe gives chase, they flee at speed across the scorching Wasteland in the massive, armored roadtrain, The War Rig.

    Mad Max: Fury Road

    Mad Max: Fury Road

The combination of a new Max, in the shape of Hardy, and Theron’s iron-fisted Furiosa, created a grudging respect on screen that worked perfectly alongside the chaos of the film. Theron also staked her claim to being one of the best women action actors around: Atomic Blonde followed (a sequel is due next year), as did three Fast And Furious installments and The Old Guard is still on Netflix in both the US and the UK. They all allowed her to kick ass in what became her trademark style.

Their respective performances were just part of the bigger picture. The film’s relentless quality, its pounding action and ferocious electronic music, all on the biggest of scales, meant that audiences felt as if they’d been battered over the head.

In the best possible way. That sense of exhaustion and its assault on the senses made for a massively entertaining experience, as did its high production values and indelible images. Those thrash metal guitarists, the War Rig and the then-emerging Nicholas Hoult turned one of the craziest movie franchises going into one of the most memorable and spectacular.

Nearly ten years later, its power remains intact. Post-apocalyptic settings have become inevitable regulars on our screens — the possibilities are seemingly endless — but there’s never been one that totally equals Miller’s Fury Road. It’s a near-impossible act to follow.

Mad Max: Fury Road is now on Netflix in the US and UK. The Old Guard is on Netflix in the US and UK.

Netflix has just added a new movie to its ever-expanding library, and it’s already making waves in the film industry. The critically acclaimed movie, which has won six Oscars and holds an impressive 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, is sure to captivate audiences with its awe-inspiring storytelling and breathtaking visuals.

This latest addition to Netflix’s lineup is a must-watch for any movie lover who appreciates top-tier filmmaking. With a star-studded cast and a gripping plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this movie is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who watch it.

Don’t miss out on the chance to experience this cinematic masterpiece from the comfort of your own home. Grab some popcorn, dim the lights, and prepare to be amazed by this six-time Oscar-winning sensation, now streaming on Netflix.

  • Tom Hardy’s 97% Rotten Tomatoes Post-Apocalyptic Sci-Fi Thriller Finds Immediate Streaming Success on a New Platform

Tom Hardy’s 97% Rotten Tomatoes Post-Apocalyptic Sci-Fi Thriller Finds Immediate Streaming Success on a New Platform

2024 was a relatively quiet year for Tom Hardy until the release of Venom: The Last Dance, the Sony superhero tentpole that grossed over $475 million at the worldwide box office on its way to becoming one of the biggest films of the year. However, long before he ever suited up as Eddie Brock, Hardy starred in a post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller that will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year, and was just added to a new streamer. Hardy features alongside Charlie Theron and Nicholas Hoult in Mad Max: Fury Road, which was recently removed from Max and added to Netflix along with the 2024 prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Mad Max: Fury Road has wasted no time climbing the Netflix streaming charts, sitting at #4 in the top 10 at the time of writing.

Mad Max: Fury Road was written and directed by George Miller, with Brendan McCarthy and Nick Lathouris also receiving credit for their work as scribes on the film. Miller’s first big breakout came in 1979 when he directed the original Mad Max, the car action thriller starring Mel Gibson in the lead role. Just a few years later, he also helmed the sequel, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, before wrapping up the classic trilogy with Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Before he returned to the Mad Max franchise in 2015 to direct Fury Road, Miller also worked as the director on Happy Feet and Happy Feet Two, the animated films starring Elijah Wood and Robin Williams. In 2022 he also directed Three Thousand Years of Longing, the fairy tale fantasy thriller starring Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton.

What Else Has Tom Hardy Been in Lately?

Before playing Eddie Brock for the final time in Venom: The Last Dance, Hardy also starred alongside Austin Butler and Jodie Comer in The Bikeriders, the gritty gangster motorcycle drama from writer/director Jeff Nichols. This came the year after reprising his role as Alfie Solomons in the final season of Peaky Blinders, the period crime drama streaming on Netflix. He also played Eddie Brock for the second time in 2021 in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which featured Woody Harrelson as the titular villain.

Mad Max: Fury Road stars Tom Hardy and Charlie Theron and was written and directed by George Miller. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates and watch Mad Max: Fury Road on Netflix.
