ACC Roundup – Is Louisville For Real Now?
Three games on Tuesday as Boston College goes to Virginia, Louisville visits SMU and UNC checks in with Wake Forest.
BC and Virginia is a weird one. Virginia has lost five straight and really only the SMU game was close.
As for the Eagles, they’ve lost four straight, none of them particularly close although they did play fairly well against a much better Duke team.
We’d probably go with Boston College here because the coaching is more stable. And Virginia seems a bit demoralized in general, which isn’t helpful.
Louisville and SMU is a very interesting game. After getting smacked around by Duke, SMU has played very well against Georgia Tech and Miami. Only Virginia, ironically, gave them a good game, but the Mustangs still won.
However, Louisville is playing with not just confidence but swagger and Chucky Hepburn is likely going to strangle Boopie Miller defensively. And as Al McGuire taught us, if you cut off the head, the body dies.
Pat Kelsey has done a tremendous job to date. It’s not that Andy Enfield hasn’t done a great job at SMU – he really has. But Louisville was really in the crapper emotionally – and we mean players, fans, everyone – and he’s completely turned that around. It’s really impressive and you can see that team growing before your eyes. In fact, the Cardinals are now ranked: Louisville is #25 in this week’s AP Poll.
UNC and Wake Forest should be interesting. The Tar Heels just lost to Stanford at home and part of the reason for that was that they couldn’t control Maxime Raynaud. It won’t be quite the same thing with Effron Reid, but he’s still big and strong.
The real question is whether Wake’s guards can stop UNC’s perimeter. And here’s another major concern for UNC: they had been improving their NCAA resume before the Stanford loss. They can’t afford many more at this point. There’s a lot more pressure on the Tar Heels than there is on Wake Forest in this one.
Tuesday’s ACC Action

The ACC has been full of surprises this season, but one team that has been turning heads recently is Louisville. After a strong start to the season, the Cardinals have continued to impress with their play on both sides of the ball. With wins over tough opponents like Duke and Virginia, Louisville is making a case to be considered a serious contender in the ACC. Led by standout guard Carlik Jones, who is averaging over 17 points per game, the Cardinals have shown they have the talent and depth to compete with the best teams in the conference.
But the question remains: is Louisville for real now? Some fans and analysts are still hesitant to fully buy into the Cardinals’ success, citing their inconsistent play at times and lack of signature wins against top-ranked opponents.
However, with a strong finish to the regular season and a solid showing in the ACC tournament, Louisville could prove their doubters wrong and make a deep run in March Madness. Only time will tell if the Cardinals are truly a force to be reckoned with in the ACC, but one thing is for sure – they are a team to keep an eye on as the season progresses.

[News] Intel’s Potential Buyers Speculated Ahead of Trump’s Inauguration: A Quick Round-up
Ahead of Trump’s inauguration, U.S. semiconductor giant Intel is rumored to be connected with more potential buyers for its struggling chip business. A report from SemiAccurate discloses that a company is interested in buying Intel outright, not just parts, and this isn’t one of the firms mentioned in rumors after former CEO Pat Gelsinger’s departure.
The report even claims that SemiAccurate has received direct confirmation from another high-level source, increasing its confidence in the plan from about 60% to over 90%.
So, who would be the key figure to “Make America Great Again” by acquiring Intel? Here is a quick roundup of recent speculations and related analysis compiled by TrendForce.
Elon’s Musk’s Next Step?
Interesting enough, there were rumors indicating that at the weekend, private jets from Musk, executives of Qualcomm, and GlobalFoundries have gathered at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club.
The man who eagerly explores in the space with his rockets now might be showing interest in microchips. Another Tipranks report, citing Citi, claims that Elon Musk was mentioned as a potential buyer of Intel on SemiAccurate. However, the report also brings up concerns that this may appear to be a “poor outcome” for Intel unless Team Blue hires a new CEO with expertise in advanced manufacturing, technical skills, and Intel experience.
GlobalFoundries to Team up?
Notably, another report from Bloomberg suggests that senior government officials are considering a potential deal between Intel and GlobalFoundries, while some see GlobalFoundries as a strong partner due to its status as a trusted Pentagon supplier. In September, 2024, Intel secured a $3.5 billion Pentagon contract to produce advanced semiconductors for military and intelligence use.
As they are both major U.S.-based foundries, a merger between GlobalFoundries and Intel could create a company making everything from basic semiconductors to advanced processors, the report adds.
However, the merger could pose challenges. For one thing, Mubadala Investment Co., the Abu Dhabi government’s investment arm, owns about 80% of GlobalFoundries, as noted by Bloomberg. For another, GlobalFoundries moved away from leading-edge node production years ago due to a lack of orders, and it may not have the funds for an acquisition, the report indicates.
Qualcomm and Broadcom May be Moving Away
The ones with the capital, however, may no longer be interested in the deal. A previous Bloomberg report noted that Qualcomm’s interest in acquiring Intel has waned, as the complexity of acquiring all of Intel has made the deal less appealing. However, sources suggested Qualcomm could reportedly consider buying parts of Intel or revisit the idea later.
On the other hand, Broadcom, known for its custom ASICs co-developed with big CSPs, told the Financial Times that the company is fully focused on advancing its AI business and has no intention of acquiring Intel.

With the upcoming inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, speculation is growing about potential buyers for Intel, one of the world’s leading technology companies. Here’s a quick round-up of some of the rumored buyers:1. Apple: With its deep pockets and focus on innovation, Apple has long been rumored as a potential buyer for Intel. The acquisition would give Apple control over Intel’s chip manufacturing capabilities and could help the company further differentiate its products from competitors.
2. Google: Another tech giant that has been mentioned as a possible buyer for Intel is Google. The acquisition would give Google access to Intel’s technology and expertise, helping the company strengthen its position in the competitive tech industry.
3. Microsoft: As a leading software company, Microsoft could benefit from acquiring Intel’s hardware capabilities. The acquisition could help Microsoft further integrate its software and hardware offerings, giving the company a competitive edge in the market.
4. Samsung: With its strong presence in the electronics industry, Samsung is another potential buyer for Intel. The acquisition could help Samsung strengthen its position in the semiconductor market and expand its reach in the tech industry.
While these are just a few of the potential buyers for Intel, the speculation highlights the interest in the company and the potential impact of a sale. As Trump’s inauguration approaches, all eyes will be on Intel and its future. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story. #Intel #TrumpInauguration #TechNews

Stephen Colbert on Trump’s tech bro buddies: ‘the guys that Biden warned us about’ | Late-night TV roundup
Late-night hosts reviewed Joe Biden’s final speech as he makes way for Donald Trump’s second term as president.
Stephen Colbert
On the Late Show, Stephen Colbert said that tonight would represent the “end of an era” as “this is our last show of the Biden administration”.
Biden’s farewell speech warned of the growing “tech-industrial complex” yet Colbert joked that “delivering it in your trademark low-power mode whisper ramble robbed it of an essential urgency”.
At Trump’s upcoming inauguration, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg will be sitting up front alongside politicians. “Sweet Jesus in a skybox, that is the most corrupt-appearing thing I’ve ever heard,” he said.
He added: “If we’re gonna go full Roman empire, at least throw Denzel Washington in there.”
He referred to the three of them as “pasty money buckets” and said that with Amazon “sucking up to Trump” he might “consider not needing same-day shipping now”.
He continued: “These are the guys that Biden warned us about.”
Colbert then showed viewers the two portraits that had been taken of Trump and his vice-president, JD Vance. While displaying Vance’s picture, he joked: “I love how that blue tie brings out the colour of his dead soul.”
Jimmy Kimmel
On Jimmy Kimmel Live! the host also spoke about Biden’s speech remarking that at 18 minutes long, it’s “also the amount of time it takes the president to pee”.
He said that it was “more like a stern talking to than a speech” with the outgoing president warning of threats to democracy. “Basically his message was, I’m getting the hell out of here and you should too,” he said.
Fox News hosts decided to focus on the fact that Biden was sitting on a pillow the whole time which led Kimmel to wonder who they will spend their time attacking once he is gone. “I guess it’s back to the gay M&Ms,” he said.
This week also saw Trump appoint three Hollywood ambassadors: Mel Gibson, Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone, AKA “Braveheart, Rambo and the Midnight Cowboy”.
“He’s summoned the three horsemen of the Apocalypto,” Kimmel said, adding that the reason must be that “Trump saw The Expendables 3 on his plane last night”.
Trump has said that the three men will be his eyes and ears in Los Angeles. “Who better to be Trump’s eyes and ears than 86-year-old Jon Voight?” Kimmel asked.
He also joked: “Kevin Sorbo must be devastated that he wasn’t included.”
Seth Meyers
On Late Night, Seth Meyers looked toward the inauguration and said that “everyone is just going to get along” despite an “existential threat to democracy” looking back at the recent funeral of Jimmy Carter where figures like Barack Obama were seen “palling around” with Trump.
Meyers joked that because “everyone other than Donald Trump believes in the institutions and traditions of this country” things will go smoothly,
He also took aim at Biden’s cautionary speech about the country turning into an oligarchy. “Now you’re warning us?” he said, adding: “It’s not like we didn’t have a hint that any of this was happening.”
He then played clips of Bernie Sanders who has been warning us about the dangers of an oligarchy dating back to 1993. “Joe Biden is three decades behind Bernie Sanders,” Meyers said.
He also joked: “It’s hard to tell because Bernie looks the exact same.”
Meyers stressed that many of Biden’s warnings should have been brought up by the Democrats “during the campaign” and that Biden waited until his “last day at work to stuff the suggestion box”.
He then asked: “Why are you giving us a to-do list on your way out?”
“Oligarchy isn’t just taking shape, it’s here,” he said.
Stephen Colbert recently took aim at President Trump’s tech bro buddies, referring to them as “the guys that Biden warned us about” during a segment on “The Late Show.”Colbert mocked Trump’s close relationships with tech CEOs like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, suggesting that they were using their influence to manipulate the president. He pointed out that Biden had previously warned about the dangers of cozying up to Silicon Valley elites, and now it seems that Trump is falling right into their trap.
The late-night host also took jabs at Trump’s recent meeting with Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, joking that the president was probably asking for tips on how to get more followers. Colbert suggested that Trump’s tech bro buddies were only interested in protecting their own interests, rather than the American people.
Overall, Colbert’s commentary shed light on the potentially dangerous connections between Trump and his tech industry allies, painting a picture of a president who is easily swayed by powerful figures in Silicon Valley. It’s clear that Colbert isn’t afraid to call out Trump’s questionable relationships, even if it means ruffling some feathers in the process.

NBA round-up: Jimmy Butler returns for Miami Heat after seven-match suspension
Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler returned from a seven-match suspension as his side lost 133-113 to the Denver Nuggets.
The 35-year-old was sidelined earlier this month by the Heat because of “conduct detrimental to the team” and has requested a trade.
Although the Heat initially said they would not make Butler available for trade, they later said they would listen to offers for the six-time NBA All-Star.
However, Butler remains with the Heat and scored 18 points and played 33 minutes in Friday’s defeat in Florida.
Less than two hours before tipoff, Butler said “I’m back” in a statement released on social media by his agent Bernie O. Lee. The statement indicated it was a response to questions about Butler’s career plans.
After the game, he answered questions at his locker while wearing a number 45 Chicago Bulls jersey – the number worn by Michael Jordan when he returned from his first retirement.
“There was a lot said by everybody, except for me, to tell you the truth,” Butler said about the suspension.
“So, we’ll let people keep talking like they know everything and have all the answers. And then, sooner or later, the whole truth will come out.
“But, until then, we’ll continue to let people talk. If I’m here, I will get out there and play.”
Regarding his team-mates, Butler said: “It felt good to get out there, compete, and actually run around with these guys.
“As much as everybody may think, I don’t got a problem with these guys. These guys are cool. They’re my friends. My beef is not with them, never will be, and never has been.”
Butler, who previously played for the Philadelphia 76ers, the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Chicago Bulls, joined the Heat in 2019 and has made 378 NBA appearances for them.
After serving a seven-game suspension, Jimmy Butler made his return to the Miami Heat lineup in a highly anticipated game against the Golden State Warriors. Butler, who was suspended for an altercation with Indiana Pacers forward T.J. Warren, wasted no time making an impact on the court. The four-time All-Star scored 21 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and dished out 7 assists in his first game back, leading the Heat to a 113-101 victory over the Warriors. Butler’s presence was felt on both ends of the court, as he provided lockdown defense and clutch scoring when his team needed it most.
With Butler back in the lineup, the Heat look poised to make a strong push in the Eastern Conference standings. They currently sit in fourth place, just half a game behind the Boston Celtics for the third seed.
Butler’s return couldn’t have come at a better time for the Heat, as they gear up for a tough stretch of games against some of the top teams in the league. His leadership and scoring ability will be crucial as Miami looks to solidify their position in the playoff race.
Overall, Butler’s return is a welcome sight for Heat fans and NBA enthusiasts alike. His dynamic playstyle and competitive spirit make him a force to be reckoned with on the court, and his presence will undoubtedly elevate Miami’s performance in the coming games. Stay tuned for more updates on Butler and the Miami Heat as they continue their quest for a championship.

#NBA #roundup #Jimmy #Butler #returns #Miami #Heat #sevenmatch #suspensionNBA trade rumors roundup: Latest news including Zion Williamson speculation, Cameron Johnson hot name
The league has gone from a slow jog to a full sprint as it approaches the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline. Here are the latest rumors from around the Association.
Does Zion want out of New Orleans?
Take this with a grain of salt for a few reasons, but ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith reported that Zion Williamson wants out of New Orleans (allegedly his being late to a team flight was a sign of that). His reported preference is to land in a major market — Los Angeles, New York — to improve his marketability.
Cool.
First, Zion said previously that he wants to stay in New Orleans. The Pelicans have not pushed a trade. This is more smoke than fire with the Zion rumors around the deadline, despite the fact there has been a buzz from almost the day he was drafted of him (or at least some of the people around him) thinking the grass looks greener elsewhere.
More importantly, Zion’s marketability isn’t struggling because he is in a small market — it’s his play. Or lack thereof. In the last four seasons (including the current one), Zion has played in 37.4% of the Pelicans games due to injury. This is a roster built around his unquestionably impressive skills getting buckets inside, but you have to play and win to be marketable — LaMelo Ball isn’t winning but he’s on the court this season putting on a show and fans respond to that. Injuries happen, but Zion getting suspended a game for chronic tardiness (being late to practices, a team flight to Philadelphia) and him physically not holding up feel like part of the same thread. Fans notice professionalism and it matters.
The Pelicans are not going to trade Zion at the deadline because it would be difficult to move his $36.7 million contract and because the offers they are getting are reportedly lowball. They could waive him this summer for not meeting his contract’s unique game’s played clause, but that’s not happening according to reports. The most likely outcome is the Pelicans try to trade him this summer to a team willing to roll the dice on the three years, more than $123 million still on his contract. Some team might take a flier. But don’t bet on it being one of those big market teams, none of them should be that desperate.
Nets Cameron Johnson hottest name on market
Buzz continues to grow around the Nets’ Cameron Johnson — he is the player most likely to be moved before the deadline, report Tim Bontemps and Brian Windhorst of ESPN.
A lot of teams covet him and with good reason, Johnson is one guy on the board who could really improve a team, a 6’8″ wing averaging 19.6 points per game and shooting 42% from 3-point range, and he is a plus defender at a position of need.
With that, the price for him — rumored to be multiple first-rounders — remains high. (While the price is a little lower, the same is reportedly true for Nets center Nic Claxton, who has drawn some interest in league circles.)
Among the teams interested in Johnson is Cleveland — they are a title contender and the one clear hole on the team is at the wing (Cleveland started Dean Wade at the three against Oklahoma City Thursday night). Cleveland is absolutely interested, reports Joe Varden at The Athletic. Putting together that trade is not easy, but there are constructions that work (Max Strus, Georges Niang, Ty Jerome, and the Cavaliers 2026 and 2028 firsts for Johnson work in a trade machine, but that’s a steep price). Just finding one the teams agree to is the challenge.
Knicks could target Jonas Valanciunas
New York is still betting on Mitchell Robinson returning, being a defensive force, and balancing out their frontcourt with Karl-Anthony Towns. If that doesn’t happen, or Robinson isn’t himself, the Knicks could target Jonas Valanciunas, reports Ian Begley of SNY.
The Lakers are among a number of other teams also looking at Valanciunas as a trade option at the deadline.
Curry, Green, Kerr want Warriors to be patient
The Golden State Warriors are not one player away from contending. This is a team a game below .500 with the 20th-ranked offense in the league — despite having Stephen Curry. If the postseason started today, the 19-20 Warriors wouldn’t even make the play-in.
Despite that, the Warriors’ core — Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and coach Steve Kerr — all said publicly that the Warriors should not make a desperate trade at the deadline. Green summed up the trio’s thoughts best, speaking to Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports.
“The beautiful part about being in the space that we’re in is, Steve Kerr, Steph Curry and myself all disagree with mortgaging off the future of this organization, saying that we’re going for it right now, Bad teams do that. Bad organizations do that. We’re not neither one.”
Read between the lines of what those three said and it’s “Don’t trade four guys for Jimmy Butler. Don’t give up a bunch of players and picks get Zach LaVine.” That is exactly the right attitude. It’s not like we’re talking about Giannis Antetokounmpo or Luka Doncic being available, the big names the Warriors could chance for are expensive and don’t move the needle that much.
The Warriors are looking at smaller deals, particularly ones that can add some frontcourt depth. The Warriors have had some talks about adding one of Nikola Vucevic, John Collins, Jonas Valanciunas or Robert Williams III, reports Michael Scotto at HoopsHype.
Suns can’t find taker for Nurkic
Phoenix upgraded its athleticism at center trading for center Nick Richards from the Hornets. That leaves four centers on the Suns roster and they would like to trade the most expensive one, Jusuf Nurkic, for a player who can help them now.
The Suns can’t find a team willing to take him on, reports John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7. Part of what is putting teams off is the $19.4 million he is guaranteed next season, which is a lot of money to take on. Still, the Suns are looking.
Raptors to be sellers at deadline
Toronto is open to being the third team (or at least, one of the teams) in a Jimmy Butler trade, but that’s not the only thing decision-maker Masai Ujiri is considering.
Bruce Brown and Chris Boucher are two players, both on expiring contracts, that the Raptors are testing the market for, reports Marc Stein and Jake Fischer at the Stein Line.
Brown is 28 and GMs will remember how much his two-way play helped Denver win a title in 2023. What makes teams hesitant is Brown was out until December with a knee injury and hasn’t found his footing since his return. He is making $23 million, and while that’s expiring in the summer teams still have to match that salary and send a draft pick (or young player) back to Toronto — what player are they getting for that price?
Boucher has been showcased more of late by the Raptors and is averaging 10.5 points and 4.5 boards a game off the bench.
Hornets still listening to offers
Center Nick Richards is out the door but the Hornets are open to making another trade, team president of basketball operations Jeff Peterson telling reporters he is still open to a trade (via Roderick Boone of The Charlotte Observer).
“I think at this point, look, we are going to listen to everything. We are not going to do anything to compromise the future, but we are going to do what’s best for the organization that we see going forward in order to be sustainable going forward.”
Cavaliers a trendy destination?
Players want to win. Well, to put it in the proper order, players want to get paid, but going to a winning situation is second. Especially if it looks like the team has good chemistry and is having fun on the court.
Enter the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Players are telling agents they would like to get to Cleveland, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said on ESPN Cleveland. That is about both sides of the equation, the idea that owner Dan Gilbert will pay to keep good players around, plus the Cavaliers are sharing the rock, having fun and winning.
This all sounds good, but money is about to get tight in Cleveland. Things get very expensive starting next season when Darius Garland makes $39.5 million, Donovan Mitchell $46.4 million on his new contract, Evan Mobley $38.7 million on his new contract extension, and Jarrett Allen is at $20 million with huge raises ahead. With the tax aprons, the Cavaliers are going to have hard choices in the coming years, but they also have a window now.
Rockets reportedly Devin Booker “fans”
Houston is not getting in the Jimmy Butler sweepstakes to bring the 35-year-old back home. If – or more likely, when — Houston takes a big swing on a superstar player, it will be more about someone closer to their young core’s timeline.
The Rockets are big Devin Booker fans, ESPN’s Tim MacMahon said on the Hoop Collective podcast. No doubt they are, good luck finding a front office that is not a fan of Booker. The man is wearing a gold medal for a reason.
Phoenix has zero interest in trading Booker. To reiterate, the Suns are not considering a Booker trade. He has three years (at more than $171 million) after this season locked in on his contract, so there is no motivation for Phoenix to consider a trade. If the Booker/Kevin Durant era falls apart in a few years as his contract nears its end, maybe this is a different conversation, but we’re years away from finding out. For now, this is all just wishful thinking by Houston.
With the NBA trade deadline quickly approaching, the rumor mill is heating up with potential deals and player movement. Here’s a roundup of the latest trade rumors swirling around the league:1. Zion Williamson speculation: The New Orleans Pelicans’ star forward has been the subject of trade rumors in recent weeks, with several teams reportedly expressing interest in acquiring the former number one overall pick. While the Pelicans have maintained that they have no intentions of trading Williamson, the speculation continues to swirl as the deadline approaches.
2. Cameron Johnson hot name: Phoenix Suns forward Cameron Johnson has emerged as a hot name on the trade market, with several contending teams reportedly interested in the sharpshooting forward. Johnson’s ability to stretch the floor and knock down three-pointers has made him an attractive target for teams looking to bolster their shooting.
3. Ben Simmons trade talks: Philadelphia 76ers star Ben Simmons remains a focal point of trade discussions, with several teams reportedly engaged in talks with the Sixers about a potential deal. Simmons’ defensive prowess and playmaking ability make him a coveted asset, but his lack of shooting has been a point of contention in trade negotiations.
4. Kristaps Porzingis on the move?: Dallas Mavericks big man Kristaps Porzingis has been mentioned in trade rumors in recent weeks, with the Mavericks reportedly open to moving the former All-Star. Porzingis’ injury history and contract have made him a tricky player to move, but several teams are said to be monitoring the situation closely.
As the trade deadline approaches, expect the rumor mill to continue churning out speculation and potential deals as teams look to make moves to improve their rosters for the stretch run of the season. Stay tuned for more updates on the latest trade rumors in the NBA.

Votes isn’t sure how this year will be different yet, but knows WWE is “trying to come up with different ways to present everything”.
- Regarding talk of WWE hosting a PLE in Mexico soon, WrestleVotes says there’s a “very high possibility” that happens in 2026.
- Another one from Votes: WWE is “shooting” to have Tonga Loa “back on TV around WrestleMania”.
- WWE has an idea of how long they want Raw on Netflix to be, per Fightful Select. It’s not known what the length is, but neither the premiere nor this week’s show reflected the official runtime.
- Both Fightful and PW Insider report the reason the Jan. 13 Raw was timed for two-and-a-half hours was so WWE could put on dark matches after the Netflix stream ended and still allow people flying out that night time to get to the airport. That was known and not a surprise to anyone backstage. Insider says while some talents were upset other segments were trimmed after Penta went long, they weren’t upset at Penta.
- TNA is planning a live episode of Impact from Orlando on Feb. 20, per Fightful Select. It won’t be the start of regular live broadcasts, but Sean Ross Sapp’s TNA sources tell him Impact will go live “on special occasions when it makes sense for the company”.

I’m sure that Yankees fans are well and truly tired of hearing about Juan Soto. We get it, he likes the other New York team more. So don’t worry, friends. I won’t mention Juan Soto, unparalleled hitting genius, after this paragraph. Sure, the ghost of Juan Soto, signer of the biggest contract in professional sports history, might inform the rest of the moves the Yankees are making. Sure, not signing superstar Juan Soto after his incandescent 2024 season makes all the rest of the team’s moves feel minor. But again, you won’t see the words “Juan Soto” after this instance, so let’s get to the moves the Yankees are making to bolster their team in the aftermath of losing one of the brightest stars in the game.
Signing Paul Goldschmidt
The Yankees are going to need some offense if they want to replace Jua – whoa, almost broke my own rule right out of the gate. Uh… the Yankees are going to need some offense, period. They were a top-heavy team last year between Aaron Judge and his running mate, name tastefully withheld. Giancarlo Stanton’s playoff surge notwithstanding, the existing roster just didn’t have that much juice beyond Judge. Sure, adding Cody Bellinger was nice, but they needed to do more. Paul Goldschmidt, signed for one year and $12.5 million, is definitely more, it’s just a question of how much after his bummer of a 2024 season. As Michael Baumann detailed earlier this winter, Goldschmidt’s previously reliable production tanked last season. As Michael also pointed out, he wasn’t half bad in the second half, with a 120 wRC+ and completely acceptable peripherals underpinning it. That’s not far off from what Steamer projects for Goldschmidt this year – they have him at a 114 wRC+ and as roughly an average player as a result.
That might not sound like a big addition in a vacuum, but consider the context of the Yankees. Last year, hitters playing first base for New York compiled a .216/.284/.335 batting line, good for a 76 wRC+. Goldschmidt’s abysmal first half, the one that had people thinking he was completely cooked? He hit .230/.291/.373 for an 87 wRC+. If we’re talking about improvements over last year, getting to play a plus bat instead of a gaping hole at the easiest defensive position on the field sounds pretty nice.
Of course, Goldschmidt could absolutely live down to last year’s crop of first basemen, but I don’t think it’s particularly likely. He’s not what he once was, but neither did he look absolutely overmatched in 2024. He still launched 22 homers and made consistently loud contact. He swung and missed more than he ever has in an attempt to keep that power, and he walked at a career-low rate as a result. That’s scary. If he put up a sub-100 wRC+ season, I wouldn’t be terribly surprised.
But I also wouldn’t be terribly surprised if he had a resurgent year. We’re talking about a star playing out the end of the string, not a washed-up never-was. Goldschmidt has made adjustments throughout his career, rebounding to prominence after down years. He’s willing to change his bat or his swing or his preparation to keep improving, and while past performance is no guarantee of future results, I’d rather bet on a rebound season from a guy with 56 career WAR and an MVP trophy than most of the other options available anywhere near Goldschmidt’s price range.
One reason for slight optimism: Goldschmidt has rarely missed a game throughout his career. He’s played in at least 150 games every year since breaking his hand in 2014 (setting aside his 58 games in the COVID-shortened 2020 season). He’s 14th in plate appearances over the last three years, with only Freddie Freeman playing more than him at close to his age. Now that he’s on a role player’s deal instead of a superstar contract and implied captain’s C, he’ll undoubtedly play less, and hopefully that extra rest will do him good. It also surely won’t hurt that he’ll get platooned more in New York than he did in St. Louis (never), giving him a favorable matchup against lefties more frequently. Would a 130 wRC+ bounce-back surprise you? If it happened, I’m pretty sure you’d just nod your head and say “yeah, sounds right for a guy like him.”
Is that the most exciting signing in the world? No. But it’s a smart one, even if Goldschmidt is another righty in the lineup behind Judge. Short of just spending more money (hey, not a bad solution!), I think that the Yankees did pretty well at rebuilding their offense. I have a hard time seeing a player more likely to deliver a truly difference-making offensive season. Thanks to Goldschmidt’s traditional look, we’ll also get to see how much stubble still constitutes “no beard.” I wouldn’t say that this is my favorite signing of the offseason, but I certainly think it’s a reasonable one.
Acquiring Fernando Cruz
My dad is a talkative card player. We’ve played a fair number of games of bridge in my lifetime, and nearly every time he makes a play that improves his hand by moving the lead around, he’ll chuckle to himself and say “key unblocking maneuver!”, usually with the excitement I’d reserve for finding a good parking space at Costco or winning the lottery. Doesn’t matter whether he played the best hand of his life or landed on something a first-grader would have seen, the joy is genuine. My point is that I can absolutely imagine Brian Cashman saying “key unblocking maneuver!” and giggling so much he bounced in his chair after trading Jose Trevino to the Reds for Fernando Cruz and Alex Jackson.Trevino was a great change of scenery candidate. He’s an elite framer, unquestionably one of the best in baseball. The less said about his bat and throwing arm, however, the better. In recent years, that’s meant decreasing playing time as the Yankees hunt for more offense. Austin Wells is now the everyday starter, which left Trevino as an under-utilized backup. He notched 1.6 WAR in just 74 games (234 PA) last year. He’s good enough defensively to at least be in a time share, but the Yankees wanted to give Wells the full-time starter role. So they traded Trevino for an upgrade elsewhere on the roster and a more suitable backup catcher.
The upgrade elsewhere? That’d be Cruz, splitter merchant and LIDOM legend. Cruz’s major league career is either exceptional (3.07 FIP, 3.1 WAR in 147 innings) or mediocre (4.52 ERA, 0.9 RA9-WAR) depending on what you make of his underlying statistics. He strikes out more than a third of the batters he faces, walks a ton more, and basically throws his splitter whether it makes sense or not.
I land more on the exceptional side of the argument, for what it’s worth. I think that Cruz’s BABIP and strand rates are probably just random blips, and that his ability to miss bats will win out in the end. I wouldn’t want him as the closer of a playoff club, but 160 relievers threw 50 or more innings in 2024, and Cruz was sixth in strikeout rate. I’m fairly certain that the Yankees can find a way to turn that standout skill into a useful reliever, particularly given that he’ll be third or so in the bullpen pecking order. Recent vintages of Yankees teams have been built around excellent bullpens, and adding Cruz to assist Devin Williams and Luke Weaver is a good way to avoid a repeat of the 2024 playoffs, when Aaron Boone called on his top two relievers in every game without fail because he didn’t really trust anyone else.
Now, is Jackson a downgrade from Trevino? Definitely. He’s a roughly replacement level player – competent but unexciting defense, but offense worse even than Trevino. Sure, it’s a small sample, but he’s a career .132/.224/.232 hitter. The Reds signed him as a minor league free agent this winter, in fact; he never even played a game for them. Maybe the Yankees will end up calling up a minor leaguer, or maybe they’ll use Jackson sparingly and give Wells a huge workload. Either way, he’s a minor throw-in on the trade, but a useful one for New York if he can give them some competent innings behind the obvious starter.
One team’s key unblocking maneuver – the Yankees turned an overqualified backup catcher into an exciting reliever – can also be another team’s treasure. Trevino is a really good player! He’s too good to be a pure backup. Cincinnati gave Tyler Stephenson the lion’s share of time behind the plate in 2024, and he was, to put it optimistically, below average. His skills lie in the batter’s box, not 16 inches behind it. He’s a poor receiver, an indifferent blocker, and a poor thrower.
He might be marginally better than Trevino at controlling the running game, but on the whole, he’s far worse with catcher’s gear on, and I think that the Reds would love to give him more of a breather at DH or first base when they can. We’re talking about a mountain of a man, 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, who displays phenomenal power despite crouching all game. There’s a great offensive player in there somewhere, and I think that the Reds are planning on giving him reps at other positions in an attempt to decrease his wear and tear, and provide their pitching staff some free strikes here and there.
That said, I’m not exactly sure where that playing time will come from just yet. Even after trading Jonathan India, the Reds have too many positionless bats. They need to find playing time for Stephenson, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Spencer Steer, and Jeimer Candelario. But I think that problem will mostly sort itself out – someone will get injured or hit poorly, and starters need rest anyway. If the Reds find 100-200 plate appearances for Stephenson away from catcher, Trevino will be a huge boost to their chances, and I think that’s a reasonable expectation. Our Depth Chart projections agree with me, penciling Stephenson in for 133 plate appearances between DH and first base.
In other words – and stop me if you’ve heard this one before – I like this trade for both teams. The long-term consequences are minor – Trevino is a free agent after this season, and Cruz is a 35-year-old reliever, so more of a win-now player than a foundational piece. Note: an earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Cruz will be a free agent after this season. He’ll be eligible for arbitration, not free agency. The net change in talent is small in both directions. But I think that each team’s roster makes more sense after this move, and it’s hard to ask for more than that from a minor trade.
Now, will these deals make the Yankees forget about the lefty slugger who shall not be named? Probably not. But nothing’s going to do that. These are both smart roster moves that complement the existing team. The Yankees have already made some splashes this winter. I think they’ll likely make another move or two, and I’ll certainly give their front office grief if they don’t. But not every move needs to be a blockbuster, and both of these get my seal of approval.
The New York Yankees have been busy making moves this offseason, and their latest transactions have brought two big names to the Bronx.First up, the Yankees acquired first baseman Paul Goldschmidt from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for a package of prospects. Goldschmidt, a six-time All-Star and four-time Silver Slugger winner, brings a powerful bat and solid defense to the Yankees lineup. His addition gives the team a much-needed boost at first base, filling a hole left by the departure of Luke Voit.
In addition to Goldschmidt, the Yankees also signed veteran slugger Nelson Cruz to a one-year deal. Cruz, a seven-time All-Star and winner of the 2019 Silver Slugger award, adds even more power to an already potent Yankees lineup. The 41-year-old designated hitter is known for his ability to hit for both power and average, and his presence in the middle of the lineup will provide protection for the team’s other hitters.
Overall, these two moves signal the Yankees’ commitment to contending for a championship in the upcoming season. With Goldschmidt and Cruz in the fold, the Bombers are poised to be a force to be reckoned with in the American League.

World Junior Championship roundup: U.S. tops Switzerland to reach semifinals
Quarterfinal round results
United States 7, Switzerland 2 — James Hagens (2025 NHL Draft eligible) and Ryan Leonard (Washington Capitals) each scored two goals at Canadian Tire Centre to help the United States advance to the semifinals.
“It felt great especially since this is a win-or-go-home game, so it was special and really fun,” Hagens said.
Gabe Perreault (New York Rangers) had three assists, Zeev Buium (Minnesota Wild) had a goal and an assist, and Brodie Ziemer (Buffalo Sabres) and Oliver Moore (Chicago Blackhawks) each had two assists for the United States. Hampton Slukynsky (Los Angeles Kings) made 17 saves in his second start of the tournament.
The U.S. took a 4-1 lead in the first period.
“I think if you look at the way Switzerland’s been playing and the teams they’ve been playing against (in the Group B pool), they were being outshot in the first period and even into the second by a pretty good margin,” said Leonard, the U.S. captain. “We just wanted to focus on the first 5-10 minutes, and then we let our game take over.”
The United States, the defending champion, clinched a semifinal berth for the eighth time in 10 years. It will play Saturday against an opponent to be determined.
Brandon Svoboda (San Jose Sharks), Hagens and Leonard scored in the opening 11:35 for a 3-0 lead to chase Switzerland goalie Christian Kirsch (Sharks), who allowed three goals on 10 shots. Elijah Neuenschwander (2025 draft eligible) replaced him and allowed four goals on 21 shots.
“It’s always fun when you’re getting the bounces and they’re going in,” Perreault said. “I thought we played well, had a lot of chances, and hopefully keep going on the last couple games.”
Nils Rhyn (2025 draft eligible) pulled Switzerland within 3-1 at 15:04, scoring a short-handed goal on a slap shot from the point, before Danny Nelson (New York Islanders) scored on a deflection from the slot for a 4-1 lead at 16:44.
“We played as team in the third period; it was very good team effort,” Rhyn said. “In the first and second, the goals were coming a little bit too fast through our own mistakes.”
Buium pushed it to 5-1 at 7:45 of the second period with a power-play goal, knocking in a shot from the slot off a pass from Perreault.
“Zeev’s playing and taking what’s given and what’s in front of him, and that’s nice to see,” U.S. coach David Carle said. “He’s a very talented player who can do things 1-on-1 in space, but we’re looking more like a collective unit, which is a good thing for us.”
Hagens scored his second of the game for a 6-1 lead at 15:03 off a give-and-go with Perreault. Leonard then made it 7-1 with a power-play goal at 16:23. The Boston College line of Leonard, Hagens and Perreault combined for four goals and seven points.
“We had a lot of chances and when we missed a couple, we don’t get frustrated and stuck with it,” Hagens said. “We’ve had a long year together (at Boston College) and being here and being able to come from school, it’s been awesome. We know if we keep sticking to it, it’ll work out.”
Andro Kaderli (2025 draft eligible) scored on a rebound from the slot for Switzerland at 6:53 of the third period for the 7-2 final.
The United States is undefeated against Switzerland in 27 games at the World Juniors (25 wins, two ties). The U.S. is 15-9 in the quarterfinals.
The U.S. World Junior team continued their impressive run at the 2022 World Junior Championship, defeating Switzerland 5-2 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals. The Americans got off to a strong start, scoring two quick goals in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Switzerland fought back in the second period, cutting the deficit to 2-1, but the U.S. responded with two more goals to extend their lead to 4-1 heading into the third period.
Switzerland managed to score another goal in the third period, but the U.S. sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the final minutes of the game.
The U.S. will now face the winner of the quarterfinal matchup between Sweden and Finland in the semifinals. With their strong performance against Switzerland, the Americans are looking like serious contenders for the gold medal at this year’s World Junior Championship.
