File this under “Reasons Why TikTok Shouldn’t Get Banned.” In case you didn’t know, country music singer and former frontman of Hootie & The Blowfish (to be clear, he’s not Hootie ) Darius Rucker is great friends with movie star Woody Harrelson. The pair crossed paths at some point and hit it off, and have been close ever since. They became even closer when Harrelson apparently saved Rucker’s life , which Darius detailed in his memoir titled Life’s Too Short. The book opened up its very first chapter with a non-music-related story, and it was a wild one to say the least. Remember learning in school that you should grab the attention of your reader when you first start out? Rucker accomplished that and then some telling the story about how the Hollywood actor kept him from drowning. When Rucker stopped by Today last summer to talk about his new book, he was asked about that story, and he happily got into some of the specifics of the scary event during the interview: “Woody is my brother. Woody and I are really, really close, and I went to visit him in Hawaii and we went swimming. And I’ll never forget this… I got caught up in this rip current, and it was just killing me. He came back and we were trying to get out. It was probably a good 40 minutes of trying to get out.” They eventually were able to get back to shore, even after Rucker encouraged Harrelson to leave him behind by saying that they both “didn’t have to die” out in the ocean. I’d be willing to bet that an experience like that brings two friends together that much more, and from what we know, the duo still carve time out of their busy lives to hang out with one another. Thanks to TikTok, we found out that Rucker and Harrelson were together rather recently, and it appears they were out to eat in Charleston, South Carolina. That would check out, since Rucker owns a home in the historic city. As they were out and about, some young women recognized Rucker, and asked for a picture. However, they did not recognize Harrelson, as she explained in her TikTok’s overlaid caption: “One time my friend and I saw Darius Rucker at a bar and we asked his friend to take a photo of us. Darius was laughing and kept saying, ‘I’m gonna tell this story.’ We then saw people asking to take photos with his friend. We asked Woody Harrelson to take a photo OF us.” Hilariously, Darius Rucker’s friend – who just so happened to be Woody Harrelson – snapped a selfie as he was also taking the photo of the two young women posing next to the country star. She included the selfie of Harrelson in her post, and the TikTok went viral. Maybe they were just blinded by the fact that they were meeting Darius Rucker and they’re brains couldn’t comprehend that his friend could be the award winning actor? It seems as though Harrelson handled not being recognized in a very comedic fashion, kindly taking the phone and capturing the moment with the celebrity they had requested a picture with. It went viral enough to be featured on Carson Daly’s “PopStart” segment on Today : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7FOacIyh2A

A woman recently ran into Darius Rucker and asked his “friend” to take a cute photo of them — but she later realized that friend was actor Woody Harrelson who left behind a selfie to mark the humorous encounter.

I had the most incredible encounter today at a local coffee shop. As a huge fan of both Darius Rucker and Woody Harrelson, I couldn’t believe my luck when I spotted Woody sitting at a table nearby.

Feeling a surge of courage, I approached him and asked if he would mind taking a photo of me with a Darius Rucker poster I had just purchased. To my surprise, Woody not only agreed but also took multiple shots to make sure we got the perfect picture.

I couldn’t stop smiling as I thanked him profusely and walked away, feeling like the luckiest fan in the world. It just goes to show that you never know who you might run into, and sometimes your idols can turn out to be even more amazing in person. Thank you, Woody Harrelson, for making my day! #DariusRucker #WoodyHarrelson #FanEncounter

  • Darius Rucker Is ‘Still Laughing’ About Fans Asking Friend Woody Harrelson to Take Picture

Darius Rucker‘s friend Woody Harrelson takes a pretty good picture.

The “Wagon Wheel” singer, 58, shared screengrabs from a fan’s TikTok on Wednesday, Jan. 15 in an Instagram post from a night out with the True Detective actor when he took a photo of him with fans — without recognizing Harrelson, 63.

“Storytime. One time my friend & I saw Darius Rucker at a bar and we asked his friend to take a photo of us,” the text on the social media post read. “Darius was laughing and kept saying ‘I’m gonna tell this story.’ “

The fans later realized who was taking the picture of Rucker and the fans: three-time Academy Award-nominated actor Harrelson.

“We asked Woody Harrelson to take a photo OF us,” the text continued. “His friend.”

“Luckily,” the fans said, the White House Plumbers actor left them a selfie on their phone as well. Rucker captioned the post “Still laughing @woodyharrelson.”

Country stars found the interaction hilarious. “I saw this on tiktok and cackled ,” singer Hannah Ellis wrote. Brothers Osborne‘s TJ and John called the tale “incredible.”

Fans recalled times when similar incidents happened to them. “One time my date at a Wizards game asked Stephen A. Smith to take our photo and I think he almost spontaneously combusted,” one person said.

Another wrote about not knowing they spent an elevator ride laughing it up with Larry David ahead of his comedy set.

Rucker and Harrelson had been friends for decades. In Rucker’s 2024 memoir Life’s Too Short, he recalled when Harrelson had saved him from drowning in Hawaii during a tour break in the late 1990s after getting stuck in a powerful current.

“I feel as if some horrific giant squid has lashed itself around my body, circling and tightening its tentacles around my legs, dragging me under the water,” Rucker recalled.

“I gulp and I gasp and I keep fighting. I fight and flail for I have no idea how long — ten minutes, fifteen — and then I hear a voice. Woody.”

They wound up caught in the current and treaded water for 30 minutes until their friend Kirk came. Harrelson and Kirk could pull Rucker out of the current and back to the beach.

Darius Rucker Is ‘Still Laughing’ About Fans Asking Friend Woody Harrelson to Take Picture

Country music star Darius Rucker recently found himself in a hilarious situation when fans mistook his friend, actor Woody Harrelson, for a photographer. Rucker shared the amusing anecdote on social media, revealing that fans approached Harrelson asking him to take a picture of them with Rucker.

Rucker couldn’t help but chuckle at the mix-up, as Harrelson is known for his acting chops, not his photography skills. The singer joked that he was “still laughing” about the incident and thanked Harrelson for being a good sport about it.

It just goes to show that even celebrities can find themselves in funny and unexpected situations. And who knows, maybe Harrelson has found a new hidden talent as a photographer!
