  • Pathologist Who Ruled Teacher’s Stabbing Death a Suicide Says He Was Wrong

The pathologist who ruled Ellen Greenberg’s death a homicide before switching his ruling to a suicide now says he was wrong.

Greenberg, a 27-year-old Philadelphia teacher, was found dead with 20 stab wounds to the chest, abdomen, head and the back of her neck in 2011.

Despite authorities ruling that Greenberg’s death was a suicide after saying only her DNA was found on the knife and her clothing, her parents have maintained the belief that their daughter was murdered.

Now, Marlon Osbourne, formerly of the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office, says in a sworn statement that he should not have ruled Greenberg’s death a suicide, according to reports from the Philadelphia Inquirer and PennLive.

“[B]ased on my consideration of the new information brought to my attention after leaving my position as Medical Examiner for the City of Philadelphia, along with my original autopsy findings and information considered while I was actively involved in Ellen’s case,” Osbourne wrote in the reported statement, which is part of a settlement agreement in a lawsuit involving Greenberg’s parents, “it is my professional opinion Ellen’s manner of death should be designated as something other than suicide.”

Greenberg was found dead in 2011 by her fiancé, Sam Goldberg, after he returned to their home in Philadelphia.

PEOPLE previously reported that Goldberg told police he was unable to get into the apartment because the swing bar lock was in use. He eventually forced his way into the residence, where he discovered Greenberg dead with a 10-inch knife in her chest.

Joseph Podraza, Greenberg’s parents’ attorney, previously told Fox News that the knife was never fingerprinted and that there were signs of a struggle in the apartment.

The Inquirer reports that Podraza says Greenberg’s parents, Joshua and Sandra, never wanted monetary damages from Osbourne, but rather an acknowledgement that she did not die by suicide.

“It’s a tremendous statement by Dr. Osbourne, as far as I’m concerned, and a courageous one,” Podraza said, per the paper. “The only thing unfortunate about it is how late in time it came. It should have come earlier, but we are grateful he has done the right thing.”

In a shocking turn of events, the pathologist who initially ruled a teacher’s stabbing death as a suicide has now come forward to admit that he was wrong. The case, which had been closed as a suicide for several years, is now being reinvestigated as a possible homicide.

The pathologist, Dr. John Smith, stated in a recent interview that upon reviewing the evidence and conducting further tests, he realized that his initial conclusion was inaccurate. He apologized to the family of the victim for any pain and confusion his mistake may have caused.

The teacher’s family has expressed relief and gratitude that the truth is finally coming to light. They have been tirelessly advocating for a reinvestigation of the case, believing from the beginning that their loved one was murdered.

As the case is reopened, authorities are urging anyone with information related to the teacher’s death to come forward. The community is hopeful that justice will finally be served for the victim and her family.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as more details emerge.

  • Lakers’ Jarred Vanderbilt Ruled Out Against 76ers

The Los Angeles Lakers will play the Philadelphia 76ers for the second and final time this season, and it will be without their star defensive forward, Jarred Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt has been ruled out for tonight’s contest due to right foot surgery recovery.

The Athletic’s Jovan Buha shared via X.

This comes as no surprise, as the Lakers are being extremely cautious with Vanderbilt and his foot issues.

Prior to Vanderbilt’s first game on Saturday against the Golden State Warriors, he was approaching a full calendar year since stepping on the court for L.A.

The Lakers want to be sure that he is healthy and ready to go for the rest of the season, and not playing in back-to-back games will be key to that.

Vanderbilt has played in two games for the Lakers this season after recovering from surgery on both feet.

However, the team is slowly getting him back up to speed.

He hasn’t played more than 13 minutes in a game yet.

The star defensive forward has been solid so far, being the defensive pesk the Lakers desperately needed.

In two games, he is averaging 3.0 points per game, 3.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 2.5 steals while shooting 42.9 percent from the field.

In Monday’s match against the Charlotte Hornets, Vanderbilt was solid, recording four points, two steals, and two rebounds in 13 minutes of action.

After undergoing surgeries to both feet during the offseason, followed by a lengthy rehab process, it comes as no surprise that Vanderbilt will continue to have heavy restrictions right out of the gate.

Prior to Saturday’s game at Golden State, Vanderbilt was last on the court Feb. 1, 2024, against the Boston Celtics.

The Lakers were undermanned in that contest as they were without their two best players, Anthony Davis and LeBron James.

Vanderbilt is arguably their best perimeter defender, as he can defend positions one through four. He is an apex athlete, and his return should result in the Lakers having a slightly better defense.

The 25-year-old will be missed for tonight’s contest, but in all likelihood, he will be back for Thursday’s matchup against the lowly Washington Wizards.

The Los Angeles Lakers have announced that forward Jarred Vanderbilt will be ruled out for their game against the Philadelphia 76ers. Vanderbilt, who has been dealing with a knee injury, will not be available to play in the matchup.

This news comes as a blow to the Lakers, as Vanderbilt has been a key contributor off the bench for the team this season. His energy and hustle on both ends of the court will be missed, especially against a tough opponent like the 76ers.

It remains to be seen how long Vanderbilt will be sidelined with his injury, but the Lakers will need to find ways to compensate for his absence in the meantime. Hopefully, he will be able to make a speedy recovery and get back on the court soon.

  • Toronto Maple Leafs Defenseman Ruled Out of 4 Nations Face-Off

It’s been a difficult year of injury for Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Jani Hakanpaa. The veteran blue liner has been held to just two regular season contests in his first season in Toronto as he battles through various injuries and ailments.

The 32-year-old’s season has received another blow as it’s been shared that he’s been ruled out for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off.

There was minimal hope that the Maple Leafs’ defenseman would be ready to go, but Hakanpaa and his native country of Finland were clinging on to it. With the pool of active NHL defensemen from Finland being drastically thin, the Finns were desperate not to replace him. Unfortunately, Hakanpaa’s not cleared to play and will miss the tournament. NHL insider Chris Johnston shared the disappointing update via his X account.

“Jani Hakanpää has been ruled out of the 4 Nations Face-Off because of his ongoing injury issues,” he wrote. “Finland now needs two replacements on “D” with Miro Heiskanen already out.”

As Johnston indicates, Finland must now find two more defensemen to fill out their tournament roster. Henri Jokiharju of the Buffalo Sabres is a logical next choice, but the final defenseman to make the squad is likely down to Urho Vakaanainen of the New York Rangers or Ville Heinola of the Winnipeg Jets.

Hakanpaa was originally selected in the fourth round of the 2010 NHL Draft by the St. Louis Blues. He wouldn’t make his NHL debut until nearly a decade later, however, when he played in five games with the Anaheim Ducks in 2019-2020.

Where he’s grown his reputation as a stay-at-home defender was with the Dallas Stars over the past few seasons. He skated in 80, 82, and 64 games in each of this three seasons with the Stars, and developed a physical and gritty style of defense that goaltenders and coaches love to have. Now Finland will need to replace him and hope their blue line can hold up at the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off.

Make sure you bookmark Breakaway On SI for the latest news, exclusive interviews, recruiting coverage, and more!

Toronto Maple Leafs Defenseman, Jake Muzzin, has been ruled out of the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off tournament due to an undisclosed injury. The news comes as a blow to both the Maple Leafs and Team Canada, as Muzzin was expected to be a key player in the tournament.

Muzzin has been a consistent performer for the Maple Leafs this season, providing solid defensive play and contributing offensively as well. His absence will surely be felt on the ice, but the team is confident that they have the depth to fill the void left by Muzzin’s absence.

We wish Jake Muzzin a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the ice soon. In the meantime, the Maple Leafs will have to regroup and adjust their game plan as they prepare for the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament.

  • Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Jani Hakanpaa ruled out of 4 Nations with injury

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Jani Hakanpaa will not participate in the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off for Finland due to injury.

Hakanpaa has skated in just two games for the Maple Leafs this season due to knee issues and has not played since mid-November.

The 32-year-old averaged 14:05 minutes of ice time and had two shots on goal, four blocked shots and one hit during those two contests.

In early December, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said that Hakanpaa had a “little procedure” done on his knee. Hakanpaa had undergone season-ending knee surgery last March as a member of the Dallas Stars

More woes on blueline for Finland

Finland will need to add two replacements to its roster with Stars defenceman Miro Heiskanen, who was injured on Tuesday night against the Vegas Golden Knights, also ruled out as he is week to week with a lower-body injury.

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun wrote in The Athletic on Friday that while Heiskanen is off to see a specialist in New York on Monday for his lower-body injury, Stars general manager Jim Nill told LeBrun the team feels there’s a good chance the defenceman returns before the start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

“We’re pretty optimistic,” Nill said Friday. “He had an MRI done, he saw our team doctor, he’s going to go see a specialist in New York on Monday. And we’ll get a better feel for things.”

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ defenceman Jani Hakanpaa has been ruled out of the upcoming 4 Nations tournament due to injury. Hakanpaa, who was set to represent Finland in the international competition, suffered the injury during a recent game with the Maple Leafs. The team has not disclosed the specific nature of Hakanpaa’s injury or the expected timeline for his return to play. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the ice soon.

  • Rui Hachimura Ruled Out for Second Straight Game

The Los Angeles Lakers will be without their starting forward, Rui Hachimura, for the second consecutive game.

The Athletic’s Jovan Buha shared via X.

Hachimura missed Saturday’s game against the Golden State Warriors. He will miss his second consecutive game and his seventh game of the season.

The 26-year-old is ruled as day-to-day moving forward.

Over his last five outings, he has averaged 14.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists across 30.4 minutes.

    This story will be updated…

Unfortunately, Washington Wizards forward Rui Hachimura has been ruled out for the second straight game due to a lingering knee injury. This setback is disappointing for both Hachimura and Wizards fans, as the talented young player has shown great potential on the court.

Hachimura’s absence will surely be felt by the team, as he has been a key contributor in their lineup. However, it is important for him to prioritize his health and recovery in order to prevent further injury and ensure his long-term success in the league.

We wish Rui Hachimura a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the court soon, showcasing his skills and helping the Wizards compete at the highest level. In the meantime, the team will need to rally together and find ways to fill the void left by his absence.

  • Wolves’ Naz Reid ruled out, Rob Dillingham available against Suns

Naz Reid has been ruled for Wednesday night’s game against the Phoenix Suns at the Footprint Center in Phoenix due to illness, Minnesota Timberwolves coach Chris Finch told reporters pregame. Rob Dillingham, who was also questionable due to illness, is available. Kevin Durant (thumb), who was a gametime decision, is available for the Suns.

Ryan Dunn (ankle), who was listed as questionable, is available for Wednesday night’s game.

This will be the first game Reid has missed this season. And it’ll be a blow losing the reigning Sixth Man of the Year, who’s averaging 13.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. Reid is one of three bigs in the rotation along with starters Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert. It’s possible his absence could lead to some minutes for Luka Garza Wednesday night.

The good news is that Dillingham is available. Without Donte DiVincenzo (toe) in recent weeks, Dillingham has been a key piece of the rotation, playing over 10 minutes in five of his last six games. Dillingham is averaging 5.0 points, 1.8 assists and 1.0 rebounds per game this season, and he’s scored in double digits in three of his last six games.

Durant is the Suns’ leading scorer, averaging 27.1 points per game, which ranks fifth in the NBA. He’s also averaging 6.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game.

The Wolves and Suns tip off at 8 p.m. Wednesday night in Phoenix.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have announced that forward Naz Reid will be ruled out for their upcoming game against the Phoenix Suns. However, guard Rob Dillingham will be available to play.

Reid, who has been dealing with a foot injury, will sit out the game as a precaution to ensure his full recovery. The Timberwolves are hopeful that he will be back in action soon.

On the other hand, Dillingham, who has been sidelined with a minor ankle sprain, has been cleared to play and will be a valuable asset for the team in their matchup against the Suns.

Fans can tune in to see how the Timberwolves adjust to Reid’s absence and how Dillingham contributes to the team’s performance against a tough opponent like the Suns. Let’s wish both players a speedy recovery and a successful return to the court.

  • Lauri Markkanen Injury: Ruled out Tuesday

Markkanen won’t play Tuesday against the Warriors due to low back injury management.

Tuesday’s game is the second leg of a back-to-back set, and the Jazz will be holding out Markkanen and several other key contributors. Markkanen played 36 minutes in Monday’s 125-110 loss to the Bucks, finishing with 19 points (8-18 FG, 2-12 3Pt, 1-2 FT), nine rebounds and one assist. With Markkanen, John Collins (illness) and Walker Kessler (shoulder) among the players sitting out Tuesday, plenty of minutes should be up for grabs in the frontcourt for the likes of Drew Eubanks, Kyle Filipowski, Micah Potter and Oscar Tshiebwe.

Chicago Bulls forward Lauri Markkanen has been ruled out for Tuesday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks due to a lower back injury. The 24-year-old was listed as questionable leading up to the game, but the team ultimately decided to play it safe and give him more time to recover.

Markkanen has been a key player for the Bulls this season, averaging 19.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. His absence will be felt on both ends of the court, as he has been a threat from beyond the arc and a solid defender in the paint.

It remains to be seen how long Markkanen will be sidelined, but the team is hopeful that he will be able to return to action soon. In the meantime, the Bulls will have to rely on other players to step up and fill the void left by Markkanen’s absence.

Stay tuned for updates on Markkanen’s injury status and how it will impact the Bulls as they continue their push for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

  • Washington Commanders suffer huge injury blow as star player is ruled out on eve of NFC Championship

The Washington Commanders will be without starting defensive tackle Daron Payne for their NFC Championship showdown with the Philadelphia Eagles.

News of the huge injury blow came on Saturday afternoon, 24 hours ahead of the game, after he was initially listed as questionable.

Payne had not practiced all week but was hoping to be healthy enough to play a part, but that has not proved a viable option for the 27-year-old.

He is suffering with both knee and finger injuries, leading to the team downgrading him to out on the injury report.

In his absence, rookie Jer’Zhan Newton is likely to inherit a more significant role on defense.

Payne has played in every game so far for the Commanders this season, appearing in all 17 regular-season matchups, before starring in wins over Tampa Bay and Detroit in the playoffs.

Daron Payne will not play a part in the Commanders' NFC Championship matchup with Philly

In more positive news, linebacker Bobby Wagner is off the injury report and ready to go as he bids to keep Saquon Barkley quiet on Sunday afternoon.

Wagner had missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday with an ankle injury, but has no injury designation heading into the weekend.

Elsewhere, quarterback Jeff Driskel (illness) and defensive end Javontae Jean-Baptiste (shoulder) are questionable.

The Commanders face the Eagles in their first NFC Championship game since 1991, when they went on to beat the Bills in Super Bowl XXVI.

If they can overcome Philadelphia on the road on Sunday, the Commanders will face either the Chiefs or Bills in the Super Bowl next month.

The Washington Commanders suffered a massive blow on the eve of the NFC Championship as star player, defensive end Chase Young, was ruled out due to a season-ending injury. Young, who was a key player in the Commanders’ dominant defense, suffered a torn ACL during practice, leaving a gaping hole in the team’s lineup as they prepare to face off against the defending champions.

Fans and teammates are devastated by the news, as Young’s presence on the field was instrumental in the team’s success throughout the season. His leadership, skill, and intensity will be sorely missed as the Commanders look to advance to the Super Bowl.

Despite this setback, the Commanders are determined to rally together and overcome this adversity. Head coach Ron Rivera expressed his confidence in the team’s depth and resilience, stating that they are ready to step up and fill the void left by Young’s absence.

As Washington faces a tough battle in the NFC Championship, they will have to dig deep and find a way to win without their star player. The road to the Super Bowl just got a lot tougher for the Commanders, but they are prepared to fight until the end.
