  • Illinois has registered 76 wins in league play since the start of the 2019-20 season, one behind Purdue for the most in the conference over the last six seasons. And when including the conference tournament, the Illini have 81 wins during this time span, also one behind Purdue’s mark.

  • The Illini won the 2024 Big Ten Tournament championship as the #2 seed, captured the regular season championship in 2022, and led the conference in wins while adding a B1G Tournament crown in 2021, and the team’s three total championships during that span are tied with Purdue for the most in the Big Ten.

  • Following the 2024 Elite Eight appearance and Big Ten Tournament Championship, Illinois has a dramatically different roster this season. The program returns just one rotation player – last year’s ninth-leading scorer Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn – and returns just 2.9% of its minutes, 2.2% of its points, and 2.0% of its rebounds overall.

  • Eight different Illini players have recorded a 20-point game this season, tied for the top mark in the NCAA, and the most by any Big Ten program since at least 2004-05.

  • Newcomers to the Illini roster have accounted for 91.3% of the team’s scoring so far (1,696 of 1,857 total points), with UI freshmen accounting for 41.4% of those points (702).

And Freshman F Morez Johnson Jr. ranks second on the team at 6.9 rebounds per game with a team-leading 59 offensive boards (2.7 per game).

  • At 15.6 points per game, point guard Kasparas Jakucionis is just shy of the Illinois freshman record for scoring average (15.9 ppg) set by Kiwane Garris 31 years ago.

  • Jakucionis has posted four game this season with 20+ points, 6+ rebounds and 5+ assists, tied for third  nationally with Auburn fifth-year senior Johni Broome and Purdue junior Braden Smith.

  • Jakucionis scored 20+ points in six straight games from Nov. 25-Dec. 22, shattering the Illini freshman record for consecutive 20-point games (previous record was two).

  • Jakucionis became the fourth Big Ten freshman since 1996-97 with at least six-straight 20-point games, and the first to do so since Indiana’s Eric Gordon had seven in a row in 2007.

  • Jakucionis has eight 20-point games this season, tying the Illini all-time record for 20-point games by a freshman with Cory Bradford who set the current mark as a redshirt freshman in 1998-99.

  • Over his last 15 games, Jakucionis is averaging 17.3 points (259), 5.6 rebounds (84), and 5.3 assists (80), knocking down an average of 2.1 threes per game (32) on 36.8% from 3-point range (32-87) along with 83.8% from the foul line (67-80).

  • Tomislav Ivisic is the No. 6 rebounder in the Big Ten at 8.6 rpg. Ivisic has led the Illini rebounding effort, which ranks No. 1 nationally in total rebounds per game, in 11 of the 19 games in which he has played.

  • Ivisic, classified as sophomore in his first season of collegiate competition, has recorded eight double-doubles through 19 games, ranking fourth in the Big Ten, tied for 28th in the NCAA overall, and tied for first among power conference underclassmen.

  • Ben Humrichous has knocked down at least one 3-pointer in 20 of 22 games this season. He leads the team and ranks 15th in the Big Ten averaging 1.95 triples per contest.

  • After opening the year averaging 7.1 points and 5.0 rebounds in eight games, Tre White found a rhythm on the court for the Illini. Beginning with a 23-point, 8 rebound effort vs. #20 Wisconsin on Dec. 10, White averaged 12.1 points (157) and 6.2 rebounds (80) the team’s next 13 games, scoring in double figures seven times.

  • Likewise Kylan Boswell is averaging 13.9 points (195), 6.1 rebounds (85), and 3.6 assists (51) in his last 14 games, reaching double-figures scoring 12 times including a career-high 22 points in the Illini’s win at Indiana (Jan. 14).

  • Boswell recorded the seventh triple-double in Illinois history and fifth of the Underwood era against Chicago State (Dec. 29), tallying 18 points, career-high 10 rebounds, and career-high 10 assists.

  • Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn continues to make a big impact for the Illini in his sophomore season. Over his last 12 games, Gibbs-Lawhorn is averaging 10.3 points (124) while shooting 53.6% (45-84) from the field.

  • Gibbs-Lawhorn made the first start of his collegiate career vs. Ohio State (Feb. 2), and was key to the Illini’s 87-79 come-from-behind victory. He posted 10 points highlighted by a momentum-shifting steal and run-out dunk that capped a 12-2 run to pull the Illini to within one possession after OSU’s lead had reached 11 points.

  • Morez Johnson Jr. is also excelling for the Illini. Over his last 12 games Johnson is averaging 8.5 points (102) and 7.6 rebounds (76), highlighted by a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double in the win over Penn State (Jan. 8), a 15-point, nine-rebound effort in his second-career start vs. Northwestern on Jan. 26, and a 14-point, 15-rebound double-double in the team’s come-from-behind win over Ohio State on Feb. 2.

  • Johnson, at 6.9 rebounds per game, is on track to tie Efrem Winters (1982-83) for the second-best freshman mark in Illini history, behind only Kofi Cockburn’s 2019-20 season average (8.8 rpg).

  • Johnson posted his second double-double of the season in Illinois’ Jan. 8 win over Penn State, recording a career-high 20 points and pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds. On Feb. 2, he posted his third double-double with 14 points and a team-season-high 15 rebounds vs. Ohio State.

  • Through 22 games, Johnson has recorded 27 total blocks, tied for sixth in the Illini freshman record book with James Augustine (2002-03). Johnson is on pace to finish his freshman season third among Illini freshmen all-time behind only Deon Thomas (54 in 1990-91) and Kofi Cockburn (44 in 2019-20).

  • Illinois leads the Big Ten in seven team statistical categories, with the following NCAA rankings: total rebounds per game (1st in NCAA; 45.5), defensive rebounds per game (1st; 31.8), rebound margin (1st; 11.7), 3-point attempts per game (6th; 31.0), free-throw attempts per game (18th; 23.7), field goal percentage defense (19th; .395), and offensive rebounds per game (21st; 13.7).

  • Three Illini scored 20+ points vs. Penn State – Ben Humrichous (21), Morez Johnson Jr. (20) and Tre White (20). It marked just the third time in the last 35 seasons that Illinois had a game featuring a trio of 20-point scorers.

  • Illinois’ 32-point road win over #9 Oregon was the largest margin of victory ever by a road team over an AP Top-10 opponent, and the largest road win in Illinois program history against any top-25 opponent.

  • In their 109-77 win at #9 Oregon, Illinois became the first Big Ten team since Feb. 9, 1989, to record 100+ points in a Top-10 road win (No. 10 Michigan defeated No. 8 Iowa, 108-107).

  • Illinois also posted a dominant 94-69 win at Indiana on Jan. 14. The 25-point margin of victory was the second-largest for a Hoosiers’ opponent in Assembly Hall history, while Illinois’ 94 points marked the most ever scored by a visiting team in a regulation game at Assembly Hall.

  • Rutgers’ Dylan Harper out vs. Michigan, missing 2nd straight

Rutgers star freshman Dylan Harper is out for Saturday’s game against Michigan, per the Big Ten injury report.

Harper suffered a sprained ankle against Penn State on Jan. 20 and aggravated it in the following game against Michigan State. He sat out Wednesday’s loss to Northwestern, after which coach Steve Pikiell said Harper was dealing with a high ankle sprain.

The New Jersey native missed a game and was hampered in others earlier this season with the flu.

Despite the setbacks, Harper has been one of the elite freshmen in college basketball, averaging 18.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. In back-to-back games in late November, he went for 36 points against Notre Dame and 37 points against Alabama.

The 6-foot-6 guard is No. 2 in ESPN’s NBA draft rankings.

Without Harper against Northwestern, fellow freshman star Ace Bailey — the No. 3 prospect in ESPN’s draft rankings — went for 37 points on 13-for-20 shooting.

    Rutgers (11-10, 4-6 Big Ten) hosts Michigan (15-5, 7-2) at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Rutgers’ Dylan Harper out vs. Michigan, missing 2nd straight

Rutgers fans will have to wait a little longer to see star player Dylan Harper back in action, as he will be sitting out for the second consecutive game due to injury. Harper, who has been a key player for the Scarlet Knights this season, will be sorely missed as they take on Michigan in their upcoming matchup.

The absence of Harper is a major blow for Rutgers, as he has been averaging double-digit points and rebounds per game this season. His presence on the court has been instrumental in the team’s success, and his absence will surely be felt in this important game against Michigan.

Despite Harper’s absence, Rutgers will need to rally together and step up in his absence to secure a victory. Fans will be eagerly awaiting his return to the court, but in the meantime, they will have to cheer on their team without him.

We wish Dylan Harper a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the court soon. In the meantime, let’s show our support for the Scarlet Knights as they take on Michigan without their star player. #GoScarletKnights

    Preview

About Rutgers: Led by projected top-five NBA Draft picks Ace Bailey (20.7 points per game, 1st in the Big Ten) and Dylan Harper (18.6 pig, 4th in the Big Ten), the Scarlet Knights have plenty of size and athleticism, but have struggled to make it count against fellow power-conference opponents, as they enter the weekend 11-10.

So far this season, Rutgers has been a two-man game, with both Bailey and Harper averaging more than 11.0 points per game more than any of their teammates. So far this season, the duo has attempted 44.8 percent of Rutgers’ field-goal attempts.

Stylistically, Rutgers leans into its physicality, averaging 21.9 free-throw attempts per game and ranking 258th in percentage of field-goal attempts coming from 3-point range. Defense has been a weak point at times — 211th in points per possession allowed, 107th in KenPom’s adjusted defensive efficiency — but Rutgers has scored quadrant-1 wins over UCLA, at Nebraska, and at Northwestern on Wednesday.

Matchup to watch: With Harper out to injury, the matchup of Bailey vs. Michigan’s Danny Wolf will be the key matchup. Bailey, who scored 37 points in Rutgers’ win Wednesday, is averaging a Big Ten-leading 20.7 points per game to go with 7.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. The 6-foot-10, 200-pounder can score at every level, as he is currently the only high-major player in the country with at least 40 made field goals each from 3, the midrange and by the rim, per BartTorvik.com. Bailey has scored 17 points or more in six straight games, and at least 15 points in all but three games this season.

On the other side, Wolf has been in something of a slump lately. In Michigan’s last five games, Wolf has 10.6 points per game (he averaged 14.6 the prior nine games), is shooting 36.2 percent from the field (previously was 58.7 percent from the field) and has struggled especially to make a different in the first half of games.

How well Wolf can defend Bailey’s scoring by himself, and what he’s bringing to Michigan’s offense on the other end, will go a long way in this matchup

    Keys for Michigan

    • Keep Bailey contested. Odds are that Bailey will score a lot, draw fouls and control his matchup at times. But keeping him inefficient on his shots will limit Rutgers’ chances, especially with Harper out.
    • Match the Scarlet Knights’ physicality. Rutgers wants Saturday to be a bruising game for the Wolverines, and has played like it for much of Big Ten play. Just a few days after Dusty May said he wants his team to show more physicality, Saturday offers a test on the Wolverines’ ability to win a grittier game.
    • Get area 50-1 going. In addition to Wolf’s slump above, Vlad Goldin is coming off a four-point, 17-minute performance affected by an illness. If he and Wolf can come out strong Saturday, Rutgers will struggle to keep pace with the Wolverines.

Be sure to join the discussion in the comments section for updates before, during and after the game!

Michigan Wolverines are hitting the road once again as they gear up to face off against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in a Big Ten clash. After a tough loss in their last game, Michigan is looking to bounce back and secure a much-needed win to stay in the hunt for the conference title.

The Wolverines have been showing flashes of brilliance this season, with standout performances from key players like Hunter Dickinson and Eli Brooks. However, they will need to bring their A-game against a tough Rutgers team that has been playing well and will be looking to defend their home court.

This game will be a test of both teams’ skills and determination, as they battle it out for crucial conference points. Michigan will need to play smart and execute their game plan effectively in order to come out on top.

So, grab your maize and blue gear and get ready to cheer on the Wolverines as they take on Rutgers in what is sure to be an exciting Big Ten showdown. Let’s go Blue!

  • Watch: Gophers wrestler Gable Steveson takes 59-match win streak into Sunday vs. Rutgers

The No. 7 Gophers wrestling team (7-1, 3-1 B1G) welcomes No. 12 Rutgers (11-4, 3-2) to town Sunday at noon.

  • Rutgers cancels DEI conference following Trump executive orders

In response to recent executive orders signed by former President Donald Trump, Rutgers University has made the decision to cancel its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) conference. The conference, which was planned to address important issues surrounding diversity and inclusion on campus, was set to take place next month.

The executive orders issued by Trump aimed to prohibit federal agencies, contractors, and grant recipients from conducting certain types of diversity training that the administration deemed “divisive” or “anti-American.” These orders have sparked controversy and concern among universities and organizations across the country, leading Rutgers to reevaluate its plans for the DEI conference.

In a statement released by Rutgers, university officials expressed disappointment in having to cancel the conference, but emphasized the importance of complying with federal guidelines. They also reassured the community that efforts to promote diversity and inclusion on campus would continue through other means.

Despite the cancellation of the DEI conference, Rutgers remains committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment for all members of its community. Stay tuned for updates on future initiatives and events aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion on campus.

  • Rutgers cancels HBCU event to align with Trump DEI orders

The Rutgers University Center for Minority Serving Institutions announced Thursday that it has canceled an upcoming virtual conference about registered apprenticeship programs as a result of President Trump’s executive orders targeting diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

“We were very excited to bring the HBCUs and Registered Apprenticeship Mini-Conference to you next week,” said the email sent to registered attendees. “Unfortunately, due to President Trump’s Executive Orders … we have been asked to cease all work under the auspices of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility HUB at Jobs for the Future, which the U.S. Department of Labor funds.”

Jobs for the Future, an organization focused on helping college and workforce leaders create equitable economic outcomes for students, runs a national innovation hub focused on improving access to registered apprenticeships for women, people of color and other underrepresented groups.

Located in New Jersey, a blue state for more the 30 years, Rutgers has not faced pressure from state legislators to dismantle DEI. But the cancellation demonstrates the leverage and power the federal government can hold over colleges and universities by threatening to pull funding from programs that don’t comply with the president’s demands.

It’s just the kind of reaction higher ed policy experts and DEI advocates predicted as a result of the Republican agenda.

“That wariness and sort of pre-emptive compliance, even absent direct threats from the federal or state government, might be somewhat universal,” Brendan Cantwell, a professor of education at Michigan State University, told Inside Higher Ed.

“These leaders will be worried about losing their federal funding, which is exactly what DEI opponents want,” added Shaun Harper, a professor of education, business and public policy; the founder of the University of Southern California’s Race and Equity Center; and an Inside Higher Ed opinion contributor.

More cancellations are anticipated in the weeks and months to come as the Trump administration continues to issue executive orders. For instance, Trump’s growing team at the Department of Education announced a series of actions Thursday related to eliminating DEI.

“The Department removed or archived hundreds of guidance documents, reports, and training materials that include mentions of DEI from its outward facing communication channels [and] put employees charged with leading DEI initiatives on paid administrative leave,” agency officials said in a news release. “These actions are in line with President Trump’s ongoing commitment to end illegal discrimination and wasteful spending across the federal government. They are the first step in reorienting the agency toward prioritizing meaningful learning ahead of divisive ideology in our schools.”

Other actions the department has taken include:

    • Dissolving the department’s Diversity and Inclusion Council.
    • Terminating the Employee Engagement Diversity Equity Inclusion Accessibility Council within the Office for Civil Rights.
    • Canceling ongoing DEI training and service contracts that total over $2.6 million.
    • Withdrawing the department’s Equity Action Plan, which was released in 2023 to align with former president Joe Biden’s executive order to advance racial equity and support for underserved communities.

Recently, Rutgers University made the controversial decision to cancel an event celebrating Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in order to align with President Trump’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) executive orders.

The event, which was organized by the university’s Black Student Union, was set to highlight the contributions and achievements of HBCUs in higher education. However, Rutgers officials announced that they were forced to cancel the event due to concerns about violating the new DEI guidelines put forth by the Trump administration.

This decision has sparked outrage among students, faculty, and community members who believe that celebrating HBCUs is crucial in promoting diversity and inclusion on campus. Many are calling on Rutgers to reverse their decision and allow the event to proceed as planned.

It remains to be seen how Rutgers will respond to the backlash and whether they will reconsider their decision in light of the criticism. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
