  • Rutgers cancels conference due to Trump’s DEI orders

The Rutgers University Center for Minority Serving Institutions canceled an upcoming conference indirectly funded through the U.S. Department of Labor, in response to President Donald Trump’s orders for federal agencies to cease diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

It comes as colleges are closely watching a myriad of orders by Trump, including one that would allow U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement agents to take action on college campuses. Another has paused communications from federal health agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, which is responsible for billions in research funding, at least through Feb. 1.

“Unfortunately, due to President Trump’s Executive Orders … we have been asked to cease all work under the auspices of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility HUB at Jobs for the Future, which the U.S. Department of Labor funds,” wrote Marybeth Gasman, executive director of the Rutgers center in an email this week to registered participants of the conference on apprenticeship programs.

» READ MORE: ICE has been freed to make arrests at churches. More immigrants took sanctuary in Philadelphia than anywhere else.

The minority serving center wasn’t the only entity impacted at Rutgers. President Jonathan Holloway in a message to Rutgers leaders Friday noted that several offices had reported receiving stop-work orders for federal grant-funded activities involving diversity, equity and inclusion.

Jobs for the Future, which was funding the conference through a $13 million grant, is a nonprofit that works with education and workforce entities to create equitable economic outcomes. Every partner on that grant ― which came through the nonprofit’s diversity, equity and inclusion hub that is funded by the federal labor department ― was told they had to stop that work, Gasman said in an interview. The grant was scheduled to end in June.

Nearly 100 registrants were scheduled to attend the event next week for historically Black colleges to learn more about paid apprenticeship programs from those that already take part in them, she said. Gasman emphasized that the cancellation had nothing to do with it being an HBCU event, but because of the funding source.

When the grant started, she said there were only two HBCUs doing apprenticeship programs, which are especially helpful for students from low-income families to learn and get paid; now there are 21.

Some have questioned why she canceled the event, she said, but without the funding and none of the staff from Jobs for the Future or its partners able to participate, she would have had to find new staff to participate in a short time.

Holloway in his message to the campus community said, “Know we remain committed to building an inclusive community.”

    ‘Watching in real time’

While the conference cancellation is one example of a concrete action taken in response to a Trump initiative, some higher education officials said it was too early to adequately gauge the impact of the executive orders.

“We are watching in real time as the new administration is putting policies in place,” Kate Shaw, executive director of the Pennsylvania State Board of Higher Education, told the board at its meeting Thursday. “I think it’s a little too early to know exactly what the parameters of those policy changes are going to look like.”

Jonathan A. Epstein, interim executive vice president of the University of Pennsylvania Health System and dean of the Perelman School of Medicine, acknowledged the anxiety among researchers after Trump announced a pause on communication with federal health agencies, including the National Institutes of Health.

NIH provides about $40 billion in funding to 300,000 scientists at about 2,500 universities and research institutions nationwide, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education.

“Please know that we are working with our academic and government relations colleagues to understand and respond to the potential impact of these events,” Epstein wrote in an email obtained by The Inquirer. “We are working closely with your department chairs and institute/center directors, and we remain focused on our strategic priorities.”

The university, he noted, had adapted before “when new information arrived frequently, but the implications for the future were hard to predict,” citing the early days of the pandemic.

“We are tracking events closely and will continue to share information as it becomes available,” he wrote.

Rutgers in a statement said it also was monitoring the pause on meetings, communications and travel at NIH and would provide guidance to faculty and staff as the university learned more.

In an email to faculty and staff, Drexel University said the changes could potentially affect both those projects already awarded and those awaiting funding, but did not recommend stopping research without consulting with the school’s Office of Research & Innovation.

“We are closely monitoring this dynamic situation,” the email said.

The concern among faculty is palpable.

“There’s an extraordinarily high degree of uncertainty in areas where there has been certainty,” said Eric Feldman, chair of Penn’s faculty senate and a law professor, “ … which has led recipients of federal funding to be unsure both of whether or not they will be able to continue their work as funded and has left grantees uncertain as to whether their proposals will be reviewed in a timely and objective manner.”

In addition, potential ICE agent action at colleges has generated discussion on campuses, though it’s unclear what colleges, which are home to some undocumented students, could do.

“Colleges and universities are not immune to federal law, and there are not many options when law enforcement shows up with a warrant,” said one local higher education official, who asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the topic.

Temple University said it has in the past, at least since 2009, been visited by ICE under the Administrative Site Visit and Verification Program.

“We have a protocol in place for handling such visits,” said spokesperson Steve Orbanek. “We expect that we would follow the same or a similar protocol if ICE chooses to come to Temple under other programs.”

The university, he said, follows Temple’s visitor’s policy and coordinates visits with appropriate offices. That covers visitors who come to conduct business at the university.

At Rutgers, Holloway said in his message that the school has received no notice that ICE would be on campus, but doesn’t expect that it would. The university, he said, will not share student records unless required by law, and Rutgers’ police department doesn’t ask or document the immigration status of students unless a serious crime occurs.

“Rutgers is committed to ensuring that any federal enforcement actions on campus adhere to due process, including the requirement of a warrant when necessary,” Holloway said.

Rutgers University Cancels Conference in Response to Trump’s DEI Orders

In a bold move, Rutgers University has decided to cancel an upcoming conference on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) following recent orders from the Trump administration. The conference, which was set to address crucial issues surrounding diversity and inclusivity in higher education, has been called off in response to new directives that threaten to undermine progress in these areas.

The university released a statement explaining their decision, citing concerns about the potential impact of the Trump administration’s orders on their ability to effectively address DEI issues. Rutgers officials expressed disappointment that they were forced to cancel the conference, but emphasized that they must prioritize the well-being and rights of their students and faculty in the face of these new challenges.

The cancellation of the conference serves as a powerful statement of defiance against the Trump administration’s attempts to roll back progress in promoting diversity and inclusivity on college campuses. Rutgers is taking a stand in support of the principles of DEI, and their decision to cancel the conference is a testament to their commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive campus community.

As debates over DEI policies continue to unfold at the national level, Rutgers’ bold move to cancel their conference sends a clear message that they will not back down in the face of threats to diversity and inclusivity. The university’s actions serve as a reminder of the importance of upholding these values in higher education, and their decision to cancel the conference is a powerful act of resistance against attempts to undermine progress in this crucial area.

  • Rutgers cancels DEI conference after Trump executive orders, drawing ire of NJ politicians

Rutgers University has drawn the ire of New Jersey politicians for cancelling a scheduled Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) conference following President Donald Trump’s executive orders on DEI this week.

“We have been asked to cease all work under the auspices of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility HUB at Jobs for the Future, which the U.S. Department of Labor funds,” Rutgers said on Thursday in an email to registered attendees for the canceled Jan. 30 “HBCUs and Registered Apprenticeship Mini-Conference.”

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, both Democratic candidates for governor, took to X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday to denounce the university’s decision.

“Rutgers, and any other schools preemptively pulling DEI programming, is an utter failure of courage in the face of political foolishness,” Baraka posted. “Diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just buzzwords — they are proven strategies that make our workplaces more productive, our students more learned, and our economy stronger and more stable.”

Baraka calling Trump a “bully,” wrote: “I call on all private sector partners, responsible corporations, and those who believe in democracy to stand with our institutions against the threat of defunding.”

Fulop agreed with his fellow Democrat posting “now is no time to cower to bullies.”

    Story continues below photo gallery

He was also critical of the university’s leadership, writing: “Rutgers as an institution has fostered a bully culture for a few years now. One that targets employees with institutional knowledge and memory, which does a disservice to the students. Look no further than the most recent additions to the Board as where the worst of NJ politics and higher education intertwine…”

He pledged that if elected governor: “I will end the university’s bend toward corporate interests and machine favors, and I will nominate retired professors and staff to serve as members of the Board of Governors.”

Others were also critical of Rutgers’ decision to cancel the conference.

“The capitulation continues. These ill-conceived moves are pushing American higher education backwards. We must fight back,” the American Association of University Professors posted.

    Trump DEI executive orders

Trump signed two executive orders this week relating to DEI.

On Monday, he signed “Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing,” which among other things called for the government to terminate “all discriminatory programs, including illegal DEI and “diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility” (DEIA) mandates, policies, programs, preferences, and activities in the Federal Government.”

On Tuesday, Trump issued “Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity,” which claims that the “Federal Government, major corporations, financial institutions, the medical industry, large commercial airlines, law enforcement agencies, and institutions of higher education have adopted and actively use dangerous, demeaning, and immoral race- and sex-based preferences under the guise of so-called “diversity, equity, and inclusion” (DEI) or “diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility” (DEIA) that can violate the civil-rights laws of this Nation.”

The order calls on “all executive departments and agencies to terminate all discriminatory and illegal preferences, mandates, policies, programs, activities, guidance, regulations, enforcement actions, consent orders, and requirements.”

Rutgers University’s decision to cancel its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) conference following President Trump’s recent executive orders has sparked controversy and criticism from New Jersey politicians.

The university announced the cancellation of the conference, which was set to address issues of racial equality and social justice, citing concerns over potential legal implications of the executive orders. The orders, which target diversity training programs that address systemic racism and sexism, have been met with backlash from civil rights groups and activists.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, along with several state lawmakers, have condemned Rutgers’ decision to cancel the conference, arguing that it is a violation of free speech and academic freedom. In a statement, Governor Murphy said, “Rutgers’ decision to cancel the DEI conference is a troubling example of the chilling effect that these executive orders are having on institutions of higher education.”

State Senator Teresa Ruiz echoed these sentiments, stating, “Rutgers should be a place where diverse perspectives are welcomed and celebrated, not silenced. This decision sends a dangerous message to students, faculty, and the community at large.”

The controversy surrounding Rutgers’ cancellation of the DEI conference highlights the ongoing debate over the role of diversity and inclusion efforts in higher education and society at large. As the university faces criticism from politicians and advocates, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact its reputation and commitment to promoting social justice and equality.

  • How to watch Michigan State vs. Rutgers – NCAA Men’s Basketball (1/25/25) | Channel, stream, preview

NEW YORK — An exciting game at a historic venue is on tap for Saturday afternoon in the Big Apple, as the Michigan State Spartans get set to do battle with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Madison Square Garden.

The Spartans are no longer being considered just the best team in the Big Ten, they’re being viewed as one of the top teams in the entire country. With a marquee win over nationally-ranked Illinois this past Sunday, Michigan State has worked its way into the top 10 in the latest polls, putting the team’s name up with the likes of Kentucky, Houston and Tennessee.

The rise in MSU’s status is thanks to its 11-game win streak, featuring wins over ranked opponents such as North Carolina. They have a very balanced offensive attack led by Jaden Akins, the only player averaging double digits so far this season.

The Spartans take on a Rutgers team with a pretty up-and-down start to their conference schedule. Rutgers lost a close one on the road against Penn State this past Monday, which derailed a short two-game win streak. Granted, that followed up a three-game losing streak for the team, all in Big Ten play. The Scarlet Knights have shown they can hang with some of the better teams in the conference, but don’t have enough finishers to come out on top on a consistent basis.

The Spartans sit first in the B1G as the only undefeated team remaining in conference play. Rutgers is tied for 12th, 3.5 games back of MSU.

  • Tom Izzo, Michigan State basketball try to solve Rutgers, NYC

EAST LANSING — Madison Square Garden has been unkind to Tom Izzo.

Rutgers hasn’t been much more hospitable to No. 8 Michigan State in recent years, either.

The Big Ten-leading Spartans (16-2, 7-0), winners of 11 straight, face Rutgers (10-9, 3-5) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the iconic venue in New York. It will be the Scarlet Knights’ first game televised nationally on CBS since the 1991 NCAA tournament and their first in the regular season since 1983.

“It’s gonna be Fourth of July and Christmas for them,” Izzo said Wednesday. “But it’s gonna be kind of exciting for us. And I just hope that we continue to play with the energy that we’ve had and kind of build on the consistency.”

Michigan State's head coach Tom Izzo, left, and Rutgers' head coach Steve Pikiell talk following the Spartans victory over the Scarlet Knights on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2023

MSU is 4-17 all-time at the Garden, considered one of the meccas of basketball in America. Izzo is 4-13, with his last win coming against Wisconsin in the 2018 Big Ten tournament, in its lone New York appearance.

It’s no secret that Tom Izzo and the Michigan State basketball team are facing a tough challenge in solving the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, especially on their home turf in New York City. The Spartans have had a tough time in recent matchups against Rutgers, and now they are looking for ways to break through and come out on top.

Izzo, known for his strategic coaching and ability to adapt to different opponents, will surely be putting in extra effort to analyze Rutgers’ playing style and come up with a game plan to counter their strengths. The Spartans will need to bring their A-game and work together as a cohesive unit to overcome the tough defense and aggressive play of the Scarlet Knights.

With the Big Ten tournament looming, Michigan State knows they need to find a way to solve Rutgers and secure a crucial win. The team will be looking to their leaders and key players to step up and make the necessary plays to come out victorious.

As the Spartans gear up for this important matchup, fans can expect an intense and exciting game as both teams battle it out on the court. Will Tom Izzo and Michigan State be able to solve Rutgers and come out on top in NYC? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure – it’s going to be a game you won’t want to miss. Let’s go Spartans!

  • Live Updates: #1 Penn State vs #14 Rutgers 2025

The undefeated #1 ranked Nittany Lions of Penn State are in Jersey to wrestle the #14 Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Penn State will be very large favorites, as they will be all year in all their dual meets and in the NCAA Championships in the team title race.

But there will be some great matchups in Jersey Mike’s Arena on Rutgers’ Livingston campus in Piscataway, NJ. Plus any opportunity to witness a historically great team like the 2024-25 Nittany Lions is one worth taking advantage of!

The first bout is scheduled to take place at 8:00 PM ET and will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network. And if you can’t watch the broadcast, no worries,  we’ll be providing updates of the dual right here in real-time!

The updates/live-blog also works great as a recap if you want to catch up on what you missed or refresh your memory after the event ends.

    Projected Lineups

125: #6 Luke Lilledahl (10-0), Penn State vs #15 Dean Peterson (14-3) or Ayden Smith (4-4), Rutgers

133: #7 Braeden Davis (6-2), Penn State vs #9 Dylan Shawver (14-3), Rutgers

141: #3 Beau Bartlett (11-0), Penn State vs #13 Joseph Olivieri (12-3) or Joe Fongaro (4-4), Rutgers

149: #3 Shayne Van Ness (10-1), Penn State vs #24 Andrew Clark (17-7), Rutgers

157: #3 Tyler Kasak (10-0) or Alex Facundo (5-0), Penn State vs Conner Harer (12-5), Rutgers

165: #1 Mitchell Mesenbrink (12-0), Penn State vs #26 Anthony White (12-5) or Andrew Barbosa (5-3), Rutgers

174: #2 Levi Haines (10-1), Penn State vs #23 Jackson Turley (12-5), Rutgers

    184: #1 Carter Starocci (11-0), Penn State vs #19 Shane Cartagena-Walsh (17-5), Rutgers

197: #4 Josh Barr (9-0) or Lucas Cochran (4-0), Penn State vs #17 John Poznanski (11-4) or PJ Casale (7-8), Rutgers

    285: #2 Greg Kerkvliet (11-0), Penn State vs #8 Yaraslau Slavikouski (12-3) or John O’Donnell (7-3), Rutgers

As it’s a home dual for Rutgers, they’ll have a few more options at several weights, whereas Penn State as the away squad with limited backups. There’s a potential for nine ranked matchups tonight (and Conner Harer is right on the bubble at 157) and I think we’ll see most, if not all, of them!

We’re getting started shortly, or maybe have already started, we’re just waiting for BTN to flip over the dual once the Michigan vs Nebraska dual is over.

Nebraska finished their route of the Wolverines with a pinfall at 125 so we should be good to go very soon!

1st period: And away we go! Lilledahl continues his true freshman campaign with another tough test. No scores nor many attacks half way through the first. Down to short time and still nothing much going on. And the period ends no scores, and no stalls, as tied as you can possibly be.

2nd period: Peterson goes underneath first. He sits out and is free in seconds. Barely seconds, literally :02 on the RT clock for Lilledahl. Then more handfighting. Circling and probing but not many level changes. And we’ll got to the third, Peterson with a 1-0 lead.

3rd period: Peterson with an opportunity to ride out for the win. He stops Lilledahl’s first escape attempt but Lilledahl resets and stands to escape on his next opportunity. All tied up 1-1. Lilledahl taking a little bit more ground. Sweep single attempt, and another, both by Luke, but Dean evades. 30 seconds left in regulation. Shot by Peterson, he’s got a leg, Lilledahl rolls through, Peterson says on a leg, grabs the other, and there’s the three! Huge takedown for Dean Pete. 17 seconds left and they’ll get a restart. Lilledahl stands, he can’t shake Peterson, and Peterson hands Lilledahl the first loss of his collegiate career!

125: Dean Peterson, Rutgers over #6 Luke Lilledahl, Penn State 4-1 (Dec)

    Rutgers 3, Penn State 0

133: #7 Braeden Davis, Penn State vs #9 Dylan Shawver, Rutgers

1st period: Another great matchup, this time between two top 10 wrestlers. Shawver trying to hand Davis the second consecutive loss as he dropped a bout to Van Dee of Nebraska yesterday. Shawver is on a three dual win streak. This bout goes a lot like the one before it. No actions or flurries after two minutes. Shawver strikes in short time. He’s in deep but Davis defends and there’s the buzzer. 0-0, no stalls after 3 minutes.

2nd period: Shawver takes bottom. Shawver up to his feet, Davis struggling to bring him to the mat. Crowd and RU coaches want a stall call but they go out of bounds, no call. A few attempts by Shawver that Davis follows. He’s got over a minute of riding. Shawver stands, and now Davis hit with a stall. They go out of bounds in rear standing. Back to referee’s position. Roll attempt by Shawver is followed by Davis. Shawver to his feet. Davis can’t bring him down and another stall call. He maintains control though and he gets the ride out. 1-0 for Shawver though Davis has 2 minutes of riding time.

2nd period: Davis gets a tun underneath. Davis stands. Davis turns into Shawver, close to a reversal, but Shawver gets free and Davis picks up the escape. Riding time will likely get locked up soon. Shawver effectively losing. Davis on a shot, he’s got Shawver’s leg. No takedown yet but it’s chewing up a ton of clock. Shawver scrambling, and potentially dangerous is called with 3 seconds left. Davis will defend as the clock ticks away and he will win 2-1!

133: Braeden Davis, Penn State over Dylan Shawver, Rutgers 2-1 (Dec)

    Rutgers 3, Penn State 3

1st period: We got the Rizzler in the house and ‘BOOM’ t-shirts in the crowd. I’ll learn what all that means later. Now we’ve got Beau and Joey! Bartlett with a leg attack early and the first points are scored, the first of the first period so far in the dual! Quick escape from Olivieri makes it 3-1 in favor of Bartlett. The period ends with no more scores.

2nd period: Olivieri back underneath. He’s out quickly and it’s 3-2 still for Bartlett. About a minute into the period Bartlett strikes again, in on a single, and Olivieri makes him work for it but Beau finishes for three more and it’s 6-2. Bartlett trying to ride tough but a great hip heist as they go out of bounds and Olivieri makes it 6-3 before the period ends. On to the third.

3rd period: Bartlett tries out bottom. And he stands and escapes quickly to run the score up to 7-3. One minute left in regulation, can Olivieri find a way through Bartlett’s defenses? Beau continuing with his ‘one shoe blue, one shoe white’ look this season. Olivieri in deep but Bartlett parries him away, then goes in on a shot and has Olivieri in the air but time runs out before anyone can score. Bartlett with another win!

141: Beau Bartlett, Penn State over Joseph Olivieri 7-3 (Dec)

    Penn State 6, Rutgers 3

149: #3 Shayne Van Ness, Penn State vs Alex Nini, Rutgers

1st period: Rutgers calls an audible and puts true freshman Alex Nini out to face Van Ness, who is looking to bounce back after getting majored by Lovett last week. About a minute in Van Ness finds his way to Nini’s legs and there’s the first points. Nini escapes but Van Ness is back on the attack before Nini can ready himself and it’s 6-1 in a hurry. And Van Ness puts on a punishing ride for the next two minutes. No turns but 1:56 of RT and a 6-1 lead for SVN.

2nd period: Van Ness takes bottom, and he’s out quickly to make it 7-1. Nini on the attack now and he’s in deep on Van Ness’ legs. Great scramble, Nini making Van Ness work but never really had him in danger. Stalemated. Under a minute to go in the second. Now Van Ness back on the attack and he’ll get the takedown. Transition right into a leg turk and chancellor grip and there’s four nearfall for SVN before time runs out. 14-1 Shayne Van Ness and a bonus points are all but assured.

3rd period: Nini takes down and Van Ness cuts him immediately. Shot from Nini, down block go behind for Van Ness and it’s a tech-fall for Van Ness 17-2!

149: Shayne Van Ness, Penn State over Alex Nini, Rutgers 17-2 (TF)

    Penn State 11, Rutgers 3

  • No. 1 UCLA, Betts too much to handle as Rutgers Women’s Basketball loses eighth straight

No. 1 UCLA, Betts too much to handle as Rutgers loses eighth straight

The city of Los Angeles sits at the top of the Big Ten world, and in its first year in the conference, there have been no growing pains, even considering the cross-country travel.

No. 1 UCLA weathered that storm and took down Rutgers 84-66 on Thursday night as the Scarlet Knights (8-12, 0-9) saw their losing streak reach eight consecutive games.

The Bruins (19-0, 7-0) – one of two undefeated teams left in the country along with LSU at 20-0 – overwhelmed Rutgers with its size and passing ability, led by star center Lauren Betts. She finished with an efficient double-double, scoring 25 points on 12-for-16 shooting with 13 rebounds. UCLA had three other scorers in double-figures, with Londynn Jones, Angela Dugalic, and Kiki Rice scoring 12, 11, and 10 points respectively. Rice finished with a double-double with a game-high 10 assists.

Destiny Adams notched her seventh double-double in the last eight games, scoring 15 points and grabbing 13 rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Kiyomi McMiller struggled to start the game but finished leading the Scarlet Knights in scoring with 17 points on 7-for-20 shooting with five rebounds and four assists. JoJo Lacey was the lone other Rutgers player in double-figures with 14 points.

Despite the loss, the Scarlet Knights played a solid game on defense in stretches, trailing 18-12 after the first quarter. The Bruins started the game on a 10-0 run, but a quick adjustment to a zone by Rutgers slowed down UCLA’s offensive momentum and set up the Scarlet Knights to keep the game close.

The Bruins found their offensive groove in the second quarter, scoring 27 points on a blistering 11-for-16 (68.8%) clip from the floor. They also hit five threes as the attention on Betts drew defenders in the paint and left shooters open. They took a 45-29 lead into halftime after a late spurt from Adams on the perimeter.

The biggest difference in the first half was shooting, as the Scarlet Knights were limited to just a 10-for-34 mark (29.4%) in the opening 20 minutes, while UCLA hit half of their 36 attempts from the floor. The offense simply did not hit enough shots to have a chance in the game, a trend that has plagued them for much of the season and the current losing streak.

The second half was closer in scoring margin, however the Bruins never truly felt uncomfortable after the second quarter. Though the Scarlet Knights made multiple runs to try and get back in the game, UCLA’s lead in the second half was never closer than 14 points.

“I think when you play a team like UCLA, they have a lot of weapons, so when we slowed down their interior game they did a good job of throwing it around and knocking down some threes,” Rutgers head coach Coquese Washington said on the Bruins’ adjustments to stretch their lead.

The Scarlet Knights started off with a solid rebounding performance with 12 in the first quarter before UCLA took over with their size, eventually winning the battle on the boards 49-35 for the game.

One aspect Rutgers has improved on throughout the season is taking care of the basketball. The Scarlet Knights managed to win the turnover battle, and scoring off of them, committing only eight turnovers on offense and forcing 12, while scoring 20 points off those turnovers compared to only 8 points off turnovers for UCLA.

Though the Bruins eventyally found their form, the Scarlet Knights fought for all 40 minutes, even bringing UCLA’s lead to within 15 points after leading by as much as 24 earlier in the quarter.

From here, the schedule lightens up – at least in terms of top-end Big Ten talents already over with – but Washington noted the conference is a daily grind no matter who is on the schedule.

“We played the first half of Big Ten play with an incredibly tough schedule,” she said with a sight chuckle. “Yes, it gets easier, but this is the Big Ten. I don’t even know who we play next, wherever we go – I don’t think we’re at home – it’s gonna be tough. It doesn’t get easier, I know it looks easier on paper because of the number before the team, but in the Big Ten, I just think every game is tough.”

Washington also remarked on what she’s learned about her team in spite of losing eight consecutive games.

“What I like about our team is we are continuing to learn how to play together,” she said. “We are continuing to get better defensively, we are continuing to fight and have a resilience and a determination. You see that today, you play the number one team in the country, who just beat Baylor on Monday, and we come out here and give them everything we have. I feel like we take one game at a time and the lessons we learn, they will show up sooner.”

The Scarlet Knights have an opportunity to stack up Big Ten wins in the near future against some of the middling and bottom teams, starting with a road matchup at Penn State, Washington’s former school. The Nittany Lions took down No. 12 Ohio State on Sunday for their first Big Ten win, also giving the Buckeyes their first loss of the season.

Winning against the conference’s lower echelon will be key to secure a spot in the expanded-but-not-fully-inclusive Big Ten Tournament, as that draws near in 41 days.

If Rutgers continues to stack on efforts like tonight’s against the top dog in the country, the wins will show against some of the lower-level teams. The key is consistency, an aspect where the Scarlet Knights have struggled. They have no more games aganist any teams that are currently ranked.

Now is the time to take advantage and snap the skid.

    RHOOPS PLAY OF THE GAME

Destiny Adams beats the first-quarter buzzer with an offensive rebound and reverse layup.

    UP NEXT?

Following the one-game homestand, Rutgers goes back on the road to nearby Penn State to face off against the Nittany Lions on Sunday. The game will tip off at 1pm EST, and will be streamed on Big Ten Plus, with radio broadcasts available on Fox Sports NJ and WRSU-FM.

In a tough matchup against No. 1 UCLA, Rutgers Women’s Basketball couldn’t keep up with the powerhouse team led by star player Betts. The loss marks the Scarlet Knights’ eighth consecutive defeat, highlighting the challenges they face against top-ranked opponents. Despite the setback, the team continues to show resilience and determination as they strive to bounce back in the upcoming games. #RutgersWBB #No1UCLA #Betts #Resilience

Here‘s a women’s college basketball story via the Associated Press:

South Carolina has so far cruised through the difficult part of its conference schedule and remained No. 2 in The Associated Press women’s basketball Top 25 on Monday, picking up a first-place vote to gain a bit of ground on top-ranked UCLA.

The Gamecocks are in the midst of a five-game stretch against ranked opponents. So far they’ve beaten Texas by 17, Alabama by 18 and Oklahoma by 41 on Sunday. They face No. 5 LSU on Thursday and No. 17 Tennessee on Jan. 27.

UCLA received 27 first-place ballots this week while No. 3 Notre Dame got the other two. USC remained No. 4.

After LSU were UConn, Texas and Maryland — the Longhorns routed the Terrapins 89-51 later Monday in the Coretta Scott King Classic — and TCU and Kansas State moved up to ninth and 10th, respectively, after losses by Ohio State and Oklahoma. The Wildcats announced Monday afternoon that Ayoka Lee will be sidelined indefinitely after an X-ray and MRI revealed a fractured bone in her foot. She was injured in Sunday’s win over Arizona State.

    Odds and ends

Tennessee lost at Vanderbilt for the first time since 2014. … Penn State topped Ohio State for its first win over a ranked team since February 2021. … Michigan re-entered the poll at No. 24.

    Conference breakdown

The Southeastern Conference and Big Ten each have seven teams ranked this week, with the ACC right behind with six. With Utah and Oklahoma State dropping out, the Big 12 is down to four teams and the Big East one.

    Ranked Bears

Baylor entered the poll for the first time since the third week of the season. The Bears have won five straight, including a victory over then-No. 23 Utah last week. Nicki Collen’s squad has a difficult week coming up. The Bears lost to No. 1 UCLA 72-57 later Monday in the Coretta Scott King Classic. The Bears next visit No. 9 TCU on Sunday.

    Games of the week

No. 5 LSU at No. 2 South Carolina, Thursday. The undefeated Tigers will try to knock off the Gamecocks in a matchup of two of the best teams in the SEC.

No. 8 Maryland at No. 12 Ohio State, Thursday. The Buckeyes will look to bounce back from their first loss of the season when they host the Terrapins. Maryland also hosts No. 1 UCLA on Sunday.
