The Vegas Golden Knights signed veteran forward Brandon Saad to a one-year contract on Friday. Saad and the St. Louis Blues mutually parted ways earlier this week and he became a free agent.

The Pittsburgh native joins the Golden Knights with 30 games left in the regular season and just four games remaining before the 4Nations Face-Off. Vegas is back on home ice on Feb. 22 to face the Vancouver Canucks at 7 p.m. at T-Mobile Arena. Click here to purchase tickets to all upcoming home games.

    TWO-TIME CHAMP
Saad’s name was etched upon the greatest trophy in sports twice before the forward turned 23 years old. He helped the Chicago Blackhawks capture the Stanley Cup in 2013 and in 2015 early in his career. During the team’s championship run in 2015, Saad recorded 11 points (8G, 3A) in 23 postseason games including two goals in the Stanley Cup Final. He has 55 points (27G, 28A) in 103 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

    SCORING TOUCH
In his 906 career regular season games, Saad has posted 515 points (260G, 255A). He’s hit the 20-goal mark seven times in his career including a career-best 31-goal season in 2015-16 with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He represented Columbus at the 2016 NHL All-Star Game. Saad’s back-to-back 53-point seasons in 2015-16 and 2016-17 with Columbus mark his most productive offensive seasons. He has 47 game-winning goals in his career.

    TIME IN ST. LOUIS
Saad has been with the St. Louis Blues since the 2021-22 season. He racked up 144 points (76G, 68A) in 274 games with the Blues and has 16 points (7G, 9A) in 43 games this season. In 82 games last season, Saad scored 26 times to rank third on the team in goals. He notched the third hat trick of his career with a three-goal performance against the Ottawa Senators on Jan. 3 this season.

    VEGAS CONNECTIONS
During his 14-year NHL career, Saad has played with a few players who he will join on the current Golden Knights roster. He spent parts of two seasons playing with Ivan Barbashev in St. Louis before Barbashev was traded to the Golden Knights ahead of the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs. During Saad’s two seasons in Columbus, he suited up alongside William Karlsson before Karlsson became an original Golden Knight during the 2017 Expansion Draft. At the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, Saad skated alongside Jack Eichel on Team North America.

Brandon Saad is a professional ice hockey player who currently plays left wing for the St. Louis Blues in the NHL. He was born on October 27, 1992, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Saad was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Blackhawks during the 2011-2012 season and quickly made a name for himself as a key player on the team.

During his time with the Blackhawks, Saad won two Stanley Cups in 2013 and 2015. He was known for his speed, scoring ability, and strong defensive play. In 2015, he was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets before returning to the Blackhawks in 2017.

In 2020, Saad was traded to the Colorado Avalanche where he had a successful season before signing with the St. Louis Blues in 2021.

Off the ice, Saad is known for his charitable work and involvement in the community. He is passionate about giving back and making a positive impact in the lives of others.

Overall, Brandon Saad is a talented and hardworking hockey player who has had a successful career in the NHL. Fans can look forward to watching him continue to make an impact on the ice with the St. Louis Blues.

The 32-year-old and Blues agreed to mutually terminate the remainder of his contract, making him a free agent and able to sign with any team in the NHL.

The decision led to him forgoing roughly $5.4 million to become a free agent rather than report to the minors after being placed on waivers.

Saad’s struggles this season have been noted as he’s been held without a goal in 40 of his 43 games this season and has a total of 16 points.

The Pittsburgh native will be looking to regain his prior form where he scored 26 goals last year. He also has two Stanley Cup rings with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013 and 2015.

Prior to signing with the Golden Knights, Saad had been linked to the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs, among others.

  • Blues, Brandon Saad agree to mutual contract termination

The St. Louis Blues have agreed to a mutual contract termination with Brandon Saad, the team announced Wednesday shortly after the veteran forward went unclaimed on waivers.

The 32-year-old forward will give up more than $5 million in salary by agreeing to the termination. In return, he will go on unconditional waivers Thursday, and if he clears, he will become an unrestricted free agent, able to sign elsewhere.

For the Blues, the termination means Saad’s entire $4.5 million cap hit comes off the books.

Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said the team tried to trade Saad before putting him on waivers Tuesday but could not find a suitable deal. He had one more season remaining on the five-year, $22.5 million free-agent contract he signed in 2021.

“If we could find a match, we would,” Armstrong said. “The market speaks and then you just react.”

Over the past four seasons, Saad has played 274 games for the Blues and is tied for the third-most goals on the team with Brayden Schenn and Robert Thomas (76) and is fifth in points (144).

But this season, Saad has just seven goals and 16 points in 43 games and has seen his average ice time drop to 14:36 per game. He has also been a healthy scratch five times.

On Friday, the St. Louis Blues and forward Brandon Saad have agreed to mutually terminate his contract, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent.

Saad, who signed a five-year, $22.5 million contract with the Blues in the offseason, has struggled to find his footing with the team, recording just 13 points in 40 games this season.

Both parties felt it was in the best interest of Saad and the Blues to part ways, giving him the opportunity to explore other options and potentially find a better fit elsewhere.

Saad, a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Chicago Blackhawks, will now look to find a new team to continue his NHL career.

Stay tuned for updates on where Saad may end up next as he hits the open market.

  • St. Louis Blues, Brandon Saad agree to terminate his contract

The St. Louis Blues and Brandon Saad are mutually terminating his contract after he was put on waivers on Wednesday.

Saad will need to go on waivers again before the move can be made official on Thursday.

Saad, 32, will be walking away from $5.425 million in cash owed to him, per PuckPedia. The Blues had tried to trade Saad over the last several months, sources told ESPN, but did not find any partners.

“Obviously the production’s not there,” GM Doug Armstrong said in a midseason news conference on Tuesday. “Right now the cap is tight, and obviously, statistically, he’s not having a great year and he’s got another year left. If we could find a match, we would try.”

Saad has just 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) in 43 games this season, along with a 9.3 shooting percentage — the second worst mark of his 14-year career.

Saad, a two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Chicago Blackhawks, is under contract through the end of next season with a $4.5 million cap hit. Saad would like to continue playing in the NHL, sources said, but the additional year remaining on his contract and the high cap hit was a roadblock for other teams to claim him on waivers Wednesday or agree to a trade. Saad will now be a free agent and can sign with any other team. The Blues would have been charged a $1.15 million cap hit had Saad played for their AHL affiliate in Springfield; the team will now be cleared of his full contract giving them financial flexibility.

It’s already been a season of transition for St. Louis, which fired coach Drew Bannister in November and hired Jim Montgomery after he was let go in Boston.

The Blues are in what Armstrong has called a retool. The team doesn’t feel it can afford a full rebuild and is working to transition on the fly around a new core group of players in their early 20s: Robert Thomas and Jordan Kyrou, as well as Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg who were acquired over the summer from offer sheets.

The St. Louis Blues and forward Brandon Saad have mutually agreed to terminate his contract, the team announced today.

Saad, who signed a five-year deal with the Blues in July 2021, has struggled to find his footing with the team this season, recording just 14 points in 39 games. The decision to part ways comes as a surprise to many, as Saad was expected to be a key contributor to the Blues’ lineup.

“We want to thank Brandon for his time with the organization and wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” said Blues general manager Doug Armstrong in a statement. “We believe this decision is in the best interest of both parties and will allow Brandon to explore other opportunities in the NHL.”

Saad, a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Chicago Blackhawks, will now become an unrestricted free agent and will be free to sign with any team in the league.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Leafs, Golden Knights, Devils, Lightning among teams to watch to sign Brandon Saad

Daily Faceoff President and insider Frank Seravalli shined some details this evening on where Brandon Saad might end up.

The veteran forward has been linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vegas Golden Knights, New Jersey Devils and Tampa Bay Lightning according to Seravalli.

The St. Louis Blues and Saad mutually agreed to terminate his contract. The agreement will see Saad sacrifice his remaining salary for this season as well as the $4.5 million owed next season, the final year of his five-year pact.

The 32-year-old has seven goals and nine assists for 16 points in 43 games this season.

Last season, Saad racked up 26 goals, the most since the 2015-16 season when he played for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Saad finished the season with 42 points in 82 games.

Saad signed a five-year, $22.5 million contract with the Blues as a free agent on July 29, 2021. During his first season with the Blues, Saad tallied 24 goals and 25 assists for 49 points in 78 games, adding five points in 12 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The two-time Stanley Cup champion was recently named to the Chicago Blackhawks Quarter-Century team. The Pittsburgh native spent seven years in Chicago and was a pivotal part of their Stanley Cup runs in 2012-13 and 2014-15. During his time in the Windy City, Saad notched 114 goals and 127 assists for 241 points in 428 regular season contests. Over the course of 906 career games, Saad has tallied 260 goals and 515 points with Chicago, Columbus, Colorado and St. Louis.

Brandon Saad is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and several teams are expected to be interested in signing the talented forward. Among the teams to watch are the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vegas Golden Knights, New Jersey Devils, and Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Maple Leafs are in need of additional scoring depth to complement their star players, and Saad could provide just that. With his combination of skill and physicality, he would be a valuable asset for Toronto.

The Golden Knights have shown a willingness to make big moves in the past, and adding Saad to their already strong lineup could make them even more formidable. His playoff experience and ability to perform in clutch situations could be a perfect fit for Vegas.

The Devils are a young team on the rise, and adding a proven winner like Saad could help accelerate their rebuild. His leadership and experience could be invaluable in helping New Jersey take the next step in their development.

The Lightning are always a threat in the playoffs, and adding a player like Saad to their roster would only make them stronger. His two-way play and ability to contribute on both ends of the ice would be a great fit in Tampa Bay.

Overall, Brandon Saad is sure to attract plenty of interest from teams looking to improve their roster this offseason. Keep an eye on the Leafs, Golden Knights, Devils, and Lightning as potential landing spots for the talented forward.

  • Should Oilers take a chance on Brandon Saad?

EDMONTON — How old is too old?

How many rings won in some other city, for some long-ago champion, is too many? How much experience does a hockey team really need?

As Brandon Saad walks away from $5.1 million in salary that was owed to him by the St. Louis Blues, the team now being run by his old general manager from Chicago — Stan Bowman — is musing about whether he’d be a smart add.

    It begs the ultimate question:

How many “I used to be pretty good, but now my game is somewhere below that” players can you add to an Edmonton Oilers roster that already has already houses Corey Perry, Jeff Skinner, Adam Henrique, Viktor Arvidsson, Kasperi Kapanen, and perhaps even 32-year-old Mattias Janmark?

“If I were the Oilers I’d be concerned that they have a lot of guys in the same boat as (Saad). Shadows of once good players,” a scout texted on Wednesday night.

So we went to the rink on Thursday morning and found Adam Henrique, not so much a “shadow of a once good player” but a centreman who has accepted a lesser role in Edmonton than what he was used to in Anaheim.

All in exchange for the chance to win a Stanley Cup.

“It’s a fine line,” said Henrique. “There’s only so much (ice time) to go around, and everybody’s got to buy in, in order to be a top team.”

On a 20-man roster, what’s the right number?

“I think as many as are willing to buy in and accept a bit of a lesser role than in the past,” said Henrique, a nearly 1,000-game player who has never won a Stanley Cup while playing in New Jersey and Anaheim.

Saad, meanwhile, won Cups as a Blackhawk in 2013 and 2015 playing (mostly) on a line with Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa. Now he’s mired in a St. Louis rebuild that he forgave $5.1 million in salary to get away from.

Henrique, as with most any current NHL player, has mad respect for that player and what he could bring to a team.

“Not a ton of guys have experience like that, and have been through those sorts of things or been with players at that level,” Henrique acknowledges. “On all those good teams, all those guys have a willingness to buy into a role — otherwise you wouldn’t be there. You’d want to go to a team that’s not as good, where there’s more ice time to be available.”

OK, so the experience, the knowledge — all those intangibles — are highly valued in hockey. But the player has to be able to play.

In Saad’s case — a 32-year-old, middle-six left-winger who would spend some of his time next to Leon Draisaitl — he has to have certain qualities.

Sure, Saad — who scored 26 goals last season — has better hands than Vasily Podkolzin. But can he dig pucks out for Draisaitl the way Podkolzin does, play defence like Podkolzin does, and skate at anywhere close to the pace that Podkolzin does?

“He is better than most of the Oilers’ bottom-six currently,” said a Central Division scout.

“I don’t mind him. Skating and shot not what they used to be. Down low game can be good, but it’s inconsistent. He’ll be motivated and likely better than he was in St. Louis.” — Central Division scout.

“Plays in straight lines. Big, strong power forward-type who plays well in the playoffs. Lost a step but still a functional middle-six guy. Plays best in big games.” — Atlantic Division scout.

“Nada. Nothing (left).” — Metropolitan Scout.

“Last one on the ice and first one off. Maybe a change of scenery helps.” — Former player.

“Hard player to defend/contain when he has his motor going. Similar to Klingberg, why not take a chance? A free acquisition — if it doesn’t work out, no big deal.” — Central scout.

So it’s a bit of a flyer, like the last scout said, but so what?

The Oilers, already the oldest team in the National Hockey League, are currently taking a similar flyer on defenceman John Klingberg, who is scheduled to make his debut Thursday versus Detroit. Klingberg says he’s never played pain-free in the NHL after double hip surgeries at ages 18 and 21.

But after a third surgery he claims to be pain-free today. If it turns out he is a better defenceman than Troy Stecher, Ty Emberson or both, the Oilers will have improved themselves without spending an asset — other than a bit of cap space and the owner’s money.

If Saad can take some time away from Podkolzin next to Draisaitl, or be more productive on the third line next to Henrique than Skinner, Kapanen or Janmark, then the same is true in this case.

But he’s got to be able to play before any of the leadership and experience qualities mean a thing.

“What we want is best players possible, no matter what their age,” said head coach Kris Knoblauch, who was not referencing Saad in particular. “Bringing in talent is the most important thing, and then having roles.

“If you get a bunch of offensive players, they might be the best players but they can’t utilize their skill if they’re not on the first-unit power play. And we’ve got a pretty good first-unit power play,” he said. “Now, for veterans, it comes down to what they’re bringing and how good they are. If they do have some experience, It’s going to help with when the team goes through tough times.

“But just because they’ve got experience, that doesn’t mean they’re going to be a better player than the guys you already have.”

So far, the only veteran acquisitions that have been regrettable is Skinner. That was a Jeff Jackson call, and the Oilers will simply have to eat that $3 million deal if Saad came in and pushed Skinner further down the roster at left wing.

Then there’s the imminent return of left winger Evander Kane…

The Edmonton Oilers have been searching for a reliable and consistent winger to complement their star center, Connor McDavid. With rumors swirling around Brandon Saad potentially being available for trade, should the Oilers take a chance on him?

Saad, a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Chicago Blackhawks, has proven to be a valuable asset on the wing. He possesses a rare combination of skill, speed, and physicality that could make him a perfect fit alongside McDavid. Additionally, Saad has a proven track record of scoring goals and producing points consistently throughout his career.

While there may be some concerns about Saad’s contract and potential cap implications for the Oilers, the potential upside of adding a player of his caliber could outweigh any financial risks. With the Oilers looking to make a deep playoff run and capitalize on McDavid’s prime years, adding a player like Saad could be the missing piece to their championship puzzle.

Ultimately, the decision to pursue Saad will come down to the Oilers’ management and their assessment of the team’s needs and goals. But if the opportunity presents itself, taking a chance on Brandon Saad could be a bold move that pays off big for the Edmonton Oilers.

  • St. Louis Blues place forward Brandon Saad on waivers

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Blues placed veteran forward Brandon Saad on waivers Tuesday with the intent of sending him to the minors.

He cleared Wednesday and will be assigned to Springfield of the American Hockey League. General manager Doug Armstrong said that was the plan if he wasn’t claimed. Saad has another year left on his contract at a salary cap hit of $4.5 million, which made it unlikely he was going anywhere but the AHL.

“That will open up some space for different players that I’d like to see get in the lineup and see where it goes,” Armstrong said, referring specifically to younger Alexandre Texier.

Saad, 32, has been held without a goal in 40 of his 43 games this season. He has a total of 16 points on seven goals and nine assists and was not garnering much, if any, trade interest around the league.

“Obviously, the production’s not there,” Armstrong said. “Right now the cap is tight, and obviously statistically he’s not having a great year and he’s got another year left. If we could find a match, we would try.”

The Blues are languishing on the edge of the Western Conference playoff race past the midway point of the season, five points back of the second and final wild-card spot. Armstrong made his first big move in November by firing Drew Bannister 22 games into being the full-time coach and hiring Jim Montgomery as his replacement.

St. Louis has gone 14-12-3 with Montgomery behind the bench. The organization is trying to build for the future but also attempt to win now, and there are plenty of questions about why that is not happening.

“I don’t know why our home record is under .500,” Armstrong said. “I don’t know whey we didn’t embrace the opportunity of a three-game homestand to make hay. But my job is to not react to it but to observe it and then say, ‘OK, well what do we need to do moving forward?’ Part of the retool is we’re finding out positives and negatives about a lot of different situations in our group.”

Saad is in his fourth season with the Blues. During the prime of his career, he helped Chicago win the Stanley Cup twice: in 2013 and 2015.

Putting him on waivers comes a day after trading defenseman Scott Perunovich to the New York Islanders for a conditional 2026 fifth-round pick.

“I talked to the coach over the last little while and he didn’t see a future to get him in the lineup here,” Armstrong said. “So, when an opportunity came to give him a chance to play and the Islanders were interested, it seemed like something that made sense for us to help him along, and wish him nothing but the best.”

Texier, 25, has three goals and eight points this season across just 24 games. Last season, appearing in 78 contests for the Columbus Blue Jackets, he had a career-high 12 goals and 30 points.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The St. Louis Blues have placed forward Brandon Saad on waivers. The decision comes after Saad has struggled to find his offensive game this season, tallying just 4 goals and 6 assists in 33 games.

Saad, who was acquired by the Blues in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche in the offseason, has not lived up to expectations in St. Louis. The team is hoping that placing him on waivers will give Saad a chance to clear his mind and potentially find his scoring touch in the AHL.

It’s a tough move for the Blues to make, but they are hoping that it will ultimately benefit both Saad and the team in the long run. Stay tuned to see if any other teams claim the talented forward off waivers.
