  • Nick Saban shares his side of fateful 2006 phone call about Drew Brees

When many NFL fans around the world think of the New Orleans Saints, one of if not the first player they think of is Drew Brees. A franchise icon, one of the best quarterbacks to ever step on a football field, the man who brought a Super Bowl to New Orleans, and a sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Fame inductee. However, there was the potential for Brees to have never signed with the Saints, and instead gone to the Miami Dolphins where longtime Alabama head coach Nick Saban was running the show.

Nick Saban recently went on ‘The Pivot’ podcast featuring Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor, and Channing Crowder to discuss a wide array of topics. One of the topics that came up was Drew Brees, his failed physical with the Dolphins, as well as the phone call Saban had with Brees’ agent regarding how long he needed the physical to not be made public, allowing the deal to go through for the Saints. He made it clear that the physical was the reason he turned away, and also that he did end up regretting it no doubt.

“Now the other part about that is, I actually had to call his agent and say we had a deal, but he didn’t pass the physical,” Saban recalled. “And he said ‘oh man Nick, you can’t tell people he didn’t pass the physical, I’ll never get him signed anyplace.’ And I said nobody will know, how much time do you need, he said like 72 hours, so I never told anybody. Nobody knew for 72 hours, until he signed in New Orleans.”

The intriguing part about this is the response to this post, in which former Saints head coach Sean Payton responded with an ominous post saying, “A little bit missing in this piece…” As of the writing of this article there has been no further context added, however, some have speculated it could be in regards to the phone call Saban had with Brees after the fact regarding the physical.

In Brees’ book titled “Coming Back Stronger” there is an excerpt on pages 106 to 108 (found thanks to a response post) which talks about the phone call he had with Saban after the failed physical. This phone call essentially boiled down to Brees calling in, and trying to get closure on whether or not Saban truly wanted him, physical or not. Saban would make it clear that the physical was the physical, and that is what he had to believe, while Brees thought his response sounded “scripted” to an extent. Brees had already received positive affirmations from the Saints in their beliefs about his abilities and his recovery, which ultimately led to him signing there rather than the Dolphins.

The whole situation is obviously somewhat of a touchy one even nearly 20 years later, as Saban would end up going back to Alabama in 2007 and Sean Payton remains in the NFL to date (though obviously both have had enormously successful careers in their own right). Brees ultimately became a franchise defining player who the Saints still are having trouble living without, and the Dolphins traded a second round pick for Dante Culpepper who was cut the next offseason.

In a recent interview, Alabama head coach Nick Saban opened up about the fateful 2006 phone call that ultimately led to Drew Brees signing with the New Orleans Saints instead of the Miami Dolphins.

Saban revealed that he had been in talks with Brees and his agent about potentially signing with the Dolphins, who were in desperate need of a quarterback at the time. However, Saban admitted that he had concerns about Brees’ health following a serious shoulder injury.

During the phone call, Saban expressed his reservations to Brees and his agent, advising them to consider all options before making a decision. In the end, Brees chose to sign with the Saints, a decision that would ultimately lead to a Super Bowl victory and a Hall of Fame career.

Saban reflected on the phone call, acknowledging that it was a difficult decision for Brees to make but ultimately the right one for his career. He expressed admiration for Brees’ resilience and determination to overcome adversity, and wished him continued success in his future endeavors.

Overall, Saban’s perspective on the fateful phone call sheds new light on the important role he played in shaping Brees’ career and the impact it had on both the Dolphins and the Saints.

  • Julian Sayin talks reasons for leaving Alabama football after Nick Saban retired

For a few practices in California, Julian Sayin was an Alabama football player. The former five-star quarterback, who committed to the Crimson Tide in the 2024 recruiting class, enrolled early and joined the team for practice ahead of its appearance in the College Football Playoff’s Rose Bowl semifinal against Michigan.

He quickly earned rave reviews from Alabama’s coaching staff.

“Julian is an outstanding player,” Nick Saban said. “The ball comes out of his hand real nice. He’s accurate. He’s smart. He’s had a great high school career and been one of the best players, most productive players in the country on a very consistent basis and we like him a lot.”

A few weeks later, everything changed. Saban walked into a meeting and told the Tide he was retiring as football coach.

Sayin, one of the most coveted quarterback prospects in the country, was shocked.

“It was definitely a little surprising,” Sayin told AL.com Saturday in Atlanta, as his current Ohio State team prepares to play in the national championship on Monday.

After Saban retired, UA athletics director Greg Bryne tapped Kalen DeBoer as his replacement. Shortly thereafter, Sayin entered the transfer portal.

He explained that decision on Saturday.

“I just didn’t really have a relationship with them,” Sayin said. “Just felt like I should enter the portal and ended up at a great spot here.”

He landed at Ohio State, a choice based mostly on head coach Ryan Day.

“Coach (Chip) Kelly wasn’t actually here when I committed, but coach Day and the way he’s always been able to develop quarterbacks,” Sayin said of that decision process. “Just wanted to be part of that.”

Sayin has spent his freshman year backing up Will Howard in Columbus. He saw action in four games throughout the 2024 season, including a brief appearance in OSU’s playoff win over Tennessee.

The Carlsbad, Calif. native enters the championship game with five completions on 12 attempts, for 84 yards and a touchdown. When asked about the youngster’s potential ceiling, Buckeye offensive coordinator Kelly took a similar tone to Saban.

“As high as he wants it to be,” Kelly told reporters in Atlanta. “I think he’s a tremendously talented player. He’s got a great work ethic. We’re excited about him. He came in early so he got spring ball with us. Did a good job in preseason camp.”

Sayin will have a chance to win the starting job for Ohio State next season. Kelly said he expects the QB group in spring football to include Sayin, Lincoln Kienholtz and incoming freshman Tavien St. Clair.

In the meantime, Sayin said he felt improved as a player since arriving in Columbus.

“A lot of just learning about the game,” Sayin said. “Learning more about how to be a quarterback in college football.”

Ohio State and Notre Dame are scheduled to play in the national championship game at 6:30 CT Monday in Atlanta. The game will be aired on ESPN.

As Julian Sayin, a former player for the Alabama football team, recently announced his decision to leave the program following head coach Nick Saban’s retirement, fans and analysts alike have been speculating on the reasons behind his departure.

In a candid interview, Sayin revealed that while he has the utmost respect for Saban and all that he has accomplished at Alabama, he felt that it was time for a change in his football career. Sayin mentioned that he had been contemplating this decision for quite some time, and Saban’s retirement simply served as a catalyst for him to finally make the leap.

Sayin also mentioned that he wants to explore different opportunities and experiences outside of the Alabama football program. While he will always cherish the memories and lessons learned during his time at Alabama, Sayin believes that it is important for him to continue growing and evolving as a player and a person.

Fans of the Alabama football team have expressed mixed reactions to Sayin’s decision, with some understanding and respecting his choice, while others are disappointed to see him leave the program. Regardless, Sayin remains grateful for his time at Alabama and is excited for the next chapter in his football career.

As Sayin embarks on this new journey, it will be interesting to see where his talents and abilities take him next. Whether he joins another college football program, pursues a career in the NFL, or explores other opportunities in the world of sports, there is no doubt that Julian Sayin will continue to make a name for himself in the world of football.

Nick Saban sits on the ESPN College Gameday set prior to the NCAA football game between the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Ohio State Buckeyes at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pa. on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024.

Nick Saban sits on the ESPN College Gameday set prior to the NCAA football game between the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Ohio State Buckeyes at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pa. on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024.

This story has been updated to add new information related to the postponement of the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

Former Alabama Crimson Tide football coach Nick Saban revealed his picks and predictions for the three College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchups on New Year’s Day 2025.

From his perch on ESPN’s “College GameDay” set inside an empty Rose Bowl Stadium Wednesday, Saban made predictions on Ohio State vs. Oregon in Pasadena, as well as Texas vs. Arizona State in the Peach Bowl, and Notre Dame vs. Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

For the Peach Bowl matchup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Saban took his former assistant Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns (12-2) to beat the Big 12 champion Sun Devils (11-2).

    Saban said:

Nick Saban predicts Oregon vs Ohio State Rose Bowl winner

The most-hyped matchup of the quarterfinals is in the Rose Bowl where Oregon (13-0) remains the last unbeaten team in college football. The Ducks will meet Ohio State (11-2) in a rematch following a thrilling 32-31 Oregon win back on Oct. 12 in Eugene.

This time around, Saban took the Buckeyes to win.

“I don’t think we should be picking this game until the next round, just so everybody knows. It is what it is, even though it’s two Big Ten teams. To me, they’re the two best teams in the country. But anyway, I think it’s going to be tough for Oregon to bounce back a second time and beat this team again, so I will take Ohio State.”

Kickoff for the Rose Bowl is set for 4 p.m. CT. All College Football Playoff games today will be televised on ESPN.

This article originally appeared on Roll Tide Wire: Nick Saban predicts winners and losers for College Football Playoff quarterfinal games

Nick Saban, the legendary head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, has made some bold predictions for the upcoming College Football Playoff quarterfinal games. In a recent press conference, Saban confidently stated his picks for the winners and losers of the highly anticipated matchups.

According to Saban, he believes that Alabama will come out on top against Michigan in a dominating fashion. With his team’s stellar performance throughout the season, Saban is confident that the Crimson Tide will secure a spot in the semifinals.

Saban also predicted that Georgia will defeat Baylor in their quarterfinal game, showcasing their strong defense and explosive offense. The Bulldogs have been a force to be reckoned with this season, and Saban believes they will continue their winning streak in the playoffs.

On the flip side, Saban foresees Clemson falling to Ohio State in a closely contested game. Despite Clemson’s impressive track record, Saban believes that Ohio State’s strong defense and dynamic offense will be too much for the Tigers to handle.

Lastly, Saban predicted that LSU will emerge victorious over Oklahoma in their quarterfinal matchup. With Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow leading the way, Saban believes that LSU’s high-powered offense will outshine Oklahoma’s defense.

While these are just predictions, Saban’s track record as a coach speaks for itself. It will be interesting to see if his picks come to fruition as the College Football Playoff quarterfinal games unfold.

  • Penn State’s James Franklin says Nick Saban should be commish

Penn State’s James Franklin says Nick Saban should be commish

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Penn State coach James Franklin on Sunday added his name to the growing list of college football voices who believe the sport needs a commissioner and thinks there’s one man right for the job.

Speaking at media availability for the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, Franklin said former Alabama coach Nick Saban is the “obvious choice” to navigate college football through a period of sweeping change.

“I think one of the most important things we can do is, let’s get a commissioner of college football that is waking up every single morning and going to bed every single night making decisions that’s in the best interest of college football,” Franklin said. “I think Nick Saban would be the obvious choice if we made that decision. Now, Nick will probably call me tonight and say, ‘Don’t do this,’ but I think he’s the obvious choice, right?”

Franklin is not alone in nominating Saban for the hypothetical job. Last week, Ole Miss coach and former Saban assistant Lane Kiffin posted on X that he would vote for Saban in that role.

On Sunday, Franklin added that hiring a commissioner would be an important first step to “move forward and come up with some solutions” to the transfer portal and NIL, but he also didn’t hold back on offering some of his own.

Franklin was asked about what could be done to incentivize players to stay on rosters and continue to compete through the end of the season, and he said it’s time for leaders throughout the sport to stop talking about the issues and start solving them.

He proposed eliminating conference championship games so the season is shorter and the College Football Playoff selection committee can have a more fair comparison.

“When you have a committee sitting in a room trying to compare apples to apples, or oranges to oranges, it’s hard to do that when not everybody’s playing under the same model,” he said. “Get rid of the conference championship game. That will shorten the season and help with the window a little bit.”

He also suggested every conference play the same number of league games — eight or nine — and start the season a week earlier to “take some stress off of the academic calendar.”

“God forbid we talk about academics, right?” he said. “That used to be every conversation started with academics and that’s becoming less and less. Maybe I’m old school and maybe I’m a traditionalist, but I still believe in the model. Rather than just say this is a problem, I thought I would throw out a few recommendations, but I think one of the most important things we can do is let’s get a commissioner of college football.”

Franklin said the current leadership in college athletics, which is driven by one commissioner for each conference, isn’t working.

“Whenever you have people that are making decisions and running college football, they’re going to be biased towards what’s best to their conference, and that’s not in the best interest of college football and the student athletes,” he said. “… If every decision we make is based on money, then we’re heading in the wrong direction.”

Franklin’s Nittany Lions will take on Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl on Tuesday night (7:30 ET, ESPN) in the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff.

Penn State’s head coach James Franklin recently made headlines with his suggestion that Alabama’s Nick Saban should be the next commissioner of college football. Franklin praised Saban’s leadership abilities and success on the field, stating that he believes Saban would bring a unique perspective and strong leadership to the role of commissioner.

Many in the college football world have responded positively to Franklin’s suggestion, citing Saban’s track record of success and his reputation as one of the most respected coaches in the game. Saban has won numerous national championships during his tenure at Alabama and has a reputation for running a disciplined and successful program.

While Saban has not publicly commented on the idea of becoming commissioner, his name continues to be floated as a potential candidate for the role. As college football continues to evolve and face new challenges, many believe that Saban’s leadership and experience could be a valuable asset in guiding the future of the sport.

Only time will tell if Saban will make the transition from coaching to a leadership role in college football, but one thing is for certain – his name is already being considered as a potential candidate for the job.

  • ESPN analysts explain why Nick Saban could never serve as college football commissioner

ESPN analysts explain why Nick Saban could never serve as college football commissioner

Former Alabama coach Nick Saban has been mentioned as a potential college football commissioner by Penn State’s James Franklin, Georgia’s Kirby Smart and plenty of others in recent days.

However, ESPN First Take analysts Domonique Foxworth and Shannon Sharpe believe putting Saban in that position is a bad idea. The two have different reasons as to why they don’t believe it would work. Foxworth shared his opinion first.

“Hell no. … It’s a terrible idea,” Foxworth said. “Put aside the idea of having a commissioner, having someone who is obviously associated with a specific team and organization and a conference, making all the decisions for college football, assuming that any one person is capable of putting the best interest of college football ahead of their own personal bias – it certainly shouldn’t be Nick Saban, because he does not even have the perception of unbiasedness.”

Foxworth went on to say that he doesn’t believe anyone should be the commissioner of college football. But if there does end up being one, he definitely feels like it shouldn’t be Saban.

Foxworth doesn’t feel like Nick Saban is capable of being unbiased.

“You at least have to be perceived as such, perceived as capable of doing it,” Foxworth said. “No one would accept it – because you know who would be No. 1 every year no matter what? Alabama. It makes no sense to have Nick Saban as the commissioner of college football. And I don’t even think you should have a commissioner at all.”

As for Shannon Sharpe, he shared a different reason for why Nick Saban as the college football commissioner doesn’t make sense.

According to Sharpe, it’s because Saban gains nothing by adding the pressure and stress of taking over that role.

“I believe coach Saban loves what he’s doing currently with College GameDay.’ Sharpe said. “It’s a lot less stressful. You make good money. You get to travel, you get out to meet people. And people pat you on the back and tell you everywhere you go that you’re the greatest college coach ever. Coach Saban doesn’t want these problems anymore. Coach Saban doesn’t want these headaches.”

Unlike Foxworth, Sharpe does believe that there should be a commissioner for college football. He just doesn’t believe the role is right for Saban.

“I do like the theory of having a commissioner,” Sharpe said I” do think we need a commissioner to get a handle on this and say, ‘OK, this is how we’re going to do it moving forward.’ But I think coach Saban, he doesn’t want that.”

Nick Saban is undeniably one of the greatest college football coaches of all time, with an impressive record of national championships and conference titles under his belt. However, many ESPN analysts believe that Saban’s coaching style and approach to the game would make him ill-suited for the role of college football commissioner.

One of the main reasons cited by analysts is Saban’s intense focus on winning and his sometimes controversial tactics to achieve success. Saban is known for his demanding coaching style and his willingness to push the boundaries of NCAA rules in order to gain a competitive advantage. As commissioner, Saban would need to prioritize the overall health and integrity of the sport, which may require a more diplomatic and consensus-building approach.

Additionally, Saban’s background as a coach may limit his ability to see the bigger picture and make decisions that benefit the entire college football landscape. As a coach, Saban is primarily focused on his own team’s success, whereas a commissioner must consider the needs and interests of all teams, conferences, and stakeholders.

Overall, while Saban’s coaching prowess is undeniable, his style and approach to the game may not align with the qualities needed to serve as college football commissioner. ESPN analysts believe that Saban’s intense focus on winning and his coaching background may hinder his ability to effectively lead and govern the sport at a broader level.

  • Penn State’s James Franklin says Nick Saban should be college football’s commissioner

Penn State’s James Franklin says Nick Saban should be college football’s commissioner

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Penn State coach James Franklin believes college football needs a commissioner and he even has a candidate in mind: former Alabama coach Nick Saban.

“I think he’s the obvious choice, right?” Franklin said.

Franklin — who joked that Saban wouldn’t be thrilled with his comment — made the suggestion on Sunday at Penn State’s College Football Playoff quarterfinals media day ahead of the Fiesta Bowl. The sixth-seeded Nittany Lions are preparing for their game against No. 3 seed Boise State on Tuesday.

The veteran coach was responding to a question about Penn State’s backup quarterback situation after Beau Pribula transferred to Missouri just weeks before the CFP began, leaving the Nittany Lions scrambling for options. Pribula’s decision highlighted some of the frustrating aspects of a new college football world in the Name, Image and Likeness era and the transfer portal, forcing players to make tough decisions at inopportune times.

Franklin said that because there isn’t a leader dedicated solely to college football, conference commissioners are left to handle the task themselves. That’s led to bickering between the leagues because different conferences have different interests.

“I think one of the most important things that we can do is let’s get a commissioner of college football that is waking up every single morning and going to bed every single night, making decisions that’s in the best interest of college football,” Franklin said.

The 73-year-old Saban retired after last season as arguably the most successful college football coach of all time. He won seven national titles, including six at Alabama and one at LSU. He is now an analyst for ESPN’s “College GameDay.”

Penn State head football coach James Franklin made headlines recently with his suggestion that legendary Alabama coach Nick Saban should be named college football’s commissioner. Franklin praised Saban for his leadership and success in building a powerhouse program at Alabama, and believes he would bring valuable experience and expertise to the role of commissioner.

In a recent interview, Franklin stated, “Nick Saban is the gold standard in college football. His track record of success, his ability to adapt to the changing landscape of the sport, and his commitment to the development of student-athletes make him the perfect candidate to lead college football as its commissioner.”

Many in the college football community have echoed Franklin’s sentiments, pointing to Saban’s proven track record of success and his reputation as a respected and influential figure in the sport. Saban has won multiple national championships at Alabama and is widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in college football history.

While Saban has not publicly commented on the idea of becoming college football’s commissioner, the suggestion has sparked a lively debate among fans and analysts. Some believe that Saban’s leadership and vision could help address some of the challenges facing college football, while others question whether a coach should hold such a prominent administrative role.

Regardless of the outcome, Franklin’s suggestion has certainly generated buzz and added an interesting twist to the ongoing conversation about the future of college football. Only time will tell if Saban will take on a new role as commissioner, but one thing is certain: his impact on the sport will continue to be felt for years to come.

  • Casagrande: Nick Saban as college football commissioner? Let’s get real

Casagrande: Nick Saban as college football commissioner? Let’s get real

    This is an opinion column.

The headlines are hard to miss if you’re into college football and have an internet connection.

Lane Kiffin wants Nick Saban to be the commissioner of college football.

James Franklin also wants Nick Saban to be the commissioner of college football.

    Kirby Smart too.

Everyone wants Nick Saban to be the commissioner of college football.

Sounds cool, but three questions, if I might.

    1. What is a commissioner of college football? Like in reality? We’re discussing this job, like it ACTUALLY exists. (It doesn’t)
    2. Does anyone think any single person could be given absolute power, wave a wand and fix the compounding issues facing the sport today?
    3. What makes you think the 73-year-old would want this monumental (though imaginary) task?

Not trying to end the year on a cynical note, but like, what are we talking about here?

Are coaches this desperate that they’re creating a mystical superhero from their former ultimate villain?

Nick Saban is going to swoop down from the College Football GameDay set and fix the problems that greatly contributed to his retirement from coaching?

What are we talking about here?

That’s not to say the problems facing the sport are some fantastical Marvel storyline. They’re real and not going away.

The concern is valid because the intersection of NIL, revenue sharing, and recruiting is only getting more complicated and with real-world consequences. The NCAA is losing power every passing day after court rulings stripped much of its power in this realm.

The idea of Nick Saban serving as the college football commissioner may seem far-fetched, but let’s consider the possibilities. Saban, known for his strategic coaching and leadership skills, has been a dominant force in the college football world for years. With his track record of success at the University of Alabama, could he bring that same level of excellence to the role of commissioner?

As the head of college football, Saban could potentially bring a new level of organization and structure to the sport. His experience and knowledge of the game could help navigate the complex issues facing college football today, such as conference realignment, playoff expansion, and player compensation.

Furthermore, Saban’s reputation for holding players and coaches accountable could bring a sense of integrity and fairness to the sport. His no-nonsense approach to discipline could help ensure that rules and regulations are upheld, and that the game is played with respect and sportsmanship.

While this may all be speculation, the idea of Nick Saban as college football commissioner is certainly intriguing. Whether or not it ever becomes a reality, one thing is for certain – Saban’s impact on the sport of college football is undeniable.

  • Nick Saban reveals what impressed him most about Texas’ victory over Clemson, why it could lead to national championship

Nick Saban reveals what impressed him most about Texas’ victory over Clemson, why it could lead to national championship

Nick Saban was impressed with the way Steve Sarkisian’s Texas Longhorns played during the First Round of the College Football Playoff against the Clemson Tigers. And it’s easy to see why.

Texas was able to secure a 14-point win over Dabo Swinney’s bunch this past weekend, fighting back in a big way after falling down by a touchdown early in the contest. During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Friday, Saban explained why the performance could signal immense success and a championship run for the Longhorns.

Get your team’s official College Football Playoff watch from AXIA by CLICKING HERE: “Watches that tell so much more than time”

“The thing that impressed me most about Texas in the Clemson game is the way they ran the ball,” Saban said, regarding the Longhorns’ performance. “I mean, they ran the ball, I mean, up and down the field on these guys. I think that, I’ve always said this — if you don’t run the ball, well, you have trouble in the red area. They didn’t have the same issues in the red area, I think, because of their ability to run the ball.

“Now, I don’t know probably enough about Clemson’s defense, but I think they’re pretty decent — but they did a good job. They made some explosive plays. They’ve got explosive players. So, I think Texas is one of the best four teams out there that has a chance to, you know, get in the championship game.”

Continuing, Pat McAfee believes in Texas even more after their win over the Tigers, believing it’s a continuation of what they’ve shown all season long, with their incredible ability to rally after disappointment.

“I love that Sark has had to get his boys to rally a couple of different times now,” McAfee added. “Lose early at home in front of the whole world. Have to rally. Now, ‘Is this team for real or not?’ Had an injury. Obviously, had to rally. Then, they lose the SEC Championship. Had to rally.

“It’s like, I feel like they’re callous too, you know. I feel like they’ve been through some shit this year, mentally and physically, and that could be a great motivator for a team.”

Moving forward, it’ll be fascinating to see if Nick Saban and Pat McAfee are right about the Texas Longhorns. Their next contest will take place on New Year’s Day, as they’ll do battle with the Arizona State Sun Devils in the Quarterfinal of the College Football Playoff.

Nick Saban, the legendary head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, recently shared his thoughts on Texas’ impressive victory over Clemson in the College Football Playoff semifinals. In an interview with ESPN, Saban revealed that what impressed him most about Texas’ performance was their relentless defense and ability to capitalize on turnovers.

Saban praised Texas’ defense for their aggressive play and ability to shut down Clemson’s high-powered offense. He noted that their ability to force turnovers and turn them into points was a key factor in their victory. Saban also highlighted the leadership and poise of Texas’ quarterback, who made crucial plays when it mattered most.

Saban believes that Texas’ convincing win over Clemson has put them in a prime position to win the national championship. He emphasized the importance of momentum and confidence in college football, and he believes that Texas has both on their side heading into the title game.

Overall, Saban was thoroughly impressed by Texas’ performance and sees them as a serious contender for the national championship. With their strong defense, efficient offense, and winning mindset, Saban believes that Texas has what it takes to bring home the trophy. Stay tuned for what promises to be an exciting national championship game.

Longhorns Daily News: It means something when Nick Saban is impressed with Texas football’s rushing game

Former Alabama head coach (and retired college football Death Star) Nick Saban recently sat down with the Pat McAfee Show to share his thoughts on some of the contending College Football Playoff teams ahead of the quarterfinals round. Texas will play Arizona State after pushing Clemson over the edge last week in the inaugural CFP opening round.

Nick Saban admitted he’s impressed with Texas’ offensive rushing game this postseason.

“The thing that impressed me most about Texas in the Clemson game is the way they ran the ball,” Saban said, according to Inside Texas. “I mean, they ran the ball, I mean, up and down the field on these guys. I think that, I’ve always said this — if you don’t run the ball, well, you have trouble in the red area. They didn’t have the same issues in the red area, I think, because of their ability to run the ball.
