  • College Basketball: Saint Mary’s at Santa Clara Prediction, Betting Odds & How to Watch

The Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team proved last week that it has one of the most dominant frontcourts in the country.

The Gaels scored 94 points in the paint in wins over San Francisco and Washington State last week. Six-foot-8 power forward Paulius Murauskas and 6-foot-10 center Mitchell Saxen combined to rack up 75 points and 28 rebounds in the two games, and both finished the week with 24 points in the paint.

St. Mary’s (18-3, 8-0 WCC) is also dominant on the boards. The Gaels average 40.7 rebounds a night, which ranks No. 1 in the West Coast Conference and No. 17 in the country. They also average four blocked shots a game, which ranks No. 2 in the WCC.

That kind of dominance in the paint is a big part of why the Gaels have a commanding lead in the WCC. They’re just ahead of Gonzaga (16-6, 7-2) and San Francisco (17-6, 7-3).

St. Mary’s will defend its lead in the race for the regular-season conference championship and try to extend its winning streak to nine games at Santa Clara (14-8, 6-3 WCC) on Wednesday. The Gaels won the WCC title last season, snapping Gonzaga’s streak of seven straight titles.

Santa Clara, which is a little more than two weeks removed from its 103-99 upset of Gonzaga, is coming off an 83-69 loss at Oregon State on Saturday.

The Broncos are led by 6-foot-7 guard Adama-Alpha Bal, who is averaging 14 points a night. Seven-foot center Christoph Tilly is adding 13 points and 4.8 rebounds a night.

Saint Mary’s at Santa Clara Betting Odds

Saint Mary’s is a 4.5-point college basketball betting odds favorite on BetMGM against Santa Clara, and the Over/Under is 139.5 points.

The Moneyline is -190 for St. Mary’s and +154 for Santa Clara.

Saint Mary’s at Santa Clara on TV

The West Coast Conference game featuring St. Mary’s and Santa Clara will be televised on ESPNU.

    Tip-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET.

Saint Mary’s at Santa Clara Prediction

    I predict St. Mary’s wins, 72-69.

The Gaels don’t just have the best group of big men in the WCC. They have what may be the deepest roster in the conference.

St. Mary’s has six players averaging at least nine points a game, including sophomore Jordan Ross, who has scored in double figures in four straight games for the first time in his career. The Gaels also have three players averaging at least 10 points and seven rebounds a game: Murauskas, Saxen, and 6-foot-6 redshirt senior Luke Barrett.

St. Mary’s is also home to the reigning WCC Player of the Year, point guard Augustas Marciulionis, who leads the team with 13.9 points a game and ranks No. 4 in the conference with 120 assists.

Santa Clara can score with anyone in the WCC. The Broncos rank No. 2 in the conference with 80.7 points a game. They have two players that have scored 1,000 career points: Johnny O’Neil and Carlos Stewart Jr. All five of their starters average more than 10 points a night, and the Broncos are averaging 27.3 points from the bench per game.

Santa Clara hasn’t faced a defense like St. Mary’s, though. The Gaels are giving up 61.3 points a game, which ranks No. 1 in the WCC and No. 7 in the country.

  • Gonzaga Bulldogs vs Saint Mary’s Gaels Prediction, Odds and Picks

In the biggest game the West Coast Conference will see all year, the Gonzaga Bulldogs will visit Moraga to face the Saint Mary’s Gaels. This matchup has become one of the best rivalries in all of college basketball (my personal favorite rivalry), and these teams have been evenly matched as of late. In the last 2 seasons, the Gaels and Bulldogs have split the season series (both 3-3), and this year looks to be no different. Gonzaga was able to leave Moraga with a win a year ago, and they could very well do that again this season.

This matchup always provides a clash of styles, as Gonzaga loves to push in transition to create easy baskets, but Saint Mary’s is always looking to keep games in the halfcourt to assert their physical brand of basketball. Saint Mary’s is typically able to slow the pace down in this matchup, as all 3 meetings a year ago were played at 63 possessions or less. While this could be viewed as favorable to the Gaels, the Bulldogs are not just a transition reliant offense and can score in the halfcourt at an efficient rate. The Bulldogs rank in the just the 11th percentile in offensive possession rate in the halfcourt, but they are in the 99th percentile on a points per possession basis, per Synergy. The Bulldogs’ offensive success in the halfcourt comes from their elite post-up game, led by Graham Ike (17.3 ppg), and he can have success in this game against the 1-on-1 post up coverage of Saint Mary’s, who hasn’t necessarily been tested in that area this season.

The offense has never been the issue for the Mark Few led Bulldogs, but the defense has been a different story this year. Gonzaga is just 54th in adjusted defensive efficiency, per KenPom, and their inside the arc defense has been especially poor (177th in 2-point FG% defense). However, coach Few has addressed the defensive woes by switching up the rotations over the last 2 games. The addition of Tarleton State transfer Emmanuel Innocenti into the starting lineup has done wonders for Gonzaga’s point of attack defense, and in turn has taken the pressure off the lack of true rim protection the Bulldogs have. For a reference point, Gonzaga was able to hold Oregon State to a 15-34 shooting clip inside the arc (47%) in their last contest after allowing a 25-39 shooting clip (64%) against the same Beavers team in a road loss. Innocenti has made a real difference since being inserted into the starting lineup, and he will be important in this game when it comes to containing the reigning WCC player of the year in Augustas Marciulionis. Gonzaga’s 2-way rebounding ability will also be key against a Gaels team that creates much of their value in this area.

In what should be an exciting matchup, I am looking to back the Bulldogs as a small road underdog. The talent level of Gonzaga’s perimeter, their rebounding ability, and their improved defense leads me to believe this is a great set up for the Bulldogs.

The highly anticipated matchup between the Gonzaga Bulldogs and the Saint Mary’s Gaels is set to take place this week, and fans are eager to see which team will come out on top. Both teams have had strong seasons so far, with Gonzaga ranked as one of the top teams in the nation and Saint Mary’s proving to be a tough competitor.

In terms of predictions, Gonzaga is favored to win this game. The Bulldogs have a strong offense led by star player Drew Timme, who is averaging over 21 points per game. They also have a solid defense that has been able to shut down opponents throughout the season.

On the other hand, Saint Mary’s has been playing well and has some key players who can make an impact on the game. However, they will need to bring their A-game in order to compete with the powerhouse that is Gonzaga.

In terms of odds, Gonzaga is currently listed as the favorite to win this game. The Bulldogs have an impressive record and have shown that they can dominate on both ends of the court. Saint Mary’s, on the other hand, will need to put up a strong fight if they want to pull off an upset.

As for picks, it’s hard to go against Gonzaga in this matchup. They have the talent and experience to come out on top, and it’s likely that they will be able to secure a victory against Saint Mary’s. However, anything can happen in college basketball, so fans will have to tune in to see how this exciting matchup unfolds.

    • Against the spread: Gonzaga -1.5 (-110) | Saint Mary’s +1.5 (-110)

Gonzaga at Saint Mary’s picks and predictions

    Prediction

    Saint Mary’s 79, Gonzaga 75

    Moneyline

SAINT MARY’S (+105) is a solid play at home as short ‘dogs in this conference clash between rivals.

Gonzaga (-125) has been good, but not great this season, and Saint Mary’s has yet to lose in conference play. The Gaels are worth a look, as their past 3 home victories are by an average margin of 25.0 points per game (PPG), with 4 in a row by double digits.

    Against the spread

Playing Saint Mary’s +1.5 (-110) makes no sense, as if you like the Gaels, going with the moneyline is a much better value. Unless you strongly believe Gonzaga -1.5 (-110) is going to win, but only by a single point, go with the Gaels on the moneyline instead.

Saint Mary’s is 7-1 ATS in the past 8 games, including 3 straight covers at home.

For Gonzaga, it is just 2-4 ATS in the past 6 outings, while cashing at a 3-11 ATS clip since Dec. 7. On the road or in neutral-site games, the Zags are just 2-5 ATS in the past 7 outings.

PASS, and look to the moneyline instead.

    Over/Under

OVER 144.5 (-110) is a strong play in this conference tilt in Moraga.

Gonzaga has scored 81 or more points in 9 consecutive outings, but it could struggle against the suffocating defense of Saint Mary’s. The Over is 6-1 in the past 7 games for the Zags, while the Over has a slight 4-3 edge in the past 7 for the Gaels.

Gonzaga at Saint Mary’s Odds, Picks and Predictions

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are set to take on the Saint Mary’s Gaels in what is sure to be an exciting West Coast Conference matchup. Both teams are coming off strong performances and will be looking to carry that momentum into this game.

Currently, Gonzaga is favored to win this game with odds of -10.5. The Bulldogs are currently ranked as the number one team in the nation and boast an impressive record of 17-2. On the other hand, Saint Mary’s has been holding their own with a record of 14-5 and will be looking to pull off an upset in front of their home crowd.

In terms of picks and predictions, it’s hard to go against Gonzaga in this matchup. The Bulldogs have been dominant all season long and have shown no signs of slowing down. Their high-powered offense, led by stars like Drew Timme and Andrew Nembhard, will likely be too much for Saint Mary’s to handle.

That being said, Saint Mary’s is a talented team in their own right and should not be underestimated. They have the ability to keep this game close and could potentially pull off a surprise victory if everything goes their way.

Overall, the smart money is on Gonzaga to come out on top in this game. However, don’t count out Saint Mary’s to put up a fight and keep things interesting until the final buzzer sounds. It’s sure to be an exciting matchup between two talented teams in the WCC.

  • Gonzaga’s Ryan Nembhard, Saint Mary’s Augustas Marciulionis a clash of styles

MORAGA, Calif. – It’s more like key matchups rather than one key matchup when it comes to Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s.

It doesn’t get much better than posts Gonzaga’s Graham Ike and Mitchell Saxen dishing out bruises. Or GU’s Ben Gregg facing Arizona transfer Paulius Murauskas, who has nine double-doubles.

Perhaps not at the forefront but just as important: Nolan Hickman, hot lately from behind the 3-point line, matching up against sophomore Jordan Ross, who supplies Saint Mary’s with several of the same things Hickman does for the Zags.

All worthy candidates, but the nod here goes to the two best point guards in the West Coast Conference: Gonzaga assists machine Ryan Nembhard and Saint Mary’s counterpart Augustas Marciulionis, the reigning WCC Player of the Year and conference tournament most outstanding player.

The two standouts go about it in different ways. The 6-foot, 180-pound Nembhard directs one of the top offenses in the country, excelling in transition and the half-court.

Nembhard, at his nation-leading rate of 9.9 assists per game, would break the school’s single-season record he set last year (243) in three games. The Ontario native, who played two seasons at Creighton before transferring to Gonzaga, is No. 1 in NCAA Division I career assists by a Canadian with 755, passing Marcus Carr’s 747 with nine assists in Tuesday’s win over Oregon State. His older brother Andrew, a former standout point guard at Gonzaga, is third at 691.

Nembhard’s 4.52 assist-to-turnover ratio is No. 2 nationally and his 37.7% 3-point accuracy is the highest of his career. The senior averages 11 points per game, a career low, because he’s attempting at least 1.5 fewer shots per game than his first three seasons.

Nembhard has scored just eight points on seven shot attempts in the past two games, but Gonzaga put up 105 and 98 points, respectively, against Portland and Oregon State. He finished with 23 assists and only two turnovers in those two wins.

Marciulionis pilots a Saint Mary’s offense that is efficient but usually operates at a slower pace. He has scored at least 22 points in four games and has a pair of 11-assist outings. He’s hit a career-best 36% on 3s and his 13.6 scoring average is well ahead of last year’s 12.4.

The 6-4, 200-pound senior is 38th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.66). Teammate Jordan Ross (3.14) is 19th nationally. Marciulionis is also a high-level defender.

Nembhard averaged 17 points on 52.4% shooting, 7.3 assists and 2.7 turnovers while playing all 40 minutes in every game as the Zags went 1-2 against the Gaels last season. Marciulionis averaged 11.3 points, 50% shooting, 5.7 assists, 1.7 turnovers and 38.7 minutes in those three games.

The point guard who gets his team’s offense into a comfort zone and keeps it there the longest will likely come out on top in this showdown of the WCC’s perennial powers.

Nembhard and Marciulionis might end up guarding each other, but there’s also a chance of cross-matching. Hickman could be assigned to Marciulionis and vice versa and the same goes for Nembhard and Ross.

Gonzaga’s Ryan Nembhard and Saint Mary’s Augustas Marciulionis: A Clash of Styles

When Gonzaga’s Ryan Nembhard and Saint Mary’s Augustas Marciulionis take the court, fans are in for a clash of styles that promises to be both exciting and intense. Nembhard, a dynamic point guard known for his speed and playmaking abilities, will be tasked with navigating the Gaels’ defense led by Marciulionis, a physical and tenacious defender.

Nembhard’s ability to break down defenses with his quickness and court vision will be put to the test against Marciulionis, who prides himself on shutting down opposing guards with his relentless pressure and defensive instincts. The matchup between these two talented players is sure to be a highlight of the game, as they battle for control of the tempo and momentum.

As the game unfolds, fans can expect to see Nembhard’s flashy passes and scoring prowess go head-to-head with Marciulionis’ gritty defense and ability to disrupt opposing offenses. Both players bring unique skills and strengths to the table, making this clash of styles one to watch for any basketball enthusiast.

In the end, it will be a battle of wills between Nembhard and Marciulionis, with each player looking to outsmart and outplay the other. Whether it’s Nembhard’s finesse or Marciulionis’ physicality that ultimately prevails, one thing is for certain – fans are in for a thrilling matchup when these two talented players face off on the court.

  • The traditions, myths and miracles of Saint Brigid

Although the first of February has always marked St Brigid’s day, 2023 was the first year to see the day dedicated to the saint as a public holiday.

We sat down with Catherine Healy, Historian in Residence at EPIC (Irish Emigration Museum) to discuss the history, myths, miracles, and traditions associated with Ireland’s female patron saint.

According to Healy, the details surroundings Brigid’s life are sparse, and what we do know comes from the writings of a churchman named Cogitosus around 658AD – about two centuries after her death.

From these writings, we know that Brigid was born into slavery around AD 450 in Faughart, near Dundalk, to a slave mother and noble father. She was eventually freed, along with her mother, and returned to live with her father, but there was tension in his household as she had a tendency to give away food and belongings to the poor.

Refusing to bow to pressure from her father to marry a suitor, she vowed to become a nun and went on to establish Ireland’s first convent in Kildare, which developed into a community for both nuns and monks.

“She travels around the country preaching and blessing people,” explains Healy, “she sets up a school of art that becomes famous for its illuminated manuscripts, including the Book of Kildare. That monastery is said to be one of the richest and most important religious communities in Ireland.”

“She’s very much a saint of the common people,” says continues. “If you look at her miracles, they generally involved helping people whether it be feeding the hungry, preventing violence, and she is said to have cured people of conditions.”

    Getty Images

The story of how Brigid gained the land in Kildare for her monastery is one that many will remember learning about in school while making straw crosses.

“The story goes that she approached the King of Leinster for land in which to build her monastery and she says ‘give me as much land as my cloak can cover’. The King initially refuses but when he hears of this suggestion and sees the sight of her cloak, he laughs and agrees. According to legend, she has people take a corner of the cloak and walk in opposite directions and the cloak begins to grow and spread across hundred of acres.”

In 2018, during the abortion referendum debate, another story about Brigid gained publicity. Found in the writings of Cogitosus, the tale references an account of Brigid performing an abortion.

“Cogitosus tells a story of this woman coming to her with an unwanted pregnancy, and says that Brigid blessed her and caused the fetus to disappear without any pain to her,” says Healy.

“I suppose she serves different symbolic functions depending on the time and context,” she adds, explaining that Brigid “very much broke the mold as a woman, as a powerful female ecclesiastical authority” and has since become “an inspiration to generations of women’s rights activists.”

Today, St Brigid is commemorated with a feast day on 1 February, and a new public holiday will also be held in her honour on Monday, 6 February.

As well as making crosses, Healy says there are plenty of traditions to take part in for those wanting to celebrate.

The Biddy Boys is a tradition particularly associated with Kerry, but it’s basically a group of young people dressing in straw and going around houses in their area to play music, and usually they would have a doll or effigy of Saint Brigid and they collect money then to organise a dance or a party in her honour.

“There’s also a tradition of leaving a ribbon outside the house the night before Brigid’s Feast Day. According to legend, she would have moved through the country that night and blessed it. Then, that could have been used to cure various ills.

“People also visit the holy wells associated with her, and the water would be said to have healing powers.”

Although she died at the age of 75 in 525AD, and was buried in the church she created, Saint Brigid’s remains have since moved.

Years after her death, her body was exhumed and brought to Downpatrick to be buried alongside her fellow patron saints, Patrick and Columcille.

Later, her skull was moved to an area just outside of Lisbon, Portugal, by a trio of Irish knights, where it remains on display to this day.

There will be plenty of activities and workshops surrounding Saint Brigid in Dublin’s Epic museum as well as activity packs for tiny tots available on the website. Click here for more info.

Saint Brigid, also known as Brigit of Kildare, is one of Ireland’s most beloved saints. She is often associated with spring, healing, and poetry, and her feast day on February 1st is celebrated with various traditions, myths, and miracles.

One of the most well-known traditions associated with Saint Brigid is the making of Brigid’s crosses. These crosses are woven from rushes or straw and are said to bring protection and blessings to the home. It is believed that hanging a Brigid’s cross above the door will ward off evil spirits and bring good luck to those who dwell within.

Saint Brigid is also associated with healing and is often invoked for protection against illnesses and diseases. Many people visit her holy wells and shrines in the hopes of receiving healing and blessings for themselves or loved ones.

In Irish folklore, there are many myths and legends surrounding Saint Brigid. One of the most popular stories is that she was able to miraculously multiply food and drink to feed the poor and hungry. Another legend tells of how she transformed her bathwater into beer to quench the thirst of a group of weary travelers.

Saint Brigid is also known for her poetic talents and is said to have composed beautiful prayers and hymns in praise of God. She is often depicted with a quill and parchment, symbolizing her connection to writing and creativity.

Overall, Saint Brigid is a figure of inspiration and hope for many, and her traditions, myths, and miracles continue to be celebrated and honored to this day. Let us remember her legacy and the many blessings she brings to those who call upon her name.

A large brawl which appeared to involve at least a dozen fans broke out at a men’s college basketball game between Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and Saint Louis on Tuesday, causing the game to be halted for a number of minutes.

With Saint Louis leading 69-63 and 1:10 remaining, a fight at Chaifetz Arena in Missouri spilled out over rows of seats and down onto the floor near the VCU bench. It is not clear what caused the fight to break out.

Security and police quickly rushed in to try and break it up, while players on the court remained in their huddles. CBS Sports coverage also picked up other fans apparently booing those involved in the fight.

CNN has reached out to Saint Louis University and VCU for comment.

Footage captured by CNN affiliate KSDK News appeared to show an older man emerging from the melee with blood on his face and neck.

The game eventually resumed after a delay of about seven minutes, according to The Associated Press, and the Billikens completed their 78-69 win over the Rams.

Saint Louis’ Gibson Jimerson racked up a game-high 26 points, complemented by Kobe Johnson scoring 19 with six rebounds, and Robbie Avila adding 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Phillip Russell and Zeb Jackson each scored 15 for VCU.

It is unclear what led to the fight breaking out at Chaifetz Arena.

In his post-match press conference, Billikens head coach Josh Schertz chose to focus on the positive energy brought by fans.

“Our guys were feeding off the energy of the home crowd. They were into it. They lifted us at times, when we were tired. Students were awesome,” he said. “We don’t get through this game without them.”

The win – Saint Louis’ fifth in a row at home – halts VCU’s six-game winning streak and draws the Billikens level with the Rams in second place in the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10), behind George Mason.

Having already played each other once this season before Tuesday – a 78-62 win for VCU on January 14 – the teams can only meet again this season if they do so in the A-10 conference tournament in March.

In a shocking turn of events, a large brawl erupted between fans during the VCU vs Saint Louis college basketball game, causing a significant delay in the game.

The altercation started in the stands and quickly escalated, with punches being thrown and chaos ensuing. Security and officials were forced to intervene to break up the fight and restore order.

The incident left many fans shaken and bewildered, as college basketball games are typically known for their spirited but friendly atmosphere. It is unclear what sparked the brawl or if any arrests were made.

As a result of the altercation, the game was delayed for several minutes as the situation was brought under control. Both teams were eventually able to resume play, but the incident left a dark cloud over what was supposed to be a competitive and exciting matchup.

This serves as a stark reminder of the importance of sportsmanship and respect among fans, as incidents like these have no place in the world of college athletics. Let’s hope that steps are taken to prevent such behavior in the future and that fans can enjoy the game in a safe and respectful manner.

  • Fight between fans delays Saint Louis’ victory over VCU

A fight between fans in the stands near the VCU bench caused a Rams’ Atlantic 10 Conference game with Saint Louis to be delayed about seven minutes with 1:10 remaining in regulation.

The Billikens led 69-63 when fans wrestling with each other stumbled across rows of seats and onto the floor.

“You don’t often see this in college basketball, but there is a heck of a brawl going on in the stands,” play-by-play announcer Tom McCarthy said on the CBS Sports Network as the melee ensued. “The police officers and the security have come over and tried to help out almost immediately to slow it all down.”

Both teams huddled around their coaching staffs on the court as the brawl broke up, and the participants were led up the stairs from the section.

When the contest resumed, the Billikens were able to close it out. Gibson Jimerson scored 26 points as Saint Louis outlasted VCU 78-69.

Jimerson had five rebounds for the Billikens (13-8, 6-2). Kobe Johnson scored 19 points while going 6-of-10 from the floor, including 2-for-5 from 3-point range, and 5-for-6 from the free throw line and added six rebounds. Robbie Avila shot 3-of-5 from the field and 8-for-8 from the foul line to finish with 14 points.

Zeb Jackson led the Rams (16-5, 6-2) in scoring, finishing with 15 points and two steals. Phillip Russell added 15 points for VCU. Max Shulga also had 14 points. The loss ended a six-game winning streak for the Rams.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

In a shocking turn of events, a fight between fans delayed Saint Louis’ victory over VCU. The intense rivalry between the two teams boiled over into chaos as fans from both sides clashed in the stands, causing a delay in the game.

The fight broke out in the second half of the game, with tensions running high as both teams fought for the lead. Security quickly intervened to break up the altercation, but not before the game was temporarily halted.

Despite the disruption, Saint Louis managed to maintain their focus and secure a hard-fought victory over VCU. However, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the passion and intensity that can sometimes escalate to dangerous levels in sports rivalries.

Both teams and their respective fan bases will need to reflect on this incident and work towards ensuring that such behavior does not happen again in the future. Sports should be a source of enjoyment and camaraderie, not violence and conflict. Let’s hope that this serves as a wake-up call for all involved to behave in a respectful and sportsmanlike manner in the future.

My Saint Joe’s vs Dayton College Basketball Betting Preview

These are two of the top three teams from the Atlantic 10’s Preseason Poll, but the Hawks and Flyers have had their fair share of ups and downs this season.

The road Hawks beat Villanova and Texas Tech in the non-conference, but they also have losses to Central Connecticut State, Charleston and Princeton.

Meanwhile, the Flyers have wins over UConn, Marquette and UNLV, but they also suffered a recent three-game losing streak that featured a 20-point loss to George Washington and defeats against UMass and George Mason.

So, how am I betting this matchup between two quality Atlantic 10 teams?

Well, I’ll start by saying this: The Flyers can ill-afford any more Quad 3 or Quad 4 losses. This would go down as a Quad 3 defeat, so I don’t expect Dayton to drop this one at home.

The Flyers have also rebounded nicely since that three-game hiccup, beating Loyola Chicago at home and pounding Duquesne by 20 on the road.

But I think six is way too many points against a Saint Joe’s team that has arguably the best backcourt in the Atlantic 10.

Xzayvier Brown, Erik Reynolds II and Derek Simpson is a strong three-headed attack, and that’s without even discussing versatile junior forward Rasheer Fleming, who opens up Saint Joe’s offense.

Dayton has its own powerful backcourt — Enoch Cheeks, Malachi Smith and Javon Bennett — and possesses leading scorer Nate Santos up front. However, Anthony Grant’s team could be without two key contributors, Posh Alexander (foot) and Zed Key (back).

Also, Bart Torvik has this spread closer to Dayton -3, which gives us some nice value on a team I already think is being undervalued because of its season-long inconsistencies.

As the college basketball season heats up, one of the most anticipated matchups this weekend is between Saint Joseph’s and Dayton on January 24th. Both teams have had their fair share of ups and downs this season, making this game a must-watch for fans.

The odds for this game are currently favoring Dayton, with the Flyers listed as -6.5 point favorites. However, Saint Joseph’s has proven to be a tough competitor, especially on the road, so this game could go either way.

When it comes to picks and predictions, it’s important to consider both teams’ recent performances and key players. Dayton’s Jalen Crutcher has been a standout player this season, leading the team in scoring and assists. On the other hand, Saint Joseph’s has been relying on Jordan Hall to lead the team in points and rebounds.

In terms of predictions, it’s likely to be a close game with both teams fighting for the win. However, with Dayton’s home-court advantage and strong performances from Crutcher, they may have the edge in this matchup.

Overall, this game is sure to be an exciting one for college basketball fans. Stay tuned for more updates and analysis as the game approaches.

  • What to know about Friday’s game against Saint Joseph’s

Dayton owned a 25-point lead at that point. The game had devolved into a pickup game of sorts with both teams playing loose — Dayton because it knew it had won and Duquesne for the opposite reason. That’s one reason the Flyers had dunks, including L’Etang’s, on four straight possessions.

The Flyers rolled to an 82-62 victory at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse in Pittsburgh, improving to 2-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference play when L’Etang starts. Grant talked about the lineup change after the 83-81 overtime victory against Loyola Chicago at UD Arena on Saturday.

“Certainly, I thought he’s earned it with his consistency,” Grant said. “We’re just switching things up. Obviously, when you drop three in a row, you’re looking for something to kind of give you a spark. Whether we win or lose, I’m always trying to figure it out.”

L’Etang, a 7-foot-1 freshman, moved into the starting lineup after Dayton’s third straight loss, taking the place of Zed Key, who had started all season — except when Dayton rested him, Enoch Cheeks and Posh Alexander against Division III Capital University in November.

Time will tell how much of an impact the change will have. Dayton beat Loyola when L’Etang sprinted past his defender, caught an alley-oop pass from Malachi Smith and scored on a layup with 0.2 seconds to play. Against Duquesne, with Key sidelined by a back injury, L’Etang scored a career-high 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting in 27 minutes.

L’Etang has averaged 13.0 points in 26.7 minutes per game in Dayton’s three A-10 victories. In the three losses to George Washington, Massachusetts and George Mason, he scored a total of four points and played 11, 14 and 16 minutes, respectively.

L’Etang is the tallest player in UD history. If his entrance into the starting lineup results in the kind of winning streak Dayton needs to get back into contention in the A-10, the lineup change will go down as one of the most significant in recent memory. Even a modest two-game winning streak has boosted optimism around the team.

“We just had to weather the storm,” guard Javon Bennett said. “We’re going to have parts of the year where we have slumps. Coach just said, ‘Stay positive. Let’s get over this hump.’ I feel like the win at home the other day helped. Now we want to keep stacking wins.”

Dayton (13-6, 3-3) returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Saint Joseph’s (12-7, 3-3). Here are 10 things to know about Dayton’s 20th game:

    1. Series history: Dayton leads the series 27-20. It has won the last four games.

    2. Recent meetings: Dayton scored 60 points in the second half and beat Saint Joseph’s 94-79 last season at Hagan Arena in Philadelphia. Two years ago, when the Hawks last visited Dayton, the Flyers won 76-56. That was the fifth straight loss for Saint Joseph’s at UD Arena since a 60-57 victory on a last-second 3-pointer by Langston Galloway in 2014.

    2. State of the program: The Hawks have improved their record every season under coach Billy Lange, who’s in his sixth season: 6-26 to 5-15 to 11-19 to 16-17 to 21-14. The program last reached the NCAA tournament in 2016. It has not won the A-10 regular-season championship since the league did away with divisions starting in the 2005-06 season.

Saint Joseph’s was picked to finish third in the preseason poll.

    4. Non-conference summary: Saint Joseph’s finished 9-4 in November and December. It beat Texas Tech, which is No. 10 in the NCAA Evaluation Tool, for its best victory. Its worst loss came against No. 190 Central Connecticut State.

    5. A-10 play: Saint Joseph’s has victories at home against Massachusetts and Loyola Chicago and a 78-61 road victory in its most recent game Tuesday against Davidson. It lost at Saint Louis and Duquesne and fell at home to Virginia Commonwealth.

    6. Standings update: George Mason (15-5, 6-1), Virginia Commonwealth (15-4, 5-1) and Saint Louis (11-7, 4-1) top the standings as the only one-loss teams. Duquesne (9-10, 4-2) sits alone in fourth place.

UMass (9-11, 4-3) is in fifth place after beating George Washington 74-61 on Wednesday. Dayton and Saint Joseph’s are tied for sixth.

    7. Top returners: Xzayvier Brown, a 6-foot-2 sophomore guard, ranked second in scoring last season and leads the team in scoring this season (16.1). He scored 20 points Tuesday against Davidson and has scored 20 or more points three games in a row.

    • Rasheer Fleming, a 6-foot-9 junior forward, ranked fourth in scoring last season and second this season (15.9).

    • Erik Reynolds, a 6-2 senior guard, led the team in scoring last season (17.3) and ranks second this season (15.3). He passed the 1,900-point mark Tuesday.

    8. Top newcomer: Derek Simpson, a 6-3 junior guard, ranks fourth in scoring (10.4). He played the last two seasons at Rutgers.

    9. Strengths and weaknesses: Saint Joseph’s leads the A-10 in 3-pointers made per game (10.2) in conference play. Dayton ranks eighth (7.8).

    • Saint Joseph’s ranks 12th in the A-10 in turnover margin (minus 1.83) in conference play. Dayton is second(plus 2.83).

    10. Odds & Ends: KenPom.com gives Dayton an 70% chance of winning and predicts a 76-70 score. Dayton climbed from No. 67 to No. 61 in the Pomeroy ratings after beating Duquesne. Saint Joseph’s is No. 86.

    • Dayton ranks 68th in the NCAA Evaluation Tool. It is the second highest-ranked A-10 team behind No. 47 VCU. No. 86 Saint Joseph’s is the fourth highest-ranked A-10 team.

This is a Quad 3 game for Dayton and a Quad 1 game for Saint Joseph’s.

    Dayton is 2-3 in Quad 1 games, 1-2 in Quad 2, 4-1 in Quad 3 and 5-0 in Quad 4. Saint Joseph’s is 1-1 in Quad 1, 2-2 in Quad 2, 3-3 in Quad 3 and 6-1 in Quad 4.
