  • Sean Payton challenges Nick Saban’s Drew Brees Saints story | Saints

Former Saints head coach Sean Payton took to social media Wednesday to challenge legendary former Alabama head coach Nick Saban on his recollection of how Drew Brees ended up in New Orleans in 2006.

Nineteen years ago, Saban was entering his second campaign as the head coach of the Dolphins following a 9-7 season.

Despite the winning mark, the Dolphins went into free agency in desperate need of a quarterback and pursued Brees, who was recovering from a shoulder injury he suffered during the 2005 season finale with the San Diego Chargers.

On “The Pivot Podcast,” Saban said Brees was ready to sign with the Dolphins, but he failed his physical.

“You can’t call up the owner and say, ‘Hey, we’re going to sign this guy and give him all this money … and he might not be able to play,” Saban said. “So, I didn’t want to get in that briar patch with the owner, so I said ‘OK.’”

    The rest was history.

“I actually regretted it because that year, Drew Brees plays lights out for New Orleans,” Saban said.

Of course, Brees went on to become the greatest player in Saints franchise history from 2006-21, and led the team to its only Super Bowl championship in 2010.

Saban said after the Dolphins couldn’t sign Brees, he called Brees’ agent and told him about the failed physical. Saban said Brees’ agent said news of the quarterback’s failed physical couldn’t become publicized because then no team would want to sign him.

“And I said, ‘Nobody would know,’” Saban said. “‘How much time do you need?’ He said, ‘Like, 72 hours.’ I never told anybody. Nobody knew [about the failed physical] for 72 hours until he signed with New Orleans.”

    Sean Payton isn’t buying it

Payton, who is now the head coach of the Denver Broncos after leaving the Saints in 2022, commented on the clip with a simple sentence.

“A little bit missing in this piece…” Payton responded to the clip that “Pivot” host Ryan Clark posted on X.

Brees, who retired after the 2020 season, was lured to New Orleans by Payton and the Saints front office. On a Payton-guided tour of a city still recovering from Hurricane Katrina in 2006, the former Purdue quarterback was given a glimpse of what awaited him in New Orleans.

After giving the Brees family a tour of the northshore of Lake Pontchartrain, Payton returned to the city and took a wrong turn down a road that was blocked by a tugboat.

Aside from the emotional aspect of taking on the challenge of helping lift an entire city and region, Brees said he felt more wanted by Payton and the Saints.

“The trips were very different in the feelings that I got from the people,” Brees said, according to a 2009 Times-Picayune story. “Miami was one of those kind of places that, like, everyone would just expect, ‘Why wouldn’t you want to come to Miami?’ Whereas New Orleans was like, ‘We want you.’ Like, ‘We really want you. You are our guy. We have as much confidence in you as you have in yourself to come back from this injury and be better than you ever were before. And not only from the standpoint of the organization and the team, but also what you can do for the city.’”

After losing out on Brees, the Dolphins traded for Minnesota Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper, who also had health concerns coming into the 2006 season. While Brees bounced back and played the best football of his career post-torn labrum and damaged rotator cuff for 15 years, Culpepper regressed even more health wise and only lasted four more seasons in the NFL.

He played four games for the Dolphins.

In January 2007, Saban took the job to become the head coach at the University of Alabama.

In a recent interview, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton has challenged Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban’s story about Drew Brees almost becoming a member of the Miami Dolphins instead of the Saints.

Saban recently recalled in an interview that he almost signed Brees during his time as the Dolphins head coach, but the team ultimately chose to pass on him due to concerns about his shoulder injury. Brees went on to sign with the Saints in 2006 and become one of the most successful quarterbacks in NFL history.

Payton, however, has disputed Saban’s version of events, claiming that the Saints were always the top choice for Brees and that his shoulder injury was not a major concern for the team.

The two coaches have a long history together, with Payton serving as an assistant under Saban at both LSU and the Miami Dolphins. Despite their friendship, it seems that there may be some disagreement over the details of Brees’ decision to join the Saints.

It will be interesting to see if Saban responds to Payton’s challenge and how this story continues to unfold. Stay tuned for updates on this intriguing saga between two coaching legends.

  • Latter-day Saints announce location of planned Huntsville-area temple

Leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, popularly known as Mormons, have announced the location of its planned temple for the Huntsville area.

The Huntsville, Alabama Temple, which will serve Mormons who live in the region, will be built on a site of about 21 acres located at the southeast corner of Gillespie and Browns Ferry Road in Madison, church officials announced. Plans call for a single-story temple of approximately 30,000 square feet.

LDS President Russell M. Nelson, considered a living prophet for the Salt Lake City-based denomination, announced plans for 17 new temples worldwide during the church’s general conference on Oct. 6, 2024.

When opened, it would be the second Mormon temple in Alabama. The Birmingham area temple opened in Gardendale in 2000.

Nelson has announced 185 new temples, more than half of all the previous temples, since 2018.

“Why are we building temples at such an unprecedented pace? Why? Because the Lord has instructed us to do so,” Nelson said. “The blessings of the temple help to gather Israel on both sides of the veil. These blessings also help to prepare a people who will help prepare the world for the Second Coming of the Lord.”

Latter-day Saints worship weekly at church buildings called wards, which are local congregations. Stakes are groupings of congregations. Members of those congregations have to travel to a regional temple for certain rituals.

Two beliefs of the Latter-day Saints that are key to the temple rituals are baptism of the dead by proxy and the sealing of married couples and their families for eternity.

The church asserts that baptism of the dead restores an ancient practice cited in 1 Corinthians 15:29, in which the apostle Paul says, “Otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf?”

The theological emphasis on baptizing ancestors has resulted in the Latter-day Saints collecting probably the most extensive collection of genealogical information in the world, much of it available through its popular Web site, www.familysearch.org.

The Latter-day Saints teach that people in the afterlife still have a chance to make a decision for salvation.

The baptism and other rituals done on behalf of the dead are only good if the person in the spirit world accepts it, according to the faith.re

Helping those dead ancestors find salvation requires a lot of research on the family tree.

It’s considered the responsibility of members to trace their ancestry back as far as they can.

Baptism by proxy is done in a large baptismal pool in the temple; members over the age of 12 don white robes and are dunked once for each ancestor they represent. Baptisms by proxy are done by priests.

Those baptized by proxy then go on to the other rituals – receiving eternal rewards through endowments and being sealed to their spouses and children for all eternity. The sealings are done by a staff of about three to six ordinance workers authorized to perform the rituals.

Before the construction of the temple in Gardendale, Mormons in Alabama performed their rituals at other temples, such as the one in Atlanta. Having a second temple will rank as a monumental achievement signifying growth for Latter-day Saints in Alabama.

When the temple in Gardendale was dedicated, President and Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley visited and presided. Hinckley died in 2008. Alabama now has more than 40,000 LDS members in about 75 congregations.

Much of the growth is driven by missionaries who go door-to-door, sharing their faith.

Latter-day Saints believe that the angel Moroni directed founding prophet Joseph Smith to buried gold plates that contained the Book of Mormon in 1823. He published the Book of Mormon in 1830 and founded the church. Smith’s writings are the distinctive theological foundation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Latter-day Saints plan second temple in Alabama

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced the location of its planned temple in the Huntsville area. The temple will be located on a 16-acre site at the intersection of Pulaski Pike and Oakwood Road.

This announcement comes after years of planning and consideration by church leaders. The temple will serve as a sacred place of worship for Latter-day Saints in the Huntsville area and surrounding communities.

The Huntsville temple will be the first in the state of Alabama, and will provide a place for members to participate in sacred ordinances such as marriages, baptisms, and other ceremonies that are central to their faith.

Construction on the temple is expected to begin in the coming months, with an estimated completion date in the next few years. The temple will be a beautiful addition to the Huntsville community, and will serve as a symbol of the faith and dedication of Latter-day Saints in the area.

We are excited for this new chapter in the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Huntsville, and look forward to the blessings that this temple will bring to our community.

  • Mike Kafka emerges as top Saints coaching candidate with second interview

One of these mornings, Mike Kafka might wake up and find himself an NFL head coach.

The Giants’ 37-year-old offensive coordinator first spoke with Saints’ brass last week and is now being flown down to The Big Easy for a second interview on Tuesday,  NFL.com reported.

As New Orleans whittles down its list of candidates for the 19th head coach in franchise history, Kafka and Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver — scheduled for a second-round interview Wednesday, also per NFL.com — have emerged as leading contenders.

Kafka, a member of the Giants’ coaching staff since Brian Daboll took over in 2022, is no stranger to this process — he’s been a finalist for three jobs in the previous two cycles.

The former journeyman quarterback saw his coaching stock soar after his first season leading the Giants’ offense in 2022.

Just one year after finishing 4-13, Daniel Jones and company collected nine wins — the Giants’ most since 2016 — made the playoffs as a wild-card team and then beat the Minnesota Vikings, 31-24, in the opening round.

Jones, then in his fourth season, threw 15 touchdowns to just five interceptions and seemed to be turning a corner. His efforts were indubitably bolstered by Saquon Barkley’s work in the backfield, as the then-25-year-old amassed 1,312 yards and ten touchdowns in the regular season.

But as Giants fans know all too well, the metamorphosis into 2023 and beyond was not a pretty one.

The Giants’ offense tumbled noticeably the following season, ranking 30th in scoring and 29th in total yards — a drop-off of 14 and 11 spots, respectively, from the marks set a year prior.

This past season was even worse as the Giants finished 31st in scoring and 30th in total yards.

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll walks through the team’s facilities in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post

Despite the steadily declining offensive production, Kafka remains of interest to a number of teams with young quarterbacks under development.

In New Orleans, where the Derek Carr experiment has gone from bad to worse, it seems as though Spencer Rattler, 24, will find himself under center sooner rather than later.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler (18) throws a pass during the first half of an NFL game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in January 2025. AP

The soon-to-be sophomore wouldn’t be Kafka’s first pet project.

Prior to joining the Giants’ staff, he served as the quarterbacks coach in Kansas City from 2018 to 2021 — overlapping with Patrick Mahomes’ first four seasons as the Chiefs’ starting signal caller.

And after Kansas City won Super Bowl LIV in 2020, Kafka had the title of passing game coordinator added to his resume.

Over the following two seasons, the Chiefs went on to win four more playoff games and Mahomes earned his third and fourth consecutive Pro Bowl honors.

Kafka was given the additional title of assistant head coach for the Giants in February 2024.

The New Orleans Saints are in the midst of their search for a new head coach, and it looks like they may have found their top candidate. Mike Kafka, the current offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, has emerged as the favorite for the position after a successful second interview with the team.

Kafka, a former NFL quarterback who has quickly risen through the coaching ranks, has been instrumental in the Chiefs’ high-powered offense over the past few seasons. His innovative play-calling and ability to develop young quarterbacks have caught the attention of the Saints’ front office, who are looking for a coach to help lead their team into the future.

While nothing has been officially announced yet, many insiders believe that Kafka is the frontrunner for the job and could be the next head coach of the Saints. His second interview went well, and it seems like he has the support of key decision-makers within the organization.

If Kafka does indeed become the Saints’ new head coach, fans can expect an exciting and dynamic offense that will continue to compete at a high level in the NFC South. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Jets and Saints to meet with Lions DC

The New York Jets and New Orleans Saints are set to meet with Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to discuss their vacant head coaching positions. Glenn, who has been with the Lions for the past two seasons, has garnered praise for his work with the team’s defense.

Both the Jets and Saints are in the market for a new head coach after parting ways with their previous coaches at the end of the season. The Jets finished the season with a 4-13 record, while the Saints ended with a 9-8 record.

Glenn, a former NFL cornerback who played for the Jets, Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys, and New Orleans Saints during his playing career, has been widely regarded as a rising star in the coaching ranks. It will be interesting to see how these interviews play out and if Glenn will ultimately land one of these coveted head coaching positions. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Allen, Sanders, Williams, Panthers, Saints

Former Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich was hired to rejoin his old coworker, Raheem Morris, in Atlanta as defensive coordinator. This threw a wrench in some other plans in coaching searches around the league. Specifically, two teams that viewed him as a defensive coordinator candidate will have to look elsewhere to fill the position.

After Ulbrich filled in for a fired Robert Saleh in New York, he was likewise being viewed as a backup candidate for defensive coordinator behind Saleh in San Francisco. The 49ers are hoping to hire Saleh back to his old job as their defensive play-caller. Saleh is still interviewing for some open head coaching positions, though, and in case he becomes unavailable, Ulbrich was seemingly the second option.

The second team watching Ulbrich was whatever team ends up hiring former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Johnson had Ulbrich tabbed as the potential defensive coordinator on his first staff as an NFL head coach. Rapoport claims former Saints head coach Dennis Allen is the new name to look out for to join Johnson’s first staff.

Here are a few other rumors in staff conversations around the NFL:

    • As more and more hurdles continue to present themselves in the Cowboys‘ pursuit of Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, it’s beginning to seem like him becoming their next head coach is an unlikely scenario. According to another Rapoport report, the NFL Network reporter claimed he “would be surprised — probably very surprised — if (a formal interview) did, in fact, get scheduled.”
    • New Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel hasn’t spoken much of how much of the existing staff in New England will be salvaged, but the understanding seems to be that, like in most new head coaching situations, Vrabel will likely be replacing both coordinators. According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, one name to watch for defensive coordinator is Lions defensive line coach and run-game coordinator Terrell Williams. Williams was one of Vrabel’s most-trusted assistants during his time as head coach in Tennessee, where Williams served as assistant head coach in addition to his duties as defensive line coach. Especially with the likely turnover expected on the defensive staff in Detroit, it makes perfect sense that Williams would explore the opportunity to take his first coordinator position.
    • The Panthers are reportedly moving on from passing game coordinator Nate Carroll, son of former Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Joe Person of The Athletic confirmed the report, adding that the team does not expect Carroll back in any capacity.
    • Switching for moment from coaching staffs to the front office, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis addressed the consistency of staff in the team’s personnel department. Amidst questions concerning job security, Loomis claimed that “he loves (vice president/assistant general manager — college personnel) Jeff Ireland and (director of pro personnel) Michael Parenton in their” current roles, per Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football. While he does expect changes and tweaks in their processes and procedures, Irelend and Parenton’s jobs appear secure.

Allen, Sanders, Williams: Panthers vs. Saints

The Carolina Panthers are gearing up to face off against the New Orleans Saints in a highly anticipated matchup. With star quarterback Kyle Allen leading the charge for the Panthers, fans are hopeful for a strong performance on the field.

On the other side, the Saints will be relying on veteran quarterback Drew Brees and dynamic running back Alvin Kamara to secure a victory. But with the recent addition of wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, the Saints offense could pose a serious threat to the Panthers defense.

Meanwhile, the Panthers will be looking to their own playmakers, like running back Mike Davis and wide receiver DJ Moore, to make big plays and put points on the board.

As these two NFC South rivals go head-to-head, it’s sure to be an exciting game full of twists and turns. Will Allen, Sanders, and Williams lead their teams to victory, or will the Panthers or Saints come out on top? Stay tuned to find out!

    WHAT’S AT STAKE?

Saints will be looking to start the New Year by picking up the first points of the Ivan Jurić era against a Brentford side who haven’t enjoyed travelling this season.

The Bees have picked up the same amount of points as Liverpool on home soil, but have returned to London with only two points from their travels.

That provides an opportunity for the hosts to claim a vital three points and a timely boost before the Premier League pauses for the third round of the FA Cup next weekend.

    TEAM NEWS

Ivan Jurić will have to wait to see if midfielder Flynn Downes is fit enough to make a return, having missed the trip to Crystal Palace with a knock picked up on Boxing Day against West Ham.

One definite absentee will be Mateus Fernandes, with the Portuguese serving a one-match suspension for accumulating five yellow cards.

Elsewhere, captain Jack Stephens faces another four weeks out through injury, with Will Smallbone edging closer to a potential return after resuming first team training in recent weeks.

    THE MANAGERS

Ivan Jurić: “We did well against Crystal Palace and West Ham. I think the players are really motivated, they want to change the situation. They want to do better than before and they know it’s not enough.

“But it seems the players are really comfortable with the way we want to play. Now after two weeks I have clear ideas. I think we have to use everybody, try to work with everybody and they’ll give us something.”

Thomas Frank: “I’ve watched the two games they have played under the new manager Ivan Jurić and they have changed a bit. They don’t take as many risks when they are building up. They go longer sometimes to Onuachu up top, who is a handful.

“They went from being 15th to second for crosses, on average; there are a few tactical tweaks that we need to be aware of. It’s a good team. I know they are bottom of the league but nothing is easy in the Premier League, we know that.”

    ONES TO WATCH

Tyler Dibling: The teenager’s goal at Crystal Palace last time out made him the first player under the age of 18 to score twice in the Premier League this season.

With Ivan Jurić deploying Dibling as a number 10 with license to get into the box, the Academy graduate will want to keep up his scoring form.

Mikkel Damsgaard: While Mbeumo and Wissa make the headlines for their goals, it’s Damsgaard who keeps Brentford ticking from midfield.

An assist in the defeat to Arsenal in midweek takes the Dane’s tally to five for the season, chipping in with three goals as well.
