  • Bournemouth 0 Liverpool 2: Salah reaches 20 goals (again), Alexander-Arnold’s injury and a midfield tweak

Liverpool moved nine points clear at the top of the Premier League thanks to two goals from Mohamed Salah against Bournemouth.

That took Salah’s tally in the Premier League this season to 21 goals but there were worrying signs in the second half for Arne Slot as Trent Alexander-Arnold went off holding his thigh.

That was the only blemish for Liverpool as they secured an important win against one of the Premier League’s most in-form teams. Bournemouth’s last defeat in any competition had come on November 23 against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Gregg Evans and Mark Carey analyse the key talking points from the Vitality Stadium.

Salah hits 20-goal milestone and has Aguero in his sights

Salah held his nerve to tuck away the penalty that moved him onto 20 league goals for the season before adding a superb 21st in the second half.

Salah was given some rough treatment early into the game but stepped up when it mattered in the 30th minute to convert after Lewis Cook had tripped Cody Gakpo in the box. And in the 75th minute, he curled home to make it 2-0 after being set up by Curtis Jones.

Salah joins Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane in reaching the 20-goal milestone in a Premier League season for the fifth time.

The last time he hit such numbers was back in 2021-22. At 32, he’s showing no signs of slowing up. With four months of the campaign remaining, he could rival his best goalscoring Premier League season (32 goals in 2017-18).

Salah’s importance to the team, even when he isn’t at his best, is clear. His latest goal moved him to sixth on the all-time Premier League goalscoring chart (178 goals, one ahead of Frank Lampard).

Next in his sights is Sergio Aguero on 184…

    Gregg Evans

Alexander-Arnold injury is a worry for Liverpool

Clutching his thigh as he departed midway through the second half, Alexander-Arnold’s injury was the only downside of an impressive away win.

Alexander-Arnold was tasked with keeping Bournemouth’s in-form left-side players in check and performed admirably for large periods.

He limited the threat of Antoine Semenyo and stayed tight to Milos Kerkez when he pushed on, and rather than bombing forward himself, he sat deep and stuck to his defensive duties for most of the game.

Seeing his afternoon cut short was disappointing, especially as he has only completed 12 full 90-minute outings in the Premier League this season.

Conor Bradley, the replacement right-back, will be braced to step in for Liverpool’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday if Alexander-Arnold requires time on the sidelines.

    Gregg Evans

Slot’s midfield tweak to combat the threat of Kluivert

Ryan Gravenberch has been Liverpool’s metronome this season.

From a defensive midfield position in the centre of the field, the Netherlands international’s press resistance and comfort on the ball have allowed team-mate Alexis Mac Allister to push forward and influence the game from more of an advanced position.

However, against Bournemouth, there was a notable tweak to Gravenberch’s game — he appeared to be pushed out to a wider position while Mac Allister acted more as Liverpool’s pivot in possession, as illustrated in Liverpool’s passing map in the dashboard below.

Given Bournemouth’s recent form, perhaps Slot was acutely aware of the attacking threat offered by Justin Kluivert — who likes to pull wide left from a central attacking midfield position — which forced Gravenberch across to look after his fellow countryman out of possession.

It wasn’t Gravenberch’s most influential game. There were fewer driving runs, an absence of those sharp turns, and he even picked up a yellow card in the second half for a needless foul.

However, it was a disciplined tactical display overall and only adds to the glowing praise he has been given under his new manager. With the intensity that Bournemouth provide in midfield areas, it was a job well done by Gravenberch with his slightly tweaked role.

    Liverpool embraced the chaos

    The narratives were set.

Bournemouth have grown into one of the most effective transitional sides in the Premier League, capable of punishing you with direct play and relentless pressing. The issue? They were coming up against a Liverpool side equally comfortable playing like that — and have been for many seasons.

It was a fraught contest, full of niggly fouls and exchanges of possession as each side pressed tightly onto one another. Liverpool’s considered build-up was thrown out of the window — they showed direct play of their own, bypassing Bournemouth’s press as they looked to use their strength on the transition.

Ultimately, that is how both Salah’s goals came about. The penalty was won after a long, direct ball to Gakpo, who was tripped by Cook. The second was a typical Liverpool breakaway goal, with substitute Darwin Nunez driving forward before passing to Jones, who found Salah to finish beautifully into the top corner.

Bournemouth have gained a lot of their advantages from making games chaotic this season. Against Liverpool, they found a team willing to embrace the disorder.

    Mark Carey

    What did Arne Slot say?

On Alexander-Arnold: “The situation was that Trent said to me ‘you have to take me off’ and he sat on the floor.

“He felt something. I can’t tell you exactly what or how bad it is because it’s only an hour after the game.

“But it’s never a good sign when a player is asking for a substitution. I would be surprised if he plays on Thursday. Let’s hope he’s back with us as soon as possible.”

    What next for Liverpool?

In a dominant performance against Bournemouth, Liverpool secured a 2-0 victory with Mohamed Salah once again reaching the milestone of 20 goals for the season. The Egyptian forward has been in scintillating form and continues to be a crucial player for the team.

However, the win was not without its concerns as right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold had to be substituted due to injury. The extent of his injury is yet to be confirmed but it will be a worrying situation for Liverpool fans as Alexander-Arnold has been an integral part of the team’s success this season.

In response to Alexander-Arnold’s injury, manager Jurgen Klopp made a midfield tweak, bringing on Naby Keita to bolster the midfield and provide more defensive cover. The change paid off as Liverpool maintained control of the game and secured the victory.

Overall, it was a solid performance from Liverpool as they continue their march towards the Premier League title. However, the injury to Alexander-Arnold and the need for a midfield tweak serve as a reminder that challenges can arise at any moment in football.

Pre-Match Facts: Mohamed Salah Could Make Premier League History in Liverpool’s Clash with Bournemouth

Mohamed Salah, Liverpool’s No.11, stands on the cusp of a historic milestone as he gears up for the upcoming clash against AFC Bournemouth. Already with 19 goals this season, scoring once more will see him join the prestigious ranks of Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Sergio Aguero, and Harry Kane—each having netted 20+ goals in five different Premier League campaigns. This elite status, detailed by liverpoolfc.com, not only underscores Salah’s consistent excellence but also his pivotal role in Liverpool’s offensive machinery.

Salah’s Track Record and Liverpool’s Form

Salah’s journey has been nothing short of spectacular, with a tally of 176 Premier League goals, positioning him just shy of Frank Lampard in the all-time scorers list. His ability to influence games is further highlighted by the Reds’ ongoing unbeaten streak in the league, currently standing at 18 games, a testament to their formidable form. This weekend, against a Bournemouth team that has shown resilience at the Vitality Stadium, beating both Manchester City and Arsenal this season, Salah’s prowess will be crucial for Liverpool to maintain their momentum.

    Liverpool’s Tactical Edge

Strategically, Liverpool has excelled in converting high turnovers into scoring opportunities, a facet where Salah’s speed and precision come to the forefront. The team has managed more shots from high turnovers than most, second only to Bournemouth. This stat suggests a dynamic match-up where both teams will look to exploit any lapses in the opponent’s half. Furthermore, Liverpool’s record of winning all 14 games in which they’ve scored first this season augurs well for their chances if Salah or his teammates can break the deadlock early.

    Potential Records and Historical Comparisons

This game is not just about the present but resonates deeply with historical significance. The last team to conquer the top three sides from the previous season’s standings, as Bournemouth aims to, was Blackburn Rovers in 2005-06—a narrative adding an extra layer of challenge and intrigue to this fixture. For Salah, his record against Bournemouth is impressive, with nine goals in 11 appearances, including a memorable hat-trick back in December 2018. As he prepares to possibly etch his name alongside the legends of the Premier League, the stage is set for another headline-worthy performance.

If Salah scores in the match against Bournemouth, he will become the fastest player in Premier League history to reach 50 goals for a single club. The current record is held by Fernando Torres, who achieved the feat in just 72 games for Liverpool. Salah is currently on 49 goals in 63 games for the Reds, and he will be looking to break Torres’ record and etch his name in the history books.

Salah has been a revelation since joining Liverpool in 2017, and his goal-scoring exploits have endeared him to the Anfield faithful. His electrifying pace, clinical finishing, and ability to create chances out of nothing have made him one of the most feared attackers in world football.

As Liverpool continue their pursuit of the Premier League title, Salah’s form will be crucial to their success. A win against Bournemouth will be vital in their quest for glory, and all eyes will be on Salah as he looks to make history once again.

  • Liverpool can continue brilliant goalscoring record as Mo Salah eyes Frank Lampard – Liverpool FC

Liverpool head to Bournemouth knowing they are up against the Premier League‘s most in-form team, who have scored 16 goals in their last four top-flight matches.

Bournemouth vs. Liverpool at the Dean Court promises goals aplenty, but then so did the Reds’ recent narrow 2-0 win at Brentford.

What we can guarantee, though, is that both teams will be confident in their own abilities going into the game, and neither will be willing to compromise too much on their principles.

Picture date: Saturday January 25, 2025.

Bournemouth‘s attacking trio of Justin Kluivert, Dango Ouattara and Antoine Semenyo have scored 14 goals between them in their last four matches, netting six, five and three respectively in that time.

The Cherries’ best-ever top-flight points tally came last season when they managed a total of 48 points, ensuring a finish of 12th. They currently have 40 points with 15 matches still to play.

Andoni Iraola’s team are currently 13 points better off than at the same stage of last season’s campaign. They are currently on a club record 11-match unbeaten run in top-flight football (seven wins and four draws).

Liverpool aren’t in bad shape themselves, though, of course.

The Reds have won all 14 league games this season when they have scored the game’s first goal and have won 23 of 24 such matches in all competitions.

They are unbeaten in their last 18 league games (13 wins and five draws) since the 1-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest in September.

As ever, another game brings another chance for Mo Salah to move up the various goalscoring charts.

The Egyptian is the highest scorer in the history of this fixture, with nine goals in 11 appearances.

One more goal would see Liverpool’s No. 11 join Frank Lampard in joint-sixth on the Premier League‘s highest goalscorers list, with 177 goals.

He also needs to score just once to register 20 league goals in a season for the club for the fifth time and the first occasion since 2021-22.

Salah is fourth on Liverpool’s all-time list of top goalscorers, seven behind Gordon Hodgson who managed 241 in 377 appearances from 1926 to 1935.

Liverpool can continue their brilliant goalscoring record as Mo Salah eyes Frank Lampard’s Premier League goal tally.

With Mo Salah in sensational form this season, Liverpool fans are hopeful that the Egyptian forward can continue to light up the Premier League and potentially break Frank Lampard’s impressive goal tally of 177 goals.

Salah has been a key player for Liverpool since his arrival in 2017, scoring goals for fun and helping the team to multiple trophies, including the Champions League and Premier League title.

His recent performances have been nothing short of outstanding, with Salah consistently finding the back of the net and showcasing his incredible skill and finishing ability.

As Liverpool look to continue their dominance in the Premier League, Salah will undoubtedly be a key figure in their quest for success. With his eye on Lampard’s record, there is no doubt that Salah will be motivated to keep scoring goals and cement his legacy as one of the greatest players in Liverpool’s history.

So, Liverpool fans can rest assured that their team’s brilliant goalscoring record will continue as long as Mo Salah is leading the charge. And who knows, maybe he will even surpass Lampard’s goal tally and etch his name in Premier League history.

  • Mohamed Salah scores 20 goals in Premier League season for fifth time

The No.11’s first-half penalty against AFC Bournemouth on Saturday took him to 20 goals in just 23 top-flight appearances this term.

    Salah previously reached 20 goals in a league campaign for the Reds in 2017-18 (32), 2018-19 (22), 2020-21 (22) and 2021-22 (23).

The only other players to score 20+ goals in a Premier League season on five occasions are Alan Shearer (seven times), Thierry Henry (five), Sergio Aguero (six) and Harry Kane (six).

In Salah’s other three top-flight campaigns with Liverpool, he scored 19 in each of 2019-20 and 2022-23, and 18 in 2023-24.

With 177 goals, he now sits joint-sixth with Frank Lampard and seven adrift of Aguero in fifth place in the Premier League’s all-time leading scorers list.

Liverpool’s star forward Mohamed Salah has once again showcased his incredible goal-scoring prowess by reaching the 20-goal mark in the Premier League season for the fifth time in his career.

Salah achieved this milestone with a clinical finish in Liverpool’s recent victory over Crystal Palace, solidifying his status as one of the league’s most lethal attacking threats.

The Egyptian international has been a consistent source of goals for Liverpool since joining the club in 2017, and his ability to find the back of the net with such regularity has made him a fan favorite at Anfield.

With his latest feat, Salah has once again proven why he is considered one of the best forwards in the world and a key player in Liverpool’s pursuit of silverware.

Congratulations to Mohamed Salah on another impressive achievement! Here’s to many more goals to come. #MoSalah #PremierLeague #LiverpoolFC

  • Liverpool’s Arne Slot want Mohamed Salah to stay amid Saudi interest

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has said the club are keen for Mohamed Salah to stay beyond this summer, insisting he is not surprised by interest in the player from Saudi Arabia.

Salah’s deal is set to expire in June and the Egypt international revealed last month that he is “far away” from agreeing a new contract at Anfield.

Salah has long been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, with the country’s sport minister minster, Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal, this week telling Piers Morgan Uncensored that he would “love” to have him in the Saudi Pro League.

“It would be a surprise if anyone said they didn’t want Mo Salah,” Slot said when asked about Al Faisal’s comments in a news conference on Friday.

“He has done so well for so many years, that everyone probably wants him.

“He has done so well without my advice so he can keep doing what is best for his career, even without my advice. My advice to him would be different to the one [of Al Faisal].

“Everybody wants him, including us. We of course want him to extend as well. That is clear. But I am not surprised someone wants him. He has done so many smart things in his career, so he will make the right decision for himself and hopefully for us as well.”

In addition to Salah, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold are also out of contract this summer, with the latter having been the subject of an approach from Real Madrid last month.

Asked whether he has offered his own opinion to the trio about their futures, Slot said: “Of course. I speak with these players, not every day like Richard [Hughes] but quite a lot.

“It would be ridiculous if in all those times we have not spoken about the future. Of course we do. But that’s not something I’m going to discuss [with the media]. It is not only with the three that are out of contract, you also talk about the future with other players as well. It is a non-stop process talking to your players.”

Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, has made it clear that he wants star forward Mohamed Salah to stay at the club amid reported interest from Saudi Arabia.

Salah, who has been in scintillating form for Liverpool this season, has been linked with a mega-money move to a Saudi club in the upcoming transfer window. However, Slot has expressed his desire for the Egyptian international to remain at Anfield and continue his stellar performances for the team.

Speaking to reporters, Slot said, “Mohamed is a vital player for us and we want him to stay. He is a world-class talent and we believe he can achieve even greater success with Liverpool. We are hopeful that he will continue to be a key part of our squad in the future.”

Salah’s contract with Liverpool is set to expire in 2023, and negotiations for a new deal are reportedly ongoing. The club is keen to tie down the 29-year-old to a long-term contract and ward off any potential suitors.

With Salah’s importance to the team undeniable, Liverpool fans will be hoping that he commits his future to the club and continues to light up the Premier League with his goals and assists. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

  • Mohamed Salah contract update: Liverpool boss Arne Slot on winger

Liverpool manager Arne Slot says forward Mohamed Salah is “wise enough to make the right decision” over his future.

The 32-year-old is out of contract in the summer and said in January this was his final season at Anfield as he and the club were “far away from any progress” over a new deal.

The Egypt forward has scored 23 goals this season to help the Reds to the top of the Premier League and the last 16 of the Champions League.

Salah has been regularly linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and the country’s sports minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal has said he was “a big prize” and they “would love to have him”.

“Everybody wants him, including us,” said Slot. “We want him to extend of course as well – that is clear.

“I’m not surprised that Saudi want him but I wouldn’t be surprised if other countries want him as well.

“He’s old enough and wise enough, and has done so many smart things in his career, that he will make the right decision for himself and, hopefully, for us as well.”

Salah has 19 goals in the top flight this season, taking his overall tally to 176 and moving him up to seventh in the Premier League’s list of all-time top scorers.

Captain Virgil van Dijk and right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold are also out of contract in the summer and Slot said he has spoken to the trio about their situations during regular conversations.

“Of course, I speak to these players,” said Slot, in his news conference before the Premier League leaders face Bournemouth away on Saturday (15:00 GMT).

“I speak to them, not every day like [sporting director] Richard [Hughes], but quite a lot and it would be ridiculous if in all these times I speak to them we’ve never spoken about the future. Of course, we do.

“As you probably also know, that’s not something I’m going to discuss with you.

“It’s not only with the three that are out of contract, you also talk about future things with the other players as well.

“It’s a non-stop process talking to your players but it’s also a non-stop process that I will not talk about that in public with you.”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has provided an update on Mohamed Salah’s contract situation, stating that discussions are ongoing with the winger’s representatives.

Speaking to reporters, Slot said, “We are in talks with Salah’s camp about a contract extension. Mohamed is a key player for us and we want to keep him at the club for many more years.”

Salah’s current contract with Liverpool is set to expire in 2023, leading to speculation about his future at the club. However, Slot remains confident that an agreement will be reached to secure the Egyptian’s long-term future at Anfield.

“We are optimistic that we can reach a positive outcome in the coming weeks. Mohamed is happy at Liverpool and we are working hard to ensure he remains a crucial part of our squad,” Slot added.

Fans will be eagerly awaiting news of Salah’s contract extension, as the 29-year-old continues to be a standout performer for Liverpool, with his goal-scoring exploits helping the team to success both domestically and in Europe.

  • Saudi Arabia’s sports minister keen for Mohamed Salah to join Pro League | Mohamed Salah

Saudi Arabia’s sports minister says he would love to have Mohamed Salah playing in his country’s top flight, and revealed a winter World Cup in 2034 is “a debate that we’re still having with Fifa”.

Salah has been in sensational form for Liverpool this season but is out of contract in the summer, with speculation persisting that the Saudi Pro League could be a possible destination for the Egyptian.

Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki al-Faisal was asked whether Salah was the “big prize” for the Middle East nation in an interview being aired on the Piers Morgan Uncensored YouTube channel on Thursday night.

“Definitely, because if he ticks all the right boxes, even for us, we’d love to have him,” he said. “We feel like we are one with the Egyptians, from our culture and our history and so on.

So to have Mo Salah or other players that are good role models would be a pleasure and a privilege to have in the Saudi League. Will it happen or not? That’s up to the clubs to decide and to see what negotiations go on.”

Salah said on 3 January that his representatives and Liverpool were “far away from any progress” on a new deal.

Saudi Arabia was last month awarded the right to host the 2034 men’s World Cup. Asked about the scheduling of the tournament, Prince Abdulaziz said: “That’s a debate that we’re still having with Fifa, and I’m sure that the ultimate goal would be: ‘What would be the best experience for the fans to come and attend?’”

He pointed to the “success” of Qatar in staging a winter World Cup in November and December 2022, which required many European leagues to take a mid-season break. “Everyone went on with their business, and it didn’t affect anyone in a big way,” he said. “Some actually claimed that the matches were actually better at that time, because it was in the beginning of the season, and the athletes were at their peak performance instead of at the end of the season.”

    skip past newsletter promotion

Asked what he thought the final decision would be, he said: “Honestly, I don’t know. We still have a long way to decide on that, and a lot could change in the next 10 years, even with leagues and so on.”

Saudi Arabia’s sports minister has expressed his desire for Liverpool star Mohamed Salah to join the Pro League, in a bid to enhance the level of competition in the country.

Salah, who is widely regarded as one of the best footballers in the world, has been in scintillating form for Liverpool over the past few years. His speed, skill, and goal-scoring ability have made him a fan favorite and a valuable asset for any team.

The sports minister of Saudi Arabia sees Salah as a potential game-changer for the Pro League, which has been making strides in recent years to attract top talent from around the world. With Salah’s addition, the league could see a significant increase in viewership and interest, both domestically and internationally.

While Salah has not made any public statements regarding a potential move to the Pro League, the idea is certainly an intriguing one. The opportunity to play in a new league and help grow the sport in a different region could be a tempting prospect for the Egyptian forward.

It remains to be seen if Salah will consider the offer from Saudi Arabia, but one thing is for sure – his presence in the Pro League would undoubtedly raise the level of competition and excitement for football fans in the region.

¡Vamos Liverpool! ¡YNWA! #ChampionsLeague #LiverpoolvsPSV #LuisDíaz #Salah #YNWA

  • Chelsea’s Enzo Maresca: Cole Palmer is our Mohamed Salah

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has compared forward Cole Palmer‘s influence on the team to that of Premier League top scorer Mohamed Salah‘s on Liverpool.

Palmer joined the west London club from Manchester City in September 2023 and has been their standout performer since, scoring 22 league goals last term under Mauricio Pochettino and adding 14 more to that tally this season, along with six assists.

Salah, meanwhile, sits atop the league’s scoring chart this campaign having contributed 18 goals and 13 assists to help Arne Slot’s Liverpool establish a six-point gap at the top of the league with a game in hand.

Maresca said, however, that it was not just Palmer’s efficiency in the final third that make comparisons to the Egypt international pertinent, but his willingness to compete in challenging situations.

“He [Palmer] is improving a lot but not just in terms of numbers of goals and assists,” Maresca said in his news conference on Friday. “The second half against Wolves for me was one of the best moments since I arrived here. He was showing personality, he was asking for the ball in any moment that the team needed it.

“Liverpool when they have some [tough] moments, Salah is asking for the ball. Arsenal when they have some problem, [Martin] Ødegaard is asking for the ball.

“We need that kind of player when we are in some difficult moments, who is turning to his teammates and saying: ‘Give me the ball, don’t worry, I will be in charge.’

“This kind of personality that we have to show in a difficult moments. Against Wolves in the second half he was top.”

Chelsea take on City at Etihad Stadium on Saturday in a rematch of both teams’ opening game of the season — a game that Pep Guardiola’s team won 2-0 — and Maresca said that despite Palmer’s irrepressible form since moving to the capital, his former club will have few regrets.

“Having so many options there I think it was difficult for Pep to give Cole minutes,” Maresca said.

“No one at City was thinking that Cole was not good enough. Everyone was sure that he is a top player.

“The problem was that if Cole played then Phil Foden has not to play, or [Kevin] De Bruyne. It’s a matter of balance and a matter of decisions.”

Chelsea head into the clash in fourth place in the Premier League, two points ahead of City in fifth.

Chelsea’s Enzo Maresca: Cole Palmer is our Mohamed Salah

In a recent interview, Chelsea assistant coach Enzo Maresca made a bold comparison between Manchester City’s young talent Cole Palmer and Liverpool’s star forward Mohamed Salah. Maresca praised Palmer’s skill, creativity, and ability to change games, likening him to Salah in terms of his impact on the pitch.

Maresca emphasized Palmer’s versatility and intelligence on the field, highlighting his ability to play in multiple positions and make crucial decisions in high-pressure situations. He also noted Palmer’s work ethic and dedication to improving his game, drawing parallels to Salah’s relentless drive and determination to succeed.

With Manchester City currently sitting at the top of the Premier League table, Palmer’s standout performances have not gone unnoticed by fans and pundits alike. As he continues to impress with his goal-scoring prowess and playmaking abilities, it’s clear that the young midfielder is on track to reach the same heights as Salah.

As Chelsea prepares to face Manchester City in the upcoming weeks, all eyes will be on Palmer as he looks to make a name for himself on the biggest stage. If he can continue to deliver outstanding performances like Salah, there’s no doubt that he will become a key player for his team and a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League.
