Elon Musk flags massive salaries at NPR as DOGE takes shape
WASHINGTON (TNND) — Elon Musk, who leads the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), responded to a social media user Tuesday who shared reported salaries of people associated with NPR.
“Hmm,” Musk posted on X.
Mike Cernovich, who has 1.3 million X followers, said several NPR hosts earn $500,000 a year, adding that “NPR is a taxpyer-funded [sic], far-left wing media outlet.”
He attached an image of a chart titled “compensation,” with the pay of seven people associated with the nonprofit news organization listed on the chart. Former NPR CEO John Lansing, who died in August, is listed as earning more than $500,000. Host Steve Inskeep is said to be earning at least $490,000.
The image shared by Cernovich matches Fiscal Year 2023 data compiled by investigate journalism nonprofit ProPublica, which analyzed tax filings.
NPR’s website says less than 1% of the company’s annual operating budget is funded through grants from federal agencies and departments, as well as the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a nonprofit authorized by Congress. Musk has vowed to slash government expenses through DOGE.
In November, Musk asked in an X post, “[s]hould your tax dollars really be paying for an organization run by people who think the truth is a ‘distraction’?” His question was in response to a clip of Katherine Maher, who became the CEO of NPR in March, saying in a 2022 conference she thinks “our reverence for the truth might have become a bit of a distraction that is preventing us from finding consensus and getting important things done.”
NPR in April 2023 stopped posting on X, then Twitter, after the platform temporarily gave the company’s account a “state-affiliated media” label. The company said in a statement at the time it did not want to share journalism on platforms which “have demonstrated an interest in undermining our credibility.”
Musk pushed back against criticism for the move by sharing a copy of his platform’s guidelines, which said “state-affiliated media is defined as outlets where the state exercises control over editorial content through financial resources, direct or indirect political pressures, and/or control over production and distribution.”
The label for NPR was switched to “government-funded media” shortly after the “state-affiliated media” designation was given. The company’s account is now labeled by X as “verified.”

Jim Nantz has been with CBS for 40 years while recently reaching a milestone of being the first person within the company to call 500 NFL games, doing so in the Buffalo Bills’ win over the Denver Broncos last week. Nantz signed a new deal in 2021 which is believed to run through the 2025 season, where he reportedly makes as much as $10.5 million per year . Nantz works alongside Tony Romo, who signed a 10-year, $180 million deal a few years ago.
Joe Buck had been with FOX Sports for 18 years before he and Troy Aikman both left for ESPN to continue their partnership, being the longest-tenured duo in announcing after beginning in 2002. He is now the lead playcaller for Monday Night Football on ESPN, after signing a deal with the Disney-owned company in 2022 where he makes somewhere between $12-15 million a year .
Meanwhile, Mike Tirico took over Al Michaels’ role as the lead play-by-play announcer on NBC while being partnered with Cris Collinsworth, with the two holding the primetime slot on Sunday Night Football. Tirico is believed to make $10.5 million a year from his deal, which he signed ahead of the 2022 season.
And Kevin Burkhardt became the lead announcer for FOX after Buck left for ESPN, with him now working alongside Tom Brady in the booth with the two set to call the Super Bowl this year. While Brady makes an incredible $37.5 million a year, Burkhardt is believed to make around $5 million each season. He has been with FOX since 2013, and is believed to be negotiating a new deal ahead of the 2025 season.

These are the salaries of the highest paid coaches in the NFL
What makes a good head coach in the NFL? That’s the (multi) million dollar question which a number of teams are looking to find the answer to. Get a competent one and they can change the fortunes of a franchise. A dud, on the other hand, can mean millions of dollars down the drain.
Just as players have complicated clauses and bonuses written into their contracts, so do coaches. The main difference is that NFL coaches always have guaranteed contracts. If the team is doing well, the contract could be extended. If the team is doing badly, the coach can be dropped at any time. But the team is still on the hook for his money.
Since the coaching staff are not party to the collective bargaining agreement between teams and players, their salary has no bearing on the salary cap. Great news for those franchises with deep pockets, less so for small-market teams.
Is the highest-paid coach the most successful coach?
Every contract is individual to the coach and the organization, so generalizing isn’t easy. Stock options may be included, as could performance bonuses. Not every franchise publishes financial details of the front office or coaching staff, so a few coaches could fall anywhere along the pay spectrum. But the one thing that (we think that) we know is that the highest-paid coach in the NFL at present is also the most successful in the NFL.
Andy Reid, who coached the Philadelphia Eagles before joining the Kansas City Chiefs, previously faced criticism for his poor record in championship games (he lost four during his time in Philly). However, he has since won three of the last five Super Bowls with Patrick Mahomes as his quarterback.
In April this year, Reid secured a reported five-year, $100 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid coach in the NFL and North American sports leagues. The 66-year-old is also the only NFL coach to reach 100 wins with two different franchises and has led his teams to the playoffs 20 times in 26 seasons.
As a result, Reid has taken over top spot on the list from the recently retired Bill Belichick, who led this list in 2023 with a salary of $20 million.
