  • Cruz Vs. Salcido On DAZN This Saturday

Andy Cruz says he’s ready to battle Omar Salcido in their 10-round WBC lightweight title eliminator this Saturday, January 25th, at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Chelsea Ballroom, in Las Vegas.

2020 Olympic gold medalist Cruz (4-0, 2 KOs) is looking to become the mandatory challenger for WBC 135-lb champion Shakur Stevenson with a win over Salcido (20-1, 14 KOs). The Mexican warrior is coming off a ninth-round knockout of Chris Colbert on October 16th last year.

Cruz vs. Salcido is the co-feature for the Diego Pacheco vs. Steve Nelson fight, which will be live on DAZN. This is Cruz’s opportunity to win over new fans who have not seen him fight. The two-year pro, Cruz, hasn’t been around long enough to be seen by fans, so he’s got to make the most of every opportunity to be in the spotlight.

    Title Shot

“Andy Cruz was a great amateur fighter and had a great amateur career, but we’ve been working very hard throughout these months with Jose Benavidez. Our plan is to go on and get this victory,” said Omar Salcido during today’s final press conference, talking about his fight this Saturday night against Andy Cruz in a WBC lightweight title eliminator.

“Andy, it feels like the biggest step up for you so far. It was fairly comfortable last time out in that huge show in Los Angeles now,” said Eddie Hearn to Cruz. “You’re just a couple of fights away from a world championship. It’s a real test for you on Saturday.”

“I’m excited for my fight on Saturday. I’m not a big talker. Everyone is a big swimmer when they’re not in the water,” said Cruz.

“I know you have world championship ambitions for 2025. People are talking about you wanting to make you son, Keyshawn, proud on Saturday if he attends,” said Hearn to Cruz about wanting to make Keyshawn Davis proud. “I know you’re firmly fixed on this man with a true test, Cuba against Mexico on Saturday.”

Cruz has totally focused on his job against Salcido, and he’s not thinking about Keyshawn, who has already said in many interviews that he doesn’t want to fight him. Although Davis says he doesn’t wish to fight Cruz again because he hasn’t proven himself at the pro level, it’s more about not wanting to get beat again.

“Of course, this is a step up in my career as I’m advancing. My full focus is on my opponent this Saturday, a Mexican warrior who is well prepared for this,” said Cruz. “As I’ve said, it’s not just about saying; it’s about doing, and I’ll do what I need to do on Saturday in the ring.

“I would hope they would because we got some unfinished business there,” said trainer Brian ‘Bomac’ McIntyre to Boxing Social about his fighter, Keyshawn Davis, having “unfinished business” with Cuban Andy Cruz after losing to him four times in the amateurs, including in the 2020 Olympic gold medal match. “So, we just got to go take care of that business.”

BoMac obviously isn’t in too big of a hurry to let his fighter Keyshawn mix it with Cruz again because all the work he’s done in the gym could go up in smoke. Cruz has proven again and again that he’s too good for Keyshawn, beating him four times in a row.

It won’t be any different in the pros, and there’s a lot more for the Norfolk, Virginia native to lose at this level than he was in the amateurs. That’s why Top Rank won’t let Davis anywhere near Cruz and have him spoil things.

  • Tonight’s Live Boxing Results: Cruz Vs. Salcido & Pacheco Vs. Nelson

Super middleweight Diego Pacheco faces Steven Nelson in the main event and 2020 Olympic gold medalist lightweight Andy Cruz takes on Omar Salcido in the co-main tonight from The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. The main card will be shown live on DAZN, beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT.

    Undercard Results

Ernesto Mercado (17-0, 16 KOs) destroyed former two-division world champion Jose Pedraza (29-7-1, 14 KOs) by a fourth round in light welterweight action. Mercado landed a textbook right-hand rabbit punch to the back of Pedraza’s head, sending him down in the fourth round. The fight was halted by referee Robert Hoyle after Pedraza got back up.

He was too hurt to be allowed to continue. Even without the illegal rabbit punch, Mercado was going to knock out Pedraza sooner or later because he had way too much size, power, and youth for the former champion. Pedraza looked like a super featherweight going up against a small welterweight. Size-wise, this fight should have never been made. Mercado was much too big for Pedraza.

After the contest, Mercado called out WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson, who was sitting ringside, smiling. That would be a size mismatch too. Mercado should be fighting Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis at welterweight, but he obviously won’t. That would be more fair.

“It felt great being out there in Las Vegas with all the haters being in there,” said Mercado after the fight. “I was trying to stay calm, and when I saw the perfect shot, I landed. He was scared to get caught. I wanted him to get comfortable, and when I saw the opening, I landed.

    – Light welterweight prospect Leonardo Rubalcava (9-0-1, 3 KOs) and Israel Mercado (11-1-2, 7 KOs) fought to an eight-round majority draw. The scores were 76-74 for Mercado, 75-75 and 75-75. Boxing News 24 scored it for Mercado.

Rubalcava dropped Mercado in the first round. Mercado then came on to dominate the second half of the fight with his pressure and high output. However, in the seventh round, the referee deducted a point from Mercado for a low blow. Mercado out-landed Rubalcava 202 to 98.

    – Junior middleweight prospect Nishant Dev (1-0, 1 KO) won his pro debut with a first-round knockout win over Alton Wiggins (1-1-1). A native of Indis, Dev, 24, dropped Wiggins twice in the round.

The referee, Robert Hoyle, stopped the fight after Wiggins was bumped to the canvas. Wiggins looked shaky after he got back to his feet, resulting in the fight being halted. The time of the stoppage was at 2:48 of the first. The southpaw Dev looked powerful, landing left hands throughout the fight.

“I was dreaming about this moment,” said Dev after the fight. “I dedicate this fight to India. The road to the world championship now begins. I think I was excited for my pro debut. I’m ready for my next fight. I was three months locked down for my training. I was in shape for my first pro fight.

“Right now, my journey begins, and I’m ready for this. No one is a world champion from India. I want to be the first world champion from India.”

“India now has a fighter that can become a world champion,” said Eddie Hearn. “Nishant can go all the way to become a world champion. We’ve got to keep him nice and active. This is someone that can become a world champion. This is our first India fighter, and someone that can become a world champion.”

    – Lightweight prospect Harley Mederos (8-0, 7 KOs) destroyed Arturo de Isla (5-3-1, 4 KOs) by a third-round knockout. Mederos, 24, nailed de Isla with a right hand followed by a booming short left hook to drop him in round three. The referee, Raul Caiz Jr., then waved it off. The time of the stoppage was at 1:27.

    – Super featherweight prospect Zaquin Moses (2-0, 1 KOs) scored a first-round injury stoppage of previously unbeaten Mario Garcia (3-1, 3 KOs) in a four-round scheduled fight. Garcia suffered a bicep injury and couldn’t come out for the second round. Referee Robert Hoyle waved it off officially at 3:00 of round one.

The fight many boxing fans are talking about is Andy Cruz (4-0, 2 KOs) vs. Omar Salcido (20-1, 14 KOs) in this card. They’ll be fighting in a 10-round WBC 135-lb title eliminator. The winner will be the mandatory for WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson. Cruz is expected to dominate tonight and school the slugger Salcido. You can bet that Shakur will be watching closely, knowing that Cruz will likely face him in 2026.

Many believe that Cruz will be the #1 fighter in the lightweight division and defeat Shakur next year. From there, he’ll defeat Gervonta Davis and then Keyshawn Davis. It may take Turki Al-Sheikh to persuade both Tank and Keyshawn to fight Cruz, as he could scare them away once he defeats Shakur.
