  • Spokane’s Sydney Sweeney makes cameo in Super Bowl ad re-creating iconic ‘When Harry Met Sally’ scene with Meg Ryan, Billy Crystal

Viewers tuning into the Super Bowl (on Fox, Tubi and NFL+) may see some familiar faces in an advertisement for mayonnaise.

Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal reconvened 36 years later to re-create the iconic diner scene from “When Harry Met Sally” (where Ryan loudly acts out a particular R-rated deed to make a point).

In the 60-second spot, the rom-com queen, now 63, and comedian, 76, returned to Manhattan’s Katz’s Deli to dine on sandwiches.

But it’s not just these two successful actors you may recognize in the Hellman’s ad. Spokane’s Sydney Sweeney makes a cameo, too.

After Ryan puts Hellmann’s mayonnaise on her sandwich, she begins to make noises of pleasure.

Sweeney (of “Immaculate,” “Euphoria” “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood,” “Madame Web” and “Anyone But You” fame) then utters the line made famous by director Rob Reiner’s mother Estelle in the 1989 film: “I’ll have what she’s having.”

The line is ranked No. 33 on the American Film Institute’s list of the Top 100 movie quotes.

“Now that is a sandwich,” Ryan says.

Sweeney grew up in Spokane, attending Saint George’s School.

Crystal told People on Wednesday that the on-set reunion with Ryan “felt the same” as it did three decades earlier.

“It’s the first time that we’ve been offered something like that,” the six-time Emmy winner told People.

As for working with Sweeney? Both actors agreed the 27-year-old did the line justice.

“She’s adorable,” Crystal told People. “That’s a big deal. It’s an iconic line and it’s a big honor to get to do that. And a heavy burden.”

“It was game and fun and loose and ballsy and just seemed to be having a blast while she was there,” Ryan said. “She’s a completely adorable person.”

Spokane’s Sydney Sweeney makes cameo in Super Bowl ad re-creating iconic ‘When Harry Met Sally’ scene with Meg Ryan, Billy Crystal

Spokane native and rising Hollywood star Sydney Sweeney stole the spotlight during this year’s Super Bowl with a memorable cameo in a commercial that paid homage to the classic romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally.”

In the ad, Sweeney re-created the iconic deli scene from the movie, where Meg Ryan famously fakes an orgasm in front of Billy Crystal. Sweeney’s performance was pitch-perfect, capturing the essence of Ryan’s original performance while adding her own modern twist.

Fans were thrilled to see Sweeney sharing the screen with two legends of the silver screen, and many took to social media to praise her acting chops and undeniable chemistry with Crystal.

Sweeney, who got her start in the industry at a young age, has been making waves in Hollywood with roles in hit shows like “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus.” Her star is on the rise, and this Super Bowl cameo is just the latest example of her talent and versatility.

Spokane is proud to call Sydney Sweeney one of its own, and we can’t wait to see what she does next on the big screen. Keep shining, Sydney!

  • Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan Recreate ‘When Harry Met Sally’ Fake Orgasm Scene for Hellmann’s Super Bowl Ad With Sydney Sweeney

One of the things about Sally Albright that drives Harry Burns crazy in the 1989 movie “When Harry Met Sally” is her picky food sensibilities. It takes her an hour and a half to make a sandwich, he tells her. In the sequel, she only has 30 seconds.

The characters, famously played by Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, return to New York’s Katz’ Delicatessen for a reprise of one of the movie’s best-known scenes in which Sally pretends to have an orgasm while the pair dines. Now, they will also promote Hellmann’s mayonnaise in the Super Bowl.

    More from Variety

With the movie recently reaching its 35th anniversary and being accepted into the National Film Registry, “it just felt like the perfect storm for us to get back together at the same table and have indigestion,” says Crystal, during a recent interview.

Hellmann’s, which is owned by the consumer-products giant Unilever, is showing its ambition for the Super Bowl commercial, the brand’s fifth. In recent years, the popular condiment has focused on the issue of food waste, telling Big Game viewers that the mayonnaise can help them use more of the supermarket staples that they buy. Last year’s Super Bowl ad tapped Kate McKinnon, Pete Davidson and a “Mayo Cat.”

In contemplating another Super Bowl ad salvo, executives wanted to shake up the mission, says Jessica Grigoriou, senior vice president of marketing for condiments at Unilever, and show how the mayonnaise helped make for superior eating. “We want to continue to up the bar every year and continue to surprise people too and do something a little bit more unexpected.” she says. The ad taps humor and nostalgia, she adds, two themes that regularly prove popular at the Super Bowl. The new 30-second ad is slated to run in the second quarter during Fox’s telecast of the event on February 9.

Reviving a classic piece of content, however, is never easy. Indeed, past Super Bowl advertisers have resurrected popular film and TV characters, but usually not in the scenes that made them so memorable. General Motors in 2022 reconvened the cast of the 1997 hit “Austin Powers” in a new tale that has the popular character Dr. Evil, played by Mike Myers, trying to take over the auto giant in a new bid to control the world. Characters from HBO’s “The Sopranos” were resurrected that year for a spot from Chevrolet. In 2019, Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Stella Artois ran a Super Bowl spot featuring Jeff Bridges as “The Dude” from “The Big Lebowski” sitting near Sarah Jessica Parker playing Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex and the City.”

Others have tried similar feats in other venues. Comcast in 2019 created a sequel of sorts to the beloved 1982 movie “E.T.” with the alien and actor Henry Thomas turning up for a longform commercial during NBC’s broadcast of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The company consulted with director Steve Spielberg to make sure it stayed true to the conceit.

Neither Ryan or Crystal had qualms about picking up where they left off (indeed, the table they sit at in the commercial is the same one used so many years ago in the film). “ I had never been back, ever,” says Ryan. “It looks precisely, exactly the same.” The rapport the actors still share, says Crystal, will make viewers feel as if the characters “have been coming there for 35 years every Saturday or Sunday and this is their thing.”

The commercial may have been more challenging than the movie, suggests Ryan, who did ads for Burger King and deodorant in a different era. “I always felt like movies were easier, frankly, with less attention to detail, you know?” she says. “There is a lot that 30 seconds or 45 seconds or 60 seconds have to communicate. It’s a different animal.”

Hellman’s isn’t leaving anything to chance. Fans can order the turkey and pastrami sandwiches they see in the new Super Bowl spot, says Grigoriou, with special instructions included to make the meal to Sally’s specifications (which require Hellmann’s to make things complete). Customers can even schedule the delivery for the Friday before the Super Bowl.

Even though the ad nods to an old film, it still has a new surprise. Sydney Sweeney makes a cameo to offer the oft-remembered line, “I’ll have what she’s having.”

The recreation of this specific scene shows just how much consumer culture has changed in the decades since the movie was on screens. In 1989, depicting an orgasm in public was viewed as tripping the lines of decency. At the time, “you hadn’t heard the word ‘orgasm’ in a film unless it was a Ron Jeremy movie,” says Crystal. Now, “there’s far worse on TV.” Oh, Harry.

Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, the iconic duo from the beloved romantic comedy ‘When Harry Met Sally,’ have reunited to recreate one of the film’s most memorable scenes for a Hellmann’s Super Bowl ad. In the ad, Crystal and Ryan are joined by rising star Sydney Sweeney as they comically reenact the fake orgasm scene that made waves back in 1989.

The ad begins with Crystal and Ryan sitting in a diner, just like in the original film, as they order sandwiches with Hellmann’s mayo. As they take a bite of their sandwiches, Sweeney, playing a waitress, approaches their table and asks if everything is okay. This prompts Crystal to deliver his famous line, “I’ll have what she’s having,” before Ryan hilariously launches into her fake orgasm performance.

The scene is a perfect blend of nostalgia and humor, with Crystal and Ryan effortlessly recapturing the magic of their on-screen chemistry. Sweeney’s inclusion adds a fresh twist to the classic scene, making it a fun and entertaining watch for viewers of all ages.

As the ad comes to a close, the trio breaks character and shares a laugh, showcasing the camaraderie and fun they had while filming. The commercial ends with the Hellmann’s logo and a tagline that reads, “Bringing people together one sandwich at a time.”

Overall, this Super Bowl ad is a delightful homage to a beloved film and a creative way to promote Hellmann’s products. With Crystal, Ryan, and Sweeney at the helm, it’s sure to be a hit with audiences everywhere.

  • Billy Crystal & Meg Ryan Recreate “When Harry Met Sally” Deli Scene For Super Bowl Ad

Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan have returned to the scene of the orgasm, recreating the indelible deli scene from When Harry Met Sally for a Super Bowl ad for mayonnaise.

The spot for Hellmann’s (watch the 60-second version above) was filmed at Katz’s Delicatessen in New York, the same venue where the 1989 romcom scene took place. The close replica of the original scene only adds the variation that the addition of the right brand of mayo is what prompts an orgasmic response from Sally. Nodding to the original scene’s button, the line “I’ll have what she’s having,” the ad has Sydney Sweeney deliver it in place of Estelle Reiner in the original movie.

The ad will be part of a record-setting lineup for Fox’s telecast of the February 9 game. Earlier Wednesday, sources told Deadline the network has fetched more than $8 million for at least 10 of the 30-second spots during the game, a new high. Fox broke the $7 million mark in 2023, its last time broadcasting the Super Bowl.

Jake Szymanski directed the ad, which starts with Harry observing, “I can’t believe they let us back in this place.” When Sally asks him why, he responds, “Hello…,” alluding to the pounding-the-table scene in the film. “Nobody remembers that,” Sally shrugs.

Dissatisfied with her sandwich, Sally adds a squirt or two of Hellmann’s and suddenly rediscovers the carnal pleasures of a good deli experience. Crystal is in his element once Ryan begins moaning with delight. “Here we go,” he mutters. As more and more nearby diners and onlookers stare, he delivers a beleaguered smile, telling them, “Lunch and a show, huh? How about that?!”

In a nostalgic and heartwarming Super Bowl ad, Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan reunite to recreate the iconic deli scene from their beloved romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally.”

The ad begins with Crystal and Ryan sitting in a crowded deli, just like in the original movie. As they banter back and forth about whether men and women can truly be friends without any romantic feelings getting in the way, the camera captures the same chemistry and humor that made their on-screen relationship so memorable.

As they reach the climax of the scene, with Ryan faking a loud and exaggerated orgasm to prove her point, the ad cuts to a shot of Crystal looking amused and slightly embarrassed. The ad ends with the tagline, “Some things never change, even after 30 years. Happy Super Bowl Sunday from When Harry Met Sally.”

Fans of the classic film are sure to be delighted by this charming and clever ad, which pays tribute to a timeless love story and the enduring talent of its stars.

  • Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal reveal why they finally revisited ‘When Harry Met Sally’ after 35 years

    CNN
     —

It’s a reunion 35 years in the making, thanks to mayonnaise.

More than three decades after the romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally” first hit theaters, Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are finally back together.

Coinciding with the 35th anniversary of their beloved movie, Crystal and Ryan returned to the famed Katz’s Deli in New York City to recreate one of the film’s most famous scenes, where the floors were still greasy, the commotion was still loud, and, well, the orgasms were still very fake.

Seated together at the exact same table where they originally filmed that infamous 1989 meal, Crystal and Ryan have recreated the iconic moment from rom-com cinema for a Hellmann’s mayonnaise commercial that will air during next month’s Super Bowl.

Speaking to CNN, the duo revealed that they never thought they’d have a “When Harry Met Sally” reunion. But then the perfect project came along.

In the commercial, titled “When Sally Met Hellmann’s,” Ryan, in character as Sally, is overcome with excitement, to say the least, when she takes a bite of her turkey sandwich with Hellmann’s mayonnaise.

Ryan said she is excited for fans to learn that Harry and Sally are still together all these years later.

“I don’t know that they intended it, but what we like about it is that you’re inside a little bit of their happily after ever,” Ryan told CNN. “Thirty-five years later, you get the idea that they’re still going here, they’re together, they’re still talking the way they talk to each other. It’s like a little wink at the movie.”

Crystal said that it felt like no time had passed at all.

“Is the right word comfortable? I don’t know, it just makes sense! That’s always been something, is that you can’t really define it,” Crystal said. “I knew it the first time that we met when Meg came in. I was already cast in the movie and when Meg came in to talk and then to read, we just said, ‘Let’s start shooting.’ It just felt right and great right away. And it did on this day, too.”

Crystal continued, “When we walked onto the set together, it was just like, ‘Here we are.’ Same table, same pastrami sandwich, same indigestion. And you know, it felt kind of great.”

The duo still marvel at the enduring love for “When Harry Met Sally.”

“I think about the legacy of that scene or that movie,” Ryan said. “Talking about it today, I’m so grateful that I was around all of these really kind and very high-level comedic minds,” she said, reminiscing on working on the film with Crystal and castmates Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby, as well as director Rob Reiner, writer Nora Ephron and cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld.

“Understanding men and women, the basic principle was, ‘Can they be friends?’ You know, that’s delicate stuff – this was in the late ’80s. It was really high wire,” Crystal said. “You have no idea what’s going to happen with any project. We left with a great experience. We still have that in our hearts, and we’ll always have that. And the fact that this movie has endured and is so respected and revered and studied, that is incredibly moving and satisfying.”

Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal in a scene from

Recalling the original deli scene, Crystal said that Ephron came up with the initial idea to discuss a woman faking an orgasm on-screen. But the two stars had creative input. Ryan told CNN that she is the one who voiced, ‘I should do it,’ and then Crystal took it up a notch, offering the idea to film the scene in a public setting, like a restaurant.

In the Super Bowl ad, the punchline – “I’ll have what she’s having” – is recreated by a modern-day rom-com star: actress Sydney Sweeney.

Ryan praised Sweeney as “ballsy, funny, game, silly and smart,” and said that she came to set with social media ideas to support the project.

“That’s maybe an intimidating environment to walk into,” Ryan added. “But she was just fantastic.”

Crystal, who praised Sweeney’s “extraordinary work” in HBO’s “Euphoria,” said that “bearing the burden of having to deliver that line” comes with pressure, but Sweeney “delivered it and she was really good.”

“She was just great,” Crystal said. “I think it will be a delicious little surprise at the end.”

Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal recently sat down for an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly to discuss their decision to revisit the iconic romantic comedy film, ‘When Harry Met Sally,’ after 35 years.

During the interview, Ryan and Crystal shared that they had been approached numerous times over the years about the possibility of a sequel or a remake of the beloved film. However, both actors were hesitant to revisit the story that had become so beloved and iconic in the hearts of fans.

Ryan explained, “We always felt like ‘When Harry Met Sally’ was a perfect standalone film. It captured a moment in time and a specific type of relationship that felt complete in its own right. We didn’t want to tarnish that by trying to recreate the magic.”

Crystal added, “But as time went on, we started to realize that there was still more to explore with these characters. We wanted to show where Harry and Sally are now, 35 years later, and how their relationship has evolved over the years.”

Ultimately, Ryan and Crystal decided to revisit ‘When Harry Met Sally’ as a limited series, which will explore the lives of the characters in present-day New York City. The actors revealed that they were excited to work on the project together again and to bring Harry and Sally back to life for a whole new generation of fans.

Fans of the original film can look forward to seeing Ryan and Crystal reprise their iconic roles in the upcoming limited series, which is set to premiere on a major streaming platform later this year.

  • Hellmann’s Takes Harry and Sally Back to Katz’s Deli for Super Bowl Ad

Hellmann’s wanted to do something bigger and bolder to celebrate its fifth consecutive year running a Super Bowl ad.

So, the mayonnaise brand is tapping into the nostalgia around the 1989 film When Harry Met Sally.

Hellmann’s 30-second Super Bowl ad recreates the iconic diner scene at New York’s Katz’s Deli from When Harry Met Sally, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal reprise their roles as Harry and Sally. The ad was created by WPP-owned VML.

The ad zeroes in on mayonnaise as a key ingredient for game-day dishes, Jessica Grigoriou, svp of condiment marketing for Unilever North America, told ADWEEK.

“It’s such a great moment for us to be part of football culture, and we wanted to take that opportunity to highlight how our Hellmann’s mayonnaise brings out the best in your game-day dishes while doing so in just an amazing, entertaining way,” Grigoriou said.

In the ad, Ryan is shown eating her sandwich when she realizes that something is missing. Crystal asks her, “What, no good?” She then adds Hellmann’s mayo and begins making noises, creating a commotion. The camera then pans to actress Sydney Sweeney who says, “I’ll have what she’s having” to a waitress.

“This scene resonates with everybody—and we were able to do so in a way that stayed very authentic to what the original scene is about, but put Hellmann’s at the center of that,” Grigoriou said.

Sweeney starred in 2023’s Anyone But You—the equivalent of When Harry Met Sally that was popular with Gen Z and millennials. In the original scene, an older woman says, “I’ll have what she’s having.” Hellmann’s wanted to reverse this by having a younger person deliver the line.

“We knew that she would also just help us connect to that generation that has seen this or heard of the film and not seen it,” said Grigoriou.

  • Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal Recreate ‘When Harry Met Sally’ Fake Orgasm Scene for Hellmann’s 2025 Super Bowl Commercial (Exclusive)

Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal are back at Katz’s Deli — and we’ll have what they’re having.

More than 35 years after When Harry Met Sally introduced one of the most-quoted scenes in rom-com history, Ryan and Crystal reunited in a Super Bowl commercial for Hellmann’s.

The ad sees the pair reviving the 1989 movie’s title characters at the New York City deli, where Harry tells Sally, “I can’t believe they let us back in this place.”

“Why?” Sally asks, to which he responds, “Hello …”

    “Nobody remembers that,” Sally insists.

They’re, of course, referring to the classic movie moment where Harry says he doesn’t believe any of the women he’s slept with have ever faked an orgasm and Sally proceeds to offer a convincing demonstration right in the middle of the restaurant. “I’ll have what she’s having,” deadpans a fellow diner. (Trivia alert: It’s actually the director Rob Reiner’s mother, Estelle, who delivers the now-famous line.)

The ad then shows the duo bite into their respective sandwiches, but Sally admits hers “isn’t doing it.”

The solution? Sally squeezes a healthy serving of Hellmann’s mayonnaise onto her rye bread, and signals her approval by re-enacting her famous performance with gusto. “This one’s real,” Billy remarks. Actress Sydney Sweeney makes a cameo to deliver the “I’ll have what she’s having” catchphrase.

Crystal tells PEOPLE the timing was right to revisit the beloved movie, written by the late Nora Ephron.

“It was our 35th anniversary of the film, and it’s the first time that we’ve been offered something like that,” he says. “It was a really fun idea, and the approach was right.”

“They were so respectful of the movie and of the scene too,” Ryan tells PEOPLE of Hellmann’s. “They came to us with just an enormous amount of respect for that, for the source material and for the characters.”

And as for sitting across the table from each other at the famed N.Y.C. deli once again, Crystal says, “It felt the same.”

Ryan remembers the shoot for the original Katz’s scene lasting “all day,” during which she experienced “a lot of trepidation and nerves.”

“Initially, it was like, ‘Oh, what are these sounds going to be?’ All the levels. I don’t know if I’m going to get help,” she recalls.

Fortunately, Reiner offered her plenty of guidance. “Rob had so many significant and interesting sounds to inspire me with,” Ryan says.

Crystal recalls: “He did one and he took me aside and he said, ‘Oh, I shouldn’t have done that. I just had an orgasm in front of my mother.”

    Sydney Sweeney makes a cameo.

    Hellmann’s

Both actors agreed Sweeney did the line justice in the commercial.

“She’s adorable,” Crystal says of the Anyone But You star. “That’s a big deal. It’s an iconic line and it’s a big honor to get to do that. And a heavy burden.”

“It was game and fun and loose and ballsy and just seemed to be having a blast while she was there,” Ryan adds. “She’s a completely adorable person.”

The pair also reflected on why the Katz’s scene has continued to resonate in pop culture for more than three decades.

“Back then, no one had ever attempted to talk about that,” Crystal says, noting it evolved from a script meeting, during which the “concept of women faking orgasms” came up. “I think it just took everyone’s breath away.”

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE’s free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Ryan says it’s “really just a well-constructed scene.”

“It pays off the way both Sally’s funny is behavioral, Harry’s funny is more verbal and reactive,” she explains. “That was important, how Billy reacted to her. So it just sort of pulled all together in one scene, everything about the characters and sort of delivered on the promise of the premise.”

“And she teaches him a lesson at the same time,” Crystal adds. “And doesn’t care where she is, doesn’t care that people are watching.”

A teaser for the Hellmann’s commercial, released last week, paid tribute to Sally’s notoriously detailed ordering style when eating out.

“I didn’t know that you could order like that until I played Sally,” Ryan says. “I didn’t realize that you could be that specific. When I was in New York, I never did that. … In L.A., there was more sort of acceptance of tailoring your order. Now, of course, everyone does it.”

“That was a real Nora thing though,” Crystal notes of Ephron.

“She made it more permissible,” Ryan adds.

In a surprising and nostalgic twist, Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal have teamed up once again to recreate their iconic fake orgasm scene from the classic rom-com “When Harry Met Sally” for Hellmann’s 2025 Super Bowl commercial.

The commercial, which will air during the highly anticipated sporting event, pays homage to the beloved film and its memorable moments. Ryan and Crystal, who starred as Sally Albright and Harry Burns, respectively, in the 1989 movie, bring their timeless chemistry and comedic timing to the screen once more.

In the commercial, Ryan and Crystal are seen sitting in a bustling diner, just like in the original scene. As they dig into a delicious sandwich made with Hellmann’s mayonnaise, Ryan suddenly breaks into the infamous fake orgasm, much to Crystal’s amusement.

The duo’s performance is as hilarious and charming as ever, reminding viewers why “When Harry Met Sally” remains a timeless classic. The commercial is sure to be a hit with fans of the film and foodies alike.

Don’t miss Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal’s unforgettable reunion in the Hellmann’s 2025 Super Bowl commercial, airing during the big game. Get ready to laugh, reminisce, and maybe even crave a sandwich with Hellmann’s mayonnaise.

Sally Struthers has revealed she did not find a pal or confidante in Betty White

The All in the Family actress says the late Golden Girls star once “fat-shamed” her in front of a group of their peers after she reached out to grab a cookie sitting on a plate in front of her at White’s house.

“I have to say, now that she’s gone, I wanna talk about Betty White for just a moment,” Struthers said on a recent episode of the Let’s Talk About That! The 77-year-old A Man on the Inside actress went on to describe White as a “very passive-aggressive woman,” explaining the incident that left a bad taste in her mouth occurred when the pair were working together on the pilot for a new game show in White’s Los Angeles home.

“She asked her housekeeper to bring in a plate of whatever to us while we were all sitting and talking about what was working about the game show and what wasn’t working. A plate was set in the middle and it was cookies, I think,” Struthers recalled. “So I reach for a cookie and she said in front of everyone, ‘Oh, I wouldn’t do that if I were you, dear. You don’t need a cookie.’ Totally fat-shamed me in front of the rest of the people in the room, and I thought, ‘Gosh, that’s not nice.’”

White, a five-time Emmy winner, died at 99 in 2021, less than a month before her 100th birthday. A beloved entertainer, she not only showed off her comedic chops on series like The Mary Tyler Moore Show, but also highlighted her sense of humor on the game shows Match Game and Pyramid throughout the 1970s, ’80s, and beyond.

However, White is best recognized for her portrayal of everyone’s favorite elderly sweetheart Rose Nylund on Golden Girls, which ran for seven seasons, from 1985 until 1992. She later reprised her role in its single-season sequel, The Golden Palace

On the podcast, Struthers explained that she had a personal connection to the series — which also starred Bea Arthur, Estelle Getty, and Rue McClanahan — because she lived near the house used for the facade of the Golden Girls home.

“My house was on a street called Saltair, and four houses up the street from me was the house that was filmed as the exterior for Golden Girls,” she said. “I lived four houses down from the Golden Girls house!”

In a shocking revelation, actress Sally Struthers has come forward with claims that her former co-star Betty White “fat-shamed” her over cookies on the set of their hit TV show.

Struthers, best known for her role as Gloria Stivic on “All in the Family,” alleges that White made hurtful comments about her weight while they were filming together. The incident reportedly occurred during a scene where cookies were being passed around on set.

According to Struthers, White made a snide remark about her eating habits, implying that she should not be indulging in sweets due to her size. The incident left Struthers feeling embarrassed and self-conscious about her body.

Fans were shocked to hear about the alleged altercation between the two beloved actresses, as they had always appeared to have a friendly and supportive relationship on screen. Many have taken to social media to express their disappointment in White’s behavior.

Neither White nor her representatives have commented on Struthers’ claims at this time. However, the incident has sparked a larger conversation about body shaming and the importance of treating others with kindness and respect, regardless of their size.

As the story continues to unfold, fans are left wondering how this rift between two iconic actresses will affect their legacy in Hollywood. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Sally Struthers Blasts Norman Lear, Tried to Leave ‘All in the Family’

    • Sally Struthers, who played Gloria on All in the Family, opened up about her unpleasant memories of creator Norman Lear
    • Struthers said that Lear never invited her over for dinner and that he told her he only cast her because she had “blue eyes and a fat face”
    • The actress also said she spent $40,000 in legal fees trying to leave All in the Family after the fifth season, but lost and returned for three more seasons

Sally Struthers is getting honest about her time on the series All in the Family and showrunner Norman Lear. On the Jan. 13 episode of Let’s Talk About That! With Larry Saperstein and Jacob Bellotti, the actress, 77, opened up about working with the acclaimed producer, who died in 2023 at age 101

Struthers told the podcast hosts that she felt comfortable opening up about him now because “he’s gone.” She noted, “I wasn’t a huge fan of his.”

“All those years on the show, Norman and his wife would have dinner parties,” she said. They would invite the other stars of the show — Carroll O’Connor, Jean Stapleton and Rob Reiner — and their spouses often. Struthers revealed, “I wasn’t, in eight years, invited to his home. It didn’t feel good.”

Struthers also shared an upsetting exchange she said she had with Lear during the show’s first season, when the series was first finding success. “He was on the sound stage watching us rehearse, and we were on a break,” she said.

“I said, ‘I can’t believe that we’re doing this and we’re about to hit number one on the air,’ ” she remembered. After noting how he “saw so many young ladies” for her role of Gloria — including Reiner’s then-wife Penny Marshall — she asked Lear, “Was I really the funniest one? And he said, ‘No.’ ”

Lear said that when they were casting the show, they thought it made more sense to have Gloria be a daddy’s girl because O’Connor’s Archie Bunker “was a lot to swallow for American audiences with his bigotry and his social sluts.” They could “soften him up” if he had a “soft spot in his heart for his daughter.”

She remembered that Lear told her, “So we hired you because just like Carroll O’Connor, you have blue eyes and a fat face.” Struthers said she didn’t know how to respond to that and walked away.

Later in the episode, Struthers said that even though she won two Emmys for the series, she was “fourth banana” on the show after the other three leads. She said the show’s “older, brilliant Jewish faith writers” knew how to write for the other characters, but not for “a young lady.”

“I usually had about three lines per show that said, ‘I’ll help you set the table, Ma,’ ‘Michael, where are you going?’ and ‘Oh, Daddy, stop it.’ And then the next week I’d have the three same lines in a different order. And if they literally didn’t know what to do with me in a scene, they’d have me go upstairs to take a bath or wash my hair. It was very frustrating.”

After five seasons, she took her contract to arbitration in hopes of leaving the show, she shared. She hired a lawyer, but after spending $40,000 on legal fees during arbitration, she lost. “I went back and had three more seasons, but they were by far the most fun for me. Because finally, they had Mike and Gloria have a baby, they had us move next door into the house that [the] Jeffersons lived in,” she said.

All in the Family ran from 1971 to 1979 and Struthers appeared in 182 episodes. She also appeared in the spinoff Archie Bunker’s Place and her own short-lived spinoff Gloria. She also found TV fans once again decades later for her role as Babette on Gilmore Girls.

Despite her mixed feelings about the series, Struthers said that part of her longevity as an actress is because she was “lucky enough to be on a groundbreaking national television series.” She reunited with Reiner in early 2024 for a tribute to Lear and the series at the delayed 2023 Emmy Awards.

Struthers still does a lot of theater in addition to her TV work in shows like A Man on the Inside, and she said audiences are still “curious” to come see her in person at 77.

She joked, “Maybe because they love you or like you, but just as much because ‘Wait a minute, is she still alive? Let’s go see what she looks like now.’ ”

Sally Struthers, who played Gloria Stivic on the hit sitcom “All in the Family,” recently made headlines for blasting the show’s creator, Norman Lear. In a candid interview, Struthers revealed that she had tried to leave the show multiple times during its run.

Struthers claimed that Lear was difficult to work with and often clashed with the cast members. She also expressed frustration with the direction of her character, Gloria, and felt that her talents were being underutilized.

Despite her efforts to leave the show, Struthers ultimately stayed on until the series ended in 1979. However, her comments have sparked a debate among fans of the show, with some siding with Lear and others supporting Struthers’ decision to speak out.

As the controversy continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how Lear will respond to Struthers’ accusations. In the meantime, fans of “All in the Family” are left wondering what could have been if Gloria had indeed left the show.
